Obama’s VP Short-List Shortcomings

ABC News’ Jan Crawford Greenburg and Howard L. Rosenberg report: Since he arrived back in Washington D.C. early Monday, Sen. Barack Obama has spent hours with the co-chairs of his vice presidential committee search team — Caroline Kennedy and attorney Eric Holder.  On Monday night, Kennedy was the draw to a $1,000-a-head Georgetown fundraiser and today, rumors are swirling, thanks to an anonymously sourced Washington Post story, that Obama has settled on Virginia’s Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine.  But all of Obama’s potential "short list" names have their own shortcomings. Let’s start with  the flavor of the day: Kaine. Kaine and Obama have forged a friendship since Kaine became the first governor outside of Illinois to endorse the Senator.  They share family roots in Kansas and Harvard law degrees. Yet, though Kaine is firmly on Obama’s shortlist of potential running mates, the 50-year-old Catholic has his own  deficits. He is a liberal-leaning Democrat from a mid-sized, conservative swing state who won election to the statehouse only three years ago.  Before that he was mayor of Richmond, a mid-sized, insular Southern city that prides itself on having been the capital of the Confederacy.  He has no foreign policy or defense experience, a credential deficit for which Obama has been criticized too.   And he is virtually unknown on the national stage.  The other top contenders — Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton — are all sitting senators. But picking Bayh could complicate Democratic plans to try and win a 60-vote cloture-proof majority in the Senate. If an Obama – Bayh ticket won in November, there’s a chance a Republican governor could replace Bayh in the Senate. In Indiana, the statehouse is contested.  If a Republican wins, he would take office before Bayh is inaugurated. In Delaware, Sen. Joe Biden has a Senate seat for life if he wants it, and he could shore up Obama’s own foreign policy shortcomings anyway as Secretary of State.  The governor of Delaware, Ruth Ann Minner, is a Democrat, so his seat would stay on that side of the aisle if he gets the V.P. nod. But some Democrats worry he can be a loose cannon — and are concerned his selection could also concede the point that Obama, in fact, needs a senior VP with foreign policy experience to shore him up. Most observers believe that Obama’s statement on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday that Sen. Clinton “would be on anybody’s short list” of VP candidates was just a sop to her constituency.  And complicating the equation in the senate of course is the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate, Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman who now calls himself an Independent Democrat and caucuses with the party.  But if Lieberman speaks at the Republican Convention as rumored, staffers in the senate say the Democrats plan to strip him of his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, kick him out of the party caucus and he will, for all intents and purposes, become a Republican.

Well they are already kicking ELECTED Clinton delegates out of the party.

A Clinton delegate was kicked out…..FOR VOTING FOR MCCAIN….The democrats have an absolute right to kick out a delegate if they don’t abide by the rules.

In addition, Biden is not too old, but not too young. He looks very good on camera and does a fantastic job as surrogate. He really knows how to push back those Republican smears. My pick: Joe Biden.

Believe me, HRC supporters know when they’re/we’re being dismissed, with a pat on our collective little female heads, which are too filled with fluff to know when we’re being patronized.
The Great Obama better watch how he handles this whole thing. No one likes being patronized. People won’t automatically shift their allegiance — and their votes — from her to him. Those votes should NOT be taken for granted.

BOTTOM LINE, IF OBAMA DOESNT PICK HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON AS THE VP AND HIS RUNNING MATE HE IS FINISHED. ENJOY HIS LAST 13 WEEKS OF FAME.THAT WILL BE THE LAST STRAW FOR ME. A DEVOTED HILLARY SUPPORTER AND ALWAYS WILL BE. CANT HARDLY WAIT TO SEE WHO HE PICKS. I WILL EITHER NOT VOTE OR VOTE MCCAIN. MY WHOLE FAMILY AND FRIENDS FEEL THE SAME WAY. AND WE ARE ALL FROM THE GREAT SWING STATE OF OHIO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I am weary of the “Judith Martin” types on these blogs. Either you are a democrat or you aren’t – anybody who would vote for McCain over sour grapes is NOT a democrat – they are a spoiled child who shouldn’t be allowed to vote at all. That’s why you have to be 18. Supposed to be limited to adults!

Obama had better find the most popular Democratic politician in Ohio and make him his VP. Without Ohio, his chances of becoming President are about 50/50. With Ohio, he is a lock.

I wonder if there isn’t a below the radar candidate around somewhere? I think of the candidates discussed here Bayh is the most likely, but I still think there is a possibility of someone jumping out of the woodwork.
I like Biden but I think he is probably too much like McCain in the trivialities (experienced, slightly maverick, foreign policy expert) to get the nod. Also I am not sure that Obama really needs FP help as much as economy help. I think thats what puts Bayh at the top of the list right now. Biden as SofS maybe. Also it seems like Bill Richardson has gotten forgotten in some of these discussions.

I really am sick to my stomach that Obama would pick…would even think of picking Kaine.
Do they realize that this is one of the only choices they could make that REALLY hurts them.
I know people have been talking about him but Kaine
oy
No foreign Policy
No national platform issue experience at all
No national debate experience
A mixed bag governorship
ANTI-CHOICE…are you kidding me.
and I just heard theat kaine cancelled his event tomorrow…I am going to throw up…
all the work people put in …I can not imagine he would be this
I can’t until he announces I need to back up and remind myself thta the guy we supported would never pick Kaine as his VP to go up against McCain.

As a Hillary Democrat, I do not care who is Obama’s VP. I voted for Hillary in the Virginia election, and I am disgusted with this party. Now part of John’s silent majority, we wait patiently for November.

I’m from Missouri and Obama is going to have to “Show Me” Clinton as a running mate, or I will vote against him.

Posted by: Cardsgal | July 29, 2008, 5:47 pm 5:47 pm

dl, sounds like most of kaine’s experience would match Obama’s experience. What is the problem here, of course he might have too much experience for Obama.

Posted by: billy bob | July 29, 2008, 5:49 pm 5:49 pm

Notwithstanding that the 2000 and 2004 selections were both frauded and the DEMOCRATS likely won both, each had terrible VP picks as we look back. As Lieberman has morphed into whatever you would like to call him today, you would be shocked that he was Al Gores VP pick who failed at his one anointed task, to bring Florida onboard in 2000. In hindsight, we now see how bad John Edwards was as Kerrys pick, who undoubtedly forced Kerry to play HAPPY SMILE in the face of SWIFT BOAT attacks that actually helped the USA elect a National Guard shirk while dumping on a combat veteran. That Vietnam thingie just don’t sit well with true military persons, I suppose. Just as the Clintons may have helped torpedo Gores chances to help see Hillary get the nod, perhaps Edwards also did not care so much for Kerry winning, as Edwards 2008 bid was mostly NUMERO UNO in his mind. Now that Hillary has been rebuffed for 2008 I hope she remains in the Senate to help the USA recover, but she has some baggage which includes being a democratic war monger along with BIDEN, and was and maybe still is a member of a semi-secret right wing religious group called the FELLOWSHIP where she meets with ladies like the wives of JAMES BAKER, JACK KEMP, and ENNIS BAAKE. Edwards, who as his first act as our Senator from my state, NC, pumped money and computers into IOWA for his planned bid for the office I like to term, PRECEDENT, due to what the current occupant did to said office, can find comfort with his mistress and hopefully not confront his wife on her hospital bed with divorce papers. Point of my post…I hope neither Hillary or Edwards are asked to serve in any Cabinet posts in the upcoming Obama PRESIDENCY, or the term I trust him to restore said office to.

Just imagine a Kaine/Ridge debate…
(now that Kaine has cancelled his event tomorrow for “some” reason.
you probably can’t picture a debate…because who knows what this guy will be like…he was bad on the freakin dem rebuttal he did, never mind a national debate.
but now imagine a
McCain/Ridge ticket vs.
Obama Kaine
it is suddenly and inherently about national defense , foreign policy and security…
and experience…
and Obama’s choice for VP.
there is a little bounce in Virginia (one that is close to what we would have had just having the dem governor campaign there)
we lose PA and Ohio…and mayb emichigan
and whatever little bumb we got in Virginia dissipates from the overhwhelming difference in Macho security chutzpah…against a half inspirational and smart ticket of someone we all think is really smart besides the choice he made of his right hand man.
oy
lets hope Kaine was cancelling his baseball event tomorrow because he needed to rest.

You Hillary supporters sound bitter. Cling to guns and religion much? I hope he picks anybody for VP but Hillary.

Posted by: Ericka | July 29, 2008, 5:56 pm 5:56 pm

I don’t understand the purpose of this article. The convention and the election are still a long way off. This appears to be either a hit piece or a means of directing the way people may care to vote. Making up a a list of potential VP short comings is one thing, if you’re just speculating or thinking out loud. In which case you draw attention to both short lists and short comings of each party. That’s more of an Op-Ed piece. But to camophlage it as a news event? Why inject such a negative perspective at this stage of the game if not to influence voters and polls?

Posted by: foxisms | July 29, 2008, 5:58 pm 5:58 pm

Didn’t she concede the election like over a month ago? Why is she even still relevent. After Hillary threw the kitchen sink at Obama I would not pick her as a VP either.

Obama`s ego demands that he pick a woman so that if he wins he can claim fame to not only being the first Black President but the one who made it possible for a woman to succeed him as the first woman President. And he can intimate that any greater experience and better qualifications are …. well, she is a woman.

Obama has judgement and national experience…
Kaine doesn’t
and it wasn’t that we thought Obama had overwhelming experience …obviously but it is his judgement…
and if his judgement picks a guy like Kaine
I will fess up and say… I was wrong on his judgement…
and I would feel very bad because I see a tidal wave about to hit our country.
that is why I can not believe he would pick someone who doesn’t have a wealth of knowledge on the issues he is facing to be his partner going into this.
I have always said…Biden Bayh (although he is boring as all get out and obama doesn’t need that either) or Clinton just for the familiarity and comfort of people seeing a familar partner in this change he is making.
That is why I still think he couldn’t be picking Kaine it makes absolutely no sense.

Foxisms
I think it is because Kaine cancelled his events tomorrow and the blogosphere and pundits are realizing that if obama picks Kaine…we just shot ourselves handily in the foot…no maybe the head.

All of the recent events in the last four years with Democrats have made me glad that I left the Democratic Party four years ago.

If Obama wants the faith vote he better stay away from Joe Biden. He made derogatory comments against Christians and people of faith in his early C-Span Stump speeches in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Nancy, I was a lifelong democrat who always voted the party line. However, I won’t vote for Obama. I supported Hillary not only because I thought she was a better candidate but also because I think Obama is a horrible candidate. I am very disappointed in the democratic party and I am now an independent. I don’t think I’ll have a problem voting for McCain as he has some good characteristics and experience. Also, I believe the democrats will maintain majorities in House and Senate, so having a president who is from the republican party provides more checks and balances.

Posted by: Susan | July 29, 2008, 6:06 pm 6:06 pm

I am sure that Obama will pick Edwards, or even Richardson. I like Richardson. I am not voting for either party, so I am just fine with whomever Obama wants.

Posted by: misa | July 29, 2008, 6:06 pm 6:06 pm

Susan, You got that right. We need a balance. I dislike Obama more than McCain. I just think that Obama is far too solipsistic.

Posted by: misa | July 29, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

dl, it is obamas lack of judgement that has me opposing him. His poor judgement on the surge tells me all i need to know about his forign policy decisions. What makes it worse is that he will not admit he made a mistake and just say he was wrong. I am sick and tired of people who never make mistakes, and Obama fits the mold, therefore he cannot be trusted. This is only one instance he was wrong and would not admit it. All he had to do was say he has learned from it and lets move on.

Posted by: billy bob | July 29, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

i think Obama should pick Evan Byah, he has forgein experience, he’s quiet, and a great obama supporter, and most of all Obama can carry Indiana on Dem Side!

The Clinton delegate from Wisconsin had made a public statement that she would support McCain and was removed by the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin State Democratic Party. Parties have always had rules disqualifying people from party positions for giving public support to the candidate of another party. She was censored but was removed for breaking very clear rules on party loyalty. She can either cry in her beer or whine in her cheese as there’s lots of both in Wisconsin.

Monarchland, At least, unlike some Obama supporters, you are saying his VP choice is vital. Most of his supporters think that he is going to win in a landslide because they think he is so great. They don’t even think he needs the votes of many of us. So when you say that, it sounds like you think Obama stands a chance to lose.

dl, not so, almost all of congress supported the war with the intel they had the time. Wether you supported it then or now is irrelevent, we are there and judgement calls had to be made to get us out. Obama supported the wrong strategy and most Americans see that now. I cannot understand how anyone would support that type of judgement.

Posted by: billy bob | July 29, 2008, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

I think that John McCain lacks integrity. Speaking as a Navy vet myself how can he talk about supporting the troops but remain consistantly absent to vote for our benefits. Not to mention the sneaky way he is choosing to attack Obama using footage of him shooting basketball with the troops to attack him for not supporting them. You have to admit that was kind of low. McCain should follow his words with deeds, like actually showing up to vote for troop funding and veteran’s benefits.

A President can select a Cabinet loaded with Foreign Policy, Military, etc experts as aides.

The DNC doesn’t think this is a democracy, from the way they stripped Hillary of her four delegates, as an insult to her, on top of choosing all the uncommited votes for Obama. We can vote for whomever we want, despite threats from everyone that Obama cares so much for women. He cares so much for human life that he voted (funny thing for him to vote on anything) against the Infant Born Alive bill. If he would deny healthcare for any infant who survives an abortion, then just exactly who does he want healthcare for? That is my concern with Obama. Healthcare? For WHOM if not the most fragile members of our society. The baby is OUT of the mother’s womb. It is not longer an issue for her and he denies it care to help it survive.

Sam Nunn, or George Mitchell would provide something for conservative, compassionate Dems and elderly to embrace. I don’t think any American statesmen, short of former Presidents, have the public, private, domestic and international credentials that Mitchell’s resume boast– It could even be argued that his Arab-American roots (mother was from Lebanon and father Irish) could add to Obama’s already diverse image.
Unlike Kaine, Sam Nunn could really help in the Deep South. As Senate Armed Services committed chair, Southern states are still owing him for keeping them off the base closure list.
For just the freshness, history and intellect, it would be great to see an Obama/Kaine ticket

I can tell you this. Obama is NOT the antiChrist mentioned in Revelation. If he were, he would be whooping McCain by a 90% margin. God will put the person in power He wants. He sets up governments. Sometimes He wants that person in there for just one reason to do one thing. It is up to Him. I will vote but I have no control. God is in control. Um, Does anyone remember that awful president, the one that ran up the national debt to the higest it has ever been after coming into office with the higest surplus ever created? The one that raped our constitution, and has the most unpopular rating of any president ever? The president that they are trying to IMPEACH, for WAR crimes, not a blow job? The president that was so uninvolved after Katrina that ever the biased press, had to actually say something for a change? Yeah that president… Well, Josh Mccain has been his cheerleader for a long time, he has backed almost every vote Bush needed, and was a virtual mouth piece for the war, standing up and saying IT WILL BE A VERY QUICK AND EASY WAR TO WIN!!!!!!! So you die hard, republicans, the ones that will vote for MCBUSh, because hes a republican, no other reason needed, well I would think about that vote a lot. People die every day so you can make that vote! Those people, whom Bush/McCain had no problem sending over seas to a war that was as false as Pam Andersons boobs, are risking their lives because YOUR PRESIDENT, the one YOU voted FOR and the one you are going to VOTE for again, for no other reason that “I am a republican” or I like Hillary and I will vote for McCain if she isnt chosen as running mate, Well, you sent those people to die for your choices, because you voted for Bush, because he was a republican too. I would strongly pray that you think about what has happened the last 7 1/2 years and maybe think again, before rushing to send more and more off to die for reasons we really arent sure about, and since they are so very well hiden for now, may never really understand. I think i would take the ability to deal with foreign leaders and speak to them as a human, a lot mroe than the experience of McCain, whom was a POW in the Vietnam War, as horrible as that was, he didnt learn that ever war isnt won, and evertime you fire a gun, it doesnt have to be called WAR! our country has had enough BUSH/McCain MCBUSH and we need some time to try to “fix” the collateral damage, and maybe pay off some of the debt we owe China and Saudi Arabia, unless they just decdie to take our properties instead of us paying them back with our now worthless dollar. We really dont need more of the same, and sicne McCain is such a hot head, that cant admit we havent won anything (I dont seea prize to win in this crap we are in) well, i would think McCain would be a driving force to get us into the next battle Maybe against IRAN, Since he has already laughed and joked and sang Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb IRAN! He wuold be the one that would slime us into more war, and since our miliraty is stretched to the point they are doing 4-5 tours, and extended times, in IRAQ, and are going to be into Afghanistan after that, DO YA REALLY WANT TO STAY AT WAR UNTIL We win something? I dont think we can do it and especially not alone, and McCain shows he isnt very good at making foreign friends, so the world isnt going to be with us, and it will be IRAQ all over again! STOP and THINK!!!!! And dont vote just because, the next kids they send to the next war zone, may be yours or your friends, and do you want that really? A very high price to pay for being stupid I think.

Too bad most people are not that intelligent and thoughtful. I am an independent too and have been since 2000. I always try to vote for the canidate who address my family’s issues. The day John McCain bothered not to vote for increased funding for the GI Bill was the day he lost both I and my husband’s vote.

As a foreigner looking in and supporting the Democratic party, the most stupid commenters here are the Clinton supporters who can’t get over the fact that their candidate lost the race to the DEM nomination to Obama.
C’mon folks, grow up. Your whining tells more about yourself than Clinton. I tell you this, had Clinton won the nomination and go on to win the presidency, America will be worse then now on the international front and continue down the path that Bush has taken for the last 8 years.
The truth is, Bush and Clinton are cut from the same cloth, only they wear it differently. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that all out.

I predicted Kaine months ago, because I also pegged Obama correctly as a political hack. The only rational choice is Hillary, but Obama stacked his “selection committee” full of anti Clinton democrats, the most notable, a Kennedy. It’s so sad. They ACTUALLY think that Hillary’s voters will come along anyway. Don’t be so sure FELLAS. Obama makes a lame choice like Kaine, I’m staying home. And I’m not alone.

Wonderful. Going to need to take some of that money that we save getting the he** out of Iraq to beef up the Justice Department for all the indictments of this administrations crooks and cronies tho. Obama ,Wright and Farrakhan are cut from the same cloth,…Obama’s prayer
……..Paper, rapped for outing Obama note, claims campaign pre-approved leak…..What initially seemed to be a journalistic scoop of dubious moral propriety now seems to be a case of an Israeli paper being played by the Barack Obama campaign. Maariv, the second most popular newspaper in Israel, was roundly criticized for publishing the note Obama left in the Kotel. But now a Maariv spokesperson says that publication of the note was pre-approved for international publication by the Obama campaign, leading to the conclusion that the “private” prayer was intentionally leaked for public consumption.

To all angry HRC supporters – get over it! Selecting her as the Democratic VP would be suicide for our party. The corrupt Republican thugs would like nothing more than to remind the public of all of the scandals Hillary has been a part of over the last two decades – not to mention her husband’s impeachment. Like Judith Martin, I am from Ohio. However, unlike Judith Martin, I am able to think logically. Clinton lost, even though she (along with Bill) tried dirty tricks. Now Obama is facing an ignorant McCain who doesn’t know anything about the economy (self admitted) or the world (note the recent gaffes). It is unbelievable that there are such ignorant people still existing in the Great Buckeye state.

I see the Clinton fans are still threatening to vote for McCain if they cant get their way. Even when Clinton, their Idol, has asked them to support Obama. Must be a sexist thing. They want Hillary and if not, will vote in spite of her and against he wishes. That tells me they dont care about who is best, they just want a woman. Sad.
Now if you look at all the Clinton baggage. Hers, his and both. If Obama were to select her, he would be up staged because the negitive campaining republicans would go after her and her baggage and thats all we would hear about between now and the election. Other than that she would be a great choice, but Obama does want to get elected. You sexist women, that call everyone else sexist need to vote for who is best. Nancy
the problem is if obama picked (as his first real Presidential choice)
a
candidate for VP
who brings no great knowledge base on any Presidential subject
who is
anti gay rights and anti choice (the same stance that Bush had when he took office)
who is a much less qualified and unknown commodity that has never made any significant showing on judgement
that would say he is not Barack Obama that everyone cheered for.
It is not just about the war and anti-Mccain
Obama is about something but choosing Kaine is anti-thetical to that.

As a longtime Democrat whose recent ancestors were also lifelong Democrats, I can not bring myself to vote for someone as arrogant as Obama. I have no respect for him or his wife (she, who apparently wasn’t proud of how this country came together immediately after September 11th or any other time in her adult life). Nor can I bring myself to vote outright for McCain. My decision is to vote for Senator Clinton — as Obama’s running mate or as a write-in for President on the November ballot. I urge all others who feel as I do to do the same.

dwduck61
what obama has shown in judgement and in his grasp of the subjects is worth more than experience…
if he wasn’t so prevelant in isues we can see and so well-informed etc…
but he knows that his one weakness is experience which is second to judgement…so Kaine shows no record of judgement that is Presidential…
and Obama know s what his weakness is himself…
that even though he has judgement and the right message…there is much of America that needs to feel comfortable with him…and that as he asks them to change…he needs someone next to him that America knows…
He knows that is a hurdle…
so he picks Kaine?
this is the best man in the country he could choose to be a hearbeat away from the Presidency…a man who has had a lackluster 2.5 years as Governor of Virginia.
and who doesnot inspire, comfort or make anyone feel safer or hopeful.
Did you see his dem response to the state of the union.
this guy is a horrible choice.

Posted by: dl | July 29, 2008, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm

Obama has made it clear that contrary to history, his VP will not play the traditional “stereotypical, attend funerals” VP. For those who say he doesn’t have enough experience, coupling him with a VP who DOES, in fact, have the experience, well-rounded on all issues, will require that he bring someone aboard who is/has Washington experience. Some may say that Biden is too much “same old Washington” – but that same old Washington brings a tremendous bi-partisan respect from his colleagues in Congress, and an unquestionable domestic and foreign policy background. Further, he is readily capable of stepping into Obama’s shoes as POTUS at any given moment, if need be, without any hesitation on being questioned about his experience to lead the country. Forget about what the extreme left and/or right pundits have to say – take a look at his stance on the issues – and if anyone is really honest about the “real Joe Biden” – they would see that he and Barack Obama share, and have virtually always shared the same ideals on most all of the issues and how their plans mirror and complement each other. Yes, my first pick for the nominee was Joe Biden – and as much as I would hate to lose his bite and tenacity working for “We, the people” in the Senate, I would welcome his two-cents worth and then some that he would bring to the White House. Obama/Biden ’08 is my choice.

I’m so happy to see that the Clinton supporters are not going to vote for Obama. They are the smartest voters amongst the Democrats. There is nothing to prevent Hillary from running as an independent. It worked for Leiberman in CT. I think Richardson would be the best choice as president from the whole party. One more thing, it is not anti-choice, it is pro-life. We don’t call you anti-life, we call you pro-choice and it’s part of the reason why more Republicans have been elected. All the liberals aborted their children and now those aborted children can’t vote. Think about that for a moment…

Obama has to pick a VP that has the political experience, knowledge, military and foreign relations experience to be president. As it’s well known, Obama is lacking in all aspects of presidential qualifications.

Posted by: Barry | July 29, 2008, 8:08 pm 8:08 pm

For Obama to even put Kaine in a short list tells us that Obama is not ready to be President. Obama is just as indecisive when he’s talking as he is when choosing his VP.

Could John McCain benefit from Barack Obama’s much-publicized foreign trip? Several observations from the just-completed USA Today/Gallup poll suggest that this is a possibility…..The trip may also be responsible for the finding of a difference in the preferences of likely versus registered voters in the new USA Today/Gallup poll. McCain gains among likely voters compared to registered voters in this poll, something he has not done in previous USA Today/Gallup polls this year.

Posted by: PCC | July 29, 2008, 8:13 pm 8:13 pm

I doubt Obama has the knowledge to pick a VP. He is a freshman senator, with the worst attendance in congress. He needs help finding his way around, as he has an escourt when he shows up for work, to guide him through the halls of congress.

If Obama doesn’t want a split democratic party, he needs to pick Hillary. Otherwise, the 18 million Clintonites and many others (which include a whole lot of the Hispanic group and female voters) will give him the cold shoulder in November in one of two ways. One: they stay home and don’t vote, or two: they go to the polls and vote for McCain, Nader or Barr. Don’t be a fool Obama………pick Hillary.

I sure hope Clinton has more of a chance than what the media is letting on. This election is going to be close. If you look at by likely registered voters its scary how close McCain gets. We need a base hugging democrat who can sure up the traditional voting blocks within the dem party. Clinton with her blue collar, woman and latino base would be perfect. i dont care about the garbage that went on in the primaries or what baggage she may have. he needs her for Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Florida. She can help him win, not just make him look good. If he swallows his pride they would be an unstoppable duo.

Obama/Richardson is best for the experiece and the sheer GOODNESS of Richardson, but Bayh, Buden…all good. No woman–cant do it this time cause it would p*ss off the Hil supporters.

I hadn’t seen Kaine speak, so I found some videos of him speaking online… he’d certainly be loyal to Obama, but I’m afraid that he just doesn’t strike me as a particularly brilliant or charismatic individual in his own right. It’s nice that he’s a Democratic governor in Virginia, but I suspect that he might have gotten there largely on Mark Warner’s coattails. I don’t at all hate him, but I don’t think that he’s the best choice.
I like Biden and Bayh. They both have an impressive records of accomplishment, and come off as intelligent, reasonable, etc. I also like Sebelius.
I would only approve of Clinton as VP if we could be absolutely sure that nothing bad would happen to Obama while he was in office. The world doesn’t offer such guarantees, so I’ll say no to that.

Obama is guilty of infanticide.
Obama opposed the Born Alive Infants Protection Act (BAIPA), which was first introduced into the Illinois legislature in 2001
He was the only state senator to speak against the bill on the Senate floor.
The Born Alive Infants Protection Act passed the Illinois legislature only in 2005, after Obama had left the body.
Obama, as the Democratic Presidential nominee now want to use taxpayers money to fund abortions.
Why does Obama want to kill innocent babies so much???
I can only conclude that he is a hardened baby killer.

McCain should pick Bob Dole as his VP. He will make McCain look younger and less decrepit. Furthermore, Dole can educate McCain on the benefits of Viagra. Lastly, Dole can teach McCain to speak in the third person. It’s a match made in heaven: “Grumpy Old Men in ’08″

I have to say again this Kaine thing is like a punch in the gut…
anti-choice (oh but promises as he is running he won’t overturn Roe…same as Bush said when he ran) and anti gay rights?
are you kidding?
and I would say okay…well what is his record and statements on foreign policy…none.
How about what he thinks of the banking crisis…none to speak of.
I am just …knocked off my feet by even this idea of Kaine…as being on a short list…
and the funny thing is like i said…he gives McCain cover to pick Ridge.
well a Ridge VP on the ticket will crush Kaine on experience and security and foreign policy (and even being a governor for chrissake) enough that McCain won’t lose his base.
That would mean PA chances are would go red…Ohio is quite possible red at that point…Michigan may go on the overall experience issue …and NH (oy with 2 vets against a ticket with Kaine backing up Barack’s brains)chances are would go red.
and the killer
Obama/Kaine in Virginia against 2 vets McCain/Ridge …in a highly military state…
this could quite possibly would be the stupidest chess move ever made…
so I am praying with all my might that this is just a bad joke.

McCain should pick a woman to pick up the very annoyed Hiliary supporters—-and it would be a good long term pr stunt for the republicans to be associated with the first female vp (providing McCain gets in.) I am sorry it isn’t fair to chose one based on their sex, but it is what it is.

I’m still in Shock And Awe over how badly & unfairly Hillary was treated by the DNC, Obama and the Media’s. She should run as McCain’s VP. As bad as the economy is, it sure is still strange, a mystery, how Obama got all that money, sure would Like to know the truth behind it all. Voteing McCain in November.

McCain shouldn’t pick a female VP for the sack of her being a women. What Women do you know whos is as Qualified as Hillary? Hillary is Experienced & Qualifed to be the President. Obama is Nightmare.

Posted by: Otis | July 30, 2008, 12:32 am 12:32 am

Hillary is the best choice for VP after everything that has happened in the primaries; the support for her has been tremendous. Obama is weak where she has strength.
If Obama chooses some blah-blah male politician, he will have a very tough and, I feel, fatal fight with McCain on his hands.
If McCain chose Hillary, I would be inclined to vote that ticket; even though I feel McCain is arrogant and biggoted in his “good-ole-boy-establishment” mind set.
McCain’s wife is a nightmare. Who wants this self-serving, stepford-wife monster as USA’s first lady?!!! Mrs. Obama has integrity, fortitude, and the self-confidence of her own intelligent opinion. We need her strength, not the aged “Paris Hilton”-like tag-along trophy wife of McCain; God forbid! The choice of a person’s partner shows alot about the character and the other choices this person will make. I stand behind the choice Obama has made; wise, sound, and intelligent.
Maybe Obama’s choice for VP will be just as wise.

LOL at you idiotic Obama supporters. You people are in for a very rude awakening come November. I hate to say Obama is a weak candidate who has no chance of winning unless he picks Hillary and her 18 million votes. I view Obama as a very arrogant person who is not very bright because he won’t do what’s good for the party by putting Hillary on the ticket. The audacity of this idiot to think this is all about him and not the will of the people.

Obama bin Hussein is a one term black senator with an Arab Muslim heritage and who is a strong advocate of Black Liberation theology. He is not the man to lead this country. Come November, Americans are going to kick this closet muslim’s shiny black @ss back to the senate.

I looked at a few more videos of Kaine, and I’m going to recant what I said about his not being charismatic. I can see it now. He’s not so good at rallies, but he’s good when speaking conversationally, or playing a harmonica. He’s got his own style, apparently. Still, I have my doubts. I’d vote for Biden, then Bayh, then Sebelius, then Kaine, then Clinton. Gore would be at the top of the list if he wanted it, but he clearly, clearly doesn’t.

I’m thrilled to see that Hillary’s chances of being VP have pretty much been flushed down the toilet. I wouldn’t have voted for Obama if she were his VP. I was hoping Obama would pick a VP that has some foreign policy & military experience; like Biden or Wesley Clark. I don’t think this guy Kaine is going to be much help come November.
I can’t bare the thought of McCain in the White House, that guy is SCARY! He won’t talk about the issues simply because he has no position on any of them, hence, his daily flip-flopping. It’s sad to think McCain is the “best” candidate that the republicans could offer.
Some of us Obama supporters need to search the internet and see if we can find some dirt on McCain and plaster it all over the internet. I’d like to see the old senile geezer blow a gasket!!

I keep seeing emails from Hillary supporters who will not vote for Obama unless Hillary is on the ticket. Well, I’m a Hillary supporter, and I won’t vote for Obama even if Hillary IS on the ticket. I won’t vote for Obama – period! His little stunt at the wall in Jerusalam was more than I can stomach. What kind of man would write a prayer to God, asking Him to help guard against pride among other things, and then give a copy of the prayer to a newspaper beforehand. And before you say that never happened, you stupid Obamabots, a second newspaper in Israel has revealed that they, too, got a copy of Obama’s private prayer before he stuck it into the holy wall in Israel. So it looks like Jesus Obama prayed to God to keep him humble, among other things, and then made sure the entire world knows about it. God help us if this arrogant son of a youknowwhat becomes president.

The only way I might, maybe, have a tiny inkling to vote for Obama is if Hillary were on the ticket. I would vote for Hillary in a heartbeat, would NEVER willing give my vote to Obama, knew that very early on (did my research don’t like what I see). It has nothing to do with being a loyal democrat or republican, it comes down to voting for the best for the job and that isn’t Obama, especially if he doesn’t pick Hillary. But who knows maybe if he picks Kaine, Edwards will direct him to his hair stylist, lord know he could at least get a good hair cut LOL

I think all the HRC supporters are silly if they think HRC would even want to be on a ticket with Obama..I mean if she did it would only be because she would try and and take the leadership away from Barack. And why would htey want a guy telling HRC what to do..she can still do loads of good and not be VP.

After reading all these posts, more depression sets in…I voted for HRC in the Indiana primary but would NOT do so again. Her supporters are a bunch of whiners…it was close, but she LOST…anybody that won’t vote over the VP selection is the worst kind of coward, the same kind of cowards who have enabled GWB to make a shambles of our country…Democrats don’t need any of you…so take your whine (and cheese) and just go away…you have permanently ended any possibility of HRC being a factor in future democratic contests…you are traitors and by association so is she.

Obama’s VP choice, I believe is VITAL to his chances in November. I LOVED the Clinton’s before their divisive Primary campaign. And now it seems that he owes Hillary the VP, because of all those Hil supporters who say they will not vote for him. But most of them seem to say that they will not vote for Obama regardless. And I also think Obama could loose many independents, as well as many white men and women who do not feel that a woman should be in the White house. I personally would welcome a woman, but many would not. And many also would not like the idea of an African American and a Woman being the two most powerful people in the Country and arguably the world.
I wish there was something I could do to get the Hillary people on Board. Particularly since any more Republican Judges on the court would NOT be a good thing.
Personally I like Bayh

I am not politically inclined, however, I find it odd that true Democrats would vote Republican for any reason. Actually, I find it odd that anyone who has witnessed the last 8 years would vote a Republican back into office, especially McCain. This election is going to be a very close one and very important for people to show up at the polls. As far as HRC for a running mate, I don’t think that anyone who does not have prior military experience would be a good candidate. As far as Ohio goes, Vote Democrat, please!

Posted by: yolanda | July 30, 2008, 1:36 pm 1:36 pm

Thank you “HOLLA”. I am in a similar boat. I voted for Hillary in the NY primary. And would have been VERY happy with EITHER as the nominee. But I did start to switch sides around April/May with the mean tactics, but STILL would have voted for Hillary (or any DEMOCRAT) in November. Even if some how they find a way to give the Nomination to Hillary, I STILL would vote Democratic even though I would feel as some Hillary supporters feel, that it was stolen from the one who actually won.

Why does Obama need a vice president anyway?

Posted by: ragnar30066 | July 30, 2008, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

I consider myself a true independent voter. I’ve never seen the logic in voting strictly for a party no matter who the candidate might be. With that said the single worse president in my lifetime has been George W Bush, and I’ve became very disheartened by the Republican party over the past 8 years. I’m a firm believer in Hillary, and wish I could’ve voted for her in the primary but as an independent voter I don’t believe in registering with a party. I don’t think Obama is competent to be President and I don’t care for McCain either. I wish a strong 3rd. Party candidate would step up that actually stood a chance, but I know that won’t happen. I’m still somewhat undecided at this point but I think with Hillary on the ticket I may vote for Obama. Without Hillary on the ticket I’ll definitely vote for McCain.

I think the more interesting question is who John McCain will pick as his running mate. It could made a big difference in how people see his candidacy. Sen. Obama pretty much has his pick of the litter (albeit mangy). But I doubt he’ll pick HRC–hey, the night is young and, who knows, Obama still might implode? Unlikely? Maybe. But you never know what HRC has up her sleeve. There’s no doubt ‘her people’ are digging for dirt to throw on him: ‘How DARE he be nominated–this was MY historic moment!’

I would never vote for McCain or any other Republican for that matter. Just look at what the Republicans have done every time they’re in the White House or control Congress. But neither will I vote for this unprincipled egomaniacal hollow suit with a hypocritical Messiah complex. I am so thoroughly disgusted with the DNC and our party leadership and how they manipulated the primaries to give us this corrupt, inexperienced hoof-in-mouth diseased git who is now so indebted to him that they can control him and thus the White House, I’m writing in Al Gore for President when November rolls around. Joe: And we may be able to get rid of Obama is Hillary is not the VP. Don’t kid youself, Hillary’s voters are not going to vote for him if she isn’t chosen. You listen to politics too much. Voters make the decision on voting whom they want. Biden, Bayh, Richardson, Kathleen may have been in politics but not enough to know about running the country. You must be smoking the same pot as Obama that’s why he couldn’t answer questions quick enough on the forum or a debate. Get a grip. Obama needs extensive training to run this country and he would get it with Hillary. Biden is too hard nosed and his mouth is bad. Kathleen should stay where she’s at and be glad she has that job.

The RNC must be dancing in the streets reading the comments from the “Democratic” Hillary supporters. I don’t care if she’s his running mate or not,the country cannot survive another 4-8 years of Republican mismanagement. We need a change! Also, I am so sick of hearing the pro- life mantra about the rights of the unborn. You draw a line in the sand and say that if a candidate is pro-choice, you won’t vote for them, period. That’s just an excuse to not bother thinking about the other issues at stake: the economy, healthcare, the housing crisis, not to mention the lives of the already-born that are being sacrificed in Iraq & Afganistan. The GOP cranks up the pro-life organ grinder and pays lip service to the Christian Right every election year and you blindly dance to the tune, when the candidates have no intention of ever putting the issue on the table. I am pro- life. I am for feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, providing health care for the sick. Obama has a plan for change. McBush has a plan for status quo.

And like another poster wrote, after Hillary threw everything but the kitchen sink at Obama, I sure as heck wouldn’t have chosen her either! If she’d backed out after Super Tuesday and stopped the smeers, she might have had a shot! But at this point, it’s her own darn fault. I am a woman and have always dreamt of seeing a woman as president during my lifetime. But, as wonderful as she is with some issues, I just don’t have the faith in her that she is THE ONE.
Any of you who are voting McCain just because Clinton’s no longer in the race deserve to live in the situation we’re in right now! Instead of trying to make it better you choose to perpetuate it just because you want to be whiney babies, whose friend didn’t get chosen for dodge ball.
You guys should like 3-way call Hillary and ask her if she like likes you or if she’s like mad at you for like flirting with Bill in 2nd period. Uhkay???
