Rove Urges Abortion Foes into Battle

ABC’s Lisa Chinn reports: Former presidential aide Karl Rove asked abortion opponents to "talk to the undecideds," in order to defeat Democrat Barack Obama — echoing Abraham Lincoln’s advice to the Whig Party in the election of 1844.

In a speech at the National Right to Life Committee’s 36th Annual Convention, the political strategist who led President George Bush’s two presidential campaigns, painted presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama as a  supporter of abortion rights who has "got a record on abortion that’s pretty big in a short amount of time."

Rove enumerated a number of votes Obama made in both the U.S. Senate and in the Illinois State Senate, including votes on parental notification (no), stem cell research (yes), and the nominations of conservative Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and  Samuel  Alito (no and no).

Rove argued that Obama’s attempts to reach out to the "values and pro-life leaders" was an attempt to distance himself from "a record way out in the fringe," but that "his actions over the years are far more important than any reassuring words he could offer in any private conversation.  He is pro-abortion and not pro-life."

Rove also told the audience that presumptive Republican nominee John McCain’s wife Cindy brought their adopted  daughter Bridget, from the "arms of Mother Theresa…clad only in a swaddling diaper."

The National Right to Life Committee’s Executive Director David O’Steen told the audience of about 200 people that voters who are opposed to abortion could play a critical role in this election. O’Steen said that his organizatin’s polling indicates that McCain is  trailing behind Obama because  many "don’t know his [Obama's]  position or think he’s pro-life or he’s moderate on abortion."  O’Steen claimed, "It’s hard to be more pro-abortion than Hillary Clinton, but he’s managed to do it,"

O’Steen went on to quote an interview that Obama gave to Relevant, a magazine for young Christians,  earlier this week.    Asked about his position on  the late term abortion procedure some call partial birth abortion, Obama said, "I have repeatedly said that I think it’s entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exeption for the health of the mother."   But O’Steen questioned the Democrat’s sincerity in the position, calling it "duplicitous."

It was not the only section of the Relevant magazine interview with Obama that discussed abortion. In another section of the interview Obama made remarks that some see as a departure from traditional liberal positions on abortion rights law.

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. Defends Partial-birth Abortion
In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the “alarming news” that “right-wing politicians” had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls.
Michelle called partial-birth abortion “a legitimate medical procedure,” and wouldn’t supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against “cynical ploy[s]” to stop it?
As a nurse at an Illinois hospital in 1999, I discovered babies were being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms. I discovered infanticide.
Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted.
BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother’s right to “choose” stopped at her baby’s delivery.
The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002.
But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. It only passed in 2005, after Obama left.

karl rove is the devil himself. This is the same lying sob who smeared John mcCain in 2000 with the poll in New Hampshire calling and asking perspective
voters if they would be more or less likely to vote for mccain if they knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child? He was of course referring to mccains 8 yr. old adopted child from Bangladesh. But thanks to his false innuendos bush took New Hampshire because of misinformed gullible voters. Leave it to lucifer to come to you in God’s holy name.

Obama is in favor of partial birth abortion. This is sick! Obama continues to lie and talk out of both sides of his mouth. I thank God that America is waking up, Obama is being vetted, and he is losing support daily! We don’t need Obama in the White House. Thank you, America! Keep up the good work and vote against Obama!

Karl Rove represents the *screw you* philosophy.
Witness the administration’s opposition to such fundamentally moral issues as stem cell research and health insurance, for God’s sake, for all of America’s children.
Barack Obama represents the “one America” philosophy. Read, actually read some of the words from his 2004 speech:
“The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an “awesome God” in the Blue States, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”
WHICH DO YOU PREFER, A UNITED STATES of AMERICA, OR THE DIVIDED STATES OF KARL ROVE?

Hey Will,
Today is Friday. Does John McCain still say the tax cuts for the wealthy are “unconscienceable” ???
How about amnesty for illegal aliens? Does he only support amnesty on months that end with ‘e’ and ‘r’ ???
Four years ago, he called the religious bigots like Pat Robertson “agents of intollerance”. Is this his position on even or odd numbered days???

Posted by: John's conscience | July 5, 2008, 12:29 am 12:29 am

Hey everybody,
Right now, health insurance companies are regulated in the states they operate in.
But John McCain says that they should be regulated in a single state of THEIR OWN CHOOSING.
So you tell me, what kind of pro-consumer regulations will there be when the insurance companies are regulated in the state of their own choosing?
None. Nada. Zippo. Zilch. Bumkins.
Zerooooooooooo!

Posted by: John's conscience | July 5, 2008, 12:34 am 12:34 am

WHY DOES JOHN MCCAIN OPPOSE THE LILLY LEDBETTER FAIR PAY ACT?
Lilly, in case you don’t know (and every person who can read *should* know) proved in court that she had been hired for half the wages of her male coworkers.
This was illegal and still is.
Of course she didn’t KNOW this until she had been working at Goodyear for over twenty years.
The Supreme Court issued an erroneous finding overturning Lilly Ledbetter’s victory in court on the grounds that she hadn’t filed within 180 days of BEING HIRED.
But she didn’t KNOW and could not have known at the time she was hired! She only found out when, close to retirement, someone slipped the information into her mailbox.
The Democrats tried to overturn this complete REJECTION of justice with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2008, but John McCain and the rest of the soulless Republicans killed it with a fillibuster.
That’s right, the bill did not even get a straight up and down vote. Thanks to the Republicans and JOHN MCCAIN.

Hey John:
Lets see, your guy, NoBama wants to give not only drivers license to illegal aliens, but he also wants to give them health insurance paid for by you and me.
As for as taxes, your boy, NoBama wants to raise the Cap tax to 28% will virtually cut into our 401k retirement plans, create even more hardship for homeowners trying to buy and sell their houses, and will deteriorte the stock market and investing because the Cap tax will cut so deeply into dividends.
Thats ok, keep supporting this “empty” suit. He’s vetting himself and has no idea how to lead this country. Obama was, is, and always will be a loser. Do your homework, research, before you endorse and suppport an idiot like NoBama!

23.) I Have Released My State Records – LIAR, as of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.

44.) I Have Passed Bills In The U.S. Senate – LIAR, you have passed A BILL in the U.S. Senate – for Africa, which shows YOUR priorities.
45.) I Have Always Been Against Iraq – LIAR, you weren’t in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time, unlike Kucinich, who seems to be out gutting you Obama. You also seem to be stepping back from your departure date – AGAIN.
46.) I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care – LIAR, your plan leaves us all to pay the 15,000,000 who don’t have to buy it.

49.) My Wife Didn’t Mean What She Said About Pride In Country – LIAR, your wife’s words follow lock-step in the vein of Wright and Farrahkan, in relation to their contempt and hatred of America.
50.) Wal-Mart Is A Company I Wouldn’t Support – LIAR, your wife has received nearly a quater of a million dollars through Treehouse, which is connected to Wal-Mart.

Posted by: Will | July 5, 2008, 12:58 am 12:58 am

Angie, guess what, Obama’s lies continue:
51.) Treehouse Is A Small Company – LIAR, the CEO of Treehouse last year, made more than the CEO of Wal-Mart, according to public records.
52.) University Of Chicago Hospital Pay Is Fair – LIAR, your wife’s pay raise was nearly 150% her already bloated rate and the hospital is a Non-Profit Hospital, which made $100,000,000 in the last 3 years. They overcharge blacks VS whites for services, and overcharge everyone in general by 538%!
53.) I Barely Know Rezko – Only 5 Billed Hours – LIAR, you have known him for 17 years, and decided to do a real estate deal with him during a time when he was proven to be under investigation. Despite this, you divided your property and had them take off $300K before the mortgage problems started. Then Rezko’s wife buys the lot beside it that you can’t afford, saving you $625,000.
54.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly – LIAR, you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko (first $66K, then when caught lying $86K, then when caught lying again $150K and now caught lying YET AGAIN OBAMA, it’s $250k) their money when publicly called on their involvement in your campaigns.
55.) My Church Is Like Any Other Christian Church – LIAR, your church is so extreme, the pastor who married you, Rev. Wright, just got done blaming the US for 9/11 and named Louis Farrahkan their person of the year.
56.) I Disagree With My Church All The Time – LIAR, you still have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife, and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message – hatred and revenge. You donated in 2006 alone, $22,500 to the church that you so terribly disagree with. That is nearly $500 PER WEEK – that sure is disagreement, Senator Obama.
57.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko – LIAR, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Seems Mr. Auchi may have helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had millions of dollars. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.
58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright’s, that have been in videos all day, You Tube – LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said “Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did.”
59.) The Passport Invasion is a conspiracy to find dirt on me! – LIAR. Your own Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor is the CEO of the company that looked into your records. PS – You had them look into yours to hide the fact you looked into Clinton’s and McCain’s more than a year before!
60.) Rev. Meeks has nothing to do with my campaigning – LIAR. Rev. Meeks appeared in ads for your Senate Campaign, donated to you, and helped raise money, then AND NOW. PS – He also seems to despise America.

Can Karl Rove and John McCain explain in English how Abortion Rights in 2008 affect the price of milk, gas or the housing foreclosures?
How does it affect the fact that the FDA cannot function effectively because of lack of staff and other resources?
How does abortion rights affect the levies that the federal government still cannot fix?
How does abortion rights affect the poor and the hungry and those people who go to sleep at night hungry and crying because they could not give their children an adequate meal?
Karl Rove obviously think Americans are stupid. Just you wait and see how stupid they are on 04 November.

I hate the fact that people in politics even THINK they have some say in what i chose to or not to do. who cares what obama or mccain think they dont have a uterus so its not like they will ever have to make that choice.
think ahead are these pro lifers going to take on the responsibility of all these children that will end up in the states custody? what about the child abuse from those parents who do keep them but dont want them who felt trapped into having them? or the desperate women that try to do it themselves?
making abortions illegal isnt going to solve our problems its only the beginning of them.

Second of all, the majority of Americans are pro-choice. So if Americans were to vote on whether or not to overturn Roe vs Wade, the vast majority of Americans would NOT.

Abortion rights are not about abortion – it’s about a woman’s right to choose – and why is it always the men that call for banning abortions? Abortion should not be a means of birth control but should be an option a woman chooses for herself and performed in a sterile environment as provided now. People seem to forget history and what women died for when this option and the conditions nowadays wasn’t available. We went through this battle in the 70s -please don’t let males like Rove dictate to us or take away our control over our own bodies.

So Karl Rove is proving that a vote for McCain is a vote against women’s right to choose? So much for those closet Republicans in dress up who were trying to convince Democrats this would not be an issue if they were dumb enough to vote for McCain,

That’s right, Karl… Make more babies! The planet NEEDS more babies, especially the unwanted ones. Increasing the population will REALLY help solve the problem of dwindling resources.
What an idiot!

Of course, Karl Rove is going to lie, cheat and do anything he can to prevent Barack Obama from winning this fall.
When Obama takes office, the first thing he will do is repeal all vestiges of “Executive Privilege” that Karl Rove is hiding behind. Karl will then be exposed to criminal charges. As long as he can keep a Bush puppet in office, he can hide from his crimes.
Karl Rove should be in prison for what he has done. Its appalling that his comments are even being repeated in the news media. No other criminals enjoy such media exposure.

With a shortage of oil, food, and clean water, this is NOT the best time for the baby-maker promoters to make their case.
If WE don’t control our numbers, nature will, and we WON’T like it.

Obama the fraud – Who said I was voting for Obama? His platform is a spending disaster. I am writing in Paul or going with Nader or Barr. I want someone who’s interests lie with the people not themselves. Our top two choices do not impress me.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 10:30 am 10:30 am

antenian…
I was also a life-long Republican, but I surrendered my membership card right after the 2004 election, when Bush began his theocratic runaway. I also finally realized the absurdity of attacking the WRONG country (Iraq) instead of going after America’s REAL enemies in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
I don’t HATE Bush, I just think he has been a bad President, especially in his second term.
So I now consider myself an independent (and am thus registered), but I still don’t know who to vote against. There certainly isn’t a candidate I want to vote FOR.

Posted by: Rhys | July 5, 2008, 10:32 am 10:32 am

Rhys – Amen to that Rhys.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 10:32 am 10:32 am

Arguing about how Bush’s War started is a waste of time. Time machines haven’t been invented yet. We should be more concerned about how to END this no-win, goal-less war, which has already killed more than 4000 Americans and countless Iraqis. For what? Oil? We were getting more oil from Iraq when Saddam was their leader.
Instead of arguing about how we got INTO this mess, let’s find a way OUT!

Posted by: Rhys | July 5, 2008, 10:36 am 10:36 am

Obama is most lying candidate (based on lies/issues ratio) in America politics. He is also the most hypocritical candidate in American history. He may also be the most stuttered candidate in history.

Posted by: peace | July 5, 2008, 10:37 am 10:37 am

Rhys – You make some good points. I have always considered my self an environmental-conscience fiscal conservative. Seems the way to go.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 10:44 am 10:44 am

antenian… my friends have called me a “social liberal and a fiscal conservative”, so I guess we’re on the same page. I’m wondering if perhaps you graduated from high school in the same era as I did: the mid-1950′s. Much of my generation is caught in the middle between the World War 2 crowd and the so-called Baby-Boomers. I am part of the “forgotten generation” which never came to power or had any significant influence on national policy.
For this reason, I find myself in agreement with BOTH sides on many issues, but I still cannot “warm-up to” EITHER of the current candidates.

Posted by: Rhys | July 5, 2008, 10:50 am 10:50 am

Rhys – I graduated high school in the 1990s. We probably agree on most things – maybe not abortion. I believe each abortion is a tragedy, but I understand the arguments from the other side. I believe gays for the most part are born that way….just call it garriage! My concerns with our nation are more economic since that will ultimately be our undoing.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 10:54 am 10:54 am

Rhys-I almost forgot. I was for the protests against Bush when you wanted reverence for the office. Don’t want to tussle with that one again, but I respect your opinion on that one.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 10:57 am 10:57 am

Rhys – It seems you always have hardcore people on both sides of this issue. I work in the research realm so it requires me to think freely. I liked Ron Paul’s approach of community or state level say on whether abortion is permitted or not. Of course there are counter arguments on the hardship it would place on a woman having to drive to another state to get say the abortion pill. I think that the government should really be focused on reducing the national debt, stopping our militaristic foreign policy, and securing the borders. These are issues that could bring us to our knees. The focus of our politicians seems to be how best to maintain power and make lots of money with divisive issues such as abortion, global warming, and terrorism….not to say these should have some attention.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

Thinking – At least we can all agree that liberal minded folks should shift there support from criminals to babies. They don’t want to give the death penalties to mass murderers or serial child molesters, yet killing an innocent child is just fine, even in the late term stages. This issue will always be divisive, but we should work to correct the obvious things.

Posted by: antenian | July 5, 2008, 11:15 am 11:15 am

“Thinking”, you have said you are “not debating”, so I shall end what I THOUGHT was a debate with you.
antenian, I also wanted Ron Paul, probably because my personal beliefs are closely aligned with Libertarian philosophy.
Unfortunately, the Libertarians have been unable to come up with a viable candidate, although Ross Perot DID carry one state! Ron Paul is clearly a Libertarian, but thought he had a better chance by calling himself a Republican. I think he would make an excellent President, but his age is against him, just as it is with John McCain. We must face the reality of having to choose between the “leftovers” of the major parties.
My wife is waiting for breakfast, so I need to leave for now. antenian, it has been a pleasure discussing issues with you.

Posted by: Rhys | July 5, 2008, 11:22 am 11:22 am

Obama will not go to a town hall meeting style debate. Because the LIBERAL news will not be able to offer Obama a pillow and loaded questions that make Obama look like Jesus

Posted by: anttl | July 5, 2008, 11:28 am 11:28 am

@antenian
I think what we need to do is find a different way of life, one that includes more people.
Idealistic? Yes. Naive? No. What is navie is ignoring the problem.
The argument for abortion just doesn’t hold water. Yes I believe in it for the protection of the Woman’s life, but in reality it is not used that way.
I am not a liberal, People first, if that means I support a liberal bill or a conservative bill that is the way it is.
The far right, and the far left, being in power has to end

Posted by: .Strom Thurmond | July 5, 2008, 12:04 pm 12:04 pm

Karl Rove does not get it. Abortion is not going to be an issue in the next election. I am not in favor of abortion but it should be kept legal in certain circumstances. It is the economy stupid. If the US does not control recession , deficits, unemployment, unnecessary wars, the falling dollar. USA will be doomed for ever. The government spending will have to be reduced to 50% to pay off the deficit or else it will not be the foreclosure of homes any more. It will be the foreclosure of the US by creditors. Wake up America, start saving and conserving and pay of the debt.

Posted by: gjkotw01 | July 5, 2008, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

Nobody is stopping stem cell research. Bush just said he doesn’t want the GOVERNMENT to fund it. Any private enterprise can do it.
Nice try though. It’s this kind of crap that you use to fool the people into voting democrat.
Thank God it usually doesn’t work.

Posted by: Jo | July 5, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

@Jo
The government can no more demand a woman have a child than it can demand that she can not have a child.
The Republicans know this as much as I do. I am opposed to abortion, will argue against it. IE making the decision to have an abortion, but using this as a political tool is wrong on both sides.
There will be no reversal on this ever.

Karl Rove knows exactly what codewords gets the GOP Manchurian Minions into action.
Abortion
War
Religion
Guns
Supreme Court Justices
Taxes
When the minions heart these code words they loose their conscience and pull the lever for GOP regardless who the candidate is.
Fortunately some of the minions don’t like supporting gwb who has a 28 percent approval rating and someone who is trying to win his third term

Too bad that the opposition to the “Somali Swing King” is worse than the one he condemns…

One of the few issues where Obama is right, but an insignificant issue when Democrats control congress.

Posted by: Giovanni | July 6, 2008, 10:11 am 10:11 am

Insignificant because of Roe v. Wade.
The supreme court as it is now won’t change that and the Senate will block any anti-choice nominees.

Posted by: Giovanni | July 6, 2008, 10:13 am 10:13 am

Rove is definitely creepy…but the fact rtemains that Obama’s positions are all over the place. He will say or do anything to get elected. Including pretending to be pro guns anti Nafta and anti abortion.
Obama has no moral compass…he has no record to speak of…he just has a very successful campaign. And his positions will shift to win.

Posted by: Jackie | July 6, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

I’m not loving either candidate but I’m leaning toward Obama. Send a bunch of religious crazies to talk to me about taking the right to choose away from my daughters and I will definitely vote Obama. Congress hasn’t stood up to Bush and there is no reason to think they will stand up to the next president. As for a democrat controlled senate blocking any anti abortion judge, there is no guarantee that the senate will remain democratic control. Who ever is president is going to have a tough first couple of years. A lot of incumbents will get voted out in two years.
