Obama, Biden Congratulate Palin
At Pennsylvania Biodiesel Inc. in Monaca, Penn., this afternoon, Sens. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and Joe Biden, D-Del., congratulated Gov. Sarah Palin, the new running mate of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
"I haven’t met her before," Obama said. "She seems like a compelling person … with a terrific personal story. I’m sure that she will help make the case for Republicans.
"Unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket," Obama said. "He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I’m assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies. But the fact that she … will soon be nominated … is one more indicator of this country moving forward … one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."
Added Biden, "I’m looking forward to meeting her."
Then this afternoon, from his campaign bus, Obama called Palin. Per Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs, Obama told her she would be a terrific candidate and that he looked forward to seeing her on the campaign trail. He also wished her good luck — but not too much luck.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Yes, but let’s repeat what Zerobameus and company have said, before they realized their classless nature.
McCain congratulated Zerobameus on his nomination, but in return, this is what McCain got on choosing his running mate:
“Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency,” said Obama spox Bill Burton.
You may dislike women, you may not want their votes, but she is the elected, Honorable Governor of one of our 50 states in the Union.

Dems cannot argue her lack of experience because Obama is himself lack of experience…
Dems’ ticket is in-experienced one trying to lead experienced people… Who will you trust…
Reps can fight back every single issue from Obama… What will Obama be more superior??

Obama’s initial statement this morning about the Palin announcement was an insult (again) to people living in small towns and to women in general.
The only reason Obama softened his tone is because someone on the plane said: “ppst – you’ve already ticked off women and small town people. Are you SURE you don’t want to call Sarah and congratulate her”.
And in view of the fact that McCain spent MONEY on ad buys congratulating Obama on his historic achievement, Obama’s initial response is all the more tasteless, classless and mysogynistic.

I’ve been laughing listening to all the libs manufacture this faux worry that Sarah Palin doesn’t have much experience.
Apparently Democrats are just fine with the fact that their presidential candidate has zero experience.
But they’re having meltdowns over the fact that Republicans VP candidate doesn’t have much experience.

Obama has never run anything. Not a budget, a state, or a business. Obama is one voice and one vote out of 99 others.
Sarah Palin has run a state for 2 years and successfully too. She has a high approval ratings, has cut the budget by over 10% and gone up against the big guys in the government for graft and corruption.

It’s a sad day in America when a Presidential nominee who has run his campaign on experience and judgement chooses to use his VP selection as a gimmick to win in November. That’s not putting a nation first – that’s putting an election first.

You may disagree in policy, but this is what a class act like, Mr. Zerobameus:
“We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin’s historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain,” Clinton, the first woman to win a presidential primary, said in the statement. “While their policies would take America in the wrong direction, Governor Palin will add an important new voice to the debate.”

John McCain has made a mockery of the political process. If Clinton had not been involved in this election process, there is NO chance Palin is the pick. She is a first term governor of a state with the population of Austin, TX. He other qualifications? Mayor of a town of 9,000, she kept a child with down sydrome (admirable, but again, not a qualification to be VP), and apparently she likes to hunt and was in a beauty pageant once. This is a completely irresponsible move. The VP HAS to be able to fill in as president. Joe Biden fits that bill; Palin doesn’t come close.

LeeLee07: You are so right. I would like to have seen their faces also since they didn’t want Hillary to be the nominee. I understand that Palin can match Biden toe to toe when it comes to a debate. I believe her to be more experienced than Obama because she went from Mayor to Governor and now VP for McCain. Obama has missed the senate 130 times did not vote against the war because he wasn’t there for the voting. And the public believes every word out of his mouth. I don’t believe there were 85 thousand in that Arena maybe more like 50 thousand. The news media always inflates crowds for Obama and Jack Cafferty only reads what they say against McCain but rarely against Obama. He is pro-obama and Wolf was a Hillary supporter. Jack Cafferty has no manners what so ever and should be replaced.

Gopi: That’s where your wrong. Palin has more experience than Obama ever will have unless he gets extensive help from Biden. I understand Biden has 36 years experience but shouldn’t Obama have experience being in the senate for three years. I know he has been absent 130 times and did not vote against the war because he wasn’t there for the voting. Palin went from Mayor to Governor? What has Obama accomplished? Nothing!!

Can somebody tell me how running a state of 700 000 people for 18 months is an experience for veep.
Even Obama`s 8 years as Illinois senator and 4 years in the US senate is far more impressive than Palin`s thin resume.
Again Obama`s Senate area Chicago alone is 2 000 000 in population.
Palin has zero experience in national politics.

He still wouldn’t be able to make decisions if elected Biden would have to run the country.

“I know he has been absent 130 times and did not vote against the war because he wasn’t there for the voting.”
Mariann,
You know things that are not true.
Obama while serving 8 years in the IL legislature as a Senator voted present (the equivalent of a no vote) 130 times out of 4000 votes.
He spoke passionately against the war in Iraq but he was a state senator at the time and was not in the US Senate to vote on the IWR.
in 2004 he was elected to the US Senate and served his 1st Congressional session (2 years a piece) missing only 11 votes (1 of the highest participation rates). In the latest session of Congress he has missed 45% of the votes.
In comparison McCain has missed 63% of the votes this current session.

gallup has an interesting article analyzing what mccain is likely thinking. he leads obama among whites nationally – especially white men. white independent women are basically split in half on the two candidates. there are no gender differences among blacks and latinos in terms of their support. mccain is trying to get the independent women’s vote. he is trying to shift over enough of them to win. some of them are pro-life. not all. it may not be about clinton’s democratic women’s support – but those who are independent, who may have wanted a woman….and who, as independents, are less partisan.

A note for you all regarding the meaning of “experience”:
Do you know the difference between executive experience and the life of a legislator? You do realize that the job in question here is an executive position? Palin has 12 years of executive experience in government – 10 as mayor, 2 as governor.
Obama has no government executive experience at all. Obama does have 5 years of executive experience as the head of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which, by the foundation’s own measure, achieved “little” and spent over 100 million dollars under Obama’s direction to do so.
Compare Palin’s record as mayor and governor to Obama’s record as leader of the CAC. Despite the Obama Campaign’s cries of no experience and otherwise, only Palin has significant elected official executive experience.
Regarding non-elected official experience, Obama has the CAC, and whatever his functions were at the Harvard Law Review. McCain has 5 years running the largest fighter/bomber squadron in the Navy.
You Decide.

So let me get this straight. If we vote McCain we have to worry if he dies in office and get the “inexperienced” Palin.
However if we elect Obama, we get “inexperienced” from Day One. So in other words, with Obama/Biden, we have to wait till Obama dies to get the one who knows what he’s doing.
Uh, gosh. That’s a tough one.

Liberal media logic:
After Obama’s 2004 convention speech:
“Wow, this guy is good, maybe he should be running for president”
McCain picks a woman (a historic first for the GOP) who has been in charge of Alaska for almost 2 years and who is also a great speaker and has shaken up the system, made lots of reforms and cleaned up politics in her state. And who is basically an expert on energy policy.
“Gosh, what has she done? What makes her qualified?”

Well folks hang on to your hats because the research is already coming in!!!!
Former Beauty Queen, just like Cindy McCain!
Former Sports Caster, who’s dream was to work for ESPN.
Former PTA member and “hockey mom.”
Former City counsel member (4 years) and small town Mayor (2 years)
Governor of the most backwards and least populous state in the nation for a whole 20 months. The Alaskan state government meets 90 days a year!
In 2006, get this… SHE WAS FOR THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE!!! But today she said in her acceptance speech she was against it!
Against polar bears on the endangered species list…
Believes there is NO SUCH THING AS GLOBAL WARMING!!
Is firmly anti-abortion and want to repeal Roe v Wade!
And last but not least she called Hillary a “Whinner” during the primaries!!!!!!!
She now wants all the Hillary PUMA fans to support her and McBush!!
So how about it PUMA gals? Hillary is a WHINER right? Sarah Palin says so!!!
Stay tuned, the research is going 100 mph on Palin right now – certainly there will be a lot more details coming in the next few days!

Oh yeah the fact that the MSM doesn’t rebutt this ridiculous assertion that Palin is unqualified when obama gave a speech and was declared the next POTUS by them is risible. They are a joke, not journalists and not political scientists, of which Sarah Palin is both. Not only governor and mayor with 8 years moe executive experience than Obama, but a political journalist as well. Maybe she can tell these guys how to do their job. They need it. obama’s comments were sexist and demeaning and laughably unable to see his own inexperience.

After only about 17 months in office, Obama felt he was ready to be president.

Marianne –
No doubt, the Republicans are supporting this woman, and rightfully so. She is more qualified than either Biden OR Obama. Personally, I don’t think the lady is going to have any problem with debating Biden at the one VP debate Obama agreed to.
Last night, I also heard Obama, again, throw out the challenge to McCain that he is willing to debate him anytime. I do hope McCain takes him up on that offer and make him step up to the plate.
Obama, in his infinite wisdom and good judgment, opened the door by not selecting Hillary as his VP and McCain took that opening.
I imagine both Obama and the DNC are feeling pretty much “p u n k e d” at this moment.
Palin is not Hillary, but she “will do well enough,” yes, I believe she will “do” just fine.

This choice of VP was made based on defense. They have been in defense mode for so long (trying to counter Obama’s success), I’m not surprised that this major decision was made considering what the Dems are doing more so than what the Republican base really wants. McCain cannot win for Republicans by trying to court liberal Hillary supporters. The choice of Palin is an insult to those women. The women who supported Hillary did so because of her unique qualities, not just because she is a female. This is not a “any woman will do” situation. He could have at least picked someone with sufficient experience like Kay Bailey. Add to that McCain’s camp saying that Obama lacks experience…um…there goes that. AND, he’d only met Palin 2 times prior to today. Sad!

LeeLee07,
Let’s be honest here. McCain is 72 years old today, at the end of his first term he will be 77 years old if he makes it…
He is a 4 time cancer survivor, of melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer there is…
John McCain just picked a young woman with no international or foreign policy experience. If McCain dies in office the VP must be ready to step into the presidency at a moments notice and run and protect our country.
John McCain says country first, but he did not put “his country first” in his decision today…
Soon all of America will figure this beauty queen is not ready to be our “commander and chief” and McCain will lose…
No matter how loud you PUMAs scream for her, or how much the Republicans spin this – it comes down to this one central point, is Palin ready to be commander and chief?
I know Biden is, and so do the American people!
Say hello to President Obama!!!!!!!!!!!

You and your kind have been downgrading Hillary Clinton for months and now you bring her up as a defense for the very sexist Obama who didn’t hesitate to chop her into pieces. What’s wrong with you people?
Posted by: PUMA for Palin | August 29, 2008, 9:05 pm 9:05 pm
I think McCain has taken this pick to show just how stupid he thinks the country really is. He did it for his own perverted enjoyment so he can laugh at all you idiots that will vote for him because she’s a woman and good looking. And he want’s to drill in Anwar so bad the oil companies probably have her in their pockets too. This is an oil company pick and McCain’s last hope to get Hillary’s vote. He knows he’s in trouble. This was a desparate move, and a bad one. People don’t want her for President or Vice President, they wanted the Clintons. And what’s going to happen if McCain dies. He’ll be almost 80 before he finishes his first term. How much longer do you think he has? That’s all we need a senile, old man a pretty looking woman that has no idea what she would be doing. LOL :) I think McCain is giving up. He doesn’t want to be president, he wants Barack too. This is a forfeit move.

McCain is in over his head

He is just going through the
motions of running for POTUS.
When he picked Palin, it wasn’t
done in a senior moment. He wants

McCain may be a lot older, but
her views on social and women’s
issues are far more antiquated
than his.

Wow. Bold, risky, brilliant choice by McCain. He’s still a maverick.
It’s a missed opportunity for the Democrats to allow the GOP to be the first to have a female crack the glass ceiling.
Smart acknowledgment of Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton. The DNC could learn a lesson in respecting the females of their party. Hillary Clinton deserved respect and equal opportunity in 2008 and she received neither from the DNC, Obama or the media. It’s time to hold them accountable. To vote for Obama is to condone what they have done. Don’t do it. Send a clear message.
Women will not be taken for granted, we will not be told to shut up and get in line behind Obama. The old hook of Roe v Wade won’t work in 2008. The U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe right now if they wanted to, they have the votes. They do not. The real battle for abortion rights is being right now in every statehouse in this country. If abortion your issue, that’s where you need to get involved. Women’s issues begin with respect and equal opportunity.
As a young person, a volunteer, who proudly stood on stage with Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 I never would have imagine it would take another 24 years to see another woman on a national ticket and that it would NOT be my Demcratic party. Damn the Dems.
Hillary should be the nominee.
Obama-Biden ticket is a loser. Obama is neither qualified or electable.
Hillary gets over 18 million votes, winning MORE votes than ANY candidate of ANY party in history and she’s NOT on the ticket????? The Dems are nuts.
Missed opportunities indeed. Hold the DNC accountable for this 2008 campaign debacle filled with sexism, classism, racism, voter disenfranchisement and subversion of democracy.
McCain 08 and Hillary 2012. Country first, party second.

Why is Mrs. Palin a good choice?
1. She helps consolidate and energize the Republican base.
2. Her records help rejuvenate McCain’s maverick brand. The independents and the conservative/moderate Democrats have been disillusioned. They really don’t believe in Obama’s promises, in his readiness for presidency. What they worry about is McCain being another Bush, not McCain being the Unqualified. It is they who will determine this election.
This decision shows us McCain’s judgment, guts, and vigor. This is not a decision that can be made by a decrepit old man, and the voters will come to appreciate that.

The Democratic Convention made a mockery and foolish decision by selecting Barack Obama. He had only 143 days in Washington before declaring his candidacy for President. He has no foreign affairs experience unless you count his demanding a big stage in Berlin and shaking hands with the stage crew. His state senate district lost 11% of their jobs during his 8 years in control and crime and poverty problems rose. SAD indeed.
Now this corrupt candidate from south Chicago is belittling Sarah Palin and her small town achievements. Her achievements overshadow Obama’s by 10 to l.
Senator McCain and Governor Palin are excellent choices over the socialist and Washington insider.
I for one would certainly trust Palin over Obama in foreign affairs. He would invite the terrorists in for drinks and steaks, maybe even hire a band before telling them to STOP. Remember, one of his very best friends and supporters is a terrible terrorist who wishes he would have done more before getting caught. Some friends of Obama like Rezko and Rev. Wright make the average person shudder in disgust.
I will vote for the hero candidate, not the zero candidate. Palin has much more experience as Governor of Alaska than all Obama’s 143 days as Washington senator.

In fact, has anyone seen or talked to her? Just curious of why he is hiding her away, must have the poor thing locked up in her house, so she wont’ reveal anything troubling about his past or birth, no doubt. Suspicious, as with many things in Obama’s life.

If you had actually listend to the speech, you wouldn’t have to ask thaqt question about his granmother:
“And when I hear a woman talk about the difficulties of starting her own business, I think about my grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle-management, despite years of being passed over for promotions because she was a woman. She’s the one who taught me about hard work. She’s the one who put off buying a new car or a new dress for herself so that I could have a better life. She poured everything she had into me. This does not sound like someone who has much family value. She made a decision I would have and decided to have her child but will not let someone else raise him?

please some of you (on this blog tonight) have been posting and spewing brutal, vile, sexist, bigioted, comments against hillary and her supporters for months. but now you hold hillary as the standard bearer for women in politics. how phony can you get.

Obama’s attack dogs criticize Palin’s lack of ‘experience’. Last year, she signed into law a state budget of $6.6 billion, the largest in Alaska’s history.
Question: what’s the biggest budget Obama (or Biden) has ever administered? Was it his community organizer’s budget , or was it the $300k he got from Tony Rezko? Inquiring minds would like to know.

alice please remember that biden left his two sons to pursue his political career and took the oath at his sons bed after the tragic accident that killed their mother, and sister. leaving them to cope with the loss. by what i can tell they did just fine, as will palen’s child.
i get the feeling some of the sexist folks on this blog believe that a woman’s place is at home, barefoot, and pregnant. how dare a woman pursue a career eh! i bet most of the women on this blog are employed and have kids as well. how tragic to hear women make comments like this.

I wasn’t more than two or three months ago that Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden were saying that Obama was not qualified to be president. Yet now, just two or three months later, all three are saying that Obama is not only qualified to be president, but they are all urging his election. I guess I have to ask that old trial attorney cross-examination question, “Were they lying then or are they lying now?”

As I said before, Obama should go back to Chicago and take his wife with him! Obama and his supporters just don’t get it and are still slamming women negatively. The only thing they will understand is that they do not get Obama elected in November! Go McCain! I will be registering as a Republican because that is how disgusted I have become with the Democratic party and their treatment of the Clintons and their treatment of women! They should be ashamed of themselves. There is an expression that states you don’t bite the hand that feeds you. And, there is one that states it is a stupid bird that poops in its own nest. Well, Obama has pooped all over us ladies. What is it going to be? This sexist elitist or an older, seasoned gentleman. You get inexperience with Obama and they are running him as commander in chief. His vice president is as old as McCain. McCain is older, Palin is younger. So what? It is 6 of 1 or half a dozen of another. Let’s get McCain elected ladies! If something happens to Obama and he leaves an old VP to fill in than something can happen to him.

After even one day, we have already found Palin lying twice:
Despite initially denying that she had exorted pressure on Walter Monegan, she had to acknowlegde that it ‘might’ be interpreted as pressure after dozens of tapes were released but that she’s as pure as the Alaskan snow and did not mean it. Oh, and she’s a mother of five.
And she lied about her support of the Bridges to Nowhere. She did not oppose them, she had to scrap them because she couldn’t find the funds. But that’s okay because she’s a mother of five and has a son with Syndrome of Down.
We all know the drill.

The disrespect ABC is showing Gov. Palin is beyond disgusting ABC Headline: Palin “Dan Qualye in a dress”? Would ABC be showing such disrespect to Sen, Obama? I think not. It is one of the main reasons so many Hillary supporters view the mainstream media as bias and sexist. The fact is Gov. Palin has more executive experience than Obama. The only executive experience Obama has had is with the Annenberg Challenge. which was a failure. Not only that Obama was a member of the Anenberg Challenge with Bill Ayers, an unrepentant domestic terrorist, who Obama claimed was “just a guy in his neighborhood” The fact the mainstream media is not covering this story stinks to high heaven. Thank goodness there are other outlets that are getting the word out about Obama’s associations with far left radicals who hate America. If ABC was doing their job, they would be investigating whose pockets the Annenberg 110 million dollars went into. It smells to high heaven. What is so scary is that. a community organizer who got his executive experience overseeing a failed educational program is claiming that two years as governor of one of our largest states is not sufficient executive experience The fact ABC is acting like a lap dog to the Obama ”s Party line of Gov. Palin’s so called lack of experience is beyond belief. Unless we are witnessing the Pravda news media ealready in full bloom under the boot of Obama and his henchmen.

Hihihi.
this is what Dear Karl said when there was talk Obama could pick Tim Kaine. Oh the irony:
“With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished. I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America. And again, with all due respect to Richmond, Virginia, it’s smaller than Chula Vista, California; Aurora, Colorado; Mesa or Gilbert, Arizona; north Las Vegas or Henderson, Nevada. It’s not a big town. So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I’m really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States?”

it is even insulting to compare her with Dan Qualye. Dan Qualye is more qualified than her…and i agree with Andrew Sullivan when he stated that “Think about what the Palin pick really says about how McCain views this campaign and how he views his potential responsibilities in national security.
Think about what it says about the sincerity of McCain’s own central criticism of Obama these past two months in foreign affairs.
Think about how he picked a woman to be a heartbeat away from a war presidency who hadn’t even thought much, by her own admission, about the Iraq war as late as 2007.
Think about how he made this decision barely knowing the woman.
Think about the fact that the most McCain could say about his potential war-time vice-president in foreign affairs and national security when selecting her is that she commanded Alaska’s National Guard as governor and has a son in the military.
Think about the men and women serving this country who have every right to trust that their potential commander-in-chief, whatever their party, would have some record of even interest in foreign policy before assuming office.
Think about how the key factor in this decision was not who could defend this country were something dreadful happen to McCain in office but how to tread as much on Obama’s convention bounce and use women’s equality as a wedge issue among Democrats because it might secure a few points here or there. Oh, and everyone would be surprised. And even Rove would be annoyed.
This is his sense of honor and judgment. This is his sense of responsibility and service.

I am a life-long Democrat. I’ve never been a fan of Obama but, until now, I haven’t really felt comfortable about voting Republican. McCain/Palin is clearly not the same old Republican ticket. They have both bucked their party to do what is right and their focus on reining in government spending is key. They’ve got my vote. Combine Obama/Biden with a Democratic congress and we will exprience a government spending frenzy when we can least afford it.

FormerDem, the ‘country first’ slogan orginally led me to believe that McCain might be a different kind of Republican, since their slogan has been ‘party first’ for so many years. Then I looked at the record. In the last decade or so, McCain has been changing everything to line up with the party and this year voted with Bush 100% of the time (when he showed up that is, he hasn’t been to work in five months), and last year 95%, the year before 90% – you get the idea.
Despite the ‘country first’ slogan, I think he’s really the same old same old.

Putting aside the creepiness of a top McCain adviser having to reassure the nation that McCain, at 72 years of age with four bouts of cancer, won’t die in office, what Charlie Black said today was particularly damning of McCain’s VP choice, Sarah Palin:
Mr. McCain’s advisers said Friday that Mr. McCain was well aware that Ms. Palin would be criticized for her lack of foreign policy experience, but that he viewed her as exceptionally talented and intelligent and that he felt she would be able to be educated quickly.
“She’s going to learn national security at the foot of the master for the next four years, and most doctors think that he’ll be around at least that long,” said Charlie Black, one of Mr. McCain’s top advisers, making light of concerns about Mr. McCain’s health, which Mr. McCain’s doctors reported as excellent in May.
So Black, the guy who said another 9/11-style attack on America would help McCain’s campaign, is saying that McCain’s VP doesn’t know a thing about national security, but she can learn on the job over the next four years, you know, like night school. We’re at war. And they’re admitting that Palin may be our next commander in chief on day one, if McCain were to die or fall ill in office, yet she knows nothing about national security, and has never met a world leader. I, a blogger, have met more world leaders than McCain’s VP.* Chew on that.

Kelly, All your arguments could be applied to Obama supporters and the Democratic Party. The only difference is they would all be true.
It is even insulting to compare Obama with Dan Qualye. Dan Qualye is more qualified than Obama…and i agree with Andrew Sullivan when he stated that “Think about what the Obama pick really says about how Obama supporters views this campaign and how they views Obama’s potential responsibilities in national security.
Think about what it says about Obama’s supporters central defense that Obama is qualified in foreign affairs when he is not.
Think about how Obama supporters picked Obama to be a war time president who has no military or executive experience.
Think about how Obama supporters made this decision barely knowing Obama and his background other than Rev. Wright, God D### America, Ayers ” I wished I could have bombed more. etc etc etc. The list of anti-American leftist radicals who are friends of Obama goes on and on.
Think about the fact that most Obama supporters cannot give any example of Obama’s potential war-time President experience. Obama can’t even say he commanded the National Guard as a Governor.
Think about the men and women serving this country who have every right to trust that their potential commander-in-chief, whatever their party, would have some record in foreign policy before assuming office. Obama has none.
Think about how the key factor in the Obama supporters decision to support Obama is not is ability to defend this country it is his race. The message of the Dems and the media: “This is a historical choice the first black nominated for President”
Where is the Obama supporters sense of honor and judgment. Where is the Obama supporters sense of responsibility and service.
Here’s the real slogan the Obama campaign should now adopt:

On experience I also agree with Andrew Sullivan when he stated that “It occurs to me that some on the right actually think that Obama is as inexperienced and as trivial a figure as Palin. So ask yourself: could Sarah Palin have run a national election campaign against, say, a machine as powerful as the Bush family, and won? Does she have the skill set to construct a campaign that would actually have brought her to the nomination herself? I find the comparison with Obama ludicrous. But it will be made. Palin looks to me like a lovely person and a good local politician, with some inevitable rough spots. I’d be delighted if she took a leadership role in the GOP in the future. But in the same league as Obama? Do Republicans really think that little of him? I guess they do. We are looking at a different person.” Republicans have no answer to this question and i challenge them to answer it…if they can
Posted by: Kelly | August 30, 2008, 12:31 am 12:31 am
Kelly, the problem with your argument is that Palin is more qualified to be President than Obama. Obama has no executive experience unless you count his experience as the head of the failed Annenberg challenge that was a failure and know one to date, knows whose pocket the 110 million dollars that was wasted on the programs went into.

McCain has just lost all the moderate Republican women who dont want to be pandered to and dont want a radical, anti-choice ticket.
In a gubernatorial debate, Palin stated emphatically that her opposition to abortion was so great, so total, that even if her teenage daughter was impregnated by a rapist, she would “choose life” — meaning apparently that she would not permit her daughter to have an abortion.

McCain doesn’t have any executive experience either.
When Tim Kaine came out and only suggested he was being vetted for the VP slot the conservatives came out in great numbers labeling him as an inexperienced candidate. These are the sames conservative now touting Palin “experience” who has far more less experience then Kaine.
Palin:
Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska for 8 years. An estimated population of 8,000.
Govenor of Alaska for one and a half years. Population of 683,478.
Kaine:
Member of the Richmond City Council for 4 years.
76th Mayor of Richmond, Virginia for 2 years. Population of 200,123.
38th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia for four years.
70th Governor of Virginia for 2 years. Population of 7,712,091.
Tim Kaine experience far exceeds Palin but I guess it’s okay because she a republican. This is very hypocritical of all the conservative commenters who were going after Kaine and are now kissing Palin’s ass.
This was a bad choice by McCain. McCain is 72 years and has battled with cancer numerous times. Instead of picking Romney; someone with actually experience and whom can be trust if something god forbid happens to McCain he goes for a women in hopes of pandering to the womens base.
Biden will take her apart in a debate on foreign policy. No matter how inexperience you believe Obama to be he has been in elected office for 12 years , has met with foreign leaders and has proven he stand with our allies on global crisis.
McCain has just handed Obama the election

Sam and Mary, this blog from conservative DAVID FRUM’S DIARY answer your question….
The longer I think about it, the less well this selection sits with me. And I increasingly doubt that it will prove good politics. The Palin choice looks cynical. The wires are showing.
John McCain wanted a woman: good.
He wanted to keep conservatives and pro-lifers happy: naturally.
He wanted someone who looked young and dynamic: smart.
And he discovered that he could not reconcile all these imperatives with the stated goal of finding a running mate qualified to assume the duties of the presidency “on day one.”
Sarah Palin may well have concealed inner reservoirs of greatness. I hope so! But I’d guess that John McCain does not have a much better sense of who she is, what she believes, and the extent of her abilities than my enthusiastic friends over at the Corner. It’s a wild gamble, undertaken by our oldest ever first-time candidate for president in hopes of changing the board of this election campaign. Maybe it will work. But maybe (and at least as likely) it will reinforce a theme that I’d be pounding home if I were the Obama campaign: that it’s John McCain for all his white hair who represents the risky choice, while it is Barack Obama who offers cautious, steady, predictable governance.
Here’s I fear the worst harm that may be done by this selection. The McCain campaign’s slogan is “country first.” It’s a good slogan, and it aptly describes John McCain, one of the most self-sacrificing, gallant, and honorable men ever to seek the presidency.
But question: If it were your decision, and you were putting your country first, would you put an untested small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?

Wasilla has 5,500 people. It is basically a strip mall with one bar.
Posted by: Mike | August 30, 2008, 12:41 am 12:41 am
Flash Override, Wrong I am pro choice and I love Palin. In a free Nation if that is Palin’s view that is her right. As to the tired old fear tactic that conservative justices will over turn Roe Wade. Very unlikely. However, even if that happened it would go back to the States and the peoples reps would decide, not judges. In that case, the only State that might place some serious restrictions on abortion would be Utah, and most moderate women do not live in Utah.

ONCE again, Vanessa, and everyone else who are just loving attacking Palin, or the size of Alaska, or the size of Wasilla, you STILL have not address the primary question:
Name ONE Obama accomplishment that qualifies him more to be President, than Palin for VP?????
In case you missed it:
Palin has managed and administered a 6 BILLION dollar budget.
Has Obama even balanced his checkbook?
Palin has commandered the Alaska National Guard, and visited troops in Kuwait and Landstuhl.
Obama hasn’t commandeered anything, and ignored troops in Landstuhl.
Palin has managed the state with our largest natural resource, and one that will control our future and economy: OIL.
Obama:?????????
I say: STOP criticizing Palin, until you have ONE, just ONE, accomplishment that supports executive experience.
Just one!!!

Sara, pro-choice people understand that limiting access to abortion services is anti-choice. 87% of US counties do not have a provider to perform abortions. This is a primary factor in the (admittedly miniscule) number of late term abortions.

Kelly, Your argument about concerns about Palin fitness to be the VP are better applied to Obama. Country first. Obama has too little experience and too many skeletons in his closet to be handed the keys to the oval office.

decentAmerican,
Using the same yardstick McCain is also not qualified to be president since he too lacks executive experince.

Kelly,
Excellent post. McCain has battled cancer before and god forbid he becomes ill and passes away. Can we trust this women to handle Afganistan, Iraq, Iran, and Russia?
Governing a state with the population of 700,000 for a year and a half does not qualify as “real” executive experience.
This goes to the core of McCain judgement that he would chose this women in which he has only met ONCE before last week to lead this nation if he were to pass during his presidency.
Biden will point this out during the VP debate by his knowledge on the issues and her lack of knowledge.
I have no doubt that she is smart but is she ready? Is she ready to meet with world leaders and discuss global crisis?
This choice will hurt McCain with the independent vote.

Well then, Kelly, kindly tell us what “yardstick” you obama supporters are using? You gleefully attack Palin’s experience, but then you run like lost puppies when asked to present some evidence of Obama’s experience.
If Palin is inexperienced, then so is Obama.
If Obama is experienced, then so is Palin.
WHICH IS IT????? PICK ONE, NOW, AND GET ON WITH IT!!!!

Some of Senator Obama’s accomplishments:
Graduating from Harvard Law School, serving as President of its Law Review, and teaching Constitutional law at the University of Chicago for over a decade
Becoming elected to the State Legislature of Illinois, America’s 5th most populous state
He got laws passed that prevented police brutality (with strong bipartisan support), gave an earned income tax credit to low income workers, and profoundly reformed campaign finance law in Illinois.
As a US Senator for Illinois, America’s 5th largest state, he worked with Republicans to pass laws to secure loose nukes, pass transparency in government laws, and limit no-bid federal contracts.
In foreign policy he prudently opposed the Iraq War as a dumb war, and he correctly called for time frames for withdrawal for Iraq and for talks with Iran, policies even the Bush Administration are now following.
He led a grassroots campaign that defeated the Clinton political machine.
He has made an excellent choice for Vice President, a man who can be trusted to lead the United States of America.
McCain, on the other hand, has betrayed all of America by picking someone to be a heartbeat from the Presidency who has no more formal education than a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.
Someone whose major work experience is being mayor of a town of about 8000 people, and who has about a year and a half experience governing a state which has far fewer people than San Francisco.
Could McCain prove his unfitness to lead this great country any more convincingly?
Posted by: Danny | August 30, 2008, 1:03 am 1:03 am
Vanessa, you are once again dodging the question, and how embarassing for you. Kindly state the evidence that Obama can handle the things you list? Until you do, you have no right criticzing Palin.
NO RIGHT.

Kelly, Not true, McCain had executive experience in one of the toughs jobs in the world as an officer in the Navy. In 1975 McCain commanded the Replacement Air Group 174 in Jacksonville for 13 months starting in 1975. McCain became executive officer of the group, which trained pilots and crew members for aircraft carrier service.

McCain opposed legislation to provide effective remedies for women facing discrimination on the basis of sex. He said “I want to find clones of Alito and Roberts” – the judges that rejected Lilly Ledbetter’s pay discrimination claim.
There are 21.5 million uninsured women in this country, and women are more likely than men to delay or not get medical care because of high costs.
McCain wants to raise taxes on businesses that provide health insurance. He said the veto of SCHIP was the “right call”.
McCain’s support among Republican pro-choice women drops by 9% after hearing his position on choice. In 25 years, he has a zero rating from NARAL. “This presidency will have pro-life policies”, says McCAin. McCain has repeatedly voted against funding for family planning, accessibility of contraceptives for women, and ensuring that sex education is scientifically accurate.

In the past 20 years, I’ve voted independent, Democrats & Republicans for prez. Picking Palin was electrifying news, the opposite reaction to picking of Biden.
The Real McCain is back! (see current The Economist magazine) He is a true maverick, the real deal w/ track record to prove it.
Democrats beware b/c true independents like me sense a pretender & lightweight in Obama, hence his need for grandiosity in everything — venues, rhetoric, crowds. It’s all wearing thin.
Posted by: Helen | August 30, 2008, 1:08 am 1:08 am
Nice try, Danny, but no banana.
Graduating from Harvard: thousands have graduated from there, that’s a qualification to be Prez?
He has not authored ONE significnat law manuscript. Unheard of and unprecedented for any law review editor, and certainly for any “professor”.
The only bills that he has authored and that passed into law, according to Senate records, are to name a post office, and support democracy in the Congo. everything else you list, he just jumped on as co-sponsor, often when the bills have been already largely written. EVERY senator does that.
he “opposed” the war in an obscure speech. Nobody, including himself, knows how he would have voted had he been in the senate at the time, with the intelligence.
As big as you think he is, Bush nor anyone else is listening to Obama’s “recs”. this is the natural transition of government and foreign policy, you can not possibly give him credit for that.
Obama DID have the opportunity to have an impact on safety in Afghanistan, as chair of the subcommittee that oversees nato, but he did NOTHING, holding no hearings, while he was selfishly starting his campaign.
NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING.
Your spin to try to flower up his super thin resume is useless, as everyone knows about Obama’s lack of accomplishments now.
Palin wins, by a longshot.

Most good Universities require teachers to publish SOMETHING in the national press. BHO taught Constitutional law at the University of Chicago for over a decade and didn’t publish a single thing that we are aware of.
How odd not to fulfill basic job requirements…

Mike:
Try reading the entire opinion before talking about the rejection of pay discrimination claim.
McCain wants to raise taxes on company that provide health insurance? You got that from the Pravda? Or the DailyKos? McCain wants to give tax credits for Americans to get the health insurance of their choice, and not be forced into healthcare plans that are crappy, whether private or socialized.

Are you actually trying to compare the VP with the President position. Just the mere fact that Obama has been all over this country talking to the American people for the past two years gives him on the ground experience. He visited Iraq and many other countries and they rolled out the red carpet for him. They have a relationship with Obama. Hell, a few of the other countries leaders treated him better than McCain and voiced publicly they wanted Obama as the President. That speaks louder than the crap you wish to claim Mrs. Beauty Queen has done. I give her the credit for accomplishing what she has accomplished, but it’s like hiring a soccer mom to be a head astronaut. Outside of Alaska and today’s speech where has Sarah been? Besides, under invesigation? It’s Alaska for petes sake. There are more people in my town than in the whole state of Alaska. Give me a break! McCain has no executive experience either, so why don’t you put Sarah down for President and McCain as VP. Now, that makes sense, right? I didn’t think so. This is highly laughable! Many other qualified women would have been a better choice and this half dead idiot chose a women whose achievements are localized to a State no on cares about except to take their reserves.

Obama did very little work on the laws in the Illinois Senate that he took credit for. Obama spent a total of 141 days in the Senate and never held a meeting of the only committee he chaired. Does not sound like a lot of experience to me.

Surely he MUST have performed some miracle to cause so many people not to laugh at him when he makes incredulous claims…

–Kelly- I would certainly put a small town mayor of 8 years and a governor of the largest state in the union in the position before putting a socialist with a love for terrorists as friends and supporters. He also choose criminals and crazies to be his associates. He refuses to release his papers, reports, legal birth certificate, grades, letters, appointments, phone calls while a public servant. His only asset is his ability to deliver a speech with the help of a teleprompter and 143 days in his Washington senate office before declaring his candidacy. He is a con man. He can not be trusted on his word with credibility or experience.
I lived in Alaska for 25 years and love Wasilla with its surrounding mountains and forest. One can walk down any of its streets and feel safe. South Chicago is very different, one needs body guards. I also spent time on the phone today getting information but I do not know her personally.
The Senator and Governor looks like a very credible ticket for the Republicans

“DecentAmerican”:
So you’re going to dismiss graduating from Harvard Law School, being President of it’s Law Review, and teaching US Constitutional law at the University of Chicago as “nothing”?
Please.
The laws he got passed in Illinois are nothing?
Working on the US Senate on securing loose nukes with Richard Lugar is nothing?
For those in the real world, these and the other items I mentioned previously are real accomplishments, and serious qualifications for Senator Obama’s Presidency.
Both McCain and Obama have been away from Washington a lot during the months of the Presidential campaign.
But Senator McCain is actually the most absent member of the US Senate by a significant margin.
In any case, what exactly makes Sarah Palin qualified to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America?

But then again, you’re voting for somebody you never heard of yet you lived in the state for 25yrs to be President. Oh and this lady is under investigation for using her power as governor to get a police office fired because he was divorcing her sister and going through a bitter custody battle. Great Judgment. Risk your career for your sisters bad judgment. Another freakin’ idiot, Republicans want to put in office. Think about it, if this lady is charged with this crime, you will have a criminal on the ticket. What will this do to the Republican brand. “Republicans, we care about so much about Americans that we even promote it’s criminals to the second highest office in the world.” LOL This goes to show that your judgment is suspect as well. She too extreme that she supports Pat Buchanan…and this comes from politico…
Perhaps Rep. Robert Wexler’s instincts were right here, and the Obama campaign will likely drive this one home with the Jewish community in Florida and Ohio: Palin (along with her husband), says former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, was a “brigader for me in 1996.”
He was responding to a question on “Hardball” from Chris Matthews about whether she was a member of Buchanan’s brigade “wielding the pitchforks,” a reference to his conservative populist campaigns of the 1990s.
“They were at a fundraiser for me,” Buchanan said of Palin and her husband. He called her a “terrific gal” and a “rebel reformer.”
She doesn’t appear ever to have contributed to Buchanan, however.

McCain can’t even speak in complete sentences and graduated at the bottom of his class when he went to college. Oh yeah, he too was in an investigation where he was told he had bad judgment by the Judge. What criminal investigation has there been of Obama or Joe Biden? None
McCain/Palin Both of them have been investigate for unethical behavior. You can have that flawed group. I’m thankful they’re Republicans.

Al Qaida sent 20,000 men into Iraq to kill Americans and set up a caliphate. There are now less than 2,000 left and are getting weaker each month.
Al Qaida sent 19-20 men to kill on 9/11.
What if they sent 500 of the 20,000 trained killers to the US instead?
Do you remember what just 2 snipers did on the east coast and the fear they caused?
Is it true Dems believe all fighting would end with the death of OBL and all the Islamic fundamentalists would stop fighting? Is it true Dems don’t know Al Qaida is in more countries than Afghanistan and Pakistan?

Willem,
Obama’s position on the Born Alive Act and Illinois version of it is public information and well known.
Obama is pro-letting born alive babies die. At various stages he’s claimed:
1.) Born alive infants are not protected by the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution.
2.) Letting them live would be burdensome to mothers.
3.) Its just a political issue.
4.) There isn’t any proof that the babies are being born alive then being left to die.
5.) It’s the doctors prerogative.
6.) Doctor’s don’t do it anyways.
7.) It’s a religious issue.
8.) Letting born alive babies die violates no universal principle.
9.) Bills like these are just a way to pigeonhole Democrats.
10.) Protecting born alive babies was just a ploy to undermine Roe v. Wade

The Republicans think that occupying Iraq will solve our problems. You mention our own country. Yes we can have disaster here too, but remember there are American terrorists who blow up Americans at will too. Remember, the Uhaul truck that stopped by the federal building with explosives that killed innocent men, women and kids in a daycare center located in the federal building. Republicans want you to believe they can solve the problem, you’ve had seven years and have accomplished NOTHING! So your argument doesn’t make sense. McCain told Rick Warren that he would defeat evil. Not even GOD has defeated evil nor will man. Man cannot defeat what man cannot see. Evil doesn’t show itself until it commits an evil act. So to stop something in it’s entirety is ludicrous. That’s why Obama’s statement to Rick Warren makes sense and McCain is once again an idiot!

The republican representatives of your state are furious at McCain. So,if you’re thinking Republicans are unified because on camera they have to say their cool with it. You’re dead wrong! The big difference in Iraq is Reps want to leave a viable Iraqi government that will assist us in defeating Al Qaida.
BHO didn’t know Al Qaida was in Iraq and would leave no matter what condition Iraq is in. If it becomes another safe haven for Al Qaida not our problem.
Oops, I forgot. BHO will leave enough troops behind to take out Al Qaida but just let the government fall apart.
Oops, BHO also stated we would leave but go back in again if we need to.

Okay, what experience does McCain have? He’s a POW. He’s been in office for 30 years. He’s dealt with leaders of other countries most of which can’t stand him. Now, Palin…she was the mayor of 8,000 people. She moved to be Governor of 700,000 people. She has executive experience according to Republicans. How does this ticket have anything to offer Americans. McCain is not liked throughout the world so that throws away any foreign experience he was suppose to bring to the table and she is a strong mother with some executive experience but an investigation hanging over her head. Come on, let’s get serious! This is just a ploy to get women to vote for McCain and it seems to be working for now with some, but will it sustain itself for two months. The base is simplistic in mind, they think this is all about making a historical moment, evening the playing field, but it was McCain who ran on the experience platform and two months out he’s flip flopping on what has kept him close this whole time. Wake up! He’s self-destructing and playing old school tactics in a world that’s tired of being toyed with. We’ll see in the coming weeks what she has to offer.

Palin is a member of the ‘Feminists for Life’. So she calls herself a ‘feminist’.
That’s not going to sit well with the average misogynist right-wing male Republican.
So I think it would be handy if certain Democrats with the power to interest journalists start reminding those Republicans of her membership.

First off, your don’t know 10,000 people who believe the things you say let alone millions. You’re just a sore loser who wants to put a women in office at any cost. Great for you! I think there are more level headed women out there who need to know more about this woman before casting their vote for McCain. It’s sad that your vote is not on Universal Healthcare or creating millions of news jobs or ending a war that should have never been waged. Your values are dead set on getting a women elected no matter what the consequences are. If you can sleep at night with Palin at the wheel, more power to you. For me, I’m not voting for Barack Obama cause he’s black or white for that matter. It’s because of issues he’s addressing. This women doesn’t even know squat about the process of Washington. In order to change it, you have to know how it operated to begin with. Besides, no one will even listen to her. Her decisions will be made for her for years to come.

Did you watch the networks today like I did.? Obama was mentioned many times and the only reason McCain was even mentioned is because the news media was in awe of his pick. Republicans thought it was a great move, but every news station was criticizing and not praising his decision. The Republicans on air were constantly fighting uphill in support of her. Anchors for CNN,MSNBC,FOX, ABC and CBS (even Larry King)were skeptical. So…what were you watching today is truly the question. When it’s the Republicans or Democrats for that matter against the world, the World wins.

Debra,
It’s so enlightening that you have so much knowledge about the politics of news coverage. For instance, you actually believe that Axelrod has enough money to get a complete network on his side for political gain. You’ve proven my point, you’re clueless. This conspiracy theory only applies to people who don’t believe in your way of life right? You are completely a waste of my time. I thought you were an intellectual. It’s turns out you probably haven’t even graduated from high school. Cause a college graduate has more sense than to spew such nonsense. Please someone else debate me cause this lady has proven to be crazy. My 9 year son know better than to believe that one person can’t be in control of two networks. She truly thinks they consult with him before putting information on air. You need shackles and a room with 4 white walls. LMAO!
Oh yeah, the number one cable news station is CNN. Get your facts straight. Hint…Nielsen Ratings tell stations who was number one after each night and over sweeps they’re notified who’s number one. The problem is that stations try to take one good night where they were No.1 and claim they are number one overall. Every station does it and if you’re a lab rat you believe what they feed you.

Danny,
“Is McCain even running his own campaign? He only met her for the first time 6 months ago.”
Now that is an interesting question. I knew this old black republican man years ago that was the “head” of his company that whites ran. It got to the point that when the whites wanted to move the office to a different state, they said they didn’t need the old guy’s opinion — he’d just do whatever they decided.
Figureheads! Scary! McCain cannot be president. Even if he were to win (unlikely!), someone else will be pulling the strings.

Obama’s initial reaction to Sarah Palin was so nasty. He put down small towns and people who weren’t experienced which was essentially a condemnation of himself.
Obama has never run a business, a state, or submitted a budget. He’s one of 99 voices in the Senate and he’s only served about 140 days.

It is so ironic that people will vote for Obama over the economic issues thinking that at best, he will improve it or least, Obama will not make it any worse. Most Americans are woefully ignorant when it comes to understanding the basic principals of economics. If only they knew what an Obama presidency with a democrat congress would do to their bottom financial line and to that of this nation. As per usual, the folks with so much hope will be the ones who will be hurt the most. Myself and others have tried going into detail on this site and others, but its pretty much like blowing into a wind.

I feel insulted. I feel maligned and I am rattled with fear that this Woman may become the President of the free World should something untowards happen to John Mccain.
Why do this to me Mccain? Am I to put my life in the hand of a Woman that was Mayor of a Town of 9000 inhabitants less than two years ago?
Whatever happened to Senator Hutchison if you are desirous of bringing a Lady on the ticket?
Whatever happened to Mitt, Huckabee, Pawlenty and other Veepee picks who would have given us a feeling of eldorado?
If this woman perhaps, become the President, how do we handle threats from Putin and Russia?
What happens in the absence of Mccain, do why become a Country being led by Advisors because the President lacks the Power to Preside over a complex Country like the US?
I am having goose Pimples out of fear of having the Woman very close than we can imagine to the Presidency of the United States of America. The most Powerful and the most properous Country in the World.

The Republicans are at it again. They thought no one would notice when they replaced the great Thurgood Marshall with Clarence Thomas as if all African-Americans are interchangeable. And now, just because she has ovaries, the Republicans think that Sarah Palin can make Democrats forget about Hillary. I was a fervent Hillary supporter and now I am a strong Obama supporter. A female Neanderthal on the Republican ticket does not make Republican policies more palatable. These are the bozos who claim that everyone has access to health care because they can just go to the emergency room. In a time when mortgage foreclosures are up, unemployment is up the McSame claims that the economy is sound. I guess when you have so many houses that you lose count the economy is sound. And before you RepubliCANTS write in and say that they are his wives houses, please note that this reformer used his wife’s private plane when his campaign was nearly broke. It was a loophole in the McCain-Feingold bill( a loophole he put in). Anyone who was previously for Hillary and is now supporting McCain can not be truly described as a Hillary supporter. McCain is the antithesis of all sh stands for.

Interesting that Gov Palin at least has executive experience with an 80 percent approval rating. Obama doesn’t have ANY EXECTUTIVE EXPERIENCE – and very little of any other experience necessary for a president to have.

Partisanship aside, Can anyone tell me what the Presidency of the United States entails?
Before Bush, America connotes admiration, awe, respect, fear, prosperity, jealosy, Peace, achievement, innovation, freedom in the minds of People world over. The adjectives are endless.
Iraq and Iran would only make empty boast of their wish to attack Israel beacuse they know, should they make an attempt, grave consequencies awaits them from the US.
Mccain is a good guy. He is tough talking and he is experienced. But what happens if the 72 year Old man is unable to preside over the affairs of states, Can you picture a Sarah Palin in the Oval Office?
Can you picture North Korea, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba standing in awe when she speaks?
Please picture this and look at how scary it looks.
America is for all of us. We need to feel safe.
We need to have the feeling that the person in the Oval Office is up to the Job.
This Woman has only left the shores of the US once in her lifetime.
The picture is scary and I hope Senator Mccain will wake up from the bad dream and rescind on this pick during the convention.
If not,……………….

I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.

Maybe you are lashing out at Gov. Palin because she got “for free” what Sen. Clinton couldn’t get after years of hard labor? Wouldn’t that be ironic? That is exactly Sen. Wrong direction? What direction is that? Everything that I have heard from McCain and Palin seems very logical to me. If you are in favor increasing the size of the Fed as much as a third – Obama is your man – no argument there. But do you realize what that means to the average Joe? Bad news, because we will have to vastly increase the size of our national debt (or do you really believe the fat cats and corporations are going to cover Obama’s bill), sky high inflation, increased debt to foreign nations and eventually loss of jobs, recession or even depression. IF YOU HAVEN”T HAD AT LEAST ECON 101, DON’T BOTHER RESPONDING.

In cutting language, and to cheers that echoed across the stadium, he linked Mr. McCain to what he described as the “failed policies of George W. Bush” and — reflecting what has been a central theme of his campaign since he entered the race — “the broken politics in Washington.”
“America, we are better than these last eight years,” he said. “We are a better country than this.”
But Mr. Obama went beyond attacking Mr. McCain by linking him to Mr. Bush and his policies. In the course of a 42-minute speech that ended with a booming display of fireworks and a shower of confetti, he offered searing and far-reaching attacks on his presumptive Republican opponent, repeatedly portraying him as the face of the old way of politics and failed Republican policies.
He said Mr. McCain was out of touch with the problems of everyday Americans. “It’s not because John McCain doesn’t care,” he said. “It’s because John McCain doesn’t get it.”
Obama’s theme all forgotten in a matter of hours. D’oh. Obama got played big time.

Palin was head of the National guard for two years and has been to Iraq more than Obama.
She made executive decisions everyday, balanced a budget, passed energy bills, vetoed 300 wasteful spending bills.
Obama spent 140 working days in the Senate and voted present 129 times.
And spent millions on his earmarks.
So it’s OK for an inexperience man to be president.
But it’s not OK for an experienced woman to be VP.

Dear Fellow Democrats:
Q: Who else do we know that was the mother of five when she entered politics, prior to that “just a soccer mom” who volunteered in her local party?
A: Nancy Pelosi
Anyone doubt that Sexism is still RAMPANT in our own party! I may not agree with Palin’s political views but I do not doubt or underestimate her abilities. Everything I’ve read is that she is intelligent, hard-working, has actual accomplishments as Governor and Mayor, from the working middle class, principled, and actually stands squarely behind her convictions and beliefs…not something I can say of most career politicians. She is an unknown but formidable VP choice and this is now a new ball game. She is the right choice for the Republican ticket which is still the wrong direction for our county.
McCain’s strategy here is absolutely brilliant, like it or not. Just look at the posts. Looks like “sexism” is the new “racism”. Drop the “experience” whining as that only highlights Obama’s achilles. Drop the Roe v Wade fear fest as many in the middle believe that McCain would never be able to get a “wrong” judge confirmed through what will be a strong Democratic Congress. Drop the “shame on her for not staying home and raising her baby” angle, as many WORKING MOTHERS of all political views do this every day because it is what is right for them and their family.
The Obama-Biden ticket better get out there and really start talking real details and policy…the how, by when, and how are they going to pay for it, if they want to win this election and save our nation. Start clearly laying out the distinctions of where are our nation will go under McCain-Palin vs Obama-Biden.
Stupid stupid Democrats for not taking Clinton on the ticket…once again we reap what we sow!

Mothers of special needs children do not abandon their “infant on the side of an Alaskan road.” They do RISE TO THE OCCASION, get resourceful, and find a way, make a way, to take care of their families. Correction, this is what ALL mothers do when faced with a challenge! The best problem solvers, multi-taskers, and cool-headed thinkers in face of a crisis are MOTHERS!

Several posts on this blog from Republicans defending this pick have said Obama and Hillary Clinton have done nothing. Are you suggesting that a US Senator does nothing in comparison to the Governer of Alaska? So are we then to assume she brings more executive experience than the 72 year old Senator at the top of the ticket because he’s never ‘run anything’? I admit some Republican spin is amusing and in some cases logical but this one is just plain stupid. When Hillary was helping NYC pick it’s self up of the mat after 9/11, Palin was mayor of some podunk town in rural Alaska. Senator Obama got legislation passed to stop the spread of loose nukes. Palin was a tough gal and a reformer but let’s just say the Alaskan statehouse is a target rich enviroment for any ambitious politician. I’m not saying she isn’t experienced but she AIN’T NO HILLARY. Palin is young and exciting but damn sure ain’t no Obama. When republlican’s wake up and blow the pixie dust out their noses you will see this was pure political despiration.

I am not impressed with either of the presidential candidates, but I believe Obama is the worse of two evils. Barack Obama has run his campaign on supporting the middle and lower class, yet many of his policies I believe will hurt those same people.
For example, Obama is in favor of raising the capital gains tax by a large percentage. This would severely damage small businesses within the United States. Small businesses often do no make a profit their first couple years. Once profits are made, they are used to pay off loans and make further investments that will spur growth. This usually leads to the hiring of more employees. If the capital gains tax is raised, many small businesses will fail, reducing jobs and future entrepreneurial endeavors. In a country where there are at least 23 million small business owners and 70% of middle to lower income workers are employed by small businesses, this could be disastrous.
In addition, Barack Obama says that he will free us from dependency on foreign oil in 10 years. If he does not allow for drilling or nuclear energy, his goal is not possible. While I am completely in support of developing alternative energies, every energy professional I have ever spoken with has said that the technologies for alternative energies (current and future) are not capable of replacing oil anytime soon. Therefore under Obama, energy prices would continue to increase, driving up food and gas prices. Another blow for middle to lower income America. On a further note, oil in not used solely for energy. Oil is used in asphalt (which makes up our roads), plastics, and pharmaceuticals. So, while we’re at it, lets raise the cost of infrastructure and health care.

GO Koolaid:
As yourself — why haven’t we had a Senator win the presidency since JFK? In over 45 years, not one senator has won the White House.
Why?
Because they don’t have executive experience. Senators are one voice among 99 others. They don’t run anything but their mouths.
Thankfully the American people understand that, even if you don’t.

Sarah Palin: Finally, somebody who is not an elite! She is actually a product of the middle class and therefore has an actual connection to our concerns. In addition, unlike Obama she has actually accomplished something other than winning approval just because she is charismatic. As a mayor she cut her own salary and reduced property taxes by 40 percent. As a governor, she “took on corruption within her own party and won.” She has also implemented a senior benefits program that helps low income Alaskans pay for health-care. She has solutions to the energy crisis that is hurting every American.
She is the epitome of Obama’s platform in change. She is someone who has actually accomplished change in a way that actually helps middle to low income people. I would put her accomplishments over Obama’s any day, which to me makes her more qualified than Obama. I have yet to read an actual accomplishment of Obama’s that have helped Americans. He is all talk and no action. It’s not how many years you have been in office. It’s -what have you done? Sarah Palin is the real change not Obama.
Also, McCain is not dead yet. Don’t dig his grave when his doctors have declared him to be in good health. My sister (26 years old) is a three time cancer survivor and is healthy now. If McCain had an immediate health concern, then I would be more willing to talk about the possibility of Palin possibly becoming president if McCain is elected and passes away before his term is up. But that is not the case now. Anyway, the thin resume guy is at the top of Democrat ticket… Palin is at the bottom of the Republican ticket.

Sarah Palin is a governor with two years of authentic experience. This spares this race the specter of an all-senator show. And history shows it’s far better preparation for the presidency than other offices. A governor must execute budgets, pull factions together, compromise on tough issues, and make the buck stop there. If Palin’s short stint as governor calls into question her experience, it’s still superior to Barack Obamas two years in the U.S. senate!

William van Oranje: Deeds that show positive aspects of Obama and Biden are being placed into the Obama campaign. Positive attributes of McCain and Palin are going to be placed into the McCain campaign. That does not mean that those points concerning either party are illegitimate. Palin was elected as governor because she actually held true to promises like lowering property taxes.
Now if you can prove Palin has not accomplished the supposed “flimflam” then I am willing to acknowledge your point. It also seems like you are looking for specific achievements. Please list those. If you also can name some actual points with facts to back up your argument about flimflam then there is cause for an actual debate. Failure to name something specific makes your argument thin. Not dismissible, just thin.

Amy T., you wrote: “The Obama-Biden ticket better get out there and really start talking real details and policy…the how, by when, and how are they going to pay for it, if they want to win this election and save our nation.”
You really believe the American people will vote for the Obama-Biden ticket when they are told the TRUTH about where the money will have to come from?
According to Sen. Obama, there will be three sources to pay for ALL of his new entitlements: (1) Tax increases for those making at least $250,000; (2) Implementing a windfall profits tax on the oil companies; (3) The money currently being spent on the Battle of Iraq, once the troops are all home.
The problem is:
(1) According to the latest statistics by the IRS, in 2006 there were approximately 3.8 million individuals who earned at least $250,000 in adjusted gross income. If all of these individuals were taxed ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of their wages over $250,000, in theory it might generate about $1 trillion in new revenue. But if the federal government were to announce a 100% tax on all wages over $250,000, individuals would stop working once they reach that amount.
(2) Congress already tried a windfall profits tax between 1980-1988. During that period domestic oil production dropped between 1.2% and 4.8%. Less production means higher prices–thus higher inflation, which will wipe out much of the gains in revenue generated from the windfall profits tax.
(3) The cost of the Battle of Iraq, according to a March 2008 ABC News report, is approximately $12 billion per month; or $144 billion per year. $144 billion BORROWED money. So Sen. Obama proposes borrowing $144 billion every year??
Eventually, it will be up to the middle class to PAY through the nose for their freebee entitlements.
Look at Sweden, which is one of the most generous welfare states. The Swedes enjoy “free” public schooling; “free” university schooling; health care at “nominal” fees; “free” medicine after an annual expenditure (one source has approximately $150); generous pensions, unemployment benefits; sick leave; highly subsidized child care; senior citizen care; even theater and other leisure activities; and the list goes on… With a population of just over 9 million people Sweden is able to provide these “free” entitlements because EVERYONE pays about 60% of their earnings in taxes (combined income tax, payroll tax and value-added taxes).
So if you want all of the “free” entitlements that Sen. Obama plans to implement–in spite of his rhetoric about giving tax cuts to the bottom 95% of the wage earners–eventually your taxes will skyrocket.

Cecilia: she made a campaign promise and she acts upon it when elected and you are all fawning over her?
1) Reduce her salary? She didn’t have that salary yet when se made that promise. She was going to more than double her family income when elected so it was extremely easy for her to make that promise: instead of increasing her family income with 110%, she increased it with 100% and that’s totally awesome? Give me a break.
2) Reduce the property taxes with 40%? How much was it before and how much was it afterwards? Nobody seems to know. How did she handle the decrease in statefunds: increase the deficit and the statedebt?
She increased the taxes on oilfield production from 22,5 to 25% so she might have offset it that way but nobody seems to know.
Saying you’re going to clean the house in Alaska is easy: Alaskan politics is the in greatest mess imaginable, Alaskan Republicans even renominated Stevens again to the US Senate. But what I’ve seen from Palin sofar seems a lot more like window dressing. Cleaning windows and hanging new curtains is not cleaning house, as you probably know.

James Danley: “(2) Implementing a windfall profits tax on the oil companies;”
I’d be interested to know what you thought of Palin’s increase of State taxes on Oilfield production in Alaska.
Posted by: Willem van Oranje | August 30, 2008, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm
James Danley:
I really appreciate your recent post. I just wanted to add a comment. During that same 1980-1988 period when homeland oil production dropped between 1.2% and 4.8% because of a windfall tax, foreign oil consumption increased by a greater margin. I believe additional consumption of foreign oil ranged between 8-10% though I have seen reports as high as 16%.
The catch here is that while Obama supports a tax on oil companies, so does Palin. I think the difference here though is that Palin wants to open more oil fields to drilling by U.S. oil companies. This should at least diminish if not solve the problems that occurred from taxing oil companies during the 1980s.

William van Oranje:
1) On salary: Okay. I’m willing to concede the point that her pay went up from mayor to governor. However, she still accepted less, which is a salary cut. Also, to me its not so much the dollar amount, it’s how many people in politics are willing to take less. The answer is not many. In truth, many people from both parties find ways to pay themselves and their families more by implementing projects that do not help the taxpayers at all, but give the politicians or their families more income.
2) Again a property tax cut no matter how small is welcome, especially when so many are trying to put food on the table and pay bills. I do not know the exact dollar amount that Palin reduced the tax, but I will look it up. However, AK as a state has the 12th highest property tax. So I believe that a reduction of 40% is significant. Not as significant as a 40% property tax cut in NJ or NH, but still a welcome sign to me.
3) As for your third point is it really that easy to clean up corruption? If it was, why didn’t somebody else do it before? Why are there still so many corrupt politicians in Washington? I don’t believe that it is an easy job to clean up corruption.
As to an increase in deficit. Each party has picked candidates that are going to increase the deficit and by large amounts. I don’t think there is a win situation for either party there.

Senators who became President for the memory impaired among you:
Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, before he became JFK’s VP.
Senator Richard M. Nixon, before he became Ike’s VP.
Senator Gerald Ford, before he became Nixon’s VP.
Congressman, and CIA Director George H. W. Bush before he became Reagan’s VP. (Not a Senator, but a member of the House of Representatives)
None of the above were ever Governors. The VP’s job is to decide in the event of a tie in the senate and to sit in wait of the death of a president.
Governors who became President
Governor Ronald Reagan
Governor Jimmy Carter
Governor Bill Clinton
Governor George W. Bush
Which were better presidents on the whole and which were losers all around? You choose.

Personally, I decide by individuals and their history not the history of others.

I’m a college graduate and I applaud highly intelligent people. It means they worked hard to learn all they can to better themselves. It’s the American Dream. The American dream isn’t to be average and achieve the same as someone who actually put in the work. We need someone with intelligence to lead our country, not an average person. The problem with average people running our country is we get average and sub-par results. Look at Bush, he was just an average good ole boy and now thousands of Americans are dead for his stupid decision! It’s scary that Republicans aren’t outraged. It’s a political move and their now running their campaign on the platform of change (let’s get rid of old politics.) The platform is flawed!

Willem van Oranje, Alaska is unique. Each resident of Alaska (minimum one year residency) receives an annual revenue check. In 2007 that check was $1,654. This is part of a program that was implemented through an amendment to the Alaska State Constitution shortly after the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System went online (1977). Because of the current high cost of energy, the Alaska State Legislature passed and Gov. Palin did, in fact, signed into law a tax increase on the oil companies. It is reported that Alaska collected an estimated $6 billion from that new tax. As a result, a special $1,200 payment per resident has been approved (in addition to their regular annual check). I am not in favor of any wealth redistribution, which this is.
HOWEVER, it is now being reported that there are signs that this tax hike is already discouraging future exploration and development. This is one of the reasons a national windfall profits tax is being opposed by the Republicans.
My own personal beliefs on this issue are as follows: (1) Corporations are already paying taxes on their profits; (2) I oppose any new taxes that limit a corporation from making profits; (3) I oppose any tax that targets a particular private business or a specific product (I oppose the so called sin taxes); (3) I especially oppose taking profits from a private business and directly sharing it with the public.
In a nutshell, I would prefer that the income tax be totally eliminated for both individuals and corporations. I am a firm believer in the fair tax, with one change. I do not like the idea of a monthly prebate check being sent to every individual to offset the tax paid on essential goods and services (poverty level expenditures). Instead, I prefer tax-free stores be opened for purchasing generic essential goods. Sending out monthly checks would be extremely expensive. And these tax-free stores would create thousands of new jobs.

Drew,
Bush received higher grades than Kerry.
They both went to Ivy league schools.
Given Ivy league people screwed up do you then recommend we don’t elect candidates with an Ivy league education?
Is there anyone running for office with an Ivy league education?

If you are going to discuss Obama’s experience have the brains to adress it correctly – 8 years State Senator (big state, let’s not forget) and 4 years US Senate (as in country). Palin – 8 years mayor (Wasilla – less than 7,000 people) and less than 2 years governor State less than 700,000 people. Please don’t forget her legistlative investigation in her state that is current and on going and her flip flopping on the bridge to no where and fighting big oil…or is that drilling in AK? I am not sure….but we sure do need to take the polar bear off of the endangered species list, because it is effecting or drilling…..hmmmm…. Anyone on this site who feels like she has the experience to run a country, any country, is just plain missing brain cells. You can argue all you want…Obama was PRESIDENT of the Harvard Law Review, what college did Ms. Palin attend? Or did she? I don’t know that answer. Palease……people. You make an emply and ill informed case for Ms. Palin as choice for VP. Good luck w/ that one.

Sarah Palin is the Governor of the largest state in the Union. Obama has spent less than 150 days working as a US Senator. Who is inexperienced?
John McCain put his presidency on the line; he put his faith in a woman. He considers a woman a worthy running mate. Even though Clinton had 18,000,000 votes the Dems couldn’t find a place on the ticket for her, in fact, they couldn’t even allow her the same roll call vote they gave Kennedy when he ran against Carter.
The actions of the neo-Dems prove that they are not progressive when it comes to women, since we have witnessed a huge disconnect between what they do and what they say.

The Liberals don’t get it …
Picking Palin is not about APPEASEMENT of the Obama camp.
It is about electrifying the Republican Party’s MIGHTY SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE POWERHOUSE,… AND unleashing a stunning torrent of campaign cash, as the McCain camp raised a staggering US$7 million !!!!….in the day-and-a-half since Mr McCain named Mrs Palin on Friday.
The evangelical conservative grass roots of the Republican Party, which helped secure two White House terms for Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush is erupting in delight just in time for this week’s party convention.
Move over Obamamania … this is GOP’s version of Palin-mania…she is the new headlines. BHO is yesterday’s news.

Republicans,
You guys selected Bush over McCain in 2000. If your top guy Bush turned out to be the WORST PRESIDENT in American history, think how worse will it be under your second best McSame?
Americans are not going to be fooled this time.
Playboy girl Palin is no Hillary Clinton!!!

The democrats are in charge of the congress and they have a LOWER approval rating than the President. The people in Congress are the people who write the bills, Bush just signs them. Therefore your democrat controlled congress is worse than Bush.
