Webb to Remain in Senate, No longer VP Candidate
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe Reports: Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., long rumored to be a leading candidate for Sen. Barack Obama’s choice as his vice-presidential running mate, announced Monday that he intends to remain in his Senate post.
"Last week I communicated to Senator Obama and his presidential campaign my firm intention to remain in the United States Senate, where I believe I am best equipped to serve the people of Virginia and this country," Webb said in a statement. "Under no circumstances will I be a candidate for Vice President."
Webb’s announcement may be seen by some as a surprise, since as recently as a few weeks ago Webb’s Capitol Hill colleagues were referring to him as "Mr. Vice President", as Obama’s close friend Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., teasingly did on the Senate floor in June. But Webb said Monday that he believes his skills are best suited to the Senate, not the number two spot.
"A year and a half ago, the people of Virginia honored me with election to the U.S. Senate," Webb said in his statement. "I entered elective politics because of my commitment to strengthen America’s national security posture, to promote economic fairness, and to increase government accountability. I have worked hard to deliver upon that commitment, and I am convinced that my efforts and talents toward those ends are best served in the Senate."
Although he will not be serving as Obama’s running mate, Webb promised to do all he can to help the Democratic candidate win the Oval Office. If Obama can carry Virginia, it would mark the first time a Democrat had pulled off the feat since 1964.
"At this time I am also renewing my commitment to work hard to make sure that Senator Obama wins both Virginia and the presidency this November," said Webb. "He is a man who speaks eloquently about our national goals and calls for the practical solutions that must be put into place to obtain them. I will proudly campaign for him."
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said that he was pleased that Webb will continue serving the Old Dominion state.
"While I believe that Senator Jim Webb would have made a great vice president, it is good news for Virginia that he will continue to represent the Commonwealth in the U.S. Senate," Kaine said in a statement. "In a very short period of time, Jim has made us proud to call him our Senator. His service to Virginia and to the country has been invaluable and he and Mark Warner are going to make a great team after this November’s election."
Webb was regarded as a strong contender to share the ticket with Obama in part because of the junior Virginia senator’s strengths in foreign policy and military affairs. Webb served in Vietnam and was later awarded the Navy Cross, the Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, and two Purple Hearts. He also finished first in his class of 243 at the Marine Corps Officers’ Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. In 1987, Webb became the first Naval Academy graduate to serve in the military and then become Secretary of the Navy, a position he held under President Ronald Reagan.
The Senator hails from a family of fighters. As he wrote in his 2004 book "Born Fighting", Webb’s ancestors have fought in every major American war. Not only did Webb carry on that tradition, but so did his son Jimmy, a Marine who served in Iraq. During his victorious 2006 campaign for Senate against incumbent Republican George Allen, Webb often wore Jimmy’s old combat boots on the trail.
But Webb’s accomplishments are not limited to military service and politics. He has written eight books, including six best-selling novels, as well as working as a screenwriter and producer in Hollywood. Webb even has an Emmy thanks to his PBS coverage of Marines in Beirut.
As senator, Webb serves on the Foreign Relations, Armed Services, Veterans Affairs, and Joint Economic committees. However, his time in office has not been immune from controversy. At a White House reception on November 28, 2006, Webb declined to stand in line to have his picture taken with President Bush. In 2007, one of Webb’s aides was arrested for carrying the Senator’s loaded pistol into a Capitol Hill office building.
But there have also been some highlights. In January 2007, Webb delivered the Democratic response to Bush’s State of the Union address, a speech in which Webb hit out at Bush’s handling of the Iraq war, which, like Obama, Webb opposed from the start. Just last month, Webb spearheaded the passage of the new GI Bill, an accomplishment that Webb said gave him "renewed confidence that the Congress can indeed work effectively across party lines and address the concerns of our citizens."

You have to wonder about all these potential VP nominees running AWAY from an Obama ticket. It seems that regardless of the visibility they might receive, they don’t want to attach themselves yet again to a losing Democratic ticket. Ten years from now, who will even remember Gore and Kerry’s running mates (Lieberman and Edwards). Come to think of it, who will even remember those losers, Gore or Kerry.

How very odd…………that someone wouldn’t want to be on Obama’s ticket. I don’t think it would happen unless there are serious doubts about Obama himself.

Obama will pick Clinton. Anybody that doesn’t realize this, isn’t very smart. Webb would not have been a good pick because he has said a few sexist things and had two messy divorces. Besides, he is not a very good politician and has a tendency to inssrt foot in mouth.

Who is running away from Obama’s ticket?
Posted by: Kevin | July 7, 2008, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm
Gov. Ted Strickland probably wasn’t on the list in the first place. People keep saying he is popular in Ohio, but he is not that popular. His popularity is moderate at best, just like Charlie Crist is in Florida. Jim Webb, IMO, wasn’t a strong candidate. he comes with too much baggage. If you are willing to live with Webb’s bagagge, why not pick Hillary and live with her baggage? At least she brings cash and incredible heft.

Does he know something we do not know, yet? Or could it be that someone who has so many more credentials, so much more knowledge, and so much more experience and wisdom would find it too stressful and tedious to provide the amen corner for someone who knows so little? He surely has made a wise decision.

Daschle won’t do. South Dakota is a red state and out of reach for Dems. Honestly I don’t know who else would fit the bill. Webbs background is on point for everything Obama needs in VP.
*Born in Missouri (purple state)
*Senator of Virgina (red states leaning blue)
*Vietnam war Viet
*Served as the first Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs then Secretary of the Navy under the Regan administration
*Gained the highest medal awarded in the Navy

Hillary carries TOO much baggage. And polls suggest even if Obama selects her as VP her supporters are still likely to vote McCain or stay home.
Also. The Republicans would have a field day replaying the debates of Clinton attacking Obama. Not a good fit.

Vanessa it’s going to be Biden.
He couldn’t pick Webb really anyway unfortunately…
He couldn’t pick a military guy because it is not what he is saying is the solution and that makes him look like he is weak on military and focusing on something he says is not the problem here.
Plus those papers he wrote about women…that would have ended upa very large hornets nest.
It’s goign to be biden.
Hillary has the problem that the biggest thing a VP needs to do is catch the country heaven forbid something happen to the President…
The long primary (whether you like her or not) would leave suspicion that would hobble any Presidency she would try to do.
Plus Biden is the smartest guy about foreign policy on the hill…
and no one including hillary would want to go up on a one on one debate with him about anything.
McAuliffe guessed it’s goingto be Biden today too.

Nobama clearly doesn’t qualify to run for the Governor of any State much less the Presidency. A well written speech by Nobama stating that he now realizes this to finally end the puppet farce would be the right and timely thing for him to do.

now know why I am VOTING McCain!
Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election:
CAPITAL GAINS TAX
MCCAIN
0% on home sales up to $500,000
per home (couples) McCain does not
propose any change in existing
home sales income tax.
OBAMA
28% on profit from ALL home sales
How does this affect you?
If you sell your home and make a profit, you
will pay 28% of your gain on taxes.
If you are heading toward retirement
and would like to down-size your
home or move into a retirement
community, 28% of the money you
make from your home will go to taxes. This
proposal will adversely affect the
elderly who are counting on the income
from their homes as part of their retirement income.
DIVIDEND TAX
MCCAIN 15% (no change)
OBAMA 39.6%
How will this affect you?
If you have any money invested in stock
market, IRA, mutual funds,
college funds, life insurance, retirement
accounts, or anything that pays
or reinvests dividends, you will now
be paying nearly 40% of the money
earned on taxes if Obama become president.
The experts predict that ‘higher
tax rates on dividends and capital gains
would crash the stock market yet
do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.
INCOME TAX
MCCAIN (no changes)
Single making 30K – tax $4,500
Single making 50K – tax $12,500
Single making 75K – tax $18,750
Married making 60K- tax $9,000
Married making 75K – tax $18,750
Married making 125K – tax $31,250
OBAMA
(reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)
Single making 30K – tax $8,400
Single making 50K – tax $14,000
Single making 75K – tax $23,250
Married making 60K – tax $16,800
Married making 75K – tax $21,000
Married making 125K – tax $38,750
Under Obama your taxes will
more than double!
How does this affect you? No explanation
needed. This is pretty
straight forward.
INHERITANCE TAX
MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)
OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax
How does this affect you? Many families
have lost businesses,
farms and ranches, and homes
that have
been in their families
for generations because they could not
afford the inheritance tax.
Those willing their assets to loved
ones will not only lose them to
these taxes.
NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA
* New government taxes proposed on
homes that are more than
2400 square feet
* New gasoline taxes (as if
gas weren’t high enough already)
* New taxes on natural resources
consumption (heating
gas, water, electricity)
AVOID THE PAIN VOTE MCCAIN!

He probably doesn’t want to be swiftboated by the corrupt lying Republicans…who want to destroy every genuine US military hero that happens to think differently.
Maybe Webb should have deserted his post and partied in Alabama during Vietnam…like Bush Junior. That would’ve made him somebody all Republicans could RESPECT.

Can we quit saying that Obama opposed the war from the start cause he didn’t? He made a speech, thats it. He also said in 2004 that there was little difference between him and George Bush on the war… and he’s switched between those two positions ever since.
Posted by: Giovanni | July 7, 2008, 8:50 pm 8:50 pm
I second Molly’s sentiments. I am a Rep. (80% of the time), but voted for Hillary, because I like both McCain and Hillary and would be happy with either. Never Obama…and it’s not racist…it’s wanting an experienced leader, with no questionable love for THIS country, first and foremost. Obama should try sticking to the Senate and spend time at home raising his daughters (unlike all 3 of his parents who bailed on him). McCain’s kids are grown and Chelsea too….so they can completely focus on the Presidency (Hillary would have been an amazing hard working President, maybe they’ll even offer the VP spot to her).
I love Rendell, what about him? Is he too, out of the running?

I am so glad that Webb decided not to run with Obama. It seems that everyday there is someone else distancing themselves from Obama……they, evidently are see the “true” Backtrack Obama for what he really is, and “empty suit with no substance”. I find it ironic that many NoBama supporters basically put McCain down and made fun of him for his military experience, but praised Webb for his. Obama supporters, just like Obama, flip flop and talk out of the sides of their mouth. Again, I applaud you, Mr. Webb, for declining to be associated with Obama as VP……it seems as if that hill to the Presidency is getting steeper and steeper for NoBama……and, looks like McCain has moved even closer to Obama in the polls, and McCain is not spending near the money NoBama is! Finally, America is waking up and rejecting Obama!

Hmmmm……losing a really good VP candidate, going against Iraq then for Iraq and now America is winning in Iraq, and now Hillary supporters don’t like Obama even more. Seems like NoBama is imploding! I used to think McCain was honest. Obama has been saying the same thing about Iraq since the beginning: get out. target 16 months but refine for troop safety.
Steve Colbert had a great performance he gave infront of Bush. Steve praised Bush’s consistency. He said Bush believed the same thing on Wed as he believed on Mon. . . no mater what happend on Tues. Said differently, only an idiot wouldn’t refine his position as new facts come about and only a liar would say they wouldn’t refine their position.

My take on all this is the following Mccain is too old, even now he remains much to out of touch with the problems the average person on main street is faced with in the Bush wreck of the last eight years. Nobama started out as a rock star to those that he hypnotized in the early days of the campaigning. Now that the his choice of questionable friends and demeaning statements, pretentious and pompous behavior is out along with his less than approachable wife people no longer have that warm and fuzzy feeling for him. Not to mention is he trust worthy? well some won’t take the chance and after all why should we it isn’t as if he has any experience. So what many people are left with is two poor choices for the presidency. Those of course that are looking out side of the same old talk box of the two party system will be setting the stage for real change in the sense of identifying and voting for that third and fourth candidate that hasn’t been bought out by interest groups and especially CNN which we all know is very sexist in their reporting of the news. Like Ross Perot’s party of a few years ago I believe that the Socialist, Independent and Libertarian party will be the true benefactors in 2009 and going forward.
Socialist party 2009

As the Obama people have been saying for months, this is the candidate of change.
But he is showing super delegates and the Democrats who have supported him that, as every day goes by, he is becoming not so much the candidate of change, but the reason to change candidates.
And it’s possible that in Denver super delegates are going to do just that and give him their own seal of disapproval that he can take back with him to Illinois.

What about all those politicians and super delegates that are supposed to “fall in line”? It does seem many are distancing themselves from Obama but, then say they are behind him 100%. Anyone keeping track of how many have openly refused the VP position? The Obama campaign is showing signs of disintegrating.

Despite the views of some dinosaurs from West Virginia or New Jersey, I am hopeful for a new politic in this country. We see bits of hatred and various “isms”, but I think people are tired of being manipulated by false issues. People want politicians to do work worthy of the American people and our history an tradition – not bitter vengeful people. I believe that in 2008 a lot of these old issues will be settled for good.

I agree…even though i was a big Obama/Webb ticket supporter..over the last few weeks I have changed my mind..the 2 differing stances between the two senators…while Webb voted for telecom immunity..Obama does not..wile webb is for offshore drilling..Obama is not…I really believe Webb is awesome but he is right..he would be better suited in the senate, where he can push agenda.=0)

I vote Sen. Jim Webb for Barack’s VP!
Everyone should read his new book ‘A Time to Fight’ and then tell me what you think, my opinion is that he has a great view and grasp of the world past and present.
He’s the man.
How can I persuade Barack to choose him?

I just found out on MSNBC that Webb didn’t want to turn over materials to the Obama VP vetters, apparently he made comments about women in the military and he didn’t want to revisit it, I guess never mind about Webb?
*** Webb no longer on the list: The second major Dem short-lister has taken himself off the VP list. Jim Webb, apparently after being asked for vetting materials, decided not to cooperate with the vetters and took himself out of the running. Most reports indicate he didn’t want to re-litigate his past statements on women in the military among other comments. Webb becomes the second big Democrat — Ted Strickland was the first — to make a Sherman-esque statement regarding being picked as Obama’s VP. There’s one Virginia elected official who remains on Obama’s list: Gov. Tim Kaine.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE ATTACKING OBAMA, TIME FOR YOU ALL TO REALIZE THAT NOT BECAUSE OBAMA IS BLACK HE WILL NOT MAKE GOOD PRESIDENT, THOSE WHO SAY THEY ARE DEM AND WILL NOT SUPPORT OBAMA JUST CANNOT BELIVE THAT A MAN THAT CARE LESS ABOUT COLORE WHO IS COLORED WILL BE PRESIDENT.
WEBB HAS THE MENTALITY OF MANY THAT HE CANNOT SEE HIM SELF SECOND TO MAN OF COLOR, GIVE IT UP COLORED MINDED. GOD CREATED US ALL REGARDLESS OF COLOR
