Obama and Bayh, Sitting in a Tree … Sort Of

ABC News’ John Berman, Sunlen Miller, and Andy Fies in Elkhart, Indiana report: It was almost a double man-hug.  But just what does it mean?  After, Indiana Senator Evan Bayh gave a rousing 12-minute introduction to Barack Obama in Elkhart, Ind., this morning, Senator Barack Obama bounded on stage for an embrace.  The two men held each other for a moment, speaking words no one else could hear.  And just when it looked like it was over, they went in for more. So does this mean they are more than just friends? More than just a couple Midwesterners? More than just Senate colleagues?  Could it be that sometime soon, very soon even, they could be running mates? Bayh is on many of the so-called short-lists for prospective Democratic vice presidential candidates (by media types at least).  He has artfully dodged and deflected questions about whether he is being considered; his coyness though, betraying an apparent, even obvious desire. Today he put on display some of the traits that might make him attractive.  First of all, he pointed out that Indiana is a state Democrats normally don’t compete in.  In the past, “the Democratic nominee has written us off,” Bayh said.  But the Obama campaign sees it as an opportunity, running neck and neck with John McCain in the battleground state in most public polling. And what could help Obama more in Indiana that an enormously popular native son?  Evan Bayh was an enormously popular governor in Indiana before he was and enormously popular senator.  And his father was an enormously popular senator before that (with national aspirations himself.) The Bayh name might be able to tip the scales in a tight race.  What’s more, Bayh supported Sen. Hillary Clinton during the primaries, so could serve as an olive branch to that part of the party. The knock against Bayh is that he can come across as a little bland.  But not today.  His 12 minute introduction was loud, energetic, and enthusiastic.  He delivered it almost flawlessly, barely looking at notes.  And he even told a joke, saying that John McCain’s energy policy is to, “Drill drill drill … sounds like my dentist.”  People actually laughed. So was this a meeting of future team mates?  Was it an audition?  Is that why Obama was in Indiana today?  Evan Bayh wouldn’t say: “Barack Obama is here with us today because he cared enough to come,” he said. And for his part, Obama wouldn’t say either.  After Bayh’s introduction and the hug was over, Obama said, “what a wonderful greeting and introduction …  Give a round of applause to one of the most wonderful United States senators we have.” Just how wonderful?  We are still left to wonder. Bayh did, however, catch a ride on Obama’s campaign bus giving the presumptive Democratic nominee and a possible VP candidate 74 miles -or an hour and 18 minutes – to talk. The senators loaded on Obama’s "myluxurybus.com" campaign bus separately. Bayh was accompanied by his deputy chief of staff Linda Moore Forbes, who flew out from Bayh’s DC Senate office yesterday. Obama senior strategist Robert Gibbs and campaign aides were also aboard for the ride. The two senators were driving to the second of Obama’s campaign events of the day – to a retail stop at a local diner in Portage, Indiana where they will team up for the obligatory retail stop: shaking hands, kissing babies, and maybe even sampling some pie. As VP speculation runs rampant — and Bayh’s name is rumored to be on the short list — the face time between the two Senators is significant. Just yesterday, Bayh told the Indianapolis Star that he knew of no planned meetings being scheduled between him and Obama. But surely an hour bus ride is enough time to talk shop? “Kathleen Sibelius is a better choice. I see a Sibelius/Bayh ticket in 2016!!!”
I think Sebelius has a good shot at being a future nominee. I don’t think I would recommend Obama pick her this time, but she seems to have a bright future.
I do like the Bayh pick. He helps in Indiana and because he is boring (first rule in running mates is do no harm). Kaine neither hurts nor helps in Virginia, so I’d prefer Bayh.

the comments on here show how smart the other side is
“It’s odd for a man to fist bump his wife but hug other men.”
well I guess we can see where the other side is… it’s odd for someone to even take note of those two things…lol
sounds like some commenters on here have their own little issues going on. lol

Hope Bayh straightened Obama out on the tire pressure thing. Obama`s projected oil savings assumes we are all nincompoops driving our cars with under-inflated tires.

If Kathleen Sebelius is not picked, it is most likely due to pressure from the creepy Clinton caravan of oddities.
Strange, but I guess one can add sexist to the description creepy Bill Clinton gave of himself the other day. Of course this is a guy who exposed himself to one of his subordinates in the Arkansas government – among a host of awful things he did to women. Maybe not that surprising.

So McCain wants to build 45 new NUKE plants. This raises a few questions which I hope some of you conservatives (no pun intended) can answer. What will we do with all the nuclear waste, which btw, stays radioactive for hundreds of years? How many YUCCA mountains do we have? More importantly, what happens when one of two of them have a meltdown? Does anyone remember THREE MILE ISLAND or CHERNOBYL? Who will be in charge of these 45 new nuke plants? Will the head of the Nucleur Regulatory Commission be Homer Simpson or Smithers?

I certainly hope that the VP candidate has more integrity, better judgment and more real experience than Obama–he was in Congress about a year before starting his presidential campaign. I do find Obama to be too far left on too many issues. He also distorts and flip-flops too much.

I think it is not a good sign for Bayh that Obama felt the need to spend this much time in INdiana and not make the announcement.
I would guess he is trying to shore up Indiana

Posted by: Chris | August 6, 2008, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm

Boston…completely new and improved technology now as far as avoiding a meltdown—-and although the waste is radioactive—–the waste is a tiny amount giving nuke energy a rating as an environmentally friendly energy source. I imagine the Yaka mountains have room for all the waste since there isn’t that much in mass.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, often mentioned as a possible running mate for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, said Wednesday GOP candidates would do well to adopt a positive tone like that of McCain’s Democratic rival Barack Obama.
“Say what you will about Barack Obama,” the Minnesota Republican told a conservative group, “people gravitate when you have something positive to say.”

None of this matters one bit! OBAMA YAMAN is on his way out the pools don’t lie for all of his Rock Star qualities he’s still virtualy tied with McCaine and after he dismises Hillary completely by not offering her the VP position he’ll be done for good! We the Hillary loyals and hardliners will not forgive such an action. I will not vote in Nov. for any presidential candidate but I will vote for the rest of the candidates in my state and congressional district and I know many whom intend to vote the same. However if Obama is even a bit disrespectful to Hillary in any way I will vote for McCaine without hesitation. So be very careful Obama Yama my eyes are on you!

I am an octoroon. Probably most of you don’t know what that is. An octoroon is a white person with one black great-grandparent, and no other black relatives. In other words, the offspring of a quadroon and a white person, or a person with one-eighth black ancestry. Why is this important? Fortunately, it isn’t. It was important once, since in the American colonies, civil rights were based directly on the degree of European blood that ran in a person’s veins. The distinctions in one’s heritage were extremely important, since they determined whether a man (not a woman) could vote or own property. My point – and I do have one – is that these racial distinctions are becoming less and less clear as the centuries progress. I listen to discussions about this presidential race all the time, and even among people who have no idea of my lineage, the discussions center on issues, not race. Most of the people I know (admittedly, 95% white) are not concerned with Barack Obama’s race. They are concerned about the issues first. I happen to be a John McCain supporter, but I applaud the fact that we now live in a society where words like “octoroon” seem like something right out of a history book. When I told my 12 year old niece the meaning of this word, she asked “Why do we even need a word like that?” Out of the mouths of children . . . we don’t need a word like that today, and that’s a good thing.

So many people in these blogs perpetuating lies, smear tactics, etc. etc. i.e. Obama is not gay nor is he an empty suit, not a drug addict, and all those other things. You folks do need to join the McCain camp where truth doesn’t matter. As for the Clintons–have you read the Clinton history? If not, you really should.
By the way, I’m a sourthern republican that will vote Obama in November in hopes that he can make changes in Washington for the good of the people. In particular, my grandchildren.

Jeff – Who else would claim that Obama running onto a stage to greet Evan Bayh is a “devil dance similar to Rev. Wright’s damnce in the pulpit?” Who would claim the “Obama’s candidacy is based on Affirmative Action?”
In my opinion, that had to come from people with racist tendencies in my opinion.
My view is that the more Barack does well, the more angry such people will be. Sean Hannity from FOXNEWS is an example of such RACIST people. This man is being paid over $20MM to spew hate!!! Can’t blame him, blame those that follow him and pay his salary.

http://hireheels.com/blog/2008/05/12/holy-gay-choir-boy/
I would think this is all nonsense except for comment #28 by Glen McGahee (june 30) which mentions Joe Biden’s son getting involved to shut up Sinclair.
I should think the gay community would demand the facts, too. I feel so sorry for those young men.
I doubt that the Republican campaign will touch this with a ten foot pole. Their ads against Obama are aimed at children voters and are very mild.

Obama has expanded his lead over McCain in NBC’s latest electoral map: Obama now has 217 electoral votes in his column versus 189 for McCain. Even if you don’t believe in election polls, this at least indicates Americans could care less about racist remarks – time for McCain supporters to discuss the issues that are important to us all and stop the pathetic old school mud slinging.

Evan Bayh worked harder than any Democrat not named Lieberman to ensure that we went to war in Iraq. He co-sponsored the IWR and was personally thanked by George W. Bush in the Rose Garden for his hard work in getting the war started. The selection of Bayh would rob Obama of any credibility on his national security cornerstone- his early opposition to the war. The last thing America needs is another for-it-before-he-was-against-it candidate. Over 70% of Americans now think Bayh was disastrously wrong. And on this, the American people are right.

“Obama has expanded his lead over McCain in NBC’s latest electoral map: Obama now has 217 electoral votes in his column versus 189 for McCain.”
Anyone who would believe anything coming from NBC or MSNBC to be true has the IQ of a brick. They have been in the tank promoting Obama from the beginning. Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman are in absolute, head-over heals in love with Obama. They will do anything for him and have already sold their souls. The “journalists” from this channel graduated from The National Enquirer School of Journalism. There is no longer anything professional or credible that can be attributed to NBC/MSNBC. Nothing.

I’d say Sean Hannity is just as one-sided on the other side. CNN leans toward Obama but aren’s quite as out there as MSNBC is. I flip between Fox and CNN and figure the truth lies somewhere in between. I have completely stopped watching MSNBC tho. They spin anything in favor of Obama 24/7 with the exception of Joe Scarborough, but even at that, he is the “token” anti-Obama employee. Guess they figure that’s their way of balancing things. As I said before, they are wanting in the area of professionalism.

Posted by: Stan | August 6, 2008, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

Obama and Bayh would be an excellent ticket for these reasons: 1) Bayh was a Hillary supporter so this would be seen by Clinton supporters as a way of reaching out to her constituency; 2)Indiana is already in play, and Bayh as VP would make it even more up for grabs; 3) Bayh could help Obama in the neighboring states of OH and MI; and 4) the choice of Bayh gives Obama street-cred on foreign policy, something that he won’t get from Gov. Kaine or Gov. Sibelius.

Posted by: Jake | August 6, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

Whatever happened to Biden for VP? At least someone in the Whitehouse would have some serious foreign affairs cred. Clearly, Obama’s ego is too big to put Hillary on the ticket which would ENSURE a democratic win, but I didn’t think he’d go for lightweights like Bayh or Kaine.

Go Paris…the wrinkly white haired guy really made a huge mistake this time….
How Paris Hilton’s McCain response came about
Paris Hilton is often thought of as a cartoon, the prototypical shallow celebrity. That was certainly one point of John McCain’s commercial featuring her and Britney Spears (and likening Barack Obama to both).
Paris Hilton has responded to John McCain’s ad with her own video.
But upon seeing the McCain ad, director Adam McKay (“Step Brothers,” “Anchorman”) thought of Hilton differently — as an American citizen.
“I was literally in my car and thought Paris must respond. It’s her duty as a citizen,” McKay told CNN. “Within three hours I was on the phone with her and she was into it.”
McKay is also co-founder of FunnyOrDie.com, the comedy video Web site that posted the Hilton video. He observed that the Hilton response was a natural reaction to McCain’s ad.
“McCain made one huge mistake. He drifted into the world of pop culture. And that’s Paris’ world. She owns that world,” he said. “So now he gets the blowback.”
Now that the Hilton video (as expected) has received coverage on mainstream media outlets such as CNN, McKay has bigger plans.
“Our next goal is a town hall style debate between Paris, McCain and that sea creature that washed up in Montauk,” he said.
And could there be more videos?
“We’re praying that Obama does an ad with Screech from ‘Saved by the Bell,’ ” he said. Then he twisted a knife. “Or maybe McCain’s next ad about the trillions we’ve spent on the Iraq war while our economy falls apart will have Janet Jackson or Paula Abdul in it.”

Reading these blogs helps me understand how we ended up in the mess we’re in. Since when did National Enquirer and TMZ become our sources for political information, and since when did the “lowest common denominator” become the devining rod for our presidential elections? We see what that got us 4 years ago, do we really want to go down that road again? I’d much rather my president maybe get a little extra under the desk or experimented with drugs in his youth as opposed to being a total ignoramus with no social skills or a wack-job with anger issues and a Napoleon Complex.

this Dem will not vote for Obama w\out Hillary on the ticket (even then it would be hard). I don’t care if I am bitter and don’t tell me to get over it…I won’t. In my opinion, she was definately the stronger of the 2 candidates. If the media had done their job (and yes, if Hillary and her campaign staff had not underestimated this slimey Chicago politician) then SHE would be the Dem nominee.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks MSNBC and NBC have gone off the deepend on this election. They don’t even make any pretense of impartiality anymore–especially Olberman and Matthews! The other night even Bryan Williams said with a straight face that Obama “refined” his energy policy when he clearly totally CHANGED his position with regard to use of the strategic petroleum reserve and offshore drilling (although he doesn’t really mean it!)I’ve watched NBC news all my life and am switching these days. With Tim Russert gone, there is no point. For the first time in my life I am actually watching FOX News on occasion in addition to CNN.

Since Obama dropped 9 points in one week in the polls, and there are those that seem to think this Paris add is actually going to help Obama in some way, maybe he should consider putting her on the ticket with him. They have a lot of the same friends and they both have the same spending habits. Might just work. Spend, spend, spend, party, party, party.

Bayh is the Republican’s wet dream of a so-called Democratic candidate. And what can he offer that Biden can’t? A pretty haircut and perhaps a silent voice? (And does Obama really want to pick up and dust off what may have been Hillary’s promised VP choice?) It’s just a hug.

Liberals control 80% of the media Americans get hit with every day. And I see libs complain a lot about the media.Yet it is always the conservatives who get the blame? Libs are a twisted bunch. Why don’t libs fix each other and take responsibility for their actions? just like people in prison who won’t accept the fact they put them selves there because they blame others for what they did. and won’t accept the blame for it. Libs are bordering on jail time for the damage they cause.Treason by Harry Reid and the others who have visited and have comforted the enemy with anti American words and actions.

One day I woke up and said you know what I don’t want to get out of bed, I don’t want to have to work for what I get anymore. I’m an American and I deserve to be able to go out to my mail box on the 1st and the 15th of the month and get my check that all of the hard working people in this country are paying for. Why should they get to keep all that money? Just because they worked for it? Not if Obama gets his way!! GO McCain!!! Why would anyone vote for a man who promotes laziness and stagnation of the American people as well as dependency on the government? Why would anyone vote for a man who would punish people for sucess and hard work. We should be trying to lift the people on the bottom up to higher standards, not bring the top down to the bottom… thats what is wrong with our education system (no child left behind…)

Blumpkin – Just like you, Obama also believes America should be trying to lift the people on the bottom up to higher standards, not bring the top down to the bottom. Obama’s education plan proposes to focus on kids to build motivation, emotional stability, and self control. He believes it’s time for intervention at a young age, such as the extremely successful bi-partisan supported Head Start Program. Not only can we make life better for kids at a personal level, but for the economic future of this country. “No Child Left Behind” has worked just about as poorly as Bush’s billions for funding “Abstinence” programs instead of educating kids to make responsible choices with birth control. McCain’s education plan is apparently the same as the last 8 years.

Posted by: The democratic voters want Hillary | August 6, 2008, 3:35 pm 3:35 pm

Mike,
I have to agree with you on some points. Most people in college are liberals, mostly for two reasons. First, as you stated most of their proffessors are liberals and that is what they are being taught and most naive college students believe whatever they are taught. Secondly, On top of the environment they are forced in, most of them have little real world experience and do not see through all of the flaws that their ideas have. It usually takes a little while but after a little while in the work force they realize the errors. So, yes a lot of people start off as leberals due to unbalanced teaching and inexperience, but, those of who work hard for money see no point in giving it to people who do not deserve it. I truly believe that you get out, what you put in. If you are poor, it is because you choose to be!! As for “the libs pride them selves in their vast knowledge over others”…You just keep believing that if it makes you feel better. I personally think it will only keep you away from seeing the truth.

Not sure the VP choice will matter. Another CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll, out Wednesday, showed 48 percent said economic policy would be the most important issue for voters. When it comes to who is the better choice to fix the economy, Obama is their pick by a 54-43 percent margin — with a margin of error at plus or minus 3 percent.

Posted by: CaliRules | August 6, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

Anybody who was for Hillary and now wants McCain is an idiot!! How can you agree with ANY of McCain’s policies? It’s that sane illogical thinking that got America in the mess it’s in right now. I’m sorry about your spilt milk Hillary supporters but Obama is your man. Like it or not, their policies are 99% alike. Whether he picks her or not (most likely the latter), he is still the best candidate and most like Hillary.

CNN’s “poll of polls” consists of four surveys: CNN/Opinion Research Corp. (July 27-29),
AP-IPSOS (July 31-August 4), USA Today/Gallup (July 25-27) and Gallup tracking (August 2-4).

Wow. It’s amazing how… for lack of a better term –stupid– so many of you that post here are.
It’s about policy. Not zingers or innuendo or malicious speculation about motives or silly implications based on ancient associations.
McCain will attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade. Obama attempt to reinforce Roe v. Wade.
Obama will provide tax relief to the bottom 95% of income earners, and increase the tax burden of the top 5% of earners, and start a large public works program to stimulate the economy. McCain will reduce the tax burden of the top 5% of wage earners, as well as of multi-national corperations to stimulate the economy.
For energy policy, Obama will push for comprehensive portfolio of energy resources that has more renewables in the mix (slightly more expensive in the short run, less so in the long run); McCain will do the same, but with more fossile fuels in the mix (slightly less expensive in the short run, more so in the long run).
Both want what is best for America.
Both are patriots.
Pull your heads out of your asses, people, and start getting your news from multiple and diverse sources, not just from individual, one-sided partisan blowhard.

You hyperfocus on anything Obama, with plenty of mindless speculation, but where is your companion McCain story?
Why is McCain getting a free ride? Why is he not receiving the same level of scrutiny? Tim Pawlenty, possible McCain VP choice, praised Barack Obama and his positive campaign yesterday. Why is this not interesting, but paragraphs of vague speculation about Obama’s potential VP’s is the highlighted story?
There appears to be imbalance here.
It looks like you are on Obama “gotcha watch” while you ignore McCain and any potential McCain “gotcha.”

I was for Senator Clinton before I was against Senator Obama. See, I can flip-flop just like Obama.
I am an independant and try very hard to search out and vote for the best candidate. With the net and 24/7 news channels, there is certainly a lot of information out there but one must determine which facts or true or false.
Now, I don’t put as much credence on MSN as I used to. They definitely have their favorite candidate and refuse to vet the opponent. They only report the poll numbers when their candidate is ahead. It would be great to have straight, honest news but that has not happened with MSM this election.

Posted by: Mary | August 6, 2008, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

Go to the McCain and Obama websites and look at the policy sections.
For analysis, watch O’Rielly on Fox, then Olbermann on MSNBC. See who you think is more full of it. The truth lie in between. Keep an open mind.
Remember, it’s about POLICY.

That will show Princess Dianna’s two boys what service to country is all about. The GOP has the right idea. Start a war and let the other guys children fight it. We need to know answers to many questions about Obama. How close was his relationship to communist Frank Marshall Davis when he was a teen in Hawaii (Obama’s book says very close – we need details)? How close was Obama to Marxist terrorists Ayers and Doerhn? If Obama says not close, we need an answer as to why his political career was launched in Ayer’s living room. Why did Obama decide to go to Chicago after graduating college? Was it because Davis was from Chicago originally? How did it happen that Obama became an Alinsky type community organizer in Chicago, just like Davis once was? Did Davis initiate the relationship between Obama and Ayers? All of these important questions and many others need to be answered. Why is the media ignoring them???

Obama should pick Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, as his VP. She’s young, smart, energetic, popular, and a Republican. Talk about reaching across the aisle! ~lol~
She’s been talked about as a potential McCain running mate, but I doubt he’d choose a woman. I like her though, even though I don’t agree with her pro-life stance or her opposition to gay marriage. (Hey, nobody’s perfect!) But she sticks to issues that matter most to the citizens of Alaska, which is why she is so popular. She’d be good for many reasons.

Obama has shady friends and marxist views. Everyone will see it. That’s why his poll numbers are down. His snobbery and arrogance will be his undoing. This always catches up to them (left). The media loves Obama, but the American people will see right thru this empty suit. Not even Bayh or Kaine will help him.He does more flip flopping than Kerry. A community organizer does not qualify a person for President.

Truman seemed to be a cool guy. Barrack Obama is a total coward. Why send Truman Burgess to tear up Sean Hannity? He challenged Hannity so he should debate Hannity and answer the tough questions.

Jenelle Dew,
You are just plain ignorant. How in the hell can Obama hate any dam body when his mother, grandmother & grandfather are white. His daughters have African blood pumping through their veins, they are Black. You can tell he was raised in the United States of America by his articulation. Especially today, everyone is frustrated with the “American” economy so because we complain do that make us unpatriotic. If all we know, his white family probable was ostricised back in “those” days. After colonial rule of African countries during the ’60s, Europe & America allowed the poor to get educated to help build their countries. His grandfather was WWII vet with a GI bill to boot. that created a middle class life style. Black liberation theology has been taught since Slavery & Jim Crow (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, MLK). Rev Wright don’t have a thing to do with Obama getting this far, God fearing WHITE and BLACK Americans do. I remember when black people was not “allowed” to go into white churches. Go read a book on History then you will understand what’s going on in America and the world. Heck I don’t believe in every policy Obama or McCain spew, but I will not talk like they are UNAMERICAN. Because his father was a Muslim do not make Obama Muslim, he was raised in a WHITE MIDDLE CLASS family and back in “those” days they knew little about being a Muslim in Kansas. That type of law exists in the African and Arab countries not here in America.

A leader with a vision for rebuilding american infrastructure, creating new jobs, and improve government administration.
Improve education clearly needed judging from the comments left here.
A people who cannot use critical thinking to make decisions for what is best for the country, rather than follow outdated ideology of the past century are destined to fail.
The only time in the lat 30 year we had a balanced budget was with Clinton.
The last 30 years have seen billions of money budgeted for renewal energy and very little has been accomplished, where all the money go?
Look at the facts people…we need to think 21 century…and move on.

I will not vote Obama or McCain. Obama is eloquent, smart & articulate & a lot of his policies are close to Hillary’s. But some have changed already, no? I’m talking within, what, 2 weeks, he had changed his stance from what he platformed during the nomination process. Yeah, it’s about policy, but it’s also about character. No candidate I’ve seen actually has character as a virtue, per se, so I’m not talking about character as a noun. I’m talking about not just paying attention to policy, but also to body language, how a candidate phrases answers, power words he uses, how he uses his facial expressions & which expressions while saying what, & then, of course, pay attention to your own gut instinct. Yep, I said it. Your Gut instinct. So, sure policy’s important, but if the only person left changes the policies I thought I was shifting for, then I have to suspect he may not be my candidate. I’d rather have Hillary & I’ll vote for Obama, but only if I begin to trust his character even only as much as one can trust the character of a politician. Right now, my instincts say he is much like Republicans during Bush’s runs. Slick, savvy & knows what to say & how to say it, & how to look like it.
I ain’t votin’ for that.

doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
