Barack’s Salad Days
Earlier today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., launched a new attack against Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, on his curious non-answer on how many homes he and his wife have. Tonight, in Chesapeake, Va., Obama recalled his more modest circumstances a few years ago.
"I have been truly blessed over the last few years – it hasn’t been a long time," Obama said. " I mean, before I wrote this book, or before this book started selling about four years ago, you know we were living in a condo. Myself, Michelle and our two girls.
"And we, you know, had two cars, but one of them was kind of beat up and we didn’t have a garage so you’d have to, in Chicago you gotta shovel your car out of the snow and scrape the ice," Obama continued. "And we didn’t know how we were going to afford college education for our kids ‘cause we had been paying down student loans for ten years between the two of us….
"Now we’re blessed," Obama said. "So the idea that I have to pay the same tax rate as the waitress over at Shoney’s who’s making maybe $16, 18, 20,000 a year – when the truth is that the extra 2% or 3% that I’m paying by rolling the Bush tax cuts – I won’t really notice, but for her, would allow to her get an extra $1,000 or $1500 or $2000 that would allow her to maybe buy a new coat for her kids or to get a new computer that they could work on."

Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
Time for Obama to hit one out of the park by linking this to some type of bold new policy on housing.
I recommend advocating a moratorium on forclosures or some other immediate relief. This would put an end to McCains campaign once and for all.

Maybe Shoney’s waitress can put solar panels on her rented one bedroom apartment she shares with her 2 kids.
Meanwhile, Obama has 4 fireplaces for those cozy Chicago winter nights.

The Chicago Tribune reported that in 2002, the Obama’s had an income of $259,394 which ranked them in the top 2% of US households. That year the Obama’s only donated $1,050 to charity, or 0.4% of their income. The average US household in that year gave $1,872 in gifts to charity, according to the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The national average for charitable giving is 2.2% of household income. Obama’s tax returns from 1997 until he arrived in Washington in 2005 fell well below that benchmark.

“We did a lot better after I was elected to the Senate and could earmark $1,000,000 to the hospital where Michelle worked. They tripled her $100,000+ salary to $300,000+. We then could afford to team up with Rezko and buy our modest million dollar home.”

His salad days now onsiste of twice washed, organic mesculem I presume.
To go down this road is inpoor taste for him imo.
On the campagn trail earlier this year Michelle stated
20 years after graduating from Harvard Law School, she’s still complaining about her tuition payments, even while living in a $1.65 million house and with a household income that puts her firmly in the top 1 percent of U.S. families.
“The couple’s combined salaries were more than $430,000 in 2006, according to their tax return,” reported Los Angeles Times writer Robin Abcarian in February. “In addition, Barack Obama earned $551,000 in book royalties.”
In 2007, the year prior to Mrs. Obama’s perpetual bellyaching on the campaign trail about her tuition bill, Barack Obama was paid $4 million in book royalties, as reported on his financial disclosure report in June.
Michelle andObama are more than likely thrilled that the Rev. Wright, now set to retire in a church-bought $1.6 million mansion complete with a rubberized exercise room, butler’s pantry, four-car garage, elevator and whirlpool. Building plans also show, reports the Chicago Sun-Times, a large spare room for “a future theater or swimming pool.”
This is so silly. Why Barack chose to bring this up will end up dragging a whole ot of baloney about his wife whining that she and her presumptive nominee struggled to pay danicing and piano lessons for their kids.
Thi ssubject should be closed and let’s gt onto the issues.
What are you going to do for me?

Debra – It’s so interesting how Obama, in this article, says that 4 years ago they didn’t know how they were going to pay for their girls educations. He couldn’t figure that out on $259,000/year? Hmmm – if that’s the case, I definitely don’t want him telling me what to do with my money.

Uh, as someone who earned about as much as that waitress for a long time…you don’t pay any taxes at that level and get EIC, especially if you have kids. The notion that Obama paid the same rate as a low income person is absurd beyond imagining. He is hitting up this man of the people thing a bit too much. Talk about “out of touch”
Posted by: Wade | August 22, 2008, 2:15 am 2:15 am
It’s a good story.
In 2000, the Obamas reported an Adjusted Gross income of $240,505. If he feels he was struggling then, I suggest he reconsider his current tax plan. I’m certain he did not feel rich at that income level in Downtown Chicago, and I urge him to consider others in the same position.
Last year, he made $4 million and his adjusted gross income was $983,826. An additional 3% on that would be $29,514.78. Perhaps he wouldn’t notice that, but he is not asking for tax increases at people making only $4 million and above.
He paid a 28% tax rate, where his Shoneys waitress would be in the 15% tax bracket or lower, depending upon her deductions.
Finally, there is nothing about him paying a higher tax rate that gives the waitress an extra $3,000 in her pocket. The Bush tax cuts did not raise her rates, and rolling them back would not lower it.

More empty rhetoric from Obama who once again proves he has no idea what he’s talking about.
The waitress pays 15% income tax.
The Obamas pay 35% income tax.
“So the idea that I have to pay the same tax rate as the waitress over at Shoney’s…”
Once again, just words. But in fairness, the Harvard lawyer didn’t actually say she paid the same tax rate; he said that was just an “idea” that she had to. An Obama presidency would be so interesting, wouldn’t it?

Obama has the same tax rate as a waitress???
From the IRS:
Waitress + 2 children/ $16,000 income
Head of household tax rate:
Income of $11,200 to $42,650
Tax rate: $1,120.00 plus 15% of the amount over 11,200
MINUS standard deductions = $0 income tax paid.
Obama
Income of $349,700 and above:
Tax rate:
$94,601.00 plus 35% of the amount over 349,700

The waitress at shoneys is not going to get a Felon to assist in her buy a home she can not afford.
The waitress at shoneys is not going to use affirmative action for college then complain about student loans.
The waitress at shoneys is not going to lie about her family and other things on TV, get caught in them and expect people to trust her, knowing she continues to lie.
Mr Obama is out of touch with himself. So there is not way he can be in touch with other people.
Mr obama has not done anything for the waitress at shoneys in the entire time he has been in a Government office. He voted Present on that day!

Yeah it was really hard on Barry back in 2000 when he pulled down 240k in income! I’m sure he was so close to not being able to take his family out to fine dining every night so that he only gave 1% to charity! It must have been so rough for the guy who complains the US doesn’t give enough charity to the world over (despite the fact were #1 far and away) to sacrifice and near 2.5% (average) charitable donations since the 2000 tax year.
Its just so damn hard when your average income over the last 8 years is just shy of 1 mil per year.

Angie, Cindy McCain can afford 7 houses because of her families HARD WORK (something Obama would be hard pressed to define)! Because don’t you know the the amount of federal income tax that the top wage earners make up has gone UP under Bush, meaning the government has taken more revenue from them than before!
Posted by: Zaggs | August 22, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am
2% of the people pay 95% of the tax dollars collected already. Sounds pretty close Socialism to me.
How did we get by as a Nation for over 100 years with no income tax and no Social Security tax?
The more money the government has the more ways they find to spend it and give it away. It isn’t Congresses money, it is OUR money.
My husband and I make around $75,000 (combined) a year and learn to save money and not spend more than we earn. We put 2 kids through college and they have no student loans.

Angie – Continuing to prove you wrong. It’s so easy it’s irresistable.
In 1988, inspired by a vacation visit four years earlier to substandard medical facilities on Truk Lagoon,[15][11] Cindy McCain founded the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT).[2] It was a non-profit organization that organized trips for doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to provide MASH-like emergency medical care to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas such as Micronesia, Vietnam (before relations were normalized between them and the U.S.[15]), Kuwait (arriving five days after the conclusion of the Gulf War[15]), Iraq, Nicaragua, India, Bangladesh and El Salvador.[10][29][30][31][32] She led 55 of these missions over the next seven years,[14] with each being of at least two weeks’ duration.[32] AVMT also supplied treatment to poor sick children around the world.[33] In 1993, Cindy McCain and the AVMT were honored with an award from Food for the Hungry.[10]

Feeling foolish for your posts that Cindy McCain has never worked a day in her life?
That year, McCain founded a new organization, the Hensley Family Foundation, which donates monies towards children’s programs in Arizona and nationally,[10] and she was largely a stay-at-home mom during the balance of the 1990s.[18] She also held positions as vice president, director, and vice chair of Hensley & Co.[26][25
Posted by: Peach | August 22, 2008, 9:54 am 9:54 am
Angie – So much for your allegation that Cindy McCain hasn’t worked a day in her life:
2000, she became chair of the now $300-million-a-year Hensley & Co.[39] following her father’s death.[36] She, together with her children and one of John McCain’s children from his first marriage, own 68 percent of the company.[40] As chair, her role took the form of frequent consultations with the company CEO on major initiatives such as new products, new plants, or employee welfare, rather than of an active physical presence.[41][42] By 2007, she had an annual income of over $400,000 from Hensley & Co. and an estimated net worth of $100 million.[22] She also owned at least $1 million worth of shares of Anheuser-Busch stock.[43] With her children, she owns a minority stake in the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team.[

Gosh, for someone who has never worked a day in her life, that Cindy McCain sure has achieved a lot.
She became actively involved with Operation Smile in 2001,[44] taking parts in trips with it to Morocco, Vietnam, and India.[44] She was honored by the organization in 2005,[44] and sits on its board of directors.[29] She joined the board of directors of CARE in 2005.[29] She is on the board of the HALO Trust,[29] and has visited operations to remove landmines in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Angola.[14] She makes financial contributions to these organizations via her family trust,[15] and views her role on them as watching them in the field and to ensure they are frugal and their money is being spent effectively.[42] On occasion she has criticized foreign regimes on human rights grounds, such as Myanmar’s military junta.[45]

Angie, first off perhaps you should try a reading comprehension course. I said Cindy’s FAMILY did the hard work. But Cindy herself has traveled the world over (at one point she was on 50+ missions in over about 7 years)to help children and more specifically she has directly “lift the child in Bangladesh from poverty” (you’ll probably need to look up that quote to get the joke), actually technically she’s done it twice. Obama seems hard press to visit the woman who raised him more then once a year. Then there is the fact her first job was in the field of special education working with children who had down syndrome. Is that what you consider an easy job Angie? Just seeing where you draw the line, or is hard work writing letters so a slum lord can get more victims?
Cindy herself has suffered through addiction and a stroke, yet keeps up her charitable work which might not be physically demanding but I cannot imagine its mentally relaxing either.

“As an advocate for children’s health care needs, Cindy founded and ran the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT) from 1988 to 1995. AVMT provided emergency medical and surgical care to impoverished children throughout the world. Cindy led 55 medical missions to third world and war-torn countries during AVMT’s seven years of existence. On one of those missions to Mother Teresa’s orphanage, Cindy was convinced to take two babies in need of medical attention to the United States. One of those babies is now their adopted daughter, 16-year-old Bridget McCain.
In recent years, three organizations in particular have been the subject of her international focus: HALO, Operation Smile, and CARE.
As a member of the Board of Trustees for the HALO Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to landmine removal and weapons destruction in war-torn countries, Cindy has traveled to numerous countries to see firsthand the impact HALO has had by removing landmines. She recently returned from her second visit to Cambodia. She has also traveled to Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Angola.
Cindy also serves on the Board of Directors for Operation Smile, a non-profit organization whose mission is to repair cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities for children around the world. Since 1982, Operation Smile has provided free reconstructive surgery to more than 100,000 children and young adults in 25 countries. Cindy has assisted on volunteer missions to Morocco, India, and Vietnam. She is scheduled to return to Vietnam on another mission during the summer of 2008.”

Truth is Cindy McCain, owns a beer distribution company that has engaged in lobbying. As senator McCain has recused himself from alcohol issues, but as president he wouldn’t be able to.
The company has opposed such groups as Mothers Against Drunk Driving in fighting proposed federal rules requiring alcohol content information on every package of beer, wine and liquor.
Its executives, including John McCain’s son Andrew, have written at least 10 letters in recent years to the Treasury Department, have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to a beer industry political action committee, and hold a seat on the board of the politically powerful National Beer Wholesalers Assn.
Hensley has run afoul of health advocacy groups that have tried to rein in appeals to young drinkers. For example, the company distributes caffeinated alcoholic drinks that public health groups say put young and underage consumers at risk by disguising the effects of intoxication.

That’s a touching story there Barack. Now why don’t you put your words into action and help support your half brother who lives in poverty. It will only take $20/month to improve his life greatly. Maybe cut down on your arugala to balance it off.

Someone not running for president is a partial owner of a legal beer distribution company. BO used and distributed cocaine on the streets.
You be the judge.

Obama scares those who want to maintain the status quo because for them, times aren’t that hard. They’ve gotten “drunk” under the Bush administration. For them, Obama’s tax plan is pretty sobering.
McCain’s tax cut for the rich (above 2.87 million): -4.4%.
Obama’s tax increase for the rich (above 2.87 million): +11.5%
Obama’s tax cut for the poor (up to 18,981): -5.5%.
McCain’s tax cut for the poor (up to 18,981: -0.2%
Most of Obama’s tax cuts go to those making under $66k, or 60% of taxpayers.
More money in the pockets of middle and lower income earners will be spent here in the U.S. More money in the pockets of the wealthy will go wherever they want it to go.

What about Obama’s brother George who lives in a grass hut and survives off of $1 dollar a month? Think the blessed Messiah could give his own brother a measly hundred bucks now and then?

It is interesting that being “blessed” means, to Sen. Obama, having more money!

Exactly why do you want to take more money away from those that have succeeded, cincy? You don’t think they’re taxed enough now or what? You don’t agree with the founding fathers?
Are you an advocate for socialism? What makes you believe that wealthy people’s money belongs to someone else?

Inquisitor.
We already have corporate socialism.
To the poor we say: “Get a job!” To Wall Street we say: “How much do you need?”

Llama, What I said was the share of federal income tax the top earners pay has gone up. in 2006 the top 1% of wage earners paid 39.9 of all fed income taxes. In 2004 they paid 36.9%. That would be an increase of 3% Sorry if the facts got in the way of your argument.

Is the topic of individual tax rates too deep? One more chance, do you or do you not advocate higher taxes for the upper income bracket? If so, why, how much higher, and how does that meld with our founding father’s intentions?

Zaggs, if your problem is that the share of federal income tax the top earners have to pay is too high, there is an extremely easy solution to that problem.
They should pay their employees more and take a lower pay for themselves.
That way, their share of the federal income tax goes down and the share of lower income earners goes up. Problem solved.
The problem is the incredible increase of the income gap in the last decade, especially under Bush. That gap has reached levels only seen just before the Depression.
