Edwards’ Mistress Rielle Hunter the Model for Character in Gen-X Lit
This may only be of interest to Gen-Xers or fans of the literary brat pack in the 1990s, but it turns out that a fictitious character based on Rielle Hunter, the former mistress of Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., has been making its way through several novels.
Author Jay McInerney told the New York Post that Alison Poole, the protagonist of his 1988 novel “Story of My Life,” was based on Hunter, whom he dated for a few months in the 1980s back when she was Lisa Druck.
“She’s a nice girl,” McInerney told the Post’s Page Six. “She used to be a real party girl. When she wasn’t out at nightclubs, she was taking acting classes. We dated for only a few months, but in that period, I spent a lot of time with her and her friends, whose behavior intrigued and appalled me to such an extent that I ended up basing a novel on the experience. It was narrated in the first person from the point of view of an ostensibly jaded, sexually voracious 20-year-old who was inspired by Lisa. I certainly thought of Alison Poole as a sympathetic and ultimately endearing character.”
Radar magazine has delved back into the book for ostensibly relevant passages about Poole’s liaisons with men who have “high-powered jobs” and whose “idea of wild is argyle socks,” including “Most of the guys I know have really high-powered jobs and make up for lost time when they’re not in the office. The Berserk After Work Club. I seem to attract them in a big way, all these boys in Paul Stuart suits with six-figure salaries and hellfire on a dimmer switch in their eyes.” Poole also said, “Men. I’ve never met any. They’re all boys.”
New York magazine notes that Poole has also appeared in novels by McInerney’s pal and fellow brat-packer, Bret Easton Ellis, including “American Psycho” and “Glamorama.”

I think the biggest thing from this story… …is that she changed her name…to “Rielle”
yearnings for grandeur.
that is an act of someone looking for fame…not of most documentary filmmakers.

my comment is we all have sinned and come short of the glory of GOD. Everyone is talking, but how many of those people are perfect. Things happed. So I always wondered from the media, whats in their closet. No excuses, but who is the perfect man or woman. thanks.

Indeed, she was a temptress for a weak man, Edwards, who was all about Edwards. That is until he fell from grace, and threw his weight to Obama. What a perfect pair of guys, two peas in a pod. The ego-centric Edwards, and the arrogant Obama.

I am getting tired of people trying to minimize sexual escapades. I do not mind that he lied about the affair. I think no one has the right to expect
information on ones private lifeto be provided by just asking.. That said, It speaks poorly of any man who cannot be true to his marriage vows which incidently are only secondarily to one’s spouse and primarily to God.
I have remained faithful to my vows and am fast approaching the age where temptation may decrease. Until then I still hope to continue to be faithful to God. We are all tempted.

To the judgemental, Edwards is pretty normal. All throughout English, French, and German literature, and more, many rich men had mistresses or affairs. It was just part of the package. This includes some of our Founding fathers. Its pretty normal for a male to still be attracted to the opposite sex and should a beauty and opportunity suddenly appear some will indulge. That doesn’t make them satanic or the devil. I think people are being too hard on Edwards. Its not hypocritical to be a male and do what males do. What matters is how they deal with the people affected by it. A good marriage should barely be affected by a fling. This idea that a fling means sure divorce is pure insanity of a spoiled people with unrealistic expectations. He said he worked it out with his wife and we should respect that. We are not his keeper.

Sounds like it is all HER fault, men who are boys are just to weak to resist.
An affair is merely having your cake and eating it too!

This is Edward’s and his family’s business. We all have our weakness. We espouse famiy values and hold up a morality that we sometimes fall short of. My guess is that most of the judgements above are from Christians who are prohibited from judging others by Jesus. In that they show their shortcomings. If extramarital affairs affected the judgement of leaders, we would have lost WW2 (Ike and FDR). For those trying to make political points, John McCain also had an extramarital affair and left his injured and disable wife for his present one.

“Rielle” Hunter sounds like a total, spoiled, flake. Have fun, John Edwards with your choice. I pity your children and family. Elizabeth Edwards should have continued to practice law instead of taking care of John Edwards’ kids.

What has all this got to do with Edwards as a person capable of leading the country. When was it that the Presidential candidate has to be a holy man ?
Is he not entitled to a private life.
BTW, get your God out of here, please.

Karen you forget Edwards brought in many millions of dollars into the relationship and quite a nice lifestyle and probably wasn’t such a bad guy so she forgave him, maybe loves him, and kept a practical bent, that is keeping the wealth in the family. She did the right thing if he sincerely made amends.

You people are missing the point – Edwards had the gall to run for POTUS KNOWING what he did, and the arrogance to think he could get away with it. You guys are always forgiving when it comes to one of your own, but when it is the other side, talk about being sanctimonious and cavalier! Edwards espoused family values and held up a morality that HE fell short of. We don’t expect our leaders to be saints, but we expect them to tell the truth and earn our respect and trust in running the country. Otherwise, why do we criticize other Country’s leaders! Edwards cites becoming egocentric (I forget the other adjective) as being the causes of his bad judgement. Well, he has a pea-in-the-pod who has those character flaws, so you better be careful who you elect!

I respectfully differ, Bush is a bad apple. However, it looks like the most of the apples on the market are also spoiled as well. Potential Presidents should be subjected to a psychological evaluation with a public release of the results. Then let the candidates spin it away.

Hp Boston, I wouldn’t call a short term relationship trivial like you are implying, but I wouldn’t want people to destroy their long term relationships over something that has been put to bed. Why should a fling or short affair get to destroy a long term marriage. Too many Americans get divorced at the drop of a hat and many end up even more miserable.

Beckie, since you missed it, I was drawing the comparison to show how our political discourse is filled with trivialities. Of course there is no equivalence between betraying your spouse and thus your family, and betraying your oath of office and thus your country. Both are serious, of course, but in a totally different way. The fact that the one that affects an individual family is treated as important while the other is not just shows how shallow our discourse is.

Other blogs are pointing to the creepy Clinton connections on this story especially that David Kendall is a lawyer for the Enquirer and it appears they have leaked stories through the Enquirer in the past. The notion is that Edwards brings the unions into play and the creepy Clintons do not want that.
I think there is a big backfire on this as it reminds those over 29 of the awful Clinton business with creepy Bill lying under oath in the case about exposing himself – in more ways than one. Interesting that creepy Bill is going to speak at the convention and Edwards is not. Edwards did not sell out the unions with NAFTA.

If you looked in the skeleton closets of most of these top tier politicians, you’d find this kind of thing in two-thirds of the cases. But Edwards is way too slick. He made good populist arguments in this election, but he’s political toast now. The most fascinating thing here is the way the media gave him a pass when this story came up during the campaign and then totally ignored it when the National Enquirer nailed it down recently. Fair and objective reporting of the news, not!

Mike: I think it reminds us all of McCains short coming, too. It is really not that similar to the creepy Clinton case in that some one who exposes themselves is in another category. But I think you are right it points to the issue that we have a problem with our politicians. You can take that however you want – as you have read some republican plot into that.

It’s odd how we need to assign blame between two adults who choose to be selfish… “It’s all her fault” (previous post). This needs to be filed under, Buy a Vowell and is not worthy of further debate.
Or justify the unjustifiable. “All Throughout English, French, and German literature, and more, many rich men had mistresses or affairs.”(previous post) Such a grand sweeping statement fails to recognize the loveless marriages and mistresses for whom their station in life was set at birth unless they could sleep with powerful men for the affections they may receive.
The act these two adults made the consious decision to committ was obviously without regard to a woman fighting for her life. Or children marched out on morality parade. Set politics and religion aside this was a dispicable act by a weak man. I only hope I can do better.

Weak, weak, weak. He had gone so far for a weak man. America is after all a land of opportunity.
Gone farther than he should have gone. Talked the talk.
But life was too hard for him. His loss with John Kerry and the constant fatigue of battle wore him down. Elizabeth’s cancer didn’t help either and left him vulnerable and alone. Afraid of the future.
And then love came to town and he decided to catch that train and he
blew everything.
Don’t judge the man. He’s got enough problems.

If you think the media avoiding a story about salacious affairs is bad …then why aren’t you asking them to investigate Mccain’s relationship with Cindy when he left his disfigured wife?
or why are you leaving it there that even though they didn’t follow up with a discredited newspaper like the Enquirer…
why is there not that kind of fervency to unearth where the story of mccain’s affair came from…
I mean the New york times is a lot more legitimate than the Enquirer (and don’t try to spin that one please)
yet you say this shows that the media isn’t investigating Obama? are you kidding
McCain’s timeline does not work out for when his relationship started with the young blonde millionairess that he left his wheelchair, disfigured older wife for? or the stories of his affair with that actress in the 80′s?
please…start making sense…if anyone has not had their personal affairs looked into it is absolutely positively overwhelmingly..
John and Cindy mcCain.
Obama has been under the microscope for 10 months straight…and to say other wise is…
well it’s a lie.
this story hurts John Mccain much more than Barack Obama who has no such history like that of John Mccain
how about John’s finances…or the paperwork on his health or the details of why Nancy reagan didn’t speak with him for years…
the media didn’t focus on this because they were trying to not make this a tabloid election…but if the republicans want a tabloid election bring on the starlet, the whhelchair disfigured ex-wife and the blonde bimbetter drug addicted millionairess new wife… and all the rest…from Budweiser and the windfall inheritence to Keating.

Personal life vs. Political life
Yes, he’s sleazy. Yes, he shouldn’t have a political career after this. But come on. This is a personal issue. Leave it alone. This affair shouldn’t cause Edwards’ political ideologies to die with it. We need others to take up his goals and ideas because, as uncouth as his behavior was, his political ideals are still worth fighting for.

So, Elizabeth Edwards knew about her husband’s sexual affair with Rielle Hunter in 2006 and fully supported his run for the White House ??? Is she nuts?? No wonder the media tried to cover up John Edwards’ affair. Exposing John’s sex romp makes Elizabeth look just as stupid as him. Of course the infidelity would come out for two reasons: Rielle Hunter told all her family and friends, and the National Enquirer has the cold hard cash!
John really blew it from the start. He should have claimed the baby was his from artificial insemination and the Rielle was a paid surrogate. When Rielle refused to give up the child, John wanted to talk to her alone. Elizabeth could have claimed full knowledge.
If Obama didn’t know what John Edwards was doing with his spare time (even though the Enquirer told him) and still had him as a VP candidate, then how is Obama going to figure the Iranians out? The answer: Obama knew.

I wish this had been kept private, but since it’s not I am simply amazed at the ‘so what’ attitude expressed by so many of you. Adultery is immoral and utter mistreatment of a spouse, and if your supposed ‘best friend’ has cancer for crying out loud, how can any of you be alright with Edwards’ act(s)???
“It’s not hypocritical to be a male and do what males do.”
“Clinton did it while in office and it doesn’t make him satan.”
“Why all the focus here and not on Bush…” blah blah blah.
First – Edwards should be as ashamed as Spitzer, and neither should be allowed to legislate again. Lack of moral fiber will infect (both literal and figurative meanings) their thought proceses and we deserve better.
Second – We all need to stop the bitter political diviseness continually expressed in these blogs. Bush did a bad job, though we haven’t had another 911. Obama needs to demonstrate more substance. McCain needs to stop those foolish ads. We need to call them as we see them rather than continually, ad nauseum pushing our agendas!!!
