Pawlenty Continues Tire Gauge Critique of Obama

ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Minnesota Gov. and prospective GOP vice presidential nominee Tim Pawlenty continued criticism of Sen. Barack Obama’s energy policies in an RNC conference call this evening, saying Obama has misunderstood the energy crisis, and is now "scrambling to make up for his lack of judgment" on the issue. "I don’t think he has a compass when it comes to this issue. He’s obviously thrashing about to catch up to the idea of the week," he said of Obama’s energy plan outlined on Monday. "We’re glad he’s migrated more and more to Sen. McCain’s position and vision for a better energy future. But it’s obviously belated, it’s obviously half-hazard." Pawlenty again hit Obama for his advice to a voter last week to to fully inflate their tires as a way to conserve fuel, saying it was an ineffective substitute for measures such as offshore oil drilling, expanding nuclear energy, and a gas tax holiday. Pawlenty introduced a tire gauge as a prop during a speech at an Ames, Iowa GOP campaign headquarters opening on Saturday — a prop Sen. John McCain’s campaign has embraced in its criticisms of Obama’s energy policies this week. "This icon of the tire pressure gauge is important," Pawlenty said. "Having tires properly inflated helps a little bit but that is not nearly anything close to the broad and comprehensive approach we need." Obama disputed the charge at a town hall meeting in Berea, Ohio today. "They’re making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant," Obama said. "You know, they think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework." But beyond the tire pressure issue, Pawlenty said Obama should call on the Democratic leadership to return to Washington to address off-shore drilling. "Rather than talking about tire gauges, which is helpful to a small degree, he should be using his relationship with the Democratic leaders of Congress, Nancy Pelosi and the Senate leader, to get Congress to reconvene and deal with these issues in a crisis session this summer," Pawlenty said. Pawlenty has served as a leading surrogate for the McCain campaign and continues to be at the top of the Republican nominee’s prospective vice presidential list. Pawlenty will speak at the National Press Club in Washington, DC tomorrow on the topic of "’Sam’s Club Republicans’ and how the Republican Party can achieve success by addressing the needs of this group of voters."

Totally Agree! It seems that Obama is always trying to catch up with McCain’s ideas….just proves that Obama is an “empty suit with no substance!”

What does a govenor know about washington politics anyway. Perhaps Pawlenty ought to let me show him how to use this tire gauge–I know of a perfectly good area that it would fit on him !!!

If everyone in this country actually used one of those little republicon props we would save the same amount of oil as McCain figures we can drill out of the ground. Obama says ignorant, I say willfully stupid, it’s a republicon gene that makes em that way.

Posted by: Brandon | August 5, 2008, 9:22 pm 9:22 pm

The 3 or 4% being quoted only applies if NOBODY has their tyres properly inflated and engines not tuned.
If everybody already has, the savings are exactly nil
If as one would suspect the numbers fall between the two extremes, then you would have to accurately know those numbers to make any predictions, and nobody knows them.
If you arbitarily guessed at 50% then you would have to half the figures the Obama camp is quoting.
This sort of positioning major policy on rubbery figures (to use a pun!)is exactly what worries so many of us world wide about the alarmist human’s causing global warming claims.
This isnt pragmatic policy its warm inner glow rhetoric at best, dangerous dreaming at worst.

Pawlenty is back-pedaling on this issue. Air pressure would be a good thing to advise motorists. Since we don’t have a real leader in the White House maybe President Obama will have some influence.
From Time Magazine: Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right.
I’m still trying to figure out why mccain confused the Packers with the Steelers last month while speaking to a Pittsburgh crowd. He said he used the names of the famous Steelers Defensive line of the 1970′s while being interrogated, too bad these guys weren’t even playing when mccain was being interrogated. He is either going senile or he was trying to pull one over on the Pittsburgh crowd, either way this is BAD news for mc-more-war. You can check out the article by going into google and typing “mccain steelers” and picking the first link.

David from Texas –Well it’s interesting that all the experts agree that inflating tires can save 3-4% of our gas usage! As for McCain actually having an energy plan, he wants drilling, which the oil companies can do now! They have millions of leases for off shore drilling rights! They want the rest so there is no competion which means we are at the mercy of their pricing! His other plan which was rather funny when he spoke about it was a call for more nuclear plants. He spoke about that at a plant that had a melt down…You and your ilk do nothing but find fault. I have asked this numerous times, WHAT IS MCCAINS PLAN FOR HEALTH CARE, THE ECONOMY, ENERGY besides things that benefit the oil companies! You do know McCain hasn’t been to a senate vote since April, why wasn’t he there fighting for this plan he thinks is so good? You really should attempt to educate yourselves before making comments…

Posted by: try the truth | August 5, 2008, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm

Pawlenty, the Governor who vetoed a tax increase that would have repaired the bridges of his state — one that then collapsed and killed 14 people — is talking about good judgment.
I find that laughable and the comments above just plain stupid.
First, Obama’s energy plan is much more developed than McCain’s drill, drill, drill plan that won’t give us any oil for 10 years.
Second, just what does McCain who hasn’t been back to Congress in months expect them to do about the energy crisis in two weeks when the Administration (that McCain supported 90 percent of the time)hasn’t done in almost eight years.
Best of all McCain was offering up his wife at the biker rally today in South Dakota.
The price of oil when Bush came in office was $27 a barrel, today it was $120 and the only reason the price hasn’t gone up lately is because the dollar is so weak.

Posted by: linda n carolina | August 5, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

Mr. Paw-lenty (is plenty lame). Only a fool would keep talking against facts establishd many years ago.
Every study made to date concludes that proper air pressure in tires, conserves gas and extends tire life.
In case they don’t know it, tires are petroleum also. How sad these guys are.
America is not as dumb as they think.
Make them pay across the board for insulting our intelligence. Vote democratic in every state, send all of them home without a job.

Posted by: Lou | August 5, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

Remember the Enron scandal and the phony energy crisis. Here we go again.
The GOP, Gas and Oil party, does not discuss reducing consumption.
Americans use about 380 million gallons of gasoline a day.
Obama was asked what individuals can to save on gas. He gave couple of suggestions. Properly inflate tires and make the car is tuned up. Its estimated this would reduce our gasoline consumption by around 20 million gallons a day. A barrel of crude yields 19.5 gallons of gasoline. So we are looking at a savings 1 millon barrels a day.
The DOE estimates that the outer continent shelf will yield and extra 200,000 barrels a day by 2030.
So Americans have a choice, check your tire pressure, and make sure your car is tune up, or do nothing.
McCain blamed Obama for the rise in gasoline prices. So now we can credit Obama for the drop.
Obama’s plunged two days in a row thanks to Obama. Look for lower gasoline prices in the weeks to come.
The thing to do now is call on Bush to reduce the strategic oil reserves by 10% 70 million barrels.

Posted by: geevill | August 5, 2008, 9:38 pm 9:38 pm

It certainly takes a lot more than just a oil lease to start drilling. There is permit, after permit, after permit that has to be applied for and approved, there are environmental impact studies and statements, there are lawsuits by environmentalist and others, there needs to be a transportation system to get the oil to a refinery for processing. And the bottom line is–there must be enough oil there to make it worthwhile considering the costs.
Senator Obam’a plan is only a half plan at best. McCain has stated all energy sources should be developed. It has been the democrats and environmental people blocking more oil production in the US for years.

Obama made sense on the tire guage suggestion. However, the Republicans may still be right that that is a solution which is indicative of someone with big ideas to help America with big problems. Obama is NOT that person.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) says that for every pound of pressure your tires are under-inflated, you lose 2% of mileage on your car….And the United States Department of Transportation states that approximately 25% of all commuters are driving a few pounds short of full pressure. Do the math.
Anyone arguing against these facts IS truly “ignorant”. No wonder this country’s economy is in the condition it’s in. People can’t even see the truth when it’s staring them in their ignorant faces.

I laugh and laugh at you Obama supporters for grasping at straws to claim that Obama was right! LOL! YES, it is true that properly inflated tires will help, but that is not what he said; he specifically said that by doing that, we can replace our dependence on off shore drilling. It was an illinformed, uneducated, and ignorant statement. THAT is the issue, and that is the one that he has been trying to back track. He is now trying to call his opponents ignorant, but he is the one who said it!
Why do you think he is now flipping on offshore drilling, if inflating tires was all you needed to do? And if inflating tires was all we needed to do, that was in our power all along, why haven’t we done it, and we won’t need to buy oil from Iran anymore?????
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: tadow | August 5, 2008, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

He said something as simple as properly inflating tires could replace the NEW proposed offshore drilling. He never said it could replace existing offshore drilling. THAT is the issue.
In addition, he NEVER said that was all people needed to do. As far as why American commuters haven’t done it. Perhaps that’s because the average American is ignorant.

One of the first things Pawlenty did when he became governor was take away health insurance to some state employees. Now he wants to comment on Obama. Take it from someone who lives up north where he is governor. The man is a self-righteous Christian who thinks it’s ok to deny health insurance to state employees if they don’t believe as he does. Exxon had profits of 11 billion last quarter and Sen. McCain wants to give them a way to make more.
Of shore drilling will benefit the American people very little.
The big winners will again be the oil companies.
And with all this profit do you think big oil will lower the price of gas?
FAT CHANCE!

Once again, Obama did NOT say anything earth shattering! YOu supporters never cease to amaze me, doing everything you can to amplify what he say, or thought he said! So, he says the obvious about inflating tires (which, again, will NOT replace the oil from offshore drilling). So, if he were to say, “turn off your water while you brush your teeth”, I suppose you would proclaim he has solved global warming???
Get this straight. What he said about inflating your tires is not wrong, it was just simple minded and ignorant, to even suggest that will solve our energy crisis. If it was so easy, why hasn’t it been done in the past 50 years, and why are we in this energy predicament? You can’t solve problems with words, and stupid words at that.

BO answered the question truthfully, and what did McSame do?…criticize it and suggest we build more nuclear power plants when we still have NO way of dealing with the nuclear waste but to burry it in the dirt and hope in the future someone will come up with a solution to nuetralize it. Posted by: Paul | August 6, 2008, 9:13 am 9:13 am

As usual, the Republicans can only focus on one thing at a time. Cue the shiny object… and now its a tire gauge. The fact is that not only have the DOT and AAA and NASCAR all been pushing us recently to keep our tires properly inflated to save gas but the savings across the board would be 4 times the savings of all of the known reserves of oil offshore. The Republicans claim “all of the above” when they talk about energy policy but NEVER mention Conservation. You’ll notice that gas prices are down because in California ALONE, drivers have reduced their miles driven by 9 million miles over the same period last year. Supply… meet lower demand. Economics 101 my friend. If we want to immediately have an affect on gas prices, we must use LESS of the product. In the long term, conservation also works.

Obama is on the right track calling for Americans to keep tires properly inflated.
Americans CAN do something about the energy crisis. With everyone working together to solve the problem, even something that seems little, like proper tire inflation, can grow to a savings of $ 14 billion a year, which doesn’t seem small at all.
Tires will stay properly inflated even longer with high-purity nitrogen.
High-purity nitrogen is more stable than compressed air. This allows tires to stay properly inflated longer and leads to increased gas mileage, improved tire life and reduced carbon emissions. High-purity nitrogen also can provide a safer ride, with better handing and stability.

Obama the Empty Suit says:
“They’re making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama said. “You know, they think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”
The only Ignorant Candidate on Energy
is Obama!
Obama said that inflating our tires
would be equal to the amount of oil
we would get from allowing
off-shore drilling!
How in heavens name does Obama or anyone else know how much oil is in these areas if we have yet to drill there?
He has since flipped on his position and now says he might favor some
off-shore drilling!
However if Obama’s statement about
inflating our tires is true, then why
allow any off-shore drilling since according to Obama the results would
be miniscule?
Obama has morphed into Bill Clinton!
He’ll say and do whatever it takes to win the election! New kind of politics
indeed! Just Say No to Obama!
No You Can’t!

I really wonder if the Gov. or Sen. “McSame” have ever used a tire guage. I’m sure they don’t really concern themselves with such trivial things. People in the know say that by keeping your tire pressure where at the level suggested we would save fuel. I also want to comment on Sen. McCain’s visit to the grocery a couple of weeks ago. Considering he is the son of an Admiral, a United States Senator, & the husband of a wealthy woman, does anyone really think that he has ever been asked to stop at the grocery and pick up a gallon of milk on his way home from the office? Most likely never happened. He looked about as out of palce in that grocery store as I would look sitting on the Senate floor. Give us all a break. We need someone with enrgy and enthusiasm to lead this country. It may not be Sen. Obama, but it certainly is not Sen. “McSame”.

“No. You do YOUR homework. It’s not my math. It’s the math of the US Department of Transportation and AAA.
People can’t even see the truth when it’s staring them in their ignorant faces.”
—————————————-
Okay I did the math…If 25% of the population has tires underinflated by “a couple of PSI” (which is the same as 50% being underinflated by 1 PSI) and each PSI under eequals 2% loss in efficiency, then we’ll save a whopping 1% of the overall available efficiency by inflating tires. Just 1%. (I’m already doing it myself) But those calling others ignorant have to realize that it won’t get us off Middle Eastern oil (as Obama stated), or make up for what we could gain by drilling offshore or in ANWAR. I’m all for alternative energy and conservation, but how about doing “everything” we can to improve things including drilling. There will be an immediate effect on oil prices (as Bush’s removal of the executive ban against offshore drilling revealed by causing oil prices to drop $10 in one day of the announcement).
This is America, why limit ourselves to so few options when we can do it all?

Obama’s support of the Bush/Cheney energy bill in 2005 versus McCain’s opposition to the same bill is evidence enough that Obama is not in touch with what America needs for an energy policy.

Hey Keith:
If the federal and state gas taxes we
pay at the pump are for repairs of
bridges and roads why did Pawlenty
have to approve an additional tax
increase to prevent the road collapse
in Minnesota? Where is this tax money
going to?
There needs to be an investigation or at least an accounting in every state
in this country as to where this
gas tax money is going and who is spending it and for what!
We don’t need new taxes!
We need to find out where our tax money
is going!

The word you are looking for is haphazard, not half-hazard. It’s from hap meaning “chance, luck” + hazard meaning “risk, danger, peril”.
