The Note: Obama Gets Iraq Boost from Prime Minister
ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports in Monday’s Note: Someone remember to write down the address, so Sen. Barack Obama can send that thank-you note.
Whatever his motivations, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did Obama a huge favor with the magazine interview where he seemed to back Obama’s plans for Iraq — offering him a better welcome than if he had been greeted with flowers as a liberator.
One little interview changed the storyline for this portion of the trip — and boosted Obama’s credibility on the subject at hand. Now, it’s McCain on the defensive — needing to explain why he differs from Obama, Maliki — and maybe even the Bush administration, backers of a “time horizon” (no frames, there) for troop withdrawal.
“In Iraq, controversy continued to reverberate between the United States and Iraqi governments over a weekend news report that Mr. Maliki had expressed support for Mr. Obama’s proposal to withdraw American combat troops within 16 months of January,” Sabrina Tavernise and Jeff Zeleny write in The New York Times. “The reported comments came after Mr. Bush agreed on Friday to a ‘general time horizon’ for pulling out troops from Iraq without a specific timeline.”
This is hard to walk back: “The following is a direct translation from the Arabic of Mr. Maliki’s comments by The Times: ‘Obama’s remarks that — if he takes office — in 16 months he would withdraw the forces, we think that this period could increase or decrease a little, but that it could be suitable to end the presence of the forces in Iraq.’ He continued: ‘Who wants to exit in a quicker way has a better assessment of the situation in Iraq.’ ”

This gets the trip off on the right foot: “Senator Obama meets with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad. The two apparently have a lot in common,” ABC’s Terry Moran reported Monday on “Good Morning America.” “Over the weekend, Maliki shocked the Bush White House.”
While in Iraq, Obama will be interviewed by Terry Moran for a special edition of “Nightline” Monday — with portions to be broadcast on “World News” and “Good Morning America” as well.
Maliki’s comments may not have been an accident: “Confusion over the Iraqi prime minister’s seeming endorsement of Barack Obama’s troop withdrawal plan is part of Baghdad’s strategy to play U.S. politics for the best deal possible over America’s military mission,” the AP’s Robert H. Reid writes. One goal: To “exploit Obama’s position on the war to force the Bush administration into accepting concessions considered unthinkable a few months ago,” Reid reports.
Suddenly, Obama’s Iraq trip has a much bigger upside: “Washington-Baghdad move to a ‘general time horizon’ and Maliki’s comments have plainly focused the Iraq debate on terms preferred by Obama, just as he is poised to touch down on Iraqi soil,” Politico’s Jonathan Martin reports.

This is the kind of change we need. In the past, presidents would wait until they were sworn in to get to work. Obama is laying the groundwork to hit the ground running come January.

Maliki’s staement gave a huge boost to Obama. Itwas such a clear endorsement of Obama’s proposals. However we got to this point, Maliki was saying that Obama’s exit strategy is the workable one. It reinforces Obama’s argument that though he may not have the experience he has superior judgment and understanding. Even Bush is now talking to the Iranians and talking about “troop horizons” in Iraq – Obama’s framework is becoming the accepted model.

Bush is no political ally of McCains. Rove/Bush “swift boated” McCain in the 2000 election cycle and now again Bush hangs McCain out to dry with the “Iraqi withdraw” agreement of Friday and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s published magazine article. John finds himself alone having been thrown under his Straight Talk Express bus by his President.
Posted by: Lou R | July 21, 2008, 9:38 am 9:38 am
Deepwork,
Although he threw his work as the Senator of Illinois under the bus to do so. The problem is that Obama never “got to work” in anything, if he had done so this trip would not be a big deal at all because he would have the experience in foreign relations just like Hillary, McCain and all the others. Many of the others have been working on such issues all along regardless of whether or not you agree with their tactics.

Bush is laughing stock #1 to the rest of the world and McCain would be laughing stock #2. These two guys are two of the biggest jokers in world politics. Vote McCain so I could laugh myself to sleep every night after listening to David Letterman and Leno. McCain would be fodder for the comedians. I know America will vote McCain..it will be the biggest upset in American politics..If Americans can give a joker like George Bush two terms you know McCain has an excellent chance to win in November. Please Disappoint me and vote Obama so we can have a president that we all can be proud of..Articulate, charismatic, bright, balanced and overall just plain better than McCain. Obama would be the president for all Americans..black,white,hispanic,asian,jew, gentile,Catholic, protestant, old, young, women, children, college students, the dispossessed,Republicans, Independant..EVERYONE! Obama gets HIS TRAINING WHEELS, and the American taxpayers are being raked for this jaunt. In this ONE week jaunt, he hopes to get some semblance of foreign policy/national security experience. Hopefully, one week is not enough to cause serious damage to the progress achieved. Oh Hillary, you would have been magnanimous as our First Woman President of the United States of America. LETTER TO SENATOR BARACK OBAMA
Montreal, February 20, 2008
SENATOR OBAMA ,
The whole world has its eyes on you, on The United States Of America and its people.
Everyone expects you to be democratically elected and see that something happen in America.
In March 1983, one of humanity’s most famous spokesmen, Pope John Paul II, came to our country – ‘Haîti’ – and loudly proclaimed what each and every one of us had been whispering:
‘Something must change here.’
Today, more than ever, a lot of people of The United States of America stand up, longing for something and working to make something happen.
And, like in March 9, 1983, beloved Haiti, History – (which from then and now on rests in thy hands) – tells thee: “it is now time to let people speak to thee of love!’, let’s say today’: ‘Go thou America ahead and show us thy true countenance in a positive light.’ It is up to everyone to play his or her part in order to let thee regain thy mark of excellence !”
With this letter, I am communicating with You, Senator Obama, and with the whole people of The United States of America.
You offer this country what it takes to be a ‘Wonderfull Land.’ Yes, let us say ‘with a great people living together.’
Go thou, America, go ahead, following in the footsteps of one of thy sons who is now becoming one of thy statesmen.
With this in mind, Mr.Obama, to whom else could I entrust this letter sent to his Holiness Pope John Paul II when he set foot on Haitian soil for the first time, as well as its acknowledgment by the Vatican?
That letter to Pope John Paul II is intended to draw attention to the problem posed by anti-Black discrimination and its negative repercussions on the advancement of scientific progress in the West, and more precisely in the realm of Optics.
In the Western world, according to Newton’s widely accepted theory, white is considered to be the synthesis of all colors. Actually, the opposite is true. White constitutes the analysis or ‘visible’ decoding of light or color, whereas black is its synthesis or ‘invisible’ composition.
In other words, darkness or blackness and, we might add, “Black Holes’”- a scientific misnomer designating invisible stars or ‘Black Suns’ – are a source of energy and light.
That basic raw material of light energy culminates, in its most radiant form, in the neutralization of all the colors of the spectrum in the form of so-called “white light.”
Therefore “absolute blackness”, the absorption of all the colors, is a divisible component of light. Needless to say, Newton’s theory gives only a partial interpretation of the notion of light, by excluding black. Our contribution aims at demonstrating that the black color is not only an integral part of the color process, but its true synthesis. Light is therefore shown to be a divisible whole comprising an intensity or color scale in which black is the invisible or ‘absorbed’ form of the energy in question.
Allow me, Senator Obama, in order to support my statement concerning Black Holes and radiation, to pose a question asked by Hubert Reeves, Doctor of nuclear astrophysics and Scientific Consultant to NASA:
“What would have become of the Sun, if it were plunged into a high temperature radiance like the one that existed at the beginning of the Universe? [our translation]”
“Instead of emitting light, it would absorb it and, in the end, it would be completely reabsorbed into the cosmic fluid.”
The cosmic fluid is what, due to an “optical mistake”, is called “darkness” or the “blackness of space”. We are talking about the electromagnetic flux, that immeasurable ocean in which the planets and stars are bathed, like the sea which links all the continents together. Darkness is thus “The Sea of Space.”
“What would have happened if, instead of an ordinary star like the “White Sun”, a Black Hole or “Black Sun” were injected into that primordial radiation?
“According to Einsteinian Physics, a Black Hole is a place where gravity is so formidably intense that nothing can escape it, not even visible light. Such a hole should suck in and absorb radiation and increase its own mass: E=MC2, always.”
“But after Einstein came Bohr, Heisenberg, and Quantum Physic. From then on, nothing was the same as before.
“The Einsteinian version of the Black Hole is equivalent to a statement that the matter inside the Black Hole is definitely there to stay, in that volume of space. Let us quote Hubert Reeves: “Such an absolute statement is thus contrary to the “Quantum spirit”, affirming that nothing is definitely localized in one place. There is always a probability of escape. If the enclosing wall is too high, a tunnel will be dug; if the prisoners are patient, they will escape. One has only to wait. [our translation]”
“According to that principle, Black Holes “evaporate.” Matter constantly escapes as radiation. Black Holes “shine!” Their surfaces behave like those of any body heated to a certain temperature and that radiation endlessly feeds that marvelous “Cosmic Fluid” which, wrongly and in bad faith, people keep calling “Darkness.”
Nigra sum “sed” formosa.
Yes, but should we not say instead, I am black “and” comely?
Darkness, which is both source and vehicle of light, does not have to defend itself for being the beautiful and infinitely discreet raw material of the Universe. Darkness is the “Mother of the Universe.”
Also, beautiful and discreet art thou, Haiti. Discreet, yes, but never outshone! Just like the Black Virgin who inspires and sheds her love on thee from the hilltop and even beyond Cité Soleil (Sun City).
Our purpose was to offer a more constructive approach aiming at correcting the abusive traditional, so-called scientific, theories of Optics. That is why, we wrote to that authentic witness to the signs of this age, His Holiness Pope John Paul II, the prophet of the new era.
Congratulations to You, Sir, and congratulations to the people of The United States Of America, for having made it possible for this day to mark the beginning of a “New Era of Hope !”

If anyone reported with enough research they would know that al quaeda wanted the civil war to go away…
they want a unified Iraq…
Reports say they were worried about Iraq’s civil war being blamed on them.
and this goes way beyond al-quaeda. The russian spy who was poisoned had claimed before he died that it was his reponsibility to bring al-zawarihi into russia to train him.
al-qaeda wants the war to settle down so they can sweep back in.
that is why mccain is stuck in a very bad place…and so are we…
they thought they would go in and get a stronghold and it has backfired tremendously…because we can’t afford to occupy Iraq forever and we ignored and strengthened the al-qaeda cause with this one stupid war.

The Bush/McCain twins are foiled again by the modern world. There’s a recording. The “retraction” was So-o-o-o weak AND it came through the U.S. Military Central Command. Since when does the leader of a sovereign nation have to make it’s statements through the U.S. Military? Bush is again trying to squeeze a world leader and makes himself look like the thug he is.
The media should have reported on McCain’s other enormous gaffe of the weekend. As McCain well knows, since he has made the trip many times, the Secret Service and the State Department require strict secrecy regarding travel plans and itineraries for security reasons when officials travel out of the country and particularly into terrorist war zones. McCain announced Obama’s itinerary to the world while Obama’s airplane was actually in the air on the way to Afghanistan. Either he’s too senile to maintain security or he’s too evil to be president of the United States. Either way, I doubt that anyone will be giving him courtesy briefings regarding Obama again. Would the media have told the story if harm had resulted? America is getting more than a little tired of the media protecting John McCain. It would have been improper to cover it while Obama was still in Afghanistan, but where’s the story today? That was an incredibly lousy thing to do. There is more to patriotism than talking about it John. One major component would include not saying things that could get the possible next POTUS killed.

I agree. This wasn’t just a GAFFE. This “slip” concerns the security of the highest order. If McCain is capable of making this type of security leak in a public forum, then his mental capacity to keep us secure needs to be closely examined, not just by the press, but by all American citizens.

Obama needs to get as much head start as possible to fix all of bush’s messes, it is amazing all the support from world leaders after bush has embarassed our country and insulted the rest of the world for the last eight years…it will be refreshing to restore our honor once again……it can’t happen soon enough……
how many chairs such as gramm, day, etc…will mccain have to go through before people realize what a backwards racist cold war ideologue he is and that not a single one of these neocons would do a single thing differently than bush???? how can it be any clearer???? how many different ethnicities must mccain insult?? how many times must he demonstrate his inadequacy for the job for not knowing what the internet is to admitting he knows nothing about the economy, his advisors calling americans whiners and then another saying we must destroy all muslims….it is astounding, they are fifty years behind the times……this is NOT nazi germany…wake up, people!!!!!

What part of Bush’s “when the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down” speech are so many people having trouble remembering? Now that the Iraqis are indeed “standing up”, one province at a time, and we slowly begin to stand down, taking a support role rather than the lead and actually begin discussion about a time horizon for withdrawal to occur, it’s suddenly all to Obama’s credit?
Obama to hit the ground running? That’s pretty funny. Now that someone else has done all the hard work, he intends to bask in the absolute and unquestioning adoration of his followers (many of them quoted here) for getting us out of Iraq.
The rest of us will remember factual history.

How many sets of “training wheels” will Obama need? During this ONE week jaunt overseas, Obama hopes to earn his “training wheels” in foreign policy/national security. When does he earn his training wheels for economic, health care, and all the other issues? And, is the American taxpayer footing the bill for these things? With cameras and reporters in tow, this thing is as shallow as Obama’s experience is shallow. Oh well, we have the Olympics to look forward to.

IS IT TIME FOR JOHN MCCAIN TO REORGANIZE HIS CAMPAIGN AGAIN?
For supporters of Hillary Clinton, look at the way the Republican attack machine is going after Michelle Obama. Here is a classy, intelligent and successful women. Perhaps not as accomplished as Hillary, but with a resume similar to Hillary’s before she became first lady.
Also, never forget how McCain trashed Lilly Ledbetter, a women who discovered just before retirement that she had been systematically discriminated against by her male supervisors, went to court, PROVED HER CASE, and had it reversed on the grounds that she didn’t file when she first got the job (even though salary information was secret!).
People out there who have employer supplied health insurance or any health insurance should know that John McCain wants to REMOVE THE TAX BREAK enjoyed by companies that provide health insurance.
You should also know that it is part of the McCain “plan” to allow health insurance companies to be regulated by the state of their own choosing (by simply reincorporating in a friendly state). Say GOODBYE consumer protection laws. Say HELLO to all disputes going to industry sponsored “arbitrators”, that just by accident side with the health industry 99% of the time?
To people who care about protecting America from terrorists, remember that John McCain and George Bush decided to start a war we didn’t need in Iraq, and to abandon the war on the terrorists who attacked us, in Afghanistan.

Obama, like everyone else, is not perfect, but he seems to care more about what the American people want then McCain. That is the point of undecided independent voters. Most of which I know supported Biden, or Edwards,or HRC and do NOT care for Obama and are leaning towards McCain. It is actually the opinions of Obama supporters that turn them off the most.
Just because I bring up HRC does not mean that I supported her.

For what it is worth, Joe Biden would be a great pick for V.P. Experienced, smart, knows more about foreign relations that anyone else in Washington.
His health care proposal, public funding for catastrophic health insurance would be very helpful for large and small businesses, encourage more employers to provide health insurance.
It would also fix the unfortunate situation where a small business fires someone with a major illness to avoid making health insurance unaffordable for the rest of the employees.

I am Independent. There was a time that I thought I could vote McCain, I used to be a fan. But I don’t know who THIS John McCain is. He has changed so much. I was fine with eith HRC or Obama. I don’t hate HRC. I’m excited to see where she will fit into Obamas Presidency.

Sue- I have seen some of the back and forth between Paul and those lawmakers. They do want us gone militarily. McCain is hinging so much of his campaign on this surge and stay nonsense. He should be going after Obama’s rediculous spending promises. Both McCain and Obama will spend us into the ground. One through warfare, the other through welfare. Too bad Paul was not given more attention. I am going with Barr most likely.

will someone please start talking about the fact that terrorist experts across the world have said that alqaeda needed the war to stabilize because they were afraid they would be blamed as much as America…
and that alqaeda came to power because of Russia’s invasion and attempted occupation if Afghanistan…
there recruitment grew overwhelmingly as it is now if we stay.
we lost an opportunity to leave and not have their recruitment grow.
or that Mccain is stuck in a bad position he took with this war which has increased alqaeda’s power substantially…because we were so stupid to make a play for Iraq because of the underlying issues of this story…
http://www.sundayherald.com/news/heraldnews/display.var.2392802.0.my_warning_to_britain_your_democracy_is_under_attack_from_putins_kgb_infiltrators.php
the russian spy that was killed in england had said he had been in charge of al zawahiri being trained by the FSB…
meaning the Russians were training alqaeda…
could it be we made a huge strategic blunder based out of cold war fear? a national grab at a base in the middle east that worked for al qaeda like the soviet attempt on afghanistan…
Mccain has no understanding obviously of the dynamics of shia and sunni or is so blind in his cold war emntality that he thinks we should keep stretching our occupation…
the original fatwa’s these groups put out were against that actual fact…focusing on palestine, egypt and saudi arabia…and neighbors of the area… now we have stepped in front to protect them but made it even worse and them stronger in doing so…
stupid stupid stupid.

The ability for the Iraqi government to even consider this time table for withdrawal, is totally based on the surge. Something that Barack Obama opposed!
This just highlights Obama’s lack of judgement.

Lydia – I worry about Obama less than McCain. Where Obama is weak, spending, he has no ultimate authority. Where McCain is weak, foreign policy, he could do quite a bit of damage as Bush has done. Let’s just hope congress does not sign authority to wage war to one person again. I hope Obama wins between the two.

Part of the McCain “plan” is to allow health insurance companies to be regulated by the state of their own choosing (by simply reincorporating in a friendly state). Say GOODBYE consumer protection laws. Say HELLO to all disputes going to industry sponsored “arbitrators”, that just by accident side with the health industry 99% of the time?

When asked if McCain agreed with Obama’s assessment, McCain said, “I think it’s serious.”
But he said troops would be available for Afghanistan “as we succeed in Iraq and come home in victory and honor.”
Notice: How McCain is Stressing Victory & Honor, as though the Current Downsizing of Brigades Lack Honor.
Note: We are Downsizing in Iraq anyway, and the incoming General to replace General Patraeus, says that once everything Secure, there is no reason for us to stay in Iraq.
“You don’t have to choose to lose in Iraq,” McCain said. “If we had lost in Iraq, the complications in Afghanistan would have been enormously more difficult,” he added.
McCain stumbled again over his geography while discussing the two war fronts. At one point he cited the problems with the “Iraq-Pakistan border.”
Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border !!
McCain was apparently referring to the Afghan-Pakistan border. Taliban militants use the border area as a safe haven from which to attack U.S. troops.
1. McCain tries to put down Obama, when his A$$ has Not Visited Afghanistan in 2 Years.
2. McCain said that we should stay in Iraq, for as long as it takes, even it it means 100 or a 1000 years.
Mccain said, “We’re still in Japan, Germany and France” as Examples of staying for Long lengths of time.
The 3 Countries named above, have enemeies all around them and they Choose to have us there, the KeyWord is Choose as in CHOICE.
US Brigades are Downsizing in Iraq as I Type.
President Bush is now using the Term “Time Horizons” Opposed to using Obama’s “Time Frame or Timeline” of Withdrawal from Iraq.
Prime Minister Brown is Now in the Middle East and he’s also downsizing Brigades in Iraq…
President Bush is now having Direct Diplomatic Discussions all of a Sudden with Iran and this all happened this Weekend….Hmmmmm
Bush is Now having Discussions with N. Korea, Bush’s “Axis Of Evil”
All this Diplomacy, brought to you via Barack Obama.
McCain is Green with Envy, because Obama is going to be Well Recieved in these countries, on his upcoming Visits.

Try to deal with facts. The FACT is that “Al Qaeda in Iraq” (an franchise made possible for the Bush/McCain invasion of Iraq) ran into trouble when Sunni tribal leaders turned against them.
These “awakening councils” were created BEFORE THE SURGE.
Now that’s a fact!

Obama has been right about going into Iraq, half right about the surge, right about about the troop withdrawal.
He has been right about attacking Al Qaeda in Pakistan with or without the consent of the complacent government there.
He has been right about talking with Iran.
In each of these issues, he was advocating for positions ridiculed at the time months ahead of his rivals. Even the Bush administration has begun to heed his wisdom on each of these issues, changing their last years in the White House from disastrous to mediocre.

Rose,
There is no doubt that Bill Clinton is a talented speaker. That is not the issue. What is at issue is the donor list to the Clinton Library. Bill would HAVE to make that list public and that proves problematic. There was a $30 million dollar donation that have raised eyebrows, to say the least. For all the good Bill has done since leaving the White House, he also has had numerous questionable dealings. The Republicans were licking their chops with the prospect of HRC running and getting all this info into the public arena. That is the reason I chose Obama. I felt the Repugs would have sunk HRC with Bill’s antics.
Biden is the best choice for VP, HRC for Secretary of State.

To people who care about protecting America from terrorists, remember that John McCain and George Bush decided to start a war we didn’t need in Iraq, and to abandon the war on the terrorists who attacked us, in Afghanistan.
True or False:
John McCain has said on multiple occasions that Al Qaeda (a Sunni group) was being helped by Iran (a Shia country), until corrected in front of the cameras by Joe Lieberman?
TRUE
John McCain and George Bush decided to start a war we didn’t need in Iraq, denying needed resources the war on the terrorists who attacked us, in Afghanistan?
TRUE
John McCain said the invasion of Iraq would be quick, decisive and easy?

John McCain STILL does not comprehend how neutralizing Saddam, enemy of Iran, has increased Iran’s power and influence in the Middle East?

It is so incredibly irreponsible (and juvenile) to make the choice of whom to vote for with anger as the motivating force. With at least two Supreme Court nominees at stake, to vote for McCain because one is angry that Obama won and Clinton didn’t, is just unbelievably stupid. Name-calling this may be, but it is what it is. We should not be fooling around with the future of this country. McCain as president will take us back to the middle ages. Maverick? Maybe he’d like us to think so, but a maverick he ain’t. He’s proved that one over and over again.

Maliki can profit by a precipitous withdrawal. Condition withdrawal means not only safety but time to remove the assets we positioned. A precipitous withdrawal means we leave certain assets in place or destroy them by quick and dirty means.
The statement by Maliki is glib. He knows we won’t withdraw and leave those assets on the ground for his use or sale or possible transfer to unfriendlies.

Your feigned indignation, with no factual basis whatsoever…
PLUS your willingness to ignore Hillary’s statements excoriating John McCain…
PLUS the way you ignore John McCain’s opposition for justice for Lilly Ledbetter and every working woman…
PROVES the case. You are a GOP operative willing to LIE about your identity.

But good luck with the Puma, or Llama, or whatever furry creature you call yourselves! The 12 of you go “victim vote” in November!

Ok, dear, we will do this real slow, just for you.
A vote of “present” in Illinois politics is a vote for the legislation, but stating that there is some disagreement with the language or part of the proposal. It is a way to gauge how much support a bill has before it comes to a full vote. So voting “present” states that a Senator favors the bill, but with some changes.
Sometimes it’s like teaching pre-school in here.

all you obama supporters jumping for joy at Maliki’s comments miss some important items: Maliki subsequently denied that it was meant as an endorsement, as it was taken out of context. secondly, keep in mind that the whole reason the US is still in Iraq is because the country is incapable of governing itself for now. So why would you consider the word of the new prime minister as reliable, if his own government can’t take care of the safety of it’s own people? MCCain has it right, no timeline, it all depends on the safety and security of what is on the ground. In that regard, getting out of Iraq can be faster or slower, it all depends. That is the way it should be. If you have cancer, you have no distinct timeline for getting better, it all depends on the process of your treatment. that is the way it is, that is reality. Obama, like his supporters, live in a fantasy land. too bad his fantasy land is one supported by lies.

[McCain voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which would have restored the interpretation of gender bias law after an erroneous US Supreme Court ruling.]

Jane said “Sometimes it’s like teaching pre-school in here.”
Well what do you expect when you are trying to get tenure at Obamabot University?
Besides you statement about what a vote of ‘present’ is a is a total lie. In Illinois a vote of “present,” effectively sidestepping the issue, an option Obama utilized nearly 130 times as a state senator.
Illinois cronies use the present vote if they are worried about their next election. The present vote gives you political immunity. This option does not exist in every state and Obama is well aware of that. Obama’s voting present is a way to satisfy competing interests. A vote of flat out no or yes would be actually taking a stand on something.
Not like the voters in Illinois actually voted for him because they thought Obama would take a stand on anything.

Once again, McCain proves his lack of the world. Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border.

JOhn McCain does not understadn the politics.
He understands if tyou throw a bounch of soldiers and guns on the ground in a massive force…you’ll get some control on the violence.
What he doesn’t understand it seems is who supports who…and what is driving the people to uprise against each other…the ramifications for al qaeda with a civil war that would be blamed on al qaeda…what al qaeda’a fatwa is about (the occupation of Muslim lands)…the similarity in view of Muslims (correct or not) of what we are doing in Iraq with what the soviets did in afghanistan…and how that drove al qaeda to power.
I mean he doesn’t understand that al qaeda doesn’t like Iran and how they blame iran for helping the US of all people…and Iran is saying al qaeda is helping the us…
McCain gets more guns means more control of violence…he seemed to miss the part that more Americans means more angry people joining a misbegotten movement.
and this is why he was a c- student and screws borders and tribes and countries up.

The subway attack in Toyko Japan was by the group Aum Shinrikyo. Not MUSLIMS.
Irish Republican Army – terrorists – NOT MUSLIMS.
Here is another list – per the US State Dept:
Christian terrorist organizations are generally right wing in nature. They are often anti-abortion.
Army of God – USA (early 1990s-present)
The Lambs of Christ – USA (1998)
Ku Klux Klan – USA – (1865-present)
The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord (CSA) – United States[2] (1971-)
Lord’s Resistance Army – Self-proclaimed Christian terrorist group that operates in northern Uganda, it seeks to overthrow the Ugandan government and create a country based on the ten commandments.[2][2]
Nagaland Rebels – India
NONE of them are MUSLIM, but Christian.

do you know what the original fatwas were about.
the ones from Azzam…al Zawahiri…and how they conflicted.
do yuo understand that McCain’s position inflames and strengthens those fatwas and play into their ploy.
They know their strongest recruitment was when the soviets invaded afghanistan… they know that plays into recruitment.
Do you understand that al-zawahiri and OBL had problems with each other at a time even becasue of the attack on the embassy in Pakistan…
and that sunni’s in al qaeda have declared a fatwa against the us and Iran is shia…and has not…they are focused on these “muslim Land” issues…they sat they have…
McCain understands …none of this…and it is overwhelming that he makes the misbegotten statements he does.
and why you don’t understand the differences either.
If we don’t start to focus on the fissures between these factions …and what upsets who and whose loyalty is to who…
we will not win…as this surge was only successful because al qaeda needs the Muslim world to not blame them for the divisions in Iraq…but needs them to be blamed on us and our “occupation”

Sandra: actually I do get around. The vital flaw that many of you are making is that you actually believe that Obama or anyone else gives a damn about you. I am on this page because I am passing time away waiting in an airport on my way to do business that actually impacts this country.
You are deciding which pop tart to stuff in the toaster. People like YOU need hope because you hate to face the reality that your life is miserable due to your own pathetic choices. It is not the American economy or George Bush that makes your life pathetic, it is YOU.
When Obama gets in you will still be the same loser you are today only you will fell a tad bit more disillusioned because maybe you will finally get it that only you can really change anything in your own world of mediocrity.
However, my guess is that instead of facing that fact, you idiots will turn around and eat your golden calf Obama alive.

lol Jane Hussein
sorry your right…
lol
I gave McCain the benefit of the doubt…
and everyone who is claiming McCain was right on this needs to start reading the reasons that the surge “worked”
from reputable sources about terrorism and the similarities in how we gave Azzam (OBL’s mentor) money and power through the CIA to fight against our enemy …
which then turned around and led to all the bad guys that we ended up with in Afghanistan…you know the group that flew a couple of planes into our twin towers.
Mccain’s surge was successful in political circles in the quietness that came from them giving guns to a tribal insurgents that have a lot in common with the people sending out “fatwas”
and that al qaeda needs for the US to be blamed solely for it’s occupations…and not take anything away by them getting blamed for Iraq’s civil war…as they were starting to get blamed for.
and people need to read the articles now about al zawahiri going to russia a few years back and the subsequent questions that arose from the FSB’s dealing…
and Alexander Litvinenko. the spy from Russia that was killed in England may have been killed because he said soon before he was killed….he was in charge of training al zawahiri by the russian governemt.
In my opinion this war is starting to look like not a grab for oil as much as this whole war was a misbegotten land grab (pushed and backed by people like McCain) who look at it from a cold war mentality…. not looking at what the fatwas are about and how al qaeda got strong in the first place.

I can tell you by my recent survey in my church and my community. 99% of Hillary supporters say that they will stay home OR will vote for John McCain in November! In my church alone, over 100 people, only 5 people say that they are considering voting for Obama!
Do a real survey and get the answer for yourself! If you go to Trinity Church where Obama had been a 20-year member, don’t need to tell me!

John, nice try but trying to get someone’s endorsement from a pastor he has no idea what he says AND sitting in church listening to a guy for 20 years AND calling him your mentor and have him part of your campaign are…
TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
If you don’t know this, that’s fine, but the American people know the difference.
Just ONE of the reasons Obama will lose.
Thanks for trying. You lose though.

Jo,
You can play your denial games as you wish Sweetie.
Unfortunately, REALITY is going to hit you like a Mack Truck come November. In fact, it has already set in. How would you explain McCAin being on the defensive whining like a little b**** about Obama’s every move.
Is that how a 30 year Senator with all of this so called “experience” acts. Sounds like desperation, and even you know it.
McCain doesn’t have a porkchop’s chance in a Piranha tank of becoming POTUS.
Playing mind tricks on yourself is not only entertaining to me, but it’s not going to be pretty when the lights come on SWEETIE POOH.

This election was basically over the moment Reverend Wright appeared. He’s the reason that everyone I know who was voting for him, dropped their support.
Thank you Reverend Wright. And thank you also for telling us the truth about Obama – that he’s just a politician saying what he needs to say to get elected.

So why would you ever seek an endorsement from someone you have never been involved with? Simple. Pandering to the religious right. Not because he believes in it, but for votes.

Why did McCain say that the shia nation of Iran was helping the sunni Al Qaeda?
What happens if Joe Lieberman is not there to correct his friend’s fundamentally flawed understanding of the different Islamic groups?
Don’t worry, the worst thing that could happen is McCain could start a WAR.
Posted by: John's conscience | July 21, 2008, 1:13 pm 1:13 pm
The fact of the matter is, if Obama had been in charge, there would be no surge and disaster and chaos would rule the day in Iraq. He has poor judgment. Combine that with 20 year associations with thugs and anti americans, and he’s not presidential material, not by a long shot.
Posted by: Rob | July 21, 2008, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm
I don’t understand Obama supporters. I have yet to see anything qualifying him in either experience or skill for the position of Commander in Cheif. He’s a great orator, has a magnetic personality, but he makes decisions like a juvenile. He has a plan for our military without ever having been involved in what the military is doing or even what conditions they are in. The only way to win under our current war restrictions is to leave on our terms in our time not by anyone elses. It will send a clear message to the world and the terrorists that America is not a force that can be manipulated or subdued, we stay till we are done. Obama wants to cut and run which is attactive for all involved, the exception being those who know the price of becoming a LOOSER in the sight of our ememies. To quit is to loose, there is no way around that, no pretty word no other way to put it, quitters never win they are always loosers. We will pay a horrible price if we quit or surrender to anyone elses terms. What we are doing in Iraq is not new, we rebuilt every nation we’ve stepped in. We are winning, let us finish the job.

What a simpleton you and your “friends” are then.
You are taking a 30 second sound bite from a 30 year career and basing your “judgement” on that? Wright is a highly respected Reverend and has done more good than you will ever do.
You have said some awfully distrubing things on this blog. Can we all now assume you are a very distrubed person with no worth whatsoever? How would you like to have something taken out of context and have it define your very person?
We shall now consider you disturbed.

Jo, I was one of those who changed my mind after Rev. Wright scandal came out, so you’re right. All the trips to Iraq in the world won’t erase that from people’s minds. People just don’t put that much thought into all this choreographed campaign, they remember the simple things, like a 20 year friendship with Rev. Wright.

and jo, samantha and the rest
some of us have met both of these candidates…
they both care about the country… and the people voting …deeply.
the problem is McCain has smarts in a small category… compared to Obama… and he is in the wrong party unfortunately the republican party is weighed heavily down by big corporate lobbyists that happen to be the same lobbyists that got us the situation we are in…the same lobbyists that have protected the top 5% of Americans above all else…
that is the bottom line…Mccain has been around but Obama is smarter than he is.
I saw Mccain a few times and Obama many over the past year and a half…
they are both good men.
but McCain is not quick enough about enough things that a President needs to know…
and because it is difficult for Americans to understand the complexities of the middle east…John McCain’s cowboy diplomacy…doesn’t work and America just sees a war hero…not the fact that the war hero doesn’t understand the differences and conflicts within the muslim world.
John McCain is a good man stuck with a bad team and bad logic.
Remember he was one of the main guys who pushed for this war…and it had very little to do with WMD. I am starting to think it had to do with Russia his cold war emntality and his complete misunderstanding of the politics and diplomacy of the area.
Posted by: dl | July 21, 2008, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm
John, again, nice try, but Americans know better.
Twenty years vs seeking an endorsement from someone you don’t even know.
If you can’t see it, the majority of Americans do. So you lose again.
I love the desperation in your posts though. Speaks volumes. Lol.

You could make all these comparisons in the world, but Americans don’t have the time.

Gaffe: During a press availability, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that he’s been concerned by “a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several day,” including “reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia.” But, as TPM’s Greg Sargent points out, Czechoslovakia hasn’t existed in 15 years. This isn’t the first time McCain has made this mistake. At a debate in Oct. 2007, McCain said that America needs to “have a missile defense system in place in Czechoslovakia and Poland.”
Is this the best the Repugs have?

REPORTER: “We’ve learned that exports to Iran increased by tenfold during the Bush Administration, the biggest export was cigarettes. Given that the, yeah… supposedly that the…”

Norm,
Obama is smart.
McCain virtually last in his class.
Obama understands the terrorists that attacked us are in Afghanstan/Pakistan.
McCain does not.
Obama knows the difference between different Shia and Sunni.
McCain is ignorant of this this key feature of the Middle East.
Obama wants to focus on renewable energy.
McCain says global warming is a threat, but shows no commitment to renewable energy.
McCain wants to remove the tax break that companies get for providing health insurance to their employees and retirees.
McCain wants health insurance companies to be regulated by the state of their choosing by simply reincorporating in a friendly state. Say goodbye to consumer protection laws. Say hello to all disputes going to industry sponsored “arbitrators” that side with the health companies 99% of the time.
McCain refused to back the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. (Ledbetter was almost retired when she found out that her male supervisors had discriminated against her for her whole career. She went to court, proved her case, and had the decision overturned by the Republican Supreme Court because she didn’t file her suit when she was first hired, even though the salaries were secret!)
John McCain has praised the economic and regulatory policies that have CAUSED the subprime/credit crisis. His confessed ignorance on the subject is what we expect from his 5th worst place at university!

2 – McCain as POTUS – Donkeys are incapable or winning thoroughbred horse races. With every passing day, Pappy McCain continues to dig a hole that he’s already in DEEPER AND DEEPER. Unfortunately, he’s digging his own political grave, which is quite fitting.

Why is it not? Because it’s McCAIN!!! The one guy the public will trust and will not let be denigrated.
Any other candidate and Obama could probably win. But not with McCain.

The only thing silly about 2008 is Obama’s candidacy. This guy is a one-issue candidate. That he gave an anti-war speech before the war.
He changes his position whichever way the political winds blew.
He changes his position more often than most people change their dirty socks.
The candidate is a joke and the media is trying to foist it’s candidate because they need some black guy to be president. The New York times refused an OP-ED from McCain speaks volumes about that paper’s objectivity.
The main stream media gave up on journalistic principles. They have sunken to the level of Rush Limbaugh.
Fox News seems to be fair and balanced. Americans should be outraged at the unprincipled folks in the MSM.

Was he Muslim?? What about Dylan Kliebold and Eric Harris of Columbine fame? They certainly should be considered terrorists by anyone’s standards. Were they Muslim??? You paranoiacs who just don’t like Obama because he is black should simply be a “man” about it, and admit it. You will pick up on every stupid, ridiculous, petty, idiotic smear or innuendo, and just run with it to make Obama seem unfit to be our President, when in fact you know deep down he’s gonna make it! So get used to it, see beyond his skin color, and STFU. Thanks.

Nat Turner is funny. I am so happy that he has learned a new word. He must of hung out with Obama’s uber educated elitist supporters. Poor Nat, no one told him that after the brainwashing is over he won’t be allowed within 50 feet of their homes.
But sincerely, congrats! I heard that those DNA test results got you released from prison.

sandy
you’re a moron
and maybe should meet a few more dems that were supporting Hillary…
I support Hillary I just bought a t-shirt and sent money to alleviate her debt…where the small group that is so angry has left her high and dry to fix her own debt.
Most Hillary supporters as much as whack jobs like you want to spin it…are supporting Obama.
It’ sad that you don’t know that the numbers for people who say they would defect (and this was right after she conceded) were similar to that of almost any candidate after a primary…and those numbers shrink …when?
after the convention…so please read something.

Roger Miller,
Issue 1. McCain has proposed removing the tax break that encourages employers to provide health insurance to their workers.
Issue 2. McCain has proposed that health insurance companies be regulated by the state of their own choice (by simply reincorporating in a friendly state). Say goodbye to consumer protection legislation. Say hello to all disputes going to industry sponsored “arbitrators”.
Issue 3. Lilly Ledbetter was close to retirement when she found out that her male supervisors had illegally discriminated against her for her whole career. She proved her case in court, but it was overturned by the Republican Supreme Court since she didn’t file when she first started work. The Congress attempted to restore the law to that upheld since inception, but it was FILLIBUSTERED (no up or down vote) and John McCain supported the filibusters.
Issue 4. Iraq is telling us they don’t want a permanent American occupation. “A withdrawal over 16 months, like proposed by Barack Obama, would be good.” Only McCain wants a PERMANENT occupation in Iraq.
Issue 5. Leaving Al Qaeda unmolested. There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq franchise until we created the opportunity by disposing Saddam. The Sunni awakening councils turned against Al Qaeda, with our encouragement, before the surge. Meanwhile Bin Laden is quite comfortable in Pakistan, the direct beneficiary of the American invasion of Iraq.
Issue 6. Iran has increased their power in the Middle East four fold, since we took out their adversary with the invasion of Iraq. One consequence is that Isreal is less safe.
Issue 7. Right after McCain rapped up the GOP nomination, he gave a speech praising the look-the-other-way policies of the Bush administration responsible for the subprime loan/credit crunch crisis that threatens a long bout of stagflation.

JJ,
Ignore APIG1082. Just another morbidly obese PUMA gal, drowning her sorrows in Hagen Daaz and pork rinds. 1082 refers to…never mind, LOL!

When they were talking about liberal media spin for Obama, this is it.
There is a huge difference between pulling out no matter what and reducing troop levels if situations warrant it. It’s exactly Bush’s position.

Obama for Community Organizer.
Solid qualifications for that and he can do no harm where there are zero expectations and accountability.
He’d make a fine social worker.

Ok, Sandy. I took a look at your website. All I can say is “Sorry”. What a pathetic bunch of simpering whiners. PUMA poems and songs. Long laments on how you are all in “pain”. Whoa, the injustice of it all.
I especially enjoyed the “I am PUMA” sung to the words of “I am Woman”. How very original. Yawn!

I can’t wait til all you PUMA gals have your little Convention in DC. It will go a long way to prove my point that the average Puma (meow) gal is over 200lbs. Hope they stow away lots of pastries for you!!

Smile for the cameras, with his training wheels on.
Perhaps he’ll stop hiding from McCain debates ?

Arguing who is “smarter” is useless and senseless since it is completely subjective. McCain is a fighter pilot which means by default he has brains. McCain knows the terrorists are in Pakistan and Afghanistan, he also knows you don’t win a war by running like a whipped dog.
The global warming/renewable resource debate is a farce. Global warming is happening but there is insufficient evidence to prove it is caused by human activity which is why it is still a scientific hypothesis and not a theory.
McCain only speaks sense on the matter of oil. It takes decades for real innovations to become commonplace devices (this is indisputable just look at history), in the meantime you have to make due with what you’re using. Besides fuel, an enormous part of our economy and products are based on crude processed materials. Drilling for our own oil only makes sense. Allowing it will drop the future’s market on oil which is out of control because everyone will know in a few years America will start to produce more. We might be sitting on a huge load of oil, all of our data on how much oil is under our continental shelf are from studies conducted 25yrs ago. (thanks to democrat exploration ban in 1981) With todays technology who knows how much more can be found and safely extracted that wasn’t even possible of discovery decades ago.
The lilly case, I don’t recall anyone forcing her to work for that company. Last I checked work is voluntary not forced.
ALL of congress pretty much praised the policies that have caused the current credit situation, congress in general is out of control and needs to be replaced. (term limits, they need term limits)
As for my previous spelling of “looser” I stand corrected it’s spelled “loser”, my fingers got away from my brain.
My beef with Obama is the change he advocates is socialism, cowardice, and isn’t change at all. He hasn’t made any indication of what his vaunted “CHANGE” is. We KNOW he won’t CHANGE a nearly 30 year ban on oil exploration. He won’t “CHANGE” on run like a little girl from our enemies. (his party has been advocating that since Vietnam)
Finally, if the enemy would rather see him elected then I don’t care if my allies would like him or not I can’t vote for him. The world is looking at us now like they did when Thomas Jefferson was in office, like a fledgling child that needs to be guided by the “parents”. Europe advocated paying off the barbary pirates for decades, (america ended the barbary pirates) europe advocated ignoring the threat of Napoleon, the ignoring of Germany, the ignoring of facism, the ignoring of communism. They wanted to ignore the fact that Sadam Hussein had slaughtered tens of thousands of his own people, had violated the terms of his peace agreement, had not disarmed. I could care less if these people would rather talk to Obama, they do NOT have America’s security or interests in mind they have their own. We do not need to be isolationists, but the world needs to remember why you don’t mess with the U.S.A., the last time resulted in two atomic explosions. We are the most generous and fun loving nation on earth and will gladly help out our neighbors however we can. But when we’re angry you better be walking small. They have forgotten that and our enemies are counting on our capitulation. The terrorists know they can’t beat us, but they also know if we quit they win by default, and Obama is a quitter just like the rest of his party save one (who’s now an independent).
Posted by: Norm | July 21, 2008, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm
Norm: With all that rambling I guess you didn’t take the time to realize that the President of Iraq is all for the withdrawal himself, not to mention that Bush is on board now himself, so calling Obama and his supporters quitters is a waste of air.
Posted by: vote4peace | July 21, 2008, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm
Norm,
Graduating from the Naval College 894th out of a class of 899 means McCain was a D- student. This means he was either too stupid to do the work or too lazy. Which means by default, he’s not qualified.
