Obama Uses “He” Pronoun When Discussing His VP

RALEIGH, NC — Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is almost always diligent about saying "he or she" when discussing his potential running mate.

But at a lively town hall meeting in the Tarheel State Tuesday evening, the senator — who is expected to announce his vice presidential pick at the end of this week — used a decidedly male pronoun.

Asked what his plan is to utilize his vice president as President Bush utilized his, Obama said, "Let me tell you first what I won’t do. I won’t hand over my energy policy to my vice president, without knowing necessarily what he’s doing."

What HE’S doing. Could be a reference to Vice President Dick Cheney — to whom Obama is clearly alluding.

But, as I said, Obama is usually pretty careful about saying "he or she." And surely it hasn’t escaped anyone’s noticed that despite references to dark horse candidates such as Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, or Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, all three finalists — Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Joe Biden of Delaware, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine — are male.

"My vice president also will be a member of the executive branch," Obama continued, "he won’t be one of these fourth branches of government where he thinks he’s above the law."

He gave other criteria which were gender-neutral.

But for those political junkies out there looking for clues — it’s quite possible Obama just dropped one.

Obama is merely trying to change the subject from his Saturday night massacre.

Sebelius from Kansas would be a great pick as she is a drama free adult who is actually qualified for the job through her holding of the executive spot in the Kansas government. All but Kane are weak in comparison.

Oh please pick Sebelius. The earthquake you hear would be 1o million Clinton supporters rushing to McCain’s side

Posted by: geevill | August 19, 2008, 8:30 pm 8:30 pm

I hope and pray he doesn’t pick Hillary. She is too important for 2012 to go down in flames with this phony. He will probably pick Biden, but it won’t matter. Obama was never strong enough to choose Hillary, who is better than him in every way as a potential President.

Anyone but Hillary!

After Obama’s poor performance on saturday night I’m not sure what difference the VP candidate will make. His performance will be picked apart for months and will be seen as a major turning point in the election.

There is some humor in the creepy Clinton camp not wanting Sebelius because Sebelius is a woman. That is called sexism. It owuld fit with the racism that creepy Bill talked about.
I think we have to move past these things and just pick well qualified people rather than some broken stereotype.

So, what? Doesn’t a nominee have the right to choose whoever he or she wants as VP? Aren’t democrats for “right to choose”? Or it doesn’t apply to Obama.

carl29, an even amount of tickets were given to each campaign. How was the audience biased?

Posted by: Kathy | August 19, 2008, 8:43 pm 8:43 pm

In 2012 we will be waiting for Hillary, to put her out again. There are plenty of anti-Hillary voters who now know the way to defeat her. Don’t worry, everytime she runs, the anti-Hillary candidate will be there, with tons of money from Hillary-heaters. I think that the next strong candidate to run against Hillary in 2012 will be Mark Warner, a white, southerern!!!!
No Hillary, No Problem!!!!!

for goodness sakes, the media is just all silly and giddy who Obama will take to the prom, aren’t they? Aren’t you just soooooooo excited that you just want to scream? And what will Paris Hilton be wearing tomorrow?
meanwhile, the economy stinks, nations are at war, and we have our futures to worry about.
President McCain….maverick, hero, patriot.

The tickets were not given away. Who told you so? Didn’t you know that people had to buy the tickets, starting at $500.
“With prices for tickets ranging from $500 to $2,000, the church could take in between $2.5 million and $10 million, based on 5,000 tickets being available.”
“Orange County Democratic Party Chairman Frank Barbaro said he is concerned that charging for tickets – with tickets costing up to $2,000 – will shut out many Obama supporters from the event.”
“Orange County Republican Party Chairman Scott Baugh said has no problem with the way Warren is handling the forum.”

The dem party is a mess under the “leadership” of Pelosi and Dean. The Clinton people are going to keep Obama from being elected and the Obama people want to keep Clinton off the ticket as VP in 08 and Pres in 12. Wow what a great job Pelosi and Dean are doing. Do I hear pay raise?

Posted by: Kathy | August 19, 2008, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

Obama is 47 years of age, he can run for the next 4 elections if it pleases him. However, since Hillary is not a “little girl” she doesn’t have that many runs. 2012 is her last chance, and believe there will be plenty of people to push the candidate to defeat her. Don’t count on racist voters next time around.

The first time I heard about the tickets was on CNN the afternoon leading to the forum. They said it, and then I looked it up on the internet.

And Rick Warren has really proven himself to be trustworthy in all aspects don’t ya think?
Must of us with any brains knew what to expect to begin with. Gotta admire obama for having nuts….despite what some of you may think…
Lowers expectations for the real debates too….when Mccain can’t get away with some of his bs hopefully.

geevil, I think Jack Cafferty summed it up well, “One after another, McCain’s answers were shallow, simplistic, and trite. He showed the same intellectual curiosity that George Bush has — virtually none”.

The propigandist carl29 said
“Orange County Democratic Party Chairman Frank Barbaro said he is concerned that charging for tickets – with tickets costing up to $2,000 – will shut out many Obama supporters from the event.”
The VERY NEXT DAY
Barack Obama raked $7.8 million Sunday at three separate fundraisers in San Francisco, telling a VIP dinner crowd — many of whom paid $28,500 to attend — that he would win the presidency in November but to expect a tough battle with Republicans in the meantime.
“John McCain, all he wants to do is talk about me,” Obama told supporters. “They know they can’t win on the issues. So what they’ll do is they’ll try to scare people:’He’s risky. He’s risky. We’re not sure.’”
Obama was introduced at the dinner by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who called him “a leader God has blessed us with at this time.”

Posted by: leafletsrus | August 19, 2008, 9:06 pm 9:06 pm

I am so upset I can’t think Obama anymore! I am a Democrat and have been a registered Democrat for the last 39 years. In that time, I have never been faced with a decision like I am now. I have never voted other than Democrat, no matter what I thought of the person. The Democratic National Committee denied my vote in the Primaries. Is that not a violation of my Constitutional rights? Apparently not because the DMC paid a Republican Federal Judge to vote in favor of denying Florida and Michigan primary votes as valid – just like Bush did to get elected. (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) Senator Obama addressed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and told them – POINT BLANK – that HE WOULD BE THEIR PRESIDENT. (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) The NAACP is the same organization that screams racial prejudice if a person of dark skin is called “colored.” I have not heard or read that Obama would be everyone’s president. Obama goes to Europe and the Middle East while the country is suffering from extremely high energy costs and countless thousands of homeowners are facing foreclosure to make friends and show he “knows about foreign policy.” (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) The latest figures show that 1 in every 450 households face foreclosure, but this man can’t go to Washington and do his job as a Senator (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) The latest appeal to America is to give one billion dollars to Georgia to rebuild after the Russian invasion. Why not spend one billion dollars to rebuild the America that George Bush has destroyed? (WILL AMERICA REMAIN SILENT?) The Democratic Congress after two years in power has served no purpose to assist Americans. Nancy Pelosi and every Democratic Congressperson have failed constituents as well as the American people. The promises made were never fulfilled. The excuses — The Republican MINORITY had better lobbyists – (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) If they had gone to bat for America, they would have passed laws to force the banks to take two steps backwards and accept the initial interest rates these people were offered in their subprime mortgages and made attempts to work with them. No – instead, they bowed to the Republicans who own the banks and did nothing and voted to bail out failing banks who screwed millions of Americans (THE NATION REMAINED SILENT.) Now, after cutting a deal with the Clinton coalition, all delegates will be seated. (THE NATION REMAINS SILENT). Howard Dean is a traitor to the Democratic Party. It is apparent that he is on the Republican payroll. I am but one voice and I can be silent no more – I hope American Democrats can no longer sit here and be oblivious to what is happening. Obama is not a Muslim. He is not a foreign-born alien. He is the toy-boy of the Republican Party. He is doing everything to ensure that McCain gets in the White House. I ask every Obama supporter to reconsider and when the Democratic National Convention convenes, give your support to another Democrat – You make the choice. I am writing in Senator Hillary Clinton. I fully believe that she is the only candidate that can take this nation forward and undo everything that George Bush has done to make this country a laughing stock to the rest of the world. I don’t think she would spend a billion dollars elsewhere before putting it to good use in our own country. Obama uses “He” to describe his running mate – Not sure he knows the proper English term – we never use gender-specific terms anymore – at least those of us who are properly educated.

Newsweek writes a interesting piece addressing the many negative and false claims in this campaign in particular those coming directly from McCain. The article concludes with this advice for McCain…”But when he (McCain) resorts to these kinds of falsehoods, and casts such aspersions on his opponent’s patriotism, John McCain is no longer putting his country first. If he were, he would recognize that the interests of the nation require a relatively truthful campaign. To fulfill his image of himself, McCain should stop lying about his opponent. For a man with his claims to honor and integrity, that’s not too much to ask.”

Bad News for Obama if he used the word he. I will guarantee that he will lose the election in November due lack of reality thinking. The only way he can win is to name Hillary who has just about as many supporters as he does. I will again repeat that he will lose alot of votes and right now as tight as the election is he might as well say goodbye to the presidency.

These leftover Clinton supporters can all go to McCain. Obama doesn’t want them or need them. They will not blackmail Obama into picking any person or position. Unlike Clinton, Obama has principles and a conscience and he will stick with what he believes in before he caves to political extortion. He will make up for the votes of Clinton sore losers by newly registered voters who see both Clintons and McCain as the stinking pieces of politician trash that they all are.

I personally don’t give a damn about either of these candidates. I think that this is the umpteenth election where we have been presented with two horrid candidates and no excellent leaders. America is failing miserably… at practically everything. Special interests, lobbyists, and big businesses run the government and it seems that we’ve reached the pinnacle of corruption. There’s no turning back- the only viable option for me is possibly learning another language, adapting to the culture of another country, and getting as far away from this hellhole as possible. Call it treason, call it unpatriotic- I really don’t care. I have my whole life ahead of me and I’m not going to pledge my allegiance to this country- there’s not one thing “united” or “free” about it.

Obama and McCain are in a virtual tie in the polls going into convention week. Why isn’t Obama leading? He should have a double digit lead over McCain just like congressional democrats have over republicans. Don’t tell me it has to do with cel phones etc, NPR did it’s own survey on this and showed it made little to no difference in polls. The fact is Hillary got the popular vote and a lot of people just don’t want him. When this started Pelosi, Dean, Kennedy and the gang thought Obama would get the popular vote and not the delegates and carried on about the will of the voters should prevail, you cannot over turn the vote and we need to follow their lead. Fast forward to June and we have the opposite scenario and the flip flopping begins. No one was interested in the will of the voters at all. This is why so many Hillary supporters don’t want to vote for Obama myself included.

The English language has changed to be more “politically correct”. At one time in our not too distant past is was perfectly acceptable to use the masculine reference when gender is unknown or irrelevant. It still should be. Not an insult it’s just easier to say or write “he” than to say or write “he or she”. …. Having said that, while I don’t agree with 99% of what Obama says I don’t think he’s foolish enough to name Hillary Clinton as a running mate. Obama is aware of the blood trail behind the Clinton rise to power. Naming Hillary as a VP would be suicidal and Obama knows it.

As a Hillary supporter, I would careless who Obama picks for VP, because; I will never vote for him. I think Obama should pick the person that will best fit his and his supporters’ needs.

Don, I will say this….. I’m pretty grateful for President Bush for sending us to war, because I’m 100% VA connected and I make 4grand a month to school…But YES ! I do trust Obama.. WHY?? This guy quotes JFK !!! “Never Fear To Negotiate, But Never Negotiate Out Of Fear” THAT IS BEING PROVEN WITH RUSSIA !!!! The U.S. Won’t Dare Touch Russia… WHY?!? CUS THEY WILL GET THEIR BUTTS KICKED !! But I guarantee if that was Iran-Israel, we’d be there already… USE YOUR HEAD… WAR ISN’T THE KEY… NEGOTIATION !!!

g-man…you are confusing the wars. the firsy one in 1991 was to assist Kuwait to get Iraqi invaders out of their country. Cheney was Defense Secretary at that time and begged daddy Bush to march on Baghdad. Bush said that we would honor our commitment to Kuwait and go no further. Unlike his son, the Cheney puppet, he was an honorable man. This new war with Iraq was based on a lie – many lies, to be exact. Pay attention in history class, man

UCF … JFK was a man, not a god. He was not a great president. I was 12 when he was elected and I adored the man. I still do, but truth is truth – he was not a great president. Obama is not and never will be JFK and his wife can dream all she wants, but camelot is gone forever and she will never recreate it. I use the VA, too because I can’t afford health insurance. Bush invaded a country with no authority and with no credible reason. How many of your fellow solders are dead becasue of that? Yet, you are happy – happy because you go to school for free? Hillary voted for the bill, too. You vote for a man because he gave you a free education? I worked 2 jobs and carried a full-time load of classes. I guess that is the difference between us – I know what it means to work for something – I ask for nothing free. -and nothing is for free if you look at the whole picture

Obama for President!

Posted by: Lies_from_the_Right | August 19, 2008, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

I give credit to Jake Tapper for picking a nice topic, but Obama is a precise thinker and speaker, so when he said, “I won’t hand over my energy policy to my vice president, without knowing necessarily what he’s doing,” Obama was referring to Cheney, a male.
However, it was really a mistake for Obama to take a vacation at such a critical time recently, and thereby plummer from a small lead to a tie in the polls. Clearly, Obama needs some more political acumen right now on his side, namely the Clintons, if he wants to win this thing.
Remember, Obama never has won a contested election, and this one coming up will be contested. Clinton will help him more than Biden, not just politically, but strategicly.

HRC supporters (Republicans anyway) stating you’ll vote for McCain – please go ahead. Your threats, posturing and inability to get past your emotional baggage over your candidate not getting nominated is an embarrassment to smart women with a grasp of policies and issues at stake this election. Obama is leading over 20% with the women’s vote and once women become educated about McCain’s past voting record as well as current beliefs on women’s rights then you can know pulling the lever for McCain is a betrayal to being a woman. If that doesn’t bother you – vote McCain.

McCain just overtook Obama this week in RealPolitics’ electoral college polls. If Obama picks some run of the mill guy like Biden or Bayh or the lightweights Kaine or Sibelius, it won’t help him much. He ought to pick a fire eater like McCaskill, or even Clinton. Come on Obama, give us some chance to win!

Please dont dismiss Clinton supporters. Personally, I voted for Edwards because of the economy. Clinton represented the center position, and Obama the right. (shows how narrow our political spectrum is). Yes, Obama was right on the war and everyone else was tainted by it. Clinton did bring the best health care plan (even though the American people overwhelmingly want national health care, her plan was better than nothing). She brings alot to the election.
It is worthy of note, (although the sock puppets here will never mention it) real Hillary supporters represented half of the platform committee, and worked really well with the Obama folks in putting it together. There is alot of unity now between the campaigns, and the convention is going to highlight that.

How can intelligent and responsible people fall for this mass hysteria over a politician whose only real accomplishment in 47 years of living has been to build up the mass hysteria and messianic expectations surrounding this campaign? As with other moments of religious and quasi-religious frenzy, it’s not what the candidate is saying, or the proposals (what proposals, exactly?) he’s making, or even Obama himself that creates the manic energy surrounding his campaign. It’s the phenomenon itself, the milking of a desire for an amorphous and undefined “change”, the crazed delirium of the Oba-maniacs, that compels attention, similar to a cult. I find Obama to be a virtually empty shell of a candidate–huge on rhetoric but without much substance–and a history that supports that conclusion. A disastrous choice for the Democratic Party. My prediction is that his emptiness will become more and more apparent as the campaign heats up.

McCain, the federalist, will be satisfied with states having the ability to vary the maximum weeks for abortion freedom down from 26. Most states likely would pick 13 or 16 or 20, and then this issue would not hold us hostage any more. The possibility of getting the abortion issue behind us politically is one good reason for Hillary supporters to stay home. Obama supporters do not want to understand where we are coming from., and would rather proclaim we are McCain spies, rather than recognize they themselves are close minded.

This election is not about change. It is about who can best help our country and the world. McCain would keep running up the debt, and fight as many wars as possible, which could get dangerous. Obama would do what again to help us and the world?

I can understand people find qualities they like in a candidate and vote for he or she. What I don’t understand is women who vote for the rights of the womb over substance. Women are afforded many types of birth control. We even have the morning after pill. When the desire to kill over-rides a mothers natural instinct to protect the unborn, I can understand why Obama is your choice candidate.
I will be voting for Senator McCain regardless of his VP choice. 100 % pro-life voting record!

Debbie-McCain voted to cover Viagra, but not cover birth control. Yes, its available, but thanks to McCain – often not affordable to many. Also, the abortion argument is absurd as the two sides are not even arguing the same thing. You can be pro-choice and anti-abortion. I won’t tell you what to do with your body and you don’t tell me what to do with mine.

You can vote 100% with Bush on those mundane legislations, but when it comes to liberty and things matter, it becomes a true test.
Zero-bama voted for Cheney’s energy bill that gives the big oil tax credits that you 0-bama boneheads decry about today. It is your Political Jesus who supported it, whereas HRC and McCain both voted against it.
Zero-bama first deceived you by promising you that he would vote against and filabuster if necessary Bush’s spying bill. Yet, after he knew he did not need your votes, he voted to take your liberty and Constitutional rights away, by giving Bush’s government the power to psy on you without warrant.
McCain and HRC voted against Bush’s spy bill.
Who has the right judgment? You decide, if you have any and are not blind.

everytime I turn around, Obama is shouting out how the American people are hurting and he, the “Messiah” is going to swoop down and “save” us, yet people can afford to pay $500-$2000 to see him at an event? What is wrong with this picture? America is actually the richest country in the world. The average dwelling of the American poor person has more square footage than the average overall residence in every European nation. We have more TV’s, cars and computers, yet we still find something to complain about. Obama is trying to guilt us into voting for him. What more can he do, really? We have a welfare system in place, unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, etc. The Republican party has not taken these away, but, if you listen to Obama, McCain will take away every social program and your first born child!

Posted by: S Adams | August 19, 2008, 11:13 pm 11:13 pm

I am a typical American who think through a situation before making a decision. McCain is the better man because he know how to pick a fight and start a war..and wars are good for the economy. All Obama talk about is strengthening the economy and world peace. Who needs world peace! Who needs a strong economy! Lets fight some wars and McCain is better than the O man. Lets show the world who is boss. Its all about Military power not economic power. McCain said the other day that he does not know much about the economy..why should he know! Like McCain I don’t care about the economy. Its about showing China,North Korea, Iran and the others whose the real boss. McCain is a strong leader because he was a war man..Obama do not know any thing about wars..So when McCain gets in there he will start a war because he knows that we smart/wise Americans would not change the Government while in the midst of a war=two terms for the Macman. See how he cares about the country? There you go! That is why I am voting for McCain. Some of you readers are probably saying that I am stupid..know what! you are right but I am voting with the majority of Americans who are stupid and we are voting for McCain because its all about war and strong military..The military talk wins all the time with most American voters and as a result McCain will win in November. Oh! how smart we Americans are! Now can someone please hand me my glass of spiked koolaid? Thank you very much! Now you can go and vote for Obama. You loser!

If Obama WERE choosing Hillary, I doubt he would be lame minded enough to refer to the VP as HER anyway.
Seeing as how they plan to generate enormous media buzz (for example, this silly article)and hence free coverage on Saturday by keeping it secret and the guy says she? Even if it is Hillary on the ticket, Obama would never be so stupid.
This article is stupid.

Obama being secretive is par for the course. Obama is so secretive about so many things one wonders what Obama is hiding?
A partial list of documents the Obama campaign has declined to make available: Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Harvard University records, medical records, Illinois State Senate records, certified copy of birth certificate, Selective Service registration, law practice client list, undergraduate thesis, SAT and LSAT scores, law school application. Yeah, they’re a veritable font of information and a model of transparency. What the heck are they hiding?
The most recent group of documents that are being withheld from the public are records related to Obama’s work on the Annenberg Challenge, a non profit group linked to William Ayers, an unrepentant domestic terrorist. Per The San Francisco Chronicle:
“The University of Illinois on Tuesday refused to release records relating to Barack Obama’s service to a nonprofit group linked to former 1960s radical activist William Ayers.
The university’s Chicago campus said the donor of the records that document the work of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge has not yet turned over ownership rights to the material.”
First off, I did not know that there was an “owner” of a non profits documents. The documents by law should be available to the public. So what is the University of Illinois trying to hide and does it have any thing to do with the fact Ayers is one of their professors? Just hope no one is in the process of destroying the documents.

Where is the “certified copy of birth certificate” for Obama? This is a constitutional requirement.

Obama voted against a bill in Illinois that would save the life of a baby born alive after an abortion than lied about why he voted against the bill. Obama said the reason he voted against the bill was because it did not contain the wording necessary to protect Roe vs Wade. Fact is the aforementioned wording was in the bill and Obama still voted against the bill. I do not think Jesus would vote for a guy who would vote against a bill that would save the life of a baby. Once I found out about this I do not understand how anyone who claims to be a Christian could ever vote for Obama.

Obama has no military experience so bringing up McCain’s military experience only highlights this fact. As to Obama’s experience:
As a community organizer, the only project Obama could possibly take any credit for are decaying slums.
As the politically-elected editor of the Harvard Law Review, Obama did not write a single article.
As a University of Chicago law professor, Obama did not author a single scholarly article.
Obama refuses to make public the details of the legal work for which he billed at the law firm that represented Tony Rezko.
As an Illinois State Senator, all Obama did was vote “present,” and the bills he claims to have passed were given to him by Chicago political fixer Emil Jones.
Oh I forgot, Obama also voted against a bill that would save the life of a baby born alive after an abortion.
As a freshman United States Senator, Obama was in the Senate for a total of 141 days and never even convened a meeting of the Subcommittee he was assigned to Chair.
Obama is unfit to be President.

The Democratic party will continue to suffer, decade after decade, until each state can pick its maximum number of pregnancy weeks for abortion rights. I believe the supreme court would honor a congressional law, signed by the president, allowing state lattitude in this way.

Some people might even say you are a propaganda tool of the Russians. However since you seem to think so poorly of America, just like Obama and his wife seems to think, I am sure you could go live in Russia and live there very happily.

McCain voted for the continuation of the torture in Guantanamo. I do not think anyone there had a nuke. So if you support McCain, you support torture of people who do not seriously threaten the U.S. Therefore, you yourself are a torture enabler. How proud you must be. McCain’s new slogan: “Torture First.”

Posted by: sherry | August 20, 2008, 12:25 am 12:25 am

Churchill,
Here is your answer:
Obama is for the redistribution of wealth via higher taxes because he thinks that is the “fair” thing to do, not because it will raise revenue.
Obama wants to spend a trillion dollars on government welfare programs that will force people to do what he tells them to do before they see a penny of the money Obama has confiscated from the private sector.
The wealth redistribution plan that takes money from the private sector will destroy the private sector economy and make one of the most economically rich nations in the history of the world into a third world Nation.
Obama is against drilling for our own oil here, against building new refineries, against nuclear power plants In Obama/s own words “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.
“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.
Obama will weaken our military in very dangerous times, Obama: “First, I’m the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president, I will end it.
Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems…and I will institute an independent Defense Priorities Board to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal I will not develop new nuclear weapons…I will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material…and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off of hair-trigger alert…and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.”
Obama has no experience that would qualify him to be President
Obama’s long time friends and associates include crooks, unrepentant domestic terrorists and anti-Americans. In fact, I doubt Obama could pass a security review if he wanted to be a member of the FBI or other government agency.
The above is just a partial list of very real concerns with an Obama Pesidency. What is amazing to me is that anyone with any common sense would even think of voting for Obama.

Posted by: harry | August 20, 2008, 12:25 am 12:25 am

Harry…you said it….what boggles my mind is how could anyone have got this far along, as Obama has. If he were white, with all the same background would he be where he is today? Serious question…someone give me an answer.

Posted by: Debra | August 20, 2008, 12:31 am 12:31 am

Sherry,
The people in Guantanamo are not being “tortured”. What I would ask you, is if your child’s life was at sake and the only way to get the information necessary to save your child’s life was via the interrogation methods used at Gitmo, what would you do? I suppose in your case you would let your child die so you could feel morally superior.

Posted by: mary | August 20, 2008, 12:37 am 12:37 am

McCain cheated on his first wife and left her and the kids for a woman 25 years younger than him, he makes me sick.

Posted by: Kathy | August 20, 2008, 12:41 am 12:41 am

Regarding, “In fact, I doubt Obama could pass a security review if he wanted to be a member of the FBI or other government agency,” we do not really know enough to make that conclusion. But we do know McCain is immoral because he wants to continue to torture people in Guantanamo. While McCain is out there defeating evil and starting wars, it might not always be best for our country in the long run. I think maybe we should go a different direction for a while, although I share the concern that Obama is a little weak on defense. The biggest concern is that he might overreact to something due to political concerns. But Obama is pretty smart, and I think in the end he will keep us safer than the “war is all I know” guy (McCain).

Posted by: sherry | August 20, 2008, 12:44 am 12:44 am

In case you forgot, Al Qaeda murdered over 3000 people on 9/11 and have vowed to kill millions more if they get half a chance. Give President Bush a little credit for the fact that the US has not had another 9/11 and maybe the interrogation techniques used had gitmo may have had something to do with that fact. Just don’t take the fact the US has not had a another 9/11 for granted. If Obama gets elected and implements the much looser security policies Obam is talking about there could wery well be another 9/11. Oh well, another 9/11 but all you Obama supporters can feel oh so much more morally superior I guess.

Posted by: mary | August 20, 2008, 1:09 am 1:09 am

Hey Jim:
Your choice for president finished near the bottom of his class. He wrecked many planes and got captured. Most of his military experience was spent as a POW. We salute his efforts but once he was in the Senate, he voted 99% Bush on policies when he was at the meetings, which was sparingly to say the least. He deserted his ailing wife and children without looking back. He was caught up in th Keating Five Scandal and got off with a slap on the wrist, even though he was guilty as sin. (Cindy’s money helped). And if you were to put McCain in school for next forty years, he would not gain the intellect and fortitude that Senator Obama has. Senator Obama is methodical thinker and make decisons based on the facts about a situation and McCain is a warmonger who says attack first and then find out what is really going on in any given situation later.McCain is a loser and a liar and has always felt that he had something to prove to his father and grandfather who were Admirals. In that vein, McCain cannot wait to get into Presidential seat so that he can start more wars, allow more American soldiers to be killed so that he can thumb his nose at his father and grandfather, as if to say I made it. I am the POTUS so I did better than you guys did. Even though they propped him up for years and quietly kicked doors open for him that people with his I.Q. would never been abe to get through. And at the same time, Cindy’s money and political contacts helped to boost him up the political ladder that would would have otherwise been out of his reach. He has no more experience in running this country than Senator Obama. He does have the experience in losing planes and finally getting shot down and being a POW. These are not the qualifications that make for a qualified President. Although Barack Obama has not personally been in the military, he is far more versed and knowlegable about the situations in foreign policy, the economy and health care etc. Senator Obama has leadership qualities and the intellect to help pull this country out of the mess that Bush and the likes of McCain has put this country in for the last 8 years. He also has the intelligence to consult with experts on situations and McCain does not listen to his advisers. I cannot believe that any sane adult who has had to live with yhe mess the Republicans put this country, could even entertain the thought of another 4-8 years of this madness. You think Bush trashed this country, just wait and see if McCain gets in, we will be in so many wars our country will look much like Iraq and the other was torn countries. So, say goodbye to everything you have taken for granted for so long, such as freedom, the America Dream and a healthy future and economy for our future generation.

Posted by: gman | August 20, 2008, 1:37 am 1:37 am

I didn’t realize the blog on ABC’s website bled so red. What is wrong with you people?
Do you not realize the past 8 years have been hell for us Americans. Our gas is higher than ever, innocent people are dying in Iraq — a war of lies, the federal budget deficit is greater then it ever has been, our health crisis is absurd, the taxes levied to the rich are unfair compared to the rate of the poor, the unemployment rate is sky high, and the housing crisis has struck nationwide. Explain to me: where do you get off putting down Senator Obama — a man who wants to try something new to revive the country. Where do you get off supporting McCain, who has sided with GW Bush on nearly ever governmental failure in the past 8 years.
For the sanctity of this nation and for the future of our children, we need Barack Obama as our president.
Obama ’08.

“Give President Bush a little credit for the fact that the US has not had another 9/11 and maybe the interrogation techniques used had gitmo may have had something to do with that fact.”
________________________________________
Another 9/11? Exactly how many attacks were perpetrated on US soil (continental US that is) before 9/11? Yup you got it 1 and only 1 (unless you want to include Pearl Harbor). So in 232 years there have been 2 or possibly 3 attacks on the US by terrorists but Republicans want you to believe that we live in Israel and they are going to happen weekly.
I’ll give Bush credit for vacationing and dismissing the intelligence which if acted on may have stopped the attacks. Bush gets credit for doing little aside from killing soldiers for oil and permitting Osama Bin LAden to run free because if captured he would have no excuse to run roughshot over the world…………. one has to be ither blind or just plain ignorant not to see it.
Now we have McCain saying he won’t sleep until he captures Osama Bin Laden? Where have you been the past 7 years McCain? Now that you’re running for President and it makes a good soundbite you care about Bin Laden? You’ve done and said nothing to make that a reality yet we’re suppossed to trust your record and experience? The only experience I see is a record of caring more about iraqi oil than American soldiers or Osama Bin Laden. Who does this man think he’s kidding?……… aside from the mindless uneducated religious righties?

And due to the sneaky, snide, off-handed remarks she and Bill have been making about Barack since Hillary lost the primaries, I wouldn’t want a Clinton in my administration either. It’s bad enough that the Clintons have weaseled their way into the convention like it’s “all about them.” Hillary will never get my vote if she ever attempts another run for the whitehouse. NEVER.

How anyone can talk about voting for McCain is beyond me. A man that leaves his wife and two kids for another woman is definitely not qualified to lead. How can anyone vote for someone that voted against a holiday for a man that gave his life trying to get basic civil rights for others. If McCain becomes president we are in for a longer four years than the eight we’re already in.

I think Hillary dumped Obama, not the other way around, because she wants to campaign in 2012. Kathleen Sebelius? I dunno. She might like her current job as is. That leaves the guys. In that case, I’m more interested in who McCain picks as a running mate, given that I don’t know very much about the three men on Obama’s alleged short list.

I’m sick of the whole thing. Am beginning to feel “used” by the Obama campaign. This is dragging on and on and one begins to feel less enthused and more angry about the way they are going to email you the vp choice….just to get more names and more money. I feel duped and disgusted!
He needs to pick Hillary, he’s down in the polls, took a stupid vacation, stuttered his way through the conversation on Saturday night and will pprobably pick another light weight for his running mate. I WAS EXCITED about this guy and never really supported Hillary, but unfortunately, he needs her.
I’m bored and disgusted with the whole hiped up nonsense. It’s getting old.

JD: There were at least 2 terrorist attacks on US soil during Clinton. The World Trade Center bombing by radical Muslims. Everyone involved was rounded up and put in jail. Then there was the Oklahoma City bombing by a Republican. McVeigh and Nichols were arrested, but there never was any good investigation into how high their connections went. I’m not saying Gingrich or Cheney were involved, but I never heard them deny it or speak out against the attacks.
Since 9/11, there have been a few attacks. Nothing like 9/11, but there was the anthrax attacks, attacks on the green zone, and Bush will tell us every time an Iraqi shot a gun it was a terrorist attack on the US. So, it’s hardly accurate to say there have been no terrorist attacks since 9/11

McCain 08/Hillary 12…nice fantasy for the sore losers and bitter enders. If Hillary is perceived as having helped defeat a fellow Democratic, she won’t stand a chance in hell of being nominated in 2012. Speaking as a New Yorker, she might not even be able hold onto her Senate seat.

You do realize the state of NY is bigger than the city of NY dont you. Brooklyn is a very small part of a big state..

Anybody, but Hillary. Otherwise, she’ll see her entitlement to run the show and Bill Clinton by claiming experience will even attempt to get the chair back in the oval room. Enough with them or let grandpa McCane take over.

For those of you who choose to call Hillary supporters “sore-losers,” I think you had better take another gander at the polls. I think we were the ones who had it right in the first place; it is your guy BHO who cannot not even gain a solid double digit lead over a “fossil,” as someone so eloquently put it, in a year where the Democrats should be cleaning house. I think a lot of you are starting to realize that you supported the wrong guy but you are to tender hearted to admit it! Oh well, there’s always 2012 when a REAL Democrat will run for President and will win!
Hillary 2012

I’m not an Obama supporter, but I can readily admit that the Obama team has been very intelligent and has handled this race exceedingly well. It is with that thought in mind that I say that Biden is the logical choice for VP. He’s smart, he’s a straight-talker, he has foreign policy experience, and he can give Obama some credibility.
On the downside, he completely flies in the face of the items Obama’s been touting – he voted for the war and he is representative of a long political career. He also is clearly ego-centric, which Obama recently stated is something he’s not interested in.
I have to say that I was a Biden supporter before he dropped out of the primary, at which time I switched to Clinton’s side. Now I have no use for either of them, frankly. I’ve lost all respect for those who support a candidate for president who is completely unqualified and unable to lead our country. So to me, as a former Clinton supporter, it wouldn’t matter if he chose her or Biden or some shmuck he pulls off the street – I’m voting McCain.
