Obama the Empathetic
Once you get past the controversial cover, this week’s New Yorker has a Ryan Lizza look at Sen. Barack Obama’s rise, which includes this nugget, a post-9/11 op-ed Obama wrote in the Hyde Park Herald:
"Even as I hope for some measure of peace and comfort to the bereaved families," Obama wrote, "I must also hope that we as a nation draw some measure of wisdom from this tragedy. Certain immediate lessons are clear, and we must act upon those lessons decisively. We need to step up security at our airports. We must reexamine the effectiveness of our intelligence networks. And we must be resolute in identifying the perpetrators of these heinous acts and dismantling their organizations of destruction.
"We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.
"We will have to make sure, despite our rage, that any U.S. military action takes into account the lives of innocent civilians abroad. We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe—children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and within our own shores."
Interesting.
The Hyde Park Herald published a special Obama issue in February 2007 that includes some other nuggets.
Michelle Obama, for instance, says that "What makes me unique is not only that I come from the community, but I have this Ivy League degree that makes me credible on the other side." And while she praises her husband to high heaven, she also notes that "The thing about Barack is that he is not Mr. Door Opener. I don’t think he knows those rules. But he is very romantic."
State Sen. Kwame Raoul, who replaced Obama in the state legislature, says that Obama’s advice to him was very simple: "Stay out of jail"
Rev. Jeremiah Wright writes about how he and Obama are (were?) "kindred spirits."

Maybe we need to also try to understand the stupidity of some of the people who write on this site.

Obama doesn’t seem to be able to attract supporters who demand substance over style. Wonder why some people prefer style over substance?–Aston
—————
Are you serious? His policies are far more detailed than those of John McCain. He does have style, but he also has plenty of substance. He is able to answer specific questions with great detail. John McCain has little substance to many of his policies (which apppear to keep changing anyway), he appears to become confused on a regular basis when he needs to cite anything in specific terms, and he regularly needs to tell reporters that he “will get back to them,” presumably so that he can check with his staff about what he should say, including what his position is on a policy.
To the earlier poster who asks if Obama is an American Citizen, well, what do you think? He was born in Hawaii to a U.S. citizen and a non-U.S. citizen. Yes, that makes him a U.S. citizen. I was also born to a U.S. citizen and a non-U.S. citizen (who later became naturalized) in a U.S. state (though not Hawaii). John McCain was born in the Panama Canal zone. I still think he should be eligible to run for the presidency, but I wonder why you aren’t asking the same question about John McCain.

Does not sound presidential to me – a president, or a wanna-be president, has to be tough and not let his / her enemies see their softer side or their ideology.
Obama should consider being a psychiatrist, a speech writer, a preacher or a human-rights activist, but certainly not a president. Those words are great – in theory – and I certainly empathise with them. A president, unfortunate or not, has to think with his / her head, not heart. Otherwise he / she can’t make a decision based on hard cold facts but will be conflicted. I am against most wars, but you don’t want a president whose mantra could be interpreted as being against all wars since it could embolden other despots. Sometimes a tough stance will prevent a war.

Comaparing the real issues the Reps don’t stand a chance. I understand Satire however given the fact that a large majority of the American people actually believes these falsehoods, The cover is definetly tasteless and at the very least it will be used by the Reps in it’s smear campaign. As evidenced by the use of this cover on the net & cable to smear Sen Obama. The editors missed the boat on this.

And that is pertinent in what way?
Posted by: Soetoro No! | July 14, 2008, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm
Linda n carolina, you wrote: “I would think Obama’s idea of getting to the root of terrorism would be welcome.”
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to get to the root of terrorism. It’s the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Palestinian leadership has intentionally kept their own people oppressed for 60 years so that they can continue to blame Israel for their plight. And it has worked. The various Palestinian terrorist organizations, who vow to destroy Israel, have used intimidation and extortion to sabotage every effort to solve the conflict. But the real crux of the problem is that for 60 years every Palestinian, and the vast majority of the Middle Eastern Muslims, have been thoroughly indoctrinated with the message of hatred towards, and destruction of, Israel and the Civilized World in their school curricula.
The solution is three-fold: (1) The spread of democracy throughout the Middle East. Hopefully Iraq and Afghanistan will one day become thriving democracies with healthy economies and role models for their neighbors. And then hopefully the citizens of these neighboring countries will demand that their countries become democracies; (2) The creation of a democratic state of Palestine. Hopefully one day both Israel and Palestine will live side by side as thriving democracies with vibrant economies; (3) And probably the most difficult part of the solution is the banning of the school curricula which teaches hatred and the destruction of Israel and Western Civilization. And even after such a ban, it will take at least two generations to change the Palestinian and Muslim mindset that is determined to destroy Israel and Western Civilization.
So as long as the Palestinians continue to live in such poverty (leadership imposed poverty) and blame Israel for their struggles, they will continue to call for the destruction of Israel and commit terrorist attacks against Israel, and any supporters of Israel.

Bhrandon, and the Left’s mantra continues: “Yes we can — dream!”
Sen. McCain is NOT a very good candidate. He stumbles over his words and as such is not a very good communicator. Sen. Obama “appears” to be the perfect candidate: very intelligent, extrememly articulate, charismatic and very attractive. YET, the latest polls have these two within the margin of error — basically tied. One would expect that Sen. Obama would have a 25-point lead on Sen. McCain. My guess is more and more people are seeing through the rhetoric (and the charm) and realize we don’t need the “mother-of-all” tax and spend Democrats running the White House.

Obama would rather face a firing squad than a town hall debate, and McCain would rather be back in Viet Nam than have to get questions about economics. Both are weak ineffectual candidates, otherwise they wouldn’t CARE about smears. I’m no Bush supporter, or Bill Clinton Supporter, or Reagan Supporter, or Carter Supporter, but LOOK at what those guys had to face from the press on a DAILY BASIS. Those guys took it and didn’t go out crying about it. Now look at these two crybabies. Makes me sick to think one of them is going to be leading our country. DaveinOH, there have been a few Democrats that held nearly 20+ point advantages, nationally, prior to or just coming out of their Convention. The races got significally closer by the general election, in fact several of the Democrats ended up losing the general election after such a lead. My point is if they are for all practical purposes tied now, nationally, the state-by-state elections may not go in November as current trends indicate.

Try again.
“can anyone on this post name one politican who has not flipped flopped?”
If the candidate offers evidence for a change of position, that is leadership. If the candidate replies that changing their mind is a sign of leadership, that is a flip flop.
The difference is not that subtle but extremely important.

PUMA Supporter: Darrell
I don’t like Obama because he’s a fraud, and don’t really know what heck he’s doing, Obama so far has flip flopped on major issues that he was one time for or against, America does not need an indecisive leader like Obama who change stances with the wind, Obama’s actions would make America a laughing stock globally. I can’t wait until the 527’s and the Republican swiftboat machine goes after him for all the lies he has told throughout this campaign, he don’t have Hillary as a buffer anymore, he’s going to have to roll with the punches or get out the ring, and so far, he’s not doing so well, he’s made many of his own supporters upset with for voting yes on Bush’s FISA bill, and befroe it’s all over, Obama is going to make many more major bloopers like this one, he’s proving out to be very inexperienced for the office of the Presidency. I hope the Superdelegates wake-up and realize that Obama is not the right African American to be America’s Commander and Chief.
I would love to have an African American running for President who’s a little more experienced, qualified, and decisive, Obama through his behaviors and actions is definitely not ready for the big time, and PUMA supporters like myself are trying hard to block his offical nomination at the Denver DNC Convention and/or Presidency. Anyway, it’s time to see what a woman can do as President for a change, it’s always been a man in the White House it’s time for the government to be a true equal opportunity employer and let a woman have the keys to the Oval office whether she’s White or Black; it does not matter to me just as long as she’s equally qualified and experienced as a man to be our commander and chief.
Finally Obama needs to stop whinning and complaining everytime a statement, article or magazine photo ptrays him as a Muslim, I’m referring to the New Yorker Magazine fron cover, come on Obama this is politics, if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen, true leaders don’t whine and complain, but brush it oof like a man and keep on stepping, this shows his immaturity, if Obama can’t take little jokes and fun like this, my God what how would he act under pressure in a crisis, Obama ought to know when you’re running for the highest office in the land, you are subject to all sorts of ridicule and jokes, that’s why I think you’re not mature or experienced enough to be President in these trying times, we need a strong grown-up, to lead this country, not a whinning 46 year old kid.
Go Hillary, McCain, or Nader For President!!

So, let me get this straight. Reading all these posts, most of them terribly written, I almost cannot believe these are the issues you people are going to vote on in November.
Is Obama a US citizen? LOL. Yes, yes he is.
Is John McCain eligible to be President? Yes, yes he is.
Also, what exactly constitutes “experience to be President”? Did George W. Bush have this experience and judgement? If not, you still voted him in twice. If so, I’d prefer a President with a different set of “experience”.

The picture on the New Yorker magazine is an embarrassment to the United States of America. To insinuate that Barack and Michelle Obama are terrorists is beyond any standard of decency. In addition, it further fuels the misconception that Muslim = Terrorist. There are Muslims that are citizens of the United States of America and deserve respect.
In addition, the Afro hair on Michelle is racists, indicating the African-American’s are terrorists or whatever negative concept they are trying to convey. It just shows that Rev Wright was correct about racism/ethnic discrimination that is more hidden, but still exists. A very sad day for America.
I am also amazed at the number of posters making hateful statements about Obama. Even people that do not want him to be President should be offended by the picture.
Posted by: Jim | July 14, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm
Obama is Rev. Wights protege, taught, mentored and instructed 20 years to be made into the smooth talking clone of Rev. Wright.
Obama has borrowed, taken or stolen everyones policies and issues, He only has topics no real concrete plans on any of it.
Obama promises everyone, everything. Mission Impossible. When his own Personal goals are all he cares about.
Michelle Obama might have a ivy league education, that does not make her credible.
Obama is a Chicago politician and always will be. Making false promises to get a vote to get elected.
Obama is no door opener, He would have to show up for work and actually do the work for that to happen. He does neither.
He has had 1 bill of his pass, his only other experience is running for office, he has spent more time running for offices than he has been in the office doing the work.

“America does not need an indecisive leader like Obama who change stances with the wind,”
You mean like McCain, who has changed his position on many issues over the last 8 years without much explanation?
“Finally Obama needs to stop whinning and complaining everytime a statement, article or magazine photo ptrays him as a Muslim”
You’ll notice that the campaign actually refused to comment.
“Anyway, it’s time to see what a woman can do as President for a change, it’s always been a man in the White House it’s time for the government to be a true equal opportunity employer and let a woman have the keys to the Oval office”
That’s a nice facade you’ve put up. I thought women were equal to men in every way (according to feminists) and yet it seems you think that a woman would provide a completely different point of view, or more different than the difference between McCain and Obama. Yes, it’d be great to have a woman president, but it doesn’t have to happen now. Please substantiate your objections.

Yes, Bush went to Yale. For undergrad. He was then rejected by the University of Texas School of Law. Then his dad got him into Harvard Business, which is awesome, no doubt, but he didn’t do all that well.
Mrs. Obama has a doctor of jurisprudence from Harvard. (She’s a lawyer). Not sure there’s much of a comparison there.

I know this isn’t really a point of argument, but I don’t understand why many people on the internet think it’s okay to not use proper grammar. It makes it hard to read and take the posters seriously.
I would like to see what evidence you have of any of that. Caucus-goers have to be registered just like anyone else. I think you’re confusing Clinton’s remark about activists being more influential in caucuses with something actually fraudulent. The activists lived where they caucused. If you had evidence of such obvious fraud, you should have presented it to the various Dem. committees.
And even giving you any of those points, you can’t say that the Clinton campaign was innocent in any caucus problems, particularly in Nevada.

The comparison: Bush is proud of America. Michelle isn’t. Pretty clear distinction, don’t you think? Oh yes, Michelle wouldn’t have gotten into college without affirmative action. You can look it up!

Was there such a furor when a New Yorker cover portraying Hillary Clinton as a Central Park tourist with Rudy Giuliani as a menacing mugger behind her was published?
I don’t think it a good cover. I didn’t think the fist bump was a smart move by the Obamas. One way or another, Obama needs to own up to the facts that the rumors this cover satirizes come incidents in his own past that gave the rumor mill something to work with.
This is the Big Game. As you like to tell the rest of us, “get over it”. The longer you yell, the more the cover cycles and like the TUCC speeches, the more damage is done.

Charlie: Secular history (Roman, Egyptian, etc) tells us that the Jews have lived in that land since 1378 B.C.E. and that Jerusalem has always been their capital. There were not one but two temples that were destroyed before the Muslims built the dome of the rock (built on lies I might add). That was Jewish land a full 2,000 years before Islam even existed. There is already a Palestinian Arab home land it is called Jordan. There isn’t any such thing as ethnic Palestinians there never was. Their claims to that land were false to begin with and they lost that disputed land in not one but three separate wars fail and square. Whether you believe in the Zionist movement or not it’s impossible to dispute that that is their land and it has been for over 3,000 years. The Arabs that call themselves Palestinians should just accept defeat and move on with their lives for the sake of their children.

Love the cover… Five months from now Obama is really going to regret hanging out in the shadows and ducking the tough questions about his past, his beliefs, his associations with questionable people and he’s definely going to regret some of his comments he’s made about the behaviour and opinions of ordinary everyday Americans who make up the voting base of BOTH parties.
This was his election to win and look at him…. He’s choking on every other word that leaves his mouth and stumbling around in his own tracks, trying to figure out where he should stand. It’s too late for that now…
McCain… Ughhhh.
Vote Third Party and leave these GOP and Dem fools behind

“I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia. Apparently that is in reaction to the Czech’s agreement with us concerning missile defense, and again some of the Russian now announcement they are now retargeting new targets, something they abandoned at the end of the Cold War, is also a concern.”
Czechoslovakia, of course, hasn’t existed in over 15 years. Not the hugest deal, of course, but McCain keeps making this mistake.
LOL keep defending mccain soetoro

I have cancelled my subscription to the NY. The editors are morons if they still do not understand that the citizens who voted for Bush do not get satire and that the cover is both a smear and a Murdoch-driven ploy….Morons do not deserve my money.
