Plouffe Responds to Criticism of Temple Obama: ‘Criticism Is Very Small in an Election That’s Very Big’

In an interview with ABC News, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe responded to criticism of the Greek columns on the stage where Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will give his speech this evening.

"I think President Bush’s backdrop at his convention had columns right behind him," Plouffe noted. "We are going to have American flags behind Barack Obama, 80,000 people celebrating their democracy waving American flags tonight. So, it is going to be a wonderful moment in our democracy.  And we think the criticism is very small in an election that is very big, and people understand, has big stakes associated with it."

The convention floor is far too small for Obama.
You do not see Bono appearing at a tiny venue, do you?

Greek columns are fine by me. Greece was the original democracy.
McCain’s ads often quote the “Review Journal.” Who owns the “Review Journal”?

I think it is stellar..
The young people especially will rally around this event as it is history making.
Whatever happens after this we for one night will be watching with unbridled pride … this is what memories are made of.
As a very young girl I had the opportunity to see Marilyn Monroe sing Happy birthay to JFK…something one never forgets.
Tonight in America we will bear witness to the first
African American male to accept the nomination for the opportunity to be the POTUS.
As a white female I am proud to see this. No matter what your politics are this is pretty wonderful. The United States of America after 200+ years is finally coming to a new day.
I loved Hillary and thought she would be the nominee and I like Obama and McCain …still not sure who I will vote for …but …tonite is going to be a stellar event.
Let’s try to stay positive about whomever we are voting for and just enjoy this moment in our history.

Speaking of flags. Were the flags at last nights gathering made in the USA?
My TV has pretty poor resolution but it looked like there were two different flags distributed to the crowd.
One, had the flag stapled to the stick. If the flag was cotton thats usually a clue that it was made in Philly.
The other though, looked as if the flag had a sleeve that went over the stick, usually a hallmark of a made in China flag
any one know?

It is a game the campaigns play. Try to get a buzz going on for some little criticism, and then bring it to the notice of the networks. Maybe it gets mentioned in the news blogs, or if they’re lucky, the news anchors are soon talking about how “some say” that Obama having greek columns in the stadium means that he is too _______ (fill in the blank: elitist/ethnic/arrogant).
And what started out as a partisan smear has somehow become “news.”

joel, greek democracy was an illusion. most city-states were monarchy, and even in athens, only about 30% of people had voteing rights.

Large stadiums are tough places to give a speech.
Too much crowd noise, too much audio feedback…lag in sound.
I hope they let loose white doves when he appears on stage.
And lots of confetti.
Maybe even Al Gore dancing.

I actually think that the back drop is very nice when it is lit up at night.
It is an historic night on the 45th anniversary of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
How far we have come as a country. I never would have thought this would happen in my life time.

are you kidding me??? i did my graduate work in GREECE … and spent a great deal of time at temple sites across the country.
the pictures i have seen online of the stage looks NOTHING like Greek temples! temples don’t have windows or window panes. and the layout and shape of the stage is defintitely not-temple like.
one could TRY to argue that the structure appears more like the Roman Vittorio monument….but even that’s a STRETCH.
the backdrop looks much more like it the design period that influenced the Lincoln memorial.
regardless, doric columns do not a greek temple make. people need to stop being ridiculous.

wrytoby…
“joel, greek democracy was an illusion. most city-states were monarchy, and even in athens, only about 30% of people had voteing rights.”
True, but that doesn’t refrute my point. Greece is the origin of the idea of democracy, regardless of how well executed it was. For most of the history of the States, we have not done a good job of being inclusive in our democratic principles. How long did it take women to gain the right to vote? How long did it take African Americans to gain the right–without “grandfather” clauses?

Isn’t it bizarre for someone to criticize an opposing Presidential candidate because TOO MANY people are interested in hearing what they have to say in person?

Posted by: Ed | August 28, 2008, 6:41 pm 6:41 pm

They are saying they wouldn’t have gone this route but this was planned before Bozo’s debacle in Germany….where he lured 200,000 young people with a free concert by the #1 selling German rock band and reggae performers and beer and flags AND COULDN’T FIND TIME TO VISIT OUR WOUNDED BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE NO PHOTO OP!
THAT was a debacle and this will be too.
I would relish a more humble, honest and straightforward Convention from Republicans next week…this is Government and not Show Biz Industry. Brittany Spears set guys worked on this too…..REALLY THE WRONG WAY TO GO FOR OBAMA CAMPAIGN.

The columns do not concern me. What does concern me is the location of the speech. Only entertainers, the pope and Billy Graham fill up venues like this one. Helps to have big name performers and being free helps. Wanting to learn what BHO might offer the country I have watched the convention a great deal. Including today all I hear is Bush, McCain basing and for 4 days the dem. regurgitate over and over again the some comments.

Why talk about issues when you can make inane and nonsensical jokes about grecian columns!
The Repubs on this board reflect the ignorance of the McSame campaign, and the idiocy of the last eight years of Bush/Cheney.
Thankfully, in just over two months, all that will be over when Barack Obama is elected as our next POTUS!!!

Folks,
while you guys are making fun about columns, Iraq has signed a huge oil deal with China….you know China, the country that America is in debt to….while Americans foot the bill.
Putin has just called out the Bush administration speaking truth to power –that the administration provoked the Georgians into starting war for McCain’s political gain.
So we are talking about Columns while America is beginning to look a little lonely in the world with our credibility nearly nonexistent.

How is Obama going to connect with the average American if they don’t trust him
first?
He can’t change his extreme abortion record.
He can’t change his past associates. The average swing voters (like me)aren’t going to ignore Rev Wright, Ayers, Rezko, and the lame excuses he gave.
This obviously doesn’t matter to his supporters but it matters to millions of us.
What could Obama possibly say tonight to make us feel different about him?
He’s preaching to the choir tonight.

You morons, the columns are to evoke the Lincoln Memorial. You should be ashamed of your knowledge of the context and ashamed or you ridicule an attempt to honor perhaps the greatest Republican President there ever was.
The context is the “I have a dream speech” and the implication is that the dream is about to be fulfilled.
Until this election I have been a Republican my entire voting life but it is “Lord of the flies” types like you that have pushed me to Obama.

Posted by: Mr. Coffee | August 28, 2008, 7:41 pm 7:41 pm

The fact that Mr. Plouffe had to defend the venue at all means they felt vulnerable to MAC’s attacks. There has been entirely too much defensiveness on the part of the Obama campaign lately. Heads up, all is not as it should be. And what needs to be fixed isn’t going to be fixed by Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and not Joe Biden. Obama needs to find his courage again, stop listening to everyone, and start getting real. And start showing the Hillary hold-outs you care about them more than just for their votes.

A lot of military personnel plan to get out as soon as possible if Obama is elected. Main reason (besides Obama’s lack of experience) is that Obama plans major cuts in national defense. Clinton cut defense spending way back and that is why we got caught short with personnel and supplies when 911 occurred. Would you want your son or daughter serving under those conditions? I think not. Latest polls suggest overwhelming support for McCain over Obama re. national defense.

Is Plouffe certain he wants to compare Obama to Bush? Is Obama certain that the Mile High Stadium is big enough for his ego? Did a funny thing happen on the way to the Forum? Will there bare-breasted vestal virgins dancing on bulls, toga clad young men standing guard at Temple Barack? Why are 4,000 applauding Democratic delegates not enough for Obama’s narcissism?
What stands out in Plouffe’s remark is that Obama and Bush have similar personalities.

The entire DNC convention has been a very undemocratic farce.
Who does Obama think he is, King of the World?
I am ashamed to call myself a Democrat today.
The Dems have very foolishly, very undemocratically, with the assistance of a 24/7 media promotion of Obama for a year and half, nominated the wrong candidate(s).
Obama-Biden is a loser. Obama is neither qualified or electable.
Obama is no JFK, RFK, or MLK.
What would Martin Luther King, who is being channelled by Barack Obama tonight, think of Obama’s efforts to disenfranchise voters and subvert democracy? Not much, I bet.
The entire nomination process is a farce that needs an overhaul. It’s most certainly NOT democratic and does not represent the voters of the Democratic party base who want Hillary to be the nominee, not have Obama shoved down our throats.
Hillary should be the nominee. Hillary could win this election in a walk.
It’s McCain 08 and Hillary 2012.
Country first, party second.

We’re talking something more concrete than polls. We’re talking donations.
Soldiers are sending their hard earned cash to Obama
See the FEC records for yourself.
Although 59 percent of federal contributions by military personnel has gone to Republicans this cycle, of money from the military to the presumed presidential nominees, 57 percent has gone to Obama.
Obama beats McCain by a 6 to 1 margin when it comes to troops that were deployed abroad when they made their donation.
The military knows Obama has the judgement to be their commander in chief.

But it is such a remarkable fact that it does bear repeating
Obama has received 57% of donations by military personnel out of all the donations to Presidential candidates.

Maybe our troops don’t see it as a success when they’ve been stop-lossed and on their 4th tour away from home.
Maybe they don’t see it as a sucesss when they’ve had to bury their buddies or realize the best chance of actually coming home is to be horrifically maimed.
Maybe they don’t see it as a sucess having to make do with shoddy equipment while our government throw away billions in no bid contracts to Republican cronies.

There is one piece of evidence people in the military support BHO. Why do Dems ignore and denigrate the hundreds of events indicating the reverse is true?
If the military supports BHO why do Dems routinely try to make it difficult for the military to vote?
Why do Dems declare we need to leave Iraq because it is an unwinnable civil war only to promote the use of US troops in civil wars in Afghanistan and Darfur?
Why does BHO declare he will scrap our abm missile defense just when Iran announces a successful ballistic missile test?
Why are Dems often the first to criticize the whole military when a few men do unlawful things and/or state the military is for losers who can’t make it in civilian life?
Why do Dems often repeat enemy propaganda about our troops before any evidence is known?
Why are Dems the first to declare a war is lost when it isn’t?
Why don’t the Dems actually LISTEN to our military commanders and support them instead of just dictating what they will do as in BHO’s last trip to the Middle East?

The women and the other junk of voters who are are feeling so disenfranchised with the Democrat party will be doing our part to get John McCain elected. It was bad enough years ago when the right wing of the Democratic party were attacking the Clintons. But, this year when the left wing did it it was the last straw. For being such a bright guy, Obama didn’t exercise very good judgement, because he alienated a big block of voting women, who will never vote for him now. And, the sad thing is, before he opened up his big mouth and insulted Hillary Clinton and than ran down Bill Clinton, he had us in the palm of his hand and he blew it. This is what happens when the ego gets the best of the person. He deserves to lose and I hope he loses big time to MCCain just so I can see the look on his puss and his wife’s face. I wonder if they will think of how Hillary must have felt. Oh no, they’ll just feel so wronged and victimized. They’re a joke. It’s fitting that they come from Illinois and Chicago because he is like a Boss Tweed!

Mary Anne this country can’t afford to have another republican just because you want revenge. People are losing their homes with this ecomony. And it won’t get better with McCain.

Ryan,
If they are so upset with stop loss why has the military had record re-enlistments?
Why do you say the best chance of actually coming home from Iraq is to be horrifically maimed when you are more likely to be murdered in Washington DC, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit or Los Angeles than in Iraq?
Why was one of the biggest winners of no bid contracts none other than Diane Feinstein’s husband while SHE was in charge of awarding them? Oh, did you know she is a Democrat?
Why did BHO state we should stop targeting and killing civilians with our aircraft? Does he REALLY think we target civilians on purpose?
Maybe BHO would be a good Commander in Chief, no one knows at this point. I just hope we never have to find out.

ZZ, Did you know we have a LOT more homeowners than when Clinton left office?
Did you know the census this week reported the number of unemployed dropped by over one MILLION people over the last year and that incomes for the average person INCREASED?
Did you know last quarter the economy GREW by over 3% and that we haven’t had a SINGLE down quarter in years?
Did you know that more people are employed now than at any time in our countries history?

Davei,
Who knows the troops motivations?
I gave some possible reasons in response to someone calling them stupid.
The fact remains the troops have donated more money to Barack Obama than John McCain and in the case of troops donating while deployed overseas that ratio was 6 to 1.

Mary Ann: “Oh no, they’ll just feel so wronged and victimized.”
After a comment whining about how you have been wronged and victimized, this accusation loses some of it sting.

“Did you know the census this week reported the number of unemployed dropped by over one MILLION people over the last year and that incomes for the average person INCREASED?”
Did you know that report was for last year and that is show incomes just now returning to the levels of 2000?
Did you know that just 3 weeks ago unemployment claims for the week hit a high not seen since 2002? That the total number of people drawing unemployment benefits just 10 days ago was the most since Nov 2003?
“Did you know last quarter the economy GREW by over 3% and that we haven’t had a SINGLE down quarter in years?”
Did you know that 2005 to 2007 was the 1st economic recovery in which the American family LOST earning power?
Did you know that GDP is not the sole indicator for the strength of America’s economy?

Davei, it’s not just the economy. I’m concerned about the Supreme Court plus I want more stem cell research. I was trying to point out to Mary Anne that to vote out of revenge is no way to vote.

“Why do you say the best chance of actually coming home from Iraq is to be horrifically maimed when you are more likely to be murdered in Washington DC, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit or Los Angeles than in Iraq?”
242 US soldiers have died in Iraq this year with nearly 1500 injured.
Over 4600 members of the Iraqi defense forces and civilians have also been killed.

When will BO stop flapping his gums about “…if that’s how John McCain feels, that’s a debate I’d love to have……”? He’s run from every debate since HRC kicked his butt the last time. Chicken!

Looks like Ryan cannot differentiate between reality and what he wishes to be true. “Families with children are jamming the city parks of Baghdad on weekends.” oil at 2.54 million barrels/day. Surge HAS worked. BO WRONG ON ALL COUNTS. Military For BO? Doesn’t make sense in the light of all our successes in Iraq!!!

Posted by: Temagami | August 28, 2008, 10:51 pm 10:51 pm

Why won’t BO come on the Factor? Bill has extended invitation MANY TIMES!! WHAT IS HE AFRAID OF?? McCain will go into the lions den to go after votes. Obama WILL NOT!! BILL IS TOUGH, BUT FAIR, SAYS HILLARY!!! IS BO CHICKEN, OR WHAT!!

ZZ The Supreme Court justices BHO prefers endorse the taking of homes from individuals if the state, county or city can generate more tax revenue than the current property owners pay. Thus if a developer can put in expensive condos, expensive homes or retail shops on your land, your home, you lose it all whether you want to or not. Do you believe people should be forced out to maximize gov revenue?
The justices BHO picked believe the constitution can be changed not only by a vote of the people as is stated within the document but also whenever 4 justices agree something should be changed. No need for precedent. No need for any vote of the people. To them the constitution is a “living, breathing document” that can be changed only by them any time they like.
Some of these justices have also said they can base new laws not upon our US Constitution but on a foreign law where they can cherry pick the country. Do you agree with this as well?
Both candidates favor stem cell research. Did you know Bush funded more than any other president?

Keep thinking that it does not mean anything when Emperor Obama shows his arrogance and contempt for anybody that is not black or rich ,and you will still be clueless in November when McCain wins.
The problem with Emperor Obama`s campaign is that he keeps forgetting that our hands are not tied like Hillary`s and our voices and critisizm are not censored by the DNC. We are free to think, do and say as we want, and Obama and the DNC do not have any control over us the way they did Hillary.
As long as Obama and company keep underestimating us and acting like we are as stupid as he is , We will have McCain in office in November and Hillary in 2012.
They were able to Control Hillary through threats and extortion, and are stupid enough to think that she has control over us the way they have control over their cult following.
Nobody has any control over us and nobody can force us to vote for Obama through threats and extortion the way they did Hillary.
We own and control our own votes and will give them to anybody we please. Unfortunatly for Obama they will not be going to him just because he has a Dream. I have lots of Dreams and Obama is not in any of them.
Keep fooling yourselves and underestimating us Hillary supporters all the way to McCain and November.
NOWAY NOHOW NOBAMA

Ryan In WW2 3,000 died in one training exercise. 6,000 died in one day invading Tunisia. We had over 500,000 casualties in ONE battle, the Battle of the Bulge.
Al Qaida sent 19-20 people into the US for the 9/11 attacks. They sent over 20,000 into Iraq to fight our troops. They now have less than 2,000 and are getting kicked around worse each day. They lost over 18,000 men. Iraq fighting forces are getting better each month and expect to take over most if not all the fighting by July of next year.
What would the US look like today if Al Qaida had sent those same 20,000 into the US to kill and cause havoc. What if they sent 5,000 or even 500?
Do you remember what just 2 snipers did on the east coast and the damage and fear they caused?
Our military, our foreign intelligence services and our diplomacy in getting other countries to assist us, are the 3 main reasons we have not been attacked since 9/11.
