McCain: ‘We’re Not Sending Any Negative Message’
ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Rigel Anderson Report: In an interview with National Public Radio which is set to run Wednesday on "Morning Edition," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., argued that he is not sending "any negative message" in his White House run.
"We’re not sending any negative message in our campaign," said McCain. "We’re drawing differences in positions between myself and Senator Obama, which are significant. He wants to raise taxes; I want to keep them low. He doesn’t want to drill offshore or have nuclear power; I want both. I’ve never heard Steve Schmidt say we need a negative message in the campaign. …I’ve run many, many campaigns and I have never believed that we need a strong negative message."
McCain defended the tenor of his campaign when asked about a story in The Wall Street Journal that credited recently elevated advisor Steve Schmidt with the philosophy that campaigns need one positive message about the candidate and one negative message about the opponent.
The Arizona senator argued that he is not sending any negative message even though he is running a series of ads portraying Obama as a lightweight whose fame is undeserving.
When asked if his ad blaming Obama for high gas prices is a negative message, McCain pointed to Obama’s vote for the 2005 Bush energy bill which McCain described as having "all kinds of tax breaks and giveaways . . . to the oil companies."
"I believe strongly that if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem," said McCain.
Asked if he is comfortable with ads comparing his opponent to Paris Hilton, McCain said, "I’m very comfortable with my campaign and I strongly recommend that people who don’t find humor in that: relax, turn off the computer, and go on out and get some fresh air . . ."
McCain also spoke with NPR about the future of U.S. Russia relations.
"I don’t think that there’s going to be a re-ignition of the Cold War; don’t get me wrong," said McCain.
"I don’t think there’s going to be nuclear-weapons build-ups, etc., but I think that Russian behavior is not acceptable and we will do what we can to maintain our alliances and our friends and make the Russians understand that this kind of behavior is not a part of what we view as the 21st century."
The audio will be posted at approximately 10:00 am ET on Wednesday at www.NPR.org.

Johnny “the Songbird” McCain is scarier than Bush even though they are basically being advised by the SAME people– this will be born out with the increasingly bellicose rhetoric the “bald wrinkly OLD man” is broadcasting towards Moscow. God help us all if gets elected.

Oh Paul007ex
You have got to be kidding me. grandstand, belittle Georgia, and saber-rattle is right out of the Bush playbook.
I was waiting for him to start singing Georgia on My Mind. What a joke of a candidate McCain is.
When you say something derrogatory against your opponent in over half the ad ummmm that’s a negative ad. I would say in almost EVERY ad McSame has released is NEGATIVE. How about McBush giving us some positiv information about himself (roll out that old tired video of him on in the hospital 40+ years ago).
To pull britner spears, paris hilton, waynes world, and taco bell into your ads are just plaing asinine stupid and childish. The country is struggling coupled with making a SERIOUS decision to pick the next president and he takes this low road. Oh please. How can someone sooooo old be soooo childish.
Grow up McCain.

What is Obama’s qualifications to be President? He is far less qualified than the jack… thats in office now. This democrats tired of every time someone questions Obama’s experience, or the kooks he surrounded himself with, the media screams racism! How is Obama different other than his extreme lack of experience than any other politician! I’m a democrat but I’m not going to be forced into voting for him because I’m a Democrat and the republicans are attacking the black candidate, after hearing The Clinton’s were attacking the “black” candidate! In this democrats mind he is weak and grossly under qualified and has made poor personal decisions since graduating college!

If John McCain cannot be trusted to tell the truth on such a simple and obvious matter as this, he cannot be trusted to lead. He is a deceptive politician of the old school politics of personal destruction. He is not commander and chief material. Only Barack Obama has the good judgement and and integrity to lead our country.

This is what the world is waiting for with the community organizer OBAMA: China is waiting to invade taiwain and continue to arm Iran with no US troops in Iraq, Russia is waiting to arm itself and Iran and any other western-hating nation, The Palestinians are waitng to tape dynamite to themselves and blowup a school, restaurant or synagogue, Chavez and casto’s brother a waiting to drink tea with Obama and then they can post pictures of themselves with Obama and their fellow countryman will laugh…Obama = Carter. Some in the world may hate us and some may laugh at our President BUT WITH OBAMA THEY WILL LAUGH AT US!

You are a fearmongering lunatic. You got it wrong. Most of the world hates us and laughing at us and most of them are our allies.
This kooky picture you have painted no country can combat alone. Obama urges other nations unite to tackle the problems you suggested. If we as McSame suggest began to rattle our sabers and start blasting ultimatums even when it is known by all that we are stretched to the threads already fighting two wars (one ill-advised) is Russia calls ups us on our ante, where do we go from there. Russia invading Georgia is almost a carbon copy of how the US invaded Iraq. How high does the hypocrisy rise.

Pretty funny that the semi-literate Omentum wants to criticize someone else for being childish.
The Obamans cry whenever people do not bow down in amazement. Sure, McCain is making fun of Obama’s lack of even one single accomplishment (other than figuring out how the Democratic primary voter’s mind works) and his total lack of a platform other than “change”. Seems like asking whether someone who has come from nowhere is who he says he is (this week), and asking whether that person is qualified to lead, is a pretty legitimate issue.
Besides, how can you have a “positive” campaign when Obama doesn’t have any issues of his own, other than to change his position every 4 months when the facts on the ground prove that his empty rhetoric is simply wrong.
McCain has actually been pretty easy on Obama.

You know enough about Obama to know that if you continue this tired argument that America don’t know Obama may continue to prevent folks people from voting for Obama. You don’t know anything about Obama is because you CHOOSE not to. Obama is the most tech-savvy candidate ever in politics. Everything you need to know about him his policies are on his website. He also wrote TWO books. He has MORE experience that the Decider when he was running for president. I didn’t hear you casting aspersions then. And if you did know anything about the Decider you would know he had the CLOSEST ties to the mastermind of 9/11 than ANYONE period. So much so is that he took specific care to fly his family out on that terrible day. Now McSame is basically in bed with Bush and his cronies and you call Obama a risk. Laughable.
I would agree that McCain hasbeen in the public eye for nearly 60 years and what I know of him make me run to vote for OBAMA.

baloney. mccain is flat out lying about Obama’s position and record on taxes.
McCain released three new ads with multiple false and misleading claims about Obama’s tax proposals.
A TV spot claims Obama once voted for a tax increase “on people making just $42,000 a year.” That’s true for a single taxpayer, who would have seen a tax increase of $15 for the year – if the measure had been enacted. But the ad shows a woman with two children, and as a single mother, she would not have been affected unless she made more than $62,150. The increase that Obama once supported as part of a Democratic budget bill is not part of his current tax plan anyway.
A Spanish-language radio ad claims the measure Obama supported would have raised taxes on “families” making $42,000, which is simply false. Even a single mother with one child would have been able to make $58,650 without being affected. A family of four with income up to $90,000 would not have been affected.
The TV ad claims in a graphic that Obama would “raise taxes on middle class.” In fact, Obama’s plan promises cuts for middle-income taxpayers and would increase rates only for persons with family incomes above $250,000 or with individual incomes above $200,000.
The radio ad claims Obama would increase taxes “on the sale of your home.” In fact, home-sale profits of up to $500,000 per couple would continue to be exempt from capital gains taxes. Very few sales would see an increase under Obama’s proposal to raise the capital gains rate.
A second radio ad, in English, says, “Obama has a history of raising taxes” on middle-class Americans. But that’s false. It refers to a vote that did not actually result in a tax increase and could not have done so.

Your post was complete garbage. I am not defending Obama nor the way he runs his campaign. What i am ticked about is that we now face a serious issue. Folks need to see less of McCains negative attacks (ie paris waynes world brittney taco bell) an more of his policies. I am sick and you also should be fed up with the low road ads mcluny is running. Interesting that these type ads didn’t start until the Rove minion started running his campaign.
Dont you realize they know the BIG SECRET. Republican vote based on fear and numskull wedge issues. They also dont have the mental capacity or ability to think for themselves. If you say something enough time it
1) keep the true issues off the table
2) creates this cloud of confusion. Once republicans are confused … which is often… they resort to the status quo.
3) people will buy into the lie.
So please continue keep passing the koolaid …. i truly believe american will not be drinking this time

Negative ads? How about negative verbal blunders? I’m surprised that John McCain hasn’t done what his fellow party candidates did during the primaries like calling Barack ‘Obama Bin Laden’ when they try to call attention to Osama Bin Laden, but are really intentionally putting it out there that Obama was a terrorist.
Or how about the other Republican UNTRUTH of saying, ‘Obama is a Muslim’ when Obama is really a Christian.
Not that religion should ever be a factor, but in the minds of many Americans religion does, but we all pretend that it does not.
Or how about the Old Republican sneaky tricky trick of calling Obama ‘Flip flop Obama’,
when in fact it is John McCain who holds the title for more than 8 years of being called ‘Double Talk’ by his own Republican party.
With any campaign can we ever expect there to be NO negative campaign ads? Wouldn’t it just be lovely? Maybe we should put it up there with ‘CAN WE JUST ALL BE FRIENDS?’

I think a lot of people believe that at some point in his life, Barack Obama was a Muslim. His Dad was a Muslim as well as his step Dad. He spent several years in a Muslim country (Indonesia). He can recite the Koran (the Muslim Bible) and is very proud of that. His middle name is Hussein … in fact, all three of his names (Barack Hussein Obama) are Muslim. I don’t mind if Obama had once been a Muslim (even as a child) or had been confused as to whether he was Muslim or Christian. What I find unnverving is that he continually just flat out denies that there is anything even remotely Muslim about him. The man is not Pope John Paul. He has an ambiguos past – I wish he would just explain it like it is and we can move on. He keeps denying his Muslim heritage and this just fuels the rumors

Top Ten Reasons for John McCain to Hate Barack Obama…
1.Obama looks GREAT in sunglasses, and you look, well, like an old fart wearing sunglasses.
2. Obama has at least thirty years left to live, maybe ten times McCain’s remaining number.
3. Obama has a beautiful and intact nuclear family with no bimbo history.
4. Obama hasn’t and wouldn’t call Michelle a trollop or a c***.
5. Obama wouldn’t use the fake ass “Gas Tax Holiday” pander s**t that McCain tried to sell as a good idea.
6. Obama has become a world famous celebrity while all McCain can do is try to make that seem like a bad thing.
7. Obama is loved by citizens of other nations while McCain is surely seen as just another American joke.
8. Obama draws enormous crowds while McCain draws yawns.
9. Young people are particularly excited by Obama, while McCain put his base to sleep.
10. Obama is going to kick McCain’s ass and become president.

Top 10 Reasons for Cindy McCain to Hate Michelle Obama:
10. Michelle’s a lawyer and could take care of herself in a divorce if she had to. Cindy’s best option is to wait for her husband to die.
9. Michelle can rock a $60 dress from the Gap. Cindy spends more than that on her face every day.
8. Michelle can be sure her kids would actually vote for their dad if they could.
7. Michelle can be sure that if Republicans used racial slurs against Barak’s family, Barack would kick some ass that needs kicking. Cindy only knows that John only kisses ass.
6. Barack doesn’t have a wife #1 ghosting around on a cane – unspoken warning, “better not lose your looks, Cindy.”
5. Only C-word Barak has ever called Michelle is maybe “cupcake.” And that not in public. Cindy has heard her husband refere to her as a **t and trollup.
4. Barack introduces Michelle to world leaders at classy dinners with wit and grace. John awkwardly pimps Cindy out for a topless banana-eating contest in front of a bunch of drunk bikers.
3. Three words: Vietcong roleplay fantasies. Michelle never has to.
2. Michelle wasn’t rich when they got married. Michlle never has to worry if she was just picked for a lifetime supply of free beer.
and the #1 reason:
1. Michelle’s going to be First Lady. Cindy’s not a lady at all.

Appropriate to see Obama come out with his golf jacket on to make a comment on the Russia/Georgia conflict.
Should an Obama regime emerge, the lead liberal will probably spend most of his time on vacation…as he has shown a propensity to do so far.
As for who the Obama tax hikes will affect, get a grip on reality, people.
When the wealthy are taxed, they will:
(a) pass the costs of higher taxes on to the working class,
(b) get laws passed to avoid the taxes,
(c) both of the above.
Oh, yeah. The wealthy will continue to laugh at the ignorant liberals who actually believe anything Obama says.
With Obama, believe half of what you see and none of what you hear…

Sen. John McCain’s top foreign policy adviser prepped his boss for an April 17 phone call with the president of Georgia and then helped the presumptive Republican presidential nominee prepare a strong statement of support for the fledgling republic.
The day of the call, a lobbying firm partly owned by the adviser, Randy Scheunemann, signed a $200,000 contract to continue providing strategic advice to the Georgian government in Washington.
The McCain campaign said Georgia’s lobbying contract with Orion Strategies had no bearing on the candidate’s decision to speak with President Mikheil Saakashvili and did not influence his statement. “The Embassy of Georgia requested the call,” said campaign spokesman Brian Rogers.
But ethics experts have raised concerns about former lobbyists for foreign governments providing advice to presidential candidates about those same countries. “The question is, who is the client? Is the adviser loyal to income from a foreign client?

Obama’s elite schooling may prove a risky topic for McCain, who attended St. Stephen’s, an exclusive school in Alexandria, Va., and then Episcopal High, a private boarding school in the same city, in the 1950s. The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he ended up at the Naval Academy, where, as he often reminds voters, he graduated in the bottom 1% of his graduating class. Had it not been for his family connections, McCain would ever have become a pilot. The bottom of one’s graduating class is not from where pilots are recruited.

Great Republican planning. Obama’s acceptance speech night is the 45th anniversary of MLK’s “I have a Dream” speech. McCain’s acceptance speech is the same night as the opening night of the NFL. david from texas – you are in a sad state of you believe McCain can win in November. You know your party’s unpopular when your office holders are told to stay away from your convention. Excitement isn’t exactly building for the Republican national convention, which is shaping up to be a “considerably more staid affair” than the Democrats’ gathering, writes Richard T. Cullen of Politico. The Republican gathering in Minneapolis-St. Paul will, among other things, be marked by “the conspicuous absence of many of the usual convention attendees.” Specifically: “Of the 12 Republicans running in competitive Senate races — five of whom are incumbents —- only three have said they will be attending the convention. Six are definite no-shows, and three are on the fence.” On the House side, Cullen notes, The Hill newspaper has reported that during a July 31 conference call, “National Republican Campaign Committee Chairman Tom Cole of Oklahoma discouraged congressional hopefuls from attending, saying that doing so would potentially be a ‘waste of time.’” Not only are Republicans going to loose the presidency, they are going to lose control of the Senate as well.

Obama4McCain – hate Kool-aid. Do not drink the stuff. Senator Obama will be nominated. He will win the election. Today, Obama picked up support from several key Republicans including a former Bush official, a former U.S. Senator and former member of Congress:
The three Republicans — former Iowa Rep. Jim Leach (who formally endorsed Obama today), former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, and former White House intelligence advisor Rita E. Hauser — announced the formation of “Republicans for Obama,” which will launch a Web site in the coming days that will be a clearinghouse of information for Republicans who want to learn more about the Illinois Democrat. The site will highlight the differences between Obama and McCain on the issues and let them know where they can go to see the candidate and how they can help in his election effort. Looks like you will have to change your moniker to McCain4Obama!!!!! I can’t help but LOVE it!

McCain tells the truth, and you just think it’s negative. Obama has so many reversals of what he says that you have to wonder if he really means what he says. Even Obama’s stance on Russian aggression is scary. How many ways did he say it? Pausing to be serious on the golf course probably scared the heck out of Putin!
Putin probably already knows that Obama will stop all wars with his great communication skills and ability to bring everyone together. Therefore, he is gettin a foothold before the Great One takes office. Experience we can believe in!

While one candidate is acting like a leader, by keeping the cooler head, looking at the bigger picture, speaking in strong & clear words, but with a first priority in trying to get things resolved in a more diplomactic way, instead of automaticly calling in the troops.

The Unshrub,
Please tell us why someone should support Obama over McCain. Better yet, since they have clear policy differences, please tell us why ANYONE should have supported Obama over Clinton.
The fact is, Obama has NO MAJOR PERSONAL OR POLITICAL OR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. He moved ahead SOLELY for his oratorical skills, and partly because the media loves the idea of a black president.
So we challenge you: Why would ANYONE support Obama over Clinton? No real policy differences, both are “typical” politicians who wipe out their opponents by all means necessary, all have corporate interests backing them, etc.

you are loonier than I thought. Barack Obama is running for PRESIDENT. His family and life story is being trivialized mainly scrutinized mainly because of the actions of others and you think that someone would put up with that and NOT LOVE THEIR COUNTRY.
But we do have a candidate that ditches his disabled wife for a beer queen (a direct contributor of AA survivors) who he by the way call his beer queen a c… and a trollop in public gets a free ride by the media on that.
John McCain was the ONLY one who ran for president who EVER confessed that he didn’t LOVE HIS COUNTRY. The son and grandson of NAVY ADMIRALS and the recipient of a seat (free of charge) in the prestigious Naval Academy and HE confessed he didn’t love his country until he was getting whacked as a POW.
BUT STILL he gets a free ride on this.
But Obama, whose story is only possible in America is pinned with the aspersion of not loving his country.
This is Bizarro World.
Please say no to drugs.

The only negative people in this campaign are Obama, his wife and his supporters. They are the ones out there trying to convince the average person that America is falling apart.
Recently when a 7 year old asked Obama why he was running for President, Obama said because America is not the country it use to be?
Gee, Obama what does that mean? In the country we “use to be” a black wouldn’t have gotten this far in the election. So what exactly is his point?
Liberals are NEVER happy with this country, and their negative attitude and hatred of anything American is disgusting.

You speak of because Obama’s being black and running for president, he should somewhat be grateful for people overcoming their ignorance of the past few CENTURIES. The situation we are in as country is good for us as a country but it is also deplorable of the way the African American experience began in America and that it took this long for an African American to become a vaible leader of the country in which African Americans as part of the slave trade were the first major business boon. so please don’t expect some cum-by-yah moment. It’s more like Thank God you have lifted the ignorance and the bigotry from this country to allow this moment to really be possible.

I donated money to McCain’s campaign and have admired him for years. While I think he might well be a better President than Obama, I think there’s no doubt his campaign has gone extremely negative and he has gone against many of his positions taken earlier. This is not the McCain of 2000. I am saddened and appalled that he is embracing the tactics and advisors (Bud Day, Steve Schmidt, etc.) that helped Bush defeat him in South Carolina in 2000. In today’s America winning is everything and selling your soul to do so is part of SOP, but I had thought McCain was better than the rest. I realize now I was wrong. Whether or not I choose to vote for him this year, he’s just another contemptible politician who will say whatever it takes to win.

No, it was on there yesterday. It was on a while ago that the birth certificate on Obama’s anti smear site and on the Daily Kos was a fake. The guy who wrote this story is just connecting the dots. Anyway it was also on RealClearPolitics. That is where I saw it. I wrote a comment to the guy who wrote the story and asked wouldn’t Obama have to present his birth certificate when he ran for office and he answered and said that there was some confusion as to whether he (Obama) even presented it when he ran in Illinois the first time.

McCain isn’t running a negative campaign ad against Obama the “Mensa” candidate…he is simply advertising THE TRUTH. B. Hussein IS the American Idol celebrity candidate, and the liberal media fawns over him and never reports the facts that would shed any negative light on this guy. The Rev. Wright scandal alone (20 year association with racist anti American mentor “old uncle”) would have done in

Lee Lee 07. Also what info can be gleaned from a passport file except where you have been, your birth certificate and the info you gave when you filled out the application. Hillary and McCain have been in the public so long their travels would be part of the public record. Even Obama’s travels would be part of the public record. That leaves the info on the application and the birth certificate. What could you sell or use for political gain from that info? Obama was quick to blame Bush and the Republicans but Bush certainly wouldn’t need to break into the files and why would McCain’s be looked at also if it was for political purposes. It doesn’t make sense.
Posted by: pennsylvaniavoter | August 13, 2008, 5:03 am 5:03 am
When McCain was asked for his birth certificate he plopped it down on the table. Maybe if we could find anything out about Obama except what he has written about himself then maybe these kinds of things wouldn’t become an issue. Where are his senate records, where are his medical records, where is his birth certificate. Why doesn’t he allow his college friends to talk about him? Why aren’t his campaign workers allowed to talk about him? It seems to me if you were so proud of your heritage and accomplishments then it would be out there for everyone to see.

Senator Obama needs to let the press ask tough questions, he needs to have debates with McCain. If he refuses or get offended at being asked tough questions, then those of us on the fence will end up not voting for him because we don’t know his plans and ideas. I have read his plans and policies on his website. But I don’t think they are thorough enough. And he has refused (actually seems offended) when he gets questioned. Will someone check McSames’s pulse? He now doesn’t know negative from positive. And he wants his finger on the “button”?

I haven’t read through the posts. Are any McCain supporters actually defending the guy’s ludicrous assertion he hasn’t offered any negative messages?

Oh, wait, we can’t hold McCain to anything he says. Its just McCain being McCain.
Like when he says, “We are all Georgians,” it doesn’t really mean anything, right?
It doesn’t mean that McCain sees Russian actions in Georgia as an attack on the United States – the way those words would be interpreted if spoken by anyone else.

geevill: “…but voters are not concerned about President McCain.”
Granted, the conventional wisdom coming into the campaign season was that McCain was ready to become commander in chief. That conventional wisdom is rapidly evaporating.
Most voters aren’t paying attention yet. When they do, and start considering some of these many dumb statements McCain is making, then the thought of him in the Oval Office might not seem so risk free.

I read in one of the post that Europeans want obama.?!? That’s enough to make me vote for ANYBODY else.

The funny thing is that people think these boards actually have some impact. The blog articles at the top do, but the messages within are mostly meaningless.
This is just us political junkies enjoying ourselves.
So anyone pretending to be something you’re not, for what its worth my advice is not to sacrifice your integrity for this – it ain’t gonna change any votes.

Actually, I think it is. I believe I saw those labels attached to every Republican involved with that Republicans for Obama group.

Nothing negative from McCain? RIGHT
So big, bad Bush, and McCain, are totally with Georgia. (We will stand with you.We are all Georgians)and can’t do a thing…
More war, more mouth-more proof. McCain hates Russia. He will personally start World War Three.
The Republicans have made America the laughing stock of the World.
It Is time to change America.

John McCain is a tremendous lier. Every single ad that “old dude” has put up is a negative attack on Obama.
I consider myself on tbe fence in the political spectrum. I have Democratic concerns as well as Republican concerns. But, this year, I will most deffinatley vote for Obama. We as a nation cannot afford to live another 4 to 8 years in the same downward decline that we have since Bush was elected in 2000. Heck, what am I saying? McCain may not even be fit to run the nation after a year or two.
Have you ever been driving down the road and say there is a car in the fast lane going the speed limit? Say that same car has an older person driving it, say in thier late 60′s on up into thier 80′s? And havent you ever thought they need to have thier drivers license taken away from them and banned from driving? This fits into more situations than just driving in the fast lane. Once a person gets to the age in which they can collect social security, they may not be fit to drive. Now, granted McCain will be driven everywhere he goes, but dont you worry that he is the one unfit to lead this nation instead of Obama? Obama is in his prime, McCain, not so much.
Obama is running a respectable ad campaign. McCain on the other hand, ,using Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears to somehow show that Obama is an airheaded blonde chic? Isnt McCain himself a celebrity? 5 years as a POW, and decades of sitting on the Senate has made him a national celebrity in his own right. But, maybe whats missing from McCain’s campaign is the amount of people wanting to see and hear his speaches. Obama draws huge crowds because people want change, people dont want to continue this downward decline, and people dont want to be a nation always at war.
McCain promised to run a clean campaign, but now that Obama is and has been ahead of him in every single poll he has to show his real colors and start throwing the poo around like a baboon.
To be honest, I think there are just too many racist bastards out there that dont want to see an african american in office. Why is it that we can say we are the greatest nation in the world, be completely free, but yet we want to revert back to the old days when it was the white man that ruled and him only? I myself am white, always have, always will. My vote would have been for Clinton or Obama but certiantly not McCain. I would vote for Mickey Mouse or Daffy Duck before I voted for Bush’s war hungry twin.
We need change people. McCain is not change. Obama is change. If you cant figure that out on your own, maybe you need to go back to school. I was brought up knowing that yes two negatives do make a positive, but that two wrongs dont make a right. Make the right choice in November. Make the smart choice.

Is it just me ? Or is making foriegn policy presumptious and a little arrogant. Like it or not Bush is our president. Only he has the power to direct our foreign policy. Why isnt he being called arrogant for speaking out of place.
