Hillary’s Homerun

My quick thought is that she nailed it tonight. Given all the drama, all the expectations, we can quibble about how much of the speech was about her, not about Obama. But she made a rational, coherent argument for her supporters to throw their considerable energy behind Barack Obama. Not all of them will, of course. But if tonight’s speech is an indication of what’s to come, you won’t be able to blame Hillary Clinton for that.

We’ll be back tomorrow — and, as always, check out The Note tomorrow morning.

If Obama has such good judgement how in the world could he have picked Joe Biden over Hillary Clinton for the VP
spot
You really have to question if obama is ready to lead.

nobama. Not now, not ever.

Posted by: misstickly | August 26, 2008, 11:31 pm 11:31 pm

Sorry, but this analysis is just bogus. Here is my takeaway:
1. Clinton should be the nominee, as her speech was amazing
2. AT THE VERY LEAST, she should be the VP
3. Obama trashed the Clintons, attempted to destroy Bill’s legacy (which Hillary deftly reminded people of), and race baited – all so he could win no matter the repercussions.
Sorry, but Hillary did a GREAT JOB FOR HERSELF. She did not address the issues of Obama’s readiness.

Posted by: JA | August 26, 2008, 11:32 pm 11:32 pm

Of course we can blame her. If she had given this speech two months ago, she would not have had to give it tonight. Or better yet, if she had behaved unselfishly during the primaries and let the Republicans run their own attacks, maybe she could have celebrated the triumph of America more and mended the fences of the past less.

Posted by: Jenni | August 26, 2008, 11:32 pm 11:32 pm

The failure of the Obama camp to pick Hillary as the VP makes you wonder who is in Obama’s inner circle and to question their judgement.
Caroline Kennedy get that silver spoon out of your mouth and try working for a living.

These idiots on MSBC are out of control. All of a sudden now Keith Oberman is a fan of Hillary Clinton, after months of bashing her this sicko is now swooning over her. Hillary did what she had to do tonight I am proud of her, but my vote is not dictated by her speach it is dictated by me doing my research comparing the records and comparing their past accomplishments and votes period.

I saw Hillary’s speech and thought it was a good speech, but certainly not a great speech. She has given better. United Democrats? Bill Clinton will not be attending Obama’s speech on Thursday…what does that say? I expected more red meat from the Democrats and do not think that they have laid a glove on McCain. Disappointing.

Posted by: Chris Morelli | August 26, 2008, 11:36 pm 11:36 pm

I’m still amazed how could you not pick hillary as the VP, its outragous and disgracefull.
Another case of the democratic elite being out of touch with America. When was the last time a kennedy worked in a factory or waited on tables.

Posted by: al | August 26, 2008, 11:36 pm 11:36 pm

Jenni-you should look in the mirror and blame yourself for voting to nominate an empty suit, you obamabots need to start taking responsibility for your ignorance and for your vote. When he looses, please look in the mirror and the person looking back at you will be the person that is responsible for this debacle.

Posted by: Kim | August 26, 2008, 11:36 pm 11:36 pm

The American people saw what is wrong with the Democratic Party. Hillary gave a tremendous speech and should have been the nominee. Enough of the Democratic idealism (Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry etc. etc.) Hillary would have had my vote in a heartbeat, but this loyal Democrat can not in good conscience vote for Obama. November = Vacation time for me.

Posted by: Rob Miller | August 26, 2008, 11:39 pm 11:39 pm

first off, OBAMA AND HILLARY HATE EACH OTHER. wow. do you guys actually think obama gave hillary a thought about being his v.p. choice?! she talked more about herself in that speech rather than point out to eveyone (especiallyhe stubborn supporters) why obaa should be elected. she covered her ass with that speech and thats it.

Posted by: tim | August 26, 2008, 11:39 pm 11:39 pm

As a proud Hillary supporter, I CANNOT bring myself to vote for a less qualified leader in Barack Obama.

As an Obama supporter throughout the primaries, I must say, I am at this point more proud of Sen. Clinton than at any point during her historic campaign or during her public life. A great applause of gratitude. She was simply fantastic. I do now hope and believe, she will find herself sitting comfortably in a cabinet position — a far greater prize than the Vice Presidency.

If Obama supporters want to fire up the Hillary supporters, trash Hillary’s speech. Especially if they think it wasn’t enough about Obama. She didn’t need to preach to the Obama choir, they already believe he’s the redeemer, but some Hillary supporters don’t. She knows that, and spoke to her supporters. If she would have gotten all gushy about Obama, she wouldn’t have been taken seriously. She made her point for the Democratic Party. The party she believes will bring Americans the answers we need. This election is Obama’s to lose. If he does, when he does, it’s his fault.

michael…
first off, who “asked” her to do it? for the good of the party, shouldnt she have just done it and not have been asked? no expectations? no criteria to live up to? im not sure thats a good thing, and secondly, just because she said his name 10 times dosnt mean much.. lol i mean, what are all the other speakers who speak there talking about? barack obama and how he can change “the world”… why should her speech be any different? after all, she is just another “speaker” now.. she was very vague, and that speech did nothing to encourage those who were on the fence about obama, to go and vote for him. color it anyway you want it, it just wasnt a grounbreaking speech. it wasnt a bad one either, im just saying, its typical for the left to go out now and praise her and act like it was a historical speech. i feel embarrased just reading and hearing some people thoughts on it.. lol

I think she is the one that feels outshone by Hillary and not Barack hence the reason she did not want Hillary to play any part in Barack administration.

Women Put in Their Place, Again ?
On Aug. 26, 2008, the 88th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving Women the right to vote, Hillary Rodham Clinton will address America to explain why she and the rest of the women in America have allowed themselves to be put back in their place as third class citizens behind White men and now Black men. It is so disappointing to see women rolling over on their backs and doing as they were told, as if their Foremothers had not spent the past few thousand years suffering and struggling to be acknowledged as equals instead of the property of men ,to be used and abused and told what to do and think and say. What a shame it is that on the Anniversary of one of Women’s` greatest achievements Hillary Clinton will be personally giving up all that has been gained and admitting defeat once again. How sad that women have allowed themselves to be put back in their place and told what to do by Obama, Howard Dean and the DNC, and the media, then tricked into using such an important anniversary to admit defeat and pledge their allegiance to their new Master. It is such a disgrace to see the women of today selling out their Foremothers and their achievements so easily just to put another Male democrat in the White House, without realizing that when “United” they actually hold enough power to control this election and put a woman in the White House instead of another man. The women of today have rolled over so easily when they were told to, that I find it hard to understand if it was because they really enjoy being third class citizens behind the white man and now the Black man, or were they just not smart enough or brave enough to do as there foremothers before them and band together and stand up for themselves and what is rightfully theirs. The women of today have stood by and allowed the men of their party to push aside Hillary Clinton to make room for their chosen one, another man .How pathetic you have become, allowing the men of the DNC to put you back in your place on such an important night. I guess Hillary has been ordered to use that night to try to convince you that you should be happy and celebrating in the knowledge that you are lucky that your foremothers did all of the hard work so you can stand by and watch it ripped from a woman`s grasp at the last minute, but it is okay” because it was just not your time but it will be someday soon if you stand aside and let another Man have it for the next four to eight years”. You should be happy that they even allow you the right to vote, instead of complaining about how you were tricked out of your rights and told who you can vote for, as long as it is not a woman. ” You have come a long way baby”, then stepped aside as you were told to do so all of the men can get back in the front of the line, leaving you in the back of the line where you belong. Shame on you for rolling over once again! Regardless of Political Party or Race , you all lose.

Margaret Talev reports on Obama watching clinton’s speech -
“Clinton began speaking and when she said she was “a proud suporter of Barack Obama” he smiled and softly shouted “yay” then straightened his face again. He clapped when she said “no way, no how, no McCain.”
Obama also smiled and laughed widely when she talked about her sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits. He noded solemnly as she explained why she is supporting Obama and sat silent when she asked her supporters whether the were just in it “for me” or for various needy groups in America. He nodded and clapped when she talked of him signing expanded health care and when she praised Michelle Obama. He nodded and said “Yeah” as she criticized McCain and as her speech neared the end he leaned increasingly closer to the TV set.”
We’re just glad he didn’t start hugging the TV set.

tim,
Obama has to hit that economic issue HARD. He has to have that populist message Hillary had towards the ending of the primary and quite frankly I haven’t seen that from him. I know his policies and I agree with them, but Obama needs to start fighting for these votes.
I give credit to the Obama camp on their ground game. That’s what I believe will help them win the election just as Bush won in 2004.
Humor, that’s another thing. Start hitting McCain in a sarcastic tone; Mockery. You can show clips of McCain calling himself a Maverick and then flip-flopping on EVERY major issue. The “7″ homes. Keep hammering away at that comment. He’s gaffe on Sunni and and Shiites. He’s gaffe on a border between Iraq and Pakistan. I thought national security and foreign policy was his strong suit. Humor.
Lets say McCain choses Romney as his VP. Mock Romney as being just another Bush. Bush = CEO, Governor, Harvard Grad etc. Who does that sound like? Romney. A big corporate guy worth $202 million. No wonder he and McCains economic policies are beneficial to the top 5%. Come up with something original.
I believe Obama will win. But if he’s able to get his message out there quicker he wins by a much larger margin.

Kenneth Vogel reports from Denver..
Biden struggles to tame hyperbole – “During his first full day of solo campaigning, newly minted Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden showed some of the flashes of the hyperbole, exaggerations and quips that Republicans are hoping to use to paint him as a loose cannon.
In three sets of unscripted and sometimes rambling remarks Tuesday, Biden thanked God that one of his audiences was overwhelmingly female, called Michelle Obama’s convention speech “the most remarkable speech I have heard in my life” and predicted it would propel him and running mate Barack Obama to victory in the fall.
He also said he didn’t care about the press, that Obama has a “sixth sense” and Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner has “the most incredible story in American politics,” that he and Barack Obama had “the most incredible opportunity … since Franklin Roosevelt.” And he choked up a handful of times, once wiping away tears after proclaiming that having a chance to be vice president pales in comparison to representing Delaware in the Senate.”

With all of this Ayers stuff hitting the fan …. I am really beginning to think the Democrats have chosen the wrong canidate.
The Annenberg Papers were finally released today for review (after Obama tried to have them keep hidden). First glance looks like Obama was more than “just a neighbor” of Ayers.
Obama “Mr. Hope and Change” is applying Chicago-style mafia tactics to intimidate those who want to alert the nation to Obama’s troubling ties to, and longtime relationship with, the unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist. Obama’s lawyers and minions are playing hardball with TV stations that have dared to air the ad.
Obama general counsel Bob Bauer today sent a second, sharper letter to the Justice Department, directly attacking the Dallas billionaire funding a harsh attack ad, Harold Simmons.
Just make you wonder what Obama is hiding. Wish he had been vetted better prior to th Primaries.

Well this will do more to enforce that Obama was really meant to be a rock star.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s big speech on Thursday night will be delivered from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple.
The stage, similar to structures used for rock concerts, has been set up at the 50-yard-line, the midpoint of Invesco Field, the stadium where the Denver Broncos’ National Football League team plays.
Some 80,000 supporters will see Obama appear from between plywood columns painted off-white, reminiscent of Washington’s Capitol building or even the White House, to accept the party’s nomination for president.

Good speech Hillary. I’m glad you are not sailing the sinking ship which everyone knows beforehand.

I can’t believe any Hillary supporter would even think about voting for McCain – they obviously don’t care about women’s rights, affordable health care, our nation’s energy problems, the economy, education, and on and on and on – How can you vote for McCain when he is going to help the rich (people who make more than $5 Million a year), the big oil companies, etc. McCain is too quick to want to strike back (Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran). If you really care about the issues facing our country, you wouldn’t even think of voting for McCain. McCain & the Republicans are just trying to stir the pot & keep the Hillary supporters upset – that is one of the ways they are trying to undermine the Democrats & Obama.
I wouldn’t want to jeopardize the future of our country, my children & grandchildren. We really cannot afford 4 more years of Bush/McCain policy.

The truth is Obama and his scum supporters will say your racist if you vote for McCain just like they said Bill Clinton is Racist

Posted by: gracie | August 27, 2008, 3:41 am 3:41 am

Hillary wasn’t “pushed” aside. She was out maneuvered by a politician with a better-run campaign. She didn’t want to be VP. It will be interesting to see where she ends up after the election and Obama is in the Oval Office.

Posted by: Joel | August 27, 2008, 4:02 am 4:02 am

I love Hillary but there are just too many question marks over Obama for me to ever vote for him. Sorry, I’ll hold my nose and vote McCain & hopefully see Hillary in 2012.

Posted by: Mark | August 27, 2008, 4:17 am 4:17 am

I’ve been reading the comments, and the most common reaction I’ve observed is that Obama and/or the Democratic Party made a fatal mistake in either a) not making Hillary the nominee or b) not choosing her for the veep spot. However, there’s a fundamental fact you’re missing. The Republicans hate, hate, HATE Hillary Clinton!! They think she’s Beelzebub! Don’t forget, Rush Limbaugh urged his listeners to change parties for a day (breaking election laws in several states, by the way) to vote for Hillary in the primaries. The Republicans WANTED to run against Hillary! Their hatred of her would have galvanized their base far better that ANY Republican candidate, especially McCain, ever could. Hillary would be facing just as difficult a road, if not more so, as Obama is now in a dead heat with McCain in spite of the Republican’s lukewarm support. In my opinion, Obama at least has a shot if the party unites behind him; Hillary would lose.
And as for you people who plan to vote for McCain because Hillary didn’t win, I only have this to say. To vote for a candidate that you KNOW will run this country further and deeper into the ground in a misguided effort to make a future Hillary candidacy more successful is irresponsibility on a level I didn’t know was possible. If you do this, you will be spitting on her and everything she’s ever worked and stood for.

Posted by: Traci | August 27, 2008, 4:29 am 4:29 am

A vote for McCain would be a slap in Hillary’s face. Remember McCain’s “joke” about Chelsea: “The reason Chelsea is so ugly is that her father is Janet Reno.”
Do you really think that Hillary would want you to vote for a “friend” who could tell a joke like that?
Do you really think that Hillary wants all the principles she has fought for since entering politics to be tossed out the window?
How do you think she would be treated by a Republican administration under John McCain?
As Ann Landers would have said, it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee.

I kept thinking.. Obama could have had her as a VP.. there is no stronger attack dog. What a wimp he is. I love HIllary, and I took her speech to heart, but ultimately, its up to Obama to sell me.

Posted by: a reader in georgia | August 27, 2008, 6:57 am 6:57 am

Hillary was fabulous and she would have made a great President. The Democrats MISSED the opportunity to nominate a winner. Instead they selected a inexperienced man, and a VP that received only 9 thousand votes from the public. The Democrats let this woman who received 18 million votes and last night probably 50 million people that felt as I do the Democrats failed their party and the country.
So Hillary did what the party “perceived” was the right thing. I’m a Republican but I would have voted for Hillary and it would have been a BIG change for America. Hillary would have led America into a new era of caring for each other, uniting us together and delivering on her word. Barack Obama is doomed to fail because he promised everything to everyone to just get elected. The very first speech of the convention was how strong Democrats are on crime…..and yet, the state and cities from which Barack Obama comes from have the largest crime in the nation. He did nothing. He will do nothing.

I thought that Michelle Obama did not seem very enthusiasitc; if she showed some enthusiasm or respect for Hillary, it was…. bogus. You could see how emotional Bill was! What do you guys think? I still believe that secretly she hates Hillary.

The best thing after Obama loses this election is we never have to hear about the Kennedy’s ever again. God is Ted Kennedy gross looking

Posted by: gracie | August 27, 2008, 7:16 am 7:16 am

WOW, Hillary is truly amazing!
If Obama was not grossly under-qualified then that speech would have convinced me to vote for him. If a different Democrat had won (Biden, Clinton) I would trust them to run the country and vote for them in December.
I am just shocked that Obama didn’t even vet her for the VP. She is a brilliant woman!

AlbertMike…
Hillary did NOT want to be vetted for VP, as that would have required Obama’s lawyers to check into Bill’s finances.
A vote for McCain is a vote for another 4 years of Bush’s policies. It’s time for a change.

Jamie Allman on 97.1 in St. Louis is at the convention. He reports that on camera the Dems all claim solidarity, but off the record, people are saying they realize they have the wrong candidate. They know some Hillary supporters will vote McCain. Tension is high in the hall, and everyone is trying to put a good face on a divided party. Jamie Allman is with Fox News, so you can take it with a grain of salt. However, judging from my own family and friends and co-workers, I would say the party is definitely divided. When extended family members in their 70s say they’ll sit out the election or vote McCain, I know there’s trouble in paradise.

Watched CBS and loved how the MSM spins the “we’re united” crap. We’re not. The Dems know they’ve made a mistake, just won’t admit it. Michelle Obama looked like she could spit nails when Hillary was talking. Hillary looked good, said all the right things. Nobody in their right minds belives she really meant a word of it.

Posted by: Carrie | August 27, 2008, 8:14 am 8:14 am

Hillary did a great job!!! Best speech ever- It’s up to Obama now- he’s the nominee and its up to him to clarify his message and talk directly to the voters to make his case.
Obama made a big mistake not picking Hillary as VP- looks like his ego got in the way. He must sell his plan for this country- A SPECIFIC AGENDA,NOT A SPEECH. He needs to visit PA, OH,FL,NV, ETC and talk to voters himself- cant keep sending Hillary or even Biden out there for him. He wants the job- he needs to face this challenge like a leader and quit sending Clinton and Biden now out for him.
If he loses he nor his supporters can blame Clinton. Obama is the nominee and it’s up to him to win!

Posted by: Angela | August 27, 2008, 8:18 am 8:18 am

With or without Hillary, Obama is headed for defeat. The liberal wing of the party may not care that he spent 20 years in a racist, anti-Semitic, un-American church, but there are plenty of Democrats who do. COUNTRY OVER PARTY.

Posted by: Reluctant McCain Dem | August 27, 2008, 8:18 am 8:18 am

Too many of you people have allowed your Hillary hero worship to overcome your common sense and common purpose. I could sit here and list dozens of reasons why Hillary lost and why Obama didn’t want her on his ticket, but they’ve all been said before.
If Obama should lose, Hillary will be blamed, whether that is fair or not. She will not have a prayer in 2012. The Republican platform is one of fear, division, and protection of wealth. John McCain, through his own words and actions, has used, belittled and insulted women for years.
All of you planning to vote for McCain out of anger and spite, will vote against your own self interests and those of every hard working American family. If you can’t see that, if you can’t understand that, then you are to be pitied.

to “fob” and all you GOP impersonators you should be mad about last night. It was a bad night for the GOP. Hillary enthusiastically endorsed Obama. I dont gey your logic Mcain 08/Hillary 12? You assume too much. What if gog forbid, Obama wins? There goes your plan. Also what if Mcainn wins and the economy does well we are at peace and we see less than 3 dollars gallon gas. No way Mcain loses re-election. So if anything its more like this Obama or Mcain 08 and 2012 Clinton 2016.. In 2016 she will be 67 years of age and I guarentee she has my vote and Obamas vote as well.

I am a Republican so I don’t have a dog in this fight. However, I think the Democratic super delegates really did make a mistake choosing Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. She may have run a lousy campaign, but she would make a far better president. I wouldn’t vote for either of the two, but if there has to be a Democrat in the White House (and I’m praying there won’t be), Clinton would be the better choice. As an outsider, my take is this: Clinton is a better man than Obama or Edwards, and that’s why there is resistance to her. She’s stronger and smarter than 99% of the men on this planet, and some men (including Republicans) can’t deal with it. If her politics were different, I’d vote for her in a minute.

Posted by: Carole, Mississippi | August 27, 2008, 9:16 am 9:16 am

How hypocritical can she get. She and her sisters saved women from harrassment. What for? So she could stand by her husband and prosper financially and politically from him while he sexually harrassed every pretty women that came within a mile of him.
This speech was self serving and denoted the opening of the 2012 primary campaign after Obama loses this election, as she fervently hopes he will.

Posted by: Czkeptic | August 27, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am

The writing was on the wall for Clinton when she failed to get the large delegate advantage she needed out of Texas. As every talking head pointed out (correctly, for once), she had no mathematical probability of closing Obama’s huge lead after that point, even if the rest of the states fell her way. She then had a choice of gracefully bowing out and angling for a VP slot, or continuing to fight. She chose to fight, and went on record questioning Obama’s ability to lead over and over. To imagine she had any chance of being on the ticket after the things she said about Obama is utterly delusional. It was Hillary’s own decisionmaking which kept her off the ticket. Obama’s judgment is sound — he absolutely cannot have a running mate who has said repeatedly that he lacks the experience to be president.

As a democrat, what I don’t understand about Hillary-supporters-turned-McCain-supporters is WHY did you support Hillary in the first place if you can now support McCain? Hillary supports democratic ideals while McCain supports republican ideals….so why would your personal ideals change just because your fave candidate didn’t get the nod? During the primaries I was torn between Hillary and Barack; however, I still know which party’s ideals I support!!! This isn’t American Idol here – it’s our lives!

I was ALMOST convinced to hold my nose and vote for Obama for the good of the party, until he pulled his little “VP announcment at 3 am” stunt. That did it for me. This man has the maturity of a ninth grader. He isn’t fit to be a Senator, much less a President. HILLARY CLINTON HAS SHOWN MORE CLASS IN HER DEFEAT THAN OBAMA HAS SHOWN IN HIS SUCCESS.

Gang
someone
wrote this morning,
” Obama has done absolutely nothing so far to earn my vote. The threat of a conservative Supreme Court pick is not enough to sway me. A Democratic congress can block any bad pick.”
Does it matter that his arguments have been almost synonymous with Hillary’s compared to Mccain….
or that he ran a campaign that, for someone everyone accuses of not having leadership and experience enough…was better organized, managed and facilitated… heads and tails above ANY of the other candidates?
So why exactly were you voting for Clinton…and not Obama?
How about education?
or the littany of issues for women (not little issues big issues like violence against women and equal pay) that Mccain was against and Obama and Biden for.
How about healthcare…
…where Mccain’s plan is the same as Bush?
How about the fact that Mccain did not learn ANY lessons from Iraq…and before you argue…
There is no political settlement there …the surge did not achieve the goal because the goal WAS political settlement so we could leave.
Not violence settlement…that was always a given…with that many troops on the ground.
or
Social security? same as Bush
Medicare? same as bush
Taxes? same as Bush
Foreign policy same as Bush
Economy same as Bush
the Constitution’s standing in our government…same as Bush.
So, if you want to say you are going to vote for McCain because the supreme court does not matter that much to you and congress will take care of it…
you are not paying attention.

Democrats have the wrong nominee and it is quite clear now.Sen Clinton has always been gracious, tough and has connected with the people for many years .Mc cain is not more of the same.He actually has a record on bipartisanship ,of reaching out,of putting his country first and I have no doubt he will do the same for our economy and security when he is our president. It comes from moral convictions and experience.Republicans made the right choice in a bad political climate for them and democrats the worst choice possible in a year they should be sweeping elections.
Meanwhile ,the messiah is getting his columned podium ready for a celebrity studded finale on thursday!

It looks like a lot of McCain bonus points are being earned today by fake Democrats. As Hillary said. it’s not about me and if anyone has any real concern for their family and country they will follow her in voting for Obama. McCain winning means at least 12 years of failed Republican policies.
