Obama Meets With ‘Swift Boats’ Bankroller T. Boone Pickens
RENO, Nev. — At the Summit Casino-Resort, Sunday morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., met with oil man T. Boone Pickens, now a proponent of weaning the United States from foreign fuel, who was a funder of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that helped defeat Sen. John Kerry’s Democratic presidential run in 2004.
"How does it feel meeting with someone who tore down your Democratic colleague in the last election?" a reporter asked Obama.
"You know, he has a lot longer track record than that," Obama said. "He has been doing — He is, you know, a legendary entrepreneur and there are a lot of things that I think we have to unify the country around — it is having an intelligent energy policy. Everybody knows if we keep on going on the same track that we are going, that we are giving our wealth away. We are funding both sides of the war on terror.
"We are going to be, over the long term, putting enormous pressure on ordinary families here in America who just aren’t going to be able to afford, you know, skyrocketing gasoline prices and home heating prices," Obama continued. "So, this is one of those issues that, I think, should unify the country — and that is what we are going to be talking about."
Pickens gave the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth $3 million for its controversial and often fact-challenged campaign to discredit Kerry’s Vietnam War record.

Media BUSINESS censorship stifled debate, while beating the drums of war and promoting America’s descent into the abyss.

funding both sides of the war on terror?! what the hell does he mean by that? oil is evil. i absolutely cant stand that the idiots on the left are trying to make the american people believe that OIL is the enemy. my god, give it up man…. maybe if we used our OWN oil we wouldnt “fund” the bad side of the war on terror. what an idiot.

McCain already met with Pickens (I’m betting he’s a McCain supporter), and I’m watching FOX now, and noticed Obama camp has the music up real loud, but not too many in the crowd. Does McCain juice up the crowd before his town halls, does anybody know? Silly question, I know, but Obama marketing group is slick and I don’t think McCain’s town halls have the same party feel.

That’s a pretty weak response from Obama considering how heavy-handed the Obama campaign has been in the past few days condemning Corsi, who was of course the co-author of the Kerry “Unfit for Command” book and the author of the new Obama Nation book. If Obama truly believed that Corsi’s books were pure lies, he should have said so and noted his strong disagreement with Pickens’ funding of the Kerry book.
By instead backing out and downplaying the Three Million dollars Pickens gave to Corsi’s effort against Kerry, Obama missed an opportunity to truly squelch the new Corsi book on him.

The way I understand it, T. Boone is pushing wind and natural gas. Wind I get, but isn’t the cost and delivery of natural gas already hurting everyone? I’m betting there’s more natural gas to be found (or already found) and T. Boone has his finger on it. You can bet he’s out to make a dollar; nothing wrong with that, but I don’t like seeing personal agendas pushed in the name of “helping the common man”.
Wind and natural gas aren’t the be-all and end-all to our energy problems. Partly yes, fully no. Let’s not put all our eggs in one basket.

I don’t trust either one of them or McCain for that matter. There is no such thing as an oilman with a conscience. This is just another setup for the carbon tax scam. Just how much taxes would you like to be forced to pay for your kids, your pets, your cars, your houses, and your trash? Be afraid, be VERY afraid!!! “We’re the government and we are here to help you… (take what’s left of your savings)

Is it true that McCain has only realeased a small part of his military record? If this is so, why and why isn’t the media pushing for it. I don’t care if Obama and his people don’t want to use it, we have the right to know about it as it is part of what he is running on…he knows wars and how to fight and win.
I find this unbelievable. Why is the media allowing this?

I have read articles questioning the numbers Boone Pickens is throwing to justify his venture. If it is not going to cost the taxpayers anything, why is he asking Congress to pass legistation to help him? There are just too many unanswered questions to be jumping into the Pickensplan without some answers.
Posted by: Sundance 44 | August 17, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm
Why do you think wind isn’t supplying more than 1% of the country’s energy today. It’s easy to build windmills.
Surely it must be the Nirvana of power sources?
It must be a conspiracy.
Posted by: notafool | August 17, 2008, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm
“. If it is not going to cost the taxpayers anything, why is he asking Congress to pass legistation to help him”
Because wind can’t compete with any other power source economically, and T. Boone want to make money on his investment.

Pickens’ Plan is to use wind/solar to replace what power plants are currently using natural gas (approx 23% of the nation’s grid gets power from natural gas).
He owns the largest natural gas company in the US and wants to expand the natural gas market so he makes more money.
Thus, if he can get the country to replace the NG with his wind power then he doesn’t loose his market to the power companies, while also creating/expanding the market for NG to individuals who will use it to power their cars. He needs congress to pass legislation to get gas stations to convert from gas to natural gas.
Its a perfect plan (for him).
1. Don’t lose the power plant market.
2. Expand NG usage to private consumers.
3. Kill the competition – regular oil companies at the same time.
Bottom line – Pickens Plan makes Pickens richer.

T. Boone Pickens is a smart man and he knows McCain is a panderer and full of false information. Drill here drill now won’t do squat for our country.

Make Pickens rich…good for him and good for our environment. This should be right up the republican alley (a visionary entrepreneur taking advantage of the opportunities of business in this country while still being responsible for our current and future generations), but the people here tear him down for meeting with Obama. I think Obama meeting with this man is a great sign for our future if we only have the wisdom to vote him into office.

Obama pretends that Kerry is his friend… wow… I wouldn’t have an unnecessary meeting with someone that I knew was resposible for causing so much hurt to someone I respeced. I think this just shows Obama lacks character. It reminds me of the questions that remain about how he could be in Wright’s church for so long and claim to be a uniter! He is such a hypocrite — and it doesn’t matter how eloquent his words are. He is still dangeours. History is full of eloquent orators who brought nothing but destruction!

All this talk about other energy sources isn’t going to produce any solutions for our country. The main reason is that very few talkers can produce solutions that would work for the real world. Since the smog controls on a car cut the mileage a vehicle can get and the ethanol cuts even deeper. The EPA has made it against the law to tamper with the smog controls to gain fuel mileage on the current cars. Instead of new cars what about the current cars that we have? There are solutions that environmentalists won’t ever let us do like redesign the old smog controls that DON”T work and hurt fuel mileage. We should stop putting fuel down the toilet just because environmentalists say so.

You know from reading these posts, that to a majority of the posts, it seems that no matter what Obama does, you find something wrong with his actions. It is a good ideal to meet with your emenies to a least get some diolog going and to neuorlize him. The old ways of doing things is not working, so here we have a man who is trying his best to bring us together and all some of us can do is to critize him and nickpict him to death. Open your eyes people and look beyond the forest and a lease try to see the overall picture. But to some of you here, there is nothing any one can do to please you. Obama is trying to come to a consensious and yes, he is not prefect, (who is)? But give him some credit, he is trying to listen to all of the people. A wise man reaches out to all, while a foolesh man can only critize and find fault. I respect any man who is willing to find new ways of working with all of the people. “Think About it”

I have one question for some of you. Have any of you Hillary supporters forgotten that she lost? Some of you keep talking about how Obama NEEDS Hillary and he HAS to make her VP to win. Have you forgotten that she lost the democratic nomination? Hillary THOUGHT she couldn’t be beat. She THOUGHT she was going to win. I guess those of you who think that Obama NEEDS Hillary to win will be just as WRONG as she was. Good luck on keeping your hopes alive. Obama has proven that he doesn’t need Hillary to win. In fact, he has proven that he can beat her.

Anytime there is dialog between sides there is a better chance at resolution. War and bullying your ideals into victory is a barbaric way of moving forward.
All this anger and chest pounding from the less educated part of the USA is responsible for our very destruction.

I am going with the older guy because he is wiser..Choose ye this day whom ye shall vote for. Age=wisdom=more war=prosperity=America the great

Stanley,
>>”Have you had the opportunity to take one day and listen to the Republican talking heads on radio?”
Yes, I have.. I’m a Democrat who listens to right wing radio pretty much every day in my car. It’s good to know how the other side thinks. I have to say though, I find it sad and sickening…
I wish the level of political discourse in this country could go up a few notches, both in civility and in intelligence.
I know where you’re coming from though.

I am not a democrat, nor am I a Republican. I am an independent voter. I’ll tell you this though! The Republicans are much better at spin, negative ads and dirty politics and that is what win elections in America. So get ready for John McCain as the next president of these United States. You don’t believe me? Watch!

i threw up a little when someone said mccain is smart and wiser than obama..lol
who are you trying to kid?
the man jokes about other countries then talks about doing the right things and getting our status back in the world..
and he admitted not knowing economy on national tv MORE than once then said he doesnt know where people get that idea from? mmmm
and that he cares about the little guy obama is just too rich!
right thats why mccain thinks your problems are in your head and that we are doing better than we were 8 years ago..lol

stanley we do get your point…. if u just keep hammering away at it over and over it doesn’t get more persuasive it gets less…………
Posted by: jezebella | August 17, 2008, 10:38 pm 10:38 pm
melissa, McCain is the smartest mind that we have had in 40 years. He is brilliant and understand the physiology of wars and how its good for the economy. Can’t you see how our economy is healthy at the moment? Its because of the just war that we are currently fighting. Obama is for world peace and he does not know how to pick a fight and start a war..why would you even consider voting for Obama is beyond my comprehension. McCain for a strong economy and continued prosperity..The status quo works. McCain’s my man for the next four years, and we need his wisdom in the White House..why are you laughing?
Posted by: Stanley | August 17, 2008, 10:44 pm 10:44 pm
Jezebella, maybe you got the point but most Americans have not gotten the point..and that is why George Bush got two terms in office..get ready for President McCain. Heaven help us all!

Why was Obama in Houston a few weeks ago, in a meeting with Big Oil? Obama was smiling with the Big Oil exectutives after the meeting. Can you say $12 gallon for gas, the Obama way !!!

Liar, and phony = John McCain.
John McCain has lied his whole life!!! He even collaborted with the enemy during war. John McCain collabortaed with the Vietnamese during a time of war, and even admitted to doing it in his own book.
JOHN McCAIN SHOULD NEVER BE PRESIDENT!!! JOHN McCAIN HAS ALREADY BEEN A TRAITOR TO HIS OWN COUNTRY, AND JOHN McCAIN HIMSELF HAS ADMITTED BETRAYING HIS COUNTRY IN HIS BOOK!
JOHN MMcCAIN HAS ALREADY ADMITTED THAT HE COLLABORATED WITH THE ENEMY DURING WAR!!!! When John McCain had the opportunity to put his country FIRST, JOHN McCAIN FAILED TO DO THAT AS A SOLDIER!!!!!
When John McCain was asked to show that he has integrity, that he is honest, that he would stand by the pledge he made to God, and his wife, John McCain also failed to do that by cheating on his wife, betraying his first wife, and his children.
So John McCain is a phony, John McCain has ZERO integrity!
The fact is John McCain has ALREADY FAILED at putting his country first, John McCain collaborated with the enemy in time of war, THAT IS NOT PUTTING YOUR COUNTYRY FIRST!!!
And the fact is John McCain also betrayed his contract with God, by cheating on his wife, and dumping her, and his children like they were garbage!!!!
John McCain is a hypocrite!!! John McCain is an adulterer, John McCain has already betrayed his own country, John McCain is a liar!!

Dean & Obama, the dynamic duo. This is the beginning of the end for the White House in ’08, for the democratic party.

I wonder how Obama has done in attempting, for a third time, getting a “real” birth certificate (COLB). Now, you know why Obama was in Hawaii!

Swift Boaters served with Kerry. They didn’t like him. Face it. Obama will be great. He’s in it to line his pockets.

T. Boone Pickens likes to meet his prey. If in doubt, ask Kerry.

Obama wants a surge in Afghanistan without an exit strategy. Warmonger by his own acusations
Posted by: Jed | August 17, 2008, 11:03 pm 11:03 pm
Pickens has realized what a mistake it was to smear Kerry instead of debating policies and proposals. He is reformed and is trying to make amends for his failings. Obama is smart enough to realize that Picken’s energy proposal makes sense.
Posted by: miles1967 | August 17, 2008, 11:19 pm 11:19 pm
At least Kerry served in the military. Onothing’s lack of a record, military or otherwise, speaks for itself.

Wow, we have sure become a distrusting people. As regards to the neo-conservative republicans our distrust is justified, but ,for now, I think we ought to give Obama some leeway and see what he does with it.
There’s no doubt that we need a comprehensive energy policy and I believe Obama’s discussion with Pickens is heading in the right direction. It would be of little benefit for Obama to use the energy crisis to line his pockets (as some suggest) and a tremendous benefit to him, if he is successful.

Wasnt that pathetic? The dummy Barack is so scared to lose that now is pacting with anybody including the devil Pickens. Next lets get him together with Rove and Chenye, they
also have ideas about oil…

Stanley, What planet are you living on. This state of wealth you are enjoying everyone else is not. If McCain is your idea of smart, whow I hate to see any more dumbness.

They are both politicians. Politicians are about as low as lawyers…and most are both. The only thing that keeps me away from Democrats is that they want to “subsidize” the sorry people who have 10 kids with about 5 different partners and don’t work, and democrats have no clue when it comes to national security. Until you get a person that runs solely to make the USA better(some one who already has made a lot money on their own)…we will always be stuck with politicians who are in the pockets of the lobbyist with the most money. It doesnt matter if they are Republican or Democrat…they all suck…and those of you that argue the merit of either party are pretty silly to think things will be any different after the election.

T. Boone Pickens is advocating wind seriously, not so much out of environmental concern as self-interest, given he’s channeled well over a billion dollars of his own resources into windmills. In contrast, he also advocates the oxymoronic, “clean coal” because I think he’s got investments tied up in Canada to convert coal into gas suitable for vehicles. Like the Dr. Rick Warren, he knows how to implement his purpose and self-driven agenda into politics.
Posted by: kat | August 18, 2008, 2:01 am 2:01 am
Be it McCain or Obama….they both are not viable canidates. Pickens is just keeping with his own agenda and that is money…cozy up to the possoble winner. The wool is over so many folks eyes on this global warming crap, it is the perfect opportunity for green to be made upon ” green”. Science, has truely been lacking in our schools….public or private.

T. Boone is 80 and he wants
to make a significant contribution
in achieving energy independence
using the money he already has.
He’s not cozying up to presidential
candidates with the expectation
that such contacts will enable him
to make even more money.

Obama keep talking about strengthening the economy and world peace..Americans do not want to hear that garbage. We are interested in the stronger leader..one who knows how to pick a fight and start a war. Military power is real power not economic power and we need to show the world who has has power. We probably can take on Russia,China, Iran and North Korea at the same time. There you go! McCain is the stronger leader because he is a war man and good at starting wars..War is good for the economy..can’t you see how good our economy is now? I am voting for McCain..you can vote for Obama and a strong economy and world peace…LOSER! McCain 08!

I don’t like to American leader because I think every will be same as W Bush. I hope Americans would not shose a president as W Bush, because he makes whole world mass. Thanks Americans for chossing right a person. Please be aware and careful.

New info. out says/proves Obama was an Indonesian Citizen at one time!!!!
ABC & AP are reporting!

JED:
So What!!!! Did not senator Obama also say that he’s a fellow citizen of the world? Is not Indonesia a part of the world community? Your comments about him being once a citizen of Indonesia, as a child, is silly!!!!
The young senator was born as a United States citizen….And John McCain, on the other hand, was born in Panama…
Go figure!!!!

Well, it appears the anti-Boone, anti-wind forces have seized upon discussion of the Obama-Pickens meeting to spread their misleading fiction. Let’s try this: If the lights don’t flicker off and on during the GOP national convention, we’ll just consider wind a reliable energy source and you can quit spreading untruths about wind energy. Minnesota gets nearly 5% of its electrical energy from wind power so, if the doubters are right, the lights will go out every time the wind stops blowing in the Twin Cities. I think we’ll find that the lights stay on – and it’s the doubters who are truly in the dark.

It appears that, in the first month since the public became aware of it, the Pickens Plan has gained significant public awareness and support. I just saw a national poll by Sacred Heart University that says 74% of Americans believe it’s the way to go in reducing reliance on foreign energy and assuring our energy future. The problem is two-thirds also believe that Congress will not allow the Pickens concept to be implemented. The poll may be right, unfortunately, on both counts – the Pickens Plan is the best approach and the Congress will dilute the plan’s potential

“Obama Meets With ‘Swift Boats’ Bankroller T. Boone Pickens” What’s that got to do with addressing the problems created by $4 gas or solving the nation’s energy problems? As a supporter of the Pickens Plan, it is a disservice to Americans who want energy solutions that ABC chose to turn the Obama-Pickens meeting into some partisan confrontation. There’s no evidence the meeting was anything but cordial and that Obama was receptive to the basic Pickens concept. ABC owes an apology to Obama, Pickens and the rest of us concerned about the energy issue. We’ll look for it on tonight’s newscast with Charlie What’s-His-Name – you know, the guy who was shutout from moderating a presidential debate this fall.

To all those who support the Pickens Plan, developing American energy resources and increasing our energy independence – a national survey shows about three-fourths (74%) of Americans believe the Pickens goals can be accomplished over the next 10 years…but two-thirds (65.7%) believe Congress will block it through use of laws and regulations. Keep the heat on the politicians to support efforts to reduce foreign oil imports as the November election approaches.

All the swiftboaters are chiefly responsible for the USA selecting a National Guard shirk over a combat veteran in 2004 and they got what they deserved. Ole TBONE knows how bad he failed and now hopes to wriggle out from under a crushing payback. Chief Justice John Roberts went to Florida to help get the 2000 selection stamped and now sits atop the SUPREMES as his reward…In the meantime, the Constitution sputters and wheezes to what end?????? Film at eleven folks!!!!

What does it mean if Obama was an Indonesian citizen? Did he say he never was, can he not have dual citizenship and still be president, etc.?
Posted by: Susan | August 18, 2008, 6:09 pm 6:09 pm
It’s time to start taxing personal automobiles, SUVs, old-pick-up trucks that have poor gas mileage. We need to make mandaotry the catalytic converters to clean up the environment. These are responsible for pollution and increase our dependency on foreign oil. The target for miles per gallon on new cars was to be near 50 mpg, but due to SUVs we are far below achieving the improvements needed in gas mileage. As boat usuage increases, we need to mandate cleaner boat engines.

Obama is a US citizen. He does not have duel citizenship with Indonesia or Kenya. He is an American and was born in America. Why does this keep coming up? No one is questioning McCain who was born in Panama.

I’ve read enough posts to know that people just want to be negative.
Okay, maybe at some point, T. Boone was more interested in money than anything else, but please remember…. he’s 80! Does anyone grasp how old that is? We’re talking about checking out within a decade.
Do you think an 80 year old is only concerned about money? Chello. He wants to have a legacy. Something for people to remember him by. And, why not??? Here’s a guy that can give us real insight into the energy crisis. Here’s someone that really cares and wants to make a difference. Here’s someone we ALL should be supporting…NOT tearing down. Republican….democrat…no matter….we need direction when it comes to energy. Where else are we going to get it?
