Obama Says McCain’s Negative Shift Is a Sign of Problems

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama capitalized on Sen. John McCain’s ad today, saying the Arizona Republican’s perceived negative shift is a sign of problems in McCain’s campaign.

"You haven’t heard a positive thing out of that campaign in a month," Obama said during a picnic in Unity, Mo. "All they do is try to run me down and you know this in your own life — if somebody doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, that means they’ve got some problems of their own."

McCain released a new ad today comparing Obama, the Illinois Democrat, to celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

"The latest one they’ve got me in an ad with Paris Hilton," Obama said with a laugh. "I’ve never met the woman."

The Obama campaign quickly responded with an ad of its own, calling McCain’s attack the "low road." At a town hall earlier today in Rolla, Mo., Obama said he hasn’t seen an ad yet where McCain talks about his plan for the country.

The McCain campaign defended its ad.

"Pointing out your opponent’s worldwide celebrity is not the ‘low road,’ and neither is pointing out that he opposes oil drilling and supports higher taxes," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

At each of his three stops throughout Republican-dominated southwest Missouri today, Obama included criticisms of McCain, President Bush and the Republican party.

One would think it was a campaign for High School Class President.
McCain is disappointing

Most adults will find the comparison apt — and amusing.

Not the low road aye?
I come from a family of oil-
Guess what, I oppose more drilling because as long as you greedy b a s t a r d s can make a buck, you will- we’ll NEVER move forward with energy in the country until someone puts their foot DOWN.
Second, McCain- all you have shown is that you are trying to target the truly ignorant and uneducated. When a candidate has to resort to the politically oblivious to get him elected to run the country, that says plenty.
McCain- YOU ARE THE SNOB, YOU ARE OUT OF TOUCH. If being a POW gives you merit to be president, I know a few soldiers who would do a better job than you.
GO HOME. High road, Please-
From an oil family, Vietnam Vet Pappy and myself.

Oh there goes Obama stop exaggerating, he complemented you in front of the naacp, he said nice things about the dali lama, when was the last time Obama complemented McCain or right he’s too busy making radio ads calling him McSame.

Just today CNN released a poll showing that 40% of people believe McCain is attacking Barack unfairly, compared with 27% who thinks the same about Barack. Keep an eye on McCain’s unfavorable ratings, they are going up like yeast!!!

McCain is an absolute disgrace. America will rightly kick him and his “low road” political smears to the curb where they belong.

Obama constantly complements McCain. He always says that he honors McCain’s heroism and the sacrifice he made to the US as a POW. Stop making up stuff that isn’t true..

One more thing- This is VERY IMPORTANT, so please don’t delete my comment-
Folks, more drilling is NOT going to lower your prices. We have the technology and the ability to shift fuel dependencies RIGHT NOW. The answer is NOT more drilling.
We could send a man to the moon YEARS ago, and you think we can’t power the nation with alternates? USE YOUR BRAIN, the technology is there and ready- it has been squashed by big oil.
Even my parents and brothers who work in big oil, they can’t even look their kids in the face and support more drilling.
I’ll let you into the saying in my house- when your a crackhead, you’ll do whatever you have to. When the crack dries up, you’ll switch to a new drug when you have to- but otherwise- you’ll go to no end to attain your choice.
Guess what- crack (oil) is killing you, killing our kid’s future and the earth. You’re already sacrificing with oil prices- FORCE the change and watch how many new jobs are created in America that CAN’T BE OUTSOURCED.
Think folks, please- my God, we are voting against this and it is what we have made a living from.
THINK.

Actually, 40% of voters think that McCain is attacking Obama unfairly vs. 22% who think that Barack is attacking unfairly. In less than a week McCain’s Maverik glow will be in the trash can. Pay attention to his unfavorables!!!

Posted by: carl29 | July 30, 2008, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

I guess the truth is that McCain either isn’t capable of running a decent campaign or can’t control the people who are working for him. Either way, it doesn’t say much for your ability to run the country

Lets see! John McCain have NOTHING POSITIVE to say about himself or WHAT he can offer the American people to help the Economy and move this country forward . His platform on healthcare education , building infrastures i.e roads bridges etc.. is NON EXISTENT.
So the next pathetic thing ATTACK the GUY WHO DOES.

Senator Obama is a disgrace to the American political system. He was thrust down our throats by the DNC, MSM superdelegates, high-powered democrats and money launderers. His political resume is so thin one can see through it except for the legislation he stole from other senators with the help of Emil Jones. His supporters are young and uninformed about the high risks if he is elected. We do not want or need a true socialist in the White House.

I could have sworn that John McCain said earlier this year that his campaign was going to take the high road……..what has happened to change his approach? In fact, I thought that he said that the American people wanted, and deserved, better……what has happened to change his approach? Simple put: I guess that John McCain has nothing positive to say. In fact, he has NOTHING TO SAY about how he’s going to move our country forward. How sad…….McCain…….more of the same old politics as usual!

Tarred and feathered. Run out on a rail. Keel-hauled. Poked in the eye with a sharp stick. Walk the plank. Drop the soap.
These are the sayings that I find endearing when I think of McSame.
Our leaders are losers and liars. In time, they will see the truth. If we help give them a sideline seat to view from.
Pay attention – it IS different. So whatever you do, don’t vote for the same.

Mc Cain claims to support the military. Is that why he voted against the new GI Bill for educational benefits for the troops coming home? He is a grumpy old man who is still trying to please the religious right and sell out on tax breaks for the wealthy. He married his mistress and dated her while still married to his first wife. He was trying to be in his 20s while in his 40s. We can’t have 4 more years of McSame.

Posted by: Bluejay | July 30, 2008, 10:08 pm 10:08 pm

McCain sounds desperate by resoorting to gutter politics as the only means to gain traction in the polls. I think people are going to see through that. If he’s not talking about the surge he’s attacking Obama. Does he have any ideas to solve America’s economic problems? I doubt it.

Posted by: Phil | July 30, 2008, 10:10 pm 10:10 pm

When Sen. McCain and his campaign put out statements that are observably false, he undermines his credibility. Either 1) he is cynical and believes he can put something over on the citizens of this country, or 2) has a mind-set that grabs onto something and can’t reason himself out of it, even if it’s not true. These are not good qualities in a President: was he cynical in telling us we had to go to Iraq (and now thinking about Iran) or is this a manifestation of a mind-set that cannot accept a reality he doesn’t want to see.
If people can see that what he says about Sen. Obama isn’t true, how much will they believe what he says about Putin or Hugo Chavez or Raul Castro?

Now it’s the other way around the table, McCain is the one that is going to do whatever it takes to claim the presidency. Watch out people, it’s another conflict of interest. By the way, can anyone remember when McCain said he will run a moderate campaign? is he flipping or flopping? well may the next next TV ad he will be giving his supporters his version of the purple KOOL AID.

You can buy a product to rid yourself of fleas. (duh)
The idea that no one keeps company with those they do not agree with is preposterous. You LEARN from subjecting yourself to ALL WALKS OF LIFE.
Otherwise, you sound like YOU.

Once again, no one can criticize the chosen one. I recall Obama ran plenty of negative and disingenuous ads as well as disseminate disinformation through flyers and surrogates to steal the nomination from Hillary. Obama has a track record of smearing/challenging his rivals, then to turn around and play victim.
Well its too late, it may have worked during the primaries but we have seen through your bag of dirty tricks.

And now the gloves come off for both sides. About time that the Obama campaign responded with force to McCain’s sloppy attacks.
But how will the race turning negative this early impact the candidates and voter perceptions? That is the new question.

McCain claims he has better judgement and he can win wars. Last time I checked he was a POW in a lost war. So can any McCain supportesrs tell me which war he has won? Also, wasn’t it he who said that the Iraqis would greet American troops as liberators and that the American taxpayers would not have to spend a dime for the war because Iraqi oil money would pay for everything? And now we know it was all a lie!

Posted by: Phil | July 30, 2008, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm

McCain truly has the lamest campaign in recent memory. All the man talks about is the surge, the surge, the surge in Iraq. Also the calls to drill for oil everywhere is ludicrous. This will take years to develop at best
Wake up folks the oil addiction has to kicked.
McCain chastises Obama for not going to Europe and then it backfires on McCain as it is very successful.
I have not heard one iota of intelligence regarding lost jobs, new technologies for alternative energy, fiscal responsibility, or other important issues from McCain.
I thought McCain would be a good nominee but really the guy has no depth and is out of touch with current events.
McCain better ramp up some positive things about himself or it will be an ugly November at the pools.

The issues are so inportant. I work with several guys who think Obama took all his inaugurations on a Koran. They also believe when the local bar was selling t-shirts with Curious George 08′ was a compliment and a freedom of speech issue.

Posted by: Joe | July 30, 2008, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

The Republican way. It’s not God, guns and gays anymore. It’s ignorance, greed, and fear. They don’t care about America. They care about the America they want to create and if that leaves good Americans out of it so be it. Problem is McCain is even worse at this type of politics than George W. Bush and will fail miserably. What happened to the old McCain who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what he really believed? It’s time for a pragmatic leader and Obama is that. He will probably end up being more centrist than Clinton ever was. He will always put country ahead of idealogical values. Don’t be afraid of him America. Be afraid of a party that has doubled the national deficit and decided it is more important to invest in other countries while we invest less in ours. We could never do worse than what we’ve gone through for the last 8 years. Go Obama!

Mary,
Partial of your quote-
“but I don’t know that we learn from being with criminals for long term”
Aside from effect, I am not sure what your comment asks. I have a relationship with a friend who has a long history of breaking into houses. He even taught me how he did it. (on my own house, of course) Throughout the yeras, he learned that while I invited him into my house, how upset I would be if he stole it from me.
Fast forward, I have an elderly lady who lives next door. Her bi weekly nurse POUNDED on my door and asked me to help her. We could see her laying on the floor through the window. She said she was calling the police. I had that window open in about 5 seconds- without breaking anything. We saved her life, and destroyed no property.
Good people who are willing to learn how a vast majority of scorned, screwed and even bad people in this world think is not a bad thing. It is also beneficial for them to know that someone understands them.
This country is so lost with the concept of understanding anything, it is sad.

Mccain is not man enough to stand up to Obama and fight right. He fights like a low life, like an abusive hateful devil with no power. He’s the one that has been around for along time he should be beating Obama right now but He’s not. McCain is not Bush. McCain is much worse. WTB = worse than Bush.
Take a close look at the man. No rational human being can observe him with care and conclude that he has the temperament to be president.
He has no clue about economic policy. He is ignorant about the Middle East and Iraq. He knows and care nothing about women’s issues. Catch McCain’s response to the reporter who asked him about health insurance companies covering Viagra but not birth control.
McCain gives every appearance of being a man who hates war, and can’t wait to start one. Look at the people McCain now surrounds himself with. These people are destroying America. I wish this was mere exaggeration. It is not.
Anything that continues or expands Bush’s policies

Republicans have us at war in two countries as a result of Republican lies and deceptions, and we might be in two more wars–Iran and Pakistan–by November.
The dollar has lost 60% of its value against the euro, and the once mighty dollar is losing its reserve currency role.
The Republicans’ policies have driven up the price of both oil and gold by 400%.
Inflation is in double digits. Employment is falling.
The Republican economy in the 21st century has been unable to create net new jobs for Americans except for low wage domestic services such as waitresses, bartenders, retail clerks and hospital orderlies.
Republican deregulation brought about fraud in mortgage lending and dangerous financial instruments which have collapsed the housing market, leaving a million or more homeowners facing foreclosure. The financial system is in disarray and might collapse from insolvency.
The trade and budget deficits have exploded. The US trade deficit is larger than the combined trade deficits of every deficit country in the world.
The US can no longer finance its wars or its own government and relies on foreign loans to function day to day. To pay for its consumption, the US sells its existing assets–companies, real estate, toll roads, whatever it can offer–to foreigners.
Republicans have run roughshod over the US Constitution, Congress, the courts and civil liberties. Republicans have made it perfectly clear that they believe that our civil liberties make us unsafe–precisely the opposite view of our Founding Fathers. Yet, Republicans regard themselves as the Patriotic Party.
The Republicans have violated the Nuremberg prohibitions against war crimes, and they have violated the Geneva Conventions against torture and abuse of prisoners. Republican disregard for human rights ranks with that of history’s great tyrants.
The Republicans have put in place the foundation for a police state, which they have no problem using against fellow citizens!
We must get the Republicans totally out of power, or we will have no country left for any of us!

Ask the same questions Reagan raised when he ran against Carter …
Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago? If yes, then vote for McCain otherwise vote for Obama.
Republicans are for less regulation; more individual accountability; survival of the fittest. Democrats are for more regulations; more shared responsibility; socialism. It swings back and forth, perhaps this is best.
America is still the best place on earth to give opportunities. Many still want to immigrate to this country.
Vote and be a part of this great American experiment.

Who knows what McCain is for except to fear and smear Obama.
Voting against someone can only go so for. People have to have a reason to vote FOR a candidate and right now there is absolutely NO reason to vote for McCain.

It blows me away that there are so many differing opinions concerning this race. What the heck does it matter? At the level that both Obama and McCain are nothing that they say is sincere. I am convinced that politicians are all exactly the same. They will say whatever it takes to get elected. They have no conviction at all. They want power period. All that they want from us is 1. Our money and 2. our vote. Don’t kid yourself we haven’t a clue what either of these clowns have in mind. No president in years (maybe ever) has done what they promised and yet we are all so anxious to have an identity that we post with anger on sites like this, call each other names and swear that what we believe is factual. No one except the very small circle around these guys know what they really are like. Quit being so foolish as to act like you know what they’ll do. Ridiculous!

Perhaps, if Senator Obama had gone on this trip for fact finding and visiting troops instead of taking so many press, photo op people, advisers and other hanger-ons, the voters and McCain camp would see Obama in a more favorable light. He definitely made sure there was a thousand and one pics of him doing this and that. The big speech in Berlin was unnecessary. So, I can understand McCain’s campaign ads about the celebrity bit. Obama did try to show off as a celebrity. Too bad. He should have shown himself as a statesman.

Bluejay The far right hates McCain and Obama has certainly done his share of pandering to the far right. Faith based initiatives? who sounds like George W there? Showing his total lack of understanding on the abortion issue while being interviewed by the Christian magazine. Your guy has supported FISA, backed out of public financing, supports the death penalty, backed off gun control, backed off NAFTA, plans to continue George W’s war on terror and keeps the military option on the table for Iran. Sometimes I think we have two Republicans running for the Presidency. The GI bill and McCain- as is the case with either a Democrat or Republican, when they oppose a bill it isn’t a blanket statement about their committment, as in the case, to GI’s but rather is that they disagree with some specifics of the bill. McCain felt the amount and timeline that one would accrue school benefits as specified in Webb’s bill would not be conducive to troop retainment. McCain also wanted to see
those school benefits be transferable to the children of GI’s (which was not in Webb’s bill and which many GI’s would like to see happen, they can transfer those benefits right now to their spouse but not their children) and he also wanted to see more assistance in regards to past student loans. We need to keep drawing our conclusions just based on headlines and look at the details before we can make blanket statements like McCain doesn’t want to help the troops in regards to school benefits. And the same applies for the Democrats when they are labeled such inappropriately. One could also ask why the Dems sat on this bill for the past couple years and yet opted to pull it out right now and address it.
It’s all a political game and we need to take it for what it is.

Paris Hilton has a clothing, shoe and perfume line of goods that are sold in exclusive stores around the world. Perhaps both candidate could learn something from Ms Hilton’s business skills. One report was her line is now worth about $50 million.
However, instead of Senator Obama looking like a celebrity while campaigning, he should look like a well-informed statesman. He does not, unfortunately. Obama is lacking in both domestic and foreign government policies and he keeps changing his position.

An experienced politician does not act like McCain. A man with integrity does not play “low road” smearing attack. I dont know what kind of experience and integrity that he claims he has over Obama’s ? His campaign looks more like that of Clinton during the primary. All they can put out are smearing attacks.

Sen Obama said it best: “if somebody doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, that means they’ve got some problems of their own.”
McCain is so out of touch. I wish I can get into the boxing ring with him and knock him silly a few times.

Well Obama would know a lot about the low road. He is the most corrupt politician in Washington. Look at all of the shady characters who are part of his core. His campaign has been really frightening behind the scenes.
Obama is trying to get new voters…well many of those voters are homeless.
Will someone in the press please show Obama for the corrupt politician that he is!

I’ve got to wonder how much Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got paid for appearing in John McCains Tv commercial?

John25 WROTE: “Obama is trying to get new voters…well many of those voters are homeless”
There are at least 4 amendments to the Constitution which guarantees the Right to Vote. Which one denies that right to homeless people?

McCain is down to his last option. Its awful early to be so desperate, but that’s where McCain finds himself.
Despite promises to the contrary, he’s going all negative, all the time.
It could work. I hope not. I think the American people deserve better.

McCain is trying to portray an image of Obama….Unfortunately, it also portrays an image of himself and the Republican party…That is, a crotchery old man, resistant to change, and devoid any new ideas. A return to the past or maintaining status quo while throwing darts at those who embrace change is all they have…A tired old man with tired old ideas….a great symbol for what the Republican party has become..

Where did the country go that I was raised to believe in. A country that was responsible for the American Dream? All I see now is corporate bullies, and persuaded politicians, while the people suffer.
Can I get an AMEN?
:)
51,000 Jobs lost LAST Month up to 436,000 This year. Yet EXXONMobile records Billions in profits.
Where is the sense in that?

McCain is the true American?
He is resorting to vicious tactics, because he is losing.
What could be more American than that?
