Black Leaders, Celebrities in Denver for Obama Camp ‘Unity’ Breakfast on MLK Anniversary

ABC News’ Jennifer Parker reports: Civil rights leaders including Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, and the Rev. Al Sharpton, as well as African American celebrities like Oprah Winfrey’s best friend Gayle King, Cicely Tyson, Lou Gossett Jr., and actors Alfrie Woodard and Blair Underwood, gathered for breakfast in Denver today on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famed ‘I Have a Dream Speech.’ The event, a "unity" breakfast organized by Barack Obama’s campaign, occurred just hours before Obama delivers his own historic acceptance speech as the nation’s first African American major party presidential candidate.

"I hope I can remain upright in my chair," Gayle King told ABC News of Obama’s speech at Invesco Field, which is expected to be delivered tonight before an estimated 76,000 people.

When people say ‘I have a dream’ today, I say my dream is coming true," she said. "I knew this day would come and I still know it."

Of her friend Oprah Winfrey, who is in town for Obama’s speech, King said, "She wouldn’t miss it."

For many black leaders the day is charged with emotion.

"Having been at the march in 1963 several feet from the platform and looking directly in the face of Dr. King when he made that historic address, today could not be more appropriate or more fitting," civil rights leader the Rev. Otis Moss Jr. told ABC News.

"Sen. Obama represents the very thing that Dr. King articulated, not only in that speech, but in his entire life and work," Moss said.

"I’m numb, I’m absolutely numb," Tyson told ABCNews.com.

"I never, ever dreamed that, in my lifetime, I would be witnessing this," Tyson added.

"I really don’t know what he’d say," said Georgia Rep. John Lewis, when asked what civil rights icon King would say were he alive today. "But I think he’d say ‘hallelujah.’"

Lewis is the last living person who spoke at the MLK march.

Firing up a crowd of about 500 black Democratic delegates, celebrities and faith leaders, the Rev. Joseph Lowery, president of the Coalition for the People’s Agenda, said Obama doesn’t have to be a civil rights leader between now and November.

"He can go ahead and be president and leave the agitating to us," he said to cheers and whoops of "That’s right!"

"The most important thing he can do for the nation is get elected," Lowery said.

Bernice King also brought the crowd to its feet, arguing that, despite Obama’s historic accomplishment, her father’s work is far from done.

"He declared that he may not get there with us," she said, "and we are on our way to the promised land, but we are not there yet and our next step is unity."

"Let us be satisfied when our young men are going to college not going to jail," she said to loud cheers and applause. "The movement is not there, let’s continue the movement!"

Not to be outdone, Sharpton brought the crowd again to their feet with a verbal slap against President George W. Bush.

"The media keeps talking about passing the baton," he said of news coverage about former President Bill Clinton’s solid endorsement last night of Obama. "The only baton that we’re going to pass is from George Bush to Barack Obama."

Sharpton said civil rights leaders will go in November to "states that seem to have difficulty counting votes."

"We’re going to make sure that the names of African American voters don’t mysteriously disappear," he said, "Not this time! We will not be divided. Not this time!"

Other speakers echoed that Obama’s candidacy alone isn’t enough.

Charles Steele of the Georgia Southern Christian Leadership Conference said Obama is about to make history, but the fight isn’t over.

"We might quit at this point, but we can’t quit, we can’t let Martin Luther King, and other civil rights leaders in the movement, down," Steele said. "I challenge you to think about this moment not as a fulfillment of the dream, but an important step along the way."

Steele said African Americans still have to fight on a daily basis against higher rates of poverty and racism.

Others expressed pride in Obama for being the first black to run for president on a major party ticket.

"I just wish my dad was here to see this," said actress Holly Robinson Peete, whose late father, TV producer Matt Robinson, marched on Washington.

"He would be so proud of Obama," she said.

"To have it occur on the 45th anniversary of the march on Washington — that it was destined to be. It could have never been anyone else," Tyson said.

"My old friend Jane Pittman used to say that when a child is born, folks look into its face and ask, ‘Are you the one? Are you the one?’ Well, he is definitely the one," she said.

Dr. King would be ashamed of how African Americans have behaved this election season, selecting the color of the skin over the content of the character, and before you fools label me racist. I am a proud African American mother of two boys and I am ashamed to have them see the race card being used and people putting History before Logic,I do not want to instill in them to use their skin color to intimidate others or as a crutch, I want them to learn that they are deserving of the same opportunities that everyone else is, based on hard work and dedication.

How fitting it is for the phony Zerobameus, God of Nothingness, in the Temple of Doom on top of Mile High.

And the March goes on, the March goes on, towards a more perfect Union and to the re-enlivenment of the American Dream for ALL Americans.

The message was “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Obama and his Supporters have made this election all about the color of Obama’s skin, not the contents of his character.
He and they have made a mockery of MLK’s speech.
RIP Martin.

Martin L. King loved his country and he would NO WAY, NO HOW, put an amateur, inexperienced man in the White House, black, white, or whatever.

Jealous you Republican losers??
The Democratic Party’s convention is a HUGE SUCCESS and will be topped off tonight by a great speech from a great and true American leader!!!!
The Republican convention by contrast will be a BIG disappointment and boring FAILURE!!!!
The highlights will include speeches by the biggest failure that has ever occupied the White House, George Bush and his evil side kick (the true brains) Cheney!
We are all wondering whether McBush can even fill the convention hall! Because there is no way he could ever fill a 75,000 seat stadium!!!!
He can barely fill his phony town halls with a couple hundred hand picked losers!
Ha ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!
What a JOKE THE REPUBLICANS ARE!!!!!

This whole thing with Obama is such a farce.
I’ve been reading about what the Obama thugs are doing and it’s downright scary. Trying to shut down a radio station in Chicago which dared to interview a critic of Obama, having people arrested at the DNC for daring to take video of big lobbyists smoozing with dems, trying to sic the justice dept. on some group that dared to air Obama ads about his friendship with Ayers.
Geeeze, is this a sign of things to come in an Obama police state?
This guy must stopped NOW.

Mike,
Martin Luther King would have been very proud today – very proud!!!
It is his dream come true!!!!
Lucky that your sentiments are only shared by a small minority of right wing losers!!!!
We are going to take this country back from the incompetent evil doing REPUBLICANS in November!!!! And I am sure that puts a smile on Dr. Kings face as he looks down from Heaven….

Davis,
The Repugs cannot seem to give away the 10,000 tickets available for Gramps speech. Plenty of seats still available. 75,000 tickets were snapped up in a matter of hours for Obama.
Jealous much, little pugs??

Okay “decent American”. BTW what does that mean? Does decent mean that you want the same old things to continue? Does “decent” mean the status quo? Does “decent” mean that Barack Obama/Joe Biden are “indecent”? Was the treatment of blacks AND whites during Hurricane Katrina “decent”?. Was going into this war and losing trillions of dollars “decent”? Is our abysmal healthcare for people “decent”? How about jobs going overseas???? Help me to understand your definition of “decent “because I am missing it. Obama’s ascent is indeed about his character. See people like you have not paid attention to the things he has done for people in his state while serving as a public servant and in the senate whose constituents BTW are black AND white. If this is so racist “decent American”, how is it that people of all races are supporting him? Since we are trying not be racists are you willing to admit we made a mistake in electing George Bush? Oh, while we’re at it let me talk about qualification….Was John F. Kennedy qualified??? Was Bill Clinton qualified???? Was Ronald Reagan qualified???? For that matter was President Abraham Lincoln qualified???. They were elected because people believed in the same thing as now – change, and a change for the better!

McCain/Mittens/VietCong ’08,
I will believe it when I see it! 10,000 people willing to listen to McSenile speak? What a joke!!
Maybe they will have another LIME GREEN background for him to give his acceptance speech in front of! Then he can give us that big “ear to ear yellow toothed crypt smile of his” Then he can give his famous line again “that’s not change we can believe in, hehehehehe..”
Just watch though, ABC and the rest of the talking heads will be calling it fabulous, wonderful, inspiring!!!!
What a BAD JOKE McCAIN AND THE REPUBLICANS ARE!!!!
Here is laughing at you (in advance) at your convention FAILURE next week!!!

Gosh, Jo, if you hadn’t put Obama’s name in your post I would have thought you were talking about George Bush and his administration. You don’t seem to have a problem with this Republican administration eroding our Constitution with “signing statement” and strong arm tactics regarding our personal freedoms and rights, but you are nearly hysterical at the thought of Obama and his “police state”. If Obama is elected, will you have any problems with him signing hundreds of signing statement, the WH loosing thousands and thousands of emails, members of his administration refusing to testify or turn over evidence to Congress based on Executive Privilege, having his own attorneys determine what is legal and what isn’t, having a Vice-President having secrect meeting (or I forgot, the VP is not a member of the Executive Branch of the government)? Remember who set the standard for this type of behavior – your beloved George W. Bush. I do not want to hear whining if Obama is elected and does exactly what Bush has done with the examples above. I just hope Obama doesn’t vacation as much as Bush has.

All Liberals do is cry about everything. Listen to the DNC its all about woo is me, poor, poor me. The government needs to give us a hand out. We can’t do this ourselves. The United States is going to crumble. We need this, we need that, and the government has the responsibility to give it to us. We don’t want to work for it, just give it to us. It gets really old. Just once I would like to see the liberals take a look in the mirror, say it’s up to me to become a success, accept responsibility for their own future, go out and do something for themselves without being the victim and asking the government for help.

I’m a very proud American today. I’m proud not only for the fact that a person of color has a chance to live out a dream a lot of us had as kids, but also because it shows that a lot of my white brothers & sisters were able to put aside things that they’d heard about blacks growing up & did what was right. I see all of these posts talking about Obams isn’t qualified. What makes McCain so qualified? A good soldier doesn’t necessarily translate into a good president. This idea that we as blacks should keep our exuberance about this historical event under wraps is ludicrous. This event represents progress, why shouldn’t I be excited? And to all of you who keep quoting the last 2 minutes of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech where he talks judging people by their character rather than their color, have you listened to the entire speech? It’s a 15 minute speech & Dr. King is definitely not all sugar & spice in the early portion of that speech. I dare say that if he would’ve made that speech today, he would’ve gotten the Jeremiah Wright treatment. Sure he exuded optimism at the end of that speech, but he told it like it was for the majority of it. I refuse to supress my joy & excitement for this historical event simply so some people won’t feel uncomfortable.

Capitalism
When our government stops bailing our banks and corporations I will agree with you. When our government stops providing corporate welfare to big oil, I will agree with you. When these huge companies move their headquarters out of the US to avoid paying taxes and can no longer sell there goods in our country, I will agree with you. When big business stops shipping jobs overseas for cheap labor and pays its fair share of taxes I will agree with you. I think every able body should work to earn their own living and dislike having my tax-payer dollars go to someone who is too lazy to work, but there are millions of American citizens who, through no fault of their own, have lost jobs, become sick with no health insurance, are stuggling with the rising costs of energy and goods, and if we can send 10-12 BILION dollars to Iraq each MONTH when that country has an 80 BILLION surplus, then a few hand outs here don’t bother me that much.

These dumm axx people needs to really read what MLK said in his speech he never said anything about blacks become President. As far as I’m concern his dream was already accomplished way long ago when blacks and white walked hand in hand, side by side, work together, go to school together and not judge each other by the color of their skin but by the character of their content. Oh and I’m too young to know Dr. MLK but I can beleive that he is not as selfish as these good for nothan civil rights leaders. No I don’t think he would say such a thing like “Hallelujah”. First of all I’m not a white person but my question is why blacks especially these civil right activists are judging white folks by the color of their skins?

How many of you graduated magna cum laude from a place like Harvard Law?!! TELL ME ABOUT GRANDPA McCAIN; HE MUST BE A RHODE’S SCHOLAR SINCE OBAMA IS SO INEPT! I love how you are such strong proponents of Dr. King now!! If Dr. King was still alive you would probably call him names too!! Oh, and to you McCain fans; what’s his civi rights record?? Oh yeah, how many times did he vote against the King holiday??!! Look at you now, acting as if you even care. I thought today, all people could at least celebrate the step that our great country has taken; regardless of OBAMA being your candidate or not – well I Dr. King message resonates for you!!!

Obama is not MLK’s Dream!
Forty-five years ago, on August 28, 1963, The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was a Republican and embraced the traditional values that made this country great delivered his inspirational civil rights “I Have a Dream” speech.
Today, Senator Barack Obama, with the most liberal voting record in the US Senate, is delivering his political acceptance speech, in an apparent attempt to assume for himself the mantle of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Dr. King did not embrace the type of secularist agenda promoted by Obama and the Democratic Party of today, which includes fostering dependency on welfare that breaks up families, supporting same-sex marriage and partial-birth abortion, and banning God from the public square.
Click here to read “A Covenant With Life: Reclaiming MLK’s Legacy”, in which MLK’s niece, Dr. Alveda C. King, affirms that her uncle Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican.: http://www.trustedpartner.com/docs/library/000143/Alveda%20King%20article.pdf

Kim: Thank you for your comments. I feel the same and I hate that Obama pick MLK’s “I have a dream” for his day. But, we know Obama, also trying to over shadow and take an important day from MLK.

If this is the way black leader are going to be dropping subtle hints of their new found black power because Obama is the nominee for President this is not going to do any good for race relations in this country.
This attitude is going to turn a lot of voters off, they are going to spoil the moment with this type of “its our time now” attitude, geez I would of thought that some of them would know better.

AGBI, respecting your opinion however graduating a high profile college does not really speak volume sir. I know a lot of situation where a college graduate does not get the job vs. 10 years experience in the same job both men applied for. Prime example I am a manager for a company when I look at resumes I look for experience more than college degree. Once I get that person to step into my company then I will put him into my company training courses which will earn him a certificate and he could become a more productive and money savings for me. If later he would applied for another job he can use that certificate from my company for reference plus his experience, and that will top any college degree. Well I guess I’m only talking about the business side of the story right? Well is that the most important issues on this election anyways?

Kim,
What did us African Americans do during this election season that you are so ashamed of? What did we do that the white Americans didn’t do? If you want to act as if there’s not a history in this country as it pertains to race, that’s your business. If you want to believe that decisions & choices by people in high places in this country aren’t based on race, then you go right ahead. I have 2 sons also & I teach them to believe in God, to stand on their own 2 feet & to not be afraid to work hard. The race issue is alive & well in our country & I’d be doing my sons a terrible disservice if I sent them out into this society thinking everyone is going to treat them fairly regardless of the color of their skin. That’s a lie straight from the pits of hell & you know it. I tell my sons to respect everyone & command respect from everyone. Obviously you subscribe to this mentality that if no one mentions race, then the race problems in this country will go away. That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Nothing ever gets solved by not discussing it. So Kim, you go ahead & raise your sons the way you want, that’s your right. But it’s a terrible thing when a black person has to find out the hard way that there’s still indeed a race line in this country. Ask O.J. Simpson about it. He thought he had been accepted by white America, but white America let him know real quick that he was indeed a black man when a white woman died. I will not send my sons out into society naive like that. The truth is the truth & sometimes the truth hurts. There is so much evidence out there that racism is alive, but if you choose to ignore it, that’s your deal. Recognizing racism doesn’t mean you’re using it as an excuse or a crutch. And please explain to me how one can use color to intimidate anyone? I didn’t know I had that power.

Posted by: Dee Tee Gee | August 28, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm

Look at the polls on this website. You will see the vast majority of Blacks and Hispanics are going to vote for Obama. While that is no surprise at all, doesn’t it give anyone else pause? How frightening; voting for this inexperienced, empty-headed person based on the fact that he is a minority and minorities want one of their own in the White House at all costs? If you think this country is bad now, wait until you see the disaster it will be if this clown take the White House. Unfortunately, we will ALL suffer if that happens.

Posted by: Lisa Again | August 28, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm

Davis: No, not jealous, frightened. Frightened of voters like you – brainwashed, childish and uninformed sheep. We are frightened of your candidate and with very good reason: He is a big zero, and will – trust me, let you down badly at least, and at worst, work to destroy this country further. I am sorry you do not grasp what is going on right under your nose. Don’t say you weren’t warned when your eyes finally open and see the true picture of Barack Obama.

Posted by: Lisa Again | August 28, 2008, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

Mary,
So anytime a black person accomplishes anything it’s because of affirmative action? I guess Condoleeza Rice is a product of affirmative action? I guess Colin Powell is a product of affirmative action? Oprah Winfrey? Tony Dungy? All successful blacks in their respective fields & all beneficiaries of affirmative action, huh? There’s no way that these people possibly could have worked hard to get where they are & were more qualified than the other candidates to perform their duties. An honor student from the most prestigious university in the United States, an Ivy League school, the former editor of the Harvard Law Review is a product of affirmative action? Hilarious, absolutely hilarious. Let me guess, you missed out on a job or was passed over for a promotion because of affirmative action, right? If Obama were Hispanic, you’d probably blame it on illegal immigration. Puhleeze.

Posted by: Dee Tee Gee | August 28, 2008, 4:56 pm 4:56 pm

Lisa again,
If Obama had 100% of the black vote it wouldn’t be enough to win. Obviously for him to be at the cusp of the presidency, some white people are voting for him too. If being black was the only prerequisite for blacks & hispanics to vote for a candidate, why didn’t Jesse Jackson get as far as Obama when he was on the ballot? Why didn’t Al Sharpton get this far when he was on the ballot? It doesn’t take much intelligence to stereotype people does it? If Obama’s head is empty, then McCain’s head must be outer space. Talk about being fooled. Has McCain tackled an issue yet? Come on, now.

Are we ready for Lord Obama’s Ascention speech? The Obama ‘hysteria’ is really turning sci-fi. He is NOT a Martin Luther King, NOR a JFK, he’s just a senator who happens to be riding on the song of ‘A black man, President’, than the deeds of a strong leader. I still think his ‘ascention’ is a little premature, but we’ll see, won’t we??

Davis: In case you are not up todate with the news, the first night of the convention was poorly organized and that was stated by the media. I thought it was a joke myself. The second night was great because of Hillary’s speech and the third because of Bill Clinton’s speech. Those were the best speeches of the convention. Obama is making his JFK speech tonight no doubt throwing in some of MLK’s because words because he doesn’t know how to form his own.

Unfortunately, if you are white, you simply don’t (and never will) understand what it means to be non-white in a “White Man’s World”. That’s a fact. Many people consider “White” to be evil. We know the history of this country. Obama speaks about helping “ALL” people and races to come together, and I do put emphasis on the word “ALL”. Obama/Biden 08!!

Lynn: Don’t be too sure of yourself. Obama hasn’t completely made history until he is elected president and that may not happen. I understand that 85 of Hillary’s fundraisers just switched to McCain. How many thousands of her voters will do the same? And can he win the battleground states that she won and he couldn’t. Will NY, NJ, PA, OH, NV. AZ, CA vote for Obama. No one knows for sure. I doubt he will win WVA and SD. They could be racial states.

And the Great One, The Messiah, rose out of the ashes and stated to his hypnotized flock:
I shall be thy leader and under my reign thou shalt have partial birth abortions, thou shalt have thy teenage daughter have abortions without thy consent, thou shalt turn thy hard earned wages over to me so that I’ll distribute thy wealth to those who chose not to work, thou shalt have illegal aliens as thy neighbor and he shall also receive social security and welfare benefits, thou shalt lay down and destroy thy weapons against thy enemy, for I will appease thy enemies and we shalt wear burkas and read only thy Quran.
Follow me, oh small ones, to the greek temple in Colorado where I shall CHANGE our country and HOPE we survive with our morals, values and our country intact.

Lynn: I disagree with you. Obama was a racist in his younger days and hated white people. You haven’t read his BIO like I have from the NYT that’s why he belonged to pastor’s Wright’s church for 20 years and anti-american. MLK was never anti-american, white hating or a racist. He was for all the people no matter what race. Jessie Jackson was right in his comment’s about Obama. Don’t tell blacks how to run their house, talk about the issues facing this country and what changes need to be made.

Will white leaders be getting together too? Or would that be racist?

I heard months ago Obama would never, ever be nominated. Obama will be okay, because I want change I can believe in and many others do too!! And you never know how people will vote when they get in that voting booth. I’m a believer!! Even if he doesn’t get elected President, this has opened doors for the downtrodden; they believe in themselves, and yes, they know it can be done!! Obama/Biden 08

Obama has made history by being nominated. MLK is smiling down on this event, I’m sure. Even a plethora of Repub haters can’t spoil this day!

Does that mean that we may even have a Jewish President in the future?

Davis: I don’t think we are taking anything back because we haven’t lost anything. Foreclosures are because many people purchased their homes or condo’t with 5% down instead of 25% to 30% down like they should have. If you don’t have the money do without. And if the gas prices are too high, if your near transportation take a bus or the “L”. Sometimes people are their own worst enemy. The economy is bad because the merchandisers are raising their prices and don’t forget the floods which ruined many crops making the prices higher he won’t make the economy any better than what it is now. In fact, he might cause this country to go into a disaster.

Mack, you really don’t understand, and you never will. This is not simply about race. If you haven’t lived it, you don’t understand. Can’t explain it to you. Even if I explained it, you wouldn’t understand. Obama/Biden 08

Mariann Pepitone,
You don’t understand that the fact that Barack Obama has gotten this far is a victory in & of itself, for all people. If he doesn’t win, the sun will still come up on November 5th. It seems everyone has done their homework on Obama. Anyone care to share their notes on McCain? Care to share that he’s an adulterer, left his disabled wife for another woman. Care to share how he fought tooth & nail to stop MLK day from being a national holiday. Since we have so many MLK lovers on board today, that doesn’t bother you? The fact that McCain has already committed us to 5 more years of war is he elected doesn’t bother anyone? I guess Obama has all the faults & McCain is just an angel. I guess I’m just throwed because $4.00 a gallon for gas bothers me. Seeing innocent women & men die unjustifiably & seeing families ripped apart because of this war bothers me. Watching college tuition continue to climb bothers me. But you guys keep on loving McCain. I guarantee we’ll regret him far more than Obama.

S. Adams: I loved every word of that. I could never say it like that. Yes, Obama thinks he’s greater than god but it is all going to change. I don’t believe he made history yet, he hasn’t been elected president. If so, that’s when he will make history however, I don’t believe that’s going to happen. In my opinion McCain is going to beat him. I just read on the internet that 85 of Hillary’s fundraiser’s have already donated to McCain so I am hoping her voters will switch to McCain.

Posted by: Lynn | August 28, 2008, 6:05 pm 6:05 pm

Dee Tee Gee: For your information if your reading up on politics, Biden voted for the war. Obama said he was against it but wasn’t there for the voting. Get a grip. Do you really think Obama is in this race for the country? Where have you been. Haven’t you read his past as a racist, white hater, anti-american? First Obama was going to pull troops in 2009, then in 2010 now its 2011. Hillary was going to start in 60 days. Obama just wants to make history like MLK that’s why he chose this day and on top of that using the speech of JFK. MLK was for all the people, Obama is for himself and what people can do for him.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm

Dee Tee Gee-to answer your question, first of all what they did was subscribe to the mentality that we are owed something, what they did was brow beat other African Americans that did not agree with them and bully them by threatning to kick them out of office if they did not vote for Obama, what they did was call them Uncle Toms for not being on the Obama Team, need I go on. I am an idividual with and independent mind. I did my homework because I refused to be hoodwinked into thinking that I owed anyone anything. I took the policies of both candidates and I reveiwed the thoroughly. I researched their voting records and their policies, and then I decided that Hillary Clinton was the individual that laid out the plans and policies that bes suit the country and the interest of my family and myself. Imagine when I made that decision known, that I was told that I owed it to the brother to give him a chance. I was told that I was not right for going against a brother. Are you kidding me? I did not feel that he was the right person for the job and the time and I still do not feel that he is, that is what I am ashamed of if you must know, The congressmen and women (Jones, The mayor of Philadelphia, the Congressman from GA, etc) all intimidated by blacks because people felt that they owed it to Obama, that is shameful. You are dead wrong about what i teach my kids. I teach my children that every individual is a a child of God and Color does not dictate your life, however, it was the hardest thing for me to do, the hardest conversation even more so than the typical Sex talk, for me to sit and talk to my boys and explain to them that in this society there are people that will not see you as equal, I had to explain to them that if they were out with their friends of other races and they were pulled over by the police that they would probably be treated differently than their friends these are 9 and 12 year old kids and I have to teach them about racism and hatred. I did not grow up with blinders, i’ve experienced it all at work, in stores you name it, however I refuse to have a victim mentality and I refuse to let ignorance dictate my future or the future of my children. That said the bottom line is I don’t care what color Obama is, he is a weak candidate with great speaches and the promise of hope and change but no substance and in the end if he is elected, he could possibly put us back 100 years, because it could very well be said in history that the first AA Presidency was a disaster and lets see how long it takes us to see another. I would 150% back an AA candidate with substance, experience and good Judgement, but I will not fall in line just because he is a brother, now way, now how. I color issue goes both ways.

Dee Tee Gee: When you talk about Oprah making it on her own, where have you been as always, the white people made Oprah a millionaire not the blacks. Haven’t you looked at her audience? 99% white. How come there are not a lot of blacks there. Is it because they only appear when is giving away a car, ipod, gifts, etc? Obama doesn’t give a darn about this country he only wants to make fame. He hasn’t made it until he is elected president and only god knows if that will happen or not.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

Kim, I remember eating lunch with a man years ago and he said basically the same thing you said about Obama, about putting this country back 100 years! He despised Bill Clinton completely. I couldn’t believe the hate he had in his heart for bill clinton. He felt clinton would completely destroy this country, and yet, we are still here, and clinton certainly did a better job than Bush! Gotta go and get ready for the DNC! Obama/Biden 08

Posted by: Lynn | August 28, 2008, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

Neil1785: You are so right because she suspended the roll call and Nancy didn’t want all her delegates to be counted because it could upset his nomination and it could have turned around. Her voters didn’t want her to do that and if I was in her place I would have told Nancy these are my delegates and they are all going to counted and I am having a roll call. Hillary gave it away for Obama probably like you say not to cause a riot with the blacks because they are always crying foul. They are nothing but whiner’s.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm

Hey, gotta comment real quick! Don’t wanna miss the DNC! About Obama telling blacks how to run their households, missing father figures, etc. He was telling the truth. Black folk don’t like their dirty laundry aired, but it’s true! Hey Rev. Wright was telling the truth. The truth hurts!! White folk don’t like their dirty laundry aired either! No race is better than the other! This is history in the making! Gotta make sure all my kin, friends, neighbors tune in!! Obama/Biden 08

Lynn: Yes, it is a big number when he is going to need the fundraising and why was he going after Hillary’s fundraiser’s after she suspended her campaign? They told his supporters no. There you have it. Hillary tried but they said no also. If he needed money that bad he should go to Wright, Farrakhan, Ayers the bomber, Father P and Rezko if he isn’t in jail for his crooked deals which Obamaosama covered up.

I’M BEGINNING TO HATE THE BLACKS NOW NOT BECAUSE THEY’RE VOTING A BLACK CANDIDATE BUT BECAUSE THEY’RE VOTING A STUPID IDIOT WITH ZERO KNOWLEDGE IN ECONOMY, NATIONAL SECURITY AND FOREIGN POLICY….I’M BEGINNING TO REALIZE NOW THAT BLACKS ARE THE MOST RACIST CREATURES CREATURES IN THIS WORLD. WHAT IF SLAVE HISTORY WAS REVERSED? IT COULD BE WORST….
We allow idiots to vote and thus shall we reap an Idiotic Result. All that really matters is that each gets what is coming to them .
“Obama has 143 days in the senate. That’s his experience. That’s it (unless you want to count “community organizer”. This guy wants to lead the free world and yet he’s never led anything. No track record. Nothing to say that he has leadership qualities. Good speaker? So what. He couldn’t get beyond an entry level job – if he could get hired for a job at all. Core values are unclear. He can’t command the trust that the President job requires.”
Obama has the worst track record of all 3 candidates when it comes to getting back to the Senate to vote – he’s missed more votes than either McCain or Hillary. Kind of makes you think he only wanted that Senate seat as a stepping stone to the presidency.
Harvard was recently forced to change its honor system to reflect the practices at other colleges — in 2001 a record 91% of Harvard students graduated cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude. Google it if you want to read more about the scandal. But, needless to say, honors at Harvard mean very little. The real test for a law student is getting published — the real test for a professor is getting published. Unfortunately, though, Obama never published any academic articles. McCain was a teenager in the Navy Academy. Obama as a teenager did terrible in school. Obama waited a decade to go into harvard law. Obama was 31 at Harvard law competing against people a decade younger. Easy to do well when you are 30 competing against kids. McCain sacrificed for his country. McCain flew fighter pilots. Obama is terrible with numbers. Obama says 57 states. Obama says 100 million died in Burma. Obama says 10,000 died in a tornado in Kansas. Obama did get affirmative action he got poor grades at Columbia and got into harvard. Obama was 30 when he was in harvard law. McCain was a teenager at the navy academy. Obama as a teenager when to Occidental College and then was able to transfer to Columbia and got poor grades at Columbia. McCain was tested at 130 IQ in the navy and flew planes. Obama is terrible with numbers and could never have flown planes.
“Elizabeth Hasselbeck says Obama isn’t brilliant”.
Look at him on debates with Hillary. He’s too dumb subjective. He is unable to talk in-depth about any of his so-called policies that he actualy stole from Hillary’s briliant ideas as proven at the 4 debates he had with her.
Ben Stein was on Jimmy Kimmel last year promoting his new book. Stein knows how to make a dollar or several million. Kimmel asked Stein if Obama should read his book. Stein said no, he should start with something more suited to his education level on the economy like simple addition and subtraction.
Obama took private lessons in economy just last year but apparently without great success according to his teacher:. He said Obama was slow on the uptake.
I now question Obama’s credibility of being a Magna Cum Laude from Harvard… HOW IN FACT DID HE EARN IT?… he can hardly debate sensibly on the spot without a prepared speech written by a paid speechwriter… he’s typically slow at impromptu speaking and most of the time he stutters and at the loss for words and he hardly uses or knows the right terminology like the difference between denounce and reject … evaded crunch-time debates with Hillary and now evading McCain’s a number of requested debates… evading public view of McCain-Obama debate by Obama himself selecting only one debate on the date that falls on a holiday when everyone is out vacationing… things like these do not make up an intellectual that has achieved higher if not the highest honor in the academe… not to mention the fact that as an adult he still practiced classroom-type of cheating like he plagiarized his speeches, bribed DNC delegates/superdelegates to seal his nomination, lied to the highest degrees… plus the fact that he as well as his wife had more black professors than whiteys and so on and so forth…And Besides, Obama & his wife were afforded the luxury of 230 points added to their SATs in order for an african-american to get into an Ivy League school. It pretty much points out that they must be too dumb that they need to be given the extra 230 points before they can even take the SAT!!
With Obama’s nomination, who is totally inexpert, amateurish, inadequate and unqualified for the job as President, Democrats have sealed their ultimate defeat. With Hillary’s nomination they may have perhaps had a little chance of winning the GE: they gambled it away. From now on they are doomed.

I’M BEGINNING TO HATE THE BLACKS NOW NOT BECAUSE THEY’RE VOTING A BLACK CANDIDATE BUT BECAUSE THEY’RE VOTING A STUPID IDIOT WITH ZERO KNOWLEDGE IN ECONOMY, NATIONAL SECURITY AND FOREIGN POLICY….I’M BEGINNING TO REALIZE NOW THAT BLACKS ARE THE MOST RACIST CREATURES IN THIS WORLD. WHAT IF HISTORY OF BLACK SLAVERY WAS REVERSED?

I still can’t beleive how many on these bloggs are not greatful for hat the Clintons did for many people when they where in office. So many demorcates are jealous of her and Bill Clinton that is sad or they just that polarizing people or rasicist like the ones I see on the media and sometime they have there own show on ABC call Orah as I have always seen, well they persecuted the Jews all our life so now they do the same with the Clintons and her 18 million, I don’t forget what they did to me

Gloria, I totally agree. Clintons also did a lot of good things for the Black community and they seem to forget those in front of their messiah.
THE REASON WHY OBAMAS AND THEIR FOLLOWERES HATE THE CLINTONS IS THAT THEY’RE EXTREMELY SO JEALOUS OF THE CLINTONS, THE ONLY POLITICIANS WHO MANAGED WITH UTMOST INTELLIGENCE TO GET ALL AMERICANS SOME DECENT LIVING – JOB SECURITY WHICH COMES WITH GOOD HEALTHCARE, AFFORDABLE FOOD, HOUSING AND EDUCATION, AND WHO BROUGHT ABOUT TRUE PEACE AND PROPERITY IN THE 90′S AS I REMEMBER SO VIVIDLY. THEY ARE JEALOUS THAT IF THE CLINTONS GO BACK TO WHITE HOUSE, THEY’LL BE ABLE TO CLEAN UP THE BUSH MESS AGAIN AND CLINTON CLAN WILL MAKE HISTORY HAVING TO SERVE MORE THAN 8 YEARS WITH PEACE AND PROSPERITY, HAVING THE FORMER PRESIDENT AS THE FIRST MAN, HAVING THE FIRST LADY PRESIDENT AND HAVING THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT… A STREAK OF AMERICAN HISTORY BREAKTHROUGHS… SOMETHING THE KENNEDY’S WOULD NOT LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE THAT WILL OVERSHADOW JFK WHO, IN COMPARISON WITH BILL CLINTON, IS NOT THAT SO CLEAN AFTER ALL WITH ALL THE MISTRESSES HE HAD HAD DURING HIS ADMINISTRATION.

Lynn: Good for you go see your kinfolk and help them wash their dirty laundry. And while your at it take a walk on the southside in the Englewood area where Obama never showed his face to talk to the parent’s of young kids shot to death by their own race. But of course, he lives in Hyde Park in a mansion, why should he do that]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]
Lynn: I am white and I don’t have problems with the black race but apparently you have a problem with the whites. If you are complaining about the whites, take a walk thru Englewood on the southside and march with the people against the blacks killing each other. That’s one area that Obama has not been to. He didn’t even want to go into Philadelphia in the black area while campaigning. Figure that one out.

Neil1785: Neil, don’t pay any attention to what Lynn says because she is half witted and don’t know the first thing about politics. All she knows is that Obama is making his speech tonight nothing else. Lynn has been making stupid statements on this board and don’t have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. She is like Obama who can’t form the words to make his own speech he is using the speech of JFK. MLK didn’t use anyone’s speech he just had the ability to get up and speak. And believe me Obama is no MLK.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

Lynn, I’ve been reading your comments, and I’m wondering why you think it’s ok for racism against white people, but not if it’s against black people. Racism is a double edged sword, it goes both ways and frankly I had no opinion of Obama when he first came on the scene. After I heard the Rev. Wright speeches railing against all white people and the vile things that were said during his sermons, it made me wonder why Obama sat with his wife and children praising God and halleluja amen for 20 yrs. He must have believed it. Most people would have been appalled and found a new church that were more aligned with their code of ethics. If he had been white sitting in a church that preached KKK beliefs he would have been vilified and slammed in the media. Obama is getting a pass because of his race. Everyone is so afraid of saying something for fear of being labeled a racist. If everyone in the country wants to be treated equally then get rid of the BET channel, or how about the WET channel. (White entertainment television) or how about Ivory magazine instead of Ebony magazine. Why do we have to separate ourselves by race when we are all Americans.

Posted by: S Adams | August 28, 2008, 7:31 pm 7:31 pm

Davis: Just for the record where in the world did Obama get those giant teeth? I think I seen them somewhere but not on a black or white person. He has black entertainment here tonight that can’t sing a note. What a joke they are. I couldn’t believe it when I heard them. This is another convention night of unorganized entertainment like the first night. If it wasn’t for the Clinton’s his convention would be a disaster.

The important thing now is, we will have a black govornment, black leadership, like the black nations in our motherland, Africa. And Now we can unite our motherland Africa with America. The whites, the spanish the english and all others will not count anymore.

Posted by: Tom | August 28, 2008, 7:39 pm 7:39 pm

englightened: I live in Chicago, born and raised here but Obama hasn’t done one thing for Illinois. Where have you been? And when your talking about president’s like JFK, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Abe Lincoln, those are president’s with intelligence. What happened to Obama. Even Biden claims he isn’t ready to be president that’s why Biden will be running the country not Obama. He will be president in name only if elected.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 7:47 pm 7:47 pm

neil1785: All the blacks in America are not Africa-American they are black Ameican’s. If they come from Africa and become citizen’s here they are African American’s other than that American blacks are African decent. Obama is half Black and half White which makes him Mulatto which means he is the offspring of a black father and white mother. That word is in the dictionary and on the internet. He likes to be referred to as black, not so and never will be. Jessie Jackson is black. Now there was one black republican in the 1800′s or 1900′s that had one vote at the convention. Someone tried to dispute me that the word Mulatto does not exist. Yes, it does although blacks don’t like that name. They would rather call Obama black when he really is not.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 7:58 pm 7:58 pm

Tom: You are so wrong. There will never be a black government. And remember Obama is not all black he is half white but would like to be black. Africa doesn’t mean a thing to me because I am not African I am white. Just like the blacks are proud to be black I like being white. This campaign is not about race it is based on who is more responsible to run this country and it isn’t Obama. Biden will be running it for Obama while Obama will be president in name only. Let’s face the facts as they are, he doesn’t have the intelligence.

Well people, back to your corners. This isn’t about statistics or making history. Too much is being based simply on one election. Yes, it could be ground-breaking. Yes, it could be disappointing. But the messages of the best human activist is one of unity and looking to ourselves instead of hate. Instead of looking now to whatever the mass media may be feeding you, look to the integrity of a candidate. Not just their funds, looks, or checkbooks. Look at the issues and maybe reevaluate your own values. Change is real and it can happen as long as people believe that it can.

OBAMA is NO MLK!

Posted by: Darla | August 28, 2008, 8:45 pm 8:45 pm

The Democrats already HAVE ‘taken back’ the government. That’s why things are so screwed up. Sad that Nancy and Obama aren’t more concerned with America than how they come across to Europeans and selling (trying anyway) books.
Funny how the Dems go on and on about substance and issues. So what do we get? Rock bands, fireworks, cheesy sets, leaching off of women’s suffrage and Dr. King, text messages, slick internet campaigns…oh, yeah, and ‘excitement’…oh, and money…money, money, money…you know, that stuff that only Republicans so dearly love apparently.
McCain should just quit out of disgust over this dog and pony show and save American further embarrassment from the hysteria on the Left. We can, hopefully, endure four years and the ‘change’ garbage ain’t going to fly again for otherwise sensible Americans.

More facts no one wants to ackknowledge; The assassination of MLK was engineered by Russian Communists because MLK was not radical enough for the communist movement, while his successor Malcolm X was. The same communists who Obama & the Clinton’s promote through their Socialist agenda. Old Scratch waits at the crossroads.

I just first Give All Honer To GOD. I am here in America the land of the free, and now we 45 years after MLK ask us to embrace his dream, we have started to feel the need to embrace not just his dreams ,but after living in America, the land of the free, We have felt less free,we have a goverment that wants us with less rights,to be less free,Americans feels the pain of not being in the land of the free. Americans have a Dream, that every American should have the same rights, they too have a Dream.

Gore says Lincoln?
My community thinks Obama’s more like “Hitler”
Reading all posts worries me tremendously. So many people have their heads in the sand.
Don’t they realize that Hitler was Germany’s “Man of Change”?
He ran on the same platform …. he was going to bring about great changes to benefit everyone. Well, he certainly did!
The citizens rallied to support him – cheered him on as they watched in idolization. Sounding familiar? And after all the “changes”, we know what happened next.
With Barack we will be asking for bigger government, bigger taxes to support all the “giveaway” programs he is proposing, less money in everyone’s pockets, and the loss of even more small businesses. You think big business runs everything now? Just wait!
The government already wants to tell us what light bulbs to buy, how our food should be grown (and who can grow it), what we can and can’t wear, what can legally be put into our childrens’ vaccinations, etc.
Pretty soon we’ll be told we can only have so many children (like China already does). Where does it all end?
I have thought and have seen the paralleism between the Hitler campaign and the Obama campaign. It’s scary but true.
The people of Germany idolized Hitler and fell at his feet, much like Americans are doing to Obama. Hitler had a hidden agenda as I believe Obama has as well.
There are way to many “unknowns” about Obama. I don’t think America really likes this guy that much, they just want change and since McCain is a republican, America automatically tunes him out because of Bush.
McCain is very different from Bush and will be the best candidate to lead America.
I pray America will come to her senses and vote Obama out…..if not, America will enter very dark days as did Germany under Hitler.

Reverend Wright was right!

Posted by: Roots from Germany Guy | August 29, 2008, 6:46 am 6:46 am

The reason many Democrat supporters will not vote for Obama is because they are embarrassed of him, his life, his unfair tactics and his beliefs. And they still don’t know all about him.
1. They don’t want a candidate that has been in a twenty year relationship with Reverend Wright and the Trinity United Church of Christ.
2. They don’t’ want a candidate that has a twenty year relationship with Father Pflaeger and refers to him as his compass in life
3. They don’t want a candidate that went to a church that supports Louis Farrakhan, an anti Semitic racist, that has led a rally of 20,000 Nation of Islam members to support Obama in Chicago
4. They don’t want to defend Black Liberation theology.
5. They don’t want a candidate that lies about his relationship with Tony Rezko, the Syrian Criminal that sold his property to Obama and supported his campaign.
6. They don’t want a candidate that could work with a domestic terrorist, William Ayers.
7. They don’t want a candidate that Hamas supports.
8. They don’t want a candidate that Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam support
9. They don’t want a candidate that has a wife that has just now realized she was proud of our country.
10. They don’t want a candidate that denies Florida and Michigan their voices
11. They don’t want a candidate that mentions 57 states in his speeches. 50 states in the USA and 57 states in the Nation of Islam (IOC website)
12. They don’t want a candidate that fights unfair and hyjacks Michigan delegate votes from his opponent.
13. They don’t want a candidate that is inexperienced, especially dealing with military issues.
14. They don’t want a candidate that considers it a loss to not to be able to attend his anti American, racist Church.
15. They don’t want a candidate that has a “non practicing” Muslim father, but avoids the entire discussion of his father.
16. They don’t’ want a candidate that won’t debate
17. They don’t’ want a candidate that misleads the youth with an ‘Obama girl and her behind in their face”
18. They don’t want a candidate that says he’s an African American and missed the MLK Remembrance Day and the Louisiana Black Caucus meeting
19. They don’t want a candidate that enjoys laughing at sexism.
20. They don’t want a candidate that switches his position on gun control, FISA, the war in Iraq and abortion issues.
21. They don’t want a candidate that showcases his daughters on TV shows.
22. They don’t’ want a candidate that has poor judgment..
23. They don’t’ want a candidate named; Barack Hussein Obama
24. He is embarrassing.
25. He scares them to death.

DEE TEE GEE. I can’t believe that after your long and boring diatribe you had the unmitigated gall and stupidity to set OJ Simpson up as a poor misguided black man who wasn’t accepted by the white community OJ, for crying out loud!!! Where did you park your brains??
And no, I am not a repug, but a patriotic democrat who proudly endorses Barack Obama, and find that people like . RABBLE ROUSERS like you , who continuously propagate the black- white issue, in fact do more to deepen whatever black white rift exists…hame on you.

Dee Tee Gee. I criticised your post when you irrationally brought OJ into the argument. That was an error of judgement and does reflect an undertone of racism. That being said, I believe in most everything you have posted, however with your OJ comments you might think you’re winning the battle but you ‘ll lose the war. And please dont lend any dignity to the rants of that certified racist NEIL 1785, by commenting. Suffice to say that he is a low life hater who will stoop to anything to propagate his ill conceived opinions. To wit 230 SATS. Right he was there to see it. I think Dr King’s dream will be fulfilled if Obama is NOT elected on the “content of his character.” Obama has made this presidential campaign about RACE, he does NOT have the good character or experience to be president. You can see that by his associations, his aspirations and his “Rock Star” mentality. It is not about serving the American people – it is about him. I think Dr. King would be appalled about some of the moral standing that Obama has taken on God, marriage, gays, and abortion and staying in Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years!
