Paris’s Mom Thinks McCain Ad Not-So-Hot
Blogging on the Huffington Post, Kathy Hilton — the mother of socialite Paris Hilton and a donor to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign — says she does not approve of McCain’s new TV ad which unfavorably compares Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to her daughter.
"It is a complete waste of the money John McCain’s contributors have donated to his campaign," Hilton writes.
"It is a complete waste of the country’s time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States."
McCain, R-Ariz., uses an image of Paris Hilton in a new TV ad to imply Obama is an empty-headed celebrity, apparently unaware that Paris’s parents, Rick and Kathy, donated $4,600 to his campaign.

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
If the Republicans tactics of character assassination works for the third time then we just have to come to the conclusion that America is full of people with very low levels of intelligence

Whoops! McCain probably thought it was funny since he is PROUD of his commercial. Not too smart to tick off a donator, nor very smart to make light of the important issues all Americans are facing today. I’m not sure of why McCain is picking on Paris and Britney. Seems like they are more mature than he is. “Oops, he did it again!”

Amen Roland! You hit the nail directly on the head. Do we as a country move towards the positive (hope, change, world respect, leadership, taking care of our own people and our own country) or the negative (frivilous, negative, distracting, rich getting richer, war everyone, etc). It’s our choise. Most democracies throught history have fallen due to a lack of foresight by their people.

mc-more-war is desperate and it is showing. He knows he will never run again so he will listen to whatever the sleezeball advisers tell him to do. Some of these sleezeballs are the same ones that brought us bush & cheney. Hopefully America will finally see thru this below-the-curb campaigning. Obama 2008 will be GREAT!!!

With all the other mind-numbing garbage that’s on T.V. these days, a candidate for president has the gaul to put out this sleeze? His donors have a right to be angry. I’d sure as heck want a refund.

And what do we have here a stupid, senile, 80 year old, half baked COMEDIAN. who thinks he should be President because “IT IS HIS TURN”… He has not got brains enough to pour water out of a boot if the instructions are in LARGE print on the heel.

Kathy Hilton apparently thinks that McSame is ABLE to discuss anything substantial.
Look at what he is telling Americans about his plans for Social Security: ” “Sen. McCain believes this is so important that we do not politicize this debate during an election season.”
In other words: “Don’t you worry your pretty little heads with what my plans for Social Security are. I’m not gonna tell you anyway.”

I’m still trying to figure out why mccain confused the Packers with the Steelers last month while speaking to a Pittsburgh crowd. He said he used the names of the famous Steelers Defensive line of the 1970′s while being interrogated, too bad these guys weren’t even playing when mccain was being interrogated. He is either going senile or he was trying to pull one over on the Pittsburgh crowd, either way this is BAD news for mc-more-war. Opps he did it again!! You can check out the article by going into google and typing “mccain steelers” and picking the first link.

Obama shouldn’t let little things like this detract him from the issues. I still don’t know if he supports off-shore drilling, NAFTA, open borders, higher taxes, abortion, withdrawal within a specific time limit from Iraq etc. He’s had ample media opportunity, but his position on these issues is still unclear. McCain seems more direct and blunt about his positions. I don’t agree with them, but at least I understand them. The debacle in Congress, over energy, is another issue I would like the candidates to discuss since they are, at least on paper, a part of that dysfunctional entity.

I have recently been to a number of countries in Europe, South America and Asia and a lot of folks out there are surprised that McCain even stood a chance of been elected as the next president of the US. Yes, they are all impressed by Obama and a lot of them wished they has someone like him in their country. They just dont understand Americans. To be honest, sometimes I dont either.

McCain is trying to divert the election to trivia that is as shallow and as crass as him. He needs to focus on the millions of people who have been losing their homes and their jobs, and explain where the Republicans were when this all happened.

Prior to this ad, McCain’s OWN website referred to McCain as “A political celebrity, McCain is considered a top contender for the nomination.” — Obama’s had no such reference. — McCain’s self promotion was scrubbed out of his site when the ad was run. — Additionally, McCain has been a frequent repeat visitor to a dozen TV Celebrity-oriented talk shows…who’s calling who what?

If McCain wasted a tenth as much on that spot as Kathy Hilton does keeping Paris out of jail for her numerous scrapes, or it is 100th as damaging as Paris’s sexcapades on tape, well then she might know more than he does about spending investments wisely.
OTW, McCain hit the nail on the head. It’s a cult of celebrity and when it works for the celebs, they celebrate it, and when it doesn’t, they whine.
“We’re not electing a comedian, we’re electing a president. They’re used to be a difference.”
So a successful commedian or a stuffed shirt lawyer without a piece of legislation to call his own? That’s easy. At least McCain got a laugh. What has your guy done lately besides hawk beer and brats for a photo-op?
I wanted a serious discussion of the issues. Instead we got Obama Girl and Hillary on A Urinal Decoration. I see you guys can dish it out but you can’t take it. And THAT is exactly the point. Obama doesn’t have what it takes.

I am concerned that the voters will vote for McCain because of the fear and distrust he is spreading of Obama. This happened the last two elections and I am frightened it may happen a third. After all, Karl Rove, is “consulting” with the McCain camp. I really cannot understand why Americans are so insecure that they actually fall for all the junk Bush, et al and now, McCain, et al, have and are throwing their way. If McCain is elected, I believe the rest of the world will write American off and just go about their business. We will truly have become the Paper Tiger.

The add may be disrespectful to Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears. Both have more personal accomplishments than Barack Obama. Paris had a successful reality tv show, a successful perfume line, and a successful clothing line. She earned several million dollars last year. Brittany had a successful acting career with Disney and a successful music career, at least before K-Fed. Yep, McCain should have been more respectful to Paris and Brittany. Paris’ family is right to call him out on that one.

Yeah! Obama is always looking out for the little guy. Let’s do another useless rebate check and raise taxes for the oil companies. Because they won’t add those taxes into the price of gas. I wish Democrats would stop screaming how intelligent they are when they can’t grasp the concept of free market and capitalism. In case you didn’t know it, these are the things that made this country great. Not giving the government more control. And if Obama and the democrats get control we will definitely be heading towards a socialist country. Unfortunately most Americans are to ignorant to grasp this. They like the idea of the gov’t controlling their lives. Give me this and give me that. It all comes full circle and the more you get from them the more control they have. Stop blaming Buch for your poor decisions on mortgages and investments. Nobody forces anyone to sign these documents. They do it of their own free will, then want to be bailed out when it doesn’t work out. Conservatives better WAKE UP or we will be in trouble.

Rolland, I travel extensively as well, and have found the same international viewpoint. What is worrying is that if McCain gets in, there will be a worldwide withdrawal of investment in the US and a strong inclination to not buy US goods. We are already seeing this trend develop as world markets hedge their bets on the coming US election. It is only reasonable that they do not want to invest in a bankrupt economy that is run by a rich kid dunce that graduated 894 out of 899 in his class. Whenever anybody tries to engage McCain in dialog, all they get is his simplistic and mindless patriotic clichés. The world fears and loathes Bush and bomb bomb McCain and will continue to realign with anti American or neutral sentiments to protect themselves from what they see as American Terrorism. The world will not tolerate another four years of Bush/McCain. They will isolate themselves from the problem and turn their backs. When Obama travels the world, people turn out by the hundreds of thousands, and if given the chance, would turn out in the millions. They come to show support, not because they necessarily adore Barack Obamas personality or have a strong interest in US politics, but because they are impressed by his intelligence and his proactive and promising policies. Sometimes the problems of a dysfunctional household that are obvious to detached outsiders, when they are viewing the situation from a distance, are not so obvious to those involved in the internal feuds. We should take heed of the opinions of our friends and allies from around the world.

Sounds like Hilton endorsed OBAMA. Plus the characterization of two blonds in the ad is reflective of the McCain camp’s view of women. He did leave his wife for another woman after she was crippled in a car accident. Think about it! Every other veteran I know is very reverent, private, quite and reserved about their service in War. McCain puts it on a bumper sticker in neon lights, no class. He is exploiting his service in the military for personal gain. I personally find that very distasteful. Man of honor??? OBAMA 2008!!

Ask an Obama fan this — if you were in business and the government took 100% of your profits, would you continue to operate the business or would you find something better to do with your time? Then remind them that oil companies already pay 35% of their net income in federal income taxes and some pay as much as 10% of their net income in state income taxes. After you deduct thta from their earnings, they may not have enough “windfall profits” to pay for the Obama “emergency rebate.” Democrats in the Senate have already threatened to nationalize the oil industry. What incentive do the oil companies have to stay in business if they cannot keep any of their earnings? What incentive do all those retirement funds that own stocks in oil comapnies have to invest in oil companies if all their profits are removed? And, what pray tell, would the American public do if the oil companies said to hell with it — every person in America who works for an oil company go stand in the unemployment line. We are closing our American operations and focusing on our profitable enterprises elsewhere. What is it called — the butterfly factor — when you don’t see the consequences of actions that seem innoculous on the surface?

Tyler, the market works this way: Americans pay billions of dollars in taxes, the government buys Army advertisements with some of it, and spends most of it on big companies who sell us missiles, tanks, oh and yes these days they outsource all kinds of other services, including interrogation/torture companies. You probably think you know all about economics, can tell me all about inflation vs stock investment portfolios and blah blah blah, yet you don’t see that running up a national deifict into the trillions and not investing into America– something the Republicans have done– is our largest economic problem today. Go take another microeconomics course, egghead, and then tell me about macroeconomics…

It’s amazing that Hilton seems to understand more of the plight of average Americans than McSame’s campaign – but then, that isn’t unusual for an elitist and arrogant Republican candidate hobbling around in $520 shoes.
But then surely Hilton, who is apparently a Republican herself, realizes that the GOP has few accomplishments to campaign on, and their candidate was pulled out from under the 2000 Bush bus after Republicans swiftboated and ran over him.
Now the same people who tossed McSame under the bus are running his campaign now – but we are supposed to believe he represents real change from the policies of the last eight years. The only change I’ve seen so far is massive flipflopping and posturing on a scale that makes on wonder if the “maverick” is nothing more than a polite term for self-centered dictator wanna-be.

No matter what happens, I will always love my son even though he has done some things in the past I am not proud of. So, I very much appreciate the Hilton’s position on the ad offensive to the Hilton name especially their daughter.
McCain lost a lot more than the $4,600. The Hiltons were ardent McCain supporters and had held fundraisers for him. That is over. The ad, of which McCain is so proud of, has cost him millions in contributions.

Supporting Obama’s campaign is very hard to do since he changes his stance on issues so often. He is a socialist and hates capitalism where our jobs and salaries come from.

You can’t look at economics without looking at the government. Lets see, the Democrats have a majority in Congress. In fact, during the last eight years the Republicans have not had a fillibuster proof majority. So, the responsibility for the current state of the economy must rest equally on the shoulders of both the Republicans and the Democrats. That might explain why both Congress and the President have a terrible approval rating. The Democrats are not going to ride into Washington and save us and we’re not all going to burn in hell if a Republican is elected president. Instead, lets get some fiscally responsible policies that make sense.

I guess according to the McBush(McCain) camp if your a dynamic speaker that inspires your listeners you really have no business being president. Instead a president should be like their candidate a bumbling speaker that no one gets inspired by and few want to listen to. This fits very well since the whole idea of the republican party is that you have a president that the corporations and extreme rich can control. Basicly a puppet. McBush fits the bill.
It is dangerous to those in power to have someone who can actually rally the citizens of this country to action. Obama fits that bill.

The people of America deserve a better campaign than they are getting from negative right wing attacks.
Let’s face it, we need a campaign that is based on issues that are affecting every household in the country.
To suggest that Obama is some how being summarized as a “celebrity with little or no experience” is not accurate in my opinion. Look at the reception Obama received Internationally. He showed American’s that with the right approach we are the leaders in diplomacy and we will be greeted positively. In Berlin they were saluting and waving the American flag, not burning them.
In the past week McShame has approved 2 TV ads one comparing Obama to Paris Hilton / Brittney Spears and the second comparing him to Moses.
If I contributed to him, I would stop supporting a moranic campaign like this immediately.
At the same time he is making a joke out of Christian beliefs. He is not doing himself any good by his childish advertising campaign.
I think Americans are smart enough to start seeing just how desperate the republican party is. McSame is going to sink many ships for those who endorsed him during their re-election bids.
Careful what you ask for, because people of faith will turn against McSame for making a mockery out of Christian’s belief in Moses.
Comaparing OBAMA to Moses could be the last straw that will break the republican party’s back.
Talking about bringing down the HOUSE, well guess what, those who follow a foolish attempt to damage Obama’s image are only making OBAMA look like the RIGHT “ONE”.
Vote for CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN. “YES WE CAN” BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA on November 4, 2008.

Elections are primarily referendums. If you like the way things were run under Bush and the republicans, vote for their successor. If not, then you need to vote for someone else. It’s as simple as that. Me I can’t see voting for a retirement age candidate over a candidate in his prime. I respect McCain (at least I used to before the Britney/Paris smear campaign started), but he’s not the generation that is ready to face the new world politcs of the 21st century. I believe the world is entering a new age and it’s time to leave the old one behind if we intend to remain a world leader.

I’d love to see the video footage of Obama opposing the war from the beginning. Surely he did tv shows like he did when he wanted Don Imus fired. Or maybe he went the op-ed route. I’d love to read the article he sent to the Chicago Tribune. There is a tangible record of his opposition, right? Obama might have had a chance in this election despite his terrible economic policies if he hadn’t lied about fillibustering FISA. He’s proved he is no different than the current lot we’ve got in Washington. He may even be worse because he disillusioned the youth of America. The rest of us were already cynical.

Real Americans are fed up with karl rove tactics and are not going to be duped a third time into picking an idiot for president. They say that when you get VERY OLD you enter your SECOND CHILDHOOD. Not very bright to tick off a political donor. What will he do to America. Things will be worse than the bush administration.

McCain trying to marginalize Senator Obama wasn’t a coincidence, considering his attacks came the same time as the republican administration took a hit (‘Internal Justice Dept. Report Cites Illegal Hiring Practices’ by Carrie Johnson Tuesday, July 29, 2008; Page A01). Democrats can do better than the past eight years.
Posted by: ramona | August 3, 2008, 3:01 pm 3:01 pm
The FISA bill is more complicated than you may get, it wasn’t the place to take some last stand for a lot of reasons. As for a visible record of opposition, yes of course the record is there. Have you never seen the footage when, before we went to war, Obama said something like, “It is not that I am against the idea of war, what I am against are STUPID wars…”

It might be a referendum election if George Bush’s VP was running on the GP ticket but he isn’t. You can’t argue that George Bush believes in global warming or thinks that environmental issues should be taken seriously without getting laughed at — but put the same words in John McCain’s mouth and they ring true. John McCain has long said that the Republicans in Washington failed Americans by not controlling spending … people will remember that … and think what if we elected him instead of Bush.

I really don’t understand where the whole arrogant thing is coming from in regards to Obama. Is it because he won’t get down in the mud with McCain? Is it because he went to Harvard…since when is that a bad thing? I suspect that alot of it has to do with the elephant in the room which is that he’s black (in appearance) and many people just can’t stomach it. I also suspect that what these same people REALLY want to say in the place of “arrogant” is that he’s “uppity” or that he needs to “stay in his place” These are of coarse turn of the 20th century mindsets and socially unacceptible to utter in public, so they peg him with the euphamism “arrogant” but the implication is the same.

HERE’S THE INTERESTING AND TRUE PART OF THIS ABC NEWS STORY.
“apparently unaware that Paris’s parents, Rick and Kathy, donated $4,600 to his campaign”.
McCAIN IS “UNAWARE” OF HALF THE THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY. THIS IS JUST ONE THAT IS NOT REALLY IMPORTANT. IF HE THINKS OBAMA IS CELEBRITY, I THINK McCAIN IS SENILE OLD GRUMPY GUY THAT HAS NO IDEA WHAT IS HE INTO. AFTER ALL, WE ALL KNOW THAT OBAMA IS GOING TO WIN ANYWAY. McCAIN IS FOR SURE GOOD FOR THIS COUNTRY WITH HIS EXPERIEMCE, BUT WHITE HOUSE WONT BE THE PLACE WHERE DECISIONS WILL BE COMING FROM, IT WILL BE BIG RANCH IN CRAWFORD, TEXAS. WE ALL KNOW THAT AND THAT IS WHY OBAMA WILL WIN AND WE ALL KNOW THAT McCAIN WONT BE ABLE TO USE HIS EXPERIENCE. DON’T BE STUBORN REPUBLICAN.
Posted by: BOBSTER | August 3, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm
Hopeless, I agree with you, but I am seriously wondering whether his calculation might actually be correct, and he can win because enough Americans aren’t smart enough to see past the silly ads. Will they fall for it, since it is a simple and easy message? Maybe…
Posted by: David Wilson | August 3, 2008, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm
Yes, Barack Obama and John McCain come from the Senate. The same Senate that has a horrible approval rating. With either one, we will get politics as usual — the question is whether the starting point for the lackluster legislation will come from the right or from the left. John McCain has stood up to his party and worked across the aisle to try to pass legislation like immigration reform. I don’t agree with many of the things he says or does. But I know who he is and what he will do if he’s elected. I know that he’s not some evil monster or some senile old man that will destroy our country. I also know that his economic policies will do no harm. As for Obama, the only solid record I can find on him is that he used to be very strongly pro-choice but that he has “moved to the right” to win an election. I know that he seems to be willing to tax an industry out of existence and that he thinks “fairness in taxation” is more important than raising revenues for social programs. The choice this year absolutely sucks — no doubt about it — but I will vote for the known before I will take a risk.

McCain is clearly wealthier, wears elitist clothes, has a socialite wife and an elitist life style, he is clearly establishment, and is extremely arrogant. The way he talks down to Obama, disrespects and mocks him in very tasteless commercials. McCain even takes full credit for the surge even though technically it was Bush’s doing, not McCain’s and not only that, Dem’s said that we didn’t send in enough troops from the very beginning. McCain thinks that his completely incorrect version of the Iraq timeline is correct and everyone else (literally) is apparently wrong. Arrogance all the way around from McCain.
Posted by: Scotti | August 3, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm
What’s funny is that McCain has more in common with Paris Hilton than does Obama. Had it not been for family connections, McCain wouldn’t have been able to go to college, much less Annapolis. Then ol John got into politics because of his second wife’s money and connections. Just as Paris has gotten this far on connections, the same can be said about McCain.

Mrs. Hilton is offended because McCain was basically saying her daughter is famous because of her “hype.” Seriously, where are her accomplishments?
I thought the ads were funny and did have some truth to them- that’s why they are upsetting to the Obama people. Obama is humorless because he is so insecure. He certainly has a right to be insecure with that thin, pathetic resume of his.

HiltonsUnderstandEconomics….that may have been true of the John McCain of yesteryear, but why is he the way he is NOW? Why has he been in lockstep with Bush these past few years? Why the total reversal on seemingly all his core values and beleifs? Frankly it astonishes me that someone could turn on themselves like that. That’s what has people scratching their heads. If the John McCain of 2000 were running today i’d definately give him serious consideration and I’m a democrat! He was intriguing and daring and a rebel with a cuase back then, but now he seems to have abandoned all that in favor of winning at any cost.

Speaking of doing and saying anything to get elected, let’s not forget Obama’s reversal on wire-tapping, offshore drilling, gun control, disowning Rev. Wright, among others.
I’m not saying McCain is an angel, he’s not, but Obama has been bragging all along about his new kind of politics and he’s just been lying to us. He will do whatever is prudent at the time to gain favor with who he needs, at that moment. That makes him very untrustworthy in my eyes.

Durant Imboden, yes I saw that, too. I got the impression he is so scripted that he doesn’t know what he thinks until his advisers tell him what to say– exactly like Bush for the last 8 years. Talking about accomplishments – MaCain graduating 894 out of a Naval Academy class of 899 and coupled with ill temper temper are hardly the stuff presidents are made of. Graduating high from Harvard and being elected a senator from the state of Illonis is a great accomplishment for a kid with no Dad around the house. Law professorship at the University of Chicago? Arizona has nothing to compare with Harvard and Chicago. When did Britney and Paris graduate from Harvard. MaCain with all his Daddy’s previlage would not even be hired as cook at Harvard. No more 8 years of GOP fools. The counrty is broke from mismanagement, wars, Erron scandal, thieves in the stock market, greedy oil companies, falling dallar, 498B dollars negative balance of trade, $10 Trillion dollars national debt. More more lies to start another war with Iran. People open youe eyes to McSame. He is the same as Bush, $10B/Month in Iraq. McCain’s crticism is a typical marketing strategy when you’re not number one. Attack the leader with anything negative rather than promoting what your product/service has to offer. Avoid the facts, it hurts when you’re losing. Just look at TV ads and you can see many.

The commercial was tasteless baloney. It feels racist to me too. These guys design commercials around feelings, not what you actually see. For me it felt racist, like I’m supposed to think of black celebrity as a bad thing…why? And Obama’s no more “celebrity” than McCain, they’re both Senators, they’re both known around the world. So even the commercial’s key message falls hypocritical.

I’m a bit confused about the phrase “do-nothing” attached to two of the people in the ad. No, Paris has not done a lot. But whether you like her or not (I’m not a fan of hers), Britney has accomplished a massive amount given how young she is. Is she troubled? Yes. But there is no way she is without substance or accomplishments.

I wouldn’t exactly say I’m a Paris Hilton fan (though I have nothing against her), but what has she done to deserve this? If she were actively campaigning for Senator Obama that would be one thing, but to malign her just to make a cheap political shot doesn’t sit well with me. Karl Rove’s right-wing talking points have been firmly adopted by all of the mainstream media. For the last several weeks now, every time I tune in to hear what the mainstream media is saying about the election they are “asking” the “questions” “Is Obama up to the job?”, “Is Obama being presumptious?”,”Who does Obama think he is?” God forbid we should ask the same questions of John McCain, a man born to privilege, the son of an Admiral, a man who wears $520 loafers and is married to the heiress of a vast beer distributorship fortune, a man who graduated at the bottom of his class in the Naval Academy and who thinks Iran and Pakistan share a border. No, McCain is a rich old white man, so he looks Presidential. McCain made an ad that mocked Obama by putting him on a dollar bill, and then screamed that Obama was playing the race card when Obama commented on it. The media double standard that favors the right-wing does a grave disservice to the American people.

Here’s the countries that currently have universal health care: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal,Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, England, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Cuba, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brunei, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. In this country 30 million don’t even have insurance and about 45 million more are underinsured. The above lists shows a whole bunch of democracies have universal health care. Why do we let our public’s health be determined solely on market forces, profit and loss? Isn’t that how we got into this mess, rising health care costs caused by market forces?

McCain and his republican supporters have demonstrated their lack of intelligence and ability to debate issues affecting the American people. It is pathetic that someone running for the office of President of the US would stoop so low! However, it is no supprise that every time this country elects a republican we end up in deficits and recessions! America needs real leadership not someone who just got shot down in Vietnam and thinks that a qualification for high office. For over 20years he has been in congress what has he not done that he thinks he will accomplish in 4years? Insinuations and insults will not deter young people from voting for Obama. I guess he thinks Britney and Paris are dumb blondes and he has the power to laugh at them. We have so many problems presently, people loosing their homes, jobs, high gas and food prices and he is having fun with the money we contributed. Negative campaigning has a very high record of success. Because John McCain hasn’t been able to push through the near-tie he has had with Obama for weeks, it is a smart political strategy to go negative.
Let’s also not forget the Tom Bradley factor. It’s very clear that even ‘progressive Californian’ whites, once they get in the voting booth, may have a hard time punching the hole for a black candidate. McCain needs to focus on making that doubt grow.
Love it or hate it, McCain is following some time-worn strategies that DO work with the majority of Americans – who are basically brainless and easy to manipulate.

Dear “HiltonsUnderstandEconomics”,
Now, if the thought that the oil companies will not still be making profits [hand over fist] even after they pay higher taxes ain’t just a teensy abomination of the facts I don’t know what else is! Not withstanding that, why should the average citizen care any more for the profits of the already insanely wealthy than their own well-being? Sure it’s not ideal to take away incentive to make money; which is precisely why the REAL government [the ultra wealthy] need to be shown the value and power of the common person who works a lot harder than they do for so much less and does so quite happily most of the time [I might add]. But this whole Hilton biz is a great representation of how ignorant the conservative stagnation in this country really is—-I mean—nothing like biting the hand that feeds you everywhere you turn. First you bite your consumers by making it virtually impossible to get by without forcing them to start picking locks; and then you bite the hand of your very own donors–who are every bit as wealthy and powerful as you are. But, of course, I don’t mean “you”, but the geniuses running the McCain campaign.

“The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. – Senator Thad Cochran, R-MS
“I decided I didn’t want this guy anywhere near a trigger.” – Senator Pete Domenici, R-NM
“There’s nothing redeeming about John McCain…he’s a hypocrite.” – Former House GOP Whip Tom DeLay
“He is a vicious person. They so disliked him that they wouldn’t support him. – Former Representative Charles LeBoutillier, R-NY
“His temper would place this country at risk in international affairs, and the world perhaps in danger. In my mind, that should disqualify him.” – Former Senator Bob Smith, R-NH
“What happens if he gets angry in crisis in the presidency? It’s the president’s job to negotiate and stay calm. I just don’t see that he has that quality.” – Former Arizona GOP Chairman John Hinz
“Hardheaded is one way to say it. Arrogant is another way to say it. Hubristic is another way to say it. Too proud for his own good is another way to say it. It’s a quality about him that disturbs me.” Larry Wilkerson, former chief aide to Colin Powell
“John McCain is Bob Dole minus the charm, conservatism, and youth. Unlike McCain, Dole didn’t lie all the time while claiming to engage in ‘straight talk.’” – Ann Coulter

Thank you Kathy Hilton, I am very glad you stood up for your daughter, I would do the same for my children, I hope Britney Spears parents do the same. John McCain said he loved the ad and is having fun at your daughter expense. Mr. & Mrs. Spears speak up for your daughter she had her trials and tribulations lately. This ad was a total waste of our contributions.

Good for Paris Hilton’s mother! When I saw the ad I saw it as John McCain’s effort to exploit two young women who were trying to get their lives together. John McCain is selling his soul to try to become president.

If you really want to know what is a waste it is our time. Obama will not win – he is not ready and everyone left with a brain knows that. So we must endure months of so called news reports about what Obama said or didn’t say – Like any of it is worth our time to read it or listen to it.
Does anyone really think the American people are going to turn over their country to a Chicago Organizer with 18 months in Congress achieved with the help of Rev Wright and other nuts of CHI Town.
As far the Paris Hiltom Comparison – it was inspired – She has done NOTHING a lot like Palosi yet they are famious and only God knows why?
If you owned a company and your family and others depended on it who would you pick? Case closed. Question who are Obamas friends or has disowned them all?

First off, I cannot believe so many republicans are saying Obama is flip flopping when you can hardly recognize the McCain from last election and the McCain now – talk about willing to sell you soul just to get power! Secondly, with the exception of believing there is man made global warming issues, McCain really is mimicking the current Bush administrations approach. Democrats got the majority in the senate and house only in the last two years but not enough to override vetos – our position now economically and politically can only be placed on this administration and the congress that was republican until the last election and gave that administration everything they wanted.
And finally, I agree with the comment that accusing Obama of being too arrogant because he is self-confident (as if McCain is not with his temper tantrums and insultingly patronizing ads) is really a cleaned up version of calling Obama “uppity” – Let’s face it, no one calls McCain arrogant yet he does the same, no one called George W. arrogant yet he too acts the same and lacked experience as well. When they do it, the republicans call it confident leadership. It is pretty clear that if we vote McCain in, we will deserve the recession, loss of world leadership and reputation – not just because of our leadership but because the voters are so easily manipulated and don’t vote the issues.

Using these Girls ( citzens ) in a negative manner in any campaign commercial shows a lack of judgement for anyone who is seeking the highest office in the land. It is indeed unbecoming of a man who is in his 70s seventies and can be a grandfather to children the ages of both Ms. Spears and Ms. Hilton to prey on the weakness ( if it is ) for his own political gain rather than trying to be an insipration to them and impart some words of wisdom to them. God Help us if this is who we get for a President come November. We should all pray for the old man to continue to dream and the young man to see visions that will lead us into a a better and inspiring future.

to Notagain, hey great name choice!!
Regarging flipflopping…when a candidate changes a handful of positions over years because of new information, that’s smart. For example, when gasoline reaches $4 a gallon, one might conclude that it is time to re-examine one’s assumptions. Or if one sees how tax reductions help the economy, it’s smart to endorse them.
Howver, when a child changes his mind about a dozen things in a couple of weeks, and there is clearly a purpose behind the changes (which AIN’T idealism), than THAT’s flip-flopping.
Got it?

The country is in bad shape because of several administrations not planning for the future and one inept Congress after another. The politicans are just like the bloggers; there is no way they will admit someone of the other party has a good idea and cooperation is not an option. This country has lost its identity; it was founded on the ideals of hard work with LIMITED government. This has been lost to government promising to solve all our problemsa and thus overspending. We aslo have an entitlement society where people think they deserve things without working for it. Just read all the complaints about the rich. McCain is rich – so what; Obama made 4 million form writing a book, good for him. You rewarded for hard work and being smart – don’t wait for the government to take care of you, do it yourself. The problems of this country will be solved by the people not the government.

Jozy, you say (and I quote): “Is it wise for a presidential canidate to say that any American is an emptyheaded person? Sure does speak volumes of what that person thinks of the American people. ”
My answer is that it is NOT wise for a politician to say this-because it’s the truth. However, any honest person would say that most Americans are emptyheaded because we most cetainly are! Look at the fact that we have no ability to solve the social security upcoming disaster crisis. Don’t blame the politicians on that one-blaqme us emptyheaded Americans. After all, it’s us who elects our leaders and it’s US who could (but don’t and won’t) but pressure on our leaders to face the future disasters and deal with them now.

As a mother, I too was offended by the ad. How might John McCain feel if a child of his was used in such a way by a political compaign?? But more importantly, as a woman I was EXTREMELY offended. It was not an accident that male actors were not used in the ad. The McCain campaign has accused that Obama would rather loose a war to win a campaign. Well this ad clearly demonstrates that McCain would rather degrade women and exploit young ladies to win a campaign.

I am an active Democrat and I am NOT offended by the ad. First off, it’s not insulting to Britney or Paris. It’s just affirming of their celebrity status. Big deal! It should be flattering to them. Secondly, Obama is, first and foremost, a celebrity. I’ve been using the word “celebrity” all through the primaries to describe Obama. His followers have become more like a radical cult group. The ad raises a valid point: Does Obama’s celebrity status translate to being an effective politician? Americans need to ponder that question before November.

Question: Is being a republican or white come first before being an American? What is your definition of patriotism? This man Obama made a good will trip abroad to tell the people of this world that America is still willing to work with the world, that America is not a bully but an entity of freedom. The world received his message with both warmth and joy; refreshing to know that America can live up to its promises to protect the free world and not bully allies and snub enemies and all he gets from you is a back lash for being such a good ambassador. Unbelievable people. Two words; Hate and racism lives in your hearts. Truth hurts but that is the only explanation otherwise you may even look dumber denying these two facts.

re Obama’s grades.
Yes we all know Obama is a Harvard graduate and edited the law review. But I don’t think his grades have been published. Not that it matters much..since the late 70′s, college grades have been like toilet paper. Neither does his being the editor of the law review matter much, except it seems to be his greatest accomplishment.
Really, I think he’s just as smart, maybe smarter than the typical Harvard law school graduate.

The point is that both Kathy Hilton and her husband contributed the maximum amount allowed by individuals to the McCain campaign and he repays them by trashing their daughter in a national campaign commercial. The obvious lack of gratitude aside, once again McCain and his campaign staff demonstrate a complete lack of ability to think things through before they act. To Kitty, McCain flip-flopping not flip-flopping but responding to changes – both started with no off shore oil drilling, both have changed in response. McCain not only changed positions on things in response to energy but EVERYTHING he stood for in the last election. He bought into the neocon agenda – before he was a traditional “old fashion” republican and a fiscal conservative – that I could respect (and didn’t agree with entirely but tend to be a moderate fiscally). Neocons aren’t against government involvement in our lives they just think that government should stay out of maintaining integrity and fairness in business and spend all its time imposing itself on what we do in our private (non-commercial sector)lives. That is what I mean about flip-flopping. I don’t trust him anymore – 4 years ago I might of disagreed with him but I thought he was a man of integrity. Now, all I see is a man that is willing to do anything, say anything, pander to anyone in order to get his time in the white house and this started about 2.5 years ago – honestly think he cut a deal with the Bush administration for party support.

McCain seem to have little regards for women, he see women as beautiful things to be taken to bed and nothing more. He dumped his wife because of money and once called cindy a slut out of anger. Jeffery12342001: you said “No surprise. McCain is an idiot and offers this country nothing but 4 more years of being Bush. His party of Republicans offer this country nothing, absolutely nothing.” (unquote). You’re right. They’ve offered nothing but have damaged plenty of things. The polls show the media is lying through their teeth when they say that McCain is neck and neck with Obama. The right-wing corpies are trying to ‘king make.’ They’ve violated the public trust with their misuse of the airwaves for political propaganda. They should be trust busted like Microsoft had done a few years ago. We need to write our congress people to investigate the media and bust up their monopoly and get so me fair reporting in again. It’s pretty bad when anchors like Katie Couric are threatened by her corporate bosses to keep her mouth shut and not speak about things they don’t approve of. We have media monopoly and media self-censorship in the service of the Republican National Committee.

Frankly, I don’t care for a lot of McCain’s positions either, but anyone accusing him of wholesale position changes hasn’t been paying attention. If anything, like Bush, he is TOO stubborn. Anybody with 20+ years in public service will have a lot of position changes. If he/she doesn’t, then they should be booted out of office post haste. Line up all the politicians, and McCain will align with the camp with the most consistent positions.
But Obama, wow!! In 2 months, he has changed from a hard-left radical, to a middle of the road compromiser. Now that’s change, if you can believe it. (for the record, I don’t believe it. Radicals don’t change their stripes that fast).

I think there are two things bringing Obama and McCain closer.
(1) It happens in almost every campaign. Extremes tend to move back to center.
(2) Obama’s stances on issues since his ‘nomination’ indicate there are few philosophical differences b/t the two: FISA, Iran saber rattling, continued presence in Iraq past 16 months, commitment to extend war in Afghanistan, offshore drilling, etc. Add to that Obama’s call for reparations and you narrow any edge for Obama.

Fellow Americans please join me in supporting Barack Obama for President you can donate at this link feel free to use my name Raul Pedraza as the person who encouraged you.
Now please allow me share my personal reasons why I proudly support Senator Obama and am certain he is the correct choice for our great country.
Senator Obama supported our countries troops by authoring and passing passing vital legislation to make conditions for our injured better at Walter Reed and other Veterans hospitals.
Senator Obama was a strong supporter of Jim Webbs’ improved GI Bill. George W. Bush and his cohort in crime John Mc Cain both came out against the GI Bill which would give the troops a college education until the bill had overwhelming support and the threatened veto had no chance. I am a veteran and my son fought in Iraq and we are both proud to be part of the thousands of veterans for Barack Obama.
Senator Obama is an embodiment of the American dream and a uniter not a divider. He picked himself up from meager means to a Harvard Law degree and became editor of the Harvard Law Review the first black person to ever achieve the honor. He chose to serve as a community organizer rather than as a highly compensated corporate attorney. He served as an Illinois state legislator and then became a Senator from Illinois. He is today the Democratic party’s nominee for President. To come so far is an incredible story and one that proves again the value of hard work and tenacity in the land of opportunity. Add in the fact that he is black and it is incredible how far we have all come and also how far we have to go.
His judgment on foreign affairs continues to shine through. He was right that we did not belong in Iraq and that our treasure and the lives of our troops are getting plundered for no good reason. He was right that Afghanistan was where our enemies should be battled. He was right that diplomacy needed to be a bigger part of our arsenal and has stated he would negotiate with our enemies but not bow to them. Today you can see the Republican Bush administration making exactly the moves Senator Obama has called for and then of course taking credit for the correct actions.
As a Cuban American I am happy to see Senator Obama willing to try a new strategy for relations to Cuba besides the failed embargo we have tried for fifty(50) years with no results. Why should we keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome?
Our nation needs allies to confront the big issues that face our country we cannot go it alone and can no longer act as if we own the planet. Our allies all support OBAMA.
Please don’t let John Mc Cains’ campaign and its lies and negative propaganda cause you concern or make you believe it is too great a risk to back the candidate with the better intellect and integrity. Shout out YES WE CAN! PROUDLY and vote for Barack Obama. You wont regret putting our country on the right path.

McCain’s ad does what the liberal media, gaga over Obama, refuses to do – challenge the notion that Obama has any experience that qualifies him to be President.

I am still trying to figure out how he got into Harvard—his high school grads didn’t warrant him getting into anything more than at best community college….and once out of college Obama’s fellow attorneys said thought Obama was a poor attorney. Obama’s whole life has been that of a bumbling drug using idiot—and yet some how Harvard past him? It doesn’t make sense.

The ad does not compare B. Obama unfavorably to Paris Hilton. It compares Paris Hilton unfavorably to B. Obama, stating that he’s the biggest celebrity in the World, yes, even bigger than Paris Hilton. Why is this regarded as an “attack” ad – he worked hard for that celebrity; it is his greatest achievement and is the reason he won his party’s nomination. Celebrity isn’t a bad thing, it just isn’t a good basis for picking someone to be President of the U.S. Nevertheless, as B. Obama has been demonstrating, it helps. If Joe Biden were so celebrated, with his 36 years of Senate experience, he’d be the Democratic nominee.

I’m beginning to like these ads. They ridicule Obama childishly with name calling and such, but in the long run they show the republicans and especially McCain to be buffoons, unable to address real issues and left to go the lowest possible road. Keep up the good work McBush, you make people think twice about your being president.

I am an independent and voting for McCain. I made up my mind when Obama started talking about meeting with that nut job in Iran.
Make no mistake – You call it what you want (IE scare tactics) but there are people in this world that want to kill us because we are American. If you do not believe me just put your toes in another country and see what the reaction is. I think McCain is more capable of keeping us safe. We do not need another terrorist attack. I honestly do not think any decent people should have to share this world with minds who think its ok to strap a bomb on themselves and walk into a crowd of people.

notafool: You haven’t been reading the papers lately have you? McCain has had lots of position changes in the last couple weeks. What about his recent flip flops on illegal immigration, on tax cuts, on withdrawal timetable (not a bad idea),just to name a very few. In fact, Keith Olberman says there’s not enough time on his 4 year contract to cover all of McCain’s flip-flops . Trouble with you cons is, you have a way of twisting truth and leaving out important facts when it suits your agenda. When I tried to post just now, I just got my post censored by ABC as spam. I didn’t slander anyone. That proves my point that the media are in cahoots with John McCain and ABC is corrupt as all h3ll.

Is this how we choose a president. By deciding which one is not like Paris Hilton. What does this have to do with anything even remotely sane. What about the economy and wow after seeing this latest ad; how about education. Nothing against Paris Hilton; she’s probably doing alot better than most of the voters who fall for ads like this one.

Obama never came from hard left radical position, but was a moderate fiscally and liberal socially. In both positions, they are conducive to compromise and working on both sides of the aisle. Those things that Obama has changed has been stated as just that – ability to work with and negotiate between opposing interests.
McCain in last election was a conservative fiscally and moderate socially. He too, use to negotiate and compromise across the aisle. A lot of that is because most social conservatives feel they are morally correct and there is no room for compromise or negotiating a moderate stance between opposing interests. Are we truly talking flip flopping or is this a pejorative term to be applied to the other side. The reason I do not trust McCain’s stand anymore is he has moved further to the right and away from the moderate center. I really don’t have a problem with Obama moving a bit to the center. People in American politics need to be pragmatists and willing to compromise and negotiate. Those that draw a line in the sand and say this is it – my way or the highway (current administration tends to do this when they can) are destructive to the process. There are only a few things we should hold solid on and I think the founding fathers defined those pretty well – things like rule of law, equal application of law, government should be primarily about defense and regulating commerce, separation of church and state, etc.

Note: the spell checker said that ‘idiocracy’ isn’t a word. So I guess that means I can claim I coined it!

Obama may be a celebrity for all the right reasons by reflecting a change from all the corruption associated with Washington and the Republican Party. McCain’s call to fame, shot down while on a mission, is running thin. This election is for Obama to loose, and he may if he keeps falling for trying to respond to McCain’s negatives. The media is adding fuel to the fire by re-running the negative ads and that only helps McCain. With a $492 billion dollar deficit to explain to the American public, what other issue do you need to go after McCain and the Republicans? Maybe ask: are we better off than eight years ago?

I have yet to see the ad that compares Obama to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears–but since it came out the internet blogs on the subject has made for good entertainment for me. I’m sure Kathy Hilton isn’t all that pleased about the image that’s been potrayed about her daughter–what mother would? But fact of the matter is that Paris is famous for being famous. She has no talents or skills to speak of. And that’s supposed to be the point of the ad. Smear tactics or not (it depends on how you may see it–it’s only going to get worse as we get closer to election day. I can’t wait to see the rebuttle from Obama’s side. I’m sure it will be just as underhanded.

Although her choice of venue, the Huffington Post is a little curious for a “Republican” donor, you can certainly understand Mrs. Hilton’s displeasure about the McCain ad. If I were her, I would have responded the same way.
If your kids will inherit more wealth than they can ever spend and start doing things in their youth that look … well, like filthy rich kids trying to find their own identify … you don’t want them to be compared to some Chicago political hack who sounds like he thinks he is the Messiah, and has a horde of young followers who sound like they think he is too.
Nonetheless, the McCain ad did nothing more than reflect a concern that a lot of people have and did it in a light hearted way. We aren’t interested in voting for a Messiah. And we aren’t interested in voting for a President of the World. If Obama wants to be those, fine, he’s just in the wrong place.

McCain is so stupid, he insults the people who contribute money to him. What a jackass! His camp is as senile as he is. For anyone who graduated 5th from the bottom of his class to; in any way attempt to call a Harvard grad empty, is a stretch far beyond anything that resembles reality. McCain is out of his league mentally and anyone who thinks that he could hold a mental candle to one of the most intelligent minds in politics is just as dumb as he is. But I tend to forget that there are plenty of dumb Republicans to go around.

This is hilarious and almost too good to be true. The senile old man, John McSame, insults some of his own contributors by making fun of their daughter in one of his campaign commercials. Only someone dumb enough to follow Karl Rove’s advice would find himself in this predicament. Keep it up McSame and Rove, you’re doing the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama a huge favor. 100,000 donors in 1 day with 1/3 of them being new donors. I can’t wait till the figures for July are released by the Federal Election Commission. Obama 08!!! Thanks,

I’m a democrat, and I think the ad is brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s not character assassination when it’s true. Like Paris and Britney, Obama has gained celebrity for doing very little. In the political world, he’s got a pretty thin CV, yet millions of adoring fans. The comparison is spot on.

I think the ad did just what McCain wanted it to. Got people talking. It’s funny to see how many people get so defensive over their candidate Obama. Maybe we should all go put air in our tires to fix the gas price crisis while we are all crying about how sad we are for Obama, Paris and Britney. Yeah, all people we should be looking up to alright, a drunk driver, a woman who abandoned her children and went nuts and then of course the man himself…who pulls the race card everytime someone challenges his issues and won’t have a town hall to discuss this issues because he won’t be able to script his answers by getting the questions early. Good for McCain for running this ad and getting people talking about the election! It takes something this ridiculous sometimes to get the ignorant people of this country to even know there is an election going on. They will turn up the tv if Paris and Britney are on … so finally someone got people watching and listening. Good for you McCain!

To add to my last comment–I think the ad is brilliant also because it speaks to the reality TV nature of this campaign. McCain gets it that many Americans adore Obama for superficial reasons, not because they know anything about his accomplishments—oops, which accomplishments? This is the first Reality TV election, and McCain touched a nerve. It shows that McCain is not out of touch. It very much knows what’s going on with the election and popular culture.

I think the ‘experience’ argument is a worthless argument. They used it against JFK, but he won and was one of our best presidents, as Obama will be. You see, Obama’s ideas are a lot better than mccain’s, and it’s the ideas and intentions that are way more than ‘experience’ because it’s not like he’s going to be sitting up there just choosing what to do on his own.
He’s going to have tons of experts and experienced peole to advise him. It’s the ideology that matters, now how old or how long you’ve been in DC.

Cynical or clinical? Psychologists in the U.S.A. and UK. created a celebrity worship scale to rate the problems. Introduced the Celebrity Attitude Scale, a 34 item suggests that celebrity worship comprises one dimension in which lower scores on the scale involved individualistic behavior such as watching, listening to, reading and learning about celebrities whilst the higher levels of worship are characterized by empathy, over-identification, and obsession with the celebrity.

McCain spends the week running false, negative ads. This weekend he says he’s “not running a negative campaign.”
McCain says “sixteen months sounds like a pretty good timetable.” The next day he denies that he used the word “timetable.”
McCain says during one of the Republican debates that the economy is not his strong suit. Later, he twice denies that he said it.
McCain says that he’s spent his career advancing equal opportunity. During a Florida press conference, a reporter asks for examples. He stammers, stutters, and can’t come up with one.
Seems to be a pattern emerging here. This guy is either so addlepated that he doesn’t know what he’s saying or he lies. Neither alternative recommends him for the Presidency.

Yeah thats right Obama is empty and hasnt done anything with his wretched life. He didnt graduate from Harvard Law and become the first black editor of the Law review. And when he graduated and came to Chicago to work in the community instead of selling out to a money grubbing law firm, I guess he wasnt doing anything either. When he decided to get into politics and got elected into the State senate, I guess he still was heading toward a path of non accomplishment. Then when he decided to run for the US Senate and won (with the largest margin of victory in Illinois history), I guess that was another failure in his terrible life. And while in the State Senate he helped enact state death penalty reform. (Another non accomplishment) And that leads us to today where hes the Democrats nominee for President of the United States, (yeah he really hasnt accomplished anything) Now McCain on the other hand, is full of accomplishments. Many of which are hard to accomplish. Im sure he worked extremely hard graduating 5th from the bottom of his class in that military academy. It also takes a lot of skill to crash 3 planes in the service and live to crash a 4th one and get captured by the enemy. Wow what a great thing he did. then he returns home and dumps his faithful and injured wife for a younger millionairess. (I wish I could do that, but another great accomplishment). I could go on , but you get the point. McCain is a worthless, dumb old fart who needs to retire to a rest home and play with his wifes money until the end. Hes not worthy of sitting in the White House (even for a visit)

To Dennis–Let’s agree that Britney has accomplishments. I think the media has been too harsh to her and Paris. It’s actually revolting. We could argue, though, over how much talent, no? But, I didn’t expect the comment to be taken so literally. Britney and Paris are symbols for the emptiness of American celebrity, are they not? We can at least agree that Americans have a thing for vacuous celebrities. And, Obama sort of fits into this pop culture obsession with an “idea” of someone, not the real someone. Some Americans want to have an “idea” about Obama as a change agent even though his record doesn’t show he’s ever changed anything significant. He’s just said, “Change” and people go, “Wow, Change!” There is a connection on a psychological level between Obamamania and the obsesssion with Britney and Paris. I think it shows McCain knows what time it is. And, remember, Americans love to see their celebrities totally destroyed in the end.

McCain has to try to put Obama down to try to make himself look better. That’s how the guys used to do in high school whenever 2 guys liked a girl. One would put the other down in an attempt to make themselves look like a better choice. Grow up McCain.

Dennis, don’t be stupid. The ad wasn’t designed to insult Britney and Paris. It was designed to say that Obama is a MAJOR celebrity, just like them. Britney and Paris poll as two of the biggest celebrities in the world. Voters can make their own conclusions about his celebrity status.
Posted by: Danny | August 3, 2008, 6:26 pm 6:26 pm
Danny, you are obviously wrong about the meaning of the using Britney and Paris. I would think if McCain wanted to highlight the celebrity status he could have used someone with greater world appeal like….Beyonce, Modonna, Gwen S. Britney’s career is over and no one cares about Paris. McCain was obviously working for a different angle, an angle would rile the white voters with a bias or prejudice leaning.

As with anyone in the news some people connect with then only because they are celebrities and others for other reasons. To suggest that McCain is not a celebrity would be silly (Where would he be if he had not been captured and then left his wife for a rich woman? Neither of which one is supposed to do).
Einstein, Mother Teresa and Mozart were celebrities. I.e., celebrity status tells us nothing about someone’s substance or lack thereof.

Dennis, we may have to agree to disagree. I know that’s old-fashioned in this dog-eat-dog blogger age–and I’m not even old. But, I think the ad showed that like many celebrities who haven’t accomplished much, Obama is gaining celebrity without accomplishing much. You disagree. It’s o.k. I’m more interested in how ads/pop culture/visual images work than arguing over the internet. In this case, I just think this one works: It equates Obama with empty celebrity. I’m not saying it is the high road for McCain but that it does what it was intended to do. And, it wouldn’t get so many people’s ire up if it didn’t hit a nerve. I think a lot of people are concerned that Obama has so much celebrity with such a thin CV. We are hiring the president after all. JFK is held up as an example of how a young, inexperienced person can be president. People need to read our history. JFK was young but NOT inexperienced. He had a military record and eleven years in politics. If elected, Obama would be the least qualified (in tangible terms) person we have ever elected. I think that bears some thought, don’t you?

chattyway: “I am still trying to figure out how he got into Harvard—”
It’s called Affirmative Action. Obama is the Affirmative Action Candidate. Grades, experience, accomplishments, things you work to achieve…they don’t matter. Heritage, group affiliation…that’s what matters.
For Harvard editor, small deal. For POTUS, big deal.
Obama can talk, for sure…like all Harvard lawyers. But has he done anything significant in his life that wasn’t due to Affirmative Action or being in the right place at the right time? The answer to that is clearly no. For those of you who don’t know, by the way, his primary opponent and main election opponent in his Senate run both were knocked out by divorce scandals. He hasn’t passed any significant legislation in the U.S. Congress. He has never run a business. He was a lecturer, not a professor in Chicago. He didn’t bass a bill in the Illinois legislature until his 8th year when the party bosses put his name on everything. He has never even tried to develop a compromise solution to a difficult issue while in Congress. The man is an empty vessel.
But he does read the tele-promter effectively!!

Kathy, the first thing that comes to my mind when you say this is during the 30s people used movies as a release of depression-tension. To a much lesser degree, John McCain is doing the same thing. He’s adding a little comedy to the situation that is confronting the US. Obama must be defeated! His inexperince is his killer. By using this ad John is not boring the audience, but he’s making the very fine point that his opponent has a thin resume. God bless Senator John S. McCain, our troops, and the entire American people

“You haven’t been reading the papers lately have you? McCain has had lots of position changes in the last couple weeks. What about his recent flip flops on illegal immigration, on tax cuts, on withdrawal timetable (not a bad idea)”
He didn’t flip on immigration. He recognized the voice of the people and now favors enforcing the border before comprehensive reform. His adjustment is reasonable given the facts of the situation.
He didn’t flip on tax cuts. He supported Bush’s cuts but voted against them because they weren’t packaged with spending cuts, which is a key position he has. Since the cuts worked he now will not rescind them, but will still work to curtail spending. Very rational.
16 months withdrawal in Iraq? He isn’t saying we’ll be out in total in 16 months. He has simply acknowledged the fact that partial withdrawl is possible in a short timeframe, now that the surge has transformed a very bad situation. Anybody with a brain knows we will be there for decades anyway. Why would we give up bases in the most stratgic geography in the region after sacrificing so many brave young men and women. Only self-absorbed liberals would want to do that.

To Brooklyn Democrat
The answer to your questions may be the following:
McCain’s campaign said this week, that McCain DOES NOT SPEAK FOR THE CAMPAIGN. That was after McCain suggested he could see how a compromise bill on saving social security may have to tax the rich on their incomes. Right now no one pays social security tax after a cutoff under $100K.
The campaign then said McCain does not speak for the campaign.
Really. They have all gaffes, changes, inventive ideas and mistakes covered. He doesnt speak for the campaign now.

Senator Obama got into Harvard based on academics and affirmative action did not elevate him to the head of the Harvard review while he was there. That accomplishment further attests to his academic ability. what you should wonder about is how Senator McCain gradutated from the naval academy, at the bottom of his class. I suspect family ties (the other kind of affirmative action) got him in and helped him to get out.

McCain went on Letterman in 2001 and claimed that the anthrax attacks were Iraqi WMD attacks.
He said he had SOURCES who told him that it was the Iraqi’s who attacked NBC and two liberals in Congress.
It turns out, the anthrax attackers work for the US in a military fort in Maryland. One was recently accused and committed suicide although he had his trial coming up soon and was pleading innocent. Another man in the same lab had been accused and managed to get a $5 million payoff for being falsely accused. Neither were Iraqi’s. SO… who is the traitor in the White House who provided the false source info to McCain to spread to inflame the public to go to war against Iraq, based on the fears around WMDs like anthrax? WHEN WILL MCCAIN NAME HIS SOURCE IN THE WHITE HOUSE?
WHO IS THE TRAITOR? MCCAIN?

jock59801: “Your assumption that Obama could only have gotten into Harvard through affirmative action is classicly racist.”
But of course, Jock, I didn’t say that. I said he was the law review editor because of Affirmative Action. Please point out for us his accomplishments that would have justified that prestigous appointment.
I also said he is the Affirmative Action candidate. Please point out to us why after 154 days in the Senate and no legistlative, business, or academic accomplishments, he is qualified for the most important job in the world.
If you have something truthful to support your claim, please do so.

In a celebrity-focused culture like ours, comparing somebody to a celebrity cannot be bad publicity. What were the McSame people thinking? This ad actually helps Obama by recognizing his celebrity status! Anybody he is not a white blond. The comparison just does not make sense. Perhaps they should have used Michael Jackson.

According to Knight-Ridder, the Obama dollar bill remark is related to a photoshop job by McCain’s campaign in which they put a face of Obama on a bill.
The racial overtone was added, after the fact, by McCain, if indeed the entire thing was about a photoshop of Obama’s face as Knight-Ridder reports.
Posted by: Bruce Becker | August 3, 2008, 7:50 pm 7:50 pm
McCain can and will rant politically about Obama, but his remarks will cause very little damage to Obama’s Image, compare to the massive damage Obama’s own irrational, erratic actions and words are causing his for his fiction-based political image
This is so clear to those who care to examine his character with objective, simple values of integrity. On his trip to Iraq’s embattled troops, one soldier assigned to secure his safety sent a letter that etailed Obama’s open separation an disain for enlisted troops, walking right past every one wanting to shake his hand, even though there was plenty of time, an it is a tradition for all visiting celebs to do. Instead, Obama ignored every outstretched hand, and briskly walked into the VIP recreation center, where he had comfort, high-level attention, and reporters with ‘news’ cameras. No ‘news’ camera showed him ignoring the common soldiers.
Personally, after watching politics since President Eisenhower’s election campaign, I am appalled at the way America votes today! With computers that enable quick and graphic analysis of actions in every part of our land, it is clear that the majority of Democratic Party voters vote in the High-crime centers of the USA. Geographically speaking, it is roughly 8% of the Geophysical area of our Nation that Obama, has his support from. Is this fair representation? Not even close!
That same geographical section of America also has the lowest representation in our Peace-keeping Armed Forces, as Liberals actively seek to abandon our national safety, preferring a life of government handouts to living self-sufficient. War against any enemy is anathema for that minority, who raise loud, raucous protests against those who would rather die protecting America, than allow Murderous Religious Pagans to rape, pilage, an shred their loved ones, homes, an community.
It is not coincidental that the High-crime, High Democratic Population centers also favor altered morals, morals that demand anhilation of the ancient, sustainable mother-father family base, where father is the primary home and community husband, protector, and financial foundation.
High-crime has only one moral focus, an it is Not for others’ best interests, a characteristic trait of every individual Democrat I have met in my 60+ years. This mindset is precisely what Obama displayed during his visit to his freedom protectors, on duty in Iraq. What would he care about their safety, if he was President?
Far worse, what does he care about anyone he would rule over here at home?

The fact that people would say Obama was editor of Harvard Law Review because he was black shows how little they understand about Harvard Law Review or any law review for that matter. The selection process is blind. Candidates for law review have numbers on their papers and applications, not their names. You have to be pretty much at the top of your class to be considered for law review, let alone president of the law review.

Obama is a smart guy. He was probably qualified to get into Harvard. If he should have been appointed the law review editor, he accomplishments since then are surprisingly lean, other than a knack for getting elected to offices.
To think he wasn’t helped by Affirmative Action is silly.
But my comments that implied it was the sole reason for him getting into a good school were too flippant. I think he is an intelligent man who is notably unqualified to be President.

Sure, Obama is a celeb because he is well spoken and clever and because he is a person of color who is succeeding.
He is even too glib, as many of his most important statements whiz by the non-nuanced listeners with 90 IQ. The average IQ is 100, so millions are a bit below that, right? Obama says in his stump speeches: “I will restore habeas corpus”. Does anyone actually know what he means? Obama wants to work to restore your right to be charged with a crime before the CIA tortures you.
Register and vote. Bush and McCain intend to veto the bill just passed to end the CIA’s unConstitutional and internationally illegal use of torture. The country needs 60 Dems in the Senate to avoid filibuster. Register and vote absentee. Use your same signature when you register as on your driving license so you can duplicate it when you sign your absentee ballot. 40% of registered voters did not vote in the 2004 election. Only 15% of under 26 voted in the Texas primary, although from all the coverage of HRC and Obama you would have thought it was the Super Bowl. 13% of Republicans under 26 voted in the Texas primary.
If all the people who dont register and dont even turn out when they have registered would write in Ron Paul, they could elect him and restore the Constitution. Its amazing when you think about it.
Only 12.5% of the eligible population voted for Bush in 2004. Only 1/4 of the population voted.

Joyce,
McCain is clearly qualified to be President. He has been in the Senate for 20+ years He has passed important legislation, some of which is derided by conservatives. He has been a national figure for decades, unlike many congress people, who don’t seek the limelight. He comes from a military family, and was a high officer himself. He has long demonstrated an interest and knowledge of foreign affairs. He has been in many stressful and difficult situations in his life, and emerged successful. Because of his long track record, we know who he is, warts and all.
I see none of this in Obama.
I disagree with many of McCain’s position. But he has been in many situations that provide experience to support holding the most important office in the world. Obama has not.

What makes Senator McCain qualified for the presidency?
1) Spare me the POW talk
2) Experience without good judgment is void. By using experience argument alone, we should be having Sen. Ted Stevens, the recently indicted senator from Alaska, as the republican candidate.
So what makes McCain qualified for the presidency?

It seems to me you support McCain because he has been around longer, not because you think he is better qualified for the job of president.
You said:
1) “McCain is clearly qualified to be President. He has been in the Senate for 20+ years He has passed important legislation, some of which is derided by conservatives.”
Ted Stevens seems to be fit this description as well. Still I don’t think I/you would want him to be the nominee for the Republican party.
2) “He comes from a military family, and was a high officer himself.”
Many career-military people could say the same. Does that mean he should be trusted with representing us before foreign allies? Does he know about diplomacy? what about the economy? He doesn’t seem to be able to answer any social question (but I may be biased in my view of him)
3) “He has been in many stressful and difficult situations in his life, and emerged successful.”
I think a president needs to have a better hold on his emotions.
His colleagues have testified of his temper, which we have all been able to witness already, in this short period of time: remember the way he turned down a question from a WSJ reporter couple of days ago?

Thank you. I disagree, of course, but that is to be expected.
I too wish that Obama had waited until he had more “experience.” Although I’m not exactly sure what “experience” is relevant to the unique position of POTUS, other than just being older (of course, Obama is older than Clinton was when he was elected).
But I select a President based on their policy positions, intelligence, ability to understand complexities, and their ability to make a good case for their positions. I am therefore looking forward to an Obama presidency.

I’ve read several comments about the concern of electing an empty suite to the Whitehouse. This is apparently not a disqualification as we have had an empty suite in the Whitehouse for almost 8 years. What did GW ever succeed at before getting into government? Has his Viet Nam draft dodging experience made him a good Commander in Chief?
Posted by: Rufus | August 3, 2008, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm
Obama and McCain both benefitted from affirmative action in their education.
Obama graduated in the top 10% of his Harvard Law School class.
McCain graduated in the bottom 1% of his academy class.
That has to be embarassing for McCain when substance is being discussed.

Joyce:
Do you really want the fastest talker to be President?
You don’t think experience counts?
You don’t think backing up the words count?
Policy aside, and i know we would strenuously disagree about policy, the first hurdle should be experience.
And don’t give me the old Kennedy answer. JFK came from a long-time policical family, had been in a war, and had been a congressman a lot longer than Obama. Even so, he made mistakes that brought this country the closest it has been to destruction since the Civil War.
The closest presidential candidate in terms of qualifications was Lincoln, and obviously that turned out pretty good. But that was a one-issue campaign. The country didsn’t even have an income tax. So, I don’t find the situation comparable. The world now is too complicated for a junior senator, even one with a nice voice.
I don’t like Obama’s positions either because he is a radical and lies about it, but the first test is experience. And Obama fails the test.
Next time around, I will give Obama the benefit of some experience, but this time…the presidency isn’t a job for rookies.

“What did GW ever succeed at before getting into government? Has his Viet Nam draft dodging experience made him a good Commander in Chief?”
nonsense, liberal clap-trap.
GWB was a two-term governor of Texas, the 3rd larges state. He came from a long-time political family, had participated in prior presidency campaigns, servced honorably in the National Guard as a pilot, a prestigous position. He had experience (good and bad) in business.
Being a governor of a state is the closest experience to being President. It’s much better than being a Senator since it is an executive function.
Obamas resume is thin as a wafer. Looking good isn’t a qualification.

I don’t want the “fastest talker to be president.”
I want the person with the best judgment, someone with intelligence and some values. If the person has a lot of experience, all the better. But I know that a president does not rule alone. That is why there is a government and tasks are delegated to people with expertise in different areas.
I want someone who knows that the presidency is a responsibility given to him by the people. A president who will not bow to special interests or look after the richest people only.
If I can have a president I am proud of, a president that people look up to, then that is a bonus.

For me at least, Obama is inspiring, intelligent and charismatic. His experiences have shaped his outlook on our future…at least the potential for it. If there is anything this country needs after 8 years of Bush, it is someone who can write and state a clear and sensible message. The fact that people are listening and following is one definition of a leader. Why are so many incensed because the man can speak clearly without mangling words? We should be proud to have a candidate finally who makes the US look good again. Obama has good ideas, is creative, listens and has vision…he’s not likely to allow us to continue the Bush traditions of bungling ineptitude. I just don’t feel or sense anything exciting about a McCane presidency. One of the reasons Kennedy is considered such a great president, though he only served for three years, was his youthfulness, his character, his humor, his energy…and that is what we need now, someone that emulates that, not the dowdy, clumsy antics brought by the McCane handlers. And handlers he’ll need, because McCane’s memory is long term, not short term. McCane has too much of the wrong type of experience. He’s old school and we’ll end up with similar (far right) appointments to the Supreme Court (and they’ll likely be at least two appointments to make) and old friends to his cabinet…i.e. Rumsfeld. Though I’m not affiliated with either political party, my leanings are toward Obama…and likely my donations will go there as well, because they’ll be spent more wisely.

For all the talk of Mccain the candidate of 2000 vs Mccain the candidate of 2008, finally we know Mccain the Maverick is no more. Mccain has completely flip flop on the same issues that made him the Independent Maverick. Now Mccain is just a regular Republican that can only energize the conservative base with silly negative ads against his opponent because he can’t talk about the issues that are dear to him or about faith. Obama is the anti-Christ, when its Mccain who doesn’t go to church regulary or speak of faith. I think Mccain is already showing the wrong leadership of the country. The problem with the US of A is that we Americans should have seen this tactic a long time ago from the examples of the Nixon administration. Have you seen “Idiocracy” yet? I liken the Republicans to the people that are depicted in this movie. It’s funny and sad at the same time. We are getting “dumber and stupider” as a nation. It’s easy for other nations to see our lack of insight and disregard for logic and compassion. We are the only industrialized nation in the world that doesn’t take care of it’s people’s health and well being. There are way too many closed-minded Republicans in this country to be able to fix this nation to the way it used to be. We’ve had so many examples of how not to govern that we believe that it is the only way to govern. We are a greedy nation that believes that we are great because of our greed. That’s not what makes us great. We’ve lost our way and our founding fathers would be ashamed. Voting the Republicans out of office would be a start but that’s not going to happen. There are just too many Republicans in America that are so duped that they will never understand and nothing any intelligent person says will sway they’re pig-headed mindset. America deserves better but we can’t change because of the multitudes of bull-headed, money-grubbing, mud-slinging, rich-catering Republicans. America has it’s head up it’s butt and doesn’t even know it. David Wilson for President!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every body is calling them names like stupid, dumb blondes, and bimbo’s because Mccain threw them smack in the middle of a political campaign. Britney and Paris don’t have anything to do with politics, and now there getting more heat for the ads than Obama. Mccain is evil and I reject his leadership and his judgement. What judgement does Mccain really have when he puts out ads like this that hurts people instead of helping the country.

Not very bright to rely so heavily on polls, but keep on believing in them right up to Election Day. Anyone with some degree of intelligence knows it’s no way tied with all the issues that our country is facing, it’s just that a lot of people do not have time or patience to sit through 30 minutes of questions except maybe the older people.

The ad may have gotten Mccain tied in the polls but is say’s everything about how he did it and the kind of president he will be because he definately didn’t answer any of the questions Americans are concerned about. He doesn’t have a answer to them thats why he’s trying to distract us from the issues. Americans don’t need to be amused, we need solutions to the problems there facing.
I’m glad Mccain thinks he should run amusing ads that doesn’t solve problems, when Iran is on the urge of accomplishing nuclear weapons, Mccain may think his ads are enjoyable but our economy is on the brink of destruction, the value of our dollar is decreasing, we are in 2 wars for 7.5 years. Those ads are only going to elect the candidate that are addressing the issues and staying on message. That canidate is Obama.

I encourage current McCain supporters to rethink their votes with McCain. Come over to Obama. You are welcome to join us and let us begin turning our great country around. And remember Bin Laden & his second in command is project #1 tied with our Economy. Let’s get it together people.
Remember
1. 9-11 and the failed attempt to find Bin Laden. Along with a protracted war in Iraq.
2. Hurrican Katrina response during and after.
3. Millions of Mortgages. Subprime Crisis. Federal Reserve lowering rates to create a bubble market and then raising rates to bring it down.
4. Gas Prices. Almost to $5 a gallon.
5. Expensive healthcare is the only option for us at this point.
6. Financial crisis.
7. Stock market woes.
8. 100 yrs in Iraq? I DONT THINK SO!
9. Letting the Taliban regroup.
10.Phil Gramm (McCain’s main go to Economic Guy) said, “it’s only a mental recession”.
C’mon guys. Get real. Isn’t that enough?

Jeff: So are you from Chicago, and did YOU attend that church? If not talk what you personally know for YOURSELF, and just to prove that you are wrong, MOST churches don’t have children sitting in the audience, they are usually in a separate section. Secondly if EVERYONE knew so much about this church that obviously has been around for years, how come all this information just came out this year? Talk what you know please.

It’s sad to see people on this board say things like “McCain is evil” or “People who support Obama are ignorant”. We can have different points of view without insulting one another. We’re all Americans and all on the same team, right? If you really think that people who disagree with you are evil, you might want to just step back for a second and take inventory of the larger perspective.

Joyce – I agree with your post and this is EXACTLY why I’m not voting for McCain. He will indeed rely on a team and delegate many of his repsonsibilities – and if his campaign so far is any indication, that team will most likely be made up of the same gang of fools, incompetents and cretins that brought us the last 8 years of Republican misrule under Bush. No thanks. The GOP shouldn’t be rewarded for failure.

Before the RE bubble bursted, I had a Real Estate Portfolio of about 2.5 million dollars. Today that same folio is worth around 1 Million if I’m lucky. I make between 200,000 to $285,000 per year. Let’s say that Obama gets in and I have to cough up another 5-10K per year. SO WHAT. I would rather pay more in taxable income than to lose 60-70% of my Real Estate value under George Bush. With McCain in there. Who knows what our dollar will be worth in 4 yrs or how much lower our property values will go. I’m voting for a Dem President for the first time in my 28 yr voting history.
We do need change.

Buck: Regarding experience and judgment, a famous woman once said: “We the people recognize that the amount of time you spent in Washington means nothing unless you’re accountable for the judgments you made with the time you had”. John McCain exercised poor judgment in voting for the war in Iraq, and even had the audacity to say that he if had to do it all over again knowing that war was based on a lie he would’ve still voted the same. Sorry but people with good judgment will not vote for him.

The best defense against Schmidt/Rove/McCain offensive. Focus on the negative strategy. Use their strength (the negative campaign) against them, repeatedly.
1. The takeover is now complete. Sen. John McCain is now rund by the Schmidt/Rove/Cheneyt/Neocon/Haliburton/Swiftboat/Smear apparatus. The same team that gave us Bush, the same dirty politics, the same distractions, the same disaster awaiting the country and economy, is now in controlling the McCain campaign.
2. They know how to win Presidential campaigns. And when let loose in the Whitehouse in just 8 short years – they will also run the economy into the ground, lose 50,000 jobs per month to China and India, send billions a month in US wealth to middle east oil despots who stoke terrorism, lose prime US assets to our enemies, lead us into record national debt, the subprime crisis, Enron and more.
3. They must think we are stupid. Vote Obama and vote against Rove, Cheney and the neocons and show them that you can’t fool all the people all the time. Tell McCain it is sad that he is embracing the same dirty politics and desperate Bush stretegist that smeared McCain, his family and his adopted Bangladeshi daughter Bridget in 2000.

exactly randy, the mainstream news media is owned by defense contractors for gods sakes, do you really think they are interested in reporting facts? the more they can keep the candidates fighting and seeminly close, the more money they make from ads… and of course, it REALLY is not in corporate news infotainment (the major news outlets) to let a true progressive win the white house… they may have to re-hire legitimate and bonafide news reporters (who were all let go after 9/11) to report the ‘boring’ facts that people are so hungry for… obama won’t fix everything, and lets face it, the real change american needs will come from the ground up, but at least obama will open a few portals to the power structure of “our” government that used to be in place to represent and protect the masses, and erode some of the power it has given to big oil, and other corporate criminals

I thought it was a Republican who spent more time snuggling with the oil industry (oh yea, that has worked out really well too) in stead of listening to Clark’s “running around with his hair on fire” trying to warn any/everybody?
Why would you support a party of a president that has done more to put America at risk (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Oil…) then any other possibly in the history of America, at the very least in the last 100 years.

One more time the Republicans’ negative tactics want to win an election by distracting the American people from the real issues. McCain and his rich supporters are playing the emotional social cards to try to divide and conquer by fear. Ask yourself: can we afford to have four more years of economic pain with McCain in the White House? The last thing we need is another political experienced, rich oilman running our government into higher deficits. $492 billions for our national deficit should be the number one reason why McCain should not win. Let his rich second wife take care of him in the style he earned and probably deserves, but we need someone to look after our national interests.

Let’s see: her daughter has appeared in a porn video or two, drives drunk, has more lovers than Madonna, and does nothing but drink and go to parties…this doesn’t upset her. But being used in a political ad does. No wonder Paris is the way she is…the mom is a dolt.

I understand why mommy dislikes it, but to date it is the best ad from McCain so far.
McCain nails it, and it has nothing to do about race. It has to do about experience, or lack of it. Obama is wrong when he claims this is playing the race-card. It is Obama who plays the racist-card, which he has done before. It must be possible to attack Obama on inexperience without being branded a racist.
Sorry! But Obama is not like the other candidates. He is far to inexperience for that.

Rolland: I agree with you in every way.
If I can just expound upon that. We live in the information age. Their is no reason for people to be misinformed on the issues. You have the internet at your finger tips. Pop over to Mccains site and look at how he voted for the last 30 year and how he is all of a sudden going against every thing he has done and how he voted. The fact that the media isn’t making a big deal out of that is just another reason we know big business is in Mccains pocket. The man owes to many special interest groups to many favors to be trusted. That would be the add I would be running if I was Obama. The problem with Obama is he has to walk this really fine like Mccain can care less about. That line is hindering how aggressive he can be. That may cost Obama in the end.

This is pretty simple. For almost 8 years the greediest Republicans have been in charge of our economy and military. They have messed up both completely, but not yet irreversibly. We all need to look realistically at how bad things are now and then imagine how much worse they could get after another four years of the oil companies and energy companies and other corporations in charge. Our military is stretched much too thin, our deficit is worse than ever this year, our national debt (owed hugely by China) is out-of-control and the economy is tanking as oil and food prices rise.
All of us ordinary Americans need to vote this November for Obama and good Democrats and the few good Republicans. Our country is on its knees, another four years would be the knock-out punch. Obama has wonderful ideas that he has researched and consulted experts, not corporations, on the many problems facing our country. He is intelligent, not greedy, and can speak and write very well. Trust that most of Obama’s donations have come from many ordinary Americans making small donations. That fact alone tells you who Obama will be fighting for with Congress.
Posted by: Lydia | August 4, 2008, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm
jamesp, while we do live in the information age, unfortunately many seniors do not use the internet. Thus the polls show seniors favoring McCain. So to Obama voters out there, make sure you inform the seniors in your family and that you are friends with, what a positive difference Obama will make. I have personally changed more than a few seniors’ minds in casual conversation when I tell them that Obama wants retirees who make less than $50,000 a year to no longer pay income tax. That Obama believes people should be able to retire with dignity. And that he will give the middle-class and poor a break on their taxes by canceling the Bush tax breaks for the rich. These facts really get their attention, as seniors are as worried about themselves and their kids making ends meet as the rest of us. Seniors just need accurate information about Obama.

Why is Obama so upset With the McCain’s ad? He said it himself.

Lydia, you wrote: “And that he (Sen. Obama) will give the middle-class and poor a break on their taxes by canceling the Bush tax breaks for the rich.”
Only problem is those facts aren’t accurate. A couple making $50,000 and filing jointly will currently have a 2008 federal income tax liability of $6,698. That same couple–after the 2001 & 2003 Bush tax cuts expire–will have to pay $8,100. So just allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire will amount to a $1,402 tax increase for that couple.
Now as for Sen. Obama’s plan for retirees making less than $50,000 to no longer pay federal income tax, that is just one of the many free handouts that he plans of which, cumulatively, will bankrupt the U. S. Treasury. Sen. Obama is full of populous rhetoric and will say anything to get votes. And should he succeed and win the general election, in four years there will be some very unhappy voters. You think the anti-war, pro-impeachment crowd are upset with Congress now, that won’t come close to the anger that the mainstream electorate will have when they realize the consequences of their voting for Sen. Obama.

Let’s see, GDP has grown the past two quarters in spite of all the hits that our economy has taken. Unemployment is 5.7% (during the 7 year period of 1980-1986 we averaged 8% unemployment). And…oh yeah…no further attacks on the homeland.
It’s interesting that when our unemployment rate was at 4.7%, and we were actually taking in more revenue then spending for a couple of quarters in 2006, and we were on the way to a record 54 months of job increases, the Democrats kept talking about how bad things were in order to get re-elected. The Democrats took office on January 3, 2007, and now look where we are just 19 months later!!

HiltonsUnderstandEconomics-
Quite conveniently, you forgot to mention that the Dems don’t have a filibuster proff majority either nor do not they typically have enough votes to override presidential vetoes. So many bills to address the problems we face are not passed because the Rep minority has sufficient numbers to filibuster or prevent an override of an executive veto.

Ghost, actually I do blame the Democrats for the high energy prices. Thirty years of blocking drilling; thirty years of blocking the building of new refineries; thirty years of blocking the building of nuclear plants; thirty years of not allowing us to increase our supply of domestic oil.
Sorry but you are completely wrong about the U. S. Senate. There are 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 Independants who vote with the Democrats. So the Democrats ARE in control. They control the agenda…they control the committees…and they control what can come up for a vote. So yes, the Democrats are in control.

The problem with your scenario is Obama is not talking about letting the Bush tax cuts expire for incomes less than $250,000
Fact checking shows that a taxpayer making $50,000 will fair better (less tax) under
Obama’s plan than McCain’s

This is to Kathy Hilton. I don’t think the ad was attacking your daughter or Brittany. It was simply portraying Obama as a celebrity as is Paris and Brittany. I’m sorry you took it that way.

Grace – I watched Obamas’ town hall meeting today. An African American man asked – How do you propose to pay for the $1000 stimulus? Obama proceeded to attack Bush for everything under the sun but never gave this man an answer to his question. I’ve observed this to be the case more times than not. I’ve also watched McCain in his town hall meetings and the same does NOT apply. He may not always give the answer we want to hear but gives an answer just the same.

AnotherLaura, I am not an expert in Congressional precedures or protocol. However, I do not believe that Congress can cherry pick which parts of a law can be allowed to expire and then extend other portions. I believe that a completely new law must be written.
The Washington Post Fact Checker (June 2008) states the following: “According to Obama’s new economics adviser, Jason Furman, the revenues raised from letting the tax cuts expire will be returned to middle and low-income tax payers in the form of tax credits to pay for health insurance, so the overall effect will be revenue neutral.”
I understand that to mean that the actual tax liability for a couple making $50,000 and filing jointly WILL have a tax liability of $8,100–as I previously stated–when the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire (at the end of 2010). Then according to Sen. Obama’s plan (as explained by Jason Furman), apparently, this couple will at some point receive the difference between THAT amount and the LESSER amount that they would have had to pay had the Bush tax cuts been still in effect in the form of a tax credit for health insurance. It certainly would be a lot easier to just let the Bush tax cut remain, and let the couple choose what they want to do with the difference–like paying for gas.

worried about safety – Flash news we have already been attacked on on American soil, remember 911. If we get attacked again, which we will, it will be because the Bush administration has laid the ground work for an attack.

I thought the ad was good. But I thought the Moses ad was a scream. These ads are not negative at all. THe Obama campaign can’t even take a joke. And, the tire gauge with “Obama’s Energy Plan” was even more hilarious. I like the ribbing. Keep it up McCain. Lighten up Obama people, you all are so thin skinned.

The Republicans and their useful idiots, the little Republicans (those who make less than $200,000 a year and who supports the Republicans), and the really pathetic useful idiots (those that are having a hard time making ends meet and who supports the Republicans) call Democrats thin skinned when they dare object to ridiculous comparison/association of an honorable man to someone of a questionable moral character. But mention something that is very true and relevant about their candidate and they blow a gasket and scream bloody murder (man…talk about whiners and ball-babies). If the Republicans cheat again this time around, and they get their man elected, I think we will have to worry about more turmoil in this country than what could ever be worried about from some external threats. Four more years of another Bush-like creature in the White House will put most of all of us in the Poor House….Naomi Kline’s book “The Shock Doctrine” shows how the the US manipulated other countries, like Chile, to force Friedmanism,neo-liberalism, and neo-conservatism on their economic structures. That failed miserably on their economies making a few people extremely rich in a very short time, bankrupting the rest of the country. That is what is happening here in the US. You want civil unrest? Without the hope that someone like Obama will turn us around, this country may see violence coming from it’s own citizens. And Obama had better turn us around! McCain will only keep us on the same track of economic misery and continued new, needless war crimes against the rest of the world. You want Nazi-like privatized corporations, like Blackwater, jack-booting through the streets of the US? Vote McCain and see what happens!!!

Palindromedary, you paint a very dark picture only because the Liberal Left has been feeding you garbage for too long. Yes we are in a down turn economically. But things are nowhere near as bleak as you and the Liberal Left portray it. In fact, in 2006 the Democrats ran on how “terrible” our economy was. At that time our unemployment was 4.7%. At that time, we were in the middle of a record 54 consecutive months of job growth. AND at that time we actually had two quarters where we took in more revenue than we spent. YET to listen to the Democrats and Liberals back then, you would have thought we were in a recession. BUT now–even though we are not technically in a recession–to listen to you and the other Democrats and Liberals, you would think we were back in 1929. Give me a break.
Finally, the Republican’s did NOT cheat to win the elections in 2000 or 2004. No matter how long and how loud you and the Liberal Left shout it…it is still NOT true. Get over it already…we won back then; and looking at the current polls have about a 45% shot at winning the White House again this November.

To James Danley: I paint a bleak picture because it is bleak. We are not better off than we were 8 years ago because of the terrible policies of the Bush administration. I think most people, now, will agree…and you are in the minority. There was indisputable proof, and now well known by everyone that is not blinded by their continued obstinance (usually those who listen to Fox News), that election cheating by Republicans took place which put Bush into the White House. Your man, Bush, will eventually, hopefully, be brought up on charges of war crimes. In my book, all of you continued supporters of the war criminal right wing should be hauled up before a criminal court. Then I’ll “get over it”!

The reason why 200,000 people turned up in Berlin to see Obama was because they felt something good about America in his visit. I don’t think Bush or Mccain could raise 10% of that number on a foreign visit. Wake up all you Bush/Mccain lovers, even the rest of the world sees what America needs, why can’t we?

Madonna is another celebrity who may be successful in the fantasy world of show business and flaunting herself, but when it comes to politics, she is an airhead. Furthermore … John McCain has not only proved himself with over 40 years of service to America, but when he was a prisoner in Hanoi, and he was given the chance of early release, and he chose to stay … out of honor and love of America, even though it meant years of additional captivity and torture, it showed remarkable integrity and character … something Madonna doesn’t even recognize … let alone acknowledge. Madonna’s comparison of John McCain to Adolph Hitler is a travesty … and another example of how these spoiled celebrities who support Obama, enjoy the benefits and sacrifices made by others, while these ingrates trash American heros like McCain who suffered to insure their freedoms and opportunities.
