Obama: McCain Trying to Make Voters ‘Scared’ of Me

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: While campaigning in a traditionally Republican district, Sen. Barack Obama attempted to beat back rumors about him– telling the Springfield, Missouri crowd that Republicans and Sen. McCain are trying to make voters “scared” of him because they don’t have another strategy.

“Nobody thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face. So what they are going to try to do is make you scared of me,” Obama warned, “You know he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all of those other presidents on the dollar bills.”

Obama said the only strategy McCain has is to paint him as a “risky” candidate.

“He’s risky – that’s the argument,” an exasperated Obama said, “Seriously, that’s basically the argument. It’s like, well we don’t have very much to offer but he’s risky.”

The presumptive democratic nominee said what is far riskier, in his mind, is doing the same thing over – again relating McCain with President Bush.

“The question you have to ask yourself is – what’s more risky? Going ahead and bringing about changes that we know that we have to make, in order to ensure that our children have a better future. Or doing the same things over and over again even though we know they don’t work,” Obama asked the crowd, “We are in a time right now where it is too risky not to change.”

Obama is campaigning with Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill throughout the day, who also attempted to push back against Republican talking points during her introduction.

“They say that he’s arrogant. That he’s unpatriotic. Blah blah blah,” McCaskill said, “I know this man. He is humble. He is devoutly Christian. He loves his family more than anything else in the world. He cares about families. He reveres our men and women in uniform. And he is as red, white and blue as you could possibly get.”

In addition to pushing back against criticisms and questions over risk value – a feisty Obama also came loaded for bear in his first town hall since his overseas trip – attacking McCain on taxes.

Obama jokingly claimed that Wild Bill Hickock, a famous old Western gunslinger, was a distant cousin of his so McCain should be on the alert.

“I’m ready to duel John McCain on taxes. Right now, right here. I’m a quick draw,” Obama quipped.

“They’re going to say,  ‘He’s a tax and spend liberal Democrat’,” Obama warned, “But it’s the same ad over and over again. So let me be absolutely clear: If you are a family making less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes go up.”

By comparison, Obama said that one quarter of McCain’s tax cuts would go to people making millions of dollars a year.

Yes, we are really scared Obama with his thin resume, value and judgment not because of his patriotism.

McCain is the “risky” choice NOT Obama. If we vote for McCain we are going to get another 8 years of the Bush/McCain economy.

comparing Obama to britney spears.??? HUH. A ditsy white girl to a intelectual black man>?? This is insane?? The McCain camp has now become an official train wreck, Sad thing is I cant even feel sorry for the campaign anymore, no matter what rapper “dises” them. I am almost embarrased for them. Look its time for the GOP to cut their loses and find another Nominee. Huckabee has some class, maybe he could at least bring some class back to the party, even if he doesnt win. Which at this point he would have a better chance at winning then McCain. They are actually haveing people submit there own ad ideas at http://www.webmademan.com
I guess the thinking is, Anyone could make a better ad then this. Wow. I guess it doesnt matter. I dont think McCain can win as the Nominee anyway. Could you imagine McCain even having enough energy to run your local Mcdonalds. Seriously. Think about it next time your in line watching the Mcdonalds manager run around taking orders and shouting orders. McCain couldnt do it. So I ask You, how will McCain be president??? Looks as though the RNC got behind the wrong candidate and they will pay for it., Guess they should of let the primary season play out without trying to minupulate the outcome.. Good news is i think McCain is just about done, I wouldnt doubt the GOP ditch him at the last second and run a younger more charasmatic charachter. Did you see him knock all that stuff off the shelf at the supermarket. the video is at http://www.mccanes.com all the while barack obama is looking like an NBA super star, (arrogence and all) even taking time to stop and have a cigar break video at http://www.theobamaplan.com

Senator McCain and the GOP are telling the truth and Obama is whining again. Senator Obama is a commercially packaged little man with a little resume made to look important and expensive. Voters are beginning to see the real Obama.

You know, he doesn’t look like all of those other presidents on the dollar bills.” WE ALL CONCEDE OBAMA THAT YOU ARE DIFFERENT. THE QUESTION IS NOT THAT YOU ARE BLACK BUT YOUR EXPERIENCE VERSES YOUR ROCK STAR IMAGE THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS PAINTING. THE QUESTION IS YOUR CHARACTER AND THE FRIENDS THAT YOU HAVE ASSOCIATED WITH FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. THE QUESTION IS THAT YOU PLEDGE SOMETHING AND THEN CHANGE YOUR MIND (TOO MANY TO LIST). John McCain and campaign do not have to make the public scared of you—-you are doing just fine all on your own. NOW YOU ARE PROPOSING WAR, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEACE TALKS?

Are you making voters like McCain???!!!

McCaskill is goofy for Obama … Missouri voters won’t give her a 2nd term … such a ridiculous senator.

Posted by: Jackson | July 30, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

This is another BS talking point from Obama. The Clintons were made into racists by the Obama compaign. McCain will be made into a senile old man who wants support the Iraq war for 100 years. Obama has taken McCain statement about Iraq out of line, out of context. Obama made himself less scary, that’s scary in itself.
Nobody needs to scare us when Obama’s wife says that she’s not really proud of our country until Obama has a good chance of winning. Nobody needs to scare us when, for 7300 days, he is a devoted VIP member of the Trinity Church. Nobody needs to scare us when records show that he has spent only 143 days in the Senate before running for the Presidency. Nobody needs to scare us when he changes and shifts positions (Iraq, NAFTA, FISA, public financing, etc.) and characters for political expediency or leave a technical opening so he can further changes his mind back again.
And when we try to tell him, he says that we are dividing America. He is not America.

Posted by: young_voter | July 30, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

“I’m ready to duel John McCain on taxes. Right now, right here. I’m a quick draw,” Obama quipped. Then why reject the offer of townhall meetings?
McCain need do nothing to scare the American public about Obama. Obama’s doing an admirable job of it himself.

Posted by: Thomas | July 30, 2008, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Of course, people are scared of him. He spent 20 years in a church that preaches hatred toward white people, and said publically, “I don’t think my church is all that controversial.” I wonder how he’d feel if John McCain belonged to a church that preached hatred against blacks? Wasn’t Obama the first to call for the firing of Don Imus for insulting black athletes? Yet he thinks it’s perfectly okay for his mixed-race children to sit in a church where white people are blamed for all the ills of the world. That is, indeed, scary.

Posted by: Angje R | July 30, 2008, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

They’re right, this is exactly what McCain’s campaign is doing right now. Trying to paint Obama as the tax-hiking, big-revolutioney, scary future. They’re trying to make people fearful of change that Obama might bring.
If McCain has any chance of winning this thing, he needs to figure out WHY someone should vote for him other than because they don’t want to vote Obama.

One can’t the Republicans away from the race argument? Do these guys every learn?
To me the Obama patriotism question boil down to a question of race-scare tactic for the simple reason that I can’t remember if anyone ever questioned Scharwzenegger’s patriotism when he was running for governor of California.

McCain’s campaign handlers are again making it look like it’s a third term for George Bush with a basis campaign message of fear and smear so voters can overlook McCain’s daily gaffes, hypocrisy, and bad temper. That’s not even counting the bigots who aren’t with his campaign but are all too glad to help.

I admit to being afraid of Obama. The man wrote a private prayer to God in Israel, and stuck it in a holy wall where it could be found by someone and “leaked” to the press. Just in case it blew away and didn’t get leaked to the press, he xeroxed a copy of it and had it delivered to a couple of Israeli newspapers. Some people might find that amusing. I find it disturbing. Does this man have any scruples? As a Democrat, I was willing to vote for any Democratic candidate, as I always have. I was very much impressed with Barack Obama, but that was at the beginning of the campaign. The more I see of this man, the less I like him. I don’t want the Republicans in power again, but I just don’t see how I can vote for this man. It seems to be something new with this man every single day. I could overlook his church associations, his wife not being proud of America, etc. All that is marginal, as far as I’m concerned. What I can’t get past is the fact that he trotted over to Europe and tried to make himself President of the World. It disturbs me that he is talking policy, etc. with foreign leaders before he’s even wrapped up the Democratic nomination. Doesn’t this man realize that he still has to win the election before he starts to govern? If his ego is this big now, how big will it be when he actually takes the oath of office? I can’t believe I’m 54 years old, and contemplating voting for a Republican.

Posted by: rachel | July 30, 2008, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

Of course, Obama is frightening. Much of the money that has come to him over the Internet has come from foreign countries, including China and Arab countries. He finally admitted as much. Those who believe all the money he’s raised has come from black people and college kids are just plain naieve. Why do all these foreign people want this man elected? Do they have America’s best interests at heart, or their own?

Your post is highly subjective! It is easy to deny that the Republicans are using race-scare tactics. Do you think Nixon would have admitted that his Southern strategy was racist? Unfortunately, that’s the only thing Republicans know: make you scare of the other candidate. George Bush even used this same strategy against McCain. You would think the old man would know better.

Posted by: becky | July 30, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

Dear Ms. Carrie,
Its bad enough when Republicans print lies and half-truths about Obama. Why would a Democrat do such a thing?
Please, provide one shred of evidence that can be authenticated that Senator Obama “xeroxed a copy of it [his prayer] and had it delivered to a couple of Israeli newspapers.”
I too can’t believe that you are 54 or voting for a Republican.
Regards,
Kees

Posted by: Kees | July 30, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

The private Western Wall prayer was not leaked. That’s been debunked: check the Israeli news sources and this as well – “just got off the phone with a Ma’ariv spokesman who says that the accusation is “completely false,” and that he has no idea who these papers were quoting from Ma’ariv. “No official spokesman for Ma’ariv told this to any of the papers.” I’ve got some calls in to these papers to find out where they got the quote. (I’ll update here when I hear back.) He told me definitively that “the Obama campaign did not give us a copy of the letter or approve it for printing.”
Now what does it say about you that you’re so eager to embrace this smear?”

Posted by: Wiscon | July 30, 2008, 3:13 pm 3:13 pm

If the posts on this site are any indication, it is all too evident that most people clearly will be voting based on their visceral reactions and emotions stoked by candidates’ hype and “swiftboating” rather than based on any critical analysis of whether what they propose to do, and the direction in which they propose to take this country, make sense. It’s too bad we have such a “television news” culture.

Posted by: MikeinPhilly | July 30, 2008, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

McCain is losing it. Really. Compare him in 2000 to now. He’s not the same man he was. He gets confused. He can’t make a coherent statement. His campaign says he doesn’t speak for the campaign. He sounds timid then explosive. What’s scary is having McCain’s early stage dementia progressing through the oval office.

Posted by: William | July 30, 2008, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

McCain is the risky one, with his cadres of lobbyists and right wing think tanks running roughshod over the constitution.
It is imperative that we have a changing of the guard because the Republicans haven’t been minding the country’s business. For eight years they have been selling us out to the highest bidder and the damage done to the nation is mind-boggling.
There is no choice. Vote Obama. Vote for change. Vote the Republicans into the oblivion they have earned and so richly deserve.

The only candidate I’m scared of is one who would call his own wife a c-nt in public and who would sing a song about nuking Iran and killing millions of innocent people.
That’s John McCain, and he’s just as psychotic as Bush, for all the same reasons.

A recent poll demonstrated an overwhelming majority thinks Obama is the riskier candidate. Is he implying they are all manipulated by McCain? Maybe all clinging to their God and guns too.
Spectacularly unqualified, as a London paper said. It was very irresponsible of the party to put Obama forward as our candidate.

Posted by: SullivanGrandfield | July 30, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

It’s amazing reading these GOP posts.
Not one original thought… every word programmed into them, what they’ve heard… what they’re told to think.
When are you sheep for the GOP, going to *get* that you’re voting against what’s best for you, and your children?
Listen to McCain… all he does is attack Obama. He has no ideas to solve this country’s problems… if he’s elected, what you see now, is what is going to continue.
At least listen to what Obama says… do some research, and look at his policy thoughts. Then make a decision.
But to repeat the lies you’re told, without thinking for yourselves… what a waste of a brain. And more importantly, the future you’re forcing on your kids, by ignoring reality, and voting for the same policies that have put this country into this mess.

The funny part is that all you people slamming McCain are probably the same ones who were giddy with excitement when he was rumored to be a possible running mate for John Kerry. Now, it’s the “Bush/McCain” whatever, or he’s senile and crazy. John McCain hasn’t changed from four years ago when he was your hero!

Hmmm, well. The truth is, if the US continues along the Bush path it will be a has been could of would of should of country of….nit wits. Read about the Peloponnesian Wars and the Ottoman Empire to get an idea of where McCain and Bush are leading your country. If you want true understanding….read about how whale oil and furs were replaced by petroleum and synthetics respectively. Well, that same power struggle is occurring with respect to petroleum and “………”. There is always choice. Ask yourself if you are going to make a decision to throw the US on the same pile of failed civilizations that have made the same myopic, selfish, and obtuse decisions….they are there on the pile. But either way is fine, I am one of those educated elitists that can just take his intellectual capital to the highest bidder. Hows your NASCAR and “military blow everything up” resume look?:-)

Every political thread I read these days seems to be full of Republican activists spamming as “concerned democrats” where in the reality of my daily life I cannot find an intelligent argument from a McCain supporter. Even my parents and grandparents will vote for McCain but cannot openly say why. To be fair they’ve been voting republican since Reagan. They understand how Bush’s policies have led our country into decline. Though not at all excited about McCain they are afraid of Obama and I’m ashamed to say it is largely due to his color. They are good Americans but they grew up in a different time with a different perspective. I just pray there will be enough participation by the politically aware come election day to overcome the passive ignorance of the sheeple (still love ya tho, grandmother).

Facts: Obama is a rookie senator who postures himself as the new messiah and counts communists, anarchists, and anti-white racists as his mentors. His solution to you not being able to afford high gas prices is for you to buy a new, alternative energy car. His solution to Iran is to tell them to use his personal charisma to persuade them to be nice and not mean. He wants to pull out of Iraq and leave them to a civil war that will result in another, bigger, anti-american dictatorship in the world.
Facts: McCain is a decorated war hero, a POW who endured torture for the sake of his fellow POWs being freed before himself. He is a senior senator who has a long history of always following an independent course of bipartisan reform on almost every major issue in his career, even when it cost him harsh criticism and political support from his own party, and the presidential nomination. His solution to high gas prices is to both increase domestic production and find alternative sources for the future. His solution in Iraq is to stay the course until it is a safe, democratic republic that will no longer be a terrorist threat. His solution to Iran is to follow a tough, skeptical policy to force them to abandon nuclear armament by all and any necessary means.
Who is the leader? Who scares you?

You think most people wouldn’t elect a black president? The color of his skin should not matter nearly as much as his values/ideas. I don’t care if someone votes for McCain over Obama because they like his plans for the country better, but voting for him just because he’s white is just ridiculous in my opinion…

robtr — you are going to find that debating McCain will be child’s play for Obama. He’s fifty times more intelligent, and a much better orator, and he’s quick on his feet. McCain is already regretting his other challenges (Obama, go to Iraq), he will regret debating Obama. McCain has also has a penchant for shooting himself in the foot, and his staff has a penchant for shooting him in the nuts.

You know, he doesn’t look like all of those other presidents on the dollar bills.”
***************************************
What could Obama possibly mean by this statement? “look like” seems to refer to something about the physical appearance of those on our currency.
All the people on our bills are men. Well, Obama is a man. So it can’t be gender. What about age? None of the men on the currency (except maybe Benjamin. Wait, he wasn’t a President. Does Obama think none of us have NEVER seen a $100 bill?) look particularly old. In fact, Jefferson looks rather young.
Hmm, what could Obama possibly mean? I just have no idea. Somebody help me out here.

Obama made me afraid of Obama. His far left liberal views that resulted from his childhood upbringing, liberal indoctrination at Harvard associations with radicals during his Chicago political career and a very far left voting record at the state and national level all make for a very scary candidate. My major problem with McCain is just the opposite, he tends to suck up to the lefties just to get along.

I did not cut him off and have no clue where he came from–but I assume he was commenting on my “Obama ’08″ bumper sticker in the rear window of my car.
I’ve had that in my car for 8 months and nobody has said anything negative before. That’s a fuure McCain voter I suspect.
I wouldn’t have escalated much with my kid in the car but he quickly drove off and turned right like kitty cat he was.

GB: “Funny, none of you has posted any reason why McCain should be elected.”
Well, I’ll be honest, I do not like McCain’s support of the Patriot Act and other domestic security issues, and I do not particularly like either candidate’s ideas on the economy. McCain gets the edge, for me anyway, because:
He was right on the surge (years before Bush entertained the thought) when it wasn’t a popular idea. He was also right in several other criticisms regarding the war’s execution when Rumsfeld was calling the shots. We tend to forget (maybe we’re the senile ones) that for years he was one of the loudest critics about how the war was run (especially in the run up to the ’04 election). I agreed with him then. If anything, I would say Bush has since come around to the positions long held by McCain and others rather than McCain conforming to Bush’s views.
McCain has an energy plan that is more actionable, and more likely to get support from all interested parties than any alternative, imo. I believe McCain’s plan encompasses short- mid- and long-term solutions. There is no real magic bullet short term solution, but McCain’s plan combines offshore drilling (this will not provide immediate supply, but will hopefully ease some of the market jitters that are contributing to the climbing price of oil), with more nuke plants (a mid-range solution we should have been implementing for a while now), along with a drive towards renewable energy sources (a mid- to long-term solution that is embraced by both candidate, albeit with somewhat different ideas on how to get there).
To be fair, I am disappointed in McCain for going negative recently. It’s probably what he believes he needs to do to get noticed, but frankly I don’t think it suits him one bit.

Its amazing that when a white man appears presidential and projects the image of a leader here and abroad, its ok. But as soon as a black man does this, he’s arrogant and egotistical. Nothing, NOTHING
justifies voting for a 71 year old, insane, ill informed, old man that can’ tell the difference btwn Suni and Shiates, thinks Iraq and pakistan share a border, and himself admitted to not knowing much about the economy.
When you consider voting for McCain, because Obama doesn’t have the “Experience”, ask yourself, what really motivates you?

P — that’s fair enough. I respect McCain. However, because he is fighting an uphill battle, having had both hands tied behind his back compliments of the idiot in the White House, he has reversed course on many of his positions and adopted positions closer to Bush’s. I believe he is doing that out of expediency, and somewhat a feeling of desperation, but McCain says he is straight talking so we have to take him at his word. If he gets elected, he’ll be beholden to the same neocons and far right that Bush kowtows to. So in good conscience, I cannot support McCain. He is clearly content enough with the way things are, and really isn’t intending to push any envelopes to make things better because that will require ruffling the feathers of the wealthy and powerful.

Posted by: geevill | July 30, 2008, 4:31 pm 4:31 pm

Well, I’m certainly not for McCain, but the only reason I’ve found that people support Obama is because he’s not Bush.
That’s not really a vote FOR someone.
As for Obama being the candidate of new ideas. Please go and read history. Mr. Obama proposes NOTHING new. It is the package, marketing and messenger that is new NOT the content of the package. A piece of **it is still a piece of **it even if you wrap it up in the prettiest wrapping paper, cover it with ribbons and bows, and spray perfume on it.
In general, elections typically come down to choosing the “lesser of two evils” rather than coming out in FAVOR of someone.
And 250k really doesn’t go far in high COLA. Maybe for a single person. Maybe even a couple. But add kids, a mortgage and such to the equation and you’ve got a problem.
It doesn’t matter WHO wins in November. The so-called “Bush tax cuts” will expire in 2010 and unless CONGRESS acts EVERYONE’s taxes will go up.

Who is riskier?
Obama has run a great campaign. McCain imploded, was saved by backing into a nomination because of a weak field of other Republicans, and now is imploding again.
Obama has command of the issues. McCain, well, fortunately he’s got the media protecting him from his own words.
Obama wants to reverse the risky Bush approach to foreign policy. McCain wants to give that approach a third term.

This is typical Democratic party BS. There are good reasons to be scared of Obama, and I don’t need McCain to tell me about them. With 20-years of membership in a racist, anti-American church; with an unrepentant domestic terrorist as a campaign advisor/fundraiser; with close ties to Tony Rezko, now serving time; with a hard-line Communist as his mentor during his younger years; and with virtually no accomplishments in the political arena, there are loads of uncertainties surrounding him. His economic rhetoric is close to Marxist. His philosophy on taxes is the typical Democratic philosophy (more revenue through higher taxes) that has been disproved both in this country and in many of the “newly independent states” from the former Soviet Union that adopted a flat tax. And his health care plan threatens to bankrupt the country.
I got all that from reading and listening to Obama’s campaign speeches and debates. I don’t need the Republican party to tell me that Obama would be a disaster for the country – the second coming of Jimmy Carter (not JFK).
What is really scary is that the libs feel that none of the above items should be considered cause for concern.

There are no free lunches: if you enjoy using infrastructure facilities such as water and sewer, drinking water, roadways and bridges and such, its the people, everyone, who contribute through a tax base to keeping things working. At the federal level there is national defense, Interstate Highways and other programs needing everyone’s support through taxes. If you are so anti tax, go and find an island somewhere and live there. The trickle down economic concept is an absolute failure so wake up Americans and accept responsibility for what makes American a great nation; the collective efforts of everyone.

Nice try Obama – but it won’t fly.
Another attempted diversion from the facts. I’m not scared of you, I’m TERRIFIED of what you and your puppet masters have planned for this country.
One hundred forty-three days in the Senate, anti-gun, pro-abortion votes during your time in the IL Senate.
A proven history of consorting with racists, terrorists, anti-American and anti-US Military agitators, embrace of reparations and black liberation theology, using surrogates to destroy dissent or competition, race-baiting, constant desire to raise taxes, aversion to drilling in America to reduce our dependence on foreign oil in the long-term, pandering, I could go on and on.
You say you’d debate Senator McCain ‘anytime, anyplace’ yet spend most of your time avoiding just that.
You snub our wounded soldiers in Germany and deny the results of their hard work under the direction of knowledgable commanders in the field.
This current remark is another is a long list of race-baiting comments designed to paint anyone who doesn’t worship you as a racist.
Oh, I guess I should mention that I’m an American conservative who is multiracial (part of it American black) who SEES RIGHT THROUGH YOU. I’m from Chicago and have a good memory of what it was like as you joined forces with Emil Jones, Jeremiah Wright, Father Pleger, the City council, and others to keep blacks angry and divided. You, like the rest of the hustlers, did this for no reason except your desire for power. It’s amazing how you race hustlers keep moving up while those you claim to care for stay downtrodden and angry foot soldiers.
Someone has to say it – this is so similar to the trickery that keeps Palestinians downtrodden and blaming Israel for their troubles instead of bringing to account the so-called leaders who’ve lied and used them for decades.
Racists/liberals/progressives/radicals are the same, no matter where you find them.
I WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU—EVER!! Your type seeks to destroy all that makes this country great. And guess what, I found this information on my own – that’s what thinking people do.

The implication is that all republicans are racist – but isn’t it racist to make such a blanket statement?
By the way, as long as I’ve lived, there has only been ONE president on the dollar bill – If it isn’t on a teleprompter, then Obama will fall over his words in a manner that would make President Bush look like JFK. Every time you hear Uhh, Obama is searching for the best way to say something in a manner that he can later parse, just like many lawyers that we all hate.

McCain is an American hero. He valiantly endured 5 and 1/2 years as a P.O.W. during the Vietnam War. I will never question that. However, the truth remains that he is also an adulterer who cheated on his first wife multiple times. The man particpated in fornication. PERIOD.

Are you kidding me? Wasn`t McCain invited to the debate Obama by the journalist Assoc. of people of colour but refused to show up.
Obama has proven on every occasion he is more intelligent than McCain. McCain`s academic record is noting compared to Obama. No wonder he was 6 from the bottom in his military class of 980 students.

Scared in Idaho:
I certainly did pick up on your satire, however, my fear of Obama becoming our next president has nothing at all to do with any of the particulars that you mentioned.
I could care less if Obama is black (I don’t believe he is anyway, so that would not be my problem with him), brown, orange, purple, green or yellow.
I could also care less if he is Muslim, Buddhist, Unitarian, or otherwise.
My main fears about Obama are regarding his inexperience; his failure to include anything substantative in any of his “plans” or great speeches; his poor judgment in his choice of associates; and his failure to stick to his guns on any of the issues he previously campaigned in support of.
Unfortunately, the Republican Party does not have a great candidate either, as they have not bothered to prepare an heir apparent, having been much too busy making excuses and propping up their golden boy, GWB, for the last eight years.
So, I also fear that my choice in November will once again have to fall into the “lesser of two evils” category.

McCaskill said, “I know this man.
Yet when asked if she could name a single accomplishment that the person she supports has made besides street organizing, in typical 0-bama (that is a zero) supporters fashion, McCaskill said that she could not name one, but it does not matter to her any way to support a phony.

Come to think of it isn’t it Bush’s team running McCain’s Campaign now?
Issues We care About!
The Republicans and the Bush administration should be held accountable not only for the cost of the Iraq War but the 492 billion dollar deficit.
- Part of the cost are the 30,000 USA Troops wounded.
-Start laying the groundwork to move the the US away from oil dependency.
As soon as the 2008 election is over The Republicans will start running for the next elections in 2010 and 2012. This is the reason gridlock doesn’t help this country.
The Republicans as a group should “pay a price” for the Gridlock.

Hey Obama,
Regarding the part of the article that says “Obama warned, ‘You know he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all of those other presidents on the dollar bills.’” Is this an attempt to shame some of the voters into voting for you? News flash, this is America where we have to work for what we have. It appears you want it given to you just for shame’s sake. Why don’t you just work for it? If (big if) McCain raises any of those points you mentioned then cry about it, until then, work for it without trying to solicit “shame” votes. Shame on you!

Well said.
—————————-
With all due respect to the posters with military backgrounds, get over yourselves. Yes, you’ve served honorably and probably sacrificed a lot, and some sense of ceremony or narrative is needed to make sense and make right the horrors of war; however, that doesn’t make you any better than the rest of your FELLOW CITZENS who didn’t serve for whatever reason of choice or circumstance. The fact is that a good bit of us vets VOLUNTEERED (non-draftees) to SERVE our country and fellow Americans, so dismount the high horse. And yes, I was in Somalia and Haiti, my dad and father-in-law in ‘Nam, my grandfather in WWII, etc., etc., just like the majority of Americans.
What should PO vets is when a corrupt administration trashes the constitution and distorts intelligence to take our country into an illegal war of aggression. I was proud of being part of the mightiest citizen army of the mightiest democracy in the world, that, yes, we kicked major butt, but only when JUSTIFIED; that we weren’t bullies or the tools of greedy and corrupt leaders. I’m just glad I was already discharged when this sham of an Iraq War was launched. War–what is it good for? Petty vengeance for dad and control of oil.
With all the money we’ve spent on the war, we could’ve given health care to all, implemented clean energy sources, cured cancer, colonized Mars . . . heck, even developed fusion power and warp drive. Okay, a bit over the top, but so is the obscene amount of money (and lives) spent on the war. We actually could have made great strides toward some of these objectives, if we only had the collective will and courage.

There Obama goes again, somebody pulling the scared card on him again? Pool fellow! I feel better about him to know he is a cousin of Wild Bill Hickock. Is he really challenging McCain to a duel on taxes? Does that mean he will do a town hall meeting with him? Probably not, that requires some debating skills and he is just a soundbite candidate.
McCain is a maverick who knows the issues and thinks for himself. It is not good enough to call him Bush. They are as different as night and day.
We are not afraid of Obama, we just do not want him as President. He has lied too many times about his church, his associations with Rezko, Ayers, etc. Most of all he has no experience, very little knowledge of the issues, and he is a lousy debater. That is precisely why he will not do the town hall forums with McCain. We are not afraid of him, just his lack of experience and judgement and all of his repetitive backpedaling.

Posted by: EGNAHC08 | July 30, 2008, 8:44 pm 8:44 pm

SandyB — you said it. McCain is the Republican “heir apparent.” That is the problem. He believes he has paid his dues and now he “deserves” to be president. Not so. I urge you to listen carefully to Obama, to give him the benefit of the doubt. He does have solid plans, and he is articulating them. Many people have been preconditioned, by the McCain campaign “press feed” machine, not to really hear Obama. This is especially so if they are Republicans to begin with. As a result, they hear McCain say “Obama doesn’t have a plan” and they repeat the mantra even though it is false. There is no doubt whatever (McCain has sais so) that McCain agrees with the direction this country has taken for 8 years. The only hope of reversing course, restoring dignity to America and meaning to our constitution, and having America be seen as a world leader again, is to elect Obama. Please look hard and keep an open mind. Are you really content to think that things will pretty much remain as they are if McCain is elected? My guess is you are not. I know it is difficult, but try to see the “press play” of the campaigns for what it is, and ask yourself, realistically, which candidate can you have confidence will turn things around?

The only one I hear right now making an issue about Barack Obama’s color and middle name is Barack Obama.
If you get behind in the polls because of going to Europe and the Middle East for a week, I guess the best way to stay relevant and make up ground is to play the race card again. It worked so well for him against Hillary Clinton.
I expect we’ll see a lot of that in the coming months. You can’t disagree with Obama politically, if you’re against him, you must be racist. If you’re running against him, he can’t be anointed as “The Chosen One”, so you must be …you guessed it…racist.

Posted by: JacksonGore | July 30, 2008, 9:21 pm 9:21 pm

Obama is risky. We usually do not on purpose elect someone who has the tag “risky” next to their name. He has the Black Liberation Church behind him, anti White anti everything most Christians and good Americans believe in that is why he is considered “risky” not even counting his shady friends or his total lack of experience. We don’t actually need another attorney in Washington, they have NO ethics, that’s been proven many times.

Obama didn’t have the good sense and judgment to put his hand over his heart during the Pledge. I find that incredibly stupid. Was he making a statement? or dumb? what was it? everyone else did the right thing. This man is a nobody from nowhere, the dems plucked out of chicago, overhauled him and extra-overhauled his wife and are trying to put them over on the stupid white americans. Well, some of us can read him why? we have read his BOOKS. If the voters would read the books they would know the man, and it isn’t a pretty thing! McCain will start using Obama’s own words soon, they express if things get bad he will go Muslim, he says that! He is a closet Muslim and to believe otherwise is to be in the crowd Hitler once captured with fancy speeches. it’s risky.

Obama is far from being arrogant this nothing but repug lies and proganda. They trying to paint Obama into an image in which they feel they can eventually defeat him. They are playing on ignorance and fear. It is amazing how anyone would want to elect more of the same type of people back in office. I guess the saying is true birds of a feather flock together.. The repuke party is falling apart and people are foolish enough to continue to support them! I really do not care about party lines.. let’s get people in office that are smart, intelligent and capable of driving change…not the same old typical garbage that has been in the oval office for 8 years. Honestly I wonder how Bush and company sleep at night… maybe it the millions of dollars they have made on the backs of their blind followers and the rest of the American people they con….

McCain has never mentioned Obama’s race or commented on his name being “different” or that he “looks different.”
Yet Obama keeps bringing that up and accusing McCain of being racist.
It’s just not right.
Obama is not who he says he is.

Posted by: Lezident | July 31, 2008, 9:11 am 9:11 am

Journalists and commentators always avoid taking it to the next logical step (and I’m not really sure why)…weren’t Obama’s statements not just a simple case of playing the race card, but actually racist? Think about what he said. Neither McCain nor anyone from his campaign has EVER suggested that because of Obama’s skin color he shouldn’t be President and they have never employed any strategy to “scare” voters by envoking his race. Obama is suggesting that BECAUSE McCain is white, those racist intentions MUST be his true intentions. He is suggesting that BECAUSE voters are largely white they WILL be “scared” by his skin color. He is suggesting that there is something wrong with previous Presidents (the ones “on the currency”) BECAUSE they were white. Obama wasn’t playing the race card. He was playing the racist one.

Obama is actually the one starting the racism talk. he is the racist. look at the crazed , hostil, angry, hateful and ignorant pastor he stayed with for 20 yesrs. He is the worst racist i have ever hear speak and it is truly a shame when racist are allowed to minister a church and advise a presidenrtial candidate. I think Obama should be run out of the presidential race in facor of a democrat who is considerably less racist.

It’s Barack Obama that doesn’t have another strategy. Can he say ANYTHING other than “They’re trying to make you scared of me because I’m black.” We get it – you have some AA blood. That’s not a problem. The problem is that you have nothing other than that pathetic pre-emptive strike – and nobody’s pulling out the race card except you, Mr. “I am the symbol of all that’s wonderful in the world!”
Get over yourself, BO, and step out of the race. You’re woefully unqualified and unelectable, and not because of the small percentage of black blood in you. It’s your judgment, associations and character – they’re all awful.
