Sprechen Sie Deutsches?

ABC News’ Natalie Gewargis Reports: Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign has printed fliers advertising his upcoming address in Berlin. . . in German.

2694048267 3e2a9043db 2 Sprechen Sie Deutsches?

The presumptive Democratic nominee (who represents the state of Illinois. . . in America) will be speaking in front of Berlin’s Victory Column in the Tiergarten on Thursday, as you can see by this flier. . . if you speak German.

For those of us who don’t speak the language of der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Obama’s website offers an English translation.

Who would have thought to invite Germans IN GERMAN! Brilliant!

Posted by: Jane Hussein | July 23, 2008, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm

Nope. No political rally here. None at all. Paid for the Obama for President group, but not a political rally.

So . . . the Brandenburg Gate’s NOT “too presumptuous” and/or Merkel relented?

Uh, Belle, gues you have never been to Berlin. The Victory Column is in The Tiergarten Park, the Brandenburg Gate is the entrance to the Park.

Internationally, our government has been hated and despised by the ordinary citizen of just about any country you care to name. President Bush cannot travel to SA, Europe, etc without riots and protests breaking out. With Obama’s election, that will be a thing of the past. Any problem with that?

To all you minimizing the flyers: don’t you remember? This trip is about meeting foreign leaders. It’s NOT about a campaign rally.
He thinks we’re all stupid. Hmmm, judging by some of the responses, he’s not far wrong!

What on purpose he wants to give a speech over there?
Is it because of JFK did it?

Posted by: catleya | July 23, 2008, 7:42 pm 7:42 pm

The corporate media is shameless in their attempts to suppress the fact that not only is John McCain NOT a foreign policy expert, over 50% of the time he has no idea what the hell he is talking about.
Which came first John, the Awakening or the Surge?

Posted by: Nobodys fool | July 23, 2008, 7:57 pm 7:57 pm

This after he wanted to speak at Brandenburg Gate (and had to put the Germans in the awkward position of telling him the site was too special for such a political rally).
How special?
JFK chose that location after committing, literally, the US to the brink of nuclear war for the liberation of Berlin,
Reagan, after presiding over policies which liberated East Germans and the rest of the Soviet Bloc in a long cold war with the Soviets.
Both world leaders. Both with massive accomplishments/risks directly and immeasurably affecting the German people.
Obama’s accomplishment he believes is worthy of speaking at that location?
Being Obama.

Man his ego is killing me. Half of me wish the Germans would do what the Iraquis did ignore him. We get it Obama people love you, but considering president bush won a second term I don’t trust many of my fellow american’s judgement, they want to vote for a cool guy I want to vote for someone who does more than give speeches and does photo ops, unfortantely it looks like that neither of the nomoniees fit the bill, how depressing.

Well, here’s the thing. Europeans, some from as far away as Poland, have shown up on the Obama site recently asking the where, when and “how much” of this event…. They probably think it’s a good opportunity to take a personal measure of the man who is likely to be the next president…. And Obama 08 probably thinks it’s polite and respectful to provide this information in the language of the host nation…. Am I being tedious, stating the blatantly obvious? … I sure hope so!

I think Bush senior summed up most of the comments above “…a little jealous, that’s all.” It appears this also sums up the feeling in camp McCain. They would have loved all this attention and global credibility but sorry… it ain’t gonna happen.

I have to say I probably wouldn’t have chosen the flyer myself…but as a film guy…I had a film that got advertised in different countries and each country has their own “jiggy” as distributors like to say…
in japan you advertise it with drama
in australia a comedy
and in germany play up the weird.
no offense to countries but that is what film distributors tend to say about the markets…
but yeah the flyer’s a little erksome

Reading most of the postings just shows how a bunch of people can perch in a small corner of America and pretend that they know how America runs by talking a lot even while the ‘dream’ is eluding them by the nanosecond.People just need to change their mindset and start making real choices over blind sentiment.

To this day, I am amazed when people claim being black is advantageous in a presidential race. IF it is, WHY HAS THIS COUNTRY NOT HAD A MAN/WOMAN OF COLOR AS PRESIDENT IN CENTURIES?
Obama is intelligent, has good judgement, is genuine, passionate about his country and yes, articulate.
Don’t resort to racist attacks – they certainly aren’t intelligent.

The color in the poster looks to be Prussian Blue. Isn’t it a Prussian monument? Yes. To celebrate Prussian military dominance. And the name Prussian blue comes from the fact that it was first extensively used to dye the dark blue uniforms of the Prussian army.
There’s a color sample at Wikipedia so you can make your own comparisons.
It looks weird. The pose. The color use.

How come the polls here at ABC news for Veepstakes show 34,000 voters for McCain (Romney wins with 42%) and Obama only has 6,300 voters (Hillary wins with 37%)?
These numbers are a look into the future and in November President McCain will be our 44th Commander In Chief. Country before party and I believe him. Obama would never put anything before himself.

He won’t do it because everything he does is “staged”.
He uses “duh, hmm, and uhh” until his 300 advisors have time to whisper in ear.

OBama is only shell no insides.
Today, he tried to brag about his deeds — don’t just listen to my words, I have good deeds too. then, he said, my committee, the banking committee, did some good last week. well, Obama forgot which committee he serves on.
Every time he tried to brag about his records, he’s been caught exaggerating (or, lying to be accurate by not telling the whole story). Remeber his bill regulating the nuclear industry — I passed it last year. NYT found out it did not pass at all.

Obama is on his “we are the world” tour instead of “proud to be an American tour” and our troops just don’t think like that. He’ll be lucky to get 14% of the military vote, like he’s getting 98% of the 14% of black Americans vote.
Good luck with that. Thank God for Fox news and conservative talk radio (80% of political talk radio is conservative, like the bulk of this country). This guy is the most liberal candidate ever and truly has only got this far on his skin color and Oprah endorsement.

Perhaps his staff can ressurect Leni Reifenstahl to produce a rally worthy of the Senator’s magnitude. It worked for the Fourth Party Congress… Germans love spectacle!

Obama is completely untried, not saying that in 20 years or so he might not have proven himself but I don’t think so.
He is a snake oil salesman. You talk about Rove being behind the scenes but have you watched (or heard) your “golden child” without a teleprompter when his 300 advisors are not able to feed him his lines? Why do you think he resists open forums so strongly?

the Siegessäule (Victory Column) is hardly a Nazi shrine; it was erected to celebrate the Prussian victory against he Danes in 1873, a long while before the National Socialist political movement came into being.
As for Obama holding political rallies on foreign soil, the damage done to America’s reputation in the world community by the Bush administration is practically immeasurable; You want acts of political ego? You need look no further than the Bush/Cheney axis.

I live in Germany and have to say that I find the fact that Obama is coming here disgusting. He is a US senator who has little to no influence whatsoever on anything to do with Germany or other foreign policy. Yet they roll out the red carpet for him and allow him to make a speech here. And guess who has to pay for it? The German taxpayers. He is blatently using the German people and government to polish his image and for ‘electioneering’.
How would the American people feel if a meaningless junior member of parliment from somewhere like Australia made a trip to the US so he could look good at home, and the US taxpayers had to foot the bill and got nothing out of it?

Now we cannot put gas in the tank of our car, we have to put our houses on foreclosure, lose our jobs, not be able to send our children to college. All of that because of the 8 years of faillures of WBush-Cheney-McSame’s policies. McBush has no vision for America no program for its leadership inside and outside. Obama did not pick Germany for his rally, because he wants to change the Germans attitude about Americans, he did it because the pro-Obama mania, was already in place and the polls are sympathetic . Why will they cheer? Because they see a less influential America coming with a Obama presidency, they see a bigger government, fewer personal freedoms and a lower standard of living–in short, Americans a lot more like Europeans. Trying to influence American voters with a campaign rally of people who loathe much of what America stands for strikes as a POOR JUDGMENT!

Posted by: jp,michigan | July 24, 2008, 10:58 am 10:58 am

How about creating a new political party please- take the best of both sides and make term limits mandatory and… sigh- Okay now……..
Just how tolerant are the German people-If the Germans, could deal with BOH as their political leader, then I would really be amazed- until then I think their homogenous nature and their less than liberal social policiies kinda clash with Barry’s ‘Hope message’
Do the German courts tolerate litigation and do they give great judgements? Do they allow abortion and what do they do with those Down’s syndrome babies… The Polizei go to (used to at least) school for four years to be policemen- their actions are final and not scrutinized by their media unless gross abuses occur-
I spent five years in West Germany in the early eighties and if there ever was a person the then West German’s I knew would deplore and really worry about living near the Fulda Gap it would be B H Obama.
Using all of his European/Middle East Victory Tour Photo Ops- can’t wait to see the photo montage in Denver…
Why not use a quaint East German hamlet to do this photo op? Or can’t they put a lid on the unemployed new aryan types running amok with no jobs and less hope-Maybe Barry can show them some Hope like we have here in the US?
It is pretty sad that all the academic types supporting this man will rally around all this hoopla, convienently choosing to forget history…. History, who needs it anymore- We have had a few Executives who have chosen to write their own and/or invent it (for personal gain?) like a Vice President who became self proclaimed ‘King of the Internet’ and then Environmental Issues… Hmmm, no wonder why our banks have issues, people learned that they can make money and then we would all pay to correct the situation- Ask some Norwegians about this situation….
We are a stupid country and if/when we let this happen, we deserve what will happen to us- Can you say Cuba, remember that Kennedy thing with the missiles- those pesky soviets/russkys are now rattling their swords by threatening sending Blackjacks there…. and then when the EMP 100 miles above Kansas eviscerates our infrastructure…. I am not that whacked, just pretty scared about where this country that I love is going to…
Can we start a new party, please>
