Sen. Stevens Enters Not Guilty Plea
ABC News’ Matt Jaffe and Theresa Cook Report: At his Thursday afternoon arraignment before a federal judge, Sen. Ted Stevens pleaded not guilty to charges that he concealed $250,000 worth of gifts he received from an oil services company.
Stevens, the longest-serving Republican Senator, did not speak during his appearance in the packed courtroom, but his attorney, Brendan V. Sullivan Jr., told U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan that his client wished to plead not guilty. After the plea was entered, a relaxed-looking Stevens took a seat while lawyers began to hammer out the pre-trial details.
After a 30-minute recess, Judge Sullivan ruled that Stevens could be released on his own recognizance, but ordered him to surrender his passport. The court tentatively set the trial for September 24.
"This is not a complex case," Stevens’ attorney said before the break, as he requested that the trial be expedited so the Senator could have the opportunity to clear his name before the November election.
Stevens, one of 18 Republican Senators running for reelection this year, will attempt to fend off a challenge for the seat he’s held since 1968 from likely opponent Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage.
Attorney Sullivan had also asked for a change of venue to Alaska, noting that 90 percent of the case’s witnesses reside in that state and the activities in question occurred there, but prosecutor Brenda Morris argued that a move would be "inappropriate."
The defense is expected to file a formal request on the matter, and the judge said he’ll consider the request at an August 19 hearing.
A swarm of media surrounded the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C. in anticipation of the Alaska Republican’s appearance, but Stevens, wearing a light gray suit, pale blue shirt and dark blue tie, did not speak to reporters as he entered or exited the building.
On Tuesday, a federal grand jury handed down a seven-count indictment, charging that Stevens received $250,000 worth of gifts from the now-defunct Alaska firm VECO, but did not report them on financial disclosure forms he is required to submit to the secretary of the Senate.
The company and its CEO allegedly paid for major renovations to Stevens’ Girdwood, Alaska home, participated in a car swap with the Senator in which he received a significantly more valuable vehicle that the one he put up in the trade, and outfitted his home with a professional grill, tool cabinet and furniture, according to the indictment.
Stevens, the longest-serving Senator in his party, is the 11th sitting U.S. Senator to be indicted in American history.
He released a statement on Tuesday, declaring his innocence and stating his contention that he has never deliberately filed a false disclosure form.
Federal agents raided the Girdwood home last July as part of their investigation into alleged public corruption in Alaska. The inquiry, launched in 2004, has resulted in seven convictions to date, including those of former VECO executives and Alaska state lawmakers.
If convicted of making false statements, Stevens could face a maximum of five years in prison for each of the seven felony counts.
Stevens relinquished his leadership positions in the Senate after he was indicted, but conducted business as usual on Capitol Hill Wednesday, attending meetings and a Senate floor vote.

This is the senator that was over the sub-committee in 05 when oil company CEO’s were called in about price gouging, he REFUSED to swear in them. Had they been swore in then anything they said un-truthful could come back to haunt them. Now indicted for taking kickbacks from an oil company and lying about it, who would have thought! Are politicians ever accountable for their actions? One example William Jefferson $90,000 in the freezer and still walking the streets and there are many more……

Speaking of all the good Christ loving folks in that party, lets just hope that any court rulings that MAY occur for Cheney, Stevens, Rove, Gonzales, or Libby come after 01/20/09 because then the ring leader “W” will not be able to pardon them.

All the REpublicans are not guilty or defying supoenas. I hope the red states realize that their senators have been filibustering all the legislation in congress. It’s time for voters to wake up and smell the coffee. The nation is off the rails and change needs to happen before we hit financial disaster

I usually vote Republican – so what? If this man is convicted, I hope they give him the maximum as I won’t stick up for law breakers in my party any more than I will for law breakers in any party. I see comments saying that all republicans are bad and – conversely – all democrats are good. I see other comments that say, well this or that democrat did the same thing. Again, so what? If you think all law breakers are from one party or the other, I won’t waste my time trying to enlighten you. If you think that because one person does something wrong, then its an excuse for someone else, I can only question your value and judgment system, but again, I won’t waste time arguing. We need to hold all people – and especially our leaders – accountable for what they do. We shouldn’t give a pass to someone because we might happen to vote with them. Crime is not something you can stereotype to one group or another, and it isn’t something that should be ignored. Finally, I prefaced all this with – if he is found guilty. I still believe in the assumption of innocence – no matter which party a man is from.

So did he openly declare them. I take it the answer is no. Which is it? Another senior moment? Maybe he became too comfortable in his hut in Alaska.

Bill Allen of VECO and Senator Stevens both have their houses in Girdwood, Alaska, a ski resort and tourist area. It also seems that the charges against Stevens was receipts by Allen and VECO. It is sorta funny, considering Allen remodeled and added on to his own place the same year. I lived in Alaska for 25 years, knew both men and have been to Girdwood many, many times. This whole thing smells because of Allen’s CORRUPT business practices since the 70s.

This is one of the best examples of why we should have term limits – do not give them enough time to sell out. And what are these geezer doing running the country? We have a bunch of these fossils in Congress. OK, Ted Kennedy remains active, but we had a Southern Senator who was 100. There are a few over 80. IF they are too old to drive they should not be running the country.

Thank Christ! We’ve been waiting for this man to face his corruption for a loooong time. I think it’s a day late and a dollar short–it’s been happening for ages–and I bet he’ll be cleared or pardoned from any criminal charges. Part of me says keep him out of jail due to his age and the inhumanity of that, but really, this man is as close to pure evil your dreams can imagine.

Let’s see how long it takes until Bush pardons him. It’s unbelievable how many corrupt Repugnants are in power.
