Obama ‘Puzzled’ by Frenzy Over Iraq War Plan Comments
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama told reporters he was “puzzled” by the press coverage he received on Thursday when he held two separate press conferences to explain his plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.
On Thursday in Fargo, N.D,, Obama told reporters in a morning press conference that he will “continue to refine” his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq in 16 months.
Reporters immediately jumped on the comments that showed that Obama’s expressed openness to adjust his long-held 16-month withdrawal plans was at odds with the stance that he took during the primary campaign.
At his second hastily called press availability Thursday, Sen. Obama insinuated that the McCain campaign had primed the press and were to blame for the interpretation of his position.
En route to a speech in St Louis today, the Senator told reporters on his plane that the news cycle his comments caused was perplexing.
“I was a little puzzled by the frenzy that I set off by what I thought was a pretty innocuous statement, which is that I am absolutely committed to ending the war,” he said.
Obama reiterated his commitment to his withdraw plan again. “I will call my joint chiefs of staff and give them an assignment and that is to end the war,” he said. “I think what’s important is to understand the difference between strategy and tactics. I have always believed that our invasion of Iraq was a strategic blunder.”
He continued, “The tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the withdrawal. Those are things that are all based on facts and conditions, and you know I’m not somebody who, unlike George Bush, is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions. I want to pay attention to what’s happening on the ground.”
Sen. Obama — who plans a trip to Iraq this month — took issue with reporters who “finely calibrated” his statements, and specific words, on his Iraq War plan. “I wasn’t saying anything that I hadn’t said before,” Obama said.
“I don’t think in anyway it is inconsistent with prior statements and doesn’t change my strategic view that this war has to end and that I am going to end it as president," he repeated again.

Americans should be very concerned about Obama “being puzzled over his comments on Iraq.” Free Ride does not get it because he has had a free ride and has not been vetted by the press. Now that he is the party’s nominee, he gets more scrutiny, particularly when he screws up like on his comments on Iraq. It is good that he is being held accountable, though for this Hillary Democrat, I will be voting for John.

Did poor Barry think he controlled the press???
Get a clue, pal–if you FLIP FLOP, they will call you on it. Since you do it almost daily, they just wait for the next one to come out.
Whining that the McCain camp primed them is just plain wimpy and dishonest.
Backtrack Obama is his new name.

The journalist and newspapers did a poor job of reporting. In speeches going back to 2007 he always said he would not be careless about the withdrawals and include input from those on the ground.
Poor reporting and very littl critical thinking being done when covering both candidates lately.

If it was good governing to withdraw troops on an absolutely inflexible schedule regardless of new developments, any stubborn moron would make an excellent president.
Look no further than the last eight wonderful years of Cowboy George to see how this theory works out.
People who live their lives like that are ultimately taken care of through a form of natural selection, but it takes a bit longer with those born into rich families with political connections.

Oh yes, the media is trying to influence this election. McCain is given a free pass from the media regarding his flip flops on Iraq. First, Mcwar stated USA will be in Iraq for 100 years, then he said maybe 50 years. Then he said, in his dream USA be in Iraq until the year 2013. Last week he said “we will withdraw, but we will withdraw with victory and honor”. Notice in his earlier statement he gave a timetable for withdrawing and now he is not given a timetable. The media has clearly showing their bias.

Come on guys think for just a little I don’t even think at this point Congress can even be able to do such a thing however they did prommised so to win their o6 majority in the house. After all McCain’s so called military experience he led us into the most senseless war. If as a military guy and all the experience in the senate McCain got the war wrong then why is he even in the senate, let alone run for president.
I can not vote for a person who gets his area of expertise so wrong. What is the point?

Hey, the media got it wrong again. The Media just can’t get it right. Obama plans to talk to the generals and learn “first hand” in a few hours the entire situation in Iraq but plans to continue on with his full plan of removing all of our troops from Iraq in 16 months no matter what the generals tell him. Obama has judgment based on his own judgment.
Posted by: Anne | July 5, 2008, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
HonestAbe,
You are exactly right, Obama has not changed his position…
You see the media needs to make this a “horse race” to keep ratings up. That is why if they find even some fake chink in Obama’s armor they go after it and trump it up. Can you imagine what would happen if they quit propping this old senile fool McBush up? The race would all but be over and this is only July!
So they throw it out there on the blogs and immediately all of the ignorant die hard sore loser Clintonites and Republican McCrazies jump on it and pile on!
Too bad for all the Clinton sore losers and the McBushes, because it won’t change the outcome in November.
The country wants a change and does NOT want 4 more years of BUSH!
Obama will win in a landslide come November!!!!

He used the word “redefine” which simply means no changes to my original plan—doesn’t anyone understand. And it doesn’t matter what the general say we are going to leave Iraq, left them have their country back to lose it to the terrorists and let the terrorists grow in strength to come over here and get us. Hey, Obama let’s remove all of our soldiers from all of the bases around the world and just sit tight and wait and see what happens.

The freshman Senator is in for a very rude awakening when/if he is finally allowed to talk to people who actually serve in the military, know how troop movements work, and what is involved in moving a force of that magnitude out of that area. Now is not the time to put someone in the Oval office who was not even a cub scout when it comes to responsible management of the military. I have personally watched him in an interview say that he would move troops against the advice of his generals because he was the CiC and I do not find it acceptable to lose more lives in an unsuccessful retreat than were lost in Nam.

Hey Davis:
It might actually be better that the pathetic media keeps pushing the perception that McCain can actually win. This will help keep the Obama campaign and Obama supporters on their toes until November. We don’t just want to beat McCain we want to destroy McCain and also take full control of the House and Senate.
Posted by: HonestAbe | July 5, 2008, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm
waggdogg, the meaning of refine means “to improve or perfect by pruning or polishing”
If Bush and McCain had refined thier policies, our troops would not have died and the country will not be in debt, the economy will not be going down south, we might be paying $4.00 in gas.

General Colin Powell has met with Obama back in June and is thinking about endorsing him. I hope he does. He would send the right message to the world!
I’m supporting Barack Obama because our troops want to come home and know that McCain/Bush/Cheney/Rove what to keep them fighting a senseless war. For what? There was no WMD! They destroyed Powell’s reputation on this. The media played along back then! Now with stories like this they are helping the Republicans once again. Score one for Rove he has the media dancing to his tune again. I can hardly wait until John Edwards debates Karl Rove.
Colin Powell endorsing Obama would shock the world and hopefully rock all the scary Republican attack dogs who always win.

You guys should mark my words today, if you vote McCain in, you would go to not only Canada and Mexico in search of food but Cuba. Am happy to come from a country where things are done well and where issues count in elections and not what the opponent or the press term the other guy. You should be ashamed of yourselves, your $10 billion is wasted in another country (Iraq); most of your people including your veterans are hungry and homeless; your roads are broken; your educational system is at the brink of collapse; the high gas price is killing you. Do you still want the same, probably the worst for the next 4 – 8 years? Your destiny is in your hands now, so be wise!!!

A tie at this point means trouble for Obama. He needs to come out of the convention with at least a 10 – 20 point lead to have a chance. Most of these polls do not reflect the electoral college factor – WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC – NOT A PURE DEMOCRACY, AND RIGHTLY SO. Sad, but many of you guys either don’t know the difference or just don’t know what the heck I am talking about!

JFK served in the U.S. Congress for 6 years, starting almost immediately after his discharge from his own military service, where he was injured in combat, and then served 7 years as a U.S. Senator before being elected President. He was an author, but chose to write non-fiction books about the heroism of other members of the U.S. military, and not about fictional events such as his Kansas roots and living on foodstamps before they were introduced.

People criticizing Obama for legitimate reasons (e.g. issues, experience) are not racist. But I have to wonder about the people who insist on calling him stupid. I realize that “stupid” is what people with small vocabularies always call other people they don’t like, but since Obama is so obviously NOT stupid, I do wonder about the motivations.

jock – what do you think about the current relevance of the electoral college? I certainly understand its historical base and why it was established because of demographics and distance. I have seen a number of proposals for revisions that would nullify the effects of states like CA/FL from overpowering the heartland. I’m a little torn to see the votes of the people being tread upon as they are. Military votes being tossed. Votes in early states that were thrown away on “they didn’t get the nomination so we’ll put ‘em where we think they oughta go”, and the like. Do you think that we might have evolved as a nation to actually allow the highest office in the land to be decided by the true will of the people?

People think that Mccain has national security experience because he got shot when he was flying a fighter jet. People need to realize that Mccain didn’t design any millitary strategy or didn’t give any millitary instruction from a high ranking position. He was also a pow and didn’t have a chance to learn or give more attention to national security related issues during the vietnam war. This means he is a hero but doesn’t have the necessary experience to make decision on national security. As a proof we saw when he was confused betweem Shite and sunni. Apart from that he is too old to be alert on 24/7 to examine and assess the national security situation of the nation. I think all I have mentioned so far is even clear for high school students.

skybreader – that’s a fine emotional speech, and I salute your spouse’ service. But I don’t see how it qualifies John McCain to be President. I’m basing my vote on policies, not romantic military associations, and I just don’t like McCain’s policies – and I didn’t like them when they were originally Bush’s, either.

“skybeader – i think the answer is pretty obvious: McCain got alot of preferential treatment and free passes throughout his military career because his father was a famous admiral.”
Just post the links. Those little, pesky, UCMJ records are just so public. You can cert yourself with this one (or as many as you would like) link. BTW, they do end with a very traditional three-character suffix to show their authenticity before newbies click. That’s like .com, .org, you know those pesky things…

skybeader – actually, not all of McCain’s military records are public. i think that there might be something to this – after all, he did crash alot of planes and get alot of preferential treatment even though he was near the bottom of his class at anapolis…

Jimbo – first of all, I’m not a lib, I’m a moderate. Second of all, I don’t recall any carbombs in Chicago killing any US soldiers this week, like what happened in Iraq on Wednesday. Third, limited good news doesn’t mean the war is over yet. No real political progress has been made and without that, the surge is just a lull between the next round of fighting.

Hmmm. Checking back on this board, I see the dregs of the internet are continuing to degenerate into depravity. Let’s see who can call each other the worst names, and whoever succeeds in disgusting the most people, that’s how we will choose the next President of the United States! God bless America!
Are you all 10 years old? – no, most 10-year-olds have actually developed some aspects of human decency. I would despair for America, if I didn’t know that out here in the real world, America still has people worth fighting for.
Honestly, people, do you ever listen to yourselves? For shame.

You seem to have forgotten Obama recently said he didn’t mind the high gas prices, he just wishes it hadn’t happened so quickly.
And Gore is famous for saying he wanted high gas prices so people would cut back.
Don’t think for a second that the democrats would do a DAMN THING about the cost of gas. They love it. It suits their agenda.

“Sen. Obama insinuated that the McCain campaign had primed the press and were to blame for the interpretation of his position.”
That is exactly correct. I do not want to find out what it would be like when he tries to explain himself through a second press conference after a period of hours when he has made a boneheaded comment that he didn’t realize he did, after 20 years of listening to the shapers of his thinking, when those he irritated have nukes. I think most people would say “collateral in the millions”. Not worth the risk.

You seem to be under the misguided impression that the Republicans can do a damn thing about the cost of oil. No amount of drilling is going to get us out of this mess. The ever increasing demand by China and India, to name a few, for the worlds energy supplies is here to stay and increased production by U.S. oil companies will benefit no one except themselves.

Nothing was over blown He changed his stance and time table. After being so Infatic on His Iraq plans.
When you change your mind, ideas and how you stand on you own polices and platforms, It shows instabilty.
He can lead a country or have the people believe in him, when he doesn’t know what he believes in Himself.
The Past two weeks He has let americans down with his changing his mind and stance. Trying to fluff it over only makes him look worse.

If who ever against the Iraq war for any reason, then would you serve the country for any reason? If you don’t serve the country in uniform like Obama, then the Iraq war in some how, some way is not your business.

Gee and what mess would that be? Being ahead in the polls for weeks, you mean that mess?
Let’s face it you dried up die hard Hillary sore loser – you lost, now “get over it sweetie.”
I can’t wait for the first debate when your new old fool senile candidate goes up against Barack. Sorry he won’t have a prepared speech or a “hand picked” town hall crowd to rely on this time…
Barack is going to kick that old fools butt!
And as far as Hillary goes, well we can see just what she is doing nowadays. Begging money from Obama and supporters like me to pay off all her bad debts from her totally mis-managed campaign!
American really dodged a bullet on that one. Most people in America would never want a president that stands up in front of the country and LIES about being under SNIPER FIRE! Too reminiscent of her “has been” husband BillyBob wagging his finger at all of us lying about “not having sex with that woman.”
Good riddence to that delusional sore loser Hillary!
Vote for McBush if you want you and the handful of die hard loser supporters she has left. Because it won’t make a dent in the coming Obama LANDSLIDE in November!!!

The media is simply trying to keep this a horse race… I mean it is just July and they need to keep the ratings up all summer until the reruns end and the new TV season begins!
If they were to tell the truth and reveal all the flip flops and “senior moments” this old fool has been having, well it would already be over!
Just wait until October. The media (well except for FOX Noise) wants Barak in there. They will stretch it out until October until the new TV season starts (to keep ratings up) and then the hammer is coming down on McBush!
Obama is going to win in a landslide!!!

As far as Backtrack Obama debating McCain, McCain will rip Obama a new one! Remember, Obama lost all of the 21 previous debates…why, because he doesn’t have Axelrod writing his responses and he doesn’t have a teleprompter. Face it, Obama can’t speak on the stump. He has great rhetoric from written speeches, but, when he has to respond on his own, he flip-flops and goes all over the place. McCain will destroy Backtrack Obama in a debate…Obama is waiting because he knows this and is afraid. I can’t wait to see NoBama respond….”uhh…ummm…uhhh….I agree with Mrs. Clinton”. LOL…what an idiot Obama is!

Obama doesn’t get it. In 2002 he made a speech opposing the war, without access to Intelligence paper, trumpeting his superior judgement over then generals, without the responsibility of voting since he was not in Senate at the time. Now in 2008, he said that he will listen to the generals and refine his strategy. Talk about two-facedness and hypocrisy at the highest level.

Obama is exercising common sense when dealing with ending the botched war in Iraq.
1. He has consistenly stated this is a war that should not have been waged.
2. He has brain power enough to know we have to withdraw with a better plan than the one used to get us into this mess.
3. He also knows there are several permanent bases that we have to deal with due to the Bush/McCain plan of staying there for an eternity. It’s not our land and we should stay out of the affairs of the middle east that are none of our business.
It is an oil war, simple and true and it does not have anything to do with protecting Israel.
Any commander in chief has to use credible intellegence when dealing with a matter of this magnitude as he weighs the pros and cons on any troop withdrawal timeline.
The media is grilling him because they have nothing of interest to cover right now.
They need to grill McCain on how he just by chance planned a trip to Columbia when the hostages were freed.
Was someone planning a crafted McCain campaign moment by possibly aligning him with this historical posistive international story that has a domestic interest due to the 3 freed Americans?
Now that is a story worth investigating. Not this lukewarm, lunch leftovers, grilling of Obama on a subject he has already consistenly declared a stance on months ago during the primaries.
Where there is smoke there is fire. What a bunch of BS.

Clarity stated:
The media is grilling him because they have nothing of interest to cover right now.
**********************************
The media is grilling Obama now because they have seen through his empty logic and substance. I knew this was going to happen this summer. The media, who was so pro-Obama during the primaries, have now turned their backs on him. Remember, in the early days of the primaries, there was the idea that the media (GOP Controlled) wanted Obama to be the candidate. The GOP knew Hillary would be impossible to beat in the GE. So, the media got behind Obama, along with the DNC, and StupidDelegates, to “select” Backtrack Obama, because he would be the easier to beat. I’m laughing, because NoBama and his supporters thought he would just waltz in and take the White House. However, now that NoBama has become arrogant and basically stupid, the media is vetting him. America sees him for what he is, a liar. Thats why he’s outspending McCain 6 to 1, but can’t close the deal. Because of his flip-flopping on major issues, he’s losing many Independents, the few Hillary supporters he may have had, and even many of his own supporters (me for one). He actually thought he had this election won, even made a presidential emblem for himself. Obama is a fruitcake and now, he will suffer to the end. The GOP hasn’t even started their onslught of attacks on him. They are waiting, just patiently waiting, slowly attracting the prey (Obama) into the trap and then they’ll pounce on him and that will be it. Obama, because he is weak and no intellect, is succumbing to the GOP. Make fun of McCain, but he has taken a stand and has not wavered. You NoBama supporters thought McCain would be an easy win, its time for you to quit drinking the Kool Aid and realize that Backtrack Obama will not win the GE this year.

Let’s not forget that Afghanistan is falling apart because they had to use all of the troops in Iraq. The success of one should not be at the sacrifice of the other. We started out in Afghanistan because of the real terrorist threat there. Most soldiers are being killed in Afghanistan than are being killed in Iraq. I wouldn’t call that success, I would call that a failure.

Exactly what McCain was saying when he said that Obama is untrustworth. This is definitely a BIG problem for BHO and it has taken a long time for the press to catch onto his ability to delude the public. So with more smoke and mirrors, BHO chastises the media by describing them as ‘in a frenzy’ by his statements.

He has no real plan for “hard working Americans”. He wants to keep giving the rich tax cuts. The military servicemen will never come home, the elderly will have no security and the young will suffer too. Tuition hikes are stopping the bright students from studying.Jobs will continue to disappear.Gloomy enough for you? Then don’t vote repuclican this election. Give the democrats a chance.

What else can we say? He lies. Trying to one-up others in the debates, he insisted that he would have the troops out in 16 months, maximum. Then, he stupidly said later that if there was a crisis and Al Quaeda came back, we would go back in. Whoa! Anyone debating him on these issues can call him out on his previous words. Like he says, however, “words don’t matter!” Once a double-talker, always a double-talker. Same as lie after lie after lie. By the time he has evolved far past his current greeness, it could be too late on his stupid judgement.
