McCain and Obama Reach Agreement on Debates

The campaigns of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and John McCain, R-Ariz., today announced they’d agreed to the general framework for three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate this Fall.

A joint statement issued by both camps claims the "campaigns have come to the earliest agreement on presidential debates reached in any general election in recent history." The terms were negotiated by Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Illinois, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC.

None of the presidential debates are taking place in a battleground state, which seems dumb. Two are taking place in the South, but none in New Orelans, despite the pleas of local officials.

Two of the moderators will be from PBS, and nome will be from ABC News, which also seems quite idiotic to me.

All four debates will begin at 9pm ET, and last for 90 minutes.  The sked, format, etc. etc., is as follows:

Sept 26: First presidential debate:
*Site:  University of Mississippi
*Topic:  Foreign Policy & National Security
*Moderator:  Jim Lehrer, PBS
*Staging:  Podium debate
*Answer Format:  The debate will be broken into nine, 9-minute segments.  The moderator will introduce a topic and allow each candidate 2 minutes to comment.  After these initial answers, the moderator will facilitate an open discussion of the topic for the remaining 5 minutes, ensuring that both candidates receive an equal amount of time to comment

Oct 2:.Vice Presidential debate
*Site:  Washington University (St. Louis)
*Moderator:  Gwen Ifill, PBS
*Staging/Answer Format:  To be resolved after both parties’ Vice Presidential nominees are selected.

Oct 7:.Second presidential debate
*Site:  Belmont University (Nashville, Tenn.)
*Moderator:  Tom Brokaw, NBC
*Staging:  Town Hall debate
*Format:  The moderator will call on members of the audience (and draw questions from the internet).  Each candidate will have 2 minutes to respond to each question.  Following those initial answers, the moderator will invite the candidates to respond to the previous answers, for a total of 1 minute, ensuring that both candidates receive an equal amount of time to comment.  In the spirit of the Town Hall, all questions will come from the audience (or internet), and not the moderator.

Oct 15:.Third presidential debate
*Site:  Hofstra University (Long Island, NY)
*Topic:  Domestic and Economic policy
*Moderator:  Bob Schieffer, CBS
*Staging:  Candidates will be seated at a table
*Answer Format:  Same as First Presidential Debate
*Closing Statements:  At the end of this debate (only) each candidate shall have the opportunity for a 90 second closing statement.

Nobodys fool
You’re absolutely right! It’s hilarious to be that they can’t seem to figure out why they were excluded from the process. Duh! Their line of tabloid questions was a disgrace.

Why won’t 0bama do town halls?

The only network that even attempts to be fair…..has no representation on the debate moderator team
While George, Jake and others were asking tough fair questions Tom was reporting on the flavor of ice cream Obama liked. Cant wait to see the deep questions he selects.

This is good for McCain because if he could hold his own in these 3 Liberal controlled debates means he won the debate!!

Posted by: spock | August 21, 2008, 10:37 am 10:37 am

The second debate will be a Town Hall.
They say –
“In the spirit of the Town Hall, all questions will come from the audience (or internet), and not the moderator.”
Are the questions from the audience pre-screened? Who decides which questions from the internet to use? I am sure it will be McCain and Obama handlers.
The other 2 debates — can you really trust the Jim Lehrer and Bob Schieffer to ask tough questions of both Obama and McCain?

Obama can not handle real debates.
He can only do scripted debates, speeches and statements.
Shows his inability to be able handle any diplomatic situations that can arise.
What is he going to do if a foreign nation ask him a direct Question, take recess to get the answer from someone who knows something?
He should go to hollywoods where They make their claim to fame on scripted living.

The second debate is a townhall filled by Gallup with “undecided voters”.
uh huh
The local people of Nashville will not be able to attend.
Strange.

According to the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, the answer is yes. Released at 2:16 this afternoon, the new Gallup numbers give McCain a 49 to 45 percent edge over his rival from Illinois…..

Flash Override: “$5 million” WAS a joke. Here is what Sen. McCain actually said:
“So I think if you’re just talking about income, how about 5 million. So–seriously, I don’t think you can–I don’t think, seriously that–the point is that I’m trying to make here seriously–and I’m sure that comment will be distroed, but the point is–the point is–the point is that we want to keep people’s taxes low and increase revenues.”
Obviously he was joking! And the audience laughed because it was a joke. A poor joke. But a joke nonetheless.
Now then Sen. Obama’s answer was: “If you are making $150 thousand a year or less as a family, then are you middle class or you may be poor. But $150 down, you are basically middle class. Obviously it depends on the region where you are living.”
GUESS WHAT? According to the latest IRS data (2006) updated July 2008: $153,542 is the cutoff for the Top FIVE PERCENT; and $108,904 is the cutoff for the Top TEN PERCENT.

Obama needs a teleprompter.

Posted by: janephilip | August 21, 2008, 11:06 am 11:06 am

I understand that Sen. McCain was asked yesterday this question, ‘how many houses do you own?,’ and he couldn’t answer that question.
———-
“I think — I’ll have my staff get to you.” — John McCain, when asked by Politico how many houses he owns.
———–
When a McCain supporter said that she thought we would have to institute a draft to pursue bin Laden, McCain said that he didn’t disagree.
————
Yesterday at a townhall meeting, an audience member praised Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for his vow to “follow bin Laden to the gates of hell.” After a long question about veterans’ care, the questioner said she believed we needed to reinstate the draft, to which McCain seemed to readily agree:
QUESTIONER: If we don’t reenact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.
[Appaluse]
MCCAIN: Ma’am, let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said.

Lets hope these debates are not bias to one candidate or the other. Without telepromtor, Obama does not do well. Make sure Obama doesn’t have a hearing piece in his ear.

Posted by: jp,michigan | August 21, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

Sorry, that should have been: “…that comment will be distorted..”

Posted by: James Danley | August 21, 2008, 11:11 am 11:11 am

McCain will be bumbling fool at the debates. No cone of silence to violate to hear the questions first this time. Also Joe Liberman can’t whisper the answers in his ear. McCain is done for.

Posted by: BS | August 21, 2008, 11:15 am 11:15 am

Lucy, and so what is your point about the draft? Several Democrats have been calling for the reinstatement of the draft for years.

Posted by: James Danley | August 21, 2008, 11:15 am 11:15 am

James, you make my point for me. By “people” McCain means the top 1.5% of the population.
Its obvious from the tape that he wasnt joking and he was being laughed at.
McCain makes about $6 million a year, and he may have been trying to say that he doesn’t know, except that he considers himself rich.
If you believe that he was joking you have to believe that he has now idea what he’s talking about.

Posted by: Flash Override | August 21, 2008, 11:24 am 11:24 am

Figures Obama would avoid answering real questions like the plague. Course he also failed miserably at the Saddleback forum so who knows. Hopefully a question or two will be asked as to why Obama is in favor of killing live babies.
Lucy, McCain has always stated (as noted by Marc Ambinder at the atlantic) that only a full blown World War 3. Not surpisingly you’re leaving out the vast majority of the question which was “My son is an officer in the Air Force, I’m a vet., and I was raised in a military family. And I think it’s a sorry state of affairs. When we have illegal aliens; having a medic-aid card that can access specialists, top physicians, the best of medical, and our vets can’t even get to a doctor. And these are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t re-enact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of Hell.”. If you read Ambinder’s post you’ll see McCain says nothing about the draft at all in response. In fact the only people who have brought draft legislation are democrats! Even though they lie and say “Well there’s talk of a draft” because of their legislation. or the make a crappy ad about a newborn who wouldn’t be close to 18 even if McCain served 2 terms.

Posted by: Zaggs | August 21, 2008, 11:26 am 11:26 am

You libs are funny you attack McCain for having 5 million dollars which pails in comparison to what Obama has, to what the know nothing celebrities have that are out there supporting Obama, the millionaires that ?Obama meets secretly with in San Francisco multiple times
Obama is an elitist American Hating Socialist!!
McCain was joking get over it!!

Posted by: spock | August 21, 2008, 11:33 am 11:33 am

Anyone who believes that McCain did well last Sat because he violated the “cone of silence”…I…just…don’t understand…paranoia…too bizarre…to comprehend…living in a world insane…
Look, Obama did not do terribly, he just moseyed around and can’t take a stand on a lot of hot button issues…McCain has the benefit of surety. He is certainly thoughtful, but when you punt on big questions it makes people think you can’t take them on.

Posted by: Wade | August 21, 2008, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm

Flash Override, but you missed my point. Sen. Obama says those making under $150,000 are middle class. Clearly Sen. Obama was not joking, because he has based his entire economic plan on giving tax cuts to those making less than $150,000.
THEREFORE since individuals earning between $108,904 and $153,542 are in the top 6-10%, Sen. Obama wants to give tax breaks to the wealthiest 6-10% of income earners! OH MY…Sen. Obama wants to give tax cuts to the rich!!!!

Posted by: James Danley | August 21, 2008, 12:53 pm 12:53 pm

Those who are saying “Obama needs a teleprompter” have obviously never seen him without one. I have. He’ll do just fine.
Meanwhile, McCain might want to have an index card with some notes on it. Notes like: how many houses he owns; what countries border Iraq; that kind of stuff.

Posted by: chrenson | August 21, 2008, 1:08 pm 1:08 pm

I didn’t see the the ABC debate between Obama and Clinton hosted by Gibson and Stepanopoulos, but heard it didn’t go well. That could be why ABC has been excluded from the upcoming debates.

Posted by: kat | August 21, 2008, 1:24 pm 1:24 pm

None of these debates are being held in the West. Obama seriously needs to do some more campapigning in the West instead of spening so much time in the South, where they are not going to vote for him. He has never campaigned where I live or given any speehes here, yet I am supposed to vote for him.
If he chooses some midwestern or southern boring zero for VP like Baye, Sebilius, or Kaine, I will vote GREEN.

Posted by: Karen | August 21, 2008, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

Karen, I’m from Virginia and we’ve been passed up by Democratic candidates for as long as I can remember. But now, Obama has a real shot here in the Commonwealth thanks to people like Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. I respect your desire to make a point by voting Green if you don’t like the VP selection. But, is it really worth four more years of McBush just to make that point? And ultimately who is the greener candidate, Obama or McBush?

Posted by: chrenson | August 21, 2008, 3:01 pm 3:01 pm

Obama will do just fine. And contrary to the ignorant postings Senator Obama does not need a teleprompter – his ability to speak extemporaneously is very well known in the halls of Congress. I do not think his academic training in law and debate will hinder him either. Now on the other hand I think we may be very surprised at the responses from John McCain – especially if they involve what many would consider a common sense response.

Posted by: OnTheGloryRoad | August 21, 2008, 3:02 pm 3:02 pm

What happened to the “I will debate
John McCain anywhere, anytime”….?
What happened to a series of town hall
debates?
What happened to the pledge to take
federal funds for the campaign?
Barry happened….that’s what.

Posted by: Trajan | August 21, 2008, 4:10 pm 4:10 pm

The reason John McCain jokes around so much is that he is comfortable with himself. He has earned his stripes and doesn’t have to prove it to anyone. That’s why I like the man, among other reasons. That is not the perception I have of B. Obama. That man spends most of his time and energy just trying to fit in to where he is. That’s why he is constantly changing positions; he is trying to gain a wider public acceptance. This should become more apparent in debates.

Reading most of the “Praise be to obama the messiah” rhetoric posted here certainly does not support the myth that obama attracts the more educated voters.

“Two of the moderators will be from PBS, and nome will be from ABC News, which also seems quite idiotic to me.”
haha, thats laughable that you wouldn’t know why this is. its called objective reporting and established journalistic integrity. After that **** stephonopalous pulled, you think we’d want the MSM hosting ANY of these debates? its time for a respectable news source to take center stage.
yay PBS!

Posted by: voter in PA | August 21, 2008, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

They’re clearly trying to spare ABC the public embarrassment of having Stephanopoulos and Gibson moderate another debate. Both are smart, capable and engaging people, but clearly debate moderation is not among their skills. That last Obama/Clinton debate was the most inane, trivial, worthless waste of time I have ever experienced.

Posted by: Shalimar | August 21, 2008, 10:23 pm 10:23 pm

At this point in the game, whatever is going to happen is going to happen. And all the witty comments and counterpoints here are completely irrelevant.
All of this “thrashing” should tell all of you how ridiculous and devisive our political process has become. The camouflaged race baiting doesn’t help either – from both party’s.
Get a life,
and good luck with all of that.

Posted by: Jeff Roe | August 21, 2008, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm

It’s a shame Obama didn’t agree to the townhall forums that McCain wanted. Afraid, I guess. Without that teleprompter, he’s nothing.

Posted by: Peach | August 21, 2008, 11:49 pm 11:49 pm

I am so pleased that two of the debates will be handled by PBS. At least those two debates will be unbiased. I also think the NBC and CBS will be alright. I’m glad that Fox and ABC are not included. Both have shown obvious bias and should not be considered.

Posted by: Ann | August 22, 2008, 8:48 am 8:48 am

I hope these debates are better than previous debates. The last one was terrific. Obama is getting so old with the same old speeches. Obama is so unqualified to be President, I find crazy that we looking at him at all. The democrats had eight years to find some one who could fill the bill and they failed again, which just goes to show you how poor they are as a group. Just look at who is running the DNC and it tells you all you need to know about the democrats. The slanted press hates republicans so much it really doesn’t make any difference who the republicans are running, which is a shame.
When I look at Obama it gives the creeps that this nobody is on the same stage as John McCain. Everytime we find out he has a friend he dumps them -president at any cost I guess.
The only good that may come from these debates is that maybe many Americans will wake up and see how superficial this do nothing monday morning quarter back. Who watches other people work and than points out their faults 20/20 hind sight – But he himself has never done anything but talk talk.
The scaring thing is the liberal media is trying their best to hijack this election with lies, partial lies and spins.

Posted by: a citizen | August 22, 2008, 12:38 pm 12:38 pm

Obama’s people will probably want the questions ahead of time and in order so he can have his teleprompter up to speed…and, of course, no tough questions. That’s just too much to expect from the Messiah!

Posted by: lame | August 23, 2008, 12:58 am 12:58 am

Why is it that only liberal media get to act as moderators? Why doesn’t Harry Reid cry foul on this? Could it be that he isn’t really interested in fair play? Imagine if taxpayers helped underwrite “public television” that had conservative leanings! Obama would have a hissy fit quicker than Edwards could deny the allegations of the National Enquirer!

I think Bob Schieffer is one of the nicest people. CBS has to be proud by such a seasoned politician.
