ABC News’s Bret Hovell reports: John McCain said the new web ad his campaign released Friday is just an effort to inject some humor into the campaign.
"We were having some fun," McCain told reporters in Panama City, FL, about the ad which draws messianic comparisons between Obama and Moses. "We were having some fun with our supporters that we sent it out to and we’re gonna display a sense of humor in this campaign."
McCain stood by his commitment to keep the campaign a respectful one, brushing off questions as to whether Friday’s ad, and one earlier in the week comparing Obama to a celebrity in the vein of Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, muddied those waters.
"This is a very respectful campaign," McCain said. "I’ve repeated my admiration and respect for Senator Obama…I don’t think our campaign is negative in the slightest. I’m, we think it’s got a lot of humor in it and we’re having fun and enjoying it. And that is what campaigns are going to be like."
McCain was also given an opportunity to respond to comments is campaign manager, Rick Davis, made Thursday, when he said that Obama had injected race into the presidential campaign.
McCain agreed that Obama had played the "race card," when Obama said that McCain’s campaign was trying to "scare [voters] about me. They’re going to try to say that I’m a risky guy, they’re going to try to say, ‘Well you know he’s got a funny name and he doesn’t look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.’"
"I think his comments were clearly, were clearly the race card because of what he said," McCain said. "Everybody can read his remarks."
