Jimmy Carter Says McCain ‘Milking’ POW History

Former President Jimmy Carter tells USA Today that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has been "milking every possible drop of advantage" from his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. "John McCain was able to weave in his experience in a Vietnam prison camp, no matter what the question was," Carter told the paper. "It’s much better than talking about how he’s changed his total character between being a senator, a kind of a maverick … and his acquiescence in the last few months with every kind of lobbyist pressure that the right wing Republicans have presented."

Isn’t Carter that dude who was perhaps the worst post-war President? Yeah, that’s him.

Carter is the “dude” that tried to wean us off big oil years ago. Too bad we were too stupid to listen to him.

Posted by: Thomas | August 29, 2008, 7:36 am 7:36 am

It is quite interesting to know that John McCain is lamenting about his experience and his days as prisoner of war but this fact could not even considered in the past years when he ran for presidency and George Bush got the better of him. Why lament about it now after eight years. What has changed from them except the fact McCain supported the President in his mistakes.

Carter is right! McCain needs to give it a rest. It takes more than being a prisoner of war to have what it takes to run the country…and he doesn’t have it

Posted by: Jon | August 29, 2008, 7:39 am 7:39 am

Absolutely, he has been milking his capture.
POW does not equal “hero”. It means he was shot down and captured. That’s it. Nothing “heroic” about John McCain. What did he do that was heroic? NOTHING.
Graduating in the bottom 1% of your class does not make one a good military stratigist or foreign policy expert. Neither does spending years in a POW camp. Who cares if had a uniform on while he was barely squeeking through. His admiral father got him where he was in the first place.
Yes, McCain was in the military. So what? So are hundreds of thousands of others who are NOT QUALIFIED to lead lead this country!
(And JA, Carter had a REPUBLICAN congress that blocked everything he tried to do. If they had actually listened to him, we would not be in the energy crisis that we have now. He had more foresight than McCain ever will. But you’re probably not old enough to have any real sense of history)

Maybe Barack Obama should stop mentioning he’s black. Kind of like in his speech last night where he said he knows he’s not the conventional type of candidate. We get the idea Barack, you’re half black. GIVE IT A REST. I’m not voting for a concept.

and by the way. Carter was too decent of a human being to be in the White House. McCain won’t have that problem and Bush certainly doesn’t have that problem.

I hate to agree with Carter but he’s right. It’s like John McCain is afraid to answer any real questions because he’ll say something that the Rovians pulling his puppet strings won’t like. He just throws out his canned answer “you know, my friend, I was a POW for 5 1/2 years and didn’t have _________.” I think he’s cheapening his heroism by doing that and it’s making him seem like less of a hero and much more of a politician. There’s absolutely no sign of the maverick anywhere.

Rodney JM was often put in solitary confinement and beaten repeatedly while he was in prison. The food was barely edible. He was denied medical treatment. He was threatened with being killed on numerous occaisions. After months if not years of this treatment he was given an opportunity to go home and leave his comrads behind. He decided to stay with his men.
How many would have made the same choice? Would you? What do you think BHO would have chosen?
Many of the prisoners who knew him said he was an inspiration to them all.
In my mind this was a very heroic choice he made. When the chips are down he came through.
When the chips are down, BHO leaves.

Posted by: JB in St. Louis | August 29, 2008, 8:18 am 8:18 am

JA I think you are confusing Presidents. Bush is the one you are thinking about! Carter was the guy who consistently fought ot bring peace to the middle east, tried to do something about the oil crisis, but was stopped by a GOP controlled Senate, and has constantly spoken out for world peace since leaving office.

What are JM’s accomplishments? On several occaisions JM worked with Dems to propose solutions to some of our toughest problems. What to do with illegal immigrants, the congressional deadlock over the picking of Supreme Court justices and campaign financing reform come to mind quickly. He did not stick with Rep beliefs but compromised with Dems.
BHO often says he will work with Rep’s but I haven’t found any examples where he compromised any of his or his party’s beliefs. BHO talks but he doesn’t follow through.

John McCain is reciting personal history. Compared to Obama’s
milking of his through his self-congratulatory pop-books, McCain’s is real, gritty, and abides with him always in part due to the physical pain he feels from it every day of his life. His experience was life-changing, something more than simply having been a druggie. Jimmy Carter has more than milked his own piety for all it’s worth. His rewards are here on earth.

Are you old enough to remember or did you ever read about the Carter administration?
He brought about 20% interest rates and unemployment over 10%!
Carter’s only solution for people was to put on a sweater and sit in front of the fireplace when heating costs rose higher than people could afford.
He set in motion our nuclear power plants would NOT recycle our fuel rods as most countries do but to bury them instead and create new ones.
He sat on his hands when US diplomats and our embassy was taken hostage.
Carter was a well meaning person who talked of hope and change but failed completely to live up to his promises.

Rodney More people are employed today than at any time in US history. Your ten million jobs lost is just Dem rhetoric. If we actually had lost 10 million jobs wouldn’t the unemployment rate be higher than 10%.
Yes housing is a mess, but we still have more people who own homes today than when Clinton left office.
Typical Dem logic is when oil companies make $0.20 per gallon they will drop the price of gas by $0.70 per gallon just because the MESSIAH BHO has arrived!

Rodney, What is the unemployment rate, 5-6%? Doesn’t that mean 94% of the people are employed? Don’t you know 10 million would mean an unemployment rate of over 10%?
Some jobs are lost and some are gained. Though we have had bumps up and down, the net is one of the best employment rates this country has ever seen.
Assuming you ARE a Viet vet, do you remember what the employment rate was then? In case you forgot, it was higher.

So this is what America has come to? The man spent 5 1/2 yrs as a POW facing isolation/torture/et al, definitely a life changing period, and a significant part of why he is the person he is and why he makes the decisions he makes. But to reference it is “milking it”. … I thought no one could get lower than the Swiftboaters, but now I see there’s still room at the bootom.
Current military members take note – when people say “support our troops” they mean “until we get tired of hearing about you”.

Posted by: DG | August 29, 2008, 9:40 am 9:40 am

As during his Presidency, Jimmy Carter is still making bad judgments and worse statements.
How does Jimmy Carter garner the right to judge the experiences of any POW?
From his own, personal experiences?
If you all remember, Jimmy Carter’s blunders resulted in private U.S. citizens being made into POW’s by Iran.
Then, he blundered in his decisions to try to correct his mistakes.
Making such a ludicrous statement is simply another in a long line of Carter blunders.
Carter is probabaly a good man, just not very smart or discerning in his actions.

Carter is not dishonoring McCain’s service or his 51/2 years as a POW by pointing to the fact that McCain uses his POW status as a crutch to avoid answering policy questions.
When McCain, for example, is asked what his economic plan is, I want him to explain what his economic plan is, not tell us that he was a POW.
In fact, it was McCain himself who said early on that he would not play the POW card in the campaign, but he seems to have forgotten that promise.

those who say that Jimmy Carter had a failed presidency are quite wrong, but that’s beside the point.
The point is that Carter’s presidency has no bearing on what he is saying about John McCain s continually relying on his POW years to avoid answering tough questions or as a tool to refute honest criticism.

To set the record straight for all you blind-eyed Republicans who only watch Fox News and believe anything Karl Rove tells you…
The absolute worst post-war president is *TADAAAA*…..George W. Bush!
Lowest approval rating: 19%. Jimmy Carter is fourth lowest, he’s preceded by Harry Truman (2nd place, 1952) and Richard Nixon (3rd place).
So that’s one.
Second, it’s FUN to watch the Democrats take a page from the Republican Attack text book! I’d like more of it

Alaska’s Governor now facing ethics-related probe
Submitted by crew on 24 July 2008 – 9:10am. Alaska Sarah Palin
It’s never a dull moment in Alaska. You may recall that all three members of Alaska’s Congressional Delegation, Senator Ted Stevens, Senator Lisa Murkowski and Rep. Don Young, made CREW’s list of the most corrupt members of Congress, Beyond DeLay.
Now, the relatively new Governor, Sarah Palin, is in hot water and may be facing a legislative investigation. Via the ever informative Anchorage Daily News:
Alaska Senate leaders want an investigation of whether Gov. Sarah Palin pressured and then fired the public safety commissioner because he wouldn’t get rid of a state trooper who had gone through a bitter divorce with Palin’s sister.

Truth is We are sitting at the bottom of the ocean right now. I used to be republican. After the last 8 years I would rather have a bowling ball in the white house . The republican party has stooped to its lowest point ever Karl pig face Rove and Cheyne and Bush have done things that are beyond belief. 4,000 plus americans dead. 30,000 americans maimed and wounded. They talk about God and being christian etc. They are using religeon and any other means to con people. They all have millions invested in Oil. Wake up America. Truth is we could see the truth about McCain in 2004 if we opened our eyes. When push came to shove the republican party tore McCain to shreds. They spanked him and put him in his room. The fact that he is running now only proves to me and anyone with average or above IQ that They let him out of his room ,and he better do what he is told. No thanks, I will vote for Obama. McCain has no shame when it comes to exploiting his POW background. There is no question he can be asked that he does not mention his POW status. What offends me, as a veteran myself (1970-72) is McCain’s abysmal record when it comes to military and veteran issues. he postures himself as a supporter of the troops and veterans, and yet he votes against issues over and over again. The Disabled American Veterans gave him a 20% rating on veterans legislation. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave him a letter grade of D. He is a hypocrite. He should be ashamed of himself.

Jimmy Carter was 18 in 1942. He did not enlist, instead he wrangled his way into the Naval Academy until he graduated in 1946. In 1953, in the middle of the Korean conflict he resigned from the Navy. I do not see how he is qualified to judge John Mccain who placed himself in harms way in service of his country and paid a dear price for it.

markymark and “Carter is right!”:
Carter had a Republican congress blocking his efforts to get things done? Really? Did you even bother to look to see if that was true before you decided to say it? Or did you find the truth and decide to tell an untruth instead? Did you just assume that you can do what the Left has done for years–repeat untruths until they become accepted, and rely on others not to waste time and energy checking the facts?
The fact of the matter: The Democrats won both houses of Congress in 1954, and held them both until the Republicans captured a majority in the Senate and held on to that.
Not surprisingly, the GOP’s first majority in nearly thirty years came in the elections that ended the Carter presidency; the electorate was just that impressed with Carter that they tossed his whole party out.
