Obama Mocks McCain’s Definition of ‘Rich’

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Senator Obama made light of Senator McCain’s definition of “rich” at Saturday’s Saddleback forum in California, suggesting that even though McCain may have been a joking, it still demonstrates McCain’s mindset in forming his tax policy.

“How about $5 million?” McCain joked back to Pastor Warren who asked for his definition of rich, “No, but seriously…I’m sure that comment will be distorted – but the point is that we want to keep people’s taxes low, and increase revenues.”

Today, at an economic event with women in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Obama brought up McCain’s response.

“Maybe he was joking,” Obama said of McCain’s answer yet joked that by McCain’s definition, people making 3 million a year are middle class.

“But that’s reflected in his policies – where for people making more than 2.5 million, he’s giving folks a $500,000 tax break,” said Obama.

The Illinois Senator continued to paint McCain’s proposals on taxes as a continuation of President Bush’s policies.

Obama – in responding to the same question by Pastor Rick Warren on Saturday also made a joke – saying that the definition of “rich” was someone who had book sales of 25 million – a shot at the Pastor’s own bestsellers.

Today’s jab follows heightened rhetoric by the Democratic Senator against his Republican opponent since returning to the campaign trail after a week of vacation in Hawaii.

The McCain campaign responded to Obama’s remarks, accusing Obama of distorting McCain’s words.

“As was immediately predicted by John McCain after he made the remark, Barack Obama is already distorting his comment about the definition of ‘rich’ in America," McCain Spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a paper statement Monday.  "Remember when Barack Obama said he was ‘tired of distortion, name-calling, and sound bite solutions to complicated problems?’ Neither do we."

Why is it heightened rhetoric by the Democratic Senator against his Republican opponent whenever Obama says anything.

Posted by: iceman | August 18, 2008, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

It was a dumb thing to say on McCain’s part, and does warrant a comment or two from Obama.

Obama didn’t mistate anything here – McCain is really out of touch with regular folks when it comes to economic policies. His tax plan does favor the wealthy, like his wife and best bud, Phil Gramm. I hope people pay attention or we will all be sorry if we allow the Bush policies to continue.

Why does Obama do this; does he think everyone has his playground mentality? Grow up. He can joke and say $25 million but somehow McCain can’t joke and say $5 million? Maybe instead of focusing in on that he could focus in on giving a direct answer to when conception starts. Not only does he lack judgment, maturity isn’t a strong suit either.

More mccain humor? I’m not laughin’. This is a serious issue this election and the hero laughs it off – but drones on and on with old war stories. Frankly I don’t give a rip – what is your perception of rich mr mccain? It’s a pocketbook issue, and it matters to me. His disregard for serious issues and attention paid to hooey like claiming Obama wants to lose in Iraq to win an election is insulting. What a ridiculously ignorant thing for any american to say – yet the joker is applauded for it. It’s a disgrace to hear comments like that coming from mccain. Tawdry and petty and truly dishonable – mccain must have traded his character for the gop nomination. Cut through the crap and listen to the policies of these candidates – do your own research and fact checking because the msm and campaigns sure aren’t going to do it for you. You’re being fed pretty pictures – good stories – not reality.

Obama seems to have lost his hope and change in the gutter.

Posted by: geevill | August 18, 2008, 3:37 pm 3:37 pm

I think the 5 million comment by McCain may have been the biggest gaffe of the night overall. I actually think a lot of what McCain said could be used to make the 3rd Bush term argument. I think a tag line on a number of ads based on that forum could be along the lines of ‘Don’t just change the face, change direction.’

McCain’s health plan calls for the taxing of employer-paid health insurance benefits as regular income. Just another method to benefit the rich corporations at the expense of the middle and lower classes. And he claims that Obama is going to raise taxes?

McCain owns 7- over 1 million dollar homes across the U.S., wears $540 shoes, and wants to kill Social Security while he still accepts his social security check. This guy has no idea what the average person is facing today. I hope the Middle Class will come out in full force against this Elitist who only cares for the wealthy.

“and Obama believes babies surviving abortions are not living humans.”
————————————-
At, at least Obama realizes that people dying in a made-up war of choice and spending billions of dollars in Iraq while Americans go without health care is morally worse than abortion. I see the right wing is intent on trying to make abortion an issue in this election…that might go over until Americans get their first heating bills of the season!

Posted by: Darth_Riddle | August 18, 2008, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

Neither of these guys are middle class, low income on anything in between, they are both rich and are both out of touch with people who struggle to pay the bills and put food on the table. I wonder the last time either of them had to worry about feeding and clothing their kids or go to a real job where they had to break a sweat????? They are both politiicans and both are probably crooked-I am waiting to see who they choose for v/p before deciding who I will vote for, but I think the media has already elected our next POTUS…unfortunately.

Posted by: concerned citizen | August 18, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

On the other hand, Obama said you may be poor if you make $150K per year. Do you really think he believes that or was he pandering to the middle class.

Posted by: Kelly | August 18, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

At what paygrade would Obama be able to answer the abortion question. Actually we already know the answer. Obama was the only one to vote against saving the lives of babies surviving botched abortions.

Posted by: geevill | August 18, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

Obama is losing his message. He’s not the same candidate who can continue camouflage with different colours and lies. Obama is still the most hypocritical candidate in US history. I am not glad I am part of it.

Posted by: young_voter | August 18, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

So, are any McCain supporters bothered by him seemingly just making up this story about a cross in the dirt?
Well, okay, plagiarizing isn’t just making it up. To make up something requires a little creativity. But are you guys bothered by him using an episode from Solzhenitsyn’s book as his own experiences?
Just curious.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

Geevil – Christians understand Obama’s comment about paygrade.
Actually its refreshing to see a Christian candidate who reflects the humility at least my Church says we ought to have.
Obama doesn’t claim to understand God and life. I’ll take that over the false Bible thumpers who want to convince me they speak for God.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

I respectfully disagree with Markymark. I think that the biggest gaffe of the evening was Obama’s “above my pay grade” comment.

Posted by: KB | August 18, 2008, 3:45 pm 3:45 pm

McCain’s cross in the dirt story is a total fabrication. Actually he lifted it from Solzhenitsyn’s book. McCain is lying or is imagining things which is even scarier. This man cannot be trusted with anything.

Posted by: geevill | August 18, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Besides, all we know about McCain is that he understands Wikipedia and Solzhenitsyn.
Okay, that’s a stretch, regarding Wikipedia. The part of that Georgia article he didn’t take word for word, he summarized and actually introduced a historical mistake. But the parts he copied word for word, he got those just right.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 3:50 pm 3:50 pm

another severe beating taken by Obama. and it was not even a true debate.

Posted by: geevill | August 18, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

geevill – no, not 10 years but he has told that story for nine years. It came out in the book he wrote for his 2000 campaign.
And its changed over the years. People are going back today and looking at all that. Its been a stick in the dirt, a sandal in the dirt…
But this doesn’t change the simple two facts that, 1) the same thing happened in the Gulag Archipelago, and 2) McCain is familiar with that book as he included the act of writing it as one of his twelve tough historical decisions.

As commented on MSNBC; Take it from an Arizona resident, when McSame tries to make a funny, which means he’s telling the truth and thinks we are too stupid to see it because he’s laughing. Then he’ll say, no, no I was kidding (you bunch of stupid jerks).
He thinks the middle class is the doormat to wipe his $500 shoes on. He does NOTHING for Arizona. NOTHING. He won’t take pork, so that means we don’t get new bridges or repaired dams. But his friends get subsidized federal money. To McSame, if you’re not rich (5 mill or above) you’re nothing and deserve nothing. Except maybe, taxes, yes if you’re poor or middle class you deserve to pay more taxes.

Why did McCain get shot down in Vietnam? Is it because he made poor judgement? I do not want a president who makes poor judgement. And what makes him think that he’s not going to do the same when he’s president? There are other soldiers that encountered the same but that did not qualify them to be president. I have an uncle that got captured in Vietnam and got released after seven years and of course got purple heart but that does’nt qualify him to be president. Vote for OBAMA to be the next president!

By the way, Geevil, care to comment on McCain’s performance on the David Letterman show back in October 2001?
LETTERMAN: How are things going in Afghanistan now?
MCCAIN: “I think we’re doing fine… I think we’ll do fine. The second phase — if I could just make one, very quickly — the second phase is Iraq. There is some indication, and I don’t have the conclusions, but some of this anthrax may — and I emphasize may — have come from Iraq.”
LETTERMAN: “Oh is that right?”
MCCAIN: “If that should be the case, that’s when some tough decisions are gonna have to be made.”
Hmmm. Is that McCain announcing the GOP’s decision to invade Iraq more than a year before we did? Why, why… that’s not how the White House says it played out. They say they were committed to pursuing all diplomatic approaches. But here’s hot head… telling Letterman and the TV audience, nah, we’re just going to whack ‘em.

Janet: “Why did McCain get shot down in Vietnam? Is it because he made poor judgement.”
McCain was a pretty bad pilot. In training, he crashed two aircraft and almost crashed a third when he flew through electrical lines. Also, it routinely took him a little longer to achieve various flight qualifications.
But from what I understand, getting shot down in combat is something of a luck of the draw kind of thing. I haven’t heard anyone suggest he screwed up on some evasive action he was supposed to take, or anything like that.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 4:20 pm 4:20 pm

McCain’s point was well-taken:
You only need to put a dollar amount on “rich” if your purpose is to redistribute the wealth through taxes (otherwise known as buying the votes of the poor people with money taxed off rich people).

Gee Paul, and wasn’t it dumb of Obama to say that “rich” meant selling 25 million books? McCain should have jumped on that, but he has too much class. It was a joke, but Obama needs to use whatever he has to salvage his pitiful campaign.
But, to more important stuff, the smart media is rightfully jumping all over Obama’s ignorant comments about Justice Thomas. Now, that’s news. Dear ABC, can you please focus on the news, and not this silly stuff?
thank you.

JonDo: “…buying the votes of the poor people with money taxed off rich people.”
If your characterization is fair, isn’t it also fair to say that proposing low taxes should also be characterized as buying votes?
And the bottom line is that we aren’t going to significantly cut spending. We’ve had Democrats in office and we’ve had Republicans in office. None have any stomach for reducing the size of government.
So are we going to continue the tax-cutting policies of the past seven years, that have added nearly $5 trillion of debt (nearly doubling our total public obligations… in just two presidential terms)?
That’s just pandering for votes now without any concern about the nation’s future solvency.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

The point is not whether or not McCain was joking…both joked, but only Obama came back and gave specific numbers (the question asked). McCain thought he could get away with skipping the heart of the question by joking and never gave america the answer we wanted to hear. Obama was right to point out that number was not a joke if you look at McCain’s policies…McCain did not give us any numbers to look at otherwise.

Posted by: Natash | August 18, 2008, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

decentAmerican – nope. That one came off as a joke because it was targeted at the interviewer.
And unlike McCain, Obama followed it with a real answer. Under $150k for a household, adjusted by regional cost of living, and Obama sees that as a middle class or lower situation. Above $250k for a household, and its a pretty comfortable situation. I think its safe to say the $100k gap is where he’d put upper middle class.

Posted by: Paul | August 18, 2008, 4:31 pm 4:31 pm

“Tax the rich” sounds good if you don’t consider yourself to be rich. Unfortunately it is shortsighted and self-defeating policy. Most rich people are not dumb about money – if their taxes are raised, then they will reduce cost (like raise prices or cut jobs) to compensate, or they will hide their money in safe investments until the tax climate gets better.

The paygrade comment is so consistent with Obama. He won’t answer questions that places him in one area of conviction. He avoids, and votes “present”. This is not a leader, but an immature man-boy who objects at the most vain things. He is exactly the problem we have with politicians: the promotion of the politics of envy and jealousy. “Vote for me because I knwo you’re jealous of your neighbor and I will take from what your neighbor has rightfully earned and give it to you.” I have finally made up my mind to vote for McCain where I had decided to vote for “none of the above.” Obama’s duplicity, lies, deception, disregard for human life, racism, and elitism are more than I can tolerate.

Higher taxes are not needed.
Less government spending is needed.
And yes, the point stands: Taxes on the rich are redistribution of wealth, plain and simple. It hasn’t helped the poor – the War on Poverty has been a failure.
Lower taxes for everyone (even on the rich *gasp*) is proven to stimulate the economy and help everyone.

You are missing the larger point McCain wanted to make: deciding who is rich is not for the president to decide. We should all pay our fair share of taxes, but last time I checked, almost a majority of the people in this country do not pay federal taxes. The wealthy already pay the very large percentage of all taxes. Poor people do not create jobs. People with money do. We need to make the laws more small-business friendly so that you and other inventive people can create your own jobs–and take the risks associated with doing so.

I’m not a McCain supporter, but I hate these little twist-the-truth articles because they’re easier to write about than key issues.
According to another blog, the question McCain was asked was:
WARREN: Everybody talks about, you know, taxing the rich, but not the poor, the middle class. At what point, give me a number, give me a specific number. Where do you move from middle class to rich?
When McCain answered “$5M”, did he mean income or net worth of $5 million? If I consider my home, savings, possessions, and what I’d need in the bank to replace my pension, I’m well over $1M in net worth but certainly not rich, though many I know who are just getting by on Soc. Sec. consider that I am. But I’m comfortable now and would feel very well off at $2M. To me that qualifies as rich, but my cousin, with $1.5M in equity in her home alone, doesn’t consider herself rich. If McCain was trying to err on the side of really rich, $5 million in net worth is reasonable.

Obama’s answer also showed how out of touch he is with the average American – according to Obama, people are only rich if they sell 25 million books. The bottom line is, there is no way to answer that question because it depends geography – a person making $100,000 a year in rural Arizona who owns a 5-bedroom home that he paid $120,000 for is probably “rich” compared to someone living in San Jose California, making twice that and living in a 2-bedroom, $500,000 house. Keep in mind – McCain is for keeping taxes set where they are, Obama is for raising them.

Hypocrites… That is what I call all these so called Eveangelicals who are so obsessed about abortion( which by the way I believe to be a serious moral dilenma)and care not about the millions killed, maimed and displaced by the massive instruments of destruction that the US so readily spreads around the world. Lil’Me…
Are you privy in some way to information regarding Senator Obama’s tax plan that has heretofore been unpublished. it’s easy to repeat mr Mccain’s standard campaign stump speech that’s he’s not for taxing anyone and state that Senator Obama’s plan will cost you…but the Wall Street Journal (typically a fairly conservative publication) disagrees…Have you done your homework???????
To quote: Overall, Sen. Obama’s middle-class tax cuts are larger than his partial rollbacks for families earning over $250,000, making the proposal as a whole a net tax cut and reducing revenues to less than 18.2% of GDP — the level of taxes that prevailed under President Reagan.
Both candidates for president have proposed tax plans. But they are starkly different in their approaches and their economic impact. Sen. Obama is focused on cutting taxes for middle-class families and small businesses, and investing in key areas like health, innovation and education. He would do this while cutting unnecessary spending, paying for his proposals and bringing down the budget deficit.
In contrast, John McCain offers what would essentially be a third Bush term, with his economic speeches outlining $3.4 trillion of tax cuts over 10 years beyond what President Bush has already proposed and geared even more to high-income earners. The McCain plan would lead to deficits the likes of which we have never seen in this country. It would take money from the middle class and from future generations so that the wealthy can live better today.

geevill-perhaps you should do some research before posting bogus claims against any candidate on this Blog. If you bothered to look up any information regarding the bill Obama opposed in the Illinois Senate you would know it is not the same as the federal legislation regarding the protection of infants. Illinois already has a bill providing assistance and Obama voted against the additional legislation with the support of the Illinois medical community because it only served to water down Roe and was not as substantial in helping infants as the current legislation. You may dislike Obama, but get your story correct before you spew vile that is not correct.

To McCain 5 million /year is rich well so much for another one of McCain’s sick jokes. He was bragging because he and Cindy are worth 100 million. McCain could care less about the workng class that is why he can make these sick jokes. I hope there is not enough rich people in America that could elect him as our president. As for the poor I hope for once they would look beyond skin color and vote their econmonic interest for once.

Obama must be getting desperate to use the $5 mil. comment by McCain. McCain said it would be distorted, but I assumed he thought it would be the media and not Obama. McCain was making light of the question and he qualified the statement by saying that he doesn’t want to raise anyone’s taxes, so to him it really doesn’t matter how rich you are.

I don’t think seizing on MCCain’s ignorant statement (which he knew was ignorant the moment it left his mouth)… is any more “desperate” than McCain trying to paint Obama as the celebrity when he’s been the jokester saturday night live talk show circuit boy for years.
too bad Obama can’t come out and use Mccain’s calling his wife a C**t against him. Wonder where his “sense of humor” would be about that?

The abortion argument will never be won as the two sides are not even arguing the same issue. One side is arguing for the rights of women to choose what is best for their own bodies without government involvement. The other is arguing about a cell that grows into a life. Many women and men are pro-choice, yet anti-abortion. What women do with their bodies is very private and personal. John McCain has no business governing women’s bodies.

S Adams…
You are so right about Mr Obama not living in squalor. He certainly would not be elected president if he was – I’m convinced of that. He DID however (at least by reports) work his way into whatever income he’s achieved instead of marrying an heiress. Be that as it may, I think MOST people in this country would agree that at $250k a year a person (if they haven’t overextended themselves) can afford to put a little more into the kitty. socialistic…maybe? Humanitarian – you betcha.
And btw…as a person who deals with nothing but medical insurance indsutry on a daily basis – can you detail for me how our healthcare system is so vastly superior to that of other’s countries? Firsthand…? and please include for me a detailed analysis of HMO’s and the Knox Keene act while you’re at it.
THEN>>>>we can have an intelligent discussion.

Obama actually answered the question after his joke. McCain used his joke to avoid the question. McCain has no idea how the middle class lives. He staged a grocery store trip and couldn’t remember the price of milk without awkwardly reading a note. McCain hasn’t been in a grocery store since he dumped his first wife for the rich one.

He just using it as a segway into how McCain’s policies will be no different than Bush’s. The fact that McCain would use religious rhetorice “The One” in an ad against Obama to mock him as if Obama was “The One” is using God’s Son’s name in vain. McCain said it was a joke. McCain is a liar – it is no joke, it is not funny in any way shape or form. You do not mock your opponent as “The One” using God’s Son as part of the brunt of any joke. McCain is blatantly unfit to rule anything with his sickened sense of humor. God is not laughing Mr. McCain. So no it was not a joke nor was it meant as a joke.
Posted by: Darth_Riddle
_____
Darth_Riddle, if heating bills go up it will be because your hero Obama blocked offshore drilling sending a message that Americans DESERVE high heating bills for causing global warming. I can really see how THAT’s moral (not).
As to the Iraq War, the only reason he didn’t vote for the war along with all the other Democrats at the time was because he wasn’t a Senator then. ALL of his peers voted for it.
And yes, I think there are SOME abortions that should be prevented. If a woman was NOT raped, is perfectly healthy, has a perfectly healthy child and wants an abortion because she wants a boy instead of a girl, I doubt that even YOU can justify this particular abortion.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion of things on the “performance” at the forum. I, for one, felt McCain’s appearance to be just that- a “performance”. perhaps Senator Obama’s was as well – but it struck as more thoughtful, kind considerate and respectful. Just my opinion.
But we are idealogically opposed here (most of us are)…..so we’ll just have to see what pans out.
At a certain level, we all have to vote our conscience and after much self examination, decided I have to go with mine and that’s a vote for Senator Obama.

What is a “post-term abortion” anyhow? Any interrupted pregnancy is medically termed an abortion; it’s just called a miscarriage for the same reason that the word “pregnancy” wasn’t used years ago. “Post-term” is an oxymoron; “post” means “after” and “term” relative to a pregnancy means after approximately 38 weeks gestation at which point birth usually occurs. Geevil doesn’t believe a woman has the right to her own body. He’s apparently of the school that believes in keeping a woman barefoot and pregnant.

The Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision specifically says, “that neither biologists nor doctors nor theologians can agree upon the moral status of the fetus.” But there is “absolute certainty that the woman herself does have moral status, then the conservative thing to do is to protect the woman’s interests first,”
McCain’s opinion that human rights attach to a fetus at conception doesn’t deal with what to do when there is a conflict with the rights of the woman, it in essence says that a woman LOSES her rights the moment she has sex and conceives.

I don’t know why people get stuck in an election year on the topic of abortion…the bible clearly state “thou shall not kill” and every four years people look to a new leader and their thoughts on the subject, before they can make up there minds on who they will vote for.
This topic have never been an issue for me because I don’t believe in it…and I’m not ashame to say it! Many women have them over and over and over…and not because they were raped this is a excuse to kill a human soul and asked our goverment which is usually made up of men who cannot have one in the first place, to rally behind this issue of murder. Wake up America this is a non-issue for me…read your bible and make your decision on abortion.

let’s get the quote right regarding the “experience” of Clarence Thomas. Here is what Senator Obama said.
“I don’t think he was a strong enough jurist or a legal thinker at the time for that. I profoundly disagree with his interpretation” of the Constitution, he said.”
Splitting hairs??? Maybe… could he be implying that Mr Thomas is NOW a better jurist and legal thinker and all it took was experience? Perhaps, but he DIDN’T say Thomas didn’t have enough experience.
Perhaps Senator Obama would have been a better jurist and legal thinker than Mr. Thomas at the age of 30?

al4mcattack,
I’ve listened to many different newscasts recount the forum since Saturday including Fox News Sunday, and all of them in their roundtable discussions said that Obama did a very good job. You make it sound as if he bombed. They said that McCain sounded more firm and that this might have garnered him points because it sounded presidential, whereas Obama had a more conversational and sincere tone which may have helped him in his appeals to that group as well. In all the reports I’ve heard, and I’m a political junkie, by all accounts they said both candidates did very well in presenting their case. I did come away with the impression that most thought McCain did slightly better and that they attributed it to the fact that he has learned something from his previous presidential campaign. Keep in mind that among evangelicals Obama is higher at this point than Kerry was at the same time in 04, so he is making strides among evangelicals.

Indirectly through is pushing of crappy religous right wing views yes he is. I agree were are the parents? I think they are to busy setting there kids infront of the tv instead of parenting.
And no this is not WAY out of bounds this is right on. If parents aren’t teaching kids then the state has too. Since Bush has been in office he has cut funding for sex ed which was helping to reduce teen pregnancy and abortions. Instead he’s opted for more abstance based education which statisticly isn’t working. But I agree with you alot of parents in this country are well… Just crappy parents.. So were I’m pro choice every abortion avoided is the best thing that can happen but the best way to avoid those is not to have unwanted pregnacies to begin with.

One more time! Obama does not have 25 million in book sales! Pastor Warren does. Perhaps you should have watched because this was where the Pastor asked Senator Obama for his definition of rich. Obama replied that some would argue if you have 25 million in books sales that that would be considered rich. The audience and Pastor Warren roared with laughter and Pastor Warren then reached out and initiated a high five from Obama. See, this is what happens when your information is second hand!

It is strange to think that Obama spent 20 years at Rev. Wright’s church and felt that he couldn’t mention one word about the church or its ministry. Perhaps that is what caused some of his stumbling. I don’t know how a religious person comes to terms with his faith in those circumstances.

When I heard the comment, I didn’t think McCain meant $5M per year. I assumed he meant somebody having a ‘net worth’ of $5M would be rich. I would argee with the ‘net worth’ of someone in the $5M range of being considered rich. Obviously someone who made $5M per year would definitely be considered rich.
But the whole idea “what is rich” is pretty silly. It’s sush a subjective idea and could be different things to different people. Somebody in a small town in the midwest who mades $100K per year might be considered rich to some, while somebody who lived in Manhattan or San Fransico who made $100K would barely be considered middle class by others.

McInsane is not only out of touch with the middle class, he also thinks it’s alright to have an affair with bimbo while his wife was recuperating from surgery due to a horrifying car accident. The bimbo is his current wife. Wake up America, we don’t need a creep like this.

It appears that there are pork barrel projects on both sides of the fence and I do not see Mr Mcain as a signatory on the current resolution.

Posted by: karronna | August 18, 2008, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

I thought McCain’s answer was just inadequate- giving him the benefit of the doubt that he really was kidding- what is McCain’s definition of “rich”?
I still want to know.
Also, what a dishonest cop-out for McCain to say his moral failure was the “failure” of his first marriage.
MCCAIN CHEATED ON HIS DISABLED WIFE WITH A WOMAN HALF HIS AGE.
Let’s have some “straight talk” McCain. That’s more than just the failure of a marriage. That’s a failure of character.

Posted by: julie | August 18, 2008, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

I thought McCain was very clear about taxing the rich. Unlike Obama, he doesn’t want to raise anyone’s taxes let alone “rich” people. He wants to reduce government spending instead of raising taxes. It really is a simple concept. Some of you are trying to make it more complex than it is.

Posted by: Susan | August 18, 2008, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

karonna… I’m not defending McCain’s tax plan, if he has one. I’m more concerned with Obama’s, because he is almost sure to be our next President.
I have read several DIFFERENT descriptions of Obama’s proposals for tax increases. My wife and I are senior citizens, and live mainly on our investments, which are taking a severe beating (not Obama’s fault).
But he says he will raise our tax back to 36%, or maybe 28%, 20%, or leave it at 15%, depending on which day he is asked.
He talks about a $250,000 per year income as the point at which a person is considered “rich” My wife and I make less than half that amount (total for the two of us), and it’s declining every year.
We are worried about our tax rate doubling, because frankly, we cannot afford it.
If we were able to sell ALL of our investments (which we wouldn’t do, of course), it would not be worth even CLOSE to what McCain says is a rich person’s ANNUAL income. And we’d only get it ONE time!
Until we know what’s going to happen, we have stopped buying EVERYTHING except food for the last two months. We stay home, buy nothing, and DO nothing.

Why don’t you ask Barry about his selective use of “what so ever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me?” Let’s see Barry, who could be the least? Could it be a BABY that survives an abortion and you think it is okay to let it lay on a stainless steel sink to die? Tell me Barry, if you don’t know when life begins, then you must not know when it ends either, huh. Obama’s tax plan is very straitforward, no matter how Bush-McCain tries to lie about it
If you earny less than $200,000 as an individual, or $250,00 on a joint return, there will be NO increase on any of your taxes, on regular income, dividends, capital gains, or whatever.
Both Bob Rubin, former Treasury Sec’y and Wall Street Guru, and Paul Volcker, formerly Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank are among hid advisors on tax policy.

here is what should have been said I think it isn’t a matter of being rich or poor but a matter of priorities we gave the wealthy a break to invest in the economy and they did we just didn’t tell them it was our economy not china’s that should be invested in. I mean McCain said we should do more around the world then look after our own narrow interest I just wish the well off had followed that advice and we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in.

I now leaving this post very happy because I see that none of you idiots who support McCain can defend his BS POW story and the fact that during the first half hour of Saturday’s forum he was in a car with the secret service which gave one of his cronies the chance to pull up the forum on their blackberry giving him prior knowledge of the questions. Of course he still sucked when it came to answering them.
Thanks losers!

Evangelicals will vote for alledged adulterers when the other choice is someone who supports (ON RECORD) letting babies born alive through botched abortions lay there and die. It’s a pretty clear choice.

Who are you people? Is there no one in the electorate that has the slightest idea of what living in the United States is about or has the slightest idea of what an evangelical is? This isn’t a debate between a college sophmore and a man that was suffering for his country before you bloggers were being “potty trained”. This is serious business – and until you’ve experienced the horrors of life in the real world leave the politics to “grown ups”. The most powerful position in the world can’t be entrusted to an “affirmative action” candidate. Did you ever wonder how got into Harvard and his wife got into Princeton. Its a legitimate question and its the same question that Bill Bradley was asked. We’re afraid to ask it.
The real world is not a game for kids and its not a game for demonstrating how enlightened we’ve become.

McAttack,
I know it’s not cheap in California. I used to live there. nevertheless, unless you live in a big fancy house less than $250k should allow you to live comfortably unless you invested unwisely in the highly speculative real estate market over the last few years. I have dreams for my children too – five of them…. and they include living in a world that I’m not sure I can envision under mrMcain. And Didn’t Mr Mcain vote against pay increases for the military?

Posted by: karronna | August 18, 2008, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm

Okay let’s share “war stories”…My husband and I have five children from mixed marriages… we’ve recovered from divorces and financial devastation as the aftermath…I help pay my 83 year old mother’s medical bills, we’ve bought all 5 of our children cars, we’ve helped put two of them through college. My adult daughter and her 4 year old as well as our 18 year old live in our home and although they all work…we still help “support” them -emotionally and financially. we have a decent home, drive decent cars and get to play sometimes too…We do all of this on CONSIDERABLY less than $250k per year. I’ll say it again…have you practiced good financial stewardship?

Posted by: karrronna | August 18, 2008, 7:16 pm 7:16 pm

I guess to someone with over 100 million, 5 million must look pretty paltry. I wonder what he thinks of the other 99.9% of America, whiners?

Dan – I can’t remember the cost of milk either; but that doesn’t mean that I don’t grocery shop. All I know is that I’m going to buy the milk no matter what it costs and it is a lot more today than it used to be. Now if I were going to buy arugula on the other hand, I might pay attention to the price.

Mr McCain….you are NOT my friend. I counted no less than 12 times in the Pastor Warren interview that he called me his friend…How completely detached this man is from me and MY friends that sure make alot less than his 5Million let alone 25,000 a yr. This country is being held together on the backs of those of us that make considerably less than 50,000 per year, and yet we should pay higher taxes??? I think not. I pay my share as a single 62 year old woman. I have raised my family, and lost my husband, and now as a single woman pay the highest rate with NO deductions. How is that fair taxation? John McCain clearly has a vision, but it is not for this country to prosper. As for the debate on human life and when it begins, this is a morale issue and should never be goverened by the Congress, but on a state to state basis. It is not a Federal government issue. Mr McCain…..again…..you are NOT my friend. That sounds so lame when you use it 12 times in less than 1 hour.
Complete idiot!!!! I am ready for a change.

As one of John McCain’s New Hampshire supporters in 2000, I left him when he started changing any and all positions just to win an election. Even worse,as my hero in the fie;d of more civil and decent political campaigns, to watch him now “approve this message” when the statements are out and out lies (esspecially about taxes) he became just too much a traitor to everything he once stood for. Bye Bye John

LOL McAttack…
Contrary to what you may think…i’m not stupid enough to think you could buy a house for $250K…We were talking about living on $250K per year…that’s where the projected tax increase would come in.

Posted by: Linda | August 18, 2008, 7:22 pm 7:22 pm

How is a single person paying the highest rate? You must be making a lot of money to pay the highest rate. In all seriousness, what are you complaining about if you make enough money to pay the highest rate?

Posted by: Kitty | August 18, 2008, 7:23 pm 7:23 pm

Thanks Capri for validating my sentiments exactly….and he wants to cut the rich folks taxes and increase ours??? Come on, get into the real world.

Posted by: Linda | August 18, 2008, 7:23 pm 7:23 pm

I don’t like the idea of just cutting taxes for the rich to make the economy better. Some say the rich will use the extra money to create more jobs in this country. That is crap! Have y’all seen “Wall Street”? Greed is still in vogue in America, and not all rich people are as interested in investing back in Americas and their communities as Bill Gates or Oprah. Some will take that extra money and spend it elsewhere. They’ll buy that huge mansion near the French Riviera or take a yacht around the Pacific. And big greedy CEOs will take the money and invest in overseas markets. So this “trickle down wealth” mess is a big lie that the greedy rich try to promote. For the rich to be rich, you have to have more people on the bottom barely getting by. Low taxes should only be a privilege for the rich who actually invest back into America with jobs and other programs to help the people they get rich off of. It shouldn’t be for people who don’t give a crap about the middle class.

Posted by: Tone | August 18, 2008, 7:25 pm 7:25 pm

McAttack,
Explain to me why McCain’s version is better for the military.
LOL – I am self employed and can’t dream of five weeks off – i would venture to say you have more than I. I’ll bet McCain does too as does Obama. But it DOES cost money to run the country. and there are many (and California is a PRIME example) that been involved in speculation over the last few years and it would have been nice to see what some of that $ could have done domestically.

Posted by: karronna | August 18, 2008, 7:29 pm 7:29 pm

The pastor asked mccain and Obama specifically for a figure to define rich. Obama’s answer was Great and as usual mc-more-war refused to answer the question saying, well everyone’s taxes should be low, what a wimpy pandering answer. mc-more-war needs to retire with his millionaire wife, the one he cheated with while married to his first wife. The highest rates are paid by higher incomes. I just double checked and someone making about 60 grand with no deductions pays almost 20% in taxes, whereas someone making 30 grand pays about 13.5%. The argument about deductions doesn’t really hold any water considering it costs a lot of money to raise a child – more than the deduction. Plus, you got your deduction when you were raising your kids, assuming you had them.

It all comes down to whether or not you think we should continue the bush policies. If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. If you think that it’s time we start to get out of iraq and do some positive things for the average American instead of just the top 1% then vote for Obama.

That’s a really scary thought. Here we are fretting over the US taxing the US citizens, and along comes Obama wanting to give that right to the United Nations. EEEEK! Bottom line here is that John McCain and his wife are very wealthy, and have no clue as to how the little people live nor do they care. He needs to just retire and have a good life. What the heck is he doing in politics anyway? He really has NO clue about the little guy. And we are the majority. Barack Obama has his faults, however knows how life is for the little guy and I feel safer with him taking care of business.

I’m surprised by the overall content of these comments. It would seem that in America today some people care more about how much it costs them to burn oil than the flame of life that is extinguished in hospital rooms across the nation every day. Although Obama’s intentions on solving the oil crisis is to simply raise the taxes on oil presumably to make people cut down on their usage. McCain does not come close to what this nation is in need of, but Obama’s policies insist on shoving the nation further down the path it is walking on. Perhaps we should be promoting our companies, encouraging those who keep labor in the US with some form of tax break, preserving the jobs needed for the lower and middle classes. Maybe we should pull some of our investments in foreign corporations, and move them back home. I will not tell you which candidate is the right choice, but I can tell you which policies you should be looking for. When we encourage funding in Social Security and welfare, how is the the money acquired? In the form of taxes. More Social Security/Welfare and lower taxes are not related interests.

If I had over 5 million a year I think I’d deserve a bigger tax break.
People, stop and think. How can we have someone who has little experience run our country. Besides, it doesn’t matter what he promises since he would be only one piece of the government.

It’s easy to think rich people would just retire and not encourage their kids to join the military. Then, along comes McCain. His children could certainly ride the family coattails and not care. It does my heart good to know the McCains instead chose to encourage and are proud of at least one of the children’s military service. I’m not sure how many of them have served. It’s a great role model for Americans and the world. God bless the military and all the military families out there.

McCain really can’t relate to the average American. He has been living the life of a multi-millionare for too many years, ever since he married his second wife Cindy. Thus the idea of cutting taxes for the wealthy seems like a good idea to him.
Obama on the other hand, until the sale of his best-selling books, was only in the middle-class income level. The whole point of his campaign is championing for the lower and middle-class citizen, as these classes are suffering greatly, greatly due to the Bush policies, that McCain will continue.
I wish the greedy rich supporting McCain could understand that if they continue to undermine the middle-class and grow the poor class, the entire soundness of the country will suffer.

McCain never answered the question on defining rich, and don’t you find it suspicious that he knew when the supreme court judge question would be asked?

It’s pretty clear in my mind. A vote for Obama is a vote for higher taxes. The less the government spends and stays in check with their budget the better off we’ll be.
Believe me…if Obama gets elected, he’ll have his skinny little hand in your pocket from day one.

Both candidates answered in a joking fashion. How can you answer a questions like this one otherwise? Rich is a matter of perception, not definition.
This is a non issue and does not deserve the attention is is getting.

Posted by: bullyforhim | August 18, 2008, 8:24 pm 8:24 pm

Whatever the definition of Rich is, IT IS NOT THE GOVERNMENT’s MONEY! It is the individual’s money, yet liberals and some conservatives seem to think that the right to property (includes money) does not exist.
Democrats and Conservatives spend 56% of all dollars spent by government on wastefull social programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Securtity, yet no where in the founding fathers ideals for the country assert that a failed ponzi scheme in order to mete out acts of beneficence is what government should focus on.

Posted by: Socialism Sucks | August 18, 2008, 8:25 pm 8:25 pm

What is wrong with you people? Did you not even LISTEN and WATCh the “debate” in question before commenting?? When McCain was asked the “who’s rich” question, he joked about the 5M but then did NOT further explain who he thought was rich other than people with their family and health… while i agree that’s rich, that’s NOT what the moderator was talking about.
Obama also joked and said 25M in book sales. He OBVIOUSLY was talking abou tthe reverend moderator… however, Obama went ONE STEP FURTHER and explained very precisely who he believes is NOT rich and who he belives IS rich. Those earning 150K or less are middle class he says… those who make 250K+/year are UPPer class (rich). Remember, your tax rate is based on your income in that range. So if he wants reduced taxes for those maknigi less than 150K, fine… then the person who made 250K pays LESS taxes on their first 150K of income. But then it gradually goes UP for the remaining income.
Then many people say “well shoot, small businesses are all affected… BULL. Small businesses are taxes on PROFITS (i.e., income). If, after everything is said and done and they’re making 250K+ then they pay higher taxes! Simple as that!
Geezus, a lot of people are really clueless.
Obama has a SOUND tax plan. McCain has a tax plain based on cutting for EVERYONE. Who pays that tax bill then? Someone has to… we’re insanely in debt now thanks to Bush’s tax cuts. yay tax cuts.

Posted by: Meema32 | August 18, 2008, 8:25 pm 8:25 pm

Whatever happened to the idea of the “flat tax?” Remember that idea from the ’90s – where everyone, regardless of income, would pay a set percentage of their income to federal taxes, say 12% – the tax rate reduces taxes for many and simplifies the tax code for others (especially businesses). I always liked that idea and just wondered why proponents of the flat tax let the issue die away.

How do you figure Bill??? unless you make 250K/year+ then your taxes go DOWN. Since over 90+% of Americans fall under 250K/year, they will see a tax CUT. Explain to me how voting for Obama means voting for tax increases. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

McCain does not have a clue what it takes to meet a middle class lifestyle in this country when has lived with a spouse worth hundreds of millions, private jets and exclusive estates.
I wonder how much money his family has saved on their taxes with teh Bush tax cuts? millions I am sure.
He and Bush want tax rates lower than they were under Ronald Reagan. Ha!

McCain’s Broken Classics…..
#1 Hit: I told You “The Surge Would Work”
Note: As Though McCain Originated “The Surge” When in Fact “The Surge” is General McFarland’s Military Strategy and it did not happen at Anbar, “The Surge” happened in (Bagdad) The Bloody Anbar Awakening Happened Almost a Year Before “The Surge” and General Petraeus was Not in Iraq, During “The Anbar Awakening” or “The Surge”…
The Anbar Awakening: Is the Crucial Turning Point in the Iraq War and without it, The Surge would still be at Day One and the Casualties Would still be Prevalent. Yet Semi-Senile John McCain has Projected himself as the Creater of “The Surge”, as though, Mccain Concieved, Created and his “Surge Strategy” was Implemented by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the President, based on Mccain’s “Military Experience” when all He did was Sign on a Non-Partisan BandWagon to send an Additional 20,000 Troops….
Thats All McCain Did.
McCain Hit #2: “I know how to Win Wars”
Oh Really John ? Are you Counting Viet Nam as a WIN for America ? You were Locked Up and being Tortured Day & Night, Remember ? John, Name One Military Strategy that you had Concieved, Created and had Implemented by the President & his Joint Chiefs of Staff…
Please and Don’t Mention “The Surge” I just Squashed that LIE
McCain Hit #3: “No Timetable for Withdrawal, Come Home in Victory”
What is a Victory to You John McCain ? The President of Iraq wants us OUT, The President of the USA is setting a “Time Horizon” and its been said, the Time Frame is (2010) Yet, We should Leave in Victory, Not Enough Dead Bodies, for you John ??
—————————————
John McCain Hit #4: “The 4 1/2 Year Military Strategy Failed, Because it was a Poorly Planned & Poorly Executed”
McCain is Condemning Joint Chiefs Of Staff, The President, The Vice President, Himself, The Senators & Congressmen and Women who Voted on all the Military Strategies, leading up, to the “Surge” and Above all else the US Military Performed their Jobs Incompetently, Thats Exactly what he’s saying…
Yet McCain Double Talks and Calls the U.S Military Honorable, Brave and Corageous..McCain has to Open his EYES WIDE and Accept that he was a Major Force in Voting 95% of the Time on the Iraq War and All Bush Military, Foreign and Domestic Policies….Fact

I think a lot of people have no idea how wealthy McCain is. He is incredibly rich…. private plane, many different homes, etc. etc. Nothing wrong with that, but if you think he relates to the average American, you’re wrong. He didn’t earn that money, he married into it…………. People talk about taxes as “punishing hard work and endurance.” This is not how it is for many, many wealthy people in this country…………………Go to the wealthiest parts of this country — mostly on the East and West coasts — they are full of kids who will inherit Mommy and Daddy’s wealth effortlessly, and live easy lives. They loved Bush, who kept them happy. They would love McCain as well.

Posted by: Michael | August 18, 2008, 9:04 pm 9:04 pm

back hundred and more years when times were tough the rich took there wealth and created jobs and used there money for the betterment of this nation and taht is when capitalism worked great but now the rich when times get tough they pull there money out or use the bad time to get even more wealthy..that is why we need to tax the rich until the realize they should give freely instead of being greedy…

Obama’s economic plan will kill the American economy. Remember Ronald Reagen’s supply side economics and the Reagen tax breaks. A rising tide lifts all boats, The tax breaks to the rich allows for the creation of jobs, and charities. The top ten percent of our wealth pay almost fifty percent of the taxes, they have earned the tax break. Also we should be able use our money to as we see fit. The government has no right to take our money and give it to some one else. I would gladly give to charity and do, but it is my choice because it is my money. Obama want to take that away from us. He want s to take away the American spirit and dream of hard and smart work will lead to success. Obama is a socialist. They talk of always taking people down but never raising them up. Socialism will destroy our perfect system of free enterprise. AS for health care and welfare the US government has no constitutional right to take our money and give it to some one else. He will destroy whether knowingly or not our perfect union of the Constitutional Republic of The United States of America

of course the rich save more money on tax cuts-duh they make more money, so whatever taxes they pay or dont pay are going to be more e.g.mike makes 5,000,000 a yr. he pays, lets say, (10%) 500,000 taxes. 25% cut saves him 125,000. john makes 100,000 a yr pays 10,000 taxes. cut saves him 2,500.hey! no fair! favoring the rich guy! lets tax the rich guy MUCH more and give to the mid. class guy! ARE YOU NUTS?!!

John W. you say that as if someone making $4 million is not rich. Obama is arguing about that that figure ($5 million) is the lowest amount used by McSAME that qualifies people as RICH. Which is reflected in his policies. If it looks like a bird, feels like a bird and sings like a bird, then its probably a bird.

Posted by: tom | August 18, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

actually, most richer people don’t give very much to the needy. That’s why we have social programs, because as a group we can recognize that they are useful, but as individuals we’re too stingy (most of us) to do what we know should be done. Obama’s tax plan lowers taxes for everyone making 112K or less, MORE than McCain’s. What was that? oh, yeah…MORE than McCain’s plan. If you make more than that, vote for McCain…if you make less, vote for Obama. Let’s see how that works.

I make less than $90k/yr yet 42% of my income goes to some kind of tax or entitlement. In spite of sending $37k/year to Washington DC, Lansing, and my local county seat, the roads & bridges are awful, school districts are in debt, university tuition keeps going up, and public officials have pensions and gold-plated healthcare. As far as I’m concerned, Dems and the GOP are both responsible for overtaxation, overspending, and fiscal waste. In the end, I really don’t think Obama, McCain, the Dems, and the GOP are interested in tackling the real problem: overspending.
Also, I know my family won’t benefit from trickle-down Reaganomics. However, I also know we won’t benefit from universal healthcare and energy tax credits because my family will be the ones paying out more than we receive (along with many other middle- and upper-middle class Americans). This country has a perverse ideology of driving everyone but rich US Senators (Dem & GOP) and wealthy individuals incomes to the median income.

Everyone who heard or watched it knows McCain was joking. Obama, Pelosi, Dean, Kerry, and the other liberals have no sense of humor. “Bitter” Americans do.

Posted by: geevill | August 18, 2008, 9:31 pm 9:31 pm

The fact is that McCain tried his best to duck the question posed to him by Pastor Rick Warren, couldn’t come up with a real response so he tried to “joke” himself out of it. Unfortunately for him, he made himself look foolish.
Obama by contrast came up with a figure of more than $250,000 as a baseline where tax breaks should end. A fair assessment in my opinion. McCain should be exposed as siding with the rich against the middle class and poorer citizens of our country, just like George Bush the younger (and his father) both very wealthy men who support tax breaks on the richest in our country while cutting assistance to the lowest earners. If you make less than five million dollars in McCain’s mind you should get tax breaks, while Social Security, Medicare, and just about every other program that helps the lowest income people in our country should be emasculated.
Not what I want for our next President, the rich getting richer while the poor suffer even more than they are.

If you make under 112K, McCain’s taxes are higher than Obama’s. McCain is happy to tax the poor and middle class so the rich can continue to give him big campaign donations.

McCain talks about reigning in spending when his own party has overseen the national debt climb to over $9 trillion. He talks about earmarks which are a problem but make up less than 1% of the federal budget. In fact Citizens Against Government Waste say that the 08 budget has $13.2 billion in pork. The last Republican led budget in 06 had $29 billion and the year before was over $27 billion. And the Defense Department / Wars got $699 billion in 2007. 53 times more. I suggest McCain calm down on the rhetoric when it comes to Iran and Russia before we let him open up a 3rd or 4th front. Why he thinks killing is better than talking I’ll never understand.

And the Dept of Energy estimates that at full capacity, any and all off shore oil drilling will yield another 1.4 billion gallons of gas a year. And when Obama responded to a woman’s question of “What can I do today to save gas?” by stating that she should make sure her car is in proper working order and her tires are properly inflated, the McCain camp jump all over him saying it ridiculous and how this was his energy plan. McCain personally attacked Obama for it before quietly releasing a statement saying that proper tire inflation does in fact have a positive impact on fuel economy. To gp further the DOT, AAA, and other groups published findings that proper tire inflation could lead to an annual gas savings of 2.8 billion gallons. Twice as much. Look it up if you don’t believe me. and a properly tuned engine can save up to 40%! These are things that could be done immediately. Bush should have been on primetime TV months ago telling America what they could be doing to save money but who exactly are he and McCain trying to help? I think McCain sees that the uninformed of us are looking for anything to ease prices and drilling makes sense on the surface so he is using it for political advantage even though it does nothing to help working people and never will. Unless we get off oil altogether, this tiny amount would do nothing to satisfy Asia when it comes online in 7-10 years. Meanwhile we will continue to pay Russia, Iran, and Venezuela billions of dollars to keep our oil fueled lifestyle. Thanks but no thanks John.

A lot of the people railing about how ‘wealthy’ McCain is sound a lot like the same people who didn’t notice that John Kerry was in exactly the same position a few years ago. At least we know where Mc’s money comes from. Obama’s seems to have a secret source, maybe he got a subprime loan to finance that 1.5 million dollar house. According to my mortgage company, he should be making at least $750,000 a year to be able to afford it.

Obama is lying his bottom off, he has already voted to raise taxes on anyone making over $32,000 a year which doesn’t include his little pet projects like using Tax money to give the corrupt UN over $700 billion. I can’t believe he actually expects people to buy his nonsense. Basically for each $50,000 your family makes, he wants to raise your taxes by atleast $2,000.

Cindy McCain’s Half Sister ‘Angry’ She’s Hidden
Source: http://www.NPR.org
Kathleen Hensley Portalski displays newspaper clippings of her father in World War II, as well as snapshots of herself as a child with her father.
Nicholas Portalski
Portalski is shown with her late father, Jim Hensley, who also was Cindy McCain’s father.
Read the original profile on Cindy McCain.
Ted Robbins/NPR
Nicholas Portalski, whose mother is McCain’s half sister, says it’s “very, very hurtful” that he and his mother haven’t been recognized.
All Things Considered, August 18, 2008 Last Tuesday, NPR broadcast a story about Cindy McCain’s business and charity work. In it, Ted Robbins described McCain as the only child of Jim Hensley, a wealthy Arizona businessman.
The next morning, NPR received an e-mail from Nicholas Portalski of Phoenix, who heard the story with his mother.
“We were listening to the piece about Cindy McCain on NPR, All Things Considered, and it just struck us very hard,” Portalski said.
His mother, Kathleen Hensley Portalski, is also Hensley’s daughter.
The Portalski family is accustomed to hearing Cindy McCain described as Hensley’s only child.
She’s been described that way by news organizations from The New Yorker and The New York Times to Newsweek and ABC.
McCain herself routinely uses the phrase “only child,” as she did on CNN last month.
“I grew up with my dad,” she said then. “I’m an only child. My father was a cowboy, and he really loved me very much, but I think he wanted a son occasionally.”
McCain’s father was also a businessman — and twice a father.
“I’m upset,” Kathleen Portalski says. “I’m angry. It makes me feel like a nonperson, kind of.”
Who Is Kathleen Hensley Portalski?
Documents show Kathleen Anne Hensley was born to Jim and Mary Jeanne Hensley on Feb. 23, 1943. They had been married for six years when Kathleen was born.
Jim Hensley was a bombardier on a B-17, flying over Europe during World War II.
He was injured and sent to a facility in West Virginia to recuperate. During that time, while still married to Mary Jeanne, Hensley met another woman — Marguerite Smith. Jim divorced Mary Jeanne and married Marguerite in 1945.
Cindy Lou Hensley was born nine years later, in 1954.
She may have grown up as an only child, but so did her half sister, Kathleen, who was raised by a single parent.
Portalski says she did see her father and her half sister from time to time.
“I saw him a few times a year,” she says. “I saw him at Christmas and birthdays, and he provided money for school clothes, and he called occasionally.”
Jim Hensley also provided credit cards and college tuition for his grandchildren, as well as $10,000 gifts to Kathleen and her husband, Stanley Portalski. That lasted a decade, they say. By then, Jim Hensley had built Hensley and Co. into one of the largest beer distributorships in the country. He was worth tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars.
Sole Inheritor To Hensley’s Estate
When Hensley died in 2000, his will named not only Portalski but also a daughter of his wife Marguerite from her earlier marriage. So, Cindy McCain may be the only product of Jim and Marguerite’s marriage, but she is not the only child of either.
She was, however, the sole inheritor of his considerable estate.
Kathleen Portalski was left $10,000, and her children were left nothing. It’s a fact Nicholas Portalski says his sister discovered the hard way.
“What she found in town — on the day of or the day before or the day after his funeral — was that the credit card didn’t work anymore,” Nick says.
The Portalskis live in a modest home in central Phoenix. Kathleen is retired, as is her husband. Nicholas Portalski is a firefighter and emergency medical technician looking for work.
They say it would have been nice if they were left some of the Hensley fortune.
They also say they are Democrats, but Nicholas Portalski says he had another reason for coming forward.
“The fact that we don’t exist,” he says. “The fact that we’ve never been recognized, and then Cindy has to put such a fine point on it by saying something that’s not true. Recently, again and again. It’s just very, very hurtful.”
Kathleen Portalski says she’d like an acknowledgment and an apology.
NPR asked the McCain campaign — specifically, Cindy McCain — to comment or respond. Neither replied.

Senator Obama’s comments are becoming more and more childish and irrational. Guess, he is not thinking like a Harvard graduate since he is losing more supporters every day. Guess that what happens when a candidate’s abilities are manufactured by PR people instead of real professional political work. Bring back Hillary Clinton.

The key information is that McCain was joking. In contrast, Obama was Not joking about his support for sex-education for kindegarten age children. More tax payer funding to establish Obama’s age-appropriate sex-ed for 5yr olds. More Americans would move to home-school in protest to the lack of focus on real education needs in our public schools.

Posted by: geevill | August 19, 2008, 9:33 am 9:33 am

McCain was absolutely correct in saying his joking comment would be distorted. Just like using the “100 years” comment, Obama needs all the sound bites he can grab because he does not have enough knowledge and substance to talk about the issues. Whether you are joking about 5 million as rich, or 25 million for book sales as rich, we clearly understood both joking comments. Obama needs a soundbite. If 3 million is to be considered middle class, as Obama suggested in distorting McCain’s comment, then surely this must mean that Obama believes that 15 million is the middle class bracket. Let us have another Warren interview of both candidates. We clearly see the stark differences in preparedness, or lack of preparedness, of the candidates already.
It gets down to the experiences you have, the knowledge you have, and the ability to speak on the issues at any time.

Just out of being curious… since when did we have to fight to have personal liberties. They are clearly stated in our constitution. If you are gay you should be able to get married. If you are pregnant and the circumstances aren’t prime for a baby (which honestly they never are) then get an abortion. Our constitution protects the least favored opinion. It makes it to where that opinion is OKAY and having the freedom to act on it is OKAY. Not saying that makes it right. The KKK isn’t right but its legal because its protected by our constitution. Personally I am quite disappointed in our candidates for president. If I wanted to throw my vote away I would vote independent. It would be okay for Obama to critisize Mc Cain if he could give just ONE straight answer on anything at all. Quite honestly the only thing I agree with the man on is the fact that he wants to bring the soldiers home. He has voted some 24 times for tax increases. Not saying our country is looking for a McCain either… I don’t think he is just another Bush. That’s quite an inaccurate description actually because years ago the two were disputing over the situation in Iraq, taxes, and health care. We really do need an over all change. I haven’t made my decision for presidential candidate yet so I’m currently undecided. I don’t want an extremist running the country and Obama has proven himself to be on. Their is an old saying that goes “If you listen to what someone is saying they will tell you everything you need to know”. He has told this country alot as far as his plans and ideas for this country. While I think change is good, I don’t think he would bring a good change. On the other hand I think Mc Cain is simply to old fashioned. One thing that remains the same between both candidates is that neither of them have a clue about what American life is like day to day. Neither of them probably even know how much a gallon of milk costs. Thats enough from me…

Sen McCain might think it’s funny sitting on his many, many millions and joke about money but trust me the Americans like myself who are struggling to pay their taxes on piddling amounts while you give huge breaks to the mega rich and most Corps don’t pay taxes is NOT a laughing matter. It is NOT a joke that small business is being taxed out of existance while your big business cohorts get off scott free. It is a disgrace AND it is offensive!
Does anyone remember the email that was forwarded around by the Reps 4yrs ago that’s core message was John Kerry is incapable of representing “us” as he is so rich that he cannot pssibly be in touch with the regular people in the US. The email had pics purported to be Kerry’s many homes. Remember that? Where are the emails showing McCain’s many homes? The emails talking about how rich he is? The emails showing dogs pissing on his lawn signs?
Seems to me middle school bahavior and ridiculous statements are all coming from the right. They seem to think the WHOLE thing is a big old joke! Heck check out Sacramento CA’s Repub website to find the most current “jokes” about Sen Obama….on their official Repub website. Pathetic…
Grow up people and base your decisions on something that matters!!! Something besides a middle name, a dog peeing, a “new ship” or the Pres retirement pay package. Issues NOT insults please.

To those who would steal the virtue of God’s greatness to make greed appear as grace in efforts to use the flock for their purposes.
Do you think God would allow anyone to buy their way into heaven without addressing their own sinfullness if only they managed to save enough poor unborn babies from neighborhoods they had never choose to minister within, amongst people who’s lives exist within a poverty which in part is a direct consequence of divisive and racially bias policies and a intentionally forgotten national history which those same individuals would deny played any socio-economic role.
Ha! (There’s another testament in that book that explains how un-perfected people can be saved.)
You lie to yourself if you think that overturning Roe vs. Wade would amount to anything other that an attempt to transfer a spiritual virtue into a secular law. (The bible dosen’t speak anywhere directly about the developmental process of a human zygote – any conclusion made as such is built on a intepretation or dicernment) Americans don’t have to be Judeo-Christian to recieve their “equal protection” under American law. This is a politically motivated intepretation of a spiritual virtue, perpetuated in the name of Christ, which would legally require all Americans to abide by one lone intepretation of a Judeo-Christian virtue, coined as legitamate federal legislation. What gives this interpretation precedence, race, money, politics?
I am a Christian, I feel that aborting a child is a morally dispicable act which I will oppose at every occasion I have to minister to a “faltering child of God” BUT I will not ask my Government to legislate my faith into secular LAW. My Gods law is above the petty LAWS of man, and beyond the foolish mind of man. Man attempting to legislate for God is ANTI-CHRISTIAN, abortion however terrible is a forgivable sin to God, which has been paid for in full by Christ on the cross. Our job as Christians is not to defeat all the evil in the world, CHRISTIAN PEOPLE, ALL THE EVIL IN THE WORLD HAS ALREADY BEEN DEFEATED IT WAS DEFEATED ON THE CROSS IF YOU CALL YOURSELF BY THAT NAME. We don’t die because of the existence evil, but rather we die FOR A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. IF ONLY WE SPREADED THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST AS WE WERE ADMONISHED TO DO IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, JESUS WOULD CHANGE THE HEARTS OF THOSE CONSIDERING ABORTION, AND IN ADDITION TO THE COUNTRY GAINING A NEW LIFE WE IN THE FOLD OF GOD WOULD GAIN ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER IN CHRIST.
But this law would that child of God to jail, which I feel would push one away from the conviction and repentance gained through the reflection on that Sacrifice God make for us through his only begotten Son. Spread that not hate, and judgement, stop pretending that people unlike you abort children out of evil and immorality, you too was once a sinner unsaved and destined for destruction. REMEBER THAT

bernadette, come on! your smarter than that.
Rev. Warren started at 50,000 knowing he made thant much before breakfast, the Sen. was making the point that this was a Rep campaign event tailored for that specific audience, not a honest conversation.
250,000.00 or 3-4% of the country was his honest answer and you know that.
0.001% of the country makes 5,000,000.00 that leaves 99.999%
to fight over the remaining 25% of GDP left.
Where do you fit in?

Lesson to be learned by John McCain:
Don’t crack any jokes that will be grabbed up like life-preservers by the sinking campaign of your opponent.
Even if you acknowledge that your humor is used to further your point of view — Don’t do it. It will be in the news for days, and the sky will be falling for many.
