Ohio Congresswoman Dies of Aneurysm

ABC News’ Nitya Venkataraman and Teddy Davis Report: Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, died of an aneursym at 6:12 pm ET on Wedneday, according to Tubbs Jones spokesman Joe Hewitt.  The congresswoman suffered a hemorrhage caused by an aneurysm while driving her car in Cleveland Heights, Huron Road Hospital staff said.

Huron President Gus Kious said the aneurysm "burst in an inaccessible part of her brain".

Kious said the emergency medical team arrived on scene Tuesday night and acted quickly to move her to the hospital "where she was unstable and in critical condition throughout the night" until she passed away late Wednesday.

The congresswoman was  ound "unconscious behind the wheel of a moving car," according to Cleveland’s WOIO.

Tuesday’s condition followed a full day of activity, including planning for an upcoming discussion on electoral reform, scheduled for Sept. 4, 2008 at Cleveland State University.

Tubbs Jones, a top supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., during the Democratic primaries, was scheduled to travel to Denver on August 24, 2008 to attend the Democratic National Convention as a superdelegate.

In a June interview with ABC News’ Kate Snow, Tubbs Jones spoke of the sisterhood she shared with Clinton and the significance of her presidential candidacy.

"It is significant that Hillary Clinton is a woman. It’s not the bulwark upon which she runs, but it’s significant that young girls across this country have an opportunity to look at Hillary Clinton and say, I could be president," Tubbs Jones said.

She continued, "Regardless of what we talk about, women have a different way of managing. This is my 26th year in public office and we have an opportunity to be much more inclusive, in my opinion, than many of my male colleagues, who I love and who I work with."

Elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 and winning her district unopposed in 2004, Tubbs Jones was the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress. She was 58.

Capitol flags will be lowered to half staff before nightfall.

ABC News’ Dean Norland contributed to this report.

The answer to that question, regardless of context, is probably a no.

Pretty surprising how no major conservative politicians seem to have accidents. But liberals have plane crashes, bicycle deaths, and- medical emergencies while driving. Just fascinating.

What does it matter as to who this lady who has dedicated her life to enter the battlezone of American politics, supported? It does not matter that she is a politician…she is a human being and her family members are human beings. Common sense dictates that we wish her a full recovery and her family less pain. Whatever there is between her actions and God is for God to judge…not us.
I am very conservative and it sickens me to think any of the same mind would wish anyone harm.
Alos, the conspiracy views are just hilarious! Don’t you know more people have died that crossed the Clintons than anyone else in history? LOLROTF

They took her off life support this afternoon. She was a great Hillary supporter and will be missed. To her credit she wasn’t just voting for her skin color and stayed true to the Clinton’s. She was a shoe in for her reelection. Deadlist congress in years, they are saying…quite a few black women. RIP.

My prayers and condolences to the Jones family may she rest in peace. It’s unfortunate that misinformed (dumb) American’s are attempting to place a political spin on her death. It’s not about your political affiliation it’s about a human life being lost.

I just heard she is in critical condition with little brain activity. However, those of you who make light of such a serious situation, it may be your turn next.

To sick twists “Bob Lee” & “Geevil” – How incredibly sad it must be to find such delight in the pain and misery of others. If Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones was your mother or sister, would you be ecstatic about her trauma? I imagine you both living in a pig-sty of a house, sitting in your filthy sweatpants, fat, lazy, digusting and unable to get anyone to like or even pay attention to you. So you go on blogs like this and delight and mock human tragedies like this. I am a well-educated man, not prone to vulgarities, but if I met either of you, after reading your sick, twisted and pathetic comments on this site, I would call you to your faces what you both are…Sick Fat F**Ks. This dedicated, friendly, and intelligent congresswoman is a million times the men you both are.

Posted by: Debra | August 20, 2008, 3:03 pm 3:03 pm

If Bob Lee and cw are examples of compassionate conservatism, then make me a liberal. I don’t recall anyone celebrating Tony Snow’s death or for that matter Bob Novak’s brain tumor. What is wrong with Americans when they can’t separate their politics and their humanity?

Posted by: Catherine | August 20, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

Oh, come on, W4O! This is where to blast someone that is truly doing something deplorable.
What’s wrong? Why aren’t you slamming them?
W4O, you have a strange imbalance…

Posted by: For Anyone but... | August 20, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

Oh yeah, and “KevinGets” – same to you, you pathetic excuse for a human being.
If Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones has, in fact, passed away; then my sincere condolences to her family. They must be really proud of her in many ways. I watched her commentaries many times on “Hardball” on MSNBC and always admired her “tough friendliness”. She had a contagious smile. There was just no way you could not like her. Way too young to pass too. God Bless her!

And I meant to add now they are reporting hospitalized. Sounds like someone jumped the gun?

Posted by: tnette | August 20, 2008, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

To “Catherine” – To answer your intelligent and compassionate question, I believe that it is simply because they may be mentally ill. Or just plain miserable in their own pathetic lives. Either way, it is best to tell them where they can shove their hatred and then move on, thanking God that you & I and the majority of human beings are not like them at all.

Posted by: PhillyPaul | August 20, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Catherine wrote: “I don’t recall anyone celebrating Tony Snow’s death or for that matter Bob Novak’s brain tumor.”
Then you are willfully ignorant or a recent newcomer to internet news sites. I remember it distinctly ON THIS VERY BOARD.
“What is wrong with Americans when they can’t separate their politics and their humanity?”
Tell it to the ghouls on the Daily Kos who also reveled Tony Snow’s death and Novak’s diagnosis.
and BTW, I said nothing about Mrs. Jones’ diagnosis, I merely remarked on the lack of compassion shown when Novak and Snow were taken ill. If you choose to align yourself with such people that is your problem.

Posted by: cw | August 20, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Catherine,
It is well noted on many different sites the lack of Human decency afforded the families of both T. Snow and B. Novak. It doesn’t make it a viable “quid pro quo”, but it should not be denied either.

Posted by: For Anyone but... | August 20, 2008, 3:16 pm 3:16 pm

Morris,
your guy Obama is the one who said “McCain doesn’t know who he;’ dealing with”

Posted by: geevill | August 20, 2008, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

Conspiracy theorists show that a lot of folks flew out of the cuckoo’s nest. Prior comments on the Arkansas state chair who was shot tried to blame it on the Clintons as he had said he would vote for Obama at the convention. The fact is he was shot by a crazed person who just lost his job. NPR had a story that Congresswoman Tubbs since died but I haven’t seen it confirmed elsewhere.

Posted by: bhciapol | August 20, 2008, 3:19 pm 3:19 pm

Debra, Thank you.
Ok, now it is the “Is She or Isn’t She Dead?” forum…those of you that want to bash the media for incompetence can stay, but anyone opposed to conveying or discussing our condolences and support to the family needs to go down the hall to the “My Candidate is really an Arab and only 6.25% Black” forum.

Posted by: For Anyone but... | August 20, 2008, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

cw, etal. True, I don’t spend a lot of time on the websites. I didn’t see anything mean about Snow or Novak. If I had, my response would have been the same. I don’t mix my politics with my care and concern for my fellow human beings. We can have honest difference of opinions based on our own paradigms. I think we should be evolved enough to be able to disagree with a thought without demonizing the person.

Posted by: Catherine | August 20, 2008, 3:29 pm 3:29 pm

This is not the time or place to debate. I may disagree with her on her politics, but that does not matter at this time.
I live in one of her district communities, and now join many in praying for her.
Let us all realize that each one of us is important as we stand together…we are Americans.

Posted by: Tom G | August 20, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

I don’t understand this. Don’t you people think about God? This woman is a human being, regardless of her political persuasion. Do you realize that you will have to answer to God one day on why you hate so much? Will it be worth it, when He has to say “depart from Me, I never knew you?” Please stop making sport of this woman’s misfortune. Please. Thank you.

My prayers and best wishes to the family. I would like to note to those who are spewing hate, regardless of what happens to Stephanie Tubbs Jones, which is soley the will of the will of God. If she leaves this earth today or tommorrow, she would have left a mark, and would be remembered and missed by many, whether you agreed with her or not, she made a difference, she did not just take up air and space in this world, she took action and helped others and fought for others, what have you done? who will miss you? who will mourn you? who will remember you? so continue to take up air and space and spew hate, she made a difference and if her time is up then that probably means that she has fullfilled her purpose.
God Bless her and her family.

“If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
It doesn’t matter what is in your writings, here on this blog, as much as it matters what is in your heart.
It is superstitious to think God would slam you down and send you straight to hell for joking around at someone’s death. But, it is very real to not choose to have a personal relationship with Him.
In consideration of life and death, take this moment to consider where you are in relation to His free gift of life.
Don’t know Him? Just ask Him to reveal Himself to you and become your friend. He is all forgiving…every thought He knows and He loves you anyway. Just ask Him.
Try this: Think of Him now and ask Him, “What do you think of me? Why do you love me so much?” The next part is as easy as asking a favor from your best friend. “Will You come be a part of my life, whatever that means?”
He will do the rest.

Well, my condolences to the Jones family. The debate on politics should never get this acidic. No one on either side of the political debate should wish death or illness on another person. If you are doing so because of the other person’s political beliefs, then politics is probably above the intellectual level that your brain stem can support and you should leave this site for something less stressful like the Springer show.

She will be missed for a very long time. She was the best thing Ohio and the nation had at a time of economical struggle and war. She is a fighter for all humanity and she will be forever. May you rest in the Lord’s loving hands Ms. Stephanie Tubbs Jones — we all love you so very much !!

Those who choose to post the nasty comments in times such as this are those who hide behind their computer. Sad individuals…they’d never have the nerve to speak so in public. They are weaklings.
Regardless of who she supported, what her politics were, etc., her friends and family are suffering now. May she rest in peace and I pray for those who loved her and will miss her.

I am a Repub from just east of Cleveland. Rep. Jones was not my congresswoman, but I taught school for a long time in her district. She was a great lady. I am glad to see that at least some of these posts are respectful towards her or respectful of what she believed in. No need to criticize the others. Nuff said.

We wish her the best. Now, she is in heaven, she can continue to help Hillary, in a heavenly way.

Now, there are two souls in heaven that know of Hillary and her great work. This will be two heavenly super-delegate votes for President Hillary Clinton.

Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio. God Bless Her and Her Family! All hard working Americans lost a great, caring leader today that we needed so bad to defeat McSAME.

Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones was a wonderful lady and Congress woman representing well the people of the great state of Ohio. She had courage to stand up for the people in Ohio and did a great job in her life long career in public service. In this last campaign, the candidate who she believed would do the best job was Hillary, it took guts to speak out, but she had plenty of smarts and guts.

Posted by: Julkio | August 20, 2008, 9:01 pm 9:01 pm

Tubbs Jones had 26 years in public office. 10 years as congressperson; 8 years as district attorney, and 10 years as a judge.
She was a role model in leadership on the issues that were important to the community. She strongly supported Hillary Clinton and stood by her decision. It’s a sad day to hear of her being gone.

Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones was one of my all-time favorite politicians. Mainly because she did not come across as a typical Washington politician. She came across as a tough, funny, highly intelligent woman who cared about people. End of story. This reminds me of journalist Tim Russert’s untimely death, all the more stunning and depressing because both Stephanie & Tim has such an incredible wellspring of energy! Their passion practically lept from the television screen. Jesus, please Bless and keep her in your arms. Sometimes I just do not understand life at all.

Well, Representative Tubbs-Jones, has been and will continue to be one of my heroines. She was intelligent, out spoken and bold, things a lot of girls try not to be. I liked her very much because she would be very verbal about where she stood on issues, always seeking what is just. I am truly sad.

Posted by: irma | August 20, 2008, 9:36 pm 9:36 pm

My condolences to her family and all those who cared and supported her.
It is my belief that we, as a nation, are less for her loss. It is not often that we find amongst us a true servant of the people. She was one regardless of her politics. She gave of herself and we as a nation are better for her time and care. We will sorely miss her voice in speaking for peace and the underdog. A very, very sad loss indeed.

The internet reported that Stephani has passed away. She was a supporter of Hillary Clinton and was for women’s rights. Hillary was also for women’s rights. Obama is for no rights he is only interested in making history for himself. If elected he will not do the things he talked about and there will be no changes in politics. Stephanie was a wonderful woman and will be greatly missed by everyone and I know Hillary will miss her.

I am so sorry to hear this, may God give her family the strength they need throughout this incident.

I had to stop reading the above comments and skipped to the end. Why? The few comments, that I did read were cruel, and showed no compassion. Add these to road rage, etc. and it will prove that history is right. No country has stayed as #1. Looks like our time for downfall has arrived. A person that probably no one on this site ever knew and had zero idea as to what she did or failed to do just passed away. Now, idiots can only spend their time posting nasty comments . God Bless America, I say as one who is not very religious.

I decided to post to in recognition of Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, both for her lengthy career of public service and her zealous advocacy in favor of Hillary Clinton. I am an Obama supporter.
To the poster (or poser as it were) above, you don’t honor Tubbs-Jones, nor do you honor Hillary Clinton with your opportunistic verbal excrement; however, congratulations and pat yourself on the back!!–you have succeeded in dishonoring yourself and conclusively extinguishing any credibility you may have hoped to have had as a result of your repeated disillusioned rants at this site.

Peace be on to you stephanie tubbs the clintons released a statement
Clinton, in a statement with her husband, former President Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, said Tubbs Jones’ friendship “meant the world to us.”
“We could always count on her to be a shoulder on which to lean, an ear to bend, a voice to reassure,” shared a friendship with Tubbs Jones that “deepened through every trial and challenge.”
“Over the course of many years, with many ups and many downs, Stephanie was right by our side — unwavering, indefatigable,” the statement said. “It was that fighting spirit … that allowed Stephanie to rise from modest beginnings, to succeed in public service, to become a one-woman force for progress in our country.”

The most sincerest thoughts go out to Stephanie’s family, friends, and collegues. It is such an untimely death to be right now when she was at the top of her game and getting ready for the DNC. Another great woman who had been where no one had gone before.

My prayers go out to the family of Ms Tubbs-Jones while there are some on these blogs that sound as though they are the walking deadheads I chose to say they are to be pitied, for they are truly living in the pit of hell already,we are a nation of people that are above their intellect.

Today was a wonderful day here in Cleveland – comfortable weather, cool breezes, and a wonderful sunset to carry this remarkable woman’s soul into eternity.
Tomorrow, as the city wakes up, and people go about their business, I would hope that folks might take a moment to remember this wonderful soul who worked so hard for this, our jewel on Lake Erie, Cleveland.
To her family, friends, and loved ones I would offer this reminder: As long as she is alive in your thoughts and hearts, she will live forever.
May the Goddess grant you peace, light, and comfort eternal. Your last vote is cast, your labors are concluded, rest now, friend of the people.

David from Texas – I respect your rights s an American to express your opinions. It doesn’t help anyone of anything to use a death and family tragedy as a forum for ride and disrespectful behaviors. As another white american, I am glad I don’t live where I am exposed to your kind of “isms”.
Respect and condolences to her family and friends. I wish you peace and comfort in your time of grief.

This gracious lady will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. Her smile and contageous positive attitude brightened the world of everyone around her, and her courage and integrity should be an inspiration to all of us. Godspeed to your next destination, STJ, I know God has a special place in His Heaven for you.

PK: Thanks for the comment.
This boorish fool, “david from texas” should be pitied, for he will never climb out of his hole surrounded about with walls of bigotry and hatred.
He stands alone, for he will never be anything but what he is inside: a pustule, full of scorn and hate for all those things he will never understand.
He will never grow and flourish, reaching his potential. Instead, in time, he will shrivel and fade like a weed in the hot sun.

david from texas: Please stop pretending to be a Republican with your horrible remarks. You are simply a disgrace, and no one believes that your comments reflect anything but a twisted, sick mind.

Stephanie Tubbs-Jones was my law school classmate at Case Western Reserve University Law School, ’71-’74. From the beginning she impressed me. When we each ran for class president, I had a larger plurality but there had to be a runoff. She quickly switched gears and sat down with me, and we worked out an agreement where she would support me and in return I would use my power of appointment to appoint her to the position she was most interested in: As a voting member of the faculty admissions committee, where she could be a watchdog on discrimination. I well remember her active interest in what could be accomplished through politics.
The way people who didn’t know Stephanie should remember her, is that she patiently made her way from a humble Cleveland neighborhood to the U.S. Congress on pure determination and the belief that the system is meant to work for the benefit of the people. She remains an inspiration to me, and I will try to honor her memory by holding fast to my own idealism. Because ideals are what this country is made of.

R.I.P congresswoman Jones you will be missed.

Stephanie Tubbs-Jones served a broad constituency of greater Clevelanders and did it with equal passion. Sadly, most of you are ridiculously underinformed about her life, her work, and her career. Why is it that every article lauds her intelligence when it comes to academics, jurisprudence and public service on behalf of her constituents and then questions her ability to pick a presidential candidate? Why has this become so ugly? She fought long and hard for the candidate whose beliefs and policies most reflected her own. Is that so hard to get your mind around? Must we all look alike? Please. Honor her by respecting her and her opinions.
God bless you Representative Tubbs-Jones. May you live eternal life.

I am about as far right as you can get. Conservative to the core BUT, there are things more important then political thought and affiliations. Unfortunately, many comments posted here shows a clear loss of perspective. A young (yes, 58 is young)women dies abruptly and tragically and idiots like some posted here find humor in it.
