Obama Slams Hoop Dreams for High School Diplomas
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama took a "tough love" message to African American youth, telling that finishing high school is a better route to success in life than an unlikely trip to the NBA or the top of the rap industry.
"You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Lil’ Wayne, but probably not, in which case you need to stay in school," Obama, D-Ill., told a cheering crowd, brought to a standing ovation at a town hall meeting in Powder Springs, Georgia.
The presumptive Democratic nominee was speaking about high school drop out rates and the need for people to be committed to working hard in school so they can get a job after school.
Obama said he knows some young men think they can’t find a job unless they are a really good basketball player.
"Which most of you brothas are not," Obama, who played basketball in high school, a sport he continues to play to this day, said jokingly. "I know you think you are, but you’re not. You are over-rated in your own mind. You will not play in the NBA."
Obama, who will be the first African American presidential nominee of a major party when he accepts the Democratic nomination on August 28, 2008, in Denver, spoke to a predominantly black audience at the Georgia event.
The candidate regularly voices a "tough love" message in front of all groups –- telling parents to turn off the video games, get off the sofa, and if their child is in trouble in school to "not cuss out the teacher."
The town hall marks Obama’s first visit to Georgia — a state not won by a Democratic presidential candidate since then-Gov. Bill Clinton’s win in 1992 — in the general election campaign. Speculation has also surrounded former Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., a potential Obama vice presidential pick that could help put the Peach State in play.
Obama’s visit is part of the campaign’s week-long effort to campaign in so-called "red states" that have favored Republicans in recent elections and, presumably, also lean toward his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
The Democratic contender’s red state swing heads to Virginia — home to, among others, Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., who took himself out of the running mate stakes — and Ohio — which played a critical role in President George W. Bush’s 2004 victory over Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., later this week.

Finally a president who can call it as he see it .
It will be nice if he brings that community type attitude to the presidency. We all can take whatever message and do our part.

Obama is absolutely correct in “telling it like it is” to black American youth. I am sure this is much to the chagrin of most racists who would rather see all black youth in prison. But maybe he can get through to some of those “at risk” youth, and help the situation for them and consequently, help all America.

Obama dashed their dreams and still gets kudos from his followers. Amazing to see what a hypocrit he is?!!? This is how his exposure to 20 years with Rev Wright’s influence now permeates his entire life outlook. What if someone continued to tell him he was no good, and would probably not ever be good enough. He had the same problem of poor grades all through his public school. He should have encouraged them to continue to pursue their dreams to achieve all that is possible. The message should be that school and getting an education is the path to success whatever your career choice ultimately is. Perhaps his speechwriters were on holiday when he wrote this speech. Is this the kind of treatment, his followers should expect – let’s hope not.
Posted by: Chaz | July 8, 2008, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm
Obama wasn’t suggesting kids not play sports, but he was asking them to be realistic about getting a chance to play in the NBA, or become a rap artist, or some other unrealistic goal. An education is the only sure thing that can get these kids a ticket out of poverty and crime. Surely that is what he was trying to impress upon them. But you can read it any way you wish to demean what he was saying. By the way, it seems it is okay with you conservatives to spend billions of dollars a week on War, but for social programs, forget it. By the way, I wonder if our government was spending $12Billion a month on social and welfare programs to feed the poor and house the homeless and fix our infrastructure and insure the millions of people without health insurance if there would be rioting in the streets – but spend it on a useless War and not a word of protest from you neocons.

Senator Obama’s position on the war has not changed. The media is doing a good job of making us believe that it has changed because the media is pro McCain.
The Republicans have given us a trillion dollars debt and gasoline prices that effect our standard of living. How can anyone vote for more of the same!

Real Deal, as a longtime Democrat, I will surely support a Republican like McCain (thatI do not like) over a Democrat that talks the talk but does not walk the walk. We will never have Democratic nominee that stands for something as long as continue to reward them for kissing up to the republican right.
Yes, Obama has changed his position on the withdrawal. Several times. Currently he is back to where he started. He wants to give more money to religious organizations. He voted to give immunity to companies that illegally spied on US citizens.
Obama cannot be trusted.

Catleya, Senator Obama cares about all children. Don’t forget he has just as much white blood as he does black blood running through his veins. His mother,
who instilled his values, was white.
The high school graduation rate among AAs is astonishingly low. Someone needs to address this. This dismal rate of graduation among AA males affects all of us. I commend Senator Obama for addressing it.

I like how Obama stresses the importance of getting a high school degree and seeking higher education so that one can earn an above average salary, while his socialistic policies punish any entrepreneur who so dares to rise above being a “working-class” citizen……
Personally I don’t want someone running this country who thinks its fair to punish those who worked their butt off earn have an above average standard of living…..
It would be great if everyone were on equal financial playing fields, but that’s not the way it is and taking from the rich and giving to the poor will do nothing but destroy any sense of economical growth this country is trying to achieve.

How can someone running for the President of the United States use such racial stereotypes while addressing the youth of America. Is it actually true that most African American young men want to be basketball players and rappers? I thought that was a racial stereotype? So it’s only true depending on who says it? If I was a mother of a son in that audience I would be outraged. Does he refer to all male children as “brothers”? Regardless of their race. I am undecided about who I will vote for. But this makes me very nervous about voting for someone as racist as he appears to be in this speech.

rogerSM234, what do you know about Senator Obama’s church. The news media shows a few snippets over a 30 year period and uninformed people are in a uproar. Are you familiar with culture of black churches. Oftentimes, the social gospel is preached. My pastor is a great man whom I respect. However, I do not agree with everything that he utters.
Does McCain go to church? Has he ever been baptized? Research that!

Undecided, please tell me what is racist about relating to a group of misguided youth. These kids need real leadership and role models. Think about it -if they are not educated and do not go to work what will they do. How will their uneducated circumstance affect you? And it will affect you. Obama was trying to give these kids hope through tough love.

Up123, All you have to do is read the churh’s past bulletins and you will see that they consistently contain the same type of racist and anti-American verbage that is contained in Rev. Wright’s “snippets” which proves that Obama must have been aware of where his Pastor was comming from and now is trying to say he knew nothing about it.

From wake up America:
http://mpinkeyes.wordpress.com/2008/05/09/barack-obamas-church-bulletins-contain-controvercial-content/
By now everybody has heard the infamous “sermons” from Barack Obama’s spiritual mentor and pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Barack Obama stood by his pastor when the video clips first hit the airwaves, but as the controversy grew and Reverend Wright became a serious detriment to the Obama campaign Obama was forced to denounce his former reverend.
Obama has maintained that he had never, ever heard Wright make such statements in the TWENTY YEARS he attended Wright’s church. Apparently we are to believe that the only time Reverend Wright made controversial statements was coincidentally times where Barack Obama just happened to miss church. It wasn’t until Reverend Wright decided that he liked his new found fifteen minutes of fame and decided to turn it into an hour that Obama found it politically exponential to denounce Wright’s statements as divisive and destructive. He claims that the man he heard utter those words during his magical mystery media tour was not the same man that he had grown to know over the years.
However, we are now beginning to hear about church bulletins from Obama’s church that also preach the same type of hate as late as last year. I suppose we are to believe Obama just happened to not read these bulletins either.
Articles published in the Trinity United Church of Christ bulletin in 2007 carried controversial comments written by people other than Jeremiah Wright. Those comments included the claim that Israel worked with South Africa to build an “ethnic bomb” that would kill blacks and Arabs, that the Pentagon was training Latin Americans to be terrorists, and that the TV networks are run by right-wing racists.
This is the type of hate that Barack Obama and his wife took his young girls to listen to on a weekly basis. How is that for judgement from the man who is running on his judgement because he claims he would not have voted for war with Iraq? This shows a lack of judgement to me.
When interviewed about his denouncement of Reverend Wright, Obama claimed that he wasn’t committing to Wright by joining the church, rather the church itself.
“I think that the American people understand that when I joined Trinity United Church of Christ, I was committing not to Pastor Wright. I was committing to a church and I was committing to Christ. And it is a wonderful church.”
Now it appears as if the church itself harbors the same hateful and anti-American ideology as Reverend Wright. It will be interesting to see now Barack Obama tries to distance himself from this, if he does at all, however Obama’s campaign refused to comment on these new revelations (pardon the pun.)
You can read more in this article.

And Terry, you agree with everything that is in your church’s bulletin.
What do the bullentins say? I have friends who are members of the United Church of Christ. Quite frankly, they are some of the kindest, God fearing, and compassionate people I know.
Leaving a church is a major decision.

Real Deal,
Obama has changed his position on Iraq because even he knows that it would be just plain stupid to pull defeat out of the jaws of victory now that the US is winning the war in Iraq. As to high gas and food prices, Obama is on the record for being against drilling for more oil, building new refineries and nuclear power plants. In fact Obama has stated that he is just fine with the high price of gas. One of Obama’s main campaign contributers is the biofuel industry and of course the global warming fear mongers that would like us all to go back to the dark ages. So if you want no or negative growth, a lower standard of living, high gas prices and food prices, I guess Obama is your guy.

Real Deal,
If my church bulletin contained racist, anti-American and anti-semitic sentiments I would immediatly leave the church. By the way, would you be making excuses for McCain if McCain had belonged to a church for twenty years whose pastor preached anti-black sermons and whose bulletins contained a lot of racists sentiments against blacks. I think not
Posted by: Terry | July 8, 2008, 5:37 pm 5:37 pm
Mary, you are right Obama is my guy. But please do not distort the facts, Obama’s POSITION ON THE WAR HAS NOT CHANGED. HIS MISSION IS TO END THE WAR! And the ultimate timetable will be dictated by the commanders on the ground. This is NOT a change.
Off-shore oil drilling will NOT bring any oil for another 7 to 10 years and it will ruin our beaches. Besides the US cannot drill enough oil off the coasts to lower cost. The Chinese hold the “mighty” dollar.
Now, Mary, if you like the present economic conditions, McSame is your guy.
Can you fill up your tank?
Can you pay your mortgage?
Can you send your kids to college?
Can you pay all of your bills?

Real deal,
I don’t believe Obama is demonstrating “tough love”.McCain or Hilary Clinton would never in a million years use this type of “tough love” on this same audience. The leader of our country should not change the truth he speaks according to the audience he is speaking to. It is racist to assume that the young men in the audience want to be basketball players and rappers simply because they are African American. It is racist to call them “brothers” unless he use the term “brothers” when is he talking to all young men, regardless of their race. He can encourage them without using racist stereotypes.
Posted by: undecided | July 8, 2008, 6:03 pm 6:03 pm
It is amazing for me the comments. Everyone speaking negative about Obama obviously have not lived in the USA the last 8 years. I work for the largest Defense Contractor in the World as an engineer and let me tell you folks. Most of the people I work with don’t won’t 4 or 8 more years of Bush Politics and Republican irresponsibility. I am traditionally a republican but I am not stupid. Look at the corruption of the Bush Administration and how they have controlled their agenda. You want more of that? Granted Democrats are not perfect but we absolutely need to send a message to the Republican Party and change the agenda. The US Government is always.. let me be clear ALWAYS going to be BIG, LARGE, etc. The biggest difference between the Republicans and the Democrats is this. The Rupublicans have made this the United States of Corporate American and the Democrats want to put it back to where it is the United States of AMERICANS. It is the government’s role to provide a stable economy and allow the economy to run in such a way as to afford everyone equal opportunities. Corporations have such influence in Government that it is not possible without big government changes. The government has to take control of health care and such or the Corporations will continue to run the economy and the american way of life into the ground. You talk about taxes and defend the Republican Party and the Bush Administration. You must be insane. It is a proven fact that TRADITIONALLY REPUBLICANS RAISE TAXES ON THE MIDDLE CLASS AND SCREW THE MIDDLE CLASS AND CATER TO THE RICH AND TRADITIONALLY DEMOCRATES TAKE MONEY FROM THE RICH CORPORATIONS BY TAXING THEM APPROPRIATELY AND NOT THE MIDDLE CLASS. Only a moron does not know that. If you look at this country and its state you should realize this is serious. If we do not do something about global warming there is not going to be any gas, oil or anything else. The Republican party wants to scare the people into believing that drilling oil is the answer and the way out of our problems and that is complete bull crap. Any logical person knows that if the government proves is taking serious to go alternative that alone will send a message to the oil maching to reduce their prices of oil. If we cater to drilling more that will just make the oil machine keep prices higher because they know it will take 10 years for it to affect supply. Changing course completely to alternative will send them a message that their days of supplying oil to us is going to end soon. THINK ABOUT IT
Posted by: Steve | July 8, 2008, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm
Real Deal,
Oil engineers, that is the experts, are saying that they can get oil out of the ground in as little as two years, not ten as Obama is telling you. Once the speculators know the US is serious about drilling for new oil they will start selling short and the prices will start to come down. Again, Obama is against this because he has told us that he is just fine with the high price of gas. So it is not surprising he could care less about doing what he can to lower prices by drilling for more oil and is trying to pull the wool over your eyes by telling you it will take 10 years to get the oil when all the experts are saying it will take as little as two years.
As to all of the issues you have noted, I could better pay for all of the above if my taxes were lower. Obama wants to raise taxes accross the board so Obama will make my life much worse, not better and make it harder for me to pay for all of my expenses, if not impossible. Fact is if Obama gets elected and recinds President Bush’s tax cuts the taxes for and average familiy of four earning $50,000 will go up by $2500. When you add in higher payroll, taxes, corporate taxes, dividend taxes and income taxes, etc as Obama is proposing, that will mean higher tasxes for all and just not those earning $250, 000. For example, if I sell my home, the taxes on any profit I make will go higher. The taxes on my dividends will also go up and when my employers taxes go up, they might just lower my number of hours, thus my pay, or just plain lay me off. Not a pretty picture but that is what Obama has in store for us if he gets elected. If that is what you want, than, wow take a breath and think about it a little more and maybe you will come to your senses, I hope.
As to Iraq, Obama has flipped flopped so many times on Iraq that I know it is hard to tell where he stands at any given moment. But as to here and now, Obama has changed his position and will keep troops in Iraq as he knows that pulling them out now in the face of a victory is just plain stupid and would turn Iraq over to Iran and Al Qaeda and with the oil fields now in production, with the help of the US, it would be doubly stupid to withdraw now and Obama knows it. If you are correct and Obama will go ahead and withdraw from Iraq as he has said he would, than I really question not only his judgement, but his sanity.

so the candidate of hope and change tells kids not to hope for their dream, and that they are not good at what they love and that will not change??
what’s really amusing about all of this is that when bill cosby talks to black youth across the country telling them to be more family oriented, to stay in school, get away from gangs, et cetera, the black community calls him an ‘uncle tom’ and calls him out of touch.
now the obamassiah says many of the same things and the drive-by’s are crooning over him and he’s got the black vote locked up??

Steve, Hello, the government is not for the people, where have you been if you think that? the old Soviet Union perhaps? The government is composed of a bunch of faceless, self serving burecrats who get their money by force of law from the hard working people, and than sit on their high horse telling everyone how to live their lives. Just remember Obama has already told us in plain english that
“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.
“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.
As to corporate America being so bad, who built the home you live in, who grew the food you eat, who built the cars you drive, who made the clothes you wear who manufactured all the electronic toys you have, your flat screen tvs, your cell phones, you ipods, who manufactured the drugs that you count on to keep you healthy or save your life???? I can assure you it was not anyone in the government that has built or manufactured anything of value, All the government does is take take take and spend the money on a lot of useless government programs or earmarks for their favored program, like the bridge to nowhere in Alaska or the underground transit system in Boston.
If you want a lot of useless government programs, corrupt politicians who direct the tax payers money to people like Rezco and want some government worker running your life, than I guess Obama is your guy.

The nice thing is that Obama can talk like this to African American youth with the voice of experience, as a living example of what hard work can accomplish. Is it because as long as there are African Americans with high incarceration and low literacy rates, your feet will never touch the bottom? You need someone to be worse off than yourself so that you can feel smug in your position?
Why are you objecting to him saying the very things you would say if anyone cared to listen to you?

Mary, you have distorted another Obama position. Senator Obama will not raises taxes, but he will rescind the tax cuts for the wealthly. So if you make more than $250,000 your taxes will go up and they SHOULD. However, under President Obama I will be able to send my children to college and pay my bills. And NO more dead soldiers from Iraq. See I am one of the ordinary folks-middle class.
Obama could relate to these kids today in a way McCain never could. And Senator Obama did not alter the truth. The kids are now energized. Why does that disturb you?? Your position on this is uncomprehensible. Fortunately, Obama has two lens – a white and a black one. He sees both sides. Funnel vision can be detrimental.

real deal – i’d love to answer the questions you ask. i am not a person with a high income, i am just an honest hard working american who does not think obama is the messiah. so here’s your answers:
Can you fill up your tank? – absolutely, for years i have owned a car that gets 30mpg because it has been within my budget.
Can you pay your mortgage? – don’t have a mortgage – i rent. however, when anyone and everyone was out buying homes on adjustable rate mortgages, i was smart enough to know that there is a proper time in life to buy a house, and a responsible way to handle finances.
Can you send your kids to college? – mine are 13 and 10 – and i don’t know right now if i will be able to finance their entire tuition, should they choose to pursue higher education. honestly, i hope they understand the value of hard work all through their high school years and are able to get scolarships, and with some grants and / or student loans, they should be able to get a 2year at a community college, then evaluate further.
Can you pay all of your bills? every month, without fail. i have lived my life in a fiscally responsible way, budgeting at 80% of my income, so that i am able to save for the future and have an emergency fund.
Can you take a vacation? yes – 1 week a year, something reasonable – no trips to paris.
How is the ozone? – the ozone is great – we here in phoenix do emission testing, and sure we have some smog, but it’s nothing like india or china produce.
How is crime in your city? – that’s a good one – i live in a sanctuary city, the kind liberals love (see san fran) and the crime here is ridiculous. the liberal police chief will not work with ice and mandated by federal law, and sherrif arapio is doing anything he can to help the situation, but unfortunately he doesn’t have the manpower. if we had a conservative mayor and governor who would push the police chief to do his job we might not have the crime issues here as we do.
Do you know anyone who has been killed in this senseless war? – no i don’t, but i do not believe this is a sensless war, thanks for asking! you have a right to your opinion, of course, but let me ask you this – why have we not been attacked on our homeland since 9/11? in fact, we have not even had any of our embassies attacked!
oh yes – the price of oil dropped $8 / barrel today on speculation that supply would increase. imagine if supply were to increase for sure due to americans providing 50% more of the oil we consume??
i used to be a liberal, then i learned to think for myself…

real deal – i have a friend who’s in her 30′s, she met mccain when she was in her early teens. she said he was the nicest man, given that he was such a busy person being a politician and all. he took the time to ask her and her friends about their lives (remember, these are 12-13 year old girls, not voting age). she typically has liberal points of view, but she remembers her experience with mccain and sees the ‘empty suit’ that obama is and will not vote for obama.
also – obama will indeed tax everyone more – as soon as he repeals the bush tax cuts, we all receive a $2000 tax increase! furthermore, he will double the capital gains tax and raise raise the fica tax on the wealthiest americans – those like my boss, who uses the income he has to re-invest in his business, creating more jobs and more possibilities for growth within his company. as his taxes go up, he will have to stop re-investing, and possibly cut jobs in order to keep the business finances in check. that means my co-workers or myself are out of a job. also, as he raises minimum wage, a burger at mcdonalds will go up in price, because some 16 year old needs to make $12/hr.??
so if you think he’s not raising your taxes and cost of living – guess again. do some research on what the late ’70′s were like financially for america as we had jimmy carter as president, because obama’s on exactly the same agenda…

yes, mack – in the case of real deal it will… but there are others out there who need to hear the truth, right? thank goodness i figured it out, now it is my mission to help others see self reliance and responsibility ‘vs’ government dependence.

Obama has all these tax cuts he is going to give the middle class & poor. And wants to send more checks. I Like money & tax cuts, but is it really going to help bring jobs? Tax cuts do no good if you don’t have a job & can’t pay taxes. And where will the money come from for another stimulis check ? We’ll have to claim it all next year on our income taxes & pay higher taxes. Way to go Obama America is in debt enough, America needs good paying jobs, not welfare, that we will pay for anyway.

Why are all you Obamatoids reacting as if the Messian had suddenly revealed the secret of eternal life? Bill Cosby has been conveying the importance of personal responsibility and education for decades. Black preachers have been conveying it since before Bill Cosby was born. And most black parents have been passing it down for generations (see Clarence Thomas’ autobiography).
So what’s new? I guess that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Obama’s preacher and Obama’s wife can’t complain that it’s all useless because of “Whitey’s oppression”, because it is Obama saying it. Must be great to be a Messiah to so many gullible followers.

Just a thinker, I do not have to research the Carter years. I lived the through those years. I also have lived through the last 8 years. And I am worse off than I was 8 years ago. Everything is in disarray! You need to educate yourself on Obama’s tax plan. Remember the Clinton years when we had economic prosperity. Those years are coming again.

There are more African American surgeons than there are African American NBA stars yet black kids often remain starry eyed about their chances in the NBA.
Obama is spot-on about expanding people’s dreams.

Shalom…Buddy… I am allowed to have my opinions and as far as I am concerned that was an unnecessary put down to Black Americans….Obama could have said the same thing in a more positive light and it would have been much more effective.

McCain. Got into Naval Academy cuz of his dad. Got all his money after he dumped his wife and married a multimillionaire honey. Has a bunch of second homes that he forgot to pay taxes on. Got in a huge savings-and-loan scandal. Says he doesn’t like to bring up his POW days, then brings it up constantly.
He was tough under torture, let’s give him that. But now he advocates torture.
Was tough on campaign finance reform, and now breaks the rules he wrote.
Was tough on Bush in 2000. Now he wants to keep all the same policies.
But I guess Obama’s the one who can’t be trusted, and the one who’s stupid, and the one who can’t relate to the common man.

I like Obama and will probably vote for him. I’m not sure yet. However, I think he is somewhat out of touch with reality in understanding why so many minorities, especially black male minorities, are more likely to drop out of school. That miseducation of the negro child still goes on into today’s society. It begins in elementary school. If the kids aren’t being taught in elementary school, they’re lost in middle and high school. Also, black males are more likely to be harshly punished, suspended and/or expelled from school for minor infractions than their white fellow brothers are. So, Obama needs to look at the whole picture. There are also teachers who should never be allowed to teach in the school system. They don’t help to shape and mold developing minds, they destroy them!

Mr Obama is not making any points in regards to education that Bill Cosby has not been trying to make for at least the last two years, He was severly critizes by AA’s and AA professionals. Many said such awful things about him. As an AA I was apalled at how we responded to his “truth”

It’s been about 10 years since I’ve taken an class on American politics, but correct me if I’m wrong, the President does not make all the decisions or all the changes. He has to work with both the Congress and the Senate before any changes are made. I think we all need to remember that and take a step back from bashing our candidates. Yes they both have some very strong ideas about taxes, but nothing will be changed unless the majority of both the Congress and the Senate agree. I think we all tend to lose sight of that when listen to the candidates speak. We take what they say and assume that they are going to be the ones to make the sole decisions. Yes they will help guide changes, but they are not final word on what happens with our country. I am personally undecided at this point on whom I am going to vote for.

The same people complaining about Obama’s comments are the same people who cross the street to avoid these very same kids. The reality is that many black kids think that their path to success is professional sports or rap music and only a small percentage will be successful. The road to success is through education, if you happen to make it to the NBA, good for you. If you make it as a successful rapper, good for you. However, if you want to learn how to take of yourselves and your money, a college education may give you the tools to learn. Michelle and Barack Obama are excellent proof that staying in school is the path to success. Go Obama!

Wow, Mary! Quite a ball of nonsense you’ve woven. Sorry if that seems condescending. But you’re barking up a whole forest of wrong trees.
In simple refutation of your culture-hating, anti-identity love letter to corporate wage slavery: the Internet.
It lets us articulate our ideas and be given the gift of learning — including having people show us how wrong we are when we are, in fact, quite wrong — because it is a public space. The Internet is a public space that gives no corporation an advantage over an individual citizen and lets us all teach each other what we know instead of having a one-track media push us all around. It’s the perfect free market, one that harnesses the power of humans, one where you’re free to be wrong and I’m free to clue you in. Or, you know, the other way around.
And in response to your description of the government as a bureaucratic collection of evil-intending leeches, good for nothing and no one: the Internet. (And, Republicans.) The Internet is also a product of government research. It wouldn’t have been created without the government’s involvement and its ability to bring the underlying technology to market — through research, development, and an interest in the collective benefit (and security — wiki DARPANET) of all Americans.
Thanks, government, for giving us the chance to choose good leadership. When good people get near your levers you are a wonderful mechanism. I’m looking forward to 8 years of healing the distrust folks like Mary have for you, so we can get down to saving our asses.

For a better dialogue I encourage anyone who doesn’t already know to check out independent blogs — talkingpointsmemo, dailykos, openleft, political cortex. Now that we’re here on the Internet, we get to build our own playgrounds.

Anyone who thinks Obama is going to cut taxes is not living in the real world. He may say that he is, but take a look at what he has proposed so far and how many billions of dollars he says it will cost. Do you have a money tree growing in your back yard? No, and neither does he. Politicians promise a lot that never happens when they get in office. And for anyone that thinks a tax cut is going to pay their mortgage, send their kids to college, allow them to go on vacation, pay all of their bills, fix the ozone, and cut crime in their area is not thinking straight either. You may get enough to fill up the tank. Obama supporters throw the cut taxes thing around like it is going to save people thousands of dollars. And anyone making 250,000 per year, which is what I earn in about ten years of working full time, SHOULD be paying taxes. If it’s a hardship, let them sell the Mercedes. And when Chicago, where Obama lives, has one of the worst violent crime rates in the country, don’t throw him up as an answer to crime in this country. As a state senator, he did not change a thing in one city. He’s not going to accomplish anything in this country. Wake up.

hpg – the only negativity I see is coming from you. Why is it that when a guy like Bill Cosby delivers the same message – stay in school, don’t be seduced by false dreams of fame – conservatives stand up and applaud. But when Obama says the exact same thing you angry headcases go insane with rage and hatred? You Obama-haters are completely derranged. You losers need to get lives.

This should be the message to all children regardless of race. The funny thing here reading these blogs is it’s o.k. for Obama to say these things and not McCain. he would be labeled a racist. This is another liberal media outlet showing their true liberal colors with the elevation of Obama on a topic that is common sense–EDUCATION.

I can hardly believe that so many don’t see the racism in his comments in our ultra super sensitive politically correct society! It doesn’t matter WHAT color the speaker is. Stereotyping an audience of young black man as all wanting to be basketball players and rappers is RACIST. As a white person I am offended by that. If I ever said such a thing or heard anyone I know say such a thing I would be outraged. In the middle class where I live people in America no longer talk that way. It’s RACIST.

The is a difference between talking to people, and talking at people. From the way Bush gives speeches, lol, I am speechless. Obama hits on the real issues, the one’s of which the foundation of this country rests upon. Sure we got all that smoke-screen oil and whatever jargon being blasted from all media orfices, it’s intended purpose to cause confusion and disarray, when all along they know which cards they will play next unbeknowest to the poor misinformed american public. God have mercy on those who eat that stuff up without examining the ingredients first; just because it tastes good doesn’t mean it’s good for you. It takes common sense to know that our foundations have been succumbing from groundwork being done secretly beneath our feet for a few years now.
McCain = sinkhole opens
Obama = we’ll see
All you conservatives, lol, just keep spewing that media fizz, like a bunch of shook up sodas. It’s not your fault you can’t contain yourselves, but it’s your lap it will fall upon.

McCain Wears Depends,(you may want to pick a better name, it doesn’t give you much credibility :))
I don’t know who I’m voting for yet. I always wait until I have 2 candidates to pick from and then I start educating myself and make my decision. I’m not excited about either one at this point. I have a feeling that once Obama actually goes to Iraq and educates himself he will come to the same conclusion that everyone else has. We can’t just bolt at this point. I do agree with Obama on some national issues, but I am concerned about his international experience.
You can’t compare what he said to quoting statistics on crime in any given area. He was assuming that he knew the dreams and aspirations of the “brothers” in that particular audience. How did he know? You seem to be suggesting that what Obama said was true. It’s true that all those young black men want to be basketball players and rappers? Not one of them wants to be a pilot or a lawyer or a highway maintenance worker or a banker or start their own business? Is that the truth? Or is it an assumption based on a stereotype.

Obama is a breath of fresh air in politics. He has the moral fortitude to stand up for what is right for the kids. Jesse Jackson and his generation have mostly tried to make victims out of them. I hope Obama wins by a landslide, and if the enough voters can see through the lies of the Rovesque Republican spin machine, he will.

I agree with Obama’s message to black youth and as a white woman in the suburbs I would have to extend it to many white children, too. Parents push their kids into sports chasing a scholarship while failing to recognize many of them aren’t focusing on academics. And some of the coaches are brutal, insisting the kids play when they are sick or injured. For instance, multiple concussions can affect your I.Q. permanently but many coaches ignore this. My sons in high school were dismayed by classmates playing football and obviously getting dumber after repeated concussions. This national obsession with sports fuels this problem. Our schools should be stressing academics and fitness, but not sports.
Posted by: Lydia | July 10, 2008, 2:28 am 2:28 am
I don’t trust Obama, but I think he spoke truthfully to those kids and on their level, in the plainest English they can understand. However, I wish he had also told them to keep their ridiculous looking pants pulled up!
Get over yourselves and stop being pretentious. As for change for the greater good, a politician is a crook and a liar by nature. Wake up.
Posted by: RS708 | July 10, 2008, 1:59 pm 1:59 pm
I applaud the senator’s efforts to get kids to face reality, but doubt seriously it will mean anything. This culture discarded moral compasses long ago and invested in the get-rich-quick mindset. If people can’t make it as a celebrity or sports pro to make it to the top, they’ll turn to pimping, dealing drugs, stealing IDs, scamming the ignorant, or anything else that doesn’t require an education. It’s so much easier than staying in school and studying for a possible job in a dying economy.
