Protesters Interrupt Bush Holiday Speech
ABC’s Matthew Jaffe reports: Protesters today repeatedly interrupted President Bush’s Fourth of July speech at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s residence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
No sooner had Bush started speaking at the naturalization ceremony welcoming new American citizens than protesters began shouting at him, calling him a "war criminal."
The President paused in his remarks and then responded, "To my fellow citizens, we believe in free speech in the United States of America."
One woman moved towards the stage before being stopped by security, but other protesters still made their voices heard.
Only minutes later, another protester shouted expletives at the President, while still another called Bush "a fascist".
By the time Bush finished his 10-minute remarks, at least nine protesters had been escorted out of the event by law enforcement.
Although Bush did not mention the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in his final Fourth of July speech as President, he did thank the troops, while paying tribute to the author of the Declaration of Independence, who died on this day in 1826.
"We honor Jefferson’s legacy by aiding the rise of liberty in lands that do not know the blessings of freedom," Bush said. "And on this Fourth of July we pay tribute to the brave men and women who wear the uniform of the United States of America," prompting a standing ovation from the assembled crowd.
Bush congratulated the new citizens participating in the naturalization ceremony, more than 70 men and women from about 35 different countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Norway, and Burma.
"From this day forward the history of the United States will be part of your heritage, the Fourth of July will be part of your Independence Day, and I will be honored to call you a fellow American," said the President.
While in Charlottesville, Bush toured Monticello with Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, a Democrat. Early in the afternoon, Bush returned to the White House to celebrate Independence Day, a holiday which falls right at the start of his birthday weekend.
"Thomas Jefferson once said he’d rather celebrate the Fourth of July than his own birthday," said Bush, who turns 62 on Sunday. "To me it’s pretty simple, the Fourth of July weekend is my birthday weekend."
Protesters also lined the President’s motorcade route, chanting "Arrest Bush" as he drove to and from the Monticello ceremony.

He can’t be taken to the Hague. The United States is not part of the Tribunal….They can throw any charge they want, but legally, they can not prosecute him. That is why he pulled U.S. out of the enrollment for the Tribunal when he first took office; he knew he was going to go to Iraq.

I watched the Bush speech in it’s entirety and it was a great speech indeed. The vile communist “protestors” had no impact and no influence. They wasted away their day in their hateful triads. The “protestors” are mere fools paid by cpusa. Have a great 4th of July Celebration of our country.

Yes, good for the protesters that is what We as a country are about. But, we have to keep in mind that we have troops that died and we can not go about making them feel their lives are a waste.
Posted by: tito | July 4, 2008, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm
All, maybe you have not learned they make of the American political system. First, a president has limited powers. You can also thank Congress for this war. Second, presidents have advisers; he/she can only do what their team advises them on. Then we have the cabinet etc. I honestly can not blame Bush for everything. I live in Texas and when he was a governor Texas was doing quite well actually. Crime was low, the economy was booming and many had jobs. I think his people in the White House mis-led him as well. General Collin Powell and the Pentagon to name a few.

But it is ok for protesters for abortion to have huge posterboard size pictures of aborted fetus’s and to protest outside of our junior high schools and down the main streets in town to make sure all children can see a sight as gory as this??? What I get from this is that it is ok for bush to have the privacy to give his speech, but it is not alright for our children to have the same privacy given to them when they go to school or even walking to a store or friends!! if our children cannot be protected than our president has no right wanting to be!

I belive OBAMA will be far worst than Bush every was. McCain is not Bush. He is his own man. He speaks his own mind. OBAMA reads from teleprompters what other people write. He is not his own man. He has sold his soul for money and votes.

Hey DemocratNoMore2,
allowing that liar to speak has gotten us into this mess, so how about we let those brave Americans speak up and help us get out of the Bush fiasco? It takes standing up and telling the President that he and his cronies are liars and a criminals, it got this discussion going, it got the truth out, and besides that it allowed Jefferson to stop rolling in his grave. He would have yelled the same things, in anger, at what Bush has done to the noble constitution he wrote for us, they raped it, and need to hear about it…

That’s the protester’s rights in this nation which is what we’re celebrating today. However, if the tables were turned – as they are on many college campuses around the nation, I doubt that those on the left would be as accommodating. There motto might be “My rights are sacred (freedom of speech, etc.), but where I’m from you don’t have any rights that I need to honor!” E Pluribus Unum everyone!

Matter of fact, Jefferson wrote that all freedom of speech should be allowed– EXCEPT for anyone lying so as to get us into war. You know why he wrote that? Because he knew the Bush-type weasels were coming to have their war-profiteering party. Now, I follow my founding father, and he said those guys should go to prison for lying us into a war. By the way, I knew they were liars from day one, and hated them for it, hated them because I saw this all coming years back before we attacked Iraq.

I was not in Monticello, but I was along the road that the motorcade went by. The people who made it in said that Bush was visably shaken when he was trying to finish his speech. He should feel shaken up. The ironic part is he was at Jefferson’s home and it was Jefferson that once wrote, “God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion.
The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is
wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts
they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions,
it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. …
And what country can preserve its liberties, if it’s rulers are not
warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of
resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as
to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost
in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from
time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
It is its natural manure.” I rest my case!

Dantheguy9, the only thing wrong with your idea is that we should be ready to fight “right wing evil” AND left wing evil. America needs MODERATES. SOME of us are fed-up with the constant tug-of-war between the far right (“theocons”) and the far left Socialists.
Even Obama is suddenly trying to come across as a moderate, starting to abandon his Marxist positions. And McCain doesn’t seem to know WHERE he stands on almost anything.
America just MIGHT end up with a moderate President by default.

It takes a wing nut to believe that any president sends men into action knowing what the outcome will be. Bill Clinton didn’t allow thugs to drag a soldier through Somalia’s streets on purpose. Can it not be believed that a man can do what he believes to be right and wind up with some awful consequences? If freedom and justice end up being the endgame in Iraq, will it be worth the price paid? I can’t say. I do know that 232 years ago some men thought that freedom was worth a high price in blood on the ground we now protest on.

Tina.
FREE SPEECH, FOR WHOM? ACCORDING TO MANY OF THE OBAMA NUT CASES ON THIS SITE FREE SPEECH IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO AGREE WITH THEM. IT’S NOT JUST BUSH. EVER NOTICE HOW OFTEN CONSERVATIVE SPEAKERS GET SHOUTED DOWN AT OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES – WHICH ARE SUPPOSED TO BE INSTITUTIONS OF THOUGHT AND UNDERSTANDING. THESE UNIVERSITIES DO NOTHING, ENCOURAGING THESE PIECES OF WORK TO SPEW THEIR HATE ELSEWHERE AS IN TODAY’S PROTEST.
Posted by: Temagami | July 4, 2008, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
Rhys – I hope Bush gets heckled everywhere he goes for choosing to invade Iraq without regards to the welfare of civilians in Iraq or our troops. As a Ron Paul supporter, I know that you have to get involved in civil disobedience where the cameras are rolling in order for your voices to be heard. This is a fact.
Posted by: Sally | July 4, 2008, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
Philip… that is SO typical of today’s generation…
Anyone who disagrees with you is “stupid”, right?
Well… surprise… I don’t think ANYONE is stupid just because he/she thinks differently about an issue.
You sound like the type who WOULD interrupt a speech, denying the speaker a right to say what he believes, even if you disagree with it.
This is NOT the country in which I grew up, but I really don’t know why I care; I’ll be gone soon. Aren’t you glad?
Posted by: Rhys | July 4, 2008, 6:07 pm 6:07 pm
I will receive some criticism for this but here goes.
Regardless of what I do think of Bush, he is the President. The Office of President does deserve respect. These folks did not show the Office that respect. Bush only has about 6 more months to go. Let’s try to show the Office some respect.
Posted by: Beto | July 4, 2008, 6:08 pm 6:08 pm
Beto – Respect for Bush. He has made a mockery of the office and so did all the congress folks and senators that gave him sole power to go to war. These protesters are getting a message out which Bush seems to not be getting, especially with regards to Iran. Active duty gave Ron Paul the most money for a reason.
Posted by: Sally | July 4, 2008, 6:11 pm 6:11 pm
I agree with those that object to what the protestors did at Bush’s speech. However, I remember the start of the protestors that objected to the Vietnam incident. Are we starting all over? It wasn’t pleasant when our military came home from that situation. Also, I watched a program showing that the christians in Irag are either being murdered or leaving their homes for fear of their lives in Irag. They said it was better when Sadam was the ruler. What’s the real story in Irag?
Posted by: Don | July 4, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm
Beto, you will be outnumbered and called stupid for supporting Bush’s right to free speech.
One universal truth in today’s politics is that if you have an opposing view, you WILL be insulted (by EITHER side).
Too many people don’t even know what a debate is; they think it means simply shouting insults at the other person.
Posted by: Rhys | July 4, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm
Its funny thought all you on here bashing bush and rep. The dems keep voting to send more money to IRAQ every year. Does this sound familiar: In 06′ we(the DEM) will bring our government back to where it needs to be? What a JOKE. Also, if McCain is so bad and Obama is the Savior why is Obama only winning in the Polls by like 5%. I think that is kind of funny. If he his so good and the majority of people want a change I would think Obama would be up by 25% of the vote. The lead says alot about the DEM candidate doesnt it.
Posted by: tim | July 4, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm
Incredible and somehow predictable. The CNN video footage showing the protesters is GONE, and now all they have is a short news piece about Bush swearing in some new citizens. They make no mention of Americans rattling him. Isn’t that sad that we only got the real news for a few minutes before they remove it? Political pressure to reshape the American consciousness, and that is how they shaped American consciousness into war in the first place. Doesn’t our mainstream media suck for backing off of the real news story behind his Monticello speech?
Posted by: Arthur | July 4, 2008, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm
Edward – Well said. The protest are necessary where the cameras are for one thing. They are also necessary because Bush doesn’t get it with regards to his belligerence towards Iran.
Posted by: Sally | July 4, 2008, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm
Tim, rather it says a lot about how the media manipulates your reality. You have no idea because you live behind the electronic curtain, while some of us live outside it and can see through it. The U.S. media is more different than the rest of the media around the world, it creates a virtual reality that you believe is real, and that is why 98% of the people outside U.S. borders would like to see McCain go down in flames, while it’s “reeaally close” behind the electronic curtain. Prove me wrong– you cannot, because I am right.
Posted by: Philip J | July 4, 2008, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

You don’t get it. I Don’t watch TV news, but CNN is like most of the other networks – IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA – THE REASON THEY CUT THE PROTESTERS IS BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE THEM OUT AS THE FOOLS THEY ARE, AND…. THAT WOULD REFLECT POORLY ON OBAMA.
Posted by: Jimbo | July 4, 2008, 6:23 pm 6:23 pm
Rhys – You are losing it. Iran as far as UN weapons inspectors are concerned, is not developing weapons grade material. They are also surrounded by people that hate them, some with nukes. They are also constantly badgered by the US whom has nukes as well and talks of invasion. Our beef is that they support Hamas and Hezbollah, two groups that it could be argued have legitimacy, because of Israeli actions. I am not to worried about having to read the Quran, although Europe should clamp down on immigration.

Some of you, Beto, Tina, Rhys– are making the same argument that has to do with being rude or being disrespectful to some holy OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY. Look, you would be bowing down to the office if Satan himself were occupying it (which doesn’t seem far from the case). NO, true patriotic Americans who understand our founding fathers cannot agree to showing respect for some holy office, respect is something a president should earn from leading the nation with wisdom, real courage (not the “let’s roll” bravado bullshit), and honesty to the American people who actually rule OVER him. If he failed miserably, rather if he deceived Americans and betrayed that office miserably, then by God let us speak up and let him know our extreme displeasure. You choose to disagree in some back parlour, whatever, but if everyone did that then to hell with democracy.
Posted by: Philip J | July 4, 2008, 6:26 pm 6:26 pm
Rhys, I understand your plea for a more civil tone, and most of us are capable of doing better. I will say that the outrageous ad hominem attacks and blatant lies and smears are mostly coming from Bush/McCain supporters. And when I see that stuff I have a hard time containing my outrage. I AM surprised that McCain isn’t trailing by a larger margin, and as someone mentioned, that DOES say something about how comfortable people are with either candidate. But in the end, I feel confident that the haters supporting the right wing will fail to hoodwink enough people this time around. Maybe only by 5%, but I’ll take it any way I can get it.

Bush and every single member of his administration deserve to be publicly and relentlessly rebuked at every single public appearance until the day they stand trial for their egregious crimes against the constitution and this country. They are traitors to the constitution and criminals who continue believe-and assert in legal proceedings–that they stand above the law. Until such time as they answer for their crimes, they should be aggressively and visibly humiliated in every public venue–precisely because it is in the public square that they have used the “bully pulpit” to spread their lies, deceit, and propaganda–propaganda aimed not against the enemy, but against American itself. The megaphone Bush hoisted with such hypocrisy on the rubble of 9/11 is finally amplifying a different message: it is now a national clarion call to action against their delusional view of Pax Americana–an empire of self-satisfied bullies who create their own “realities” and distort beyond recognition the principles upon which we stand as a nation. As the Bush administration has broken faith with America, we owe them neither respect nor loyalty. America deserves more than a president that plays its people for fools. Good riddance in 09 to the most damaging and morally corrupt presidency in this country’s history. We shall not forget, Mr. President: you have dishonored your country, American people, and the Office of the President. On this July 4 we vow to return America to greatness, and we repudiate the false and dangerous vision you stubbornly foist upon us every time you’re given a microphone.

It’s nice to see that the “hope and change” crowd believes that respect is due only to them. The President and the ceremony to swear in new citizens ought to have been respected. Protesting his motorcade is fine but marring the event just shows only self-regard and disregard to all else.
Posted by: smartprimate | July 4, 2008, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm
wow, well said cameotoo. They were playing “God bless America” on my TV in the Dodgers game when I read it…it was so perfect. In contrast to your well-reasoned post, we have LADNARC representing the right wing, leveling a baseless accusation and some name calling. The contrast between what we need and what we’ve had in this country couldn’t be clearer. Thank you both for illustrating this.
Posted by: Dantheguy9 | July 4, 2008, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm
smartprimate – Respect is initially there. However, when a leader chooses policies that kill tons of people and bankrupt our country, protests become necessary and beneficial. This guy should be ousted, and anyone that talks of war with Iran should be removed as well. For you republicans, we simply can’t afford another war. We can’t even afford the ones we are in now. Didn’t Ron Paul teach you anything?
Posted by: Sally | July 4, 2008, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm
The right to protest is a right. But to have the audacity to go ruin an event that is the highlight of the new citizens’ lives is disrespectful, juvenile, selfish, self absorbing, ignorant. They probably sang the Black nactional athem, joined up with Phelps to shout “fags” at a military funeral, and threw fake blood on the 7-year old child of a construction company supervisor who was hired to build an abortion clinic to get up their courage. I hope their counterparts with differing views violate their weddings, the deaths of their parents and births of their children, and every important event in their lives. I am grateful for the new citizens and all of the legal and hard work they went through to achieve their day. I’m sure that they will be far, far more productive to their country than the clowns. And my sincere thanks to my sons who are eating sand for the umpteenth time to protect their rights to be total idiots.

Smartprimate – I normally would agree, but this president has shown disregard in spades; he’s rebuked the constitution and claimed to be above all of the laws that govern nations and people. If he wanted respect he should have respected the office himself; by spitting on it, he’s invited the kind of disrespect you saw today. Yes, it was disrespectful. Yes, I feel something for the people involved in the ceremony. But no, I don’t wish to seem him appear in public anywhere without someone calling him out for his crimes.

However, I do not blame them and feel sympathy for them, as they are being misled by lying warmongers who do not have the courage of your sons. Nevertheless, you would do well to go to the next place where Bush will speak, and yell at him for lying and putting your sons lives at risk. I just don’t understand how you can side with the guy who has done this evil thing to your sons. I suggest you read the writings of Thomas Jefferson and wake up. He warned you that our leaders would do this, and he told you what to do in the event that they did it: Go to the next place they stand to read their crap speeches and call them liars, thieves and villains, run them from office any and every way you can, tell them to go and fight themselves so your sons can come home.
Posted by: Philip J | July 4, 2008, 6:47 pm 6:47 pm
Skyebeader, sorry but I must write a few more thoughts as they seem important because there are many Americans who think as you do. There is a big difference between a just war and a war we started for a lot of wrong reasons. Your words could have and certainly were written by some German father whose son fought for the Nazis. I understand that father’s sense of pride and anger that his sons were in a war, but do you think his sons should have followed Hitler and fought because of lies Hitler told his German countrymen? And was the German who risked prison for speaking against Hitler a clown? Or was he a man who had the courage of his convictions, knew he would go to jail, but decided he had to speak out for his nation’s sake? I assure you those protesters went to jail and were otherwise harrassed for interrupting the holy president liar’s speech, and I thank them for that. We need more citixens like them and less of the type who proudly send their sons off to a twisted and unjust war and then think they can take the moral higher ground. Sorry, but it’s harder to have heroes when they are invaders, which is something the Germans learned.

No American(?)Patriot, you made the same mistake that millions have: you confuse what constitutes “USA”. You do not distinguish between the American people and the American government. Unfortunately, they are often at odds with each other because the government does not do what is in the interest of we the people. So it is a bit “rightist weirdo” to think that the American people and the American government are one and the same thing.
That is the big mistake that most “patriots” make, they back the government and think they are backing its citizens, when in fact they are often harming the citizens by backing a bad government, no questions asked.

The army would teach you that, and the church would teach you the same about the pope, but in reality you have been institutionalized and have lost your bearings on what should deserve your respect. Someone here pointed out that if Satan himself occupied some position, then you are supposed to respect his position as the Grand Pubah of the Third Division? You go ahead and bow down, but I am not and never will be Institution Man. Too many of my countrymen have become institutionalized, and I hope one day I am not tortured by them for refusing to bow down to anything but the sanctity of the individualism that our founding fathers taught us is the only worthy office of respect.

I just re-read the Declaration of Independence again today.
It is frightening to see how many of the grievances our founding fathers had with the King of England that are EXACTLY similar to what Bush has done to America in the past eight years.
I would suggest ALL Americans…but particularly Republicans…read the Declaration of Independence.

The aftermath of 911 and the decisions Bush made have caused. An unncessary invasion and war of a sovereign Iraq. Which disrupted the world oil supply. We are trillions in debt, our military overstretched, extremely high gas and food prices, job slowdowns with millions of workers fired or laid off. With job prospects getting worse not better. Corruption is rampant throughout of federal government, our civil rights and the constitution spit on. Average americans cannot count on their government to work for them (Katrina, Midwest floods etc). Bush and McCain fight the new G.I. Bill for U.S. soldier in Iraq only to support it when it has a veto proof majority. Bush ignores congress’ request for documents to investigate corruption. Bush deletes emails that would be helpful in the investigation. I don’t recognize my country anymore. So the question is. Who won after 911 America or the terrorist?

I am leaving this discussion and I am sure several of you will be relieved. I got something interesting from it. I can see how those who are for the war and Bush think. They think in nice-sounding platitudes, if they think at all, they seem angry at “leftie” ideas which is pretty much any thought that is against the President and the War, they have an inclination toward a fascist mentality (shoot them, beat them, make them suffer for “unpatriotic” talk), they tend to go for ad hominum attacks rather than critical thinking and serious discussion, they believe “terorists” have surrounded us though they can’t tell you where the U.S. borders are exactly, they believe what the evening news tells them and are grateful to be told who the enemy currently is, they believe in blind respect for positions and ceremonies, love the rituals and symbols but have lost all understanding as to what they actually mean. Ok, I now understand my enemy, which is blind ignorance, and at least know what to expect from so many of my fellow Americans. Then again, there are those whgo just read this and whole-heartedly agreed with everything I have written, and they are my American family whom I will indeed lay down my life for, if need be. Happy Independence Day, please contemplate what it means to be independent.

Phillip J – I didn’t not see your second post when I responded to your first, but I think that my first response might have answered a lot for you. My family has been career military for decades and did not begin their journeys under the current president, whom I did not vote for either time, btw. I think that you are entirely misinterpreting my consternation. I am totally and fully in support of protest. I did it myself after my own brother was killed in ‘Nam. However, I never rained my protests on the sunshine of another’s personal, prideful event. They could have done everything that they did and more (in my opinion, they need to watch some films of how we did it in the ’60s, they put on a pretty weak display) on the motorcade path, before the speech began, after it was over. They can do it at a White House Lawn address with just reporters and invited guests in the audience. They can do it in the chambers on Capitol Hill. Trust me, they will be televised just as they have been today. But, to go out an ruin something like the swearing in of new citizens who have followed our laws, studied our history, met every demand made of them to achieve their dream of being a U.S. Citizen is just cheap. The protesters thought of no one but themselves and their seconds of fame. They could care less about a lifetime of damage they did to 70+ people who were swelling with pride. I do not disagree with their protest, I do not disagree with their message, I disagree with their complete, total disregard of their fellow man. Who upon taking that oath, are exactly as equal as they are and should have been shown the respect that they earned. All of the pink babies looked like they got it for free for being popped out here.

I’m not even going to dive into this ridiculous argument. Both parties have made bad decisions. Its one thing to protest against the president. But these protests at this 4th of July speech are just plain rude and uncalled for. I dont care who is president Republican or Democrat, they still deserve some respect. Even George Bush! You protesters should be ashamed. There are so many people on this forum that hate Bush, McCain and Obama. (you get to look forward to another 4-8 years of complaining) LOL…I am still laughing at some of these WAY left wing comments.

You’d think after eight years of endless incompetence and failure with their hero Bush Junior…they’d be man enough to have some humility…or at least crawl into a hole and hide.
But like all good repuglicans, they’re too impressed with the sound of their own voice to realize NOBODY in America gives a rat’sass what they think anymore.
I’m off to barbecue, beer, and fireworks. Have a GREAT fourth.

I agree with the protesters. Bush is more likely to be a terrorist rather than all the others he points his fingers towards. Plus, when he does point his finger to blame, three fingers point back at him, which proves that he guilty of terrorism.

“I sure wish these people would stop thinking they have to die for my freedom” I can guarantee you that my spouse wasn’t thinking one whit about dying for you upon taking the first oath. It was all about doing things like building runways on godforbidden two-mile stretches of coral attolls in 130+ degree heat so that the real “big birds” could take off and hit anything remotely thinking of coming our way. It was about building hospitals and liveable tent cities for innocent victims of typhoons, hurricanes, and, yes, war. It was about keeping runways open at -50 so that American fishermen in the Bering sea could do their jobs but be taken for treatment if they were injured while working to feed the world. While fighting is a trained-for, sideline job which they do very, very well, my sons went in to do similar things. The fact that they have guarded Gitmo, cleaned NO, and are eating sand instead of hotdogs is just part of the jobs that they willingly, voluntarily, and continually do through their own, adult choices. BTW, if they wake up with an attitude like you have one day and decide to not do their jobs, they go to jail. A little bit different than the world you live in. If I had to weigh the group of you together, I know who’d be under the bus. Fortunately for you, it is so crowded under there, that you would just be able to walk away and go back into the world you choose. Do not denigrate others for their choices. Again, your choice counts, but the military who have made their choices do not. Obama standards and logic do not work. Stop trying.

Though most people think that Mr. Bush has been a poor leader, and perhaps an untrustworthy one also, it may be worthwhile to remember that he has lead America through some of its darkest days. One wonders if any President would have or could have handled the situation in a different or better manner. History will judge him better then we can. I feel somewhat disturbed by the protesters action at this event because it embarrassed not only the president but the many people who had made a commitment to something, that being to become a citizen of the U.S. Their moment of acheivement and they themselves should have been given more respect then what the protesters did. If Mr. Bush is a “war criminal” and he may well be, pursue that in courts of law………..

Skybeader, I understand where you are coming from, the loyal army family of many generations, willing to suffer for their belief that they are doing good in the world, who have always believed in duty, honor and respect, have passed those values on to their children. You are the guys this country needs when the going gets tough.
You know, the only problem is that when a gang of criminals takes over the U.S. Government, you guys follow orders (as is your job) and you end up causing bad things like dead civilians, occupations and a bad name for America– which is not your fault, but the sociopathic leaders who lie to Americans so as to ship you off to war. There is a difficult line between duty and conscience that every solider must surely face. I think duty is always set above conscience in military life, and that is why you are institutionalized, you have sacrificed your sense of individualism for the nation, but that sacrifice should come from conscience and not duty. You can end up yelling “Yes Sir!” and following orders straight to hell.

GWBush has been the worst president ever. He’s took the U.S. from a surplus into debt, started a ongoing losing war, promoted policies that ruin the environment, weakened the U.S. economy, and lied to the American people. I’m glad the protestors were there. Bush needs to step down before he causes the U.S. more damage.
Posted by: Mike | July 4, 2008, 8:47 pm 8:47 pm
Duty traces etymologically back to the idea of “due” or debt, whereas conscience has its roots in the idea of awareness or knowledge. Soldiers are taught to act out of duty, a sense of owing or debt. Here’s the thing, though. If a soldier does not think about why he is killing, and obeys orders out of duty, then it will result in one of two things. Either he will lose conscience and be akin to a machine, which will make life not worth living since he will feel as though he has lost his soul, or he will become a nihilist who is simply evil and sadistic. That is why we see suicides and atrocities coming out of this war, suicides are the depressed soldiers who have killed and lost their souls, atrocities are from the nihilists who learn to enjoy raping and pillaging.
World War II soldiers, who fought what we call a “just war” were in possession of their conscience when they fought, they knew they were performing their duty truly to save the free world. I do not believe that is the case with Iraq, where many soldiers quickly come to understand that they are not in a “just war” which destroys morale, and no amount of “sense of duty” can overcome a corrupt and senseless war, which is what soldiers figure out they are in engaged in. They learn that the real war and the one on TV are radically different. I am curious, what do you think of that?
Posted by: Roland | July 4, 2008, 8:56 pm 8:56 pm
“Bush will not allow photos of flag draped caskets of our fallen soldiers returning who paid the utimate price for this country and his ill advised invasion. Do you have any outrage over that?”
You by-God-better-believe I have outrage over that. That law was put into effect LONG before Bush got into ANY office by families exactly like MINE who say “YOU HAVE NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO SEE MINE UNLESS I SAY THAT YOU DO – AND I SAY THAT YOU DO NOT UNBDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. THEIR DEATHS ARE PERSONAL TO ME AND MINE, AND ARE OF NO BUSINESS OF YOURS!!!!!!” YCLTUYK.

It is a shame that these protesters were so self-centered to interrupt one of the most important days of these new citizens lives. This was not the time nor place for them to protest, but to respect the hardwork that our new citizens had to put in to come to the US and enjoy the freedoms and protections that the protesters take for granted. This is exactly the place for such a protest for a president who has gone against the grain of the will of the people by continuing a ware that two thirds of the people of the country deplore. Barack Obama said it best. People who stand against these such acts of the government are the true partiots.
Love your country ALL THE TIME…. Praise the government when it deserves to be praised.

Not to worry. President Hussein Obama will just use his rhetorical charms on our enemies and then all our problems will vanish and birds will sing and all will be right with the world. American will only stand on the right side of every issue and messy moral dilemmas will never happen again. God will be frustrated because there will be no more people who want to go to heaven after Obama has created one on earth.

Bush is a war criminal who went to Iraq with the primary purpose of taking their oil fields. Iraq had no links to 9/11, posed no threat to America in 2003.
At some point in time, America will have to put Bush on trial for the murders of a million Iraqis and over 4100 US troops.

Omentum – why would they walk away? They were mortified by something that they did not cause or deserve? Could you please quote a link to where Obama said that new U.S. citizens should be humiliated and that their humiliaters should be rewarded? I knew that the Senator’s family were and are not citizens, but I am very curious to see where he is actively promoting that new citizens should be regaled. Makes me wonder what he will do to original citizens. TIA

Mortified. Are you kidding me? The protests were not directed toward them. And they knew that. They would have to have been citizens of MARS to not know how inept and how low this president’s approval ratings. No free pass for anyone … including the decider. Obama is definitely not getting a free pass. Just look at all the asinine comments on this blog about him and his family.
If they new citizens don’t like this country, because of free speech they can go back to whatever country they came from.

America has made no move whatsoever to take Iraqi oil. Bush went into Iraq to take out an enemy and hoped to forge a democracy in the middle east. Hussein repeatly kicking out weapons inspectors and controlling their movements. Maybe when Bush delivered his ultimatum for unconditional inspections, those morons should have taken him seriously.

I wouldnt hesitate to say that there are very few men (or Hillary) who would have liked to have been President after 9/11. It had to be a difficult task to make descisions on what to do to protect our nation immediately that day.
I wonder do we, as Americans, remember that destructive and deadly day? When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor our country was much different for many years regarding the Japanese people. However, today we have people crying and whining that we are at war for the wrong reasons. Nobody seems to remember those people who died in the worst attack against American civilians on American soil. What do those families say today? Are they forgiving towards those who caused their pain or are they thankful that someone stood up and defended the lives of those they loved? Osama ties are not just to Afganistan, they are world wide, they are even dwelling amoung us today….in America.

Bush has done nothing but make change America’s protrayal. I mean, when I went to visit other countries all over the world, I was actually ashamed to say I’m from America, because people take it as a bad thing. And kids would tease others by saying “you’re American, go follow Bush’s steps!” So, Bush really messed up the American reputation.

McCain does not have the judgment and patience to lead America. He is an ill-informed, myopic, close-minded man who is easily swayed by the bigoted religious right. Check out the result of his BRILLIANT support of the “Surge”, not to mention the fatally wrong idea to go to war with Iraq in the first place, and not actually go after the 9/11 terrorists. Check the facts at the below link:

I wonder how many men (or Hillary) would have liked to have been President on 9/11? I remember telling my husband that day that I would not want to be in Bushs’ shoes and that that day would be the downfall of his Presidency. It appears to be true. It must have been hard know the decisions to make that day to protect our country….immediately.
My Dad was in World War II and I can remember him talking about how things were in America after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He said you dare not even own a Japanese automobile..it just wasn’t accepted for the hatred toward that group of people was strong. We exist today where just a few years ago the worst attack ever on American civilians occured. Now, the majority of our society seems to forget that day occured. The faces of the people, the crying, the shock, and the sadness. We, as a people, wanted to strike back. Now, we are not happy with the stand that was taken. The defense of our country against the web of Obama’s network is not appreciated. Do we not see that this web is world wide, not just in Afganistan? This web even spreads within our own boarders, here with us, silently, in the United States.
What would the families of the dead of 9/11 say? Should we, as a nation, defend their memory throughout the world? Should we stomp out terrorism on all levels? Who would we have been statisfied with to make the descisions at that point in time? ANYONE? I don’t believe anyone could have really done right in the eyes of the American people.

o2baladyvol,
The left is not concerned with protecting this country. If you read some of their hate-filled sites, you will discover that most of them support the terrorists. Their only goal is to transform this country into another failed totalitarian society.
Your thoughts were right on target. The ironic point of the left’s position is, it is their policies and belief systems, or lack of, that the jihadists detest. They will be the first hunted down and slaughtered. Hitler used his useful idiots much in the same way and slaughtered them when they lost their value to him. It will be a sad and dangerous day for the world if this group of people ever gain control of our government.

NOMORE….I’m curious as to why you’re as interested in politics as you are at such an early age? Where do you form your opinions from? Though I disagree with your views, I think it’s refreshing that a kid your age is thinking a bit more deeply than their peers seem to be.

Bush at Monticello is an abomination. Bush repeatedly spits on the Constitution. He’s done more to damage our nation in the last 7 years than any outside enemy ever could.

Who says I was angry? Thank you for that information, but I believe that school taught us this in the first year of high school. Although, I’m pretty sure your child would find it useful in a couple years, when she/he matures.

Todd, you are very right. Out of all the history my 16 year old has taken, the true meaning of the “the history” of this country has never been taught. We are slowly loosing our true heritage.
Do you think anyone knows the sacrifice of the 50 something men who signed our Declaration of Independence this day, so many years ago? They died in poverty, alone, sought after, and killed. All of this was because of a belief of FREEDOM. Are we a dedicated nation following in that belief today? I would say not. Sacrifice means nothing to those who are spoiled and let others sacrifice in their stead.

It is just amazing that all those ditto heads who blame Bush for war and say he should be impeached don’t have a clue that a bunch of Democrats, including Hillary, voted for the war. Congress declares war, not the president so if anyone should go to jail it should be those Democrats who voted for it.
The ditto-heads don’t understand that if the USA pulls out of Iraq, then all those terrorists pouring into Iraq to fight will have won and then they will come to the USA to finish winning their war. Their recruitment will go way up because the will have won in Iraq by virtue of the fact that the American military there gave up and left without finishing the job.
Who ever pulls the US troops out of Iraq before the job is finished is promoting quitting and losing.
Ditto-heads blame the President for declaring war, which Congress did. Ditto-heads want to quit and lose. It shows what total losers they are.

Sorry to all I offensed during this conservation. I have to leave, hope you accept it. I was hoping we’d turn out okay. I’m not nerd, but I take great interest in politics. (in case you’re wondering why someone my age is here.) (O and whoever said they didn’t want me to crash a car into a building, because I’m angry with you, I’m not that stupid. Plus I’m to young to have a permit.) Happy 332nd birthday America! Peace to all.

NOMORE…..I think that you should understand that politics is a very rough game, not just on blogs, but for real. Most of those involved in it professionally (which I’m not btw) would rather cut your heart out than give in, metaphorically speaking, but sometimes not. The great virtue of this country is we can speak to each other in these terms and not have the government at our door-step. That right was given to us by the men and women who have fought and died to defend those ideals which is one reason I like John McCain so much. He was willing to fight and sacrifice his life, if needed and which he almost did on several occasions, for that ideal. I would guess most of the protesters today have never felt that need, but it’s their right to yell whatever they want at the most powerful person in our country without fear. John McCain among many others gave them that right.

NOMORE….keep at it, study, learn, keep an open mind to new ideas and you’ll do great….good luck! o2….I don’t think unless you have an abiding interest or have suffered through the privations that they did or that the “Greatest Generation” did, can you appreciate the hardships and sacrifices that were made. When things get too soft people take it for granted and they shouldn’t, it’s dangerous. You know, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it – a truism I believe.

Much to NOMOREBUSHS’ delight this “antique” is leaving.
Just some final thoughts on my original post…
1. Did Bush make decisions that cost him personally and professionally? I think so.
2. Do I think he thought those decisions were right for a NATION? I think so.
3. Do I think that if knowing where he’d be today he would do the same thing? I think so.
4. So I think America knows the right decision or who could make it? I think not.
5. People his name is BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA. Should we be concerned? I think so.
However, stating all that…I do not think anyone out there in the current political arena is capable or ready to give this nation the results we demand or need.

Khaled Hosseini Riverhead
FYI Congress didn’t declare war on Iraq. They authorized the president to use force if specific conditions were met. Bush said those conditions had been met, so he attacked Iraq, and has implemented an occupation of that country ever since.
Has anyone been following the oil contracts awarded to Hunt Oil of Texas by the Kurdish autonomous region. They didn’t clear this with the Iraqi government, but our state department acquiesced. So much for a centralized Iraqi government and an Iraqi national oil law. Which, by the way, grants Exxon-Mobil, Chevron, Shell, etc., non-bid contracts. Surprise, surprise.
The oil companies have effectuated a US foreign policy where our service members die and get maimed, and our treasury incurs trillions in debt (3 trillion?) so they can get sweetheart deals giving them access to Iraqi oil (3rd largest proven reserves on the planet). So, for facilitating this, Bsuh rightly deserved to be called a war criminal.

NOMORE….no, no, you miss understood. I was using an example of why we’re so blessed here, that something like that can’t happen because it does and has in other nations today and in the past. Nazi Germany for example or the former Soviet Union. They could come take you away and no-one would ever hear from you again. Actually, I think that happened frequently in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, but that’s another story.
Posted by: Todd | July 5, 2008, 1:36 am 1:36 am
todd – that still doesn’t change the fact that John McCain’s policies are very, very bad and wrong for this country. We need a new direction and the Republicans refuse to change course.

Ok NOMOREBUSH, I have to comment you have me interested yet again….
My concern is this…There are things circulating about his ties…ties that make his name detrimental, that tie him to the thoughts of the self declared enemy, Osama Bin Ladin. There is no racism, their is concern for the lack of response by the party who puts forward the canidate to “solve our plight”. I see pictures of Obama in Africa with ties to political terrorists. I hear that his brother is a leader of a political terrorist group. There is no sense of respect and honor for what America stands for from this man. If these anti-war hippies werent so lucky to live here, they would be lucky to be alive to do anything. There will always be wars and always be soldiers, sailors and airmen dying in them. o2baladyvol, there’s no story about Obama’s “brother” being linked to terrorists. You’re referrring to a completely discredited story circulated by Limbaugh types and right wing disinformation sites regarding Raila Odinga, current Kenyan prime minister. Odinga claims to be Obama’s cousin but no one else thinks that’s true. If you are worried about such a story, you can easily check it out to see if it’s true. This is 2008. The Internet is a wonderful thing. I think it’s every American’s duty to check up on the candidates. I have some problems with Obama and lots of problems with McCain, but I’m so outraged at the Bush traitors it’s sometimes tough to be fair to McCain. I’m fairly sure I’ll vote for Obama, but I’ll try to give McCain a fair hearing between now and Nov. You should do the same for Obama, including CHECKing stores before you repeat them as if they were fact.
Posted by: Dantheguy9 | July 5, 2008, 3:01 am 3:01 am
Optimus, I’m critical of the Bush administration, but I hope I’ve never devalued or disrespected the people who serve this country in uniform. All too often it’s easy to confuse the two. I would just ask you to consider that there are a lot of people who are happy and proud to pay their taxes for a competent military which can protect us when necessary, but the rights you/they fight for include the right – actually the obligation – to speak out when power is being abused at the top. This isn’t a reflection on the fine people doing the job they’re ordered to do, wherever or whatever it is. Is that reasonable?

What an insult this man is to everything that we hold dear. To come to the hallowed ground of Thomas Jefferson and have the temerity to add insult to injury by his vain attempt to equate his crimes to the struggle for American Independence. Yes, he and others in his administration are war criminals and should be tied as such.

Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner and maybe you should read his writings abouts the black race. Now I know he was a very intelligent man and a Founding Father, but don’t raise him to a saint-status level or whatever because he wasn’t. He didn’t pick up any gun and persoanlly going after the British, either, but he sent alot of poor colonists to die for the high ideals you have now. And only 1/3 of the colonies wanted independance.

“the pink vote or so called ladies’, disrupted McCain’s speech, they are the surrogates of Obama’s campaign. It was down right rude and discussing. No one interrupted Obama’s speech on the 4th. Now the overtly patriotic Obama with his flag pin and all is not fooling most Americans. When he stated once,’ dont’t tell me words don’t matter. ‘I have a dream.’ Just words.’ will all I can say, ‘don’t tell me that symbols don’t matter. Putting your hand over your heart when saying the Pledge. Just a symbol. Treating the Flag with reverence. Just a symbol. Wearing a flag pin. Just a symbol. Symbols do matter.’ Only for political reason did these symbols matter to Obama. One more game played by Obama. to get votes.

Its funny that Cons like to point out the low approval rating for Congress versus Bush. The only reason the Congress has such a low approval rating is that Nancy Pelosi refuses to begin impeachment procedings against the war criminal and Constitutional violator in the White House.
As for a lack of civility, Mr. “Citizen”, how civil is it to torture people and start wars for no reason? G.W. Bush is the definition of uncivil.

Craig- one more thing. George Washington said we should not have political parties too. He said they would destroy or country. You can quote all you want
Posted by: tim | July 5, 2008, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm
Tim – I think it’s reasonable to assume that the same president who’s been violating our constitutional rights would continue to do this, and thus the establishment of a secret police force is worrisome. And yes, quotes are fun but only useful if their wisdom is useful. When Madison warns of too much power being in the hands of any single branch, his remarks are very applicable in these days of Bush’s executive power grab.

It’s a kick. Every election, yes every election the opposing party screams for change. Why do we always want change, no matter which party is in power. What change ? No more war ? There will always be wars, and rumors of wars, so get over it and just deal with it. That’s the real world. So if Obama is elected, he’ll pull all the troops out out of Iraq ? Well that’ll be real smart, then Iraq will end up right back similar to what it was, and everything we fought for, will have been for nothing. So yes, go ahead and scream and yell at our President, like the fools you are. But don’t forget, if Obama get’s elected, you must scream and yell at him too, when he does something stupid, and he will. For God’s sake, just be thankful that Hillary is out of the running.

Dantheguy9- your right about quotes? Why didnt you comment on the one about George Washington. You don’t think Washington had some wisdom in that qoute. I personally have a problem with people spewing our constitutional rights being violated. I dont see that. Airport security searching my bags? Wiretap my phone if people think I am talking to someone of interest? How are my rights being violated like you say they are.
Posted by: tim | July 6, 2008, 6:35 pm 6:35 pm
Tim – I dunno, I think it would be obvious when I said that quotes are fine if their wisdom is useful. I don’t think Washington’s quote is particularly wise, since we’ve had political parties all along and we’re still going.
As far as violating our constitutional rights, you’re kidding, right? Just in case you’re actually serious: It’s fine if you don’t have a problem with illegal wiretapping, but I do. That was a violation of the 4th Amendment, as are other provisions of the “patriot act”. He’s also stomped on the equal protection clause (14th amendment) by extending tours of duty, authorizing or condoning the disenfranchisement of voters, refusing to fund NCLB, and ignoring the Katrina victims. Direct violations of constitutional provisions, including criminal violations, would include lying to Congress and the American people on multiple occasions; “signing statements” in which he declares that he doesn’t have to obey the laws Congress enacts; committing America to a war without a declaration; attempting to circumvent the treaty process; and putting americans in jeopardy by abrogating the Geneva Convention and about a dozen other international agreements and treaties. These are clear violations, but in my opinion you can also add permitting his VP to shop energy policy to the highest industry bidders; condoning the traitorous exposure of a CIA agent; appointing political hacks to the bench in violation of his constitutional trust; selling foreign policy to Carlyle and Halliburton; selling healthcare legislation to the pharmaceutical industry; and violating the establishment clause in a thousand ways, but in just one example, placing orphaned Muslim Indonesian children with only Christian families. I don’t really have time to go on, but yeah, it’s just a little bit more serious than searching my duffelbag at the airport
