Obama’s Attacks Keep Getting Sharper
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., continued his sharper attacks on Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, NM.
"My opponent John McCain," he said as the crowd began to boo, "John McCain, you know, he has been talking about how he puts country first, but I have to say it is not an example of putting country first when you say that George Bush’s economic policies have shown great progress. He said that just a few months ago — that, you know, we made great economic progress under George Bush. Then he started running ads saying ‘oh, Obama just going to raise your taxes and he will lead to an economic disaster.’"
"Mr. McCain let me explain to you, the economic disaster is happening right now," Obama continued, "maybe you haven’t noticed!
"He has got his major economic advisor calling you whiners," Obama said, referring to former Sen. Phil Gramm. "He said, ‘oh, the American people are whining’ – one of McCain’s top advisors said, ‘a nation of whiners.’ ‘They have a mental depression. They are just imagining things are bad."
"This guy obviously does not pump his own gas. He obviously doesn’t do his own shopping. He (is) obviously not paying his own bills," Obama said.

Hmmmm, this from the elitist Obama, but, never mind, since I am bitter and clinging to my Bibles. Obama talks about economic stimulation packages, such as paying every American $1000, yet has no plan on how to pay for it. Windfall taxes will not cover it, no sir. Shame, I thought I was saving all this money with Obama’s Economic Plan of inflating my tires, now what WILL I do now?
LOL!

Funny, was anything Obama said untrue, No, McCain did say those things and more. How about you must have an income of over 5 million to be rich, maybe that’s why he thinks America is full of whiners. Of course I guess I’d feel that way too if I had over 100 million. 5 million must seem paltry to ole John.

Actually Republicans typically don’t whine, as we know we are living in the greatest country on earth, using our laptops, with our cell phones in our pockets and HDTV’s on, while reaching for our designer bottled water. I don’t hate my country, why does Obama?
I don’t want my taxes hiked to create a European socialism that Obama dreams of.
Let’s get McCain in office to keep our taxes low and drill for oil to drop those gas prices. Pelosi is a joke.

This is more like it. Stop trying to relate to religious nutcases, and start hanging the last 8 years around McCain’s neck. Thats what the voters want to see.

JR , you are kidding, right? You DID see the forum, right? McCain was JOKING, and he even said that he knew that his joke would get distorted by Obama, and sure enough….bam! by the way, do you see McCain taking the low road and making fun of Obama’s own definitiion of rich: …selling 25 million books? So what is that, an income of 50 million dollars?
Obama’s own words, as you say. It’s ridiculous what this man will stoop to when he knows he is desperate. Distorting McCain’s words out of context, or saying that McCain was out of his “cone of silence”…..truly silly silly silly season, from Obama the Desperate.

JR…I voted/donated to Hillary (first ever in my life). I am now going to volunteer in McCain offices near my house, as I don’t want a BO Presidency, ever. I usually vote Rep., but Hillary was the smartest candidate that I heard out there, now it’s McCain. I am pro America and Obama just isn’t…he has too many negatives to mention here.

I’m now convinced Obama will lose the general election. All his hype about change has proved to be nothing at all. He’s not only politics as usual, he’s becoming quite hostile – nothing at all like he was in the beginning. And those things that origionally brought us to him are now just an old and fading memory. There is no change. Just politics as usual and increasingly dirty politics at that.

Obama did well. He took a risk going into enemy territory, didnt get any votes there of course, but did effectively neutralize the underground ‘muslim’ smear campaign. Thats probably better than he hoped for.
Posted by: Mike | August 18, 2008, 7:54 pm 7:54 pm
Early on, the GOP seemed resigned to losing, and McCain was their sacrificial lamb. They apparently forgot to mention it to the American people or McCain. It looks like the Democrats are becoming more hostile with a hint of desperation creeping into the campaign. For example, the John Dean remark, and the Obama comment on his “pay grade” come at a bad time.

Mike the Muslim smear and Rev. Wright episode will not go away, not just for Evangelicals but regualar old Americans. What Obama needs to do is give McCain a great big ole kiss.
Obama has been pretty restrained so far, so much to bring up on McCain, his low passing grade for flight school. Fact he crashed multiple planes and was captured (what a great soldier). Keating Five, His horrible temper, hes overwhelming desire to start more wars (You know the things driving down the economy).
OH well, lets vote in McCain, im sure an old white guy really has his finger close to the pulse of what our country needs.

The truth of the matter is:
Thesis papers, lapel pins, CINC demands, elitist claims, magazine covers, guns and bitter religious zealots hasn’t done anything for you yet.
What makes you think anything is going to work now? ITS BEEN A YEAR AND A HALF! (And you’re still pulling straws)

The easiest attacks on McCain are straight forward:
He WILL start a war with Iran. If you think that is a good idea, vote for him. If you think that is a bad idea, don’t don’t vote for him.
He WILL nominate justices to create a majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. If you think that is a good idea, vote for don’t vote for him.
He will continue to cut taxes on people much much richer than you, even in the face of the largest deficits in the history of the country (created by a GOP President and his GOP Congress.) If you think that is a good idea, vote for him. If you think that is a bad idea, don’t vote for him.
He WILL continue a policy of turning your government (you’ve paid for all of it) into an open buffet for defense contractors and other GOP friends – profits will be privatized, business risk will belong to you and me.If you think that is a good idea, vote for him. If you think that is a bad idea, don’t vote for him.
He WILL continue a policy of pretending that environmental challenges don’t exist, ensuring that the search for smart/practical solutions will be postponed for at least another four years. If you think that is a good idea, vote for him. If you think that is a bad idea, don’t vote for him.
He WILL NOT offer any solutions to any of our problems that will sound fresh after the last 8 years. He’s got the same play book, and he’ll just try it all over again. If you think that is a good idea, vote for him. If you think that is a bad idea, don’t vote for him.

Willem van Oranje – Someone does have to pay for McCain’s militancy. The amazing thing is that republicans are not admitting that we are broke and fighting the present wars on money borrowed from China. You would have thought that McCain would have listened to Dr. Paul in the debates explain this very fact. What this tells me is that republicans are not fiscally conservative at least not anymore.
Posted by: Ben Straub | August 18, 2008, 8:47 pm 8:47 pm
Not sure if Obama noticed, but the first 4 years of the Bush administration had some great times in the stock market and economy, with low inflation and low taxes. Would have been even better but many Republicans betrayed their own beliefs and did the Democratic thing of spending money they didn’t have.
Then we elected a Democratic congress and things took a nose dive. If we elect a Democrat president with a Democratic congress we will crash and burn beyond belief.
Don’t believe it?
Jan 2001 gas=$1.59, Jan 2005=1.99
Republican Congress = 25% increase
Now $4.00+
Democratic Congress = 100% increase
Want your taxes to increase 100% too? Elect Obama.

Bill – Actually the bills passed in congress had democratic entitlements tucked in with the war spending requested by the republicans. Both parties are corrupt. The stock market was doing great because China was funding our consumption. Ron Paul again has spoken to all these things. We are going to experience alot more pain while we liquidate this debt. Of course if we add a few more wars who knows.

Obama got the Dem nomination solely on antiwar fervor from the “netroots.” He rode a wave of disenchantment with the Iraq War. It was Hillary’s support for that war that cost her the Dem nomination. But now with the Iraq War looking better, and attention shifting to Iran and even the nations of Georgia and Ukraine, the original rationale for his candidacy has evaporated. And now he’s scrambling to find a new reason why he should be elected that does NOT have anything to do with Iraq. The problem with Obama’s “netroots” supporters is that they’re still obsessed with Iraq, even though the rest of the nation is moving on.

Debra you didn’t answer the question I posed.
Does it matter to you that McCain advocates bombing Iran on money borrowed from China?

Who are all these commentors that make more than $250k a year? Those were the ONLY group mentioned that will be subject to possible higher taxes. So I’m not quite sure why the Republican making $25k a year is complaining about a Democrat raising taxes.
And while we’re on the democrat versus republican b*tchfest:
Deficits are another form of taxation. You just end up paying for it later in the form of higher inflation and interest rates

Arthur, you need to do more research before you try to put your thoughts together. First of all, President Kennedy fought in WWII, was a heroe, a best selling author, had traveled extensively even as a child, and best of all, he had 14 years of experience as a Congressman and a Senator. General Eisenhower managed millions of men which requires leadership, executive prowess and managerial skills. Senator Obama was a neighborhood community organizer and minimal times as aa state legislature before spending 146 days as a US senator before running for president. Arthur, there is no comparison

SteveL – The original rational has not evaporated. We need to ask the question: Is it our job to bomb people into submission, especially nations that have not attacked us, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians and maiming thousands of our troops in the process. And is it suicidal when we can’t even fund the oversees adventure.
Posted by: Ben Straub | August 18, 2008, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm
Bill,
I don’t suppose the inflation has anything to do with China and India consuming more gas, or the Enron loophole passed through with the help of McCain’s economic advisor.
Obama’s plan at least addresses a need to try and pay back the enormous budget deficit created by eight years of the republican spending machine and two years of inept democratic congress. The majority of Americans won’t even feel the burden of the tax “increase”.
I’m crying a river for those poor Exxon executives who have such high taxes…

Kitty – All that matters is whether or not the candidate speaks the truth and gives us a platform that is beneficial to the American people. Who cares if Obama umms a few times. If McCain’s teleprompter gives out he will be turning in circles. My man Paul wasn’t the best speaker, but of course he spoke truth.

Obama is going to win big. This will be a landslide of unbelievable proportion – the White House, and huge gains in the Senate and House. In short order the nation will be on the right track after eight years of being Bush-whacked. I am hopeful for the first time in ages!

Hmmm. After McCain’s exporting every American to Georgia and wanting to go to war with Russia and after his ‘Cone of Silence’, both tracking polls from Gallup and Rasmussen have Obama taking the lead again. And that is when McCain was heavily campaigning while Obama was visiting his family.
Internal polling apparently have showed the same in the McSame campaign because he flipflopped on Georgia after his bluster from last week and probably realized that America is weary all the wars McCain and his neocon buddies want to fight all over the world to ‘promote democracy at the barrel of a gun’

The problem with all the uuhhhging and ahhhing is it’s hard to decipher what he’s trying to say. I like that McCain in concise. Obama likes to listen to himself or something. He talks too much and doesn’t get anything out. That’s what matters.

If the US does elect another Republican, then it deserves to go down the tubes. Keep your assets liquid and plan to live abroad! The US literally can’t afford “four more years”. BTW McCain would still be a POW in Vietnam if we never ended that war.

The solution is for Republicans to stop acting like Democrats with all the spending. Obama is wrong for America especially after GWB. THIS is the difference between the parties:
RENO, NEV. – At a town hall meeting at Wooster High School just now, a questioner whom Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., had called on, assailed the Vietnam service of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
“He was the fattest prisoner that got off the plane!” said the man. “He doesn’t want to talk about how he turned in all those names.”
With some impatience in his voice, Obama interrupted the man to ask if he had a question, and after the man offered a couple queries, Obama said, “Respectfully, I’m going to disagree with you when it comes to McCain and his service. I think his policies are terrible, I think his service was honorable.”
The crowd applauded.
The moment stood in stark contrast with a moment in the 2004 election, when a town hall questioner told President George W. Bush about his then-opponent, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., “‘We got a candidate for president out here with two self-inflicted scratches, and I take that as an insult.’”
“Well, I appreciate that, thank you,” said Bush, who himself did not serve in Vietnam.

Evangelicals are leery of him. Women don’t support him. Gays. No. Latinos, No. African Americans, No. Conservative Republicans. Even they’re leery.
All of these problems. Now I see why he is fixated on Obama. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on!
I SAY AGAIN. THIS IS GOING TO BE A BLOWOUT.
Cynics can huff, puff and beat on their little bird chests and scream at the top of their lungs. All to be placed front and center in the loser’s column.

The closest Whole Foods is more than an hour away from here. The best I can do is Harris Teeter, and that’s a half hour drive. Fortunately my car gets about 30 mpg, so it’s not too expensive to get there…. just an arm and a leg. If Obama proposes a Whole Foods within a half hour of all Americans, I just might vote for him. Of course, it would take him a half an hour to say he was proposing that.

While whole foods is more expensive than conventional foods, a war against high fructose corn syrup, acidic meat, hormone laden meat, gmo foods, pesticide genes spliced into foods, etc. has been in the back of Obama’s mind this whole time. There’s been no real indication that The CHANGEling’s actual intellect — as opposed to his auto-grin opportunism — is much above lukewarm.
being editor of the Harvard law review would indicate otherwise…
As was noted earlier hits morning on Sirius Left, the former
Guidance Counselor of Obama’s private Hawaiian school
has supplied The Washington Post with a certified copy of
Obama’s Stanford-Banai IQ Certification, one of which was taken in 1966 when he was a kindergardener in Hawaii before moving to Indonesia, and one which was taken as entrance protocol as a freshman in his private (extremely exclusive) Honolulu private highschool.
His IQ was clocked at 172 and 166 respectively (IQ’s normally have a fluctuation of 6 or 7 points from test to test so that discrepency is normal).
That puts Obama in the certifiable clinical genius category.

Please site a source for this. Last I heard the top income tax bracket is 35% and capital gains is 15%. Most wealthy people have accountants that help avoid or defer a great majority of their taxes. Just last week was the news that most corporations pay virtually zero taxes.

The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).

More power to him for the private schools, and the privelages his family allowed him. I don’t be grudge anybody wealth or the american dream, that beign said why in the world should I be mad because McCain has money? and his son didnt work? I am more concerned about the double raise Michelle got at a hospital that wasn’t too kind to minorites once Obama became senator!. I have no problem saying I am undecided. I am waiting on some Obama supporter to tell me why I need to vote for him besides the fact they think McCain will be a third term bush. Even in this article people are so silly they rail on bush call him all names then point out the fact that he said McCain was unfit to be president so you don’t trust George he ran the country into the ground but one of the reasons people shouldnt vote for mccain is because Bush said he was unfit. hmmm

I’m sick of Obama’s OLD attacking techniqe.

“After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings. Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly.
“All five of the senators involved served out their terms. Only Glenn and McCain ran for re-election, and they were both re-elected.”

The facts stated by one poster which I include for your reference, omit the key point. For a while, McCain prevented federal investigators from stopping the fraud, and while he held up the investigation, the fraud grew to greater proportions, costing US taxpayers a few millions. It is a crime to perpetrate false propaganda which leads the US to war. McCain said on Letterman OCT 2001, I HAVE A SOURCE THAT SAYS IRAQ is the cause of the Anthrax WMD. Iraq may be the cause of the Anthrax WMD. Then we went to war against Iraq, based on such false impressions that Iraq even had WMDs like the ANTHRAX. John McCain seriously violated the Military Code of Conduct by trading “military information” and making numerous public statements that appeared favorable to the communist war effort in exchange for “special treatment.”

March 25, 1999, The Phoenix New Times: Ted Guy and Gordon “Swede” Larson, two former POWs, who were McCain’s senior ranking officers (SRO’s), at the time McCain says he was tortured in solitary confinement, told the New Times that while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.
“Between the two of us, it’s our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as "The Plantation"],” Larson says. “. . . My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted’s knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from.”

Obama is what this country needs in a leader.
There is no dirt to be found, there are no skeletons in the closet, There are no embarrasments……
Just a positive plan to put America back to work and cut the lobbyists out of the picture.
Obama will win in a landslide…..
Because people are tired of the same old, same old.

James Delaney-Drill, Drill, Drill…is that really the answer? If we had started drilling 7.5 years ago, would there be ANY invention of the (while still imperfect) hybrid cars, electric cars, etc.? No, there would be no motivation to develop alternate fuel sources. There is a reason besides the environment that things need to be done the way they are. If we just keep on drilling, SUV’s would keep getting bigger and the oil man will jkeep getting richer and we will suck those resources away too…we are an America of spoiled people living in excess…sometimes, you need to hit rock bottom before peple decide to put on their thinking caps and start making some changes!
Really! Think about it for a minute with an open mind….

James Danley, drilling off the Jersey shore 5 years from now will not change the price of oil today.
75 million acres of leases are already not being used to drill from. Why? All oil that is derived from US leases is sold to the highest bidder. Accountants run the WTO, not Mother Teresa. When it is profitable, the WTO companies will get around to drilling on the leases we already sold to them.
Selling more leases is not going to change anything.
We do not have the means to process any more oil, anyway. Someone, WTO or socialism, would have to build a new refinery plant. Someone, WTO or socialism, would have to build a new oil rig platform. All the platforms are busy and all the companies that make them are booked up completely, so this drilling talk is HOKUM by McCain. Total, absolute HOKUM.
More to the point:
What little oil we have left must be reserved for our military. It is time to stop selling any leases to WTO companies and reserve it all for America.

Debra: “Willem…..the top income earners in this country pay over 70% to taxes and the poor are taxed only about 2%”
You’ve phrased this incorrectly but I know what you want to say. You wanted to point out that 70% of government revenues is coming from top income earners. And that is exactly what is wrong with our income policies. To reverse this ‘problem’, lower income would have to go up, higher income would have to come down. The income gap has to be come down dramatically.
Where do you think that high income from top earners is coming?

Now who really wants unity?
Posted by: rachel | August 18, 2008, 10:24 pm 10:24 pm
Bruce Becker, first of all it is 68 million acres of land, most of which is on national parks and national monument lands. The main reason that there is no drilling on many of these leases right now is because of lawsuits, red tape and either there is very little oil or the oil that is there is too costly to drill. A federal judge blocked an attempt to drill on one lease just a couple of weeks ago.
Now then you wrote: “…drilling off the Jersey shore 5 years from now will not change the price of oil today.”
Look at what has happened to the cost of oil just since President Bush signed the executive order to rescind the previous executive order banning offshore drilling. And that signing is actually meaningless without Congress actually rescinding their ban. BUT the speculators are beginning to realize that the ban on offshore drilling may actually occur since over 70% of the American people want more drilling. It was speculation that drove the prices up and it is a change in speculation that is driving the price down. Just imagine how much it will drop should Congress actually rescind the ban.
Finally, just waiting twenty years for renewable fuels to become an equal source of energy with oil, won’t do anything to help us lower our dependency on foreign oil! That is unless we ALSO drill here and drill now. By flooding the world market with American oil will drive the price of oil down. It will bring more money into our economy by creating tens of thousands of new jobs.

Nearly 75% of the country cannot wait for the Bush administration to leave office.
Since McCain supports Bush’s policies anyone who supports McCain is voting for 4 more years of hard times for the U.S. taxpayers. This is reality.
Is that what most Americans want? No! That is why Obama has been receiving more contributions than McCain, every month, and that is why more Republicans than ever before in history are supporting the Democratic candidate.
It’s very simple: If you are happy with the present state of the economy, the war in Iraq, the present health care system and the way big-business runs Washington – vote for McCain.
If you are fed up with the way all of the above has been handled in the last 8 years – vote for Obama.
Think clearly: Whatever your party affiliation, our country is in very bad shape and your vote is more important than ever.

Posted by: Mike | August 18, 2008, 10:40 pm 10:40 pm
KJ, I am thinking about it with an open mind. I agree that drilling only will do very little. BUT had the Democrats and environmentalists not blocked the building of new nuclear plants, new refineries and not blocked offshore drilling for the past 20-30 years, we could probably be relying on nuclear power for 50% of our electricity today. And instead of relying on 70% foreign oil for our energy today, we probably would be down to 45% or 50%.
Sen. McCain has called for 45 new nuclear plants to be up and running by 2030.
Sen. McCain has proposed a $5,000 tax credit for each and every person who purchases a zero carbon emission car.
His opponents have scoffed at it, but Sen. McCain has also proposed that a $300 million prize be awarded “for the development of a battery package that has the size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars. That battery should deliver a power source at 30 percent of the current costs.”
Sen. McCain also supports encouraging wind, hydro and solar power.
We need to do it all. We can keep prices down by increasing our supply of domestic oil AND decreasing our demand for oil.

Obama has a plan and it is clearly laid out on his website among other places. Rather, it is McCain without any ideas – at least not any that differ from the failed policies of the last four years. That McCain and company misrepresented is only further proof of their tentative relationship to the truth. ‘Obama can’t comment on J. McCain’s military service.’ Why not? I respect him for not doing so, but the wing nuts have clearly forgotten Bush’s swiftboating of Kerry. Republican has become synonymous with hypocrite, and hypocrisy is the problem in this country. Energy independence means getting as far away from OIL as we can … you don’t do that by having your first tactic toward breaking the addiction as opening new pharmacies that will open in 7 years and bring prices down then…and say it will effect the market…all the while no regulation of speculators of the market.(Partly because the people who deregulated that market are your lead economy advisors)

GOPers want to blame the democrats for higher gas prises? The energy crisis is the result of Bush’s war, economic policies, and a long history of refusing to convert to renewables (a history J. McCain is very much part of). It is not their fault that the trend continued when anything they try to do is filibustered or vetoes. Republicans are admittedly good at politics, but they have no clue when it comes to policy. Look how they have ruined this country starting with taking us off the gold standard, deregulating the economy, creating speculator loopholes, lying to start a war, and borrowing billions from the Chinese to fund their failures. Clearly not this congresses fault, or certainly not wholly, for this happened on Republican watch.

dl, you wrote: “…along with the guy whose plan actually brings relief now with focusing on alternatives.” NOW? And that guy is still on the fence regarding nuclear power!
Even Sen. Obama acknowledges that it will take 20 years for alternative fuels to become just 50% of our energy source. And at the end of that twenty years 50% of our energy will still come from fossil fuel; and over 70% of that will still be foreign oil. So in twenty years we will still have the same national security issues regarding the threats of being cut off oil by rogue nations.
I repeat: Sen. McCain is calling for 45 new nuclear plants to be up and running by 2030. He is calling for increased efforts towards wind, hydro and solar energy in addition to drilling here and now.
We need to throw everything we have into this solution. It’s simple Economics 101 folks!! Lowering demand lowers prices. Increasing supply lowers prices. Lowering demand AND increasing supply lowers prices faster!

This election is a complete no-brainer. Obama recognizes the disaster we have on our hands and wants a clean break from Bush’s failed policies, “accomplished” at our expense by perverting government, trashing the constitution and everything it stands for, and antagonizing other countries, all because of his greed for power. McCain has said he agrees with most of Bush’s policies. If Obama wins, we could end up with the drastic reversal of course that we need. If McCain wins, things will improve slightly (since no one could be as bad as idiot George), but otherwise things will remain as they are. If that’s okay with you, vote for McCain. If you want significant change, you’ll be foolish not to vote for Obama. No-brainer.
