The Daily Show on the New Yorker Cover

A funny — and at times, devastating — take on the controversy involving the New Yorker cover from Jon Stewart and the Daily Show.

Stewart suggests that the more appropriate response from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois — rather than being offended (or saying the cover "fueled some misconceptions about me," as he did on CNN last night) — would be to have said "Barack Obama is in no way upset about the cartoon that depicts him as a Muslim extremist. Because you know who gets upset about cartoons? Muslim extremists! Of which Barack Obama is not. It’s just a f—ing cartoon!"

Stewart may be even more effective when skewering the media, though. Watch HERE.

I hardly think Obama overreacted to this cover cartoon of him and his wife as the exact depiction of what his detractors want to believe of him. It certainly wasn’t flattering in any way — but it did exactly what was intended – show up the ignorant jerks who believe this crap about him and Michelle – and there are many ignorant jerks out there!! That’s a fact.

It warms my heart to get great news from THE DAILY show.
The youth vote BO is counting on since the legion of seasoned voters have abandoned the DNC, get their news from
JOHN STEWART AND THE DAILY SHOW!!!

I wonder if John Stewart would say the same thing if they put him in a swastika get-up smashing a star of David.
It’s the same thing.
As funny and as self depricating as John Stewart is…he is not really getting it… or portrayed him as a rapist on the cover of ANY magazine.
It’s a cartoon but sometimes portraying someone as something revolting to them …can still be offensive.
Barack handled it really well. Better than most of us would have.
It was a bad judgement call by the New Yorker. If you think it is stupid that someone is called a violently angry mysoginist… you don’t draw a picture of the person on your cover raping someone.
Just a bad judgement call…in my measly opinion.

dl,
I guess you missed Monday’s show, which they showed Jon Stewart with naked “lady parts” and hanging out with Stephen Baldwin. It was pretty funny.

The upset about Obama being upset about the New Yorker being upset about email smears about Obama…
Jon Stewart has been increasingly unfunny lately and I wonder if he fears a Presidency that might not do something worth mocking everyday. John McCain may be very amusing and his most favorite guest, but I think there’s plenty to go at there, too.
The man reacted pretty reasonably, I mean, it was a caricature of his wife as well. What if he had said, eh, so what? Oh, I’m sure there wouldn’t have been ANY criticism. Headlines – “Obama ‘OK’ with Being Portrayed as a Terrorist,” “Obama Doesn’t Stand Up for his Wife,” “Obama and Other Elitists – Terrorism OK to Joke About.” Give me a break. Would a cover with a picture of McCain having a stroke have been funny? Oh, it’s satirical, get it? He’s old!

Posted by: squintz | July 16, 2008, 11:33 am 11:33 am

The real news here is that the cartoon did not change ANYONE’s mind. Those that believe will continue to believe and those that don’t will not be affected. Most voters have already formed their opinion and there are very few that will change between now and November unless there is some big mind blowing news about one of the candidates. Most of us have just stopped listening to all the “stuff”. I personally think if the elections were held today, the results would be the same as in November (again, unless there was a real big news come out). We can only hope that something does happen!

I think obama handled it very well considering it not only offended him but his wife the way I see it the more ingnorant people knock him down, the stronger he gets they say it takes a better man to walk away. Im proud of you obama and I will be even prouder when you become president!!!!!!!!!!

it’s funny that you think putting John in “naked lady parts” is the same as dressing him up as a nazi destroying the star of david…or dressing him up as a rapist.
Yeah don’t know what to say to that… but your comment explains how we got George Bush.

How much was the New Yorker paid by the Neocons for that cover, I in no way thought it was supposed to help Obama’s myths of being a muslim or radicals. It was no way funny and was in very very poor taste supposedly coming from a liberal magazine.

Posted by: DEMOCRAT FOR THE WHITE HOUSE | July 16, 2008, 12:00 pm 12:00 pm

Obama believes everything is off limits if they’re about him. He’s complained about statements regarding everything from his wife to the size of his ears. The guy is really paranoid and doesn’t have the thick skin it takes to lead a nation. Funny though, he has no reluctance to throwing stink bombs at other people!

Posted by: Aston | July 16, 2008, 12:10 pm 12:10 pm

I guess Obama is the only politician that cannot be depicted in unflattering magazine covers.
He shouldn’t be treated any differently than any other politician. Obama is used to being coddled by the media, but finally that is changing.
I think Obama has a very radical past so the cover isn’t too far off.

Personally I thinkthey just made a mistake…
theyw ere a little too “high-falutin’” thinking they can put an image out that holds a lot of emotion in it…but they have it so overthought and intellectualized…that they think it is funny …
in the middle of trying to raise awareness of trying to show how attractive a person can be…you don’t put up a Picasso where the person has had there face cut in half and arms growing out of there side…to get that message across. People in general won’t get the jump.
maybe inside the magazine…but not on the cover.
the editor is just dumb.

I bought a copy of New Yorker magazine. It’s selling like hot pancakes in New York. Believe it or not, Obama is not taken seriously in the TRI-State (NY, NJ, CT) not even in PA and Wash DC where I spent my 4th f uly. He’s just a laughing stock everywhere. Most people are taking McCain as a serious candidate. I bet SuperDelegates must be having second thoughts by now. Obama’s luster is fast fading. Kerry was consistently 14% ahead of Bush prior to General Election but guess who won? Kerry had 88% lead over Bush for Black votes at the conclusion of GE, guess who won? I guess they failed to realize that 75% of the whole of US are made up of Whites and those whites havent come out of their eggshells yet. Those polls are coming from people who don’t have anything to do with life. Wait until the professionals, working people esp. white blue collar workers come out of their shells….

OK, we all know this was yet another last gasp from the creepy Clinton caravan. Also no surprise that Stewart thinks it is OK – the guy who thinks demeaning all but his favorite is humorous and the news.
My hope is that all of these grudge matches hanging over us will be settled in 2008 and we can get back to real work.
I am totally sick of all humor that thinks of itself as “smart and cute” – of which they are usually neither.

If one looks at the people piling on in favor of the New Yorker cover, you will see that they are all creepy Clinton supporters. Why is that? My bet is that they think some kind of trick can be played at the Democratic convention.
If one looks at RealClearPolitics summary of polls, one can see that sort of switch is unlikely – as much as Rush Limbaugh would like that.

Angie, you wrote: “the fact is he does not or never did pratice muslim…”
First of all it is curious that Sen. Obama’s campaign recently released a statement saying: “(Sen. Obama) has never been a practicing Muslim.” So they’ve now gone from never having been a Muslim to never being a “practicing” Muslim. As we all know, words do matter. So why the addition of the word “practicing?”
While I, personally, take Sen. Obama’s word that he is a Christian, there is a lot of evidence that as a child he was Muslim. Records indicate that while attending the Roman Catholic Franciscus Assisi Primary School in Jakarta, Indonesia, he was registered as a Muslim. He was later enrolled in a public school in Jakarta, Besuki Primary School. This is a Muslim school. In reference to Besuki Primary School, one source states: “All Indonesian students are required to study religion at school, and a young ‘Barry Soetor,’ being a Muslim, would have been required to study Islam daily in school.” Sen. Obama’s own book, “Dreams From My Father,” acknowledges that he studied the Quran and even describes Besuki Primary School as a “Muslim school.” And there are now a number of individuals who have come forward claiming that — as a child — Sen. Obama prayed in a mosque. Even the Chicago Tribune now says that it has found that Sen. Obama DID attend a mosque. But after interviewing dozens of individuals they have concluded that Sen. Obama was not a “regular practicing Muslim.”
THAT is still a very long way from “never” having been a Muslim.

When you have no substance, you simply criticize your opponents, accusing her or him things they never said or did. They have to defend themselves, and by the media cycle finished that round, they forgot what the original question was and a new subject will come along.
NewYorker fuels misconception – so said 0bama. Now you know, NewYorker was probably correct since 0bama is shifting blames.
That’s how a phony does his business to deceive you.

Aston – he makes fun of his ears all the time. For example, in February when asked who should play him in a movie, Obama said, “Will Smith and I have talked about this, because he has the ears. He’s better looking than me, but we both have those (ears).” Gosh, what an uptight priss, right? You people are delusional. (Preparing for the “ooo, Hollywood liberal elitist” smears in 3, 2, 1…)
Neil1785 – are you blogging from the year 1785 or what? I live in PA, friend, and know many people in the “tri-state” area and Washington, DC, and I’m pretty sure Obama’s being taken seriously. So seriously, in fact, that I’d bet everything I have that he beats McCain by extremely wide margins in each of those states come November…try to pay attention. Or, you know, keep your head buried in this blog along with all your delusional cronies.

Obama will be a mediocre president, God Forbid and might get re-elected if he can TRICK Americans into thinking he is doing a good job. After 4 years America will be so sick of him they will beg for a new president. And Hillary will be the only choice people will want to make.

Barrack Obama, as a child was enrolled in the schools by his mother and grandparents and had little say about the actual school. I don’t care if he went to a muslim school or studied the koran or not; I do care whether he is telling the truth now as an adult. I don’t think he is.

It’s His choice to be inspired by the hatemonger, GoddamningAmerica Rev. Wright for 20 years and wrote a book entitled by his sermons.
It is His choice to make housing deals with his 15 years friend Rezko to benefit himself while the Americans lose their mortgages to foreclosure.
It is His choice to take money from Ayers to send him to the state senate.
It is His choice to abandon – where did he learn that from – his stepping-stone, beloved, Christian Church, when winds tilted a bit to the right.
It is His choice to vote for a bill that spies on you and everyone else, abandoning his Promise to the American people, for his political pandering.

All this outrage of this cartoon gave me flashbacks to the suppression and the manipulation of the press under Bush. Is this what we are in for if Obama gets elected? The fear of free speech because of retaliation by Obama and his supporters.
Hillary please come back!

dl, you wrote: “because his (Sen. Obama’s) platform is the most modern and smart.”
Stealing from the wealthy and giving to the middle class might be modern, but smart? The old entitlements, Medicare and Social Security, will become bankrupt in about 12 and 33 years, respectively, if they aren’t reformed. Yet, Sen. Obama’s “platform” calls for implementing several additional entitlements which combined are as, if not more, expensive than the old entitlements; and, as yet, does not include reforming the old entitlements (just more stealing from the wealthy). Is that smart?

rrow, you wrote: “All this outrage of this cartoon gave me flashbacks to the suppression and the manipulation of the press under Bush.”
I would certainly appreciate some examples of Bush’s suppression and manipulation of the press. Finally, flashbacks refer to “past” memories, so I guess by your statement Bush’s alleged suppression and manipulation of the press is over.

P.S. – Obama said he had a “scheduling conflict” in August when Texas was trying to get a town hall together with 6,000 vets/military families for a McCain/Obama “debate”. He runs scared all the time….afraid of McCain the way he was afraid of Hillary….c’mon Obama “man up”!

Funny – both Jon and the NewYorker are Liberal mediums, and it is the Obama Liberal crew who are doing their best to stifle free speech and free expression! Proves my point – your guy is O’Bush! What will he do if, Heavens forbid, he gets the Presidency? Scary!

Posted by: Beckie | July 16, 2008, 8:13 pm 8:13 pm

James Danley you asked; I would certainly appreciate some examples of Bush’s suppression and manipulation of the press.
Do the names Valerie Plame & Joe Wilson and the New york Times bring back any memories? How about anyone who spoke out against the Iraq war being called unpatriotic? The press went right along helping sell the Iraq war and now they are selling Obama and implying anyone who does not support him is racist. There is so much criticism over anyone who questions Obama it could have, and has had, the effect of making people afraid to speak up. Some of his supporters have made death threats to some of the Hillary supporters who are not behind Obama now.

Posted by: rrow | July 16, 2008, 11:50 pm 11:50 pm

rrow, Joe Wilson outed his own wife by naming her as the “former Valerie Plame” in his biography for Who’s Who long before Robert Novak wrote his article.
Calling someone unpatriotic is suppression and manipulation of the press??? I don’t see that correlation. Now then if the Bush administration HAD manipulated the press you wouldn’t have heard about ANY of the deaths in Iraq. Instead the mainstream media has ONLY covered the negatives of the war. None of the successes are covered…and trust me there have been plenty of successes. So that is strong evidence of NO suppression and manipulation of the press.

Posted by: James Danley | July 17, 2008, 12:11 am 12:11 am

Everything you wanted to know about how the Bush administration intimidated the press is outlined in this book; “Bush’s Law: The Remaking of American Justice”

Posted by: JV | July 17, 2008, 9:05 am 9:05 am

Yes, the Bush Administration has, for national security reasons, attempted to convince the press to not reveal classified information that they have obtained regarding our efforts in defeating the enemy at a time of war. There may be some of the mainstream media who have placed national security first and chose not to reveal the classified information. But there are others who have chosen to aid the enemy and make our efforts more difficult by publishing classified information. So unless there is evidence of extortion or threats against members of the media, this is not suppression of the press. This is just pleading the case of national security so that the enemy will not know what we are doing.
