Column Inches

So, I was at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium this morning for "Good Morning America," and yes, the Greek columns on the stage look a bit weird.

Though, as Ben Smith points out, President Bush had an ornate set with Greek columns when he accepted the GOP presidential nomination in 2004.

The Obama campaign says this is another one of those idiotic phony issues trumped up by the GOP and conservative media that makes no difference whatsoever to voters.

What say you?

Agreed 100%!!! The question is why do you media let them get away with idiocies???

Our nation is going down the tubes and McCain is upset about those COLUMNS????
No wonder McCain equals:
Higher deficits for US; more debt to China
Lower minimum wage
Less pay, less safety for the worker, greater wealth for the rich
No incentives for jobs to be in the U.S.
No Social Security benefits?
No habeus corpus, no protection from illegal incarceration of American Citizens, kidnapping/ torture, loss of personal privacy, more prisons, more Constitution raping.
Women will have no rights,Taliban style. We will have lower pay for equal work, no Roe vs. Wade, no legal contraceptives, no child care outside the home. Women will again die horribly from illegal abortions. More newborns will be murdered.
Crime will increase as criminal cartels take control of contraceptive sales. And the starving steal, mug, or burglarize to feed their families.
Since school vouchers are Republican”s way of siphoning tax dollars to evangelical schools and starving public education, our children will learn only right wing world visions and who deserves to live in it.
McCain”s ignorance of and right wing sexual obsessions about the Internet will create laws limiting its use.
McCain will reinstate the draft and a foreign policy inline with his antiquated warrior fantasies. McCain”s foreign policy naïvity will lead us to wars, perhaps WWIII. And the use of nuclear weapons??.
And McBush/McCheney raves on aBOUT COLUMNS!!!!!

The GOP is a party of idiots and hypocrites. What else do you expect from them?

Posted by: Kevin | August 28, 2008, 10:38 am 10:38 am

I say this is another one of those idiotic phony issues trumped up by the GOP and conservative media that makes no difference whatsoever to voters.
What else are they going to say? “Hey gang, thanks for the last eight years and all, but we’re not quite done yet. How’s about another four! Yeeeeeeeeeeahhh!”
Well no, they’re probably not going to say that. So it’s greek columns, Britney and Paris, Jeremiah Wright, and anything other than the obvious–that our country has been run into the ditch and they were the drunkards behind the wheel.

McCain is an empty suite with nothing to offer.

I say the Obama campaign has lost their minds. Why would you do such an overblown ceremony when the celebrity/rock star criticism worked so well?
Obama has lost his mojo. Look at how irrational he looks when he’s in decline.

Posted by: jeff | August 28, 2008, 10:39 am 10:39 am

Charles said it best- Has he lost his mind?
“The Berlin folly — in English.
The Superbowl Halftime Show — without the game.
What’s the finish? Maybe Obama’s got Zhang Yimou to do the hidden-rope trick, and have him lifted, Beijing-style, to the heavens when he’s done. Will he reappear three days later at the Bird’s Nest?
Or maybe he’ll just do a Napoleon and coronate himself. By the time Napoleon made himself emperor, he had won the Battles of Lodi, of Arcole, of Rivoli, of the Pyramids and of Marengo. And had promugulated the Napoleonic Code. He had yet to write a single autobiography.

To all of those throwing around insults, the fact of the matter is the spectacle will in fact affect the average American viewer.
Greek colums, a giant crowd, being lifted by a podium on hydrolics. Come on, this is going to turn people off.

Posted by: jeff | August 28, 2008, 10:42 am 10:42 am

Those columns aren’t “Greek columns,” they’re “Greek Revival columns.” Obama won’t be speaking from Mt. Olympus; he’ll be speaking with a backdrop that resembles a public library, a city hall, or a post office.

Erick
There are quite a few things wrong with Obama’s campaign. Where should we start? How about his trying to silence an advertisement questioning his ties to Ayers? SO MUCH FOR FREE SPEECH UNDER THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY

A lot of flap over nothing is what I think.

Posted by: smith | August 28, 2008, 10:48 am 10:48 am

The media is feeding this ridiculous attention to unimportant trivia and it plays right into McCain’s hands. If the media insisted on covering issues, we’d all be a lot better off. Many of these “attack ads” that are critiqued aren’t even running, they’re just fed to the media. Free publicity. Free manipulation. And we’re dumb enough to swallow it all.

Jeff: The reason it is being held in a stadium is because Obama has more than 20 followers at one time showing up, unlike your McCain who puts the 20 people to sleep in 10 minutes.

Posted by: beck | August 28, 2008, 10:52 am 10:52 am

This is ridiculous. I wonder how many presidential candidates have appeared before columns before? Besides George Bush, I find it hard to believe that other candidates haven’t used things at the convention to make them seem, uh, presidential.
What is different about Obama using them? Is it because he’s a Democrat? Young-ish? Hmmm… what could it be. What could it be.
I keep getting the feeling that so many people here, and so many of the pundits, are kind of saying that the boy doesn’t know his place.

Posted by: Gretchen | August 28, 2008, 10:52 am 10:52 am

More recently the republicans used a set with columns in I believe Virginia. I have to say though that the vitriol of the anti-Obama comments is a little disturbing.
I mean I know its gotta blow that your guy couldn’t pull off anything like this but maybe the problem is with your candidate and not Obama. Just a little food for thought since you guys seem to be a little malnourished on that front.

Posted by: Gary in Toronto | August 28, 2008, 10:53 am 10:53 am

Jake,
I agree with the Obama campaign. Why does this matter? Shouldn’t the scene be a bit nice? What… they should have a jungle out there?
I mean this is the kind of stuff the GOP does that makes me less likely to vote for them. They don’t talk about any new ideas. Just their recycled garbage. It’s not surprising that a party who’s devoid of any ideas has to always change the topic to meaningless and most irrelevant subjects. How does the backdrop hurt Americans? How does talkin about it get us more jobs?
GOP Stupidy has really hit a new low.

Actually Jake it was Reuters that first reported Obama’s stage was made to look like a “Greek temple”, not the GOP. Obama’s people did nothing to correct them, until everybody started laughing of course. Now Obama’s camp wants to blame the GOP for their own screw-ups? Ha. Nice try.
Nobody is going to mistake Bush’s ’04 backdrop for a temple, or anything more than vague White House imagery…which he was sort of living in at the time. There was also a Presidential seal. Stupid Bush…thinking he’s the President. He should have made a fake seal like Obama right?

Bush and McCain are arrogant in their personal claims with little ambition for the country. While Obama has a lot of ambition for the country and is humble in his personal speech.
The whole reason he wanted to do the speech at Invesco field is to open up the convention to those who have worked so hard in this campaign.
His campaign and his economic policy are all doing things from the bottom-up, not top-down.

Let’s start with Obama is wealthy…he had to achieve it. Mccain never has.
oh and McCain lets look at mccain…

and was right that the surge would bring down violence …
only problem is that the goal of the surge was political reconciliation…
reduction in violence was just the tool. would you say that a hammer worked just because it hit the nail?

Talking about the third term of GW Bush, obama following every step of the beginning for Bush, from lack of experience, little/no record of accomplishment, to making feeling-good speeches by fooling to drink beer together or hoping together, and choosing a daddy to run his government.
Now, before his spin of words, he built a Temple, because Bush built a similar thing for Bush’s speech.
OK, we are convinced, Bush and obama are the same, the same Nothingness, deceptor, and disaster.

Posted by: Joe | August 28, 2008, 11:18 am 11:18 am

Hey, I’ll give you this one a bit. Fair enough. But there are differences that make Obama’s much more “God-like.” First, at least Bush was President at the time and a lot of that stage was very Presidential. Second, nobody in the media was treating GWB as a God at the time, rather much the opposite. Now, you have this “God-like” (vommit) figure, giving a speech in this huge, outdoor arena, with many more grandiose columns. The whole thing says, “Look at me, I’m a God, worship me.”
Granted, this really is a silly issue. It’s not the reason I’m not voting for Obama – it’s his Marxist policies that scare me more!

Dems are fiscally irresponsible – spend, spend, spend. Bill Clinton was the exception, and was a GREAT president. Bush was an abomination. But don’t you see the key here, centrists like Clinton and McCain always work best. Not far righties like Bush, or far lefties like Obama.

Posted by: jeff | August 28, 2008, 11:18 am 11:18 am

McCain’s just trying to deflect attention from the fact that he still hasn’t been able to give away enough tickets to fill the 10,000 seat arena in Dayton to announce his VP. More protesters are expected than attendees at this point. Word is McCain wanted to move the event to one of his mansions, but they wouldn’t be able to fill that either.

@Mark,
Right. Let’s see. Twice in three years!!! Man, Zerobama worked twice in three years! But, let’s what happened to this “twice”.
“In just two years Obama has worked across the aisle twice with Richard Lugar, a republican on Nuclear disarmament.”
Really? Zerobama disarmed Nuclear bombs! You must be mistaken his gave-in to his nuclear waste friends and comapaign donors from Illinois.
“Obama has worked across the aisle on the Ethics reform bill.”
You are probably too young to know, but for your information, it was a bill did not become law for technicality despite passing the senate by more than 95 votes, before he came to being in the Senate. Now his Lord Daddy Reid trying hard to boost his Nothingness Zero record give him the bill to manage, which passed by a 98-2.
For this phony, he has less than 1% of the ability and capability of a president like WJC, who persuaded the congress to pass his economic policy bill at a vote of 51-49, which resulted in 8 years of unprecedented prosperity and peace in the country’s history.
For comparison, his opponent indeed does have a record of working with democrats, about 50% of time and getting about 50% of promises accomplished, despite objections from his Republican side.

DL,
Obama consulted with Rezko on the purchase of his house in Hyde Park. The owner of the house Obama purchased would NOT sell the house separately from the lot, so it was arranged that Rezko’s wife would purchase the land. The day after Obama closed, Rezko’s wife closed on the lot.
The moral here is: Obama would not have been able to get that house were it not for Rezko arranging to buy the lot next door.

Obamalympia …just a stage setting for another empty suit who is so similar to Bush in inexperience that a huge false show has to be set up every time he appears so that the audience won’t notice that he actually has no program and no ability to govern. Where is the rock band that brought the kiddies in to make it look like there was a big audience to hear a speech? All long term Dems that I know are either staying home or STILL planning to vote for McCain or Nader. As an Independent, I am still looking at anyone but Obama.

It doesn’t matter what the stage looks like, the right will find a reason to make fun of it. That’s their only political strategy. Don’t come up with any original ideas, just ridicule others.

Obama is the exact opposite of Bush. Obama was born with nothing and worked his way to the top. Bush was born on third base, thinking he hit a triple, and proceeded to steal second.

McCain told them to read it in his books.
A presidential candidate should never react that way to a question like that.

but Obama bought his HOUSE with money HE EARNED…that he had to apply for…he had to measure if he could afford…and balance what it meant for the future of his kids and their life.
and HE himself had to actually go through the struggles and research with banks.
hmmm….lets see McCain not so much.
and we have no idea how those homes came to be purchased because he SAYS they are HIS HIOMES …yet Cindy is off the table and she purchsed them.
hmmm
lets talk some more about homes.
Let’s actually have the details disclosed about those homes and how they were paid for …because they are not.
with the lobbyist team surrounding them…and we know Cindy and her father were the ones giving things and receiving from Charles Keating…why do we not have the details of John mcCain’s homes that he lives in.
If he lives there they are his homes aren’t they?

Why is Obama the candidate with superior judgment?
Because he is schooling Bush and McCain on foreign policy:
1. Talking to Iran
2. Drawing a timetable for troop withdrawal in Iraq
3. Opposing a the war in Iraq(worst foreign policy in our history).
This is judgment you can believe in.

I saw the columns this morning on Good Morning America. They don’t weird at all, they look fine to me. I don’t get what the big deal is. It seems that McCain, Bush, Rove and the Republicans don’t have issues to talk about so they bring up this nonsense.

Posted by: Sal | August 28, 2008, 11:34 am 11:34 am

BEck – and under Dems what will we get
Higher deficits for US; more debt to China (** still need to pay for all those new govt programs **)
Lower payroll/employment as business cut costs/employment to cover increased corporate taxes
Lower growth as companies/entrepeneurs decrease strategic investment meet increased regulatoty costs
Higher prices as tariffs are imposed on other countries exporting goods into the US
Less law and order, increase in domestic terrorism as police/federal powers are relaxed
Families will find it harder to find jobs/juggle daycare as unemployment and expenses increase, but – hey! – they can have protected sex or an abortion, so all’s good?
Crime will increase (see above, you can’t take funding and tools away from the police without an impact)
Since teacher unions are so strong a voice to the Dem party, expect more public funds going to failing school systems, while union/tenure positions make accountability and responsibility a thing of the past. Our children will learn nothing to help compete in the new world because the older/more senior teachers have no incentive to learn/develop.
More freewheeling content on the web (porn is still the #1 revenue generator, followed by gambling) continues to destroy families, and teens/young adults continue to be most victimized.
Military enrollment continues to be dominated by lower income boys/girls looking for a way to pay to college or get a job. Enrollment declines, similar to that of fed govt workers, as support for the military diminishes.
Foreign policy becomes a Carteresque joke, where our allies wonder if they can rely on the US to do anything but talk and our enemies keep pushing the envelope.
But hey – Obama gives a great speech!
[In case you missed the irony – You can take both sides to an extreme that’s unappealing — and false. Don’t expect to be taken seriously if you paint everything as a us/them, good/bad situation. Voting for McCain doesn’t mean the end of the world, just as voting for Obama doesn’t mean everything will be rosy).

I hate talking to people who don’t know what they are talking about… go look it up the Tribune did a story on it as soon as all this came out…
Now Cindy’s homes that ARE John’s homes…cause he lives there have a long history with her father and lobbyists visiting.
…not to even mention Charles keating…whom got contracts and “legal” donations were back and forth between the families…
hmm …sounds a little like a side lot purchase but on a major and long lasting level.
but we wouldn’t know Cindy and the family details are off limkits aren’t they…

As far as Ayers, the ad there is just asking about the connection between the two. It went from “he lives in the same neighborhood” to “we’ve talked a few times” to “we served on a board together” to “we’re friendly” to…. who knows. And that’s what WE want to know.

First let me point out to you libs below bringing up the home, McCains wife owns the homes noy McCain, they were own prior also (all but one) to their marriage!
How many homes does your beloved Gore own? or Kerry?
Now lets go to Obama’s where there is actually questions on who bought the house, the deal he got through his buddy Convicted criminal Rezko!!
Obama who was born with a golden spoon in his mouth, cant even provide proof he was born in this country!!
Now lets go to the coloums their is a big difference between Bush who by the way spoke in front of Roman columns that were set up on the stage at the RNC, and Obama who thinks he is the messiah going to a different location and speaking like he is Zeus in front of Greek columns.
Beck – all drafts were initiated by democrats, ok and your libs tried to start the draft already!
Beck your liberal appeasement policies lead us to War not Strength, sorry wrong again – look at WW2 and 1 and this war
Beck – The public school system is bad, it is a liberal indocrination not teaching our children anything. school vouchers give the parents the choice to where they send their children, by even you own comments the parents will be sending their kids to religous shows that the parents will think they are better! oh by the way it costa an average of 13,000 dollars a year per child in public school to get taught nothing, and only about 5,000 a year in private school where 95% go on to college! so vouches will save us money!
newborns being murdered is because of Obama
all equal rights bill were passed because of Republicans
see it seems your a perfect example of why our public education needs to be fixed!
Jobs are going over seas because the libs are taxing the corporations, we tax the corporations more then any other country except China and Japan!
the dems are bankrupting social sercurity!
Minimum wage the only people i know that make that are children that work!
Criminal combatents caught on the battlefield do not get Habeus corpes
What about Obama saying certain reporters should be jailed.
Roe v Wade in itself is unconstitutional it is up to the states.
Please note their were no known cases of woman dieing due to illegal abortions in the 60′s and 70′s that was all a lie about the same as you socialists do now.
You libs would rather see Americans die then a female interrogator talk to a terrorist because that is what you call torture!
obama speaks and says nothing!! People are dying in the countries that have the socialized health care that the messiah wants to bring here
People are losing jobs now because the Libs took a vacation and will not allow drilling, yes they will lie to us and say they are for it, but yet they will not force Pelosi’s hand to allow a vote, and when they do they will put on extreme conditions of drilling all why people starve and lose jobs, all in the name of Socialism!!
And do not forget Obama threatening news orgs that they will lose money or be tax more if they report on Ayers (CNN and Fox 5 that is collapse under the pressure) and his surrogates sending out letters threatening to sue anyone that starts a 527 against Obama!

Obama bought HIS home with his own money. His friend (and he had lots o wealthy friends it just happened to be a dumb move to pick rezko’s wife…who made money on the deal… so that kind of eliminates the “favor” aspect of your argument duh)
and
let’s stick with facts…You DO NOT KNOW if the mcCain’s got those homes clean…the press did not even know what homes he owned or didn’t own.
Rezko’s wife who bought that adjacent land MADE MONEY off this deal that you are trying to accuse them of some favor…. a significant amount of money…
Cindy made something off of the contracts she gave Keating. just no one really knows because it was all legal even if unethical.
and we still do not know the details of Cindy’s wealth even though John mccain lioves off of that wealth.

Posted by: dl | August 28, 2008, 11:56 am 11:56 am

DL,
What is so hard to understand????
Obama bought a house he COULD NOT AFFORD. Rezko had to step in to buy the land because the seller wanted to sell it as a package deal, not individually.
Yes, Obama bought it with his own money – BUT THAT MONEY WAN’T ENOUGH TO GET THE HOUSE, SO HE HAD TO RELY ON A POLITICAL CONTRIBUTOR.
STOP THE SPIN. HE’S GUILTY. HE ADMITTED IT.

dl to a Republican if its legal that is all that matters. If its not ethical is of no consequence to them where money is involved, take T Boone Pickens as a fine example. he and his corporate raiders legaly took money out of employee retirement plans then started up a new plan for the retiree’s of coures their annuity was cut most of the time by up to 50%, that occured until congress stepped in and changed the regs Reagan allowed changed. Then again the Republicans changed those regulations in the mid 90′s when they took congress over. Thats why retiremnt fund mangagers are very careful now not to earn to much on the retirees funds to keep the corporate thieves at bay.

Great Democratic convention, The Democrats can be proud of all their achievement, but most of all they are showing the strenght of intellect being used as an instrument in making sound, logical judgements in the resolving of the important issues facing America & the wider world. The Democrats are celebrating their vision of returning America to it’s rightful place as an economic giant with a moral core. That’s what is really happening at the convention. Celebrate the Change!!
Also for the Republicans that cannot be civil and must try to denegrate what is an absolutely historical and happening moment. Realize nobody loves spoil sports. Try to imagine that respect & decency is something other than words.

Posted by: Elitist | August 28, 2008, 12:10 pm 12:10 pm

My two cents:
Obviously, the convention organizers did not intend to allude to a Greek temple in which Obama could appear as a god. However, the visual allusion is there, otherwise people wouldn’t be noticing it.
Bush 2004: The columns are more figurative and (somewhat) less subtle. They just don’t have that…”Spartacus” look…Also, Bush was already president at the time, so the White House imagery might have been more appropriate for him. Obama is not president yet.
Here, it looks like they are building an exact replica of the Rose Garden, complete with press podium. To me, this is obnoxious. Obama’s advisors are saying to themselves, “we need to get people used to the visual of Obama in the White House. They aren’t comfortable with him yet.” Somewhat cheesy ad condescending.
If the columns are meant to invoke King’s famous speech, it is hubris. Suggesting that Obama’s speech will have the same impact and significance as King’s BEFORE the speech is even made? Hubris.
If the columns are meant to invoke a boring run-of-the-mill government building? Boring and cheesy.

Ryan:
Actually, I don’t really care if he wants to portray himself that way. Its not that far off from what another candidate (D or R) might do. I think its cheesy, sorry.
I do think it is a mistake for the Obama campaign to select such a scene…the realistic aspect of the model evokes a temple and a facade. If McCain did it, it would also be cheesy. As before, I don’t think the Bush video columns were as…temply…heh.
Also, both candidates sent proxies to Georgia. It is part of the presidential posturing that comes naturally to both sides…so no, I don’t care that McCain sent people to Georgia.

Many voters have been inveigled

John McCain.
The man is untutored in skillful
diplomacy and the judicious use
of military power when necessary.
His policies will weaken the
armed forces and bankrupt the
economy.

Obama’s ego has gotten the best of him once again.
And it looks like that huge ego has to be fed quite often.
He already has the teenagers, the Hollywood stars, 95% of AA, so exactly who is this supposed to impress?
This won’t help Obama connect with the voters already unsure of him.

“Last I checked Obama was being funded heavily by oil execs”
According to FEC records compiled by open secrets Obama has received almost $423K from oil execs, employess etc. That is about 0.1% of his total donations.
McCain has received over $1,500,000 from the same industry, $200K of that was in the last month alone. That is about 0.9% of his total haul.
One candidate is more dependent upon oil money than the other and his name is John McCain

Rick C,
As the law states the group only has to devote a majority (aka 50.1%) of its money to non political purposes and is allowed under the law of the united states (as opposed to Rodina Obama) to air political ads. As long as 50.1% of their money is set aside for voter registration and what not they have broken no laws.

Posted by: Belle Starr | August 28, 2008, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

BECK – Unlike others, I do actually read what the candidates are proposing and then consider the likelihood of success and the ramifications. Ultimately, Obama’s plan to fix problems will raise my taxes and what’s the payback on my increased “contribution” to the national wallet? Obama’s economic policies would pose obstacles to national employment and growth prospects. His proposed tax on “windfall oil profits” penalizes an industry that makes lower profits than traditional manufacturing, employs millions, and is already a leading investor in alternate energy development. His proposed alternative energy plans includes “requiring” companies over whom he has no authority to do things they either do or do not want to do. His recent flips on Georgia/Russia show how much he has to learn about foreign policy (and I don’t want another Pres who’s VP is making critical decisions like that). And on and on … While his promises sound great, they’re lacking in foundation to make them work – even if they could get through Congress in the first place.

I see nothing wrong with the scene they’ve created. How can it possibly be worse than conscripting the Utah National Guardsmen, who arrived in New Orleans to help the people there, to instead act as a backdrop for Bush? Or the scene straight out of Hollywood they made for Bush’s speech in Jackson Square? I could go on and on about the stagecraft employed by Republicans, so, in all honesty, they need to shut up.

Posted by: purplehawk | August 28, 2008, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

I haven’t gotten a good look at the stage, but I was thinking they may be trying to evoke an image similar to MLK’s giving his “I have a dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Ryan C,
Both Lieberman and Graham serve on the Armed Services committee which is not only the role that in which they were sent (if anyone had bothered to read the statement) but is also the committee that McCain is the ranking member on.
Being that it is an armed conflict, and has dealings with our military ties to the region (i.e NATO plus training) it would also fall under the purview of the Armed Services committee.

Ryan C,
You should maybe try to read a little harder. The part of political committees accepting donations over $5,000 is only relevant IF the AIP was found to be such a committee. That is what obama has been charging. In fact the site you lists AGREES with AIP that it may very well qualify as a QNC. The telling factor is how much of its money did it spend on political activity. So again as long as they spend 50.1% of their money on non political activity it meets the requirements unlike say the Democratic Legal Council.
By the way how abiding to the law are democrats who keep giving millions of federal tax payer money (economic stimulus and housing bills) to ACORN (which is also employed by the Obama campaign) which is once again found to be engaging in election fraud?

Posted by: Zaggs | August 28, 2008, 1:42 pm 1:42 pm

Zaggs,
The site says if everything the group’s lawyer says is true then they may qualify.
So basically you can count on them not qualifying.
I love that someone is thumping their chest about an obviously questionable group.
Again Republicans think the law does not apply to them.

Anyway, basis for that outside of a blog or Obama press release?
Either way, it is moot, because you have not evidence that he did NOT request other envoys. Do you really think the Georgian president is going to specifically request Obama’s selection and reject McCain’s? He is also a Bush friend and ally, right?

How is it a lie? Biden was requested to go to Georgia and Obama stayed out of it. Obama made no announcement. And obviously Biden was well received by their President.
Lieberman and Graham were specifically dispatched and announced by the McCain campaign as a political move. They didn’t announce they were going. McCain did.

Biden was NOT INVITED by Saakashvili. Saakashvili himself said in his august 19th press conference (if I put the link its get deleted, its on the president of georgia’s website) “By the way I just have conversation with John Biden that was sent here by the senator Obama”. Last time I checked sent here by the senator means sent here by the senator, not invited. If Biden had been invited there would be no mention of Obama, yet there it was.

Posted by: Zaggs | August 28, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

Wade,
The Biden invite was reported via the AP wire.
If McCain’s envoys were requested he would have stated so in his announcement.
RW blogs (see hot air)cringed at McCain’s move even as they attempted to spin it.

Ryan C,
I’ll take the word of the president of Georgia over Biden any day of the week (notice how the only mention comes from the campaign?). Especially since no media got confirmation from Georgia on the lie of the invitation.
On top of that it makes no since to invite 1 senator, especially when Rice was already there, had a press conference with SaakaSvili at which they discussed “massive assistance programs for Georgia from the United States”.
Again go the Georgian president’s website, august 19th press conference. Right there in all its glory, Obama sent Biden.

Why does it not make sense to invite the chairman of the foreign relations committee. Someone who has been working with Georgia and their President for years.
I’m not saying Lieberman & Graham were unwelcome.
I’m saying McCain tried to play President. Obama’s campaign said nothing about this trip.

Ryan C,
Nothing was reported by the AP and elsewhere but what Biden said (look at your own quote), in fact, thats not even reporting its quoting. There has never been confirmation by the AP that Biden was invited. The president specifically said Biden was sent by Obama. If he wasn’t there was no reason to mention Obama’s name at all. Yet there it is. The only person who could confirm Biden’s version is Saakashvili, he did not confirm it and said the exact opposite.
Nor did Saakashvili talk well of Biden, he was mentioned one time in regards to being sent by Obama and assitance, thats all.

Posted by: Zaggs | August 28, 2008, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

Zaggs,
Biden claims he was invited. The Georgian President did nothing to dispell that. I have no doubt that Biden and he discussed Obama’s feelings on the matter.
But did the Obama campaign announce it was sending Joe Biden to Georgia or not?
That is the question. And the answer to that is a clear no.

Posted by: Ryan C | August 28, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

Obama campaign is so full of it. Bush had nothing near this in the arena he was in and he WAS THE PRESIDENT AT THE TIME. I know Denzil there loves to play the Prez AND ACT AS IF…with Presidential seals and European speeches (he had to lure the crowd there with the most popular German rock band and other entertainment and beer), but this ain’t a movie and AMERICANS ARE TOO SMART FOR THIS FRAUD. Just because liberal media has to shove this pop celebrity at us doesn’t mean we grown ups want him near our White House!
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN!

Posted by: Debra | August 28, 2008, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm

You have to go to the Rasmussen report page and read the following article: Hillary Can’t Fix What Her Party Broke. This is a little piece from it. I think this article hits it right on about how the alienated Hillary women are feeling and why we are feeling the way we are feeling.
The Democrats clearly have a hooligan problem. It was as though their left-wingers suffered a kind of Karl Rove envy. They wanted to go on the attack, demonize a Clinton and hurl abuse at the Clinton’s friends. Only a year ago, Vanity Fair ran a cover story on how Clinton hatred had infected much of the right wing. The left seems to have grabbed the baton. And it apparently did not dawn on the Obama shock troops that they were offending the very people their man might someday need.
He made his bed now let’em sleep. I hope he loses big time in November! Good Riddance to the Chicago thug Obama!

Posted by: cardinal | August 28, 2008, 4:07 pm 4:07 pm

I say that the columns are intended to evoke those of the Lincoln Memorial, on whose steps Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech 45 years ago today.

Posted by: Jill Nikolaides | August 28, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

Ryan:
Okay, personal attack aside. Not sure where you are getting the fraud thing. I thought this exchange was in good humor…
I didn’t say the columns were “presumptuous.” I said they were “obnoxious,” meaning that I don’t like obvious messages designed to make me “comfortable” with a candidate. To me it would be like McCain walking out with a Ben Franklin impersonator…(“Back when McCain was a Founding Father”…) or Bush’s “Homeland Security”…(can we not call it “National Security” or something less imperial?)
My initial post wasn’t an “argument,” it was my personal take on the backdrop…you can’t make an “argument” against my subjective tastes.
…I think you can argue that neither McCain or Obama were “presumptuous” for allowing or sending political allies to visit Georgia or both were, or one was and the other wasn’t, but that issue is not related to the backdrop designed by Britney Spears’ set designer.
Yes, I criticized the columns, I don’t like them for Obama. I don’t like them for McCain. I don’t like them. I also, subjectively, believe it was a mistake to go that direction…I thought the republicans choosing their convention dates around 9/11 in 2004 and in NY was extraordinarily cheesy…different, yes, but cheesy, maybe more so.
You like the columns/Rose Garden/Lincoln Memorial facade, I don’t. That’s fine, like them all you want…just don’t try to convince me that they are the bee’s knees under pain of being called a fraud.

I just discovered that in my haste to dash off an earlier post, I left out its entire point.
