Obama: Rested and Ready to Rumble?

ABC News’ Andy Fies reports: Is there a vacation effect at work with Candidate Obama?

In his first appearance since hitting the beach in Hawaii, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., hit a minefield of social issues in front of Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church congregation.  While he was not as well received as Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who followed him, he was very much at ease, even exchanging a high five with Warren during the interview.

He just seemed more relaxed than he did in the days between his return from Europe and his vacation.

And could it be that he spent time during the vacation absorbing the catalogue of criticisms tossed at his campaign lately?  Much of his talk this morning -– his first campaign event since his return — appeared to be a point-by-point response to those arguing he has not forcefully battled McCain’s more negative message.

He was focused and blunt in his attacks on his opponent, three times stopping just short of calling McCain a liar. Of McCain’s call for offshore oil drilling, Obama said, "He’s not telling you the truth about what it’s gonna take to free ourselves from dependence on foreign oil." Obama zeroed in on McCain’s opposition to alternative energy tax credits and added, "Then he’s got the nerve to stand up there on television and talk about how he believes in alternative energy. It’s just not true!"

And in some of these "honesty" attacks, was Obama even throwing in subtle — or perhaps not so subtle — reminders of McCain’s advanced years for good measure?  Near the beginning of his remarks, he asked, "Are you gonna have somebody who’s going to tell you the truth about how we’re gonna change America, or somebody who’s gonna run the same old tired campaigns that have been run every few years?"  He continued, "Basically what John McCain has done is he’s hired the same old folks who brought you George W. Bush."

As if in answer to those who say he hasn’t connected with ordinary voters, he seemed to try extra hard today.  He added a new refrain when he spoke of his past, which some have called "exotic":

"My story is your story," he said. "We have a common story of previous generations working hard so we can have a better life."

Maybe he just woke up and read Patrick Healy’s front page story in the New York Times or Frank Rich’s column in the same paper.  But the concerns they report have been swirling around the campaign for weeks.

Maybe on the beach in Hawaii, Obama woke up and smelled the fear.

I used to be a democrat, not anymore. Although I’d never vote for McCain, I’d choose him over Nobama!

I got removed, so here once again!
What A loser! I used to be a democrat, not anymore. I’d never vote for McCain, but I’d choose him over Nobama. I’ll be writing in Paris Hilton I guess. She’s a much better choice than these two.

Well it’s time for the Obama campaign to fight back and go on OFFENSE.

Posted by: vickie | August 17, 2008, 8:17 pm 8:17 pm

Nice sping, but Obama’s performance was decent, but certainly not great or even good.
Please just look at how he stumbled over the abortion rights questions. Sad. He’s pro choice, but understands pro lifers and wants to work with them to make sure there are no more abortions (but, of course, he won’t make it law).
Poorly argued, trying to pander. Just like his oil drilling concession. He’s against it, but will drill in the name of “unity” and in order to reach compromise.
Why elect a man who caves on his principles when necessary for him to secure a nomination?

Everything Obama said was the opposite of what he has been saying all year!!

Mcain said enough to scare any woman who believes it is between God and themselves what they choose. Funny watching a man (McCain) say we need less government, but he has no problem flexin his muscle when it comes to government exercising its right when it comes to birth) (OF course! There is no free market in that!) Screw banks and healthcare, we’ll just regulate births.
WTF?
If you are republican, you better hold on, if abortion becomes illegal- be ready to take care of an onslaught of poor children in the welfare system. You heard me, and I warned you-
What a woman chooses is between her and God- it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

That was very funny kim! I think that for many of the people on these blogs Obama has to use really small words. Sort of like those rapid fire stupid responses we got from McCain last night.
The old man with the yellow teeth will never be president!

This Obama is a liar himself, trying to call McCain a liar. That’s hypocrisy everyone should see about this Obama.

Posted by: country voter | August 17, 2008, 8:38 pm 8:38 pm

Since everyone is entitled to their opinion, here is mine:
What I saw last night watching the forum at Saddleback was two very different types of leaders. Sen. McCain would be reactionary and Sen. Obama would be calculating. Sen. Obama is a thinker and in my opinion, that’s what we need in leadership. Someone who is willing to consider all points of view. As far as the abortion issue is concerned, Sen. Obama stated that while he does not support abortion, he doesn’t believe that laws should criminalize a women’s right to chose what to do with her own body and that the woman has to bear the burden of making such a gut-wrenching, moral decision. What he did say is that more focus should be on preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place. Plus, I heard on CNN this morning during Rick Vargas’ conversation with Pastor Warren that McCain wasn’t in the “holding tank” as previously reported and that he wasn’t even at the church during Sen. Obama’s turn with Pastor Warren. I found it odd that on one couple of the questions, McCain answered the questions before Pastor Warren even asked the question. McCain was clearly pandering to the evangelical crowd at the church especially when he kept referring to them as “my friends.”

Warren just admitted Mccain was not in a cone of silence. I thought as much. Those answers to the 3 wise men were too quick for everyone. It shows that he was not smart at all.

While, I am African American MY STORY IS NOT OBAMA’S STORY. This guy is a walking slogan.
Also who says that poor women get abortions at all? On the contrary, most abortions are performed on middle and upper class white women. Take a look on the south side of Chicago or Bed stuy does anyone in those neighborhoods look like they give a damn about Roe V. Wade being overturned? Can they afford an abortion?

Posted by: Samantha | August 17, 2008, 8:47 pm 8:47 pm

He should have pretended as if he never heard the questions. Mccain is a CHEAT and would do anything to win the elections. We should also check the Georgia angle. I suspect a FRAUD TOO. Why would a country with an army of 20000 go into war with an army of 1 million?

Posted by: vuzous | August 17, 2008, 8:49 pm 8:49 pm

WE WISH OBAMA A GREAT WELCOME BACK FROM HIS HOLIDAYS. GREAT LEADERSHIP WITH VSION AND WELL INFORMED LEADER WHO WILL LEAD AMERICA AND THE WORLD IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. GOD SAVE AMERICA FROM McSAME, NO NEED FOR A 4 MORE YEARS OF FAILLED POLICIES AND LACK OF LEADERSHIP.

I’m sick of canned, rehearsed candidates like McCain.
Obama obviously spoke from his heart.
McCain just repeated all the one liners his advisers taught him. I don’t think McCain even believes in God. When he talks, he sounds so practiced and empty.
And i can’t believe he managed to squeeze in his “drill here, drill now” stump-speech bark. What an idiot. McCain is the one who voted against a bill that would have required oil companies to sell our oil to us, Americans, before selling our oil to foreign countries.

Posted by: cami | August 17, 2008, 8:54 pm 8:54 pm

First, the story from Obama’s Supporters was that McCain was rehearsed, just reeling off his stump speech, that he had given those same answers countless times at townhall meetings, etc.
Now, the spin is that McCain cheated, listened in on Obama’s performance so he could prepare his answers beforehand.
Neither story explains why Obama was a bumbling, stumbling fool who could not come up with one coherent answer, no matter how much “thought” he had given the question.
Obama Supporters are flooding the blogs with posts of how “well” he did last night at the forum in a desperate attempt to control the message. America will no longer be fooled. Right now, clips of Obama at the Forum, raw and uncut, is running 24/7 on the cable news cycle. The Forum is now in television repeat mode and has made it to the Internet.
I think Obama’s free ride is just about over.

“Above Your Pay Grade?” Give me a break. Whatever happened to “The Buck Stops here” Senator?
CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, The Washington Post, and The New York Times have tried to keep the American voter in the dark in terms where Obama stands on many important issues. Thank goodness Rick Warren, a Pastor has done what many reporters have refused to do; that is ask Obama some tough questions regarding where he stands on the issues facing this nation. It is ironic that the Main Stream media has caused the Church to inherit a permanent place as a legitimate venue in future Presidential election debates. Thank you CNN! Your hidden agenda just backfired!
And what about that wimpy answer from Obama regarding his pay grade? Why can’t you just be a man and tell it like it is Senator Obama? Why do you feel obligated to hide your true intentions behind an accomplished speechwriter and an unusually good ability to read flowery speech from a teleprompter?

Posted by: GeraldD | August 17, 2008, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

obama sounds like sour grapes to me. he fumbled at the forum and now he is trying to re assert himself with insults toward his opponent. obama sounds angry, resentful and bitter. this guy cannot stand the fact that unlike his ‘follower’s’ the rest of us don’t faint at his presence.
although i have not yet decided who if any of the candidates i will support obamas performace last night was dismal, clumsy, and timid. mccain shoots from the hip and that scares me also. pathetic choices, that is where we stand.

LeeLee,
Are you being too tough on Obama? After all, he just spent a weak at the beach in Hawaii to get battle hardened for the fall campaign. At this point only about 1/2 per cent of Americans can even afford a Hawaii vacation. I suppose we could all live vacariously through Obama but that just doesn’t seem to be too fulfilling.

George W McCain couldn’t answer a single question without telling a forty year old war story…some of which have been proven fantasies, invented many years after the war.
Looks like he’ll be real comfortable sitting in his rocking chair next year…telling endless “war stories” to his fellow residents at the retirement home in Phoenix.

Posted by: wilder5121 | August 17, 2008, 10:09 pm 10:09 pm

I appreciated Obama’s conversational
approach to the forum last night.
He was humble, and answered the questions honestly.
McCain answers were short- repeating his stump speeches- word for word- nothing new in his practiced stories.
His interest in aggressive action toward other nations- bothered us.It’s obvious McCain likes to engage in war activities. He was not interested in our economy- only his pandering ideas on oil.

The news is out. Mccain was not in a cone of silence yesterday. He came in 35 minutes into the forum. So how did they flip the coin? Obama was good but unlike Mccain, Mccain was just too good.

What a joke, CNN just reported that when Obama was answering the questions last night at the forum McCain was in a hotel room and then in a motercade on the way on to the event. No wonder McCain sounded like he was on his game last night, he had already heard the frigen questions.

Mccain is a cheat but I guess the MSM will not call him on this. Pastor Rick Warren need to go on air tomorrow and let everyone know the truth. Why did he say a coin was flipped? When did they flip coin if Mccain was not in the building?

An interesting news report came up today that’s all over the internet. McCain lifted his “Cross in the Dirt” story from The Gulag Archipelago by Alexandr Solzhenitsyn. Nice work, Mr. McCain.
The news report is at Daily Kos online. Google dailykos, because we can’t post links in here.

Obama treated it like a conversation which is what is was. Mccain treated it like a debate which is fine. They both had their different styles. But McCain’s answers were to pat and rehearsed. He also pandered to the conservatives. God knows he needs them to win. Not sure he won them over though.

Blowhard George W McCain said last night he’d follow “Bin Laden to the gates of Hell” and “I know how to get him”.
Okay, Blowhard. If you know how to “get him”…why haven’t you told anybody these past seven years?
Either you’re full of it…or you’re letting Bin Laden run around free to help you poltically. Which is it, Blowhard McCain?

Did anyone notice how gray Senator Obama’s hair is getting. It was especially noticable in HD. I think this campaign has aged him–even with the vacation in Hawaii. Or did he just stop using the dye while on vacation? Hmm.

Posted by: tinkergirl | August 17, 2008, 10:57 pm 10:57 pm

and how does all this conspiracy talk explain obamas dismal, timid performance?
and would not the same logic apply to the fact that during the hillary/obama debates she always had to answer first? so does that mean that obama cheated at all the debates with hillary because he heard the questions before he had to answer? also if mccain is an senile as some of you rant about he would not have remembered the questions anyway…lol!

But seriously folks. Do you think Obama’s people think the gray will give him more gravitas or are they off their game due to the vacation?

Posted by: tinkergirl | August 17, 2008, 11:16 pm 11:16 pm

It’s kind of amazing, reading the posts saying Obama can’t speak without a teleprompter, or that he was fumbling last night.
But what does one expect, from people who just follow what they’re told, and seem allergic to independent thought processes?
Obama actually listens to questions, and responds thoughtfully. In other words, he’s using his brain… something too many Americans seem to have forgotten how to do.
As for reports that McCain wasn’t in the building, was no surprise to me. I actually expected to see a *hump* on his back, like GW had during the debates in ’04. Laws/Rules are for the common folks, not for the GOP. I’m sure McCain wasn’t aware of the questions ;)
Can you imagine the Media uproar, if the situation was reversed, and Obama hadn’t been in the building? The Media would be blasting Obama, and these same McCain defenders would be lambasting Obama for cheating. But since it was McCain who failed to abide by the Rules, the story will pass.

Posted by: baz | August 17, 2008, 11:16 pm 11:16 pm

Mccain shone but face it and dont try to believe that he never heard the questions before hand. He did. No one is doubting that but Obama answers though he was also good was lame in some questions such as abortion. All the same kudos to Mccain, I would have cheated myself if I had the chance but for him to remember his answers is a plus. But did we learn of his faith? NO but he definitely won hearts with those stories. A clever way of dodging his answers but winning the forum and he sure did.

Posted by: jayjay | August 17, 2008, 11:59 pm 11:59 pm

I guess some people are stuck only on ABC. Rick Warren was on C.N.N himself and admitted it. He will be in again tomorrow, so you can hear him again. HE admitted that Mccain came in 35 minutes into the forum and that there was no coin toss. The only question, people are waiting to ask him tomorrow is why did he say a coin was tossed when Mccain was not even in the building?

Posted by: jayjay | August 18, 2008, 12:03 am 12:03 am

You must have missed the part tonight then when Warren said both candidates had some knowledge of themes that would be asked. I think they both knew without anyone telling them that abortion, gay rights and something on faith would be asked and given some of the comments from Warren this week about Edwards then I would think McCain couldv’e thought that would come up potentially and he was prepared for such. Warren also mentioned the question he had asked Obama about orphans and if you recall Obama responded in a manner that indicated he had given some prior thought to the issue and knew that would come up. Neither of these candidates knew the specific questions but clearly both had some prep prior based on Warren’s comments tonight.

Posted by: alpaig52 | August 18, 2008, 12:25 am 12:25 am

Dont try to spin it He said that they both had knowledge of the first two questions but not all the others. Then why did Mccain deliberately come in late into the forum? Why did Rick say mccain was already in a cone of silence. When was the coin tossed? I knew that John Lewis answer was just untrue but then Obama knew about it and his first answer was Michelle. Good but that answer should have come last.

Posted by: jayjay | August 18, 2008, 12:34 am 12:34 am

Some people in America appreciate a thoughtful person who understands complexities and considers all options before making important decisions…and others prefer blowhards that make everything simple and black-and-white and make up their mind before knowing all the facts.
That’s why some people prefer Obama…and others prefer George W Bush and John W McCain.
Simple as that.

Posted by: wilder5121 | August 18, 2008, 12:38 am 12:38 am

I’m pro-choice and have worked in women’s health care/ reproductive rights for slightly over ten years when I was younger. I have little problem with the responses either of these candidates gave when the question was posed about when life begins. The answer to that question is complex in particular with those who are pro-choice. Obama weaseled out of answering too some degree but my feeling is that his response wouldv’e probably been more complicated and taken more time then anyone wanted to hear and the response could have been one that could seem at odds with his position on reproductive rights. McCain quickly said life begins at conception and I know from experience that many who have abortions share that same belief and so that response does not necessarily mean one is anti-choice.
McCain stated he would have a pro-life administration and yet supports stem cell research and slid around that issue in pointing out that in the future the issues around stem cell research may be moot. That still doesn’t explain how he could be anti-choice and yet pro stem cell research.

Posted by: alpaig52 | August 18, 2008, 12:38 am 12:38 am

Debra, you seem to be missing the point. Obama was GOOD but Mccain surpised everyone. He was darn too good. Everyone had to wonder if he knew the questions before hand. People have known Mccain for a long, long time and he has been in a lot of debates. Those answers were far too good that some people suspected something and here today we finally got our answer. Rick will be in C.N.N tomorrow. We all need to ask him when did he toss the coin? And why did he tell the audience that Mccain was in a cone of silence?

Posted by: jayjay | August 18, 2008, 12:42 am 12:42 am

Obama vacation
R&R was Reconditioning and Reprograming
Obama always was in Attack mode, from the first day of his campaign.
He was the most evil agressive attacking his opponents merciless constanly.

And so now we find that McCain was not in the “cone of silence” Yet when asked about it by Warren he said he was trying to listen through the walls. No he is upset when he is questioned about it, brings up his war hero status and how dare anyone question him.
If he is so honorable why did he lie about being in the cone of silience?

Alpaig, agree with you Obama admitting that life starts at conception would never have hurt him instead his answers confused everyone, he needs to speak in a language that is easily understood by everyone. Saying that was beyond his pay grade was too lame, people will never know that all he was saying is that the answer was for only God to decide. Come out with clear-cut languages.

Posted by: jayjay | August 18, 2008, 12:49 am 12:49 am

I for one admire Obama’s deep intelligence and thoughtful answers, but unfortunately…after twenty years of Rush Limbaugh and eight years of George W Bush (aka “The Dumbing-Down of America”)…many Americans just can’t follow intelligent discourse anymore.
If I could recommend one thing to Obama…to cater to these people he simply needs to place his final answer FIRST…then go on to explain its complexities. Not the other way around, like he tends to do. His mistake is that he assumes that Americans are smarter than they are.
An easy fix for him. Then EVERYONE will “get it”.

Posted by: wilder5121 | August 18, 2008, 1:05 am 1:05 am

Who really cares whether anyone was in the cone of silence or not. Warren said both of these candidates knew the themes of the questions but not the specific questions. McCain basically pulled out responses from his stump speeches or responses he’s given to the press recently so did he really need to take that much time to say that stuff?
McCain was talking to the audience and us while Obama was having a conversation with Warren. I think both of these two did well and probably achieved what they had hoped to. I doubt Obama had any high expectations of pulling much of this audience into his camp and McCain was clearly pandering to this group and showing them he was their guy. I think it was clear though, regardless of whether McCain was in a cone of silence or not, that he was at an advantage with this group. We need to wait for the debates when they are on stage together and talking to a general audience. It was clear though that Obama is not going to have the cakewalk people thought he would though coming up against the more experienced McCain. I have to say though that Clinton wouldv’e been the one who couldv’e made mincemeat out of McCain in a debate. Clinton is a straight down the line liberal who doesn’t feel the need to find common ground or compromise with the far right and who prides herself on being able to deal with the far right and she was a far better debator then Obama regardless of who one liked better then the other. The best thing that happened to Obama was having to come up against Clinton once she got back in the game.

Posted by: alpaig52 | August 18, 2008, 1:21 am 1:21 am

alpaig52…you’re dead on. Hillary could cut up both these two, she’s so damn smart and direct. I get her and miss her in this campaign. She would so have held her ownn with McCain. But, I’m now in McCain camp and will work fervently to get him elected. Maybe Hillary in 2012. Obama’s unacceptable for me and I will tune out turn off and disconnect if he is awarded the highest office in our country.

People need to get a grip regarding McCain’s answers to his questions. They would have been the same no matter what. He knows who he is and what he stands for and goes out everyday to talk to the American people…..HIS ANSWERS WOULD BE THE SAME WHETHER HE KNEW WHAT WOULD BE ASKED OR NOT. He actually made a coulple of quips he said he knew he might be problematic, so people really need to get a grip here and refocus again on Edwards love child….that’s way more important.

I too have a hard time understand why Obama supporters are seemingly so angry he’s in the lead right? he’s hauling in more money than McCain right? they don’t need Hillary supporters to win right? It will be a landslide right? So where is the anger coming from and why does Obama inspire these type of supporters? I mean I understand my fellow Hillary supporters anger she lost and the Mccain supporters are tired of beign called evil and stupid for supporting an old senile fool right? But Obama supporters get the coverage everyone excited about him right? You don’t need the other half of you democratic base so stop the hate nothing to fear but fear it’s self right?

Rachael….great post at 8:42 I smell fear, which has turned into anger with the Teflon one’s supporters.

It’s about time, Obama. The McCain slime machine has been running full bore for weeks and you’ve done little to fight back. You promised us during the primary when you were going easy on Hillary that you wouldn’t show the same amount of restraint should you get the opportunity to fight McCain. So what gives? When are you going to take the gloves off??? Don’t you let this slip away from us! This country CANNOT endure another 4 more years of these lying, corrupt, incompetent and immoral hacks in charge!!

Ha Ha Ha! This headline is a joke, right!
Ready to Rumble!
Obama is more like a decrepid, broken
down train moving slowly down the tracks!
He has nerve talking about telling
the American People the truth about the changes he wants to bring to this country!
Does this guy even know what the
truth is?
On just about every issue he shifts,
refines, or nuances his positions(also known as flip-flopping)!
He has No Plan to deal with the current
energy crisis!
His response to the Russian aggression against Georgia was timid and naive!
His economic policies will bankrupt our treasury and our people!
Just Say No to Obama! No You Can’t!

Barry’s ready to mumble a bunch of gibberish.
Hill Yeah! Take it Back!

I want to see Obama get tough and fight back against the McBush camp. When Biden is named as VP it will be gloves off. Joe will have No problem beating McBush to a bloody pulp. Obama/Biden is the perfect tag team, Obama can keep talking about policy and leave the boxing to Joe.

I understand that the media is democrat and they going to do everything for the democrats to win, apart of the mega-money campaing that the democrats are doing and I am wandering from where this money cam from.
I really don’t care if obama bin laden is the typical exteriotype of mud idol.
I really think in any case that maccain win the game of life already. He is a winner from long time before that’s it.
