Michelle Obama’s Speech: I = You

The Cliff’s Notes version:

"I stand here today …knowing that my piece of the American Dream is a blessing hard won by those who came before me.  All of them driven by the same conviction that drove my dad to get up an hour early each day to painstakingly dress himself for work.  The same conviction that drives the men and women I’ve met all across this country…

"People who work the day shift, kiss their kids goodnight, and head out for the night shift – without disappointment, without regret – that goodnight kiss a reminder of everything they’re working for.  The military families who say grace each night with an empty seat at the table.  The servicemen and women who love this country so much, they leave those they love most to defend it. The young people across America serving our communities – teaching children, cleaning up neighborhoods, caring for the least among us each and every day…All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.

"That is the thread that connects our hearts.  That is the thread that runs through my journey and Barack’s journey and so many other improbable journeys that have brought us here tonight, where the current of history meets this new tide of hope.  That is why I love this country…

"So tonight, in honor of my father’s memory and my daughters’ future – out of gratitude to those whose triumphs we mark this week, and those whose everyday sacrifices have brought us to this moment – let us devote ourselves to finishing their work; let us work together to fulfill their hopes; and let us stand together to elect Barack Obama President of the United States of America."

(Also important: a shout-out to Hillary Clinton was in there too.)

I write this while sitting on the curb outside the Kansas City, Mo., home of Jim and Alicia Girardeau, the social workers with whom Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, watched his wife’s speech.

Homerun! Excellent speech! She will make an great first Lady!

For the 2nd time in her adult life, Michelle is proud of America!

It seems that everyone was impressed with Michelle Obama’s speech tonight.
Frankly, I thought it was transparent, almost embarrassing. Am I the only one who felt a little manipulated? She was just trying way too hard and it didn’t ever quite make it into the convincing category.
Sure, the little girls were cute (how could they not be?), but other than telling us that they love their daddy, it didn’t add anything of substance to parade them around on the stage.
Nobody has mentioned, either, that Michelle gave the impression that she left a big, high-powered law firm to go into public service at great financial sacrifice. She didn’t see fit to add that she now is paid more than $300,000 for her administrative work at the healthcare facility — a facility that has been the beneficiary of Obama’s largesse by way of earmarks.

As a Hillary supporter I can’t be more pleased with her speech tonight. As much as I wanted Hillary to win, Michelle Obama reinforced why I’m a democrat and why I’m voting Obama. She nearly left me in tears.

It always comes down to a speech for the Obamas. They are very short on experience.

Mean and Angry.

Posted by: Jokerous | August 25, 2008, 11:49 pm 11:49 pm

Michelle just forget to mention in her speech that in order to achieve their goals for America they have to bury the Clintons first.
She talked about love and hope, and fighting against fear, yet the reason they decided to not pick Hillary is because they were afraid of the anti-Hillary factor, which the republicans had invented? Where’s the love and hope in giving into cynicism and fear.
The speech was great but the context left it feeling a little hollow.

Hey ABC, kudos to you and Brian Ross for your investigative piece tonight on the news about all the lobbyists, private jets and parties going on in Denver. Loved it when they showed Leahy, Levin & Waxman all partying it up with the big wig lobbyists!
So much for Obama’s empty anti lobbyist rhetoric. Lol.

It was a pretty good speech I thought. Still, it lacked both the substance and the passion that I was thinking might be there. Maybe too much to ask for in one speech. At least I don’t think it did any harm to his campaign.
I don’t think many could argue that it was refreshing to see a young, nuclear family out there. Probably haven’t seen that since JFK.

Jake! Here’s your chance! Michelle Obama actually referenced legislation she claims her husband passed while in the Illinois legislature to benefit veterans. Please, Please, Please research what that law which she claims he passed might IN REALITY be!
And, lastly, though I obviously don’t like the Obamas ideologically, Michelle Obama, if her husband wins, will make a very glamorous first lady! In other words, somebody has to say it, she’s hot!

Posted by: Thank God for Karma | August 25, 2008, 11:57 pm 11:57 pm

Grand ole party
I reacted more to Obama talking to his kids on the satilite thing and not as much from Michelles speech which says something

I find them a beautiful family. I am proud to vote for Barack as a President who will take this country in the right direction.

Sorry, can’t move pass her mean comments. She should had never said those things. I don’t think they gained points tonight. I am beginning to think the Obama wave is at it’s peak. Tonight, it was very boring.

Didn’t Obama say he was in St. Louis? Must of forgot to bring his teleprompter. His cute little daughter gave him a chance to correct himself – he was in Kansas City.
Does he know where he is?
Does he know how many states there are?
This was a was a little too “staged”.

Like I said on another thread, even the liberal newsgal on Fox News panel wasn’t too impressed with the speech.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
Let’s face it, Michelle could get on the ground and kiss a flag and it still wouldn’t erase her past speeches.

Hmmm….do we believe the words of Michelle when she’s on the world stage and trying to win over the general population?
Or the words of Michelle in the small venues trying to win over the leftwing base?
Exactly.

What really got to me was the video with Michelle’s Mom doing the talking. She must be so proud of her daughter. As a Mom myself, I can really relate to Michelle. I think she and the Obama family are good role models.

Posted by: cincyr | August 26, 2008, 12:12 am 12:12 am

i thought it was a great speech about the way we can help our children see a better life by coming together and doing what we can now.. just like hillary’s speech about the cracks in the glass! Every time you reach for a better tomorrow you make it easier for your children to take it a step further.
maybe by the time my grandchildren are adults they will see a better america with people who love not hate, help and not turn away from others in need, peace and not war! who will learn from our mistakes and not repeat them!!! i sure hope so.

She connected with working mom trying to balance work and motherhood. It was just amazing.

Gracie – people like you find anything they can to be negative about! oh my he miss-spoke about where he was! big deal
he has been travailing to alot of city’s if you havent noticed… and of course its staged you dont think he accidentally ended up on a screen on the wall , do you? or his wife and kids just stopped at the convention to use the bathroom and were thrown on t.v.? lol

She’s middle-class just like me!
Yet, strangely, the church she belonged to for 20 years defines “middlecalssness” as racism on their website.

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am

Okay, her speech was well delivered, she looked stunning, however, it was not a homerun.
Two cliches about Hill and Biden and much on her family, although I thought her mother deserved more credit than she recieved.
I am not sure it will resonate wiht middle america.

Posted by: i am so I can!!!! | August 26, 2008, 12:24 am 12:24 am

From the “Black Value System” page of Obama’s church:
Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness.” Classic methodology on control of captives teaches that captors must be able to identify the “talented tenth” of those subjugated, especially those who show promise of providing the kind of leadership that might threaten the captor’s control.

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 12:26 am 12:26 am

Michelle talks about leaving a powerful job for a “career in public service” — her current job as a $300k per year director of community relations for a hospital? That’s public service? She works for a private entity. How is that public service?

oh lord im tired of hearing about his church!! anyone that goes to church has heard some hate filled words and dont lie and say you havent … most people that go to church dont follow all that is told to them good and bad ! so get over it already …

Melissa, I have gone to church all my life and I can honestly say, without a doubt, that we have never had not discussed a “Black (or white) Value System”

How does it sound?

no maybe not but have you talked about gays? having sex out with out marriage? all that is sins who is going to hell?
people dont think about how that may affect a person until they are the ones being judged.
and how many women in your church have kids and arent married? have gay children or are gay themself? talk about molesting children as a sin? yet how many priest got caught doing it?

some things you hear in church you believe and some you dont. thats all im saying. you cant pin everything a person in church preaches as what everyone in the church also believes or follows.

melissa
No matter how much you liked the church would you belong to it if it said this on its website;
“The highest level of achievement for any White person must be a contribution of strength and continuity of the White Community.”

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 12:43 am 12:43 am

Sammy:
You’re not so stupid to understand that there is a school of thought that blacks have to rebuild their social infrastructure to help lift as many as their friends and neighbors to live the values that you and yours live.
It is all about taking responsibility for your actions mixed with the social message that you have to help raise up your brothers and sisters. Are you your brother’s keeper? They feel they are.
How can you really be against that?
Obama’s so normal and Republican in his work ethic that it makes rote Republicans crazy.

Posted by: Debra | August 26, 2008, 12:47 am 12:47 am

What are we talking about here – the Democratic National Convention – pure politics equals manipulation to some extent. Michele did a great job w/the speech – however her speech has nothing to do with Obama’s qualifications to lead this country. I am confident that Obama’s speech will be a great one, and equally confident that he will be unfairly criticised for being a great orator w/little substance/experience. Would he receive more praise if his speech turned out to be a dud? Remember John Kennedy and his level of experience???
Ted Kennedy’s appearance was not stagecraft – it was genuine – the highlight of the first night.
Bottom line – we cannot afford to continue on the same path that we have been on for the past 8 years. PERIOD. So hopefully, this convention will heal the rift between the Clinton and Obama supporters to create the necessary force with which to beat McCain.

melissa….did you ever sit in a church and hear hatred towards any groups of people and blame for their situation…Whites, Jews, damning our Country with profanity and simulating sex (Bill “ridin” us). NEVER in any church do most Americans hear that stuff from their “old uncle mentor friend” Wright. Sorry if that’s a deal breaker for millions of Amerians.

Posted by: melissa | August 26, 2008, 1:10 am 1:10 am

what makes you think I hate them. I don’t.
I don’t respect them because they’re pretending to be something they are not. They’re fairly typical hard left progressives. That’s allowed. But they’re pretending to be middle-of-the road mainstream and they are not.

sammy but dont all of them try to be everything? mccain tries to be middle and then far right! its hard to please everyone and thats the name of the game, dont make anyone mad!?

Posted by: melissa | August 26, 2008, 1:13 am 1:13 am

melissa, surely
but if McCain started his career in the living room of a his friend, a radical anti-abortion terrorist bomber and went to a church which had as a “value” the “continuity of the White Race” I think it would rightly be held against him. I dont’ think he’d be considered in the mainstream.

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 1:17 am 1:17 am

sammy-
okay the man did some things wrong but he protested a war that he felt was wrong while on drugs in the 70′s!
its not like he murdered children in his basement ..
but some people absolutely will see who he works with and go’s to church with as who he is..
but what are you really afraid of? that he will pass a bill that all whites must line up and be shot? a bill that all bombings are legal? im just not sure where you see this as being a huge problem for the issues he will be voting on?

Posted by: melissa | August 26, 2008, 1:22 am 1:22 am

nothing like that melissa.
I am afraid he’s Carter II trying to masquerade as JFK.

“Only a cynic, one who wanted to hate the speech, could come away with a negative view.” serioiusly. she did a good job and got the convention off on a good note.
as far as her raise goes, the person that hired her said that was the going rate for the position she was promoted to. don’t act like michelle obama is the only person to use her smarts and contacts to advance their career. W Bush, McCain etc. these are not working class folks that relate to average americans.

Posted by: amy | August 26, 2008, 1:32 am 1:32 am

Obama will be a very typical big government, high taxes, weak towards our enemies far left liberal. That’s all. Anti-business pro regulation. Typical stuff.
You know – the personna he put out in the primaries. The policies that got him the nomination. He’s reversing his positions now to win the general. Trying to fool the middle of the road voter. But you and I BOTH know he’s against the war (even though NOW he says the surge has been a success) and he’s AGIANST off shore drilling even though now he says he isn’t.
He’s a fake.

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 1:35 am 1:35 am

this will backfire on Obama bigtime.
Even if the ad gets pulled its censorship will be discussed in the press and people who haven’t see it will wonder what was so bad about it that he sued to have it removed.

Posted by: Sammy | August 26, 2008, 1:43 am 1:43 am

im not going to disagree cause i dont know for sure who does really but here is my opinion..
we have gone to war with our enemies and that ( in my mind ) has lead to more enemies..
no president that i have lived threw has ever gone after our true threats because they have oil or because they might wipe the floor with us. while we take money from china to deal with a small annoyance.. we try to remain civil maybe even friends with those who may want to harm us the most.
we debate abortion knowing good and well its not even on the table to make it against the law.
there is no way on the green earth i stand on that we arent going to see a tax increase even tho both say we wont! we owe china we are in debt up to our eye sockets..
and right now we cant afford another war so the best thing we can do is try to come to a agreement “we hate you and you hate us we wont talk about it” cause lord knows our men have been threw enough blood shed.

Posted by: melissa | August 26, 2008, 1:45 am 1:45 am

This speech did nothing for me, am still waiting to get the message I don’t think she would of stood there and told us about the bad things of Obama would she.
So all who are jumping for joy over this speech, its the man wife giving a speech about him what did you expect her to say?
Geez you mean some of you people can fall for this kind of nonsense so easily?

Posted by: novote | August 26, 2008, 1:45 am 1:45 am

I am waiting to hear Cindy McCain’s speech at the upcoming Republican Convention. Then I can finish my comparison of these two women. One thing I know and value about Michelle is that she did not steal her husband from another woman and she has not stolen any drugs from a nonprofit organization.

Posted by: Allen Wilson | August 26, 2008, 1:45 am 1:45 am

Well, for those of us who did not go to private prep schools, and did not go to Ivy League schools (the same ones our daddys went to) – her story is our story. My Dad was blue collar too – not a rich doctor – and he raised us to understand that our word was our bond and that we were meant to be all that we could be and then to give back. So Michelle Obama’s story may not be your story – and I don’t know what’s its like to grow up on the south side of Chicago – but her story is my story. And it was a beautiful, honest speech – one that most reporters recognize.

Posted by: mara | August 26, 2008, 1:47 am 1:47 am

Unfortunately, the Obamas have used too much of their personal stories, their daughters, their so-called struggles to win voters. It is no longer working. I personally think it is very boring, and it starts to border the line of self-pity.

I loved Michelle and her speech, but she lost me when she said her husbands word is his bond. He’s a flip flopper is he not?
She said he did so much in the state sentate and did so much as a community organzier, but the record is clear – he didn;t do anything, His volunteers are trained to say “well that’s what we like about him” when any potential voters bring up his lack of accomplishments. If she hadn’t said his word is his bond – she might have been ok – but what politician’s word is their bond? Unfortunately, I’ve dtermined that Obama changes his promises more easily than most.

Posted by: Mary Ok | August 26, 2008, 2:27 am 2:27 am

My favorite part of Michelle Obama’s speech is where she stated: “And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life…”
She wants her children to have that work ethic. Yet, she, Sen. Obama and the Liberals want to rob from the wealthy (which many really have earned their wealth through hard work, blood, sweat, tears and determination, not just through inheritance) in order to provide the middle class and poor with several new entitlement-handouts. So on the one hand they say it is good to work hard for what you want. You finally achieve it and then they want to take it away so that others can receive new entitlement-handouts at your expense! Where’s the incentive to work hard if the government is just going to give it to you.
Wake up America! Nothing is free! All these new entitlement-handouts will only make you a slave to the federal government. That is change we don’t need!

Personal story is not what Obama can use to compete with McCain. Obama’s personal life, at most is interesting – is not even admirable. A self-struggled guy who used drug to help himself get out his distress, a guy whose political career relied on corrupted slumlord and other Chicago political god father — Obama’s life is all about himself. At what point did he make any sacrifice to this country?
I have to say, McCain’s life is so unique, and honorable. How many can live a life like his? Ask yourself before you attack him.

Michelle was on her best Behavior tonight, or she was stoned.
The poor obama’s who both went to private schools as children, then on to ivy league colleges.
Who affirmitive action student loans took so long to pay off.
Who stuggled to get their daughters 10 grand worth of piano lessons and sports.
Who got the Rezko’s who had little income to assist in the purchasing of their home.
*plays the violin*
You bet all the new entitlement programs will read “African American and minorities”
Which is not right.
Everything should be written US Citizen only.
Did Mr Obama Renounce his US Citizenship when he told the world, he was a “Citizen of the World”

Too bad she probably still hates America from behind that fake smile. Or it could be her real smile, knowing how she scammed her way into a cushy, high paying job for doing nothing. Like husband like wife.

If McCain supporters were not so sure that her speech was excellent, they wouldn’t be making so much efforts trying to denigrate it. They would leave that at the discretion of the AMerican people. The truth is, now that she has been given the possibility to address directly the American people, she rocked! And whether or not you support Obama, you know, that these are sincere people who only seek to contribute to making this country a better place for all of its citizens.

I cried for the first time since the political season started. Her speech touched me to the core of my sole. I felt a true American speaking and I could very much identify her. From now on I will do anything in my power to help her husband get elected because I believe more than ever that this is the kind of change we can believe in. And all the people who criticize this speech, it shows you actually took the time to sit, watch and listen, and i congratulate you for that because if you were so sure your candidate McCain was 100% reliable, you wouldn’t bother be looking somewhere else.

I was so pleased by the way the Democrats handled the convention last night. No aggressivity, nothing but praise and respect for a candidate we know we can believe in. I want to salute the remarkable Ted Kennedy who came all the way to Denver to deliver a speech our grandchildren will be visioning in the future, saying to themselves, wow! he was right! The dream lives on!Long life to Ted Kennedy! and Congratulations again to Michelle, what a talented woman!

I am so proud to be American. I sat in front of my TV with my children watching Michelle deliver a speech. And I could see through their fascination that we, as a nation, have come from a long way indeed. This DNC is not a celebration of Obama only but of what our deepest values. Obama got here because of the faith we have invested in each others and I am so proud of his wife, Michelle Obama, who has silenced all critics who thought she was not patriotic enough. Not only does her story embody the very essence of patriotism, but her dreams for her children and our chilren, shows it even more. I am thankful to be American and more importantly I am thankful to have cocitizens like many of you who are making this experience possible for my family and your families. Thank you.

Michelle is an admirable woman I look forward to seeing at the White House! ANd when you haters are faced with the tough decision to vote, remember, what is really at stake. Don’t make this a selfish or ethnocentric vote. Vote for the person who will restore our confidence in our nation and that, in all fairness and logic, can not be the person who voted 95% in favor of the failed policies of Georges Bush which laid us to where we are. If you vote for McCain, you will have to live with the sad conscience of having voted for a more disatrous economic plan, and you will have to wake up every day; thinking “if only i had been American enough, at that right time when my country needed me” Think about it. You can’t have listened to Michelle’s speech and not have been inspired. She is such an inspiration, a true sense of wisdom and generosity.

Poor Mccain supporters:
Finally understand that these right wing pollers won’t have the last work. The middle class is taking over the country and we are all the way to the White House. This is our country too and we won’t let McCain take our dignity from us! We will do everything we can to elect Obama and that starts by volunteering and speaking out to undecided voters. This is not about being Republican, it is about being AMerican, the current situation our country is confronted to requires us to stand up for our country and not for Partisanship. It just won’t do. To Rlamb,
Any person who knows history, American or that of anything else, will say there are many things to be proud of, and many not to be proud of.
Is there anyone proud of the American record of denying the vote to African Americans in (most of) the Southeast for nearly 100 years?
Is there anyone who is NOT proud of America’s magnificent record in (most of) the Second World War and in (most of) the Cold War?
Life and history are complex. No one can be proud of everything in a history
if they actually know that history.

A person’s true character comes out when they know they are not being watched by the masses.
Michele’s true character revealed: her racist thesis. She was not proud of America then, why would she be proud now?
her speech tonight was written by the same speech writers who puppet Obama. It’s so transparent you can see right through her. I pity those who fell for this actress, she deserves an Oscar for her performance.

What a crock! McCain wasn’t the only POW, most would have loved to have gotten the treatment he got. McCain had a chance to help those that were left in those stinking camps, but he turned his back. Ross Perot knows, so do a lot of others.

Beautiful family, hansom man with great charm. Only in America do the party nominate, out of 8 potentials at that first TV-debate, the person with no plan for universal health-care.
Obama represents everything that’s wrong with America. He’s Bush over again. The candidate you like vs. the best candidate.
It looks like Dems are going for the political theater, muscleing the minority. Are voters making the same mistake this time, after 8 years.
I hope not!

Posted by: Sylvia Johnsen | August 26, 2008, 6:49 am 6:49 am

What really gets me is that Obama follwers are so swept up in his etnicity, and for the historic achievement of nominating and possibly electing him. Experience, good judgment, and the ability to stick to his seemingly (usually) high morals don’t seem to matter much.
Those same people ignore the fact that nominating and possibly electing Hillary Clinton would have been just as historic. Add to that years of proven experience, knowledge of just about every important event in current history, REAL plans, concrete solutions, sound judgment, etc… The ability to answer questions with authority without stumbling and stammering is nice, too.
It’s clear why half of the democratic voters voted for Obama, and it’s sad.
What does this glorified motivational speaker stand for? He’s caved in on so many of the issues that got him nominated, and his VP pick voted for the war- wait, wasn’t being against the war Obama’s main argument that helped win people’s hearts? Where does he stand now? He’s a fool for not choosing Hillary and his arrogance and pride will cause him to lose in November.

Neither one is not like me. They’re both scary.
Obama hopes the Americans are sleeping.
So does Michelle.
All of a sudden, Michelle loves this country now that Obama stole the primaries.
Obama is a disgrace. He’s embarrassing.
What is wrong with the media.
What are they afraid of.
Examine and report on Obama. The media should for all presidential candidates.
Obama’s HOPE message is that he can pull this off
He keeps changing his mind……..that’s his CHANGE message.
Rezko the criminal.

Bravo, Michelle! You and Barack Obama are the very embodiment of the American Dream. We desperately need someone with his intelligence, judgment, and character in the Oval Office–especially after the national nightmare known as George W. Bush. There’s so much at stake in this election that I sincerely hope and pray that we will resist the GOP smears and fearmongering. John McCain’s campaign and out-of-touch positions on issues that affect evryday Americans has demonstrated that he is wrong for our country. We need Obama/Biden in the White House!

any american can make a great speech. There are so many wonderful stories in america. OK it’s fine that Michelle’s can be singled out for one night. But the question is can her husband lead. And I don’t think he’s ready yet to lead this country.

Posted by: sshh | August 26, 2008, 8:07 am 8:07 am

It was a tough task to follow Ted Kennedy’s emotional moment, but Michelle was, by far, the most memorable moment. Who knows what history will say.
Every woman can relate to the internal conflict of choosing a high paying job (and that law firm was very high paying), and then choosing a career that spoke to your passion rather than your pocketbook.
Every man can relate to the admiration one feels for a wife that sacrifices her own ambition for the betterment of the family, and then asking that woman to sacrifice time with your children in order to help the family. She believes in public service and seems genuine that she wants to help America. This is a truly American story, and an intensely patriotic family.
Maybe one day the world will see Barack address the convention when Michelle is running for President.

No matter what you think of the Obama’s and how you may feel. Michelle’s speech was not only eloquent, but it was something that many working people can relate to. Not to mention that, although she could be an elitsit and command a salary as an attorney, she chose to do public service and give back to the youth. There are acouple of facts that can’t be disputed. Bush’s adminstration has spent more than any other in history, and gas is has been and continues to be higher than ever before, so anyone that speaks of changing that and helping people that have to be resourceful to keep their Only home, and not seven, can get my support.

Michelle Obama’s job was to direct poor neighborhood people away from the emergency room services at the University of Chicago Hospitals. She was paid over $300k/year to do this. She was hired because it wouldn’t look good for a white person to do it: she was willing to sell out to make money, I guess to support her $600 earrings and $10k for the girls’ dance lessons. This is the America she hates: herself!

Posted by: tina | August 26, 2008, 8:53 am 8:53 am

Michelle was very pretty tonight but she lost me on many fronts:
she said she left a law firm to be community ogranizer too?? she is getting paid $300,000 in a hospital
She said Obam did so much in the state sentate and did so much as a community organzier..ok, but what was the results, in the senate there Obama vote “present” for 100 times…so it’s his records that are the problem and scary. HE DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO SHOW.
I WANT TO VOTE FOR HIM, BUT I CAN NOT VOTE FOR JUST “CHANGE” AND “HOPE”..I NEED MORE

Posted by: FRIEDA | August 26, 2008, 8:54 am 8:54 am

Oh yes Michelle the goddess of the poor…she works at her 300k job and implements plans that don’t allow the sick and poor to come to her hospital…unless they have buckets of cash and need a liver transplant. Yes, yes, yes she is certainly of the people and for the people. It doesn’t suprise me in this celebrity driven world that we can’t see beyond our noses. All we care about is the wrapping on the package, not what’s inside.

A “good speech” changes nothing and is easy to do. Being a good president is much harder and I do NOT believe OBama is ready or fit to be our President. There are WAY too many freightening things happening in this world right now for an inexperienced person to take command of the most important job in the world. We need experience and that comes with McCain and only McCain.

Michelle’s speech was absolutely WONDERFUL. I loved the part in the video where she spoke of how she and Barack met. If Obama hopes to win my vote and the Hillary women vote he better release Michelle onto the campaign trail. As of right now I’m leaning Obama I just can’t wait for Hillary’s speech tonight.

Jamie Allman on 97.1 FM on St. Louis, MO is at the convention in Denver. He reported this morning that, although the television cameras did not show it, there were delegates walking out during Michelle Obama’s speech last night, while others sat with their arms crossed and refused to clap when the rest of the audience. He said the tension is “palpable” between the Hillary and Obama supporters. He followed one of the female delegates who walked out during Michelle’s speech, and she agreed to talk to him. I don’t know if it was on the record or not – he did not identify her by name. She said that it was not only Republicans who were insulted by Michelle Obama’s statements about not being proud of her country. Many Democrats were insulted, too. She said that in her opinion, the Democratic Party was not united, and she didn’t expect it to be.

Posted by: JB in St. Louis | August 26, 2008, 9:15 am 9:15 am

Tip to Michelle: Working for a private hospital making and $350,000 a year is not community service.
(And you got into college because your smart, older brother was star of the basketball team and pulled strings for you to get in.
You did not have the grades to get in – your high school counselors even advised you to forget college.)

Her speech was shiney plastic, fake and poorly presented.
And what was the deal with Obama showing up on the video screen like he is dressed for an office picnic? Not Presidential-looking.

Giving speeches is not where it is at people. Honesty, truthfulness, straightforwardness—-learned nothing from Ms Obama last night. They dressed her so she looked perky. Disappointed. The children echo a close family, but like John Edwards family and kids this means nothing. The public is interested in policies…what is going to be the change.

Michelle looked great and told a touching story about her parents.
The stuff about Barack was just her usual stump speech.
I felt sorry for the Obama kids–for what they will be exposed to, for the normal life they will never have if their dad is elected, for the chance some nut might shoot their dad or them.

Michelle’s exactl comment was “For the first time in my adult life I’m proud of America”. They had been repeatedly told by other that America would never vote for a black man. At least get the quote straight before you try to smear someone. Also, let me ask you, how proud of you of the way your current president hadled Katrina? Now, that idiot McCain had the nerve in a speech a few months ago to chastise Bush’s handling of Katrina but what the sleeze bag didn’t tell you was that at the time, Bush was delivering a cake to one of McCain’s house’s for his birthday party! As I said before I am not an Obama fan but she gave a wondeful speech, whether or not I like her husband I know that she loves him and that she beleives in him, I dont think I can say that I think Cindy McCain thinks her husband can do the job.

The real mark of failure is that Michelle Obama HAD to give a speech like this.

Posted by: JW | August 26, 2008, 11:36 am 11:36 am

It’s amazing to me that after eight years of pure misery – there’d be any question as to who to vote for in Novemeber. If the opposing candidate to four more years of a “Bushlike” administration wass Daffy Duck – he’d have my vote, it’s just the icing on the cake for me that it happens to be an articulate amd genuine Black American, who I and my children can look up to, Barack Obama. Michelle’s speech brought tears to my eyes. It is awesome to see that kind of love and support and what all of the McCain supporters seems to be missing is that that is exactly what this country needs – LOVE and SUPPORT. If they’re capable of that within their family, then that’s who I want running my country. Someone with a proven HEART, who won’t leave people stranded without food or water for days, who won’t send innocent young soldiers over to die in Iraq for a senseless war. I am looking forward to the CHANGE in rule – because I can;t take anymore of the BUSH way.
And one more thing, having opportunities (private school, instrumental lessons, college) doesn’t make you out of touch or mean your parents/family didn;t sacrifice and you didn’t struggle… I don’t come from money and for a lot of my younger years my mother pretty much raised me alone with the help of my grandmother and aunts and extended family. SHE SACRIFICED to send me to the finest schools, expose me to other cultures and musical instruments and classes. She went without new clothes and fancy cars so that I could have these opportunitues – but we were not rich. And that is the message that Michelle delivered last night. That she and Barack didn’t have the opportunities that they had without sacrifice. It wasn’t beacsue they were so rich they they attended those schools. It was because they had families that cared… but obviuously some of you are “too elite” to recognizw what that’s all about. I’m glad you McCain supporters “hated” her speech… that tell’s me how truly AWESOME, ELOQUENT, POWERFEUL, and CAPTIVATING she truly was.
GO OBAMA’S GO!

Feh.
The first words out of one’s mouth are usually the honest ones.
Out of Michelle’s mouth first were her words of not being proud of her country until her husband ran for President.

I’m Baracking Baby! you certainly are entitled to your opinions. However…
(1) You wrote: “Someone with a proven HEART, who won’t leave people stranded without food or water for days…” This is an obvious misunderstanding of the Katrina aftermath. First of all, it was the local government (i.e. Mayor Ray Nagin) who told the people to go to the Superdome and Convention Center and failed to provide food and water. In fact, these people were told they were on their own and should bring their own food and water. FEMA is not a first line responder. YET in spite of having only about 4,000 employees and being spread throughout the Gulf Coast, all of a sudden they were expected to fullfil the role of a first responder in New Orleans.
(2) You continued with: “…who won’t send innocent young soldiers over to die in Iraq for a senseless war.” Saddam Hussein refused for twelve years to comply with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire. So after 12 years of diplomatically trying to convince Saddam Hussein to comply, the UN Security Council finally gave their final ultimatum. BUT since they were not going to follow through on their ultimatum, President Bush offered his own. When Saddam Hussein still refused to comply with the conditions of the cease fire, President Bush rescinded the cease fire and resumed the 1991 Gulf War. If you recall, it was Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait that started the war in the first place.

Her speech only proved she reads as well as her husband. She can be made over, appropriately dressed, but that will never change what is in her heart. You only get one time to make a first impression, and she blew it with her “for the first time I’m proud” comment. I will NOT vote for Obama.

What half way intelligent person listens to James Carvelle? He is an idiot! Are there any Americans out there with working brains? Why would you vote for a rich guy that is going to inact a draft to send your babies to war? What rational individual would vote to rewind time and progress? Only unintelligent individuals feed off of negativity. Smart people use their minds and vote the issues! My advice, pay attention to those attempting to tear down positive messages. The reason is they have nothing to offer of their own.
Obama/Biden 08-16!

It’s hard to believe the Obama’s truly love America when they willingly hung out with anti-American radicals.
I just don’t trust them–especially Barack who has gone back on his word many times (public finance,FISA, debates
drilling).
How can we trust Obama since he felt comfortable starting his political career at the home of an unremorseful terrorist?

I know war heors, and tey don’t tell their stories on national TV. i’m from AZ and if mccain does for the country what he did for is home state the rich will get richer and the poor will go fight needless wars for them.

If you are discussing what she wrote at Princeton – first of all I doubt whether it was a thesis. She got her undergraduate degree there. Second, Hillary is capable of putting together some decent speeches and her senior project reads like a 14-year olds. Third, no one could have written that speech unless they had lived her life.

Posted by: mara | August 26, 2008, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

Jake, One I=You – you’re right. You are not Michelle Obama. But that speech wasn’t aimed at people who went to private prep schools, the same Ivy League schools as their daddy’s went to and married money. It was aimed at regular Americans. Most Americans came from working class backgrounds – the same as the Obamas. Most people did not come from the entitled, wealthy, careless life shared by the McCains and a large portion of the national press under 50.

Gary – Thanks for your post. My father-in-law was a vet, I know POWs, my brother-in-law was in Vietnam and in a full career as an intelligence officer – and all of them are appalled that John McCain is playing on his experience over and over and over. They see it as an act of disrespect for the service – and for the men and women who did not come home to new lives. In the twenty-five years I’ve known my father-in-law and brother-in-law, they have talked about their experiences exactly zero times. And to sell them for ambition? They have way too much honor.

Posted by: mara | August 26, 2008, 3:15 pm 3:15 pm

Michelle Speech was brilliant. The problem is that no matter how much you speak to the public the Republican and their so-call democrat (republican ) will find something negative to say.
Cindy McCain can not give a speech like that in a million years. Why don’t you (Republicans ) ever comment on Cindy McCain Speech?

Posted by: Chris | August 26, 2008, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

As a young 23 year old woman I am amazed as to how many of my fellow Americans can be duped by a few cheesy lines and two adorable kids. Michelle Obama’s speech was the same old fluff that is purely written in hopes to undo the image damage she did while on the campaign trail. That speech sought out peoples’ emotions, but still did not even mention on WHY he husband would be better, or WHAT it is he is going to do. I saw a comment saying we need “love” and “hope”…that is ridiculous.. we need a rational, strategic plan to stregthen the economy and win the war in a timely manner.

Posted by: Jennifer Johnson | August 26, 2008, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

To James Danley, you say that Iraq started the war in 1991? Was it with us or Kuwait?? And the only reason why we helped Kuwait is…..?? Oil. And Second, Bush/Cheney LIED to us about WMD (weapons of mass destruction) so we can invade (not liberate) Iraq for the oil. This current administration will go down in history as one (if not) the worst administration. If Obama becomes President, I’m sure he will do a great job, because being the 1st black president I know for sure he will not dissapoint. But if Mccain, who is aligned with Bush/Cheney wins this election, then I will be ashamed to call myself an American, because it would just tell me that this country does not care about anything, the enviroment, the working class, the poor etc.

Too bad that the most she can be is First Lady of the United States. This woman, in a different nation and a different world, wouldn´t have just cracked the glass ceiling, she would have broken through it on the first shot.
Thanks to Hillary, it will be at least another generation before we women regain the credibility that she so manifestly squandered during the primaries. Hillary Clinton set us back in time. Nice of Michelle to mention her, but it was strictly tongue-in-cheek.
What´s the name of Michelle´s husband? Oh, yea, forgot: Barack.
Doesn´t really matter. Any guy who was savvy enough to marry this marvel of a human being gets my vote. Just show me where to put the X.

Posted by: DanaPH | August 26, 2008, 5:14 pm 5:14 pm

So many negative comments on a wonderful speech. It seems that NO MATTER WHAT she said, some people would still find something bad to say about it. Is there ANYTHING that she could have said to impress the haters? They only listen to try to find flaws. But what I really don’t understand is how anyone who was for Hillary could possibly vote for McCain? I have been for Obama, but if he had lost the primary to Clinton I would vote for her for the better of the country. Their ideals are so similar while McCain is way off.

Posted by: ObamaBob | August 26, 2008, 5:52 pm 5:52 pm

Joe Angel, a coalition of 34 nations responded to Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1991. After 100 days, Saddam Hussein accepted the conditions of the cease fire. But he never complied with any of these conditions. Therefore it was reasonable to rescind the cease fire and resume the war.
Whether or not there were WMDs in Iraq in 2003 is IRRELEVANT. One of the conditions of the 1991 cease fire was Saddam Hussein coming clean about his WMD programs. The destruction of these programs was to have occurred under the supervision of the IAEA. So Saddam Hussein was obligated to prove that he no longer had WMDs, which he failed to do.
Now as for Bush and Cheney lying, where is your outrage at the Democrats for “lying” in 1998-2002? Democrats like: President Bill Clinton, VP Al Gore, Sec. of State Madeline Albright, Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, Bob Graham, Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Jay Rockefeller, Hillary Clinton AND Representatives Henry Waxman and Nancy Pelosi to name a few. Some Democrats even said that the threat was imminent–which the Bush Administration NEVER said.
For more than half his life, Sen. Obama has had mentors like Frank Marshall Davis (a communist), Saul Alinsky (a communist), the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. (a Black Liberation Theologian) and Father Michael Pfleger (a radical liberal). And Sen. Obama wrote in his book, Audacity of Hope: “I will stand with the Muslims should the politcal winds shift in an ugly direction.” Sen. Obama is the wrong man for the job.

In spite of the fanatical Obama supporters illusion that disliking Barack and MIchele is blasphemy … and that Michele’s speech was so great … Many Americans saw her speech as a masquerade. Both Barack and Michele think they can cover up their own history of anti-American racist remarks and associations, simply by giving a few speeches to the contrary. Furthermore, it should be noted that in addition to Barack and Michelle choosing Jeremiah Wright as their mentor and spiritual advisor, for 20 years … they also subjected their two young daughters to the racist anti-American likes of Wright, Farrakhan, Pfleiger, Moss, etc.. This also does not jive with the all American family image the Obama’s are all of sudden trying so hard to portray for political gain.

Posted by: Gina | August 26, 2008, 6:50 pm 6:50 pm

It seems to me that SOME PEOPLE are just determined NOT to like them… NO matter WHAT they do or say. Soome people have just made a decision NOT to VOTE for Obama… NOT because Michelle misspokne ONCE and not because Barack atteneded a church of a Pastor with questionable views but because THEY JUST DON’T WANT TO… which is fine, if they’re fine with the way the world is going that’s fine. DON’T VOTE FOR OBAMA… but don’t then blame it on that, just say “I’m not voting for him because I dont like him and I never did… I never even tried to.” But remember, that isn’t really what this election is supposed to be about. We’re not in high school – and we’re not electing Prom King,,. we’re electing a President to lead our country. And if you all can honestlt say you’re happy under the George Bush reign and go and pull the lever for JOhn McCain… well I think ALL of our troops should be allowed to come home and YOU should go over and fight Bush and McCain’s war. You should not only continue to pay to fill up your car at these outrageous prices – you should also pay to fill up mine and the other millions of American’s who are tired of emptying their pockets at the pump – because obviously this isn’t a issue to you… and we all shouldn’t be forced to continue to pay for your mistakes.

I’m Baracking Baby!, the history books will be very kind to President Bush.
Our economy has taken some really hard hits during President Bush’s two terms: He inherited a recession; 9/11; the War on Terror (including the Battle of Iraq); corporate scandals; devastating hurricanes (2004-05); the slumping housing market; the subprime mortgage crisis, and subsequent tightening of credit; and the skyrocketing energy prices.
The 2001 Bush tax cuts turned around the 2000-01 recession. The combination of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts greatly diminished the effect that 9/11 and the corporate scandals had on our economy. Then we actually had 54 consecutive months of job growth (an historical record) ending December 2007–as the effects of the triple whammy of the slumping housing market, the subprime mortgage crisis and skyrocketing energy prices caused the downturn in the economy. YET in spite of these latest hits to the economy, GDP actually grew the first two quarters of 2008. There have been 463,000 jobs lost in the first 7 months of the year and unemployment rate has jumped to 5.7%. BUT, historically 5.7% unemployment is a healthy number.
I contend that President Bush’s economic policies have gotten us through and limited the effects of these huge blows to our economy; and DID NOT cause the downturn.
Could things get worse? Yes, of course! Raising taxes, doing nothing to increase our supply of oil, not expanding nuclear power; implementing windfall profits taxes on the oil companies, and adding several new and very expensive entitlement programs–the Obama economic plan–WILL NOT help us turn the economy around.

Posted by: James Danley | August 27, 2008, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

Correction: That should have been 52 consecutive months of job grown.

Posted by: James Danley | August 27, 2008, 2:09 pm 2:09 pm

This speech was just more political _ _.
Remember the old saying “you can take the girl out of the country(country meaning a hick), but you can’t take the country out of the girl”?
Well….we are what we are.

I’m Baracking Baby: What gave you the idea that Obama was black? If you are educated you would know that a man that is half black and half white can’t be black. He can never be either race. Wake up. And he isn’t bi-racial or mixed race.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 10:25 pm 10:25 pm

Gina: Your are so right in what you said about Obama and Michele. There is so much dirt in Obama’s background I can’t see how so many voter’s are drawn to him. It must be the speeches of the late JFK, RFK and MLK that he studied for the platform. I knew months back that he was using other’s. And he fooled the majority of the American public. Is he going to do all he said? I don’t think so. It is a gimmick to get elected but I am not falling for it. I am voting McCain. Hillary’s fundraisers are not donating to Obama they have already started donating to McCain and no doubt will swith their vote. If the majority of Hillary’s voter’s do the same, McCain will win the election. We just have to hope.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 10:33 pm 10:33 pm

Jennifer: Michele left you in tears talking about the bad times she went thru when she was young? And how Obama was poor and his mother on food stamps? Give me a break. Both of them were not poor. Obama’s mother went to college and started to teach him about MLK when he was five years old. After college she was working and so was her mother. Obama’s mother was married and divorced three times and his father four times. He has half brothers and sisters all over. His grandmother raised him when his mother died of cancer and sent him thru college. He never worked until he graduated. That’s when he got involved with Rezko, Ayers and Wright. However, he was a racist as a young boy and hated white people. Get a copy of his BIO from the NYT and read up on him. All you people believe their poor story. There are a lot of poor people on the streets but the are not faking like Michele and Obama.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm

I’m Baracking Baby: If your electing a president, that leaves Obama out because he doesn’t have the capabilities to lead. Quote from Biden: Obama is not ready to be president. That’s why Obama will be the president in name only and Biden will be making the decisions. This is the highly educated Obama that people say is to intelligent. And if your paying too much for gas, take a bus, its cheaper. The trouble with a lot of American’s they are spoiled and lazy. The bus isn’t good enough for them so they use their credit cards to fill up time after time then get mad because they run out of money. That’s like the people that bought houses or condo’s with 5% down instead of 25% to 30% down and then they faced foreclosure. It appears that people make their own mistakes by their choices.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | August 28, 2008, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm

I totally disagree with alot of the comments listed. Yes everyone knows that Barack and Michelle isn’t perfect and have previous pasts, but who don’t. That doesn’t mean that Barack isn’t equipped with becoming our next president. I honestly fell that he will do his best on trying to meet and keep the expectations laid before him for the country. If or when he becomes the next president, because change is over due. People are steady trying to tear Barack and Michelle down look. With out looking at what has happened over the last eight years. The country needs a strong leader who is going to build up the country’s security and restore all that has been lost over the last eight years. Regardless of what other people think Barack has my vote.
