McCain’s Ohio Rally Stokes V.P. Speculation

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is planning a major rally in Dayton, Ohio, for Friday, Aug. 29, stoking speculation on the part of the local Republican Party chairman that the Arizona senator might use that occasion to announce his running mate.

"I was told by the McCain folks that we should start building the troops," Alex M. Triantafilou, the chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party, told ABC News.

Triantafilou was asked to build the Dayton rally by a member of McCain’s Ohio staff.  The McCain staffer, whom Triantafilou described as "not a super high ranking person," did not know if the Aug. 29 event would be McCain’s vice presidential announcement.

But Triantafilou said that the timing of the event (scheduled for the day after the Democratic National Convention ends) and the location of the event (in the state that decided the 2004 election) led him and his fellow Republican Party officials to speculate whether this might be the occasion on which McCain decides to announce his running mate.

"It makes sense to do it here," said Triantafilou. "The timing seems to be the ordinary timing" for a vice presidential announcement.

The Republican National Convention is scheduled to get underway in the Twin Cities on Monday, Sept. 1, just three days after the Dayton, Ohio rally.

Some GOP strategists not working for the McCain campaign believe that announcing a running mate the day after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., gives his acceptance speech in Denver, Colo., could help dampen any momentum that Democrats have coming out of their convention.

Asked if McCain was planning to announce his running mate in Ohio on Aug. 29, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers declined to comment.

If McCain is indeed planning to announce his running mate in Ohio, Triantafilou does not see it as a "tip off as to who it is going to be."

"Ohio is a key battleground state," said Triantafilou. "The corridor that runs from Cincinnati up to Toledo — the  I-75 corridor — is very key territory for Republicans to win the state of Ohio."

Asked about prospective running mates, Triantafilou said that a "significant part of his party" would be "skeptical" if McCain were to tap former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, who supports abortion rights, despite Ridge’s comment to Fox News Sunday that it is the responsibility of the vice president to "echo" the views of the president.

"It’s a difficult question when it comes to Gov. Ridge," said Triantafilou. "There is a significant part of my party that would be skeptical of a pro-choice running mate."

"The Republican Party is going to support whomever [McCain] selects," Triantafilou added. "But I certainly know that I will get significant feedback from an important part of our party if Sen. McCain selects a pro-choice running mate."

Triantafilou said that he is rooting for a local V.P. prospect: former Rep. Rob Portman. The former director of the Office of Management and Budget and former U.S. Trade Representative used to represent a Cincinnati-based district not far from Dayton when he served in Congress.

"Portman is a gentleman and a statesman and is a brilliant person who has worked very well across the aisle," said Triantafilou. "Most Democrats would agree that he has worked every effectively across the aisle."

Triantafilou also had words of praise for Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty whom he called a "fantastic" governor of a "key state."

The party chair described Mitt Romney as "very popular" in the local business community.

Word about McCain’s Aug. 29 event first spread on Sunday when Triantatilou wrote on his blog that "Sen. McCain is expected to host a rally on August 29 in Dayton and is looking for a BIG venue and for a BIG crowd. He’ll get it. This is not yet public. I guess I just made it so."

On Monday, Justin Miller of PolitickerOH cited the Triantatilou blog entry and had an unnamed GOP source saying that McCain’s rally will draw 10,000 to the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

UPDATE:

After the PolitickerOH and ABC News stories appeared Monday morning, The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reported that Triantatilou’s reference to the event has disappeared from his blog entry.

ABC News has reached out to Triantatilou and will update this story when it hears back from the Hamilton County GOP chair.

UPDATE # 2:

ABC News’ Jan Crawford Greenburg reports: Sources close to McCain say it’s likely that the Arizona senator will announce his running mate on Aug. 29, his 72nd birthday.

But they caution that this date is not set in stone, and that McCain himself could always decide to announce at another time.

The date and place of the announcement hinge on the choice of a V.P. — a decision, sources say, that McCain has not yet finalized.

Obama/Biden in 08? Why would you want the man thrown out of the primaries first to join the ticket. You have HOPE, CHANGE and Pelosi to carry you. Obama should choose Pelosi and show his real stripes.

It seems McCain might have plagiarized the Gulag Archipelago with his “cross in the dirt” story.
The same thing happened in that book.
This itself isn’t proof it didn’t happen to McCain. But McCain seems to have been quite a Solzhenitsyn fan. When he co-authored a book about twelve tough historical decisions, one of the twelve was Solzhenitsyn’s decision to write the Gulag Archipelago.

Those bashing McCain show the political sense of a two year old. Let’s be honest…a McCain rally WOULD be effective, and selecting a running mate would dampen Obama’s speech. All Obama has done is talk, so it’s not like he will say anything new. It will just be polished and recycled talking points. So McCain would be very wise in this decision. And the person who commented about WWIII needs to rethink their blind following of an inept political newbie in Obama, who has no military leadership, no understanding of the Muslim world (contrary to claims he is a muslim haha), He has no understanding of the key elements involved in today’s world. He’s a rookie, who happens to say what people want to hear. THAT is no qualification. Heaven help us and the world if he is elected. He may be a nice guy, but he’s not a good candidate.

Common Sense – let’s talk McCain.
In his mind, are we in a state of war with Russia now?
He said we are Georgians. Russian tanks are still occupying Georgia. Is our territory being occupied?
The conventional wisdom that McCain is above reproach was shattered weeks ago. Now we’re confronted with the very real possibility this guy isn’t who we thought he was.

Looks like the race between pow john mcain and community drug user n organizer barack obama is like that of the turtle and the rabbit.
Brack is so ambitious like the rabbit of winning the race, but the turtle paced mcain will win.
here is a brewing change of tide in favor of the vietnam prisoner of war; the promise of hope of barack is so shallow that his change that we can believe in are pieces of scam and full of baloney. Nothing new, but promises that of professional politicians.

Obama has lost the election! I guess that the American people and the Clinton’s are the only ones that know this. I personally know folks who have never voted that will be voting this year, so they can vote against a Jr. senator with no leadership experience! Do not under estimate the intelligence of the American people! Go McCain, we are behind you 100%

As an Ohio independent, I believe the far left fringe are just as despicable as the people they chastise. I’m sick of these deeply partisan politics, and I am voting for the real post-partisan candidate. John McCain! Look at the facts. Listen to his response from the other night when he was asked what decisions he made that threatened his standing in his own party. They are numerous. Obama’s answers paled in comparison. What little experience he does have, none of it can truly be described as post partisan. As ironic as it may sound to some people, the truth is that John McCain bring the best kind of change that our country needs!

Are we facing a new realization that the McCain brand is nothing more than stagecraft, a fraud, phony, faked?
He tries to sound authoritative about Georgia and gets caught pulling directly from the Wikipedia article.
He tries to bolster his credentials with the religious right, and now it appears his story of a guard drawing a cross in the dirt may have been nothing more than a retelling of something from a Solzhenitsyn book.
Hmmmm.

I think that any person who votes for obama simply because he is black is as racist as you can get. obama is a liar and cannot even answer most direct questions (did you catch the ‘debate’?). He’s an empty suit and gives decent, hard working people a bad name. I hope he goes down in flames.

Posted by: Mikey | August 18, 2008, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

No, really, let’s elect a guy with 143 days in the Senate, who started his career in Chicago in the living room of two terrorists, William Ayers and Bernadine “Kill the Cops” Dorhn…and who also believes (and voted for) that infanticide is permissible, who would technically let his own daughters have abortions throughout the full 9 month term, and without his consent or even knowledge if he had his way. Taxpayer funded abortions for everyone!!
Let’s let Obama wave his magic diplomatic hand at Putin and Ahmadinejad, and all will be right with the world…….but what I am really looking forward to is a giant tax increase from Senator Obama-his “Economic Justice” is just what the country needs right now!!!
…or, you know, you could vote for a true hero who actually spilled blood for his country, while the other was doing drugs and attending a church where hating white people is a bedrock principle.
Now, like Hillary, (to quote Reverend Wrong) I’ve never been called a N–r, but I know racism when I see it, unlike “Ive never authored any legislation of significance” Obama.

hippie_chucker, are you serious?! Thoughtful answers?! and McCain’s were not?! You can’t even be fair with your opinion of the guy.
Simple test: what do you like about obama the least? If you cannot answer this question without somehow propping him up, then you are lying.

To Common Sense:
It’s funny that you would argue that John McCain is the candidate w better knowledge of the Muslim world, considering he doesn’t know the difference between Sunnis and Shia. I find it staggering that the “national security” candidate is incapable of differentiating between these two groups, since Iraq is our most pressing national security concern.
To Dan:
How is McCain offering change? In fact, he has committed himself to the continuation of the Bush administration’s ruinous policies, both domestic and foreign. If by change, you mean a continuation of the status quo and a degradation of America’s standing in the world, then, yes, McCain does offer that kind of change.

As this race goes along, Barack Obama’s sheep are looking more and more foolish. Grasping at straws, nit-picking where they can. Instead, why not focus on the issues? Maybe it’s because Obama’s don’t hold up. That’s why he backed down on his pledge to debate John McCain over the summer? Obama can read a teleprompter! He just regurgitates what is fed to him through that tv. But he has no grasp of the real issues at hand. He stand up and proclaims change! Which is easy to do, but unfortunately his plans for change are incredibly flawed. I look forward to America seeing the candidates for who they really are over the course of the next couple months. Because if they do, John McCain will be our next President

I don’t think McCain getting caught lying about his POW experiences are nit-picking, but let’s talk issues.
Usually we can’t get anyone to join the discussion, but since you’re here, let’s talk issues.
Are we Georgians? And if we are, then are we now at war with Russia?
How about that offshore drilling, which possibly might actually produce a little oil in 12-20 years. How little? So little, that it will mean less gallons of gasoline than Americans could save by properly inflating their tires. Why are you guys so into that drilling thing?

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

If McCain picks a liberal or a pro-choice running mate I can 100% guarantee I’ll not be voting for him. Not only will I not vote for him I will vote for Obama to ensure he wins. As a Christian I will NOT be dragged into the culture of death the Democrats are so proud of supporting. I will NOT have a pro-choice Republican presidential candidate in 2016 with Tom Ridge should McCain win. I’d rather take it on the chin with Obama for four years and then get a REAL conservative like we did after the utter disaster Jimmy Carter with Ronald Reagan. Maybe Bobby Jindal will be ready by then.

Quite honestly, I expect in about twenty years to see a strong debate among historians as to whether Buchanan or Bush was the worst ever.

Jim: “Just follow the money… Barack will hurt the middle class.”
Right. That’s why we should maintain the Bush tax cuts, and maybe even cut taxes further.
We shouldn’t be worried the national debt has doubled in a little over seven years.
Okay, that’s sarcastic. But honestly, are you guys willing to sacrifice the solvency of your childrens’ country just for the feel-good pandering of low taxes now?
We’ve been incredibly reckless with this debt, and I think its now the biggest national security concern we have. Even bigger than a nuclear device in the hands of a terrorist.
Think of it this way. If a terrorist detonates the nuclear bomb in Washington or New York, its certainly not our best day but the nation survives. But can we survive a currency collapse?

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

Paul you are just proving my point. Refuting John McCain’s POW experience? Not only is that ridiculous because it is impossible to be disproved, it has no impact on the future of our country. And if you like to take everything so literal, such as John McCain’s comment about Georgia, did you, as Obama says, experience a ray of light from above that shown upon you and convinced you to vote for him?
As for Oil, a real issue, you prove to be terrible misinformed. Not only will oil futures and the price of gas drop from the anticipation of higher oil supply, there are rigs off the coast of California that can be productive within 5 years. But regardless of the time frame, it proves that we need to take action now. Unfortunately for a society engrossed with instant satisfaction, this is a problem then will take time to resolve. Obama’s plan of wind and solar is unrealistic. Not to mention he opposes a bill that would allow for the survey of oil reserves. He and the democrats don’t even want Americans to know how much oil we really have.

All I know is that I am for McCain. I am a white (yes…gasp! I must be racist!) Independent voter. I consider myself fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I just believe that McCain is a better candidate. He is not afraid to go against his own party, he stands up for what he believes in. I respect that.

Posted by: Sara | August 18, 2008, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

Paul-first of all, new drilling can supply oil much sooner than 12-20 years, some in Alaska in as little as 5. But your’re right, we should definitely not provide millions of jobs and pay down the national debt through tax revenue at the same time. As you don’t know, Exxon pays $4000 a SECOND in fed. taxes!
We’re so into the “drilling thing” as you put it, because it makes sense, as born out in that old saw “Supply and Demand” that liberals are still confused on. Let the pot smoke clear, and consider this-if releasing oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserves will lower prices, as Pelosi wants,(who seemingly doesnt understand that the replacement oil must be bought and paid for, but whatever) wouldn’t bringing 100 years worth of oil do the same but also employ an idle workforce, and pay down the national debt at the same time?
Liberals are fine with countries with 10x worse environmental records than the US pumping oil, but God forbid we do it here under our much stricter laws!

Paul, do realize the bulk of our government spending goes towards welfare programs??? Even more than what goes to our defense department. Maybe instead of raising taxes for unnecessary programs, there should be a complete overhaul of the entitlement programs that are bleeding our government dry. It is the Congress currently in power that is doing it! But even if we are to raise taxes, Obama’s plan is extremely unfair. He is proposing a redistribution of wealth. And he proposes the same kind of solution to social security! He wants to turn Social Security into a welfare-like program. Not only are his proposals scary they go against basic American ideals.

It is smart for McCain to choose Ohio for a major rally. Having spent most of my life in the State, it is impossible for Obama to win here. This is the first time I have heard Democrat ward leaders telling me privately they are voting Republican in the Presidential election. I have been against Obama because he is utterly, completely devoid of qualification for the Presidency, because whenever he speaks without a teleprompter he, hems, haws and talks in circles, and because he seems so far left. However, after Saturday night’s debate, which McCain won handidly, I am now truly pro McCain. Hopefully, I’ll be able to drive down to the rally!

Posted by: MarleneOhio | August 18, 2008, 12:54 pm 12:54 pm

Darryl – “Paul, do realize the bulk of our government spending goes towards welfare programs?”
I do. Its called indiscretionary spending, because its a commitment our country has made. Breaking that commitment would be like defaulting on a loan.
The other part of the budget is called discretionary spending, because it is at the discretion of Congress as to what is and isn’t authorized and appropriated.
The lion share of discretionary spending is military. And McCain says he will balance the budget in four years – which even Republican analysts laughed at.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 12:56 pm 12:56 pm

Of the two major candidates, I will be voting for the one who truly cares about our whole country… not for the ideologue ingenuè who really only loves his own voice, says “uh” between every sentence with his nose in the air and just spews sweeping bromides. What a phony.

Posted by: Hope he loses, change we can believe will ruin our country | August 18, 2008, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

Daryl – don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see government control its own spending. But it doesn’t seem like it will ever happen, regardless of which party is in power.
We need to pay our way. If we can’t control public spending, we’d better increase government revenues.

Hippie: “We’re so into the “drilling thing” as you put it, because it makes sense, as born out in that old saw “Supply and Demand” that liberals are still confused on.”
The problem is off-shore drilling won’t significantly increase our supply. That’s the point with the tire pressure thing (which McCain continues to lie about in terms of being part of the Obama energy plan).
Properly inflated tires would lead toward more reduced demand by a factor of three than off-shore drilling would increase supply.

Obama supporters, Democrats and Independents, and my fellow Americans of sound minds keep the faith, forget about polls and remember that the only poll that matters is on election day. Obama will NOT be outplayed by the McCain Campaign. Trust me when I tell you that McCain has peaked and Obama is not showing his hand yet. The same way that Insane McCain was shot down in Vietnam because he was unprepared and unqualified to be flying that plane, he is equally unprepared and unqualified to be President of the United States. Just wait until the angry, stuttering, memory loss McCain gets shell shocked this October. McCain will finally snap and the PTSD will be readily apparent to all.

Daryl – just caught your comment about attacking McCain’s POW claims.
What I see is this crashing down of the McCain myth. He was seen as a straight-shooter, and now a new reality seems to be emerging.
McCain lying about the cross in the sand account would be significant, I think.
And it seems he did. It was in Solzhenitsyn’s book as something that happened in a Soviet gulag, and McCain himself included the writing of that book as one of his 12 tough historical decisions to review.

Paul-you’re getting your info from the left wing MSM. 12-18 months is what the oil industry says. Who knows better? Why would the “evil” oil industry wait 10 yrs to get the oil out??!! And then you & Barack Hussein Obama think that inflating the tires is 3X better than adding to oil supply? You are both delusional!
BTW – we won’t have to worry about BHO’s plans since Hillary will steal the convention and become the nominee! Better develop new Coronation plans you naive wingnuts!!

As to whether properly inflated tires would save more than drilling would produce, this was a comparison of figures put out by such ‘left wingers’ as the Bush Administration’s Dept of Energy.

John McCain has never played up his POW experiences from the past. Nor has he openly talked about his sons that serve our nation now. Nor about his daughter they adopted from Bangladesh. There were a lot of supporters who appreciate the things he has done and want more people to know about it. Maybe that’s why he mentions them now. But he certainly doesn’t go around preaching about it. Even so, Obama supporters get hostile about it because Barack is so inexperienced and self-absorbed that he can’t recount such noble qualities about himself.

So sad to see today that Obama campaign sees the writing on the wall after the decisive win by McCain Saturday night. Critics and even secretly some Dems., saw their boy fumble once again, and yet their spinning tales of McCain “cheating” because he heard a few of Nobama’s answers. Yep that was it….because I know McCain was going to mention his 96 year old mom and Cindy as two of his wisest people…..NOT. Wow desperation by the Obama camp is so unattractive.

And btw Obamabots, Gallup today shows both candidates in dead tie at 45%….and polls are always deceptive, they always show the dems a few points higher than they actually are once the election takes place. This means if history continues—–McCAin is leading. Bye-bye Obama.

Well, Tom Ridge would clearly be a competitive choice but can’t be chosen because of his pro-choice stance.
Romney would be a good choice but can’t be chosen because he is Mormon.
Huckabee would be a good choice but can’t be chosen because he preached an economic populism.
Consequently, the choice will be a less-than-first-choice candidate. Hmmmm. If you remember that’s how John McCain was selected too.

Apparently everyone that posts here is delusional… Nobama and NovoCain have not one iota of difference in the endgames of their policies: the total economic destruction of the US as we know it. One will achieve this through increased spending and taxation, along with a few (if not more) NATO-sponsored wars; the other will (thanks to his fried mind due to his ineptitude in combat) collapse us with war after war after war with little if any cutbacks in spending besides a few couple hundred dollar memorial day rebate checks. Despite McCain’s regularly doning Navy ballcaps, posing as a TOP GUN ala Tom Cruise, all evidence illustrates that McCain was a terrible pilot, destroyed numerous military aircraft, was a legacy admission to the Naval Academy and nearly flunked out graduating 894th out of 899) where he spent more of his time behind a bar stool at strip clubs, than studying and preparing to become a proficient pilot. McCain was more enamored with the title and the trappings of being a ‘Naval Aviator’ than preparing to be a proficient one. This was likely the reason he was shot down in Vietnam. Likewise McCain has been consumed with becoming President for the better part of 25 years but clearly is unprepared now. He admits to knowing nothing about the economy or how to use the internet and needs surrogates to log him on. To quote Wesley Clark, “Well, I don’t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president.” Exactly my point, why does screwing and having a lack of intellectuial curiousity up essentially make one a hero? Tell you what, maybe the Naval Academy can give us someone who graduated in the Top 500 of the class rather than a guy who was 894th out of 899.

Everyone needs to crank their passion down a little and their brains up a little more. BO is the far left choice who will give us more govt., more taxes and because of being part of the far left, doesn’t want to develop our own home grown entergy unless it’s totally green and costs all of us through the nose. McCain is middle right, and not a true follower of Bush. He now wants to drill, and expand nuclear, even when he didn’t before, because he knows it’s what the people want, and when we start the price will start the drop even more on gas. Mc. Has experience and I’ll take that any day over 143 days in the Senate before someone runs for President. We can’t afford to have a far left Congress, and a far left President. Our wallets can’t take it. Look at Denmark, France Etc. and how much of their income goes to the govt. We all would like to have all of these great programs, but in a country of 300 million we just can’t afford everything, and it doesn’t hold water when the far left says if we didn’t spend all of this money on the war we would have the money. No we wouldn’t, and we would be a weaker nation. One prime for another attack. Just do the math and you’ll see that the dollars don’t add up. BO can talk about all of the change that he wants, but I’m old enough to have heard it all before. So to all of you young voters, please vote with your brains and if you still want to vote for BO so be it, but at least be informed. Don’t count on any change however because once in washington he’ll be told what can and cannot be done, and if upsetts Congress they will turn on him in a heartbeat even if they are the same party, and nothing will get done as always.
Vote with your brains.

This race reminds me of the fable about the tortoise and the hare. I’d love to see it a depiction in a political cartoon. McCain was very impressive on Saturday night. Having been a democrat most of my life, I’ve never paid much attention to him. The more I see and hear him, the more I think he’d make a good president. I don’t agree with him on every issue, but then I don’t agree with the democrats on every issue either. McCain would be wise to pick a female conservative as his running mate.

War, corruption, pollution, and destruction of the American middle class are not good ideas, and that’s what John McCain is running on…these are the exact same policies of the conservative agenda that George W. Bush implemented over the last 8 years of detrimental and immoral actions by the Republican Party.
The Bush Administration and the rubber stamp Republican Congress accomplished nothing to strengthen moral family values. Instead, the Republicans employed an all out attack against the American working middle class, started an unnecessary and immoral war, and increased the national deficit while giving tax breaks to the wealthy.
Americans can’t afford another Republican Administration.

To Larry Clifton who says Obama is leading and has always lead. Well, RealClearPolitics has McCain ahead in the key battle states. Also, 2 weeks ago, Obama had a project 100+ point lead in EV’s. Today, he barely has 60. The trend has been that Obama’s numbers are dropping and McCain’s are rising. I haven’t checked Gallup today.

Posted by: MrsC | August 18, 2008, 3:17 pm 3:17 pm

Truth: Obama’s trying to do the “SNEAKY SOCIALIST” thing on Americans, who do not want socialism, but as a student of Allinsky whom Obama praises rabidly, the whole agenda is to convert desperation into willingness for blank-check change (into socialism). This is why the Democrats (aka Socialist party) want Americans to become desperate over energy costs, so “THEY” can take over as Maxine Waters blurted out, to socialize energy—which was the first thing that creep Hugo Chavez socialized, then farms, ranches, media, and now he’s using his civilian military (which Obama also said he wants) to crack down on the populous who are rebelling against their losses of freedoms. Americans hate socialism, so Obama and his ilk have to SNEAK it upon us, which is why he cannot give any straight answers.

Regarding the oil drilling discussion above: I read that both Obama AND Mccain are against drilling in ANWAR. Mccain flipped his position on drilling off-shore in the coastal areas when it became politically expedient to do so. And remember, any oil we may eventually get from off-shore drilling will go into the world market. It will NOT be earmarked for US consumption only. It will have a very small effect on the overall world-wide oil supply, and hence it will have a very small impact on the price of gas ‘at the pump’…..

Posted by: SearamblerOne | August 18, 2008, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

OOPs, Larry, I am wrong. Real Clear Politics shows MCCAIN LEADING IN EVs-
274 to 259 for Sen. Obama. Gallup has
Sen. Obama up by 3%, which is the biggest lead he has had in weeks. It’s not a mandate for either candidate and Obama’s MILLIONS$$$$ (not counting the money the FEC is already questioning) cannot BUY the election.

Posted by: MrsC | August 18, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

searamblerone: Bush’s lifting the executive ban on offshore drilling made oil prices drop, the prices are based on the mere threat of supply and demand, and oil is a world commodity, it will affect our prices no matter. It’s a necessary bridge to 100% alternatives, so we can survive until one day the Arabs will be swimming in their own unsellable oil. This scare has been too drastic, we are on course to 100% alternatives forever, but it will take some time to get there.

Posted by: alan | August 18, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

hfp, with all due respect, there are experts on both sides of the oil price issue who disagree on whether or not Bush’s lifting of the moratorium did, in fact, cause a lowering of oil prices or not. Some believe it did, others believe it was other factors (like lower US demand) which caused the lower prices. Regardless of who is right, I personally believe we should explore all our options for oil in ANWAR and the coastal regions. My problem with Mccain is his mantra of ‘drill here, drill now’ seems to be a calculated political ploy, since most experts agree that it will not affect our oil supply or gas prices for many years. Yet he touts this idea as one that will give us all immediate and substantial relief at the pump. It won’t, and I feel he knows it, yet he keeps saying it.

Posted by: Walt | August 18, 2008, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

Why did McCain do so well at Saddleback?
Simple – he has years of experience, he possesses core beliefs that do not have to be rehearshed or researched – he knows what he believes. Obama – takes his marching orders from the far left and has no reservoir of experience to draw upon – it is eh, eh, eh, ah, ah, ah, ach, ach, bu, bu – until the answer is telegraphed via the socialist satellite. No experience, wrong decisions in his short political life, lots of baggage and lots of crowds to hear the Messiah speak from a teleprompter. PLEEEEZE – give “we the people a break” – we are not idiots.
John McCain has the personal and political history to be a great President. Don’t worry your little liberal heads about the “small” crowds -ever heard of the silent majority.

Ron, Actually, Obama stated that he “cheated” during the forum Saturday. He got 3 questions in advance compared to McCain who got 2 in advance. This is a fact. If you are a Christian, then how can you support a man who sat in a church that preached hatred and blamed America for everything; Aids,9/11, war in Iraq/Afgahnistan? Remember, do not take the Lord’s Name in vain? That church must not read the Bible a lot. He sat on the IL State Sen. seat and voted against allowing newborns to get a fighting chance after a late abortion? Why would you support a man who socialists beliefs does not coorelate between the beliefs of our founding fathers? Why would you support a man who befriends people like Rev. Wright and William Ayers and others? Why would you be supportive of a party that doesn’t want us to be independant of oil but continue the revenues to be sent to rogue nations? Why would you be supportive of a man who blames America and says evil should be delt with humility? That WE deliver evil by trying to help others in the world? Please, you must have seen a different forum than I did.

Obama unmasked – without a teleprompter – has to think on his feet and all he can manage is rehashed talking points and vague generalities. The truth of the empty suit is now being seen by EVERYONE. He is completely out of his league. A rookie who hasn’t even served long in the farm system. My God, what are the democrats thinking? This guy is toast, guaranteed.

0,
I’m bi-racial, female, between the ages of 18-45 yrs, and I will be voting for Mccain this November. I’m not white and I’m not racist. Please don’t assume I’m white or racist because I support John Mccain. Voting for John Mccain does not make you a racist and I hate how the Obama supporters paint Mccain supporters as racist. I am so sick of it! I got threatened and was painted a racist for having a Mccain bumper sticker on my car! I had it removed. Obama bullies lay off! I hope our government does not degrade to that of some third world country where bullying people is the only way to run a country. Supporting John Mccain does NOT make you racist but tells you that you’re not a media lemming. Vote John Mccain because you can think for yourself!

T, I’M not the one who says this, the oil and economic experts who study these things for a living say this. I have not seen or heard anyone who claims that the oil we may eventually get from ANWAR or the coastal regions would be sold exclusively to the US for US refining and consumption. Everything I’ve read indicates it will be sold on the world market at the best price the producers can get. As for how much will oil cost in 10 years? Maybe we should ask the speculators and the dealers in oil futures…..

I’ve gone from wildly enthusiastic Obama supporter to someone who’ll vote for him reluctantly. Why? Because the more I see and hear, the more worried I am that he’s not ready for the job. By all measures, I should have known this from the start, but I let myself get carried away with the idea that he was smart enough to make up for his short resume. His reaction to the Russian invasion of Georgia crystallized all of my fears. His initially reaction was exactly the kind of “a pox on both sides” rhetoric that has historically emboldened militaristic regimes like Russia. It took him about a day and half to adopt McCain’s message on Russia. Frankly, it was a frightening turnaround and exactly what you’d expect from someone who hasn’t been hardened life’s realities. I’m worried that he’s going to project just enough naivete to get us all in real trouble on the world stage. I hoping beyond hope that he (1) picks a solid foreign policy expert for the ticket — and someone with plenty of gray hairs earned from international crises; and (2) he starts showing a dollop more of humility consistent with his need to learn a whole bunch of things on the fly. I’m praying it’s Colin Powell or someone like him (maybe Sam Nunn) and not some hack like Joe Biden.

In historically unusual fashion, I’m predicting McCain will drop in the polls after he announces his running mate and partakes in the RNC. Any reminder that McCain is a Republican is going to hurt him. McCain would surely rather cancel the RNC, have no one in his party speak on his behalf and run by himself. He’d have a better shot.

Let the democrats talk their sleaze. They are the ones that want Obama to be their leader so he will tell them it’s alright to kill little innocent babys. The democratic party has been feeding these people lies for over 40 years. Don’t forget they believed Bill Clinton and we tried to tell them, but they wouldn’t listen. They are so dumb, they can’t see how the democrat party has manipulated them and made them beg like dogs all these years. I have come to the decision that they would vote for a candidate and put America in danger just to get a flat screen television. Their buddies already have a song out to kill O’Reilly. Jeremiah Wright has also taught them well. They were drinking milk out of a bottle when Wright was telling them DAMN America. Well our enemies overseas teach DAMN America too. John McCain and his wife has done so much for this country already. All anyone has to do is look up his biography, but they are too dumb to do that. Obama goes over to Europe and tells the rest of the world Americans are stupid, but they still don’t get it. Obama would rather kill little innocent babies to get their vote than to take care of the least of his breathen. Hope he gets them a flat screen tv so they will know when a big nuke is headed our way, because it will take Obama 20 years to figure out how to stop a nuke just like it took him to figure out what Jeremiah Wright was preaching. We don’t have 20 years. Our enemies want us dead now. There are a lot of good people in this country. Thousands of them are overseas right now risking their lives for you and me. There will be many good people at McCain’s gathering. Democrats can’t see this because they are more concerned about what size tv they might get. Hopefully the democrats learn how to beg and wag their tails because Hillary just might get the nomination. Wouldn’t that be something. If Obama had never been in the picture, wonder if they would have voted for Edwards or Hillary. We’ll never know because they aren’t voting for a good leader, they are voting to see what somebody can get them. Just don’t forget that while you are watching your new television and letting little babies die our service men and women are still overseas trying to protect us from our enemies and our enemies don’t care who we are. They want all Americans dead.

Obama is going to announce his VP pick hoping it will kill this attention on his sorry truth-telling performance Saturday night. His whole candidacy has been followed by a pooper-scooper, usually the lib media, picking up the turds he’s dropped along the way. How are they going to manage that if he’s elected? Can America really be so stupid to put this empty suit who is neither black, nor white. He lived with a white woman for a year before he married Michelle. If I were black he would be an insult to me. Why haven’t they put a real black up for election? Does anybody on this board know many blacks who talk like him? They threw their slaves, Jesse and Al under the bus for this zebra because they are the real racist. At least, President Bush put real blacks in high positions. Even they are so racially biased, they will probably vote for Nobama because race is thicker than brains. I hope they get what they ask for and God help America.

If democrats perform sex like they fight wars it is no wonder they are so angry and frustrated all the time.
Funny isn’t it how in just a couple of months, since it has become overwhelmingly obvious that the Bush/McCain surge is working, that the war doesn’t matter to dems anymore.
Now the dollar is strengthening and oil is dropping. The economy suddenly doesn’t look as dire as the pro-Obama media has made it look. So the dems will see something else that is politically shiny and their attention will go somewhere else.
All the while they will spew their words of hateful rage about how Republicans/Conservatives are “racists, sexists, bigots and homophobes” (to quote Rush) when all the while it is they that see race/sex/creed before they see an individual.
It couldn’t possibly be that we oppose Obama because his speeches are vapid, his policies stupid and his experience pitiful.

As I looked through the earlier posts, it became clear that many liberals seem to be home during the day or are engaging in a little white collar crime by utilizing their employer’s computers for their own personal needs. If it is the former, then take my advice – GET OUT OF YOUR PARENT’S BASEMENTS AND GET A JOB. At 5.7% unemployment (CONSIDERED FULL EMPLOYMENT UNDER CLINTON) there are still jobs out there. Of course if you start working, your hero, Sen. Obama, will be taxing you like he plans to do the rest of us. (That is, if the small businesses who hire you can still afford you after their taxes are raised – small businesses have to count business income as personal income). That might wake you up, but by then the nightmare will be real. I was a teen during the Carter years…I remember 20% interest rates for homes. Obama’s plans will destroy this country economically. Socialism was tried and failed. Too bad Sen. Obama hasn’t checked out Wikipedia himself. Maybe he could learn some history before he makes this country history.

What I do not get about this election cycle is why Obama is so popular? His ideas are nothing new, almost a copy paste from Hillary’s campaign (minor differences). This is the same message the democrats have offered for years(add hope and change a few times). No intellectually exciting ideas, nothing new. So what makes him so popular? He delivers a good podium speach and he is half black. I sort of like him, but don’t see anything even remotely exciting about his ideas for the country.

Governor Romney won’t be VP – polls say he will tank the ticket.
“…McCain campaign insiders say that while it’s true they have polled Romney on the bottom of the ticket, the data confirms that such a move would be a political disaster for the party.
‘Mitt tanks the ticket,’ says a McCain insider. ‘We lose fiscal conservatives. We lose social conservatives. We lose Catholics. We lose evangelicals. All the groups were spending time and money on bringing into the camp would be lost. He just doesn’t help us enough to do something like this, as much as Mitt might think we should. He doesn’t even win us Massachusetts.’”

If McCain picks Romney as his running mate, I will still support him for president, but I will be deeply disappointed with him. Why? Because as republicans, we expect a VP who’s conservative credentials are undoubted and undeniable.
Governor Romney used to be classified as a definite RINO. Now he tries to make himself look like a second Reagan. If this change is genuine, I couldn’t be happier. But I need time and evidence to show me he’s not faking it.
Here is an old campaign ad from when Romney ran for office in Massachusetts:
http://njmccain.blogspot.com/2007/10/romney-im-not-trying-to-return-to.html
Here are some of Romney’s various inconsistencies:
ABORTION
From the Left:
Romney ran against Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1994. During a debate, Romney declared: “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”
- Boston Globe, March 2, 2006
“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose.”
-2002 Questionnaire for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL)
Boston Globe, July 3, 2005
From the Right:
“I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate.”
- Boston Globe, Op-Ed, July 26, 2005
More from the Right:
“Every decision I have made as Governor in a very liberal state has been on the side of favoring life.” – Governor Romney
- Robert Behre, “Romney Gets S.C. Support,” Charleston Post-Courier, January 30, 2007
GAY RIGHTS
From the Left:
“All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual orientation. While he does not support gay marriage, Mitt Romney believes domestic partnership status should be recognized in a way that includes the potential for health benefits and rights of survivorship.”
- Romney’s 2002 campaign website
“Mitt and Kerry Wish You a Great Pride Weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference”
- A flier handed out at “Gay Pride” by the Romney/Healey Campaign
“We have discussed a number of important issues such as the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which I have agreed to co-sponsor, and if possible broaden to include housing and credit, and a bill to create a federal panel to find ways to reduce gay and lesbian youth suicide, which I also support. One issue I want to clarify concerns [grammar in context] President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share…”
- Governor Romney letter to Log Cabin Republicans, October 6, 1994 Read the letter
From the Right:
Lopez: “And what about the 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Republicans where you indicated you would support the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and seemed open to changing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the military? Are those your positions today?
Gov. Romney: “No. I don’t see the need for new or special legislation. My experience over the past several years as governor has convinced me that ENDA would be an overly broad law that would open a litigation floodgate and unfairly penalize employers at the hands of activist judges…As for military policy and the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, I trust the counsel of those in uniform who have set these policies over a dozen years ago. I agree with President Bush’s decision to maintain this policy and I would do the same.”
- Interview with National Review, December 14, 2006 Read the interview
MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
From the Left:
In 2002, before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declared same-sex marriage protected by the Constitution, Romney denounced as “too extreme” the effort by pro-family groups to enact a preemptive state Marriage Protection Amendment prohibiting homosexual marriage, civil unions and same-sex public employee benefits.
- Boston Phoenix, May 14-20, 2004
From the Right:
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough: “Do you support a national constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage?”
Governor Romney: “Boy, I sure do. You know, that’s a topic that’s really, I think, very important to the country because marriage is not just about adults. Marriage is about the development and nurturing of kids, and in my view, the development of a child is enhanced by having a mom and dad. And so, I think it’s very important that we have a national standard because marriage is a status. You get married in one place and then you move to another, you’re still married at least in the eyes of the community and the children and the benefits may not follow you, but ultimately we’re going to have one standard of marriage in this country and that standard ought to be one man and one woman.”
- MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” September 17, 2007
GUN RIGHTS
From the Left:
“He [Romney] is a supporter of the federal assault weapons ban.”
- Romney 2002 campaign website
More from the Left:
In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons.
“That’s not going to make me the hero of the NRA,” Romney told the Boston Herald in 1994.
At another campaign stop that year, he told reporters: “I don’t line up with the NRA.”
- Boston Globe, January 14, 2007 Read the article
From the Right:
“Americans should have the right to own and possess firearms as guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution,” said Governor Romney. “I’m proud to be among the many decent, law-abiding men and women who safely use firearms.”
- Governor Romney, News Release, January 12, 2007

Hey .o
You’re an idiot who doesn’t know the facts. McCain HAS indeed lead Obama in the polls. Before Obama clinched the nomination McCain lead him steadily. Obama got a bounce after that, and since then they’ve been essentially tied with McCain being up by one and Obama being up by a couple. They are in a statistical dead heat.
As for your comment about “racist white America”, you being the idiot you are don’t seem to realize that white America believed Obama could win before black America did. It wasn’t till he clinched the caucus in 99% white Iowa that blacks began to abandoned the Hildabeat and to support Obama. Sounds like YOU are the racist to me.
Either way your boy is going down hard in November. If he hasn’t been able to pull ahead by now he never will. That’s why he backed out of the town hall format debates with McCain. He knows he’ll never be able to compete. Get those kleenex ready. You’ll be crying in November, and I’ll be laughing (at YOU!)

Obama lost the election the other night when he was completely unable to define when a human life gets rights – he said, “that’s above my pay grade.” Huh? What a devastating answer and one that wonderfully defines the absolute absence of a moral compass or principle. You can be for abortion, or against it – but you can’t say…hmm, I’m not really sure.

Posted by: Big T | August 18, 2008, 11:42 pm 11:42 pm

Big T:
You’re absolutely right. Obama’s absurd stance on abortion alone is enough to convince me NEVER to vote for him.
How can he face the prospect of the murder of millions of babies, and calmly say, in essence, “it’s not for me to decide”? How disgusting!

As for the Berlin event – I have a friend currently in Germany – the only reason so many people turned out – was the free Concert, cheap beer and cheap food – they were not there for OBAMA – and at the gate OBAMA folks were handing out signs and T-Shirts to anyone who wanted them. So much for not campaigning in Germany – did Obama think – the Germans can vote – I mean being from Illinois I know – he knows – that those in Chicago vote three or four times, so why not let the Germans vote tooo….

Obama has done absolutely noting for the state of Illinois and he will do even less for America. You see – he only became a Senator in order to run for President – and he only wants to be President – because he wants to take over the world. And in his imaginary world he can do it – because ABC, NBC, CBS and the East Coast and West Coast all love him – and oh the illegals love him too – - – but heartland AMERICA knows better.. We’ll see what happens in November…

We should be considering now that we will be in a state of war…the time to prepare and/or prevent a war is before the war actually starts. Any weakness or unpreparedness such as Obama the dummy pushes only paints a great big bullseye on the US. The difference the knowledge and planning abilities of Obama and McCain is very very striking—–McCain has a clue and Obama couldn’t figure out how to get himself out of a wet paper bag.

I am 60 years old and I have never seen such an unqualified person make it so far in the presidential race. Actually Hillary Clinton would be a far superior President than Barak Obama and I can hardly stand to mention her or her husband’s name.
Mr. Obama is not only an empty suit, Mr. Putin will spank him and send him home to grandma if he gets elected. If any of you can remember the Carter administration get ready to repeat it doubly so. If you are too young to remember the Carter administration you better read up for what is to come if Mr. Obama gets elected.
McCain is the only sensible person to occupy the Whitehouse for the next 4 years, but as Carter is proof, America doesn’t always do the sensible thing. Don’t say I didn’t warn you Mr. and Mrs. and Ms America!

Posted by: Mark From Augusta | August 19, 2008, 12:14 am 12:14 am

actually, i do remember the carter administration. i have been a registered republican for almost 40 years, and will be voting for barack obama come fall. i feel that the environment is a key issue in this election, and mccain does nothing more than use drilling as the central method of reducing gas prices (hint: drilling doesnt do much unless you have 10 years to kill). the rest of his energy policy is just words in a speech, because we all know that oil companies have powerful lobbyists – maybe this is why he supports a gas tax holiday?
more drilling, more oil company profits, and the same energy policy as the bush administration will further set back the united states in the world. we will continue to lose the respect, admiration, and support of other countries under mccain. the environment is not the only reason i am voting obama. mccain is empty when it comes to changes to our education system. he is also so detached from the needs of the people that he will never, ever identify with the real america. tax cuts for the rich dont help the poor!
obamas plans, which i have read online, are far more comprehensive and structured. they are logical, can be fully funded, and will bring america back up to where it was before our current abomination of a president took office in what many other countries might call a coup.
dont attack obama for being a good orator. read his policies, because honestly, they arent stated very well in his speeches. read them; you will be very impressed and inclined to vote for him. obama is far more qualified, even with less experience, to be the president of the united states.
one more thing. cindy mccain constantly states that she is an only child. actually, she has a half sister who she tries to hide. when a relative died and this half sister was left with nothing, cindy took her rather large fortune of an inheritance and ignored the needs of her impoverished, ailing family. john mccain supported her actions. do you really want this man as your president?

You people are hilarious. Let’s check the FACTS:
Democrats were referred to under Lincoln’s presidency as SLAVEOCRATS for their pro-slavery stance.
Fact:
Republicans formed in Wisconsin in 1845 To fight democrats and their wrongful support of slavery.
EVERY DEMOCRAT IN OFFICE VOTED AGAINST THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION.
EVERY DEMOCRAT IN OFFICE VOTED AGAINST THE 14TH AMENDMENT (due process regardless of race, creed, or color).
Fact:
Booker T. Washington was invited to dine with Republican President Teddy Roosevelt and DEMOCRATS took out newspaper ads decrying the mix as an “ATROCITY.”
Fact: NEARLY EVERY DEMOCRAT IN OFFICE OPPOSED WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE- IN FACT! Every woman suffragist was a Republican, including Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony, who bragged she voted “a straight ticket- Republican!”
Two african american republican suffragists, Ida Wells and Mary Terrell, co-founded the NAACP.
FACT: A California Republican, Aaron Sargent, proposed the Susan B. Anthony Amendment in 1918 but it didn’t become law until 1920! WHY? Democrats voted it down repeatedly.
FACT: The democrats created the militant hate group the KU KLUX KLAN and they hunted and killed most Republican activists. The party was nearly destroyed for championing individual freedom.
Fact:
Republicans led the integration of pro sports. Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a Republican businessman who hired his fellow Republican, Jackie Robinson. Together they integrated Major League Baseball when Jackie Robinson took the field in 1947 for his first game. In addition to being a great athlete, a great Dodger, and a great American, Jackie Robinson was a great Republican — and a very outspoken one.
Fact:
In Brown Vs Board Of Education (what most people think of as the modern civil rights movement) it was Earl Warren, a REPUBLICAN appointed supreme court justice put in place by Eisenhower, who wrote the majority opinion.
Fact:
Three years after Brown, President Eisenhower won passage of his landmark Civil Rights Act of 1957. Now remember, the nation had just ended a long stretch of Democratic administrations –nearly four terms of FDR, and seven years of Truman — and yet there had been no civil rights legislation at all. In fact, the Republican Civil Rights Act of 1957 was the first U.S. civil rights legislation in eight decades.
Fact:
U.S. Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois, authored and introduced the 1960 Civil Rights Act. It was also he who was most responsible — more than any other individual — for the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. As Republican Leader in the Senate, even though his party was in the minority, Dirksen crafted the strategy that overcame long odds and tenacious Democratic opposition.
The Democrats weren’t just internally conflicted about the 1964 Civil Rights Act; a significant number of them actually filibustered it — preventing an up or down vote on the bill. Eventually, however — thanks to Dirksen’s leadership — this landmark legislation did get the vote it deserved. As with all of the previous civil rights legislation in our nation’s history, it passed with significantly more support from Republicans than from Democrats. The same was true for the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which became law the following year.
FACT:
Today, our nation is carrying the torch of freedom to oppressed people across the globe. President Bush and the Republican Party have led America to throw off the “chains of oppression” in Afghanistan, and to free millions of women from the shackles of Taliban rule. Afghan women can now vote; they can go to school; they can practice their professions; and women are no longer required to be fully covered from head to toe when in public. In response to this American victory for human rights, Michael Moore, John Kerry, and John Edwards have only criticism.
President Bush and the Republican Party have led America to liberate Iraq, freeing more than 24 million people from a brutal, murderous dictator who piled more than 400,000 men, women, and children in mass graves — and who killed more than one million of his fellow citizens. Iraqi men and women are now building their own democracy, as a free people. But John Kerry, Michael Moore, and John Edwards say that spreading democracy in the Middle East is a fool’s errand unworthy of America.
Republicans disagree, as we have for 150 years. We believe that governments have no right to enslave people, and that our own liberties are at risk when racists, theocrats, terrorists, and murderers go unpunished and unchecked. That is why, in the end, our Republican commitment to civil rights and individual freedom undergirds our policies of limited government and peace through strength.

your facts, although correct, are skewed. you are obviously not fully informed in your history. the democrats of old are actually what you would consider repbulicans today. this is why the entire south and midwest voted democrat in the 1800s.
after lincoln, there was a shift. lincoln’s policies are more democratic than republican, if you were to actually compare the two instead of spit out some facts from wikipedia

PS. 400,000 dead civilians over a 20 year regime is nothing compared to the destabilized iraq we now have, with estimates of between 500,000 and 2 MILLION dead civilians as a result of american presence in iraq
graze, my young sheep. follow your leader. do as your told. get nowhere.

Posted by: random republican | August 19, 2008, 1:04 am 1:04 am

They are in fact not skewed. History books today paint Lincoln not as a democrat reversed in name alone, but as a man rising above politics.
This is skewed. It was a deeply political movement, and Lincoln stated the our parties intent aptly:“to lift the artificial weights from all shoulders, and clear the paths of laudable pursuit for all.”
His use of the word “pursuit” recalls Thomas Jefferson’s words in the Declaration of Independence. Just as America’s founding document declared our right to pursue happiness, the Republican philosophy has always been focused on opportunity — not equality of outcome, but equality of opportunity. The “artificial weight” that Lincoln is talking about is, of course, the weight of the state with socialism being one form.
In the most egregious form of statism, the government imposed slavery on millions of Americans.
With every other implicit action democrats have gone in other directions, and the name game certainly can’t apply to generation leading from the suffragists up through 1964.
In 1964 the democrats were in the same mould of today.
It was John F Kennedy who was the first President to PROVE that cutting taxes raises revenue, and he did so over his party’s vapid criticism and will.
From Unions to the New Deal to the Great Expansion democrats have always proven their will, and it is readily available information (the wiki comment is simply insulting, friend).
Today they use new buzzwords like ‘global warming’ and the culture of fear ‘the rich against the poor’ but again, it amounts to the same difference in philosophy- democrats want to control the populace through expanded government, and regulating airwaves and stomping the majority religion (much like China or Russia’s perceived threat from that part of society).
Republicans want limited government, and should, as McCain does, advocate limited spending.
The end result, as true patriots such as John F. Kennedy and the republican party realized was just as Lincoln voiced so poignantly before:
NOT EQUAL OUTCOME, BUT EQUAL OPPORTUNITY.
No other political force on the planet has been more instrumental to freedom than the Republican Party. There has never been any competition even.

As Dr. Cox would sing, you are “WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.
Apparently you don’t understand the philosophical rules when engaging in feats of logic and reason. You see, Saddam Hussein started the war, not America. If but once he had, oh, not shot at our pilots in the UN no-fly zone, or not tortured those shot down. Suppose if even ONCE he complied with his own signed surrender protocols and actually cooperated with UN inspectors! Or even, dare I mention, the three offers of amnesty.
You claim to see sheep when you don’t even know where to place blame. What a sad day for your parents? Or should I just resort to your highly academic approach and say “keep drinking the kool-aid?”
This is merely anti-american hate-america-first games in semantics. And it’s far less sophisticated than the misinformation effort your putting forth. How nice to be a liberal pretending to be a republican and just answer each fact presented with “BUT STILL. . .” or “YOU SUCK.”
If you had any idea of what peace actually entails you would see our presence in Iraq as a powerful bastion.
And don’t worry, America’s figured you guys out. We know that if america is defeated as you hope (despite the irony of the opposite happening as we speak!) it would be good for democrats.
Your motives remain as disgusting as always, but what do you expect from the slaveocrats?
“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The depraved state of moral and patriotic feelings which believe nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight and die, nothing more valuable than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature who will never be free unless made and kept so by the efforts of better men.”
John Stuart Mill

McCain has trouble getting 10000 people at one time to show up to one of his rally’s because his supporters actually work. Obama has no problem getting all the democrap liberals who love living off the people who actually work in this country. They have all the time in the world to go to an Osama rally

Where do you get your facts? those are outrageous lies. Our presence in Iraq resulted in 500k to 2mil dead? That is a total lie. Follow your liberal biased America hating websites, the rest of us will believe the facts. You act as if the American soldiers were doing the killing. Most of the civilian deaths had nothing to do with America and everything to do with infighting in Islam. You need to get a grip and take a look at reality

That working argument is a good point.
Also- only one poll is consistently accurate over a general election cycle and that is the ‘LIKELY VOTER’ research.
McCain leads by 4-8% in polls of those likely to actually cast a vote.
College students and the poor are terrible voting blocs. A whopping 14- 18% of each will cast a ballot.
African Americans fare better- 37% of those in the bloc will vote.
The Jewish and middle income brackets show up in great numbers, and senior citizens are in record numbers this year, with both polling in large favor of McCain.
This is important- Jewish voters normally vote democratically (60% of those who vote) but republicans are dipping into that heavily at the moment.
Combat Veterans (who now are also in record numbers) are among likely voters, and they also vote overwhelmingly republican, and so far democrats haven’t made any gains.
If Obama hopes to win he must ensure a monumental get out the vote campaign, and somehow convince people who love to register but never make it to the polls to go on his behalf.
After all of his media attention, and successful campaign efforts abroad and at home he should be crushing John McCain- the fact that he isn’t is why delegates are voicing more support for Hillary given the upcoming convention.
Dean and the screamin’ donkeys are wringing their hands, and strategists are plying for more expertise and manpower to fill these gaps.
The candidate is losing steam.
Likely voters look at substance, and not empty promises of hope.

Posted by: E Simon | August 19, 2008, 1:59 am 1:59 am

It is August and we are in the summer doledrums. The polls don’t mean much at this time and never have. After both conventions are over the fight begins.
[those wiley republicans do anything to get elected]
And there is an exception to that, doing what ever it takes to win? It’s called politics.

Kevin
Yet you probably embraced the likes of Gary Hart, Bill Clinton, and my state’s favorite Son, John Edwards as good, christian upstanding persons to vote for huh? We know John McCain admitted the failure of his first marriage. Alot of factors go into that. Do you know all the factors? Can you cast the first stone then? I know I can’t! With Clinton, we were told over and over, it’s not about character or there personal life, it’s private. Now the shoes on the other foot and you don’t like it do you?

Lloyd wrote: “Do not under estimate the intelligence of the American people! Go McCain, we are behind you 100%”
And we shouldn’t “misunderestimate” them either. (word used by the Bush himself in reference to Bin Laden) Thanks for 8 incredible years of Bush, all you “intelligent” American people. You really done good. Here’s hoping clearer minds prevail in ’08 against McBush.

I would rather have four more years of Bush – then just one year of Obama – I’m from Chicago – and that man is a total waste as a Senator – he has done nothing for my state, or for me. Bush may not be the greatest president – that would be Reagan – but Obama is totally worthless -
Let’s see – who will vote for Obama – The poor who want a Free Hand out -
who doesn’t want to go to school,
who doesn’t want to work, who wants the taxpayer to pay for everything.
Those who just think Voting along Party lines is what you must do – those without a brain to look at the issues and determine for themselves who is the better person.
I am an American – I’m not Republican, I’m not Democrate – I look at each person, check each issue, then decide who to vote for.
What is so hard about doing that.
Open your eyes America – troubles coming …

Well, apparently Ridge is out of the running as his VP. Seems the RNC told him not to run with a pro-choice running mate. Mr. Maverick, of course, agreed…..

Posted by: SearamblerOne | August 19, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

Let’s face it, McCain is locked into a pro-baby running mate at this point after uncategorically stating at the Saddleback Church event that life begins at “the moment of inception”. I hope Mr. McCain had his staff closely study the demographics of potential voters here – he’s going to pick up the Evangelicals but lose a lot of single women voters.

Wonder why his name hasn’t come up.
The Economist called Sam “The Wilberforce Republican”
The New York Times declared that he is “one of the most conservative, religious, fascinating — and, in many ways, admirable — politicians in America today.”
Sounds like a Good VICE PREZ to Me.

Posted by: Face in a Crowd | August 19, 2008, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

When I select a president, I look for the person who is capable and stands strong with leadership and won’t back down or change his mind or tune for different audiences. I look for someone with proven experience and who has supporters who understand the economy. McCain’s statement was stronger and more a deterrent against the Russian’s encroachment against the country of Georgia. McCain is clear and consistent on issues that matter. He is not a sandbagger and a showman, like his DNC opponent. McCain is more moderate and more closely represents the majority of Americans who sacrifice for their country and believe in its glory and freedom. I agree we are ready for a change in leadership, but let’s not get carried away by swinging the political pendulum from Bush to the farthest left liberal DNC candidate, like the Carter presidency once was or worse yet to come. Certainly, the DNC candidate has some admirable personal qualities, such as his wanting to help the poor and downtrodden communities, although based on past results, Arizona is far more progressive than Illinois and in better shape economically. I think most would agree they’d rather have Arizona’s economy and schools than the problems and troubles of Illinois. John McCain will bring his leadership to the whitehouse and improve things more for all states and citizens. Consider the most probable outcome and worst case risks scenario before you vote for someone who hasn’t shown that they can walk the talk.

A more concise rebuttal to the “I want change to change the change that should be changed” Obama argument:
Jimmy. Carter.

Obama should never be president, but if people don’t work hard for McCain he will be. Put your money where your mouth is, be willing to get out and work hard to get McCain elected. He needs every single vote he can garner. Get involved in your local area, put a sign in your yard, do whatever you can. The America we know and love is worth it, isn’t it?

Never has our country been more unifed and divided. Never has our expected presidental nominees been so far of the norm. If the question was ‘Who woud you hire to run the cmpany USA?’ would your answer ‘Experince or Vision’? Either could accomplish the task with the stakes so high. The responsibilty is on us, the voters. Let’s do our job guided by facts and instict. This is not a ‘let the best man (or woman) win, it is the stake of our country. The next election will direct the cource of out country for eternity. Wow.
