Jindal Contrasts McCain/Obama Energy Proposals
ABC News’ Kate McCarthy Reports: In his first appearance on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos", Gov. Bobby Jindal, R- La. said the recent fighting between Russia and Georgia is another reason why the United States needs Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., as its next President.
"I think this is another example, during these uncertain times, where we need experienced leadership," Jindal told ABC News’ Jake Tapper. "We need someone like Senator McCain who will take a stronger view, a more experienced view when it comes to international security and protecting America’s interest."
"You know, Senator Obama condemned the violence and that’s a good thing. But we need to go beyond condemning the violence and actually offering solutions," Jindal said.
The Louisiana Governor also criticized Obama’s energy plan. He said McCain has a comprehensive approach to solving America’s energy problems while Obama "wants us to inflate our tires."
But Jindal acknowledged that he differs with the presumptive Republican nominee on certain energy policies. The two were on opposite sides of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Jindal supported the bill as a Congressman. McCain voted against it saying it was "full of goodies and breaks for the oil companies."
Jindal defended his vote, citing the money designated to restore and protect Louisiana’s coast.
"As a Congressman from Louisiana we had several good reasons to support that bill. Both Democrat and Republican members did," Jindal said. "There were many provisions of that bill that were important for Louisiana, absolutely defendable, especially the money for coastal restoration."
Jindal also admitted that he and McCain "disagree on that one small issue" of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Jindal is considered to be a potential running mate for McCain. However, recently rumors have swirled that Jindal will deliver the keynote address at the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn., indicating he would not be McCain’s choice for VP.
Louisiana Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that the McCain campaign has reached out to Jindal’s office about a "prominent speaking role" at the convention.
In an interview with New Orleans radio station WRNO, Jindal said the McCain campaign has not asked him to speak "at this time."
"If they think it’s helpful for me to speak, I’ll speak. If they think it’s not helpful for me to speak, I won’t speak," Jindal said.

I watched this, they also had Bill richardson on, he looked so uncomfortable when giving his answers and it was kind of scary cause I think almost every sentence he spoke started out with senator obama such and such. Jindal looked comfortable I think he was very knowledgeable and was able to present his own ideas and told where he differed with McCain but why he still supports him. Bill Richardson just said well senator obama yadda yadda yadda didnt have the guts to offer any differences he had with Obama.

Jindal has it right. Dems – alternates which will take years to develop, which is OK, but WE ARE IN CRISES NOW AND NEED SHORT TERM SOLUTIONS… NOW!! THAT MEANS BUILDING REFINERIES AND DRILLING NOW. Price HAS and WILL DROP as soon as we stop fooling around and take a serious attitude toward increasing our domestic oil supply. If Israel hits Iran this fall with Pelosi, Reed and Obama still talking about air in tires and windmills are going to look PRETTY STUPID!!

Jindal is smart, I mean its great that Bill Richardson has decided to help Hillary with her debt(err her husband gave him a job) but I don’t think he’s doing any good as surrogate.

Meanwhile, the roundtable crew was declaring Evan Bayh as the veepstakes winner. Evan Bayh has never lifted a finger to help my family, unlike Hillary Clinton. To select Evan Bayh, an undistinguished Senator, just because he’s related to Birch Bayh, is a slap in Hillary’s face.

What is McCain saying in Las Vegas about the Russia – Georgia conflict? Probably hoping they don’t do to Atlanta what Sherman did.
Jindal never said what McCain would do and I assume it is the same as Bush is doing now — nothing.
The only thing I like about McCain’s energy thoughts is more use of nuclear power. Drilling won’t provide the US more oil, it will provide the world with a little more oil. Make no mistake, any new oil on US territory goes to the world market at world prices. The only people to have a guaranteed benefit are the oil companies who get to sell relatively cheap oil at world prices.

It’s as if Americans wish for the days of the Cold War.
Why seek to encircle a NUCLEAR-ARMED Russia?
Has the foolish foreign policy of a bungling bush has relevance here?
Has Americans’ un-alertness in electing and re-electing an incompetent as their leader relevance here?
Has the UNPROVOKED invasion of Iraq resonating here?
Has the mindless support for an independent MUSLIM Kosovo has resonance here?
Has the reckless attempt to encircle Russia with NATO relevance here?
YES! YES! YES! YES!
Russia is marching to Tbilisi to arrest the Georgian criminals!
For smashing up Ossetia, Georgian government should be replaced and Shaakhasvilli turned over to the Ossetian authorities to answer for his blatant crimes!
Hopefully Poland and the Czech Republic will learn a clear lesson to not follow the delusions and dictates of a bungling bush, who ALSO led America towards the abyss on many front; economic, foreign policy, etc.

Jindal’s pre-2001 writings include several articles in the New Oxford Review, one of which dealt with the subject of exorcism. In that 1994 article, Jindal described witnessing a friend seemingly being possessed by a demon and participating in an exorcism to remove the demon.

Republican News Bulletin: Proper inflation of energy tires does not constitute an energy policy.
What a hoot! No kidding it doesn’t. This is just the latest in the series of Republican distortions.
First, proper tire inflation was mocked as some kind of stupid idea. Then, when it became clear that people weren’t drinking that kool-ade, it became the basis of an energy policy.
Well, that is a bunch of garbage, too.
What it represents, though, does constitute a responsible energy policy. That being increased reliance on and investment in conservation and increased efficiencies. Combined with development of cleaner/greener alternative sources of energy such as wind, solar, and sustainable biofuels (as opposed to corn-based ethanol). Also, combined with drilling and a use it or lose it approach to leasing out areas for drilling.

Where do you get your facts Aston, your asss. Obama’s statement was that if everyone in American kept their cars tuned up and tires properly inflated, we would save just as much as we could gain from increased offshore drilling. You neo-cons want to make that some kind of joke, but every state and federal agency has said the same thing. Even McBush came to that statement after someone corrected him, as usual. But here you are still trying ti make it an issue.

Aston, The price of gas won’t be falling significantly. It would take over 5 years at minimum before new domestic drilling would increase the supply of gas and its impact would be limited. To think that there are measures to take to significantly reduce the price of gas for any long duration of time is magical thinking. In the meantime, the supply of fossil fuels can be conserved through common sense measures, which can help to keep the prices from raising. Even the airlines are advocating individual conservation practices.

do you realize that all John Mccain’s aggressive language and his push to invade other countries (for whatever reason) has left us pretty much incapable of calling for any country to back out of aggression tactics “in the name of their own sovereignty”
do you realize that mcCain has Randy Scheunneman …a lobbyist for Georgia as his main foreign policy guy…and if you understood the situation you would know that the President of Georgia…partly because of kissing up to people like Bush and Mccain felt he has the ba!!s (at least standing behind him in red white and blue) to play a psycholgical game of chicken with the whack job that’s running Russia?
so the question you should be asking is…is John mccain stupid enough to keep playing Mr. Bravado and threatening military force and putting us in a situation that has left us hobbled to deal with a growing Russian threat to stability in the rest of the area?
People need to read more.

you all need to realize the reasons why we are hobbled to deal with this situation…
Bush and McCain’s foreign policy stance.
…and it does not help when Mccain’s lead foreign policy advisor was the main lobbyist for the Georgian government.

kat and other O’supporters just don’t get it. Mccain and jindal are not mocking the practice of inflating tires. Instead
They are mocking the O for making this a major deal in his so-called energy policy
They are mocking his condescending attitude toward the American people on this issue
They are mocking the O naivete on continuing to make this an issue by bringing it up on the campaign trail
They are mocking his math skills as his math assumes nobody in America inflates their tires
They are mocking their PR folks that they would even allow and push a story that has the words “Obama, inflate and air” in the same headline – very fitting for the great O.

The tire inflation thing is crazy. I drive for a living and I would say that very few people drive with under inflated tires. SAVE WHAT? ALSO, the HINT that the US is serious about increasing our domestic oil supplies WILL drop the price – AS IT HAS DONE IN THE PAST. NOBAMA – NO OIL POLICY.
Posted by: Temagami | August 10, 2008, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm
again yadda yadda yadda. People realize that this drilling for oil is not a permanet fix, but it could ease the pressure until a real soultion is found. I mean how long will it take to really get electric, battery opperating cars, alternative fuel, to be the norm with american people probably awhile so thats not an immediate solution either. While we are on the subject the moderater asked bill richardson why he didnt do this while in bill’s adminstration and we could have seen the results by now and he gave some bland answer. Nothing is going to give us immmediate results and I fail to see the option as well we wont drill cause it will take a while.

Back in Jan of 07 Obama tried to get a bill thru committee (sole sponsor) which would among other things prevent the Dept of Interior from using high tech methods of surveying oil and gas deposits in offshore underground areas. Something like using a road atlas instead of Mapquest and GPS. Bill never got out of committee as it was totally impractical. Obama speaks well, but is an airhead.

That’s a good suggestion, dl. but most of these peole get their news from the American media and aren’t aware of how easily they are being manipulated. Bobby Jindal is just another smooth-talking politician who is good at reciting the GOP talking points and appearing to be “non-partisan”. John “Bomb,Bomb Iran” McCain is IGNORANT when it comes to foreign policy. He has actually called for Russia to be expelled from the G-8 which most foreign policy analysts referred to as “dumb”. He has also espressed concern that Russia has reduced energy supplies to Czechoslovakia, which hasn’t existed as a country since 1992. Yeah he’s a real foreign policy expert!

70 percent, No. But if we can chop it down by 10-30 percent combined with requiring US speculators to come up with 30 – 50 percent up front – price will drop substantially. My biggest fear is a world crisis situation with US sitting on butt debating and doing nothing. Sure alternatives a must for the long run, but what about tomorrow if you know what hits the fan?

Bill Richardson, this time, sold out Zero-bama for giving him a good advice of powering plug-in cars using electricity generated by burning coals and natural gas. He deceives you by this plug-in hybrid “long-term” energy strategy, but he is making Al Gore awake in his dreams for the amount of green gas 0bama is going to make to sabotage his saving the Earth from global warming plan.
Richardson said he could use “clean carbon coals” to generate electricity. 0bama apparently thought coals can be clean.

When Bush stood up and announced a policy of Drill, Drill, Drill, oil prices started dropping THAT VERY DAY! But oh, no, they dropped because of the fear of a “world economic slowdown” the talking heads had been yapping about for months, or “demand destruction’ – brought about by everyone suddenly inflating their tires, no doubt.
The indication of new oil supplies brings an immediate drop in the futures market, which rockets back down to the spot price. Economics 101. Simple for most of us, just proves most of the O talking point repeaters are still in junior high and haven’t had an econ class yet.

As far as oil drilling goes, any oil we now find in the US goes to the world market not exclusively the US market. IT WON’T BE OUR OIL. BASED ON US CONSUMPTION BEING ROUGHLY 25% OF WORLD TOTALS, 75% OF THE OIL McCain WANTS TO ALLOW TO BE PUMPED IS GOING TO BE OUTSOURCED TO CHINA AND OTHER COUNTRIES.
We of course get to pay world prices for our 25%. The oil companies get 100% of the profit of course.

ONE OF MY FRIENDS WAS ON THE LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD–Aand for 20 years i have tried to convince him that kids should be kept in school for at least 15 years–and put a crimp in the innorance that is rampant in society today—most people do not realize what is happening and only know what some idiot tells them—rush limbaugh and the likes do a lot of damage

i have explained numerous times that biodiesel would be an excellent start–as there would be no delay—and dont try that we will run out of food crap–as there is no downside—-oil squezed from plants leaved behind one of the best cattle food money can buy –the oil part is fattening and of no other value—and animal waste makes a natural fertilizer—we have the land to grow and make changes–not all the answer but a great start—

like her or not pelosi has the right attitude as we will simply fall back into the same old oil trap—-the 70s should have taught us something .WE MUST BECOME INDEPENDANT AS WE ONCE WERE

Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006…LOOK IT UP. Opened up 8 million acres of Continental shelf, with estimated 40 billion barrels of oil. So far 7 billion found.Still no drilling… and when this was passed oil was $60 a barrel. Drill Drill McCain can BS all he wants…cheap gas is gone forever. We are not going to drill our way out.
Posted by: linda n carolina | August 10, 2008, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm
So you’re saying that increased supplies – even if they are sold on the world market at open market rates – has been bringing prices down?
Bad parrot! You’re stepping all over one of your hero’s biggest talking points-that even if we drill here, the oil will be sold on the world market and so we won’t get the benefit. According to your post, we will not only get the benefit of lower prices, but we will have the added perks of new jobs and new tax revenue from the sale of American oil.

Lots of ignorance out there about oil.
1. US consumption has decreased due to higher cost of gas plus the faltering economy.
2. The Iraqi government demanding an end to US occupation will lead to a 10% decrease in US demand for oil.
One other example of the economic burden of the flawed invasion of Iraq. Our military presence in Iraq alone accounts for almost 10% of US consumption. Summarized from AP:
The U.S. consumes about 21 million of the world demand of 86 million barrels of oil per day.
The Defense Department is the nation’s single largest user of energy. At 1.6 million gallons a day in Iraq, the war alone accounts for over 7.6% of US demand. If we were to account for total military, let alone government usage we would be over 10% at least.
Getting out of Iraq would cut our consumption almost 10% and likely cut prices too. Iraq has been priced in as guaranteed consumption to this point.

I agree, and this is why Obama and the Democrats are imploding. McCain is the real answer for the election and will become the next President of the United States!

As I Democrat I hate to say it, but Richardson came off as a buffoon and Jindal came off as a class act. The Democrats are in trouble if McCain decides to bring Jindal onto the ticket. He’s bipartison and smart.
Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Aug 10, 2008 5:02:52 PM
Richardson has always been a “yes” man to Obama in hopes of getting the VP nod. Now, that doesn’t seem apparent and Richardson is confused as usual. This interview will hurt Obama. Jindal is a very smart man, a class act! McCain should seriously consider him on the ticket. He definitely put Richardson and Obama away in this interview….the Dems are in trouble and continue to spiral downward. McCain 08!

Man, another zero-bama “long-term” energy strategy. Bet he will come out of his vocation, and re-explain his energy plans. He forgot to tell you if he stops the military using oil, he will save 5 more off-shore drillings. This, plus his inflating your tire and save one off-shore drilling, makes a total of 6 off-shore drilling oil that 0-bama saves you!!!

McCain has been in beholden to lobbyist since the time of his banking scandals as part of the Keating 5. Mccains believes in the one hand washes the other style. Former Sen Gramm ” America is a nation of whiners” fame who is one of the biggest lobbyist there is. Gramm, Mccain & the Republicans when they were in the Senate Majority, created and passed laws which deregulated & loosened controls of the Banking and Energy industries. Which resulted in the current crisises now befalling America such as the mortgage crisis, uncontrolled speculation in the Energy resulting in the collapse of Enron and the of astrnomically high cost not to mention the current bank failures. McCain is to beholden to lobbyist, I am not convinced he would put America’s intersts ahead of his lobbyist friends. Take for example McCain’s help in overturning the largest Military Aircraft tanker contract awarded to Boeing and awarded it to EADS (European). According to lobbying records filed with the Senate, Loeffler Group lobbyists on the project included Loeffler and Susan Nelson, who left the firm and is now the campaign’s finance director. The Ogilvy lobbyist John Green, who was assigned the EADS work, recently took a leave of absence to volunteer for McCain as the campaign’s congressional liaison.
And now McCains son is involved in his own banking scandal. The apple never falls to far from the tree!
The fallout from the Silver State Bank fiasco continued on Friday as the company announced a wider-than-expected quarterly loss and CEO Corey Johnson resigned. Johnson’s resignation follows the resignation of Board of Directors’ member Andrew McCain, who was on the bank’s Auditing Committee. McCain is the son of presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain. McCain and Johnson’s departures came on the heels of resignation of one of the bank’s executive vice-presidents, who left just two months ago.
Silver State Bancorp (SSXB.O), the bank’s holding company, announced a net loss for the second quarter $62.7 million, or $4.15 a share, compared with a profit of $6.2 million, or 44 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts had expected a loss of 65 cents a share. The company also said that it was suspending its share repurchase program, not a huge surprise since they announced that they need to raise another $40 million in capital just to survive. Since the share price has dropped over 95% in the past year (almost 90% since McCain joined the bank), and is down another 15% just today (trading at just over one dollar), raising capital through the sale of shares could be disastrous for shareholders who have already been hit hard by the bank’s financial problems.
Although the bank today blamed most of their financial woes on loan losses, which ballooned from $1.9 million a year ago to $58.6 million during the last quarter, it was their involvement with one of the largest financial frauds in history that has raised serious questions about the bank’s business practices. An article on The Faulking Truth, entitled Silver State Bank: What’s Deposited in Vegas Doesn’t Stay in Vegas details the bank’s shady involvement in the defrauding of over 50,000 shareholders in the CMKM Diamonds scam. The story has since been widely circulated on the internet, including news sites such as What Really Happened and the Huffington Post.
McCain’s/Gramm’s policies are poison for America Fiscal well being!

I re-watched the interview with Bill Richardson and Bobby Jindal. Why in the heck Obama has Richardson out there being his spokesperson is beyond me. Richardson, like Obama, has no clue whats going on between Russia and Georgia. Richardson couldn’t even answer the questions directly, always trying to make McCain look negative. His actions have signalled trouble for the Obama campaign.
Jindal, class act to the fullest. Answered the questions directly, never batted an eye. Stated how McCain would handle the Georgia/Russia violence, lent a lot of respect to McCain in experience, tactics, plans, etc. With this war mounting, and at this time in the campaign, its very clear that McCain would be the better candidate for President. I think Jindal made this clear in his interview.

FYI:
“They must be very cautious in being used by a party in this very explosive situation,” said Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institution. “The initial McCain statement seemed very overheated, as not one of extreme caution.”

Yes we need McCain, who can make such intellecutal arguments as Russia must leave Georgia immediately because the Russians violated the sovereignty of another country.
Immediately.
As in a very short timeframe.
Because they violated the sovereignty…
And yet instead of asking the obvious follow-up question of the Arizona senator, the media remained focused on John Edwards’ affair. Sigh.

What is needed to resolve these conflicts without cowboying up and simply bombing and invading like GW is diplomacy….something that this Republican administration does not have a clue about. And with all of McCain’s “experience” diplomacy is not his strong suit either. It’s more than time for a change of direction and McCain simply cannot change….he is a part of the problem….

“‘I think this is another example, during these uncertain times, where we need experienced leadership,’ Jindal told ABC News’ Jake Tapper.”
If McCain’s experience has yielded such wisdom, why did he vote to invade Iraq? It’s blunders like this that have gotten America into the mess it’s in.
“‘We need someone like Senator McCain who will take a stronger view, a more experienced view when it comes to international security and protecting America’s interest.’”
The misadventure in Iraq has *weakened* America’s interests, not strengthened them.
“‘We need to go beyond condemning the violence and actually offering solutions.’”
Solutions like what–kicking Russia out of the G8? Kind of a hotheaded move, don’t you think? How about a cool, calm, collected approach to foreign policy?
“He said McCain has a comprehensive approach to solving America’s energy problems while Obama ‘wants us to inflate our tires.’”
Obama has a comprehensive energy strategy–with an emphasis on building new, green technologies, not on old approaches.
But for what it’s worth, inflating our tires would do more to reduce our dependence on foreign oil than McCain’s drilling plan would–at essentially no cost.

Jindal has been a brilliant surrogate for Mccain. Jindal is a brilliant governor for LA. Jindal is indeed american’s upcoming star of washington. I’m all for a Mccain JIndal ticket. I’m also hoping and praying that Obama will choose Richardson as his vp…what a joke!
