What Did Obama Tell House Democrats About His Symbolism?

The Washington Post has an interesting quote this morning from the meeting Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, held with House Democrats yesterday afternoon.

"I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions," Obama said, a witness told the Post.

Republicans and others are jumping on the quote as evidence of Obama’s more egoistic impulses, but other Democrats in the room today suggest that the quote is out of context and twists Obama’s meaning to mean the complete opposite of what he was saying.

"His entire point of that riff was that the campaign is NOT about him," says a House Democratic staffer. The Post "left out the important first half of the sentence which was something along the lines of ‘it has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. Its about America. I have just become a symbol.’"

Other staffers with whom I spoke back that up, and a Democratic Congressman who isn’t a particular fan of Obama agrees, saying that Obama preceded that quote with something along the lines of, ‘Those people in Germany weren’t excited about me.  They were excited by the prospect of America getting back to being all it could be.’"

House Democrats are hunting around to see if anyone recorded the closed-door meeting, so we can see just what the context was in which Mr. Obama discussed his symbolism to the world.

The staffer’s explanation sounds like the same thing. Obama is still a symbol of some vast awakening on the planet?
Sheesh. Bring out the kleig lights.

I am worried about Senator Obama. It sounds like he is or is becoming mentally ill.

Obama is a symbol , that true.
a symbol of how low we’ve sunk as democrats that this empty preening hollow bush-like man is considered anything like JFK

What about the free concert that was held before Obama spoke in Berlin. Do you think that is why many of those people attended?

Obama’s campaign is about one thing- OBAMA.
Ask not what Obama can do for you but what you can do for Obama.
He is unqualified and presumptuous.
Can we please get Hillary back. None of these jokers know anything about the economy.
we are screwed without her.

Obama is very egotistical. He is a symbol of himself that David Axelrod created. He is certainly not a symbol of America. His attention is also based on successful free media blitz wherever he campaigns. Not to mention, he has access to some deep pockets. It is difficult picturing him representing all of America to the rest of the world when he attended a racist church for 20 years. The same church where his mentor Rev Wright preached “God Damn America.”

Well, at least Jake told people that the quote is being taken completely out of context. I’m sure Fox News will have non-stop coverage of this non-story for an entire week.

Posted by: Mike | July 30, 2008, 9:29 am 9:29 am

Milbank’s Post piece also had a factual error. Obama made his “dilettante” comment to Tory opposition leader David Cameron, not Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

I would guess they will be printing some kind of correction in the post…but I have to say
the proof will be seen by whom he chooses as his vp.
does he choose someone that makes him comfortable and is chosen by his comfort…or someone that makes America comfortable in his being elected.

It does not matter how you read the quote. It still wreaks with egotism. Americans can see through Obama. He is a puppet.

, “Those people in Germany weren’t excited about me. They were excited by the prospect of America getting back to being all it could be.”
and this is actually more frightening. The people of germany don’t give a rat’s behind about America. they want to tear us down.

And yet he still can’t break past a single digit lead over McCain, who’s been sleepwalking and/or bumbling his way through the campaign. Mickey Mouse would be in a double digit lead in a Presidential race against a Republican this election. Where Obama thinks he carries a mandate for the entire Country bewilders me. Time will tell though, maybe he’ll win the election by a landslide this Fall. I think it’s more likely though that the Democrats did the same thing as they’ve done in the past and nominated the weakest candidate they had again.

Posted by: alpaig52 | July 30, 2008, 9:35 am 9:35 am

So first we have “I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions,” which then is supposedly out of context to really be “it has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. Its about America. I have just become a symbol.”. So the first is him being what he wants america to be and the other, taking to far deference to the dems, is he’s what everyone wants us to be…..its still all about him from his point of view. As far as it being about him there is no difference between the statements.
As far as ego the second one is even worse. Its one thing to say “I’m god” its another to say “everyone thinks I’m god”

Is Barry channeling Tom Cruise? Has he found his Inner Thetan. This guy is very weird. but then, America likes weird. We revel in Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears, Hulk Hogan and Dog the Bounty Hunter. Now we will have Barack the Messiah and Nancy the Planet Saver. When the National Enquirer publishes its photo of Obama standing alongside some alien from beyond the Galaxy, it won’t be a product of Photoshop.

“Is this any more ‘arrogant’ than a man who claims he has won wars…”
If you’re parroting the “Mission accomplished” talking point nonsense, consider this: The crew of the carrier put up that banner, not the President. Further consider that “mission” is a far cry from “battle”, which is a far cry from “campaign”, which is a far cry from “war”.
Nice try, lefty!

Alvin, you can talk all you want about the Republican candidates affiliations with Pastors Parsley and Hagee. While you may disagree with these ministers, they pale in comparison to Rev Wright. They have not preached about God “damning” America.

Interesting that you’re scrambling and spinning more than the Obama campaign to defend this remark. I don’t necessarily want a barrier breaker as president, I don’t want a rock star, I just want someone who can do this very difficult job effectively. That would be a big change!

Whenever Europeans fall in love with an American candidate, it’s always pretty good for the other guy. Americans don’t want to be Europeans, and they certainly don’t want to be told what to do by Europeans. McCain should offer to spring for another junket abroad for the Senator from Berlin, er, Illinois.

Posted by: KG | July 30, 2008, 9:53 am 9:53 am

I think the Obamanation should stand up and demand that McCain gets the press time he so deserves. Word for word that comes from his mouth daily. I am so sick of when McCain cries the press jumps. Just goes to show you how our nation is really being ran and by whom!

Bob Herbert said it best yesterday:
“I’ve never seen anyone so roundly criticized for such grievous offenses as giving excellent speeches and urging people of different backgrounds to take a chance on working together. How dare he? And 200,000 people turned out to hear him in Berlin. Unforgivable.
The man has been taken to task for promoting hope, threatened with mutilation by Jesse Jackson for suggesting that a lot of black fathers could do better by their kids and had his patriotism called into question because he wants to wind down a war that most Americans would dearly love to be rid of”.

What is wrong with being a “symbol”, I ask? That is mostly what all heads of democratic states are, since in a democracy, the People, not just one man, govern! A president is only as good as the team he chooses to govern with, and in this democracy, with the system of checks and balances, all leaders of the three components: the Executive, the Legislature, and the Supreme Court, are (guess what?) symbols of our Federalism! Capisce?

As good as much of Obama’s trip was, it’s going to backfire bigtime for him. It put his ego and pride on display. He looked like he thought himself King of the World, though he’s still just a freshman Senator. In Berlin especially he overplayed his strength, his rock star magnetism and lofty oratory and it came off as runaway ego. Still he’s right on the issues and has alot of potential, but he’s got to stay grounded and humble.

The comment is not a big deal even if taken in complete isolation. The real concern is in how people can take issue with it.
In church people say, “Lord, make me a channel of your peace.” Is that considered weird or presumptious?

Jezz,
How can you people twist a statement, that is in fact the essence of humility. Obama is not scary, Mc Cain is scary. Have you read about his irrational tirads? How about his flip on reducing the deficit. Or do you people really believe in supply-side, er, voodoo economics?
If McCain wins we all loose.
Further, YOU should all read about micro loans and micro financing. It is a very conservative approach to helping poor people to help themselves. This is Obamas real “liberal” program for the poor. His mother working for the U.S. embassy in Indonesia was one of the original developers of the concept.
IF Obama hasn’t opened a double digit lead, it is because he’s black, and xenophobia, a global tribal phenomena, is stopping him. If America elects Obama we will be the first Nation to really break barriers. Something that could only happen in America, and Obama knows it and that is why he is proud of the U.S.

Posted by: Sam | July 30, 2008, 10:12 am 10:12 am

Another staged comment. It is all over the blogs and various articles about Obama’s arragance.
Now, we will see a well thought out effort in all of his appearances to say: “It is not about me.”
I thought America was smart, but they fall for this guy’s manipulation everytime.
They gave Michelle a make over – now we are going to work on getting Obama humble (when he is not) but they will work very hard on statements like. “It is not about me.” We are going to hear alot of this from now on.

What is it with the “objective” newsmedia. At last night’s event…
“When Obama walked on stage at the McCormick Center, many journalists in the audience leapt to their feet and applauded enthusiastically after being told not to do so. During a two-minute break halfway through the event, which was broadcast live on CNN, journalists ran to the stage to snap photos of Obama.” The journalists jumped to their feet to give him another standing ovation when he left.
Those people are in the wrong line of work, they should not be journalists.

Posted by: GS | July 30, 2008, 10:22 am 10:22 am

Great political coverage, but I have two questions:
1. I realized that the media has started using “arrogance” to describe Obama; is this because McCain blasted the media for too close to Obama? this is sad. Just because somebody is confident does not equate to arrogance.
2. I also realized that anytime McCain says something, it does not stick, but when Obama says something, you guys in the media spend days unend dicing and splicing. Is this fair? McCain just flipflopped on taxes, he lied in his ads, and many more, if it were Obama, you guys would have jumped all over him. This is why a recent study suggest that the media gives 72% negative coverage to Obama–this is conspiracy to bring him down.

-What is wrong with being a “symbol”, I ask? That is mostly what all heads of democratic states are-
In democracies heads of democratic states are elected “representatives” of the will of the people (in theory, at least)…not symbols.
-the Executive, the Legislature, and the Supreme Court, are (guess what?) symbols of our Federalism!-
They are institutions of the “structure” of our “political system.”
The decentralized balance of power between federal government and state governments forms our federalism.
Obama has concocted his own symbolism and some have drank a gallon of it.

I’m a Republican that has become disenchanted with the GOP (to say the least). Right now I’m wavering between voting for Bob Barr and Obama. The anti-Obama comments I see here are just further evidence of how screwed up the GOP has become.
Obama gave an excellent speech in Berlin. If his words had come out of the mouth of Ronald Reagan, we’d all be falling all over ourselves.
The extreme right wing loonies are just as much to blame for the “enthusiasm gap” plaguing McCain as is McCain himself. You folks need to get it thru your heads: Americans, even those of us who were once considered conservative (before the extreme right wing took power over the GOP), are sick of the spin, the deceit, the politics as usual. If you want McCain to have any chance whatsoever, I suggest you take the frothing-at-the-mouth down about 9 notches, and stop alienating people in your very own party.

Look at all the Americans who are trying to pick a fleck out of Obama’s eye while a beam is gorging out theirs. He is just too educated, too young, speaks too well, too much of a family man, his wife and children seem to be too intelligent. Heads of state seem to be open to talking about resolving world problems with this Obama. It actually seems like the United States would not have to bear the brunt of fighting for democracy around the world, banking wars while leaving nothing here for the domestic programs. BEWARE THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!Could it be that America just is not ready to face having a man of color, any color, as the next president of the United States? Yes, let’s just stick with the status quo and send America to hell in a hand basket. Better to stay in our comfort area.

My take on the way Mccain’s Campaign twists Obama’s word to sooth its purpose is a Campaign that has nothing to offer but wants to be relevant by calling attention to the words of its Opponent.
They must think that Americans are fools. If for no other thing, the last seven years have taught Americans not to take the ranting of a Politician at its face value.

This is a non-story. Any Presidential candidate would feel that they are a symbol of restoring the best in America, and they all say it, whether directly or indirectly.
This “arrogance” theme could so easily be applied to McCain. He is incredibly smug, even when he’s making lying attacks against Obama.

Posted by: Danny | July 30, 2008, 11:07 am 11:07 am

Obama implies that America needs to apologize to the world for abandoning its “best traditions”. (Incidentally, why is the world’s #1 “Change Agent” interested in traditions?) He does this in Berlin, of all places! Germany, France and Russia accepted Saddam’s Oil-For-Food bribes which corrupted their signatures on U.N. Resolution #1441. Saddam felt no fear in violating this 17th effort because he believed our duplicitous “allies” were on HIS side. These Europeans covered Saddam’s back as they stabbed us in ours! The war in Iraq is a product of their betrayal! And Obama feels we should apologize to them?!

Posted by: Ted | July 30, 2008, 11:14 am 11:14 am

First I want to say Jake Tapper has become a source of the latest Obama news. Very interesting stuff and you let folk comment too
Obama is always two steps removed from reality. The symbol of the possibility. His motto is ‘hope for change’. Yet hope is always for change, otherwise you don’t have to hope for it.
The biggest problem is his mentors, friends, and church all hope for specifics. Rev. Wright in writing admires Farrakhan and in speech hopes God will damn America.
I hope Obama does not become a cheap symbol like the American flag lapel pin
All American candidates should hold big rallies overseas. We are Citizens of the World. We can do no less
His German speech mentioned improbable hope. This is also two steps from reality. By walking away from the common expressions Americans use for hope he set up a double meaning of hoping for something improbable, or something it is improbable anyone would ever hope for.
Obama just couldn’t get himself to stick with the common American expressions and created a double entendre
Obama, the man of improbable hope

So, the democratic mutual admiration society, i.e. his highness, Barack Obama and his democratic cronies met behind closed doors … and, then upon leaving the meeting, graced us with glowing reviews of Obama’s humility and his inevitability to win in November. Then, for the umpteenth time, Obama told us how his 6 countries in 9 days photo op, proved how he is now a qualified expert in foreign policy. Then, he refused to acknowledge that the surge worked. Yes … I would call Obama a presumptuous arrogant empty suit, who is being packaged and agressively marketed to the American people. What a grand deception. I urge all Americans … if you really love this country, and you don’t want to see it turn into a third world country … make sure you … and everyone you know, vote for Senator John McCain in November!!!

Yeah that first sentence is so humble…it really puts the insane “symbol” quote in “context.”
In case you didn’t know, I am being sarcastic. :)

He’s not so egotistical to believe he can cure all that is wrong with America with a wave of his hand. Read the rest of the quote.
He was just telling you what everyone in the rest of thew world thinks. Claiming to know the thoughts of the rest of the world is perfectly reasonable…
…at least for the Obamessiah who will heal the world and stop the oceans from rising. For the one who will promote unity and love between all peoples and nations, for the one who … is that too much? I can never tell.
Sorry, I’ll quit reading his speeches, they obviously don’t show how he feels either.

I can’t disagree with the statement that Barry is a symbol. My issue with him is, that’s pretty much ALL he is.

Mccain’s supporters are so so pathetic.
Trying to convince them to wake up to reality and truth is like beating a dead horse. They view everything from a different prism.
I leave them to continue with the spins and lies. It will definitely come back to haunt them.

I guess the question remains why he has become such a symbol to Europeans. What do they see in him that they want to see in America?
Is it what Americans want for America?

Thanks.

Sure.

“Truth hurts.
America has sunk to its lowest because of Bush/Chenney policies fully supported by McCain.
The world thinks Obama can make us the America that the world once loved.
There`s absolutely nothing wrong with this.”
America has achieved great things under President Bush’s guidance. The freeing of millions from tyranny in Iraq and Afghanistan is something all Americans can be proud of and something for which the world should thank you.
To base your sense worth on whether someone else or the rest of the world “loves” you, is very immature. It is of much greater importance to act in a principled manner regardless of what others may think of you.
Looking from across the border, McCain is nothing to crow about but he is far better that Obama who epitomiozes the worse of America..he stokes the fires of class envy and racism while leading a vacuous campaign meant to appeal to the least intelligent amoung you.
The best of wishes to you all from one Canadian that doesn’t “love” Obama and hopes that all of you instead of focusing on the negative and hating your country, wake up to how wonderfully you are blessed.

You have to admit it is grandiose. Seems to me he is developing a real problem with being seen as a celebrity rather than a substantive leader. He is acting like a president and not a candidate. Americans like to vote for their presidents the last time I checked.

To Tom,
It’s great to know we Americans have a fine friend like you in Canada. God bless you and your wonderful country and thank you for taking the time to write kind words about The United States of America. If more people did, maybe we could put to rest this silly myth that everyone in the world hates us.

Obama’s statment was an expression of how he views himself in this political arena to another colleague, after debriefing the Democractic party as that gave him a send off back to the campaign trail of the states, nothing more. This is another example of how his every move is being watched. It a wonder that someone’s not keeping record of how many times he uses the men’s room or blinks his eyes or draws breathe.
Obama is staying on tasks as a one who would be President should be. Obama has no time to mirror McCain’s childish behavior, as he understands that being a presidential candidate is serious business and he is showing by engaging in mature reflection and activities that require his working with others that he appreciates the enormity of the job. We need someone like Obama at the helm right now.

Obama’s success stems from addressing the growing feelings of doubt towards the US’s current course of action, and the “with us or against us” attitude that has been around for so long. It’s not Obama that people are cheering for, it’s a change to a more cooperative and moral society that has the potential to unite and lead the world. Even if he loses this election, those feelings will not dissipate. It’s a cry for revolution Obama is campaigning to, and that is the sole reason behind his success. He’s a figurehead of this movement, nothing more.
Whether that means he should be elected or not is unimportant. What is important is how this revolution will be addressed so that it doesn’t end up more hated and in turmoil than it already is. If Obama isn’t elected, there will be some MAJOR social divisions to address here – both in the US, and around the world.

Whatever ignorance and selfishness blinds you who seek to continue down with McCain the same destructive path that Bush has “led” our great nation toward, I hope you each of you reap ten times the suffering in your lives that many average American families have as a result of their policies and deciet.
The world understands how truly important the POTUS affects their own countries–so they have a sincere and legitimate desire for the best POTUS possible. They see Obama is clearly intellectually, physically, and politically superior to McCain–as all of you do, in your heart of hearts.
Should McCain become elected as a result your insular view– your ignorance will no longer be bliss–but will be our counties continued burden.

Posted by: Sick of the Blind | July 30, 2008, 2:35 pm 2:35 pm

I think Obama hit the nail on the head. Since the beginning people have not been voting for him, but instead have been voting for what they believe he symbolizes. He has been very careful to avoid specifics that may distract from the symbolism of his campaign.
The only problem is, in fixating on Obama-as-symbol voters are ignoring Obama-as-head of state. What a rude awakening we will have if he is elected and we find that the symbol has no ability to govern.

Posted by: David H | July 30, 2008, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

Dorothy, what you and so many Obama supporters fail to understand is that the vast majority of Americans have moved past any lingering racism to the point that we won’t be bullied into electing a black candidate simply to prove that we aren’t racists.
To me, each candidate was just that: a candidate. They weren’t The Black, The Woman, The Elder, The Mormon, The Hispanic. They’re candidates. To vote for Obama on the basis of skin color would be a giant step backward. The truly colorblind have nothing to prove.
The racist label is simply a cheap shot, and frankly, most of us couldn’t care less about it. It says far more about the one who says it than about the intended recipient.

Posted by: marylou | July 30, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

Why keep trying to prop up Obama by bringing Bush into this? Oh, because that’s the best you’ve got LOL!

Posted by: marylou | July 30, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

David: Very true. But that’s where the “yes we can” part of the campaign comes in. Obama, and those voting for him, are hoping to spark a social revolution that gets everyone involved – and gets them all contributing to the cause. They’re backing on the idea that him becoming president would spark grassroots movements and cooperation that was holding back before – but now feels supported enough to happen. And they may be quite right on that.
Whatever Obama’s ability at running the country might be then is made up for. In this case, his lack of a rock-hard stance on most issues in most issues is actually a plus – because it frees him up to do whatever the best option is regardless of previous pledges. And at any rate, he’s highly unlikely to do any worse than Bush – or do much differently than McCain (they’re both really centrists, compared to past elections).
The point: Obama is no messiah, and any supporter of his with any substance knows this. Nobody’s expecting he’ll do everything. But they are expecting his election to be a symbol of social change that will signal them to start contributing towards social unity. That’s what pushes him over the top and makes his supporters so excited: it’s not just him, it’s the entire movement.

Should we even bother having an election?
How about a simple coronation instead?

Posted by: drjohn | July 30, 2008, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

Mary Lou– actually, what’s truly laughable is that McCain is the best that the GOP could come up with!
I don’t think it is any secret, by the way, that Bush’s inept leadership is clearly the reason for Senator Obama’s success. Real Americans that are suffering and care about their families futures, not oil execs and lobbyists who care about how much fatter their pockets can get, are the ones who are supporting Sen. Obama.
WE WILL be taking our country back–one way or another.

Ask Obama what happened to all the American flags his campaign handed out to the GERMANS. Most of them were thrown to the ground and stepped on. What a scam. Obama is a paper doll candidate cut out by the DNC and dressed by the network media. He is two-dimensional and has no depth of experience. I don’t care what crayon you use to color him, black, white, or red. He is still inexperienced and will move this country further into socialism and economic ruin. When will we stop electing politicians who steal our hard earned money through taxes and give it to other people in order to get them re-elected? When?

Posted by: James M | July 30, 2008, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm

we have an unusually large number of citizens who obviously slept through any basic history class in high school or college or some institution of learning. We DO NOT recognize any monarchy as our leader( and have not since circa 1776!) Our founding fathers came up with a pretty good plan called “separation of powers”. The legislative branch can make laws, spend money, etc. The judicial branch tests these against precedents to preserve our Constitution. The executive branch (President) has limited powers by design. It really doesn’t matter who or what you elect as President. It is imperative that EVERYONE WHO ACTUALLY VOTES chooses the senator/representative that is honest, cannot be bribed, sincere, knowledgeable, etc. Until we rid congress of the deceitful, self-serving, self-righteous idealists that have abandoned reality, our country will not succeed or survive!!!

I would consider respecting women and the good works they have done, as an American tradition. Unfortunately I learned that you Sen. Obama, among other government employees and the media feel that it is necessary to tear women down in order for you to win. That is why you don’t serve as a “symbol.. (in the)return of American tradition.” Unless of course you mean the far distant past in which case, no way would you be the nominee and neither you or Sen. Clinton would be a part of this.

“They were excited by the prospect of America getting back to being all it could be.”
Let me translate that into Eurospeak: They were excited by the prospect of America becoming multilateral to the point of paralysis, deferring to its European betters, preferring endless debate and discussion to decisive action, reinstating multiculturalism and moral relativism as guiding principles, traveling further down the road to socialized serfdom, embracing the United Nations and international law as absolute authorities and emasculating the military might that keeps their asses sovereign and free.

He said clearly that he was “just a symbol.” That didn’t sound like ego speaking to me. I’d say he’s predominantly a symbol of a much longed for change from the last eight years. But being a symbol for change, certainly doesn’t guarantee he’ll bring it about significantly.

Posted by: Chris | July 31, 2008, 1:21 pm 1:21 pm

WAKE UP AMERICA!! These quotes you’re complaining about are all out of context. You’re all blinded by partisanship. Obama wasn’t on some ego trip – he was saying the point of his election isn’t because people love him – but that they love what he represents. i.e. a symbol.
Honestly, get your facts straight before you start posting conservative agenda all over these articles, sheeple.

Posted by: Warren | July 31, 2008, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm

let’s suppose for a minute that is true. that is even worse then because it shows that people are completely sold on the idea of him rather than the truth of him. symbols are simplified, basic and attractive representations of something. in and of themselves, they have no substance. no meaning. no depth. they require no understanding as all they do is symbolize. the same with Obama. all he does is symbolize, but there is nothing to back it up. no underlying truth or structure to that which he represents.
if he is a symbol of what america could be again, it is the equivalent of having a fish as a symbol of an airline. the two are completely unrelated.
more accurately, he is a symbol like Coach or Louis Vutton. popular, looks good, impresses people…elitist…but a totally unjustifiable drain on finances, embraced by snobs who either live in a fantasy world or those desperate for some lifestyle they can’t have, and a symbol of completely mixed up priorities masked by the pompous, fraudulent appearance of class.
he’s a symbol alright…a symbol of the aspen crowd.

As an Independent I have no choice but to carefully and ruthlessly check out the candidates. I honestly don’t understand why people desire to be so boxed in by “die-hard Democrat” “die-hard Republican”, I have voted for both based on their standards. I find it truly disturbing that adult americans call each other such vial names because they are of the other party! I was going to vote for Obama until I started listening to him, I’m not ready to be a socialist!
Tom – “Truth Hurts” – well written, thank you.
livingold – your statement stinks of racism! I could care less about skin color, have friends of many backgrounds, and I’m sick of because my skin is lighter I can be accused of that with no truth or substance to the accusation!
As for the media, the headlines for Obama are 90% positive, towards McCain, 80% negative, so tell me where the bias is? I don’t watch the major news channels anymore. I find real news in more intelligent places, maybe that’s why I’m not so apt to call people by the token names given to Democrats and Republicans! I guess I’m the lone black sheep that strays but I’ll tell you I see things more clearly because I don’t allow myself to be so engulfed in one party. I wish everyone else would take a step back and look closely instead of blindly following what their parties mantra is! Maybe then America can get back to what it was meant to be. Let’s face it the Democrats and Republicans are both very very far from what their roots were!

WOOOW! Of all the places to get a 10-1 negative post ratio… an ABC NEWS BLOG! Obama’s people are probably looking at this and are scared to death!
Lord Almighty (and, no, I don’t mean Obama Almighty), please let this catch fire and sweep the nation!
…and no, McCain’s no better. Where Obama’s a not-so-heavily-disguised socialist with Marxist tendencies, McCain’s an incremental socialist with circa 1930′s Democrat tendencies.
Either way we’re going to hell. It’s just the question of which is better, the tortoise and the hare?
…and to the guy who said “It really doesn’t matter who or what you elect as President,” and suggested we take a history class, I suggest YOU take a GOVERNMENT class.
The President nominates the members of that third branch of government, and unless you have been sleeping the past several years, that third “equal” branch has become a little MORE equal than the others. AAccording to Article III Section 2, their job is to look at challenged laws and rule on whether said law squares with the OUR constitution. Lately, they’ve been citing OTHER nations’ laws, where they think American opinion is HEADED (not where it is right now, mind you), and can read the Second Amendment and FOUR of the NINE can’t see that the people have a right to bear arms.
Of course, the next question is “bear arms against who? In short, against our own out of control government. Read the entire Third, Fourth, Sixth, and also last phrase of the Fifth Amendment if you don’t believe it.
Go ahead, fool yourself into thinking the Presidency is unimportant because everything else will take care of itself. Not too long afterward, this nation will be run by a very select few (nine, to be exact). Look around the world and tell me you think that’s a good thing… It’s sure working out well in Iran!

Posted by: Marty | August 1, 2008, 12:47 am 12:47 am

The President (whomever or whatever) DOES NOMINATE judges, but if you really knew government AND history , you might recall that CONGRESS MUST VOTE TO APPROVE THE NOMINATIONS!! Just ask people with names like (Bork, a female named Lani etc.) I did not intend for anyone to believe I felt the office of President is not important, I merely was trying to get VOTERS to open their eyes, look carefully at Congress and choose not “whom they wish to serve” but instead find the candidates that can and will make decisions that preserve our “individual pursuit(s) of happiness”. DO NOT select “activist” congressional leaders but select “grassroots active” members of congress and we will return to the “government of the people, by the people, and for the people”
