Politifact Finds Obama’s Tire-Inflation ClaimTrue

Our friends at Politifact have also looked into Sen. Barack Obama’s claim about tire inflation and found it to be true — not merely that car tune-ups and proper tire inflation will save millions of barrels of oil per year, but that it will save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.

No one knows for sure, of course, which may be one of the reasons why our experts disagreed with Obama’s claim that this conservation method would save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.

But the salient point is that such measures are serious. Why the Republicans are mocking them at a time of energy crisis seems bizarre.

We’re also reminded of this news from 1990:

"The Washington Times, September 14, 1990…The Bush administration yesterday launched an advertising blitz telling Americans they could fight oil shortages and high gas prices by conserving, while advising Congress there is no sign of price gouging by the oil industry and that gas prices are ‘not unreasonable.’ The slogan for the yearlong campaign, ‘Do Your Part, Drive Smart,’ tells consumers they can save more than 7 million gallons of gasoline a day if they keep their tires properly inflated, drive slower and join car pools.

Said Energy Secretary James D. Watkins: "The president has called upon Americans to do their part ‘to conserve. Our intention is to give people simple steps they can take immediately and have direct impact on fuel savings."

Reported the media at the time: "The new public service announcements give drivers tips on how they can save gasoline. One television ad, which will be broadcast later this year, shows a gigantic oil gusher that is not coming from a well, but bursting forth from the valve on a tire. The announcer tells viewers that by slightly increasing the air pressure slightly in their tires, they can save 50,000 barrels of oil each day."

And gas will still be near $4 a gallon.
BTW: the CNN ponts say Obama’s figures assume one in four tires is at least eight pounds under pressure, in other words, it requires extreme cases. CNN is not exactly in the McCain camp.
So it’s your tire gauge against their tire gauge.
Meanwhile, gas is still near $4 a gallon and the best you have is a tire gauge. It’s not that it’s not smart; it’s that it isn’t something we don’t all know. I just don’t think you base a Presidential candidacy on telling America they are stupid, ignorant and don’t take care of their cars.

I’ll try to get a word in early here.
Jake – the republicans are mocking this because they are playing a vicious, cynical game. Obama lays out an entire energy plan, which is praised by many (this article is from 2 days ago: and the republicans, not wanting to engage the actual policy, isolate the smallest comment – something that wasn’t even IN the policy, and claim loud and strong that that’s Obama’s whole policy.
Yes, Jake. I think that ALL Americans, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Undeclareds, etc – we all deserve better than this. And while we stare glumly at the price at the pump (4.49 for regular where I live), I’ll take whatever advice anyone can give me so I spend less when I pull up. But I want my elected officials (and for better or worse – BOTH Obama AND McCain are already elected to do a job) to do a whole lot better than play gotcha games like the one the republicans are playing right now.

First of all read the whole story it is ONLY true if certain assumptions are made.
The dept. of energy has a different report saying it is not always true
ANYWAY the point it is NOT the solution or even a tiny tiny fraction part of the solution and that IS what Obama was claiming

Posted by: Krist | August 5, 2008, 10:34 pm 10:34 pm

Len-
I don’t think that Obama is saying that Americans are stupid, but he is saying something that not all people know, believe it or not. And besides, even if people do know it, it doesn’t mean that people are following it, and the point of reiteration is to get people to follow it.
There are many things that people do that increase our national gas usage, including speeding. We all know that speeding increases consumption. Have we stopped speeding? Nope. If we did, they wouldn’t still be telling us.
I guess it’s better to say that, Obama knows that we’re not stupid, but he also knows that, by nature, humans are pretty stubborn.
And besides, there HAS to be some ignorant bastards out there, or Bush wouldn’t have gotten re-elected on his platform of fearmongering in 2004.

Posted by: Jason | August 5, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

You Obama supporters are grasping at straws to hope this claim of his is right, but there is no vindication here. You can’t insist that these are authorities just because they agree with Obama. Other authorities have said just the opposite, with one scientist saying that it will take up to 11,000 years for tire inflation to make up for the oil that is to be found in off shore drilling.
The key element is that Obama is so out of touch with reality, that it is ridiculous, that he would offer this tire inflation deal as his solution. Note, in his speech, that was his main solution, not his “energy plan”, that he announced later. Also, remember that Obama FLIPPED on offshore drilling just a few days ago.
Obama is wrong, deluded, and just plain ignorant.

Posted by: decentAmerican | August 5, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

Obama was asked what a person could do personally to help the energy crisis. Obama said inflate your tires.
Thinking he did otherwise is ignorant.

Posted by: JOsh | August 5, 2008, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm

Keep in mind that Obama was simply offering up the tire gauge, not his idea, to deflect attention away from his flip-flop on offshore drilling, not his idea, and his refusal to accept nuclear energy, his idea, and his claim to be advocating innovation, not his idea.
So Obama merely needs to get credit for positions that are not his idea.
Does he have any?
And why does this man need so much protection by women?

Posted by: Jake | August 5, 2008, 10:45 pm 10:45 pm

@jason: I don’t think Obama telling people they are ‘typically bitter’ or “It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant” or those awful remarks in Germany are exactly him handing out diplomas.
This man has done nothing but look down on the voters since his campaign began. He is using every divisive symbol he can find and his supporters are doing the same.
Old wrinkly white man? C’mon. That’s really a fine way to rally the seniors to vote for Obama.

Posted by: len | August 5, 2008, 10:48 pm 10:48 pm

I don’t think that anyone is arguing that inflating your tires doesn’t help save energy. Going 55 also helps save energy, so do regular tune ups. But enough of the 70’s slogans – they didn’t fix things 30 years ago and won’t now.
We need some real answers that will help fix this problem, not some abstract ideas that sound good during a campaign speech (i.e. – I’ll think about offshore oil drilling, I’ll think about nuclear power, etc etc.) My favorite is the new one, release the oil reserve – this is a short term fix at best – I say Mr. Obama should roll out the “I drive 55″ bumper stickers…

Posted by: Ernie | August 5, 2008, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm

len,
Your posts noting that CNN said “Obama’s figures assume one in four tires is at least eight pounds under pressure”.
Can’t that be translated to (or, isn’t it equivalent to) all four tires merely two pounds under pressure?
I ride bicycle almost everyday for 15 miles. Yes, it takes a lot more work to complete that 15 miles when tire pressure is lower. I usually keep it at fifty pounds (yes, bike tires at fifty pounds). By the third day, it will reach forty pounds, and bike slows down quicker and takes harder pedaling to move.
So… properly inflate your car tires and improve your car’s mileage.
I can get further with less pedaling if I stand on the pedal when going through bouncy road.
So…. replace bad shocks and struts and improve your car’s mileage.

Posted by: David | August 5, 2008, 10:53 pm 10:53 pm

Whether it’s true or not is irrelevant.
The point is to paint Obama as a besweatered Jimmy Carter. If the press essentially helps them to do that, it doesn’t matter if the claim is true or not. The message will be out, and the Atwater/Rove/Schmidt tactics will be vindicated.

Posted by: JJ | August 5, 2008, 10:54 pm 10:54 pm

decentAmerican, you and the Republican Party are the ones grasping at straws. Would you care to elaborate upon your ‘one scientist’? I have heard Obama’s plan vindicated by economists, motor authorities, and Bush the elder’s own energy solutions. You propose ‘one scientist’ as the counter? You’re going to have to do better. At least provide a source. 11,000 years? That sounds like the rate assuming only one car drove continuously for that time. However, we’re talking 300 million people doing their little part to make their nation richer. A small number multiplied by 300 million is likely to be rather large.
The claim that tire inflation is Obama’s ‘real’ solution is pathetic. Honestly. Get a brain. That’s straight from McCain’s mouth and you obviously didn’t bother to check it.
Do yourself a favor and admit that he’s right on this one. Save yourself and the country a little gas. Either that or show some sources. I can make things up too: one scientist said if I pick my nose 3 times a day, the energy crisis will go away by Labor Day.
McCain flipped on offshore drilling. He said ‘I am opposed’ and did a 180 to ‘We need to drill. Right here. Right now.’ Obama effectively said, ‘I still don’t like offshore drilling, but I can compromise to get some more responsible energy legislation passed along with it.’ That’s not a flipflop. That’s an entirely reasonable attempt to create a solution when Republicans have been blaming Democrats for not falling in love with their terrible plan and going along with it 100%.

Posted by: intelligentAmerican | August 5, 2008, 10:55 pm 10:55 pm

Obama was asked what someone could do personally to help the energy crisis. Obama said inflate your tires.
Thinking he did otherwise is ignorant.

Posted by: Josh | August 5, 2008, 10:55 pm 10:55 pm

Yes, there may some truth in Obama’s claim providing you are driving your vehicle with your pressure at 24 lbs in stead of 32 lbs. Just for the fun, I lowered my pressure by 8 lbs (needed to make the claim) and it was very obvious and the vehicle was hard to steer. So most drivers would know the tires needed attention. Still think proper inflating tires will not make that much difference in gas usage. One side of my tires were almost flat.

Posted by: Martin | August 5, 2008, 10:56 pm 10:56 pm

Josh — that is NOT what Obama said at all. He clearly said that inflating your tires will save as much oil as that produced from off shore drilling.
By the way, the good people who came up with the facts about Obama’s claim being completely ridiculous, relying on REAL data, also took apart the Time magazine claim as bogus. Politifact is also run by journalists, and if you read their article, they make a A LOT of GENEROUS assumptions. Read powerline, they got facts and data.
Obama’s claim is bogus. There is no doubt that inflating your tires will help, but that is not what he claims. he claims that it will replace our dependence on off shore drilling. That is the key, and that is why the GOP, and most reasonable Americans, are laughing at his folly.
It is completely ignorant to think otherwise, when the facts are there.

Posted by: decentAmerican | August 5, 2008, 10:56 pm 10:56 pm

Some degree of under-inflation is surely optimal. No evidence has been presented that the current degree of underinflation is not the optimal level.
It is trivially true that we could consume less oil if we fully inflated all of our tires. But this statement entirely misses the point of why we consume oil: to add convenience to our lives. Avoiding the trouble of daily monitoring of our tires is just one example of that. Perhaps we could trim 3% off our gas bill by doing that. I’m sure we could also trim 3% off our gas bill by biking to work a few times a month, too. Neither “conservation” idea necessarily presents a reasonable solution to our energy needs.

Posted by: Victor | August 5, 2008, 10:58 pm 10:58 pm

I’m not sure who disputed that air in your tires save you gas mileage. The point was that this is nothing new and most people already know this. Ok, so Obama should come out tomorrow and say we should drive 50 m/ph as well since it is also well know that driving slower saves one on gas. I will not count on it.

JJ,
Barack Obama isn’t Jimmy Carter, nor is he a John Kerry.
This year is different. People are hurting badly. The juvenile tactics employed by the GOP would likely work on a lesser candidate than Obama, in a different year.
But the dynamics have changed. The McCain camp, probably sensing the backlash from internal polling, has ceased the sort of tactics deployed last week, and are running a more standard campaign. The whole “tire gauge” stunt, has also failed to ignite, unlike the “purple heart bandaids” and “flip flops” from 2004.
It just isn’t going to work this time, not against this democratic candidate.

Posted by: ChrisNBama | August 5, 2008, 11:02 pm 11:02 pm

Wow, what compelling information, NOT! The underlying assumptions are unreal and takes an extreme degree of faith about what proper inflation will give you and a tuned engine. decentAmerican, I just went to Power Line.
Even from the ‘calculations’ of a clearly pro-Bush, extremely conservative blog, he was willing to allow 90,000,000 barrels a year.
Dude. This is bad…how? This starts taking effect NOW. It takes effect the second people pump their tires up a bit. Even if Obama’s incorrect about how much oil would be saved as opposed to offshore drilling, it WILL take at least 5 years before the new sites start producing. This is readily admitted from the mouth of Bush himself.

MORE ELITISM AND STUPIDITY FROM OBAMA

Posted by: Al Johnson | August 5, 2008, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

All the cars in my family get regular tuneups after a certain number of miles, and all the car tires are well inflated. When we bought our car, we also bought maintenance coverage on it. That said, filling one tank still takes $60 and having a wellrunning car isn’t helping us save gas.
Any other “bright” ideas obama? Politicians are supposed to work out great policies, not preach messages about personal responsibility to already responsible people.

Posted by: Jon | August 5, 2008, 11:09 pm 11:09 pm

The moment we start drilling, speculators will panic and start selling their oil futures. This will result in the price of oil going down.

Posted by: Bob | August 5, 2008, 11:09 pm 11:09 pm

“Decent American” is being silly. Obama didn’t claim that tire inflation would save more oil than comes from off shore dilling, he said it would PROBABLY save more oil than the NEW off shore drilling. It was a response to a question from the audience and not part of his official energy plan.
Can those of you on the right stop coming up with silly things to attack Obama.

Posted by: kevin | August 5, 2008, 11:11 pm 11:11 pm

Nosy Obama should mind his own business. I’ll take care of my own tires. His job is to drill for more oil, as well as explore alternative energy.

Posted by: Ron | August 5, 2008, 11:12 pm 11:12 pm

Jon, I can see you’re not one for small government.
People may be responsible but that doesn’t mean they know what’s happening or what’s right. To pat yourself on the back all day for being a good deed do-er and close your mind to the thought that you may be wrong about some things already strips you of the wisdom you were so eager to provide yourself.
If Americans are responsible, let them be responsible with the truth.

Posted by: intelligentAmerican | August 5, 2008, 11:13 pm 11:13 pm

The only thing that is inflated is Prof. Obama’s ego. What’s next, Dr, Obama will educate us on how to efficiently use toilet paper?

Posted by: Jackie | August 5, 2008, 11:13 pm 11:13 pm

Bob – right on! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell others about. People get fixated on when production starts to come on board, not how speculators would respond to the prospect of oil coming into the market. I also predict once we make a commitment to drill, OPEC will mysteriously open up the spigot. They might be greedy, but not stupid. The end result is that oil price will come down.

Posted by: Frustrated Voter | August 5, 2008, 11:14 pm 11:14 pm

The tire gauge is a measure we can use, for sure, but the GOP is just using it as a distraction. They’re digging in and throwing up distractions like this to protect Holy Big Oil. The GOP has no policy leg to stand on because the drill everywhere, keep up the oil addiction plan they propose is not only wrong, it’s immoral. It’s great for Big Oil and the GOP but a DISASTER FOR AMERICA! The GOP typically just sees the energy crisis as an opportunity to make more huge profits for their pals not as an opportunity to seize the moment to move beyond oil into the exciting new alternative energies of the future. It’s a BushGOP scam can’t we all see that by now.

Well the ST. Pete times is once again giving wide latitude to Obama, something they don’t afford McCain. But they’ve also back democrats last 3 elections so its not surprising. And if you call them on it they don’t respond so I’m not surprised.
They mark it as true only because its plausible because Obama only said “could” not “would”. Yet if he’s using it as an attack that should not be the case, and here he used it as an attack. Because then the attack part must also be taken into account. By their own numbers it does not work out, yet they mark it true. That tells volumes.

Posted by: Zaggs | August 5, 2008, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm

Even Bush’s energy Dept says proper pressure will save 3-4%, and most people DON’T check their air regularly… so, as a public service, for the proud GOP cultists out there in Bloglandistan, who will buy anything the GOP sells… try this:
Let’s see… if I spend $100 per week on gas, I’ll save $3 per week, by inflating my tires properly… $156 per year. That’s one-and-a-half weeks of gas, I’ve saved. Let’s say just 10 million people do the same, that would be a savings to those people, of $1,560,000,000 – - that’s $1.56 billion saved.
No wonder the GOP is making fun of it, that’s $1.56 billion that wouldn’t be going into Big Oil, or OPEC’s pockets.
So, the question is who are the GOP trying to fool, by mocking Obama?
And who is actually ignorant enough, to enjoy being played for a fool, by the GOP?

Posted by: Baz | August 5, 2008, 11:28 pm 11:28 pm

Wow that was a crappy article that supposedly backed up Obama’s claim.
Obama said “But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling”
Off drilling, not just offshore drilling. So the article in question is way off base because it doesn’t take into account Shale or anything outside of offshore drilling. Which is NOT what Obama claimed.

To Everyone Claiming “It’s Not True” – ask yourself – WHAT’S not true? It’s not true that this is something that individual Americans can do to help with the energy crisis, while our elected officials work on larger solutions?
It’s not similar to small personal changes like recycling, switching to florescent light bulbs and showering more than taking baths?
This only becomes a matter of “true” and “untrue” if you actually believe that Americans can do NOTHING to help the situation – and that we are only victims waiting for our elected officials to save us.
I’m very glad that Obama is running on the platform that WE can do this TOGETHER.
QT

While clearly inflating one’s tires and having a tune-up as recommended is beneficial in regards to energy conservation if we’re going to rely on the behavior change of people who do neither then we’re in trouble. Regular
exercise, a healthy diet and not smoking
can impact health care costs and yet we haven’t come up with the magic bullet to get everyone to make those changes in their lives. So if everyone with a car were to ensure they have a tune-up and inflated tires could it have an impact? Sure. Is everyone doing that now and going to do it consistently from here on in? Probably not. So while those recommendations are important and we should all heed them
I don’t think we should count all those dollars we’re going to save quite yet
or make it the crux of our energy policy.

You all will believe whatever this jerks in the news says, worse believing anything someone wanting to steal the oval office says.
1. there is zero way to know how many tires need air, if might be only 10%, wow what savings that is.
2. This is not 1960s, tires today do not loss air as old designs did
3. More and more people replace air with nitrogen which leaks out less then air.
4. modern cars with electronic management auto adjust and there is nothing to really tune and sparkplugs of today last 100,000 miles.
5. BS stinks and so does most coming out of Ubama’s mouth.

Again, when do we experience that epiphany Obama spoke of?

Posted by: Al Johnson | August 6, 2008, 12:07 am 12:07 am

Obama first made the assumption that all vehicles must have under-inflated tires but that seems highly unlikely since it’s been preached time and time again about keeping tires properly inflated.
The best assumptions that can be made is that if one over-inflates the tires by 30% it can actually increase mileage by about 1%-2% but the savings will be offset by the cost of replacement tires as the over-inflated tires will wear out quicker. It will also increase the use of oil product that will have to be used in the replacement tires.
Keeping proper PSI in tires is good but the reality of it is that it won’t make a dent in decreasing the amount of oil needed. The only thing that will make a positive difference in supply is increasing it.

My tires are properly inflated, and my car needs a tuneup every 100,000 miles. Guess I saved nothing. If 100,000,000 also save nothing. The total savings will be 0. Mr. O has NO Clue. What is a liberal with a brain

JR: “This is not 1960s, tires today do not loss air as old designs did”
Is Goodyear selling tires from the 1960s? Why do they give the following advice to drivers?
“Here’s a list of quick and easy maintenance checks every car owner should conduct *on a monthly basis* to keep their automobile in tip-top shape
[...]
Tires – Check your tires (including the spare) for proper inflation, treadwear and any sign of damage, such as punctures or cuts – all of which affect safety and overall performance.
o Inflation – Use a tire pressure gauge on cool tires to measure air pressure. (Early morning after your vehicle has been sitting all night is a good time.)”

McCain just endorsed Obama’s energy plan!!!
From Mark Halperin
“McCain displays his normal “discipline” at a Tuesday tele-town meeting, undermining days of (questionable, desperate, and — apparently — effective) attacks by his campaign and the whole Republican Party on Obama’s call for tire inflation to save fuel.
McCain: “And could I mention that Senator Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it.””

Posted by: Shelley | August 6, 2008, 12:21 am 12:21 am

LOL the McSame campaign is so lame. There isn’t one study that can dispute that proper tire inflations will contribute to fuel conservation.
I am so tires of whacked republican rhetoric and NO SOLUTIONS that I could puke.
I would not trust anyone affiliated with the republican party and I pray that Americans make them pay for spreading propoganda.
My vote goes to Barack Obama and I believe he will serve our country better than McSame.
McSame has run a very empty campaign so far filled with negative attacks and no solutions for any of our current problems as I stated earlier.
McLame is hell bent on “winning” the war in Iraq, which by the way should have NEVER happened. They invaded another country under false pretenses and the truth is coming out.
The old man keeps his message the same McLame is McSame as Bush / Cheney. They are totally dishonest people.

Here’s a plan! How about inflating our tires and drilling? How about building 45 new nuclear power plants and building wind farms? How about Oil Shale and Ethanol? How about Clean Coal and Solar? How about Natural Gas and Fuel Cell?
Notice the keyword in every question, “all”. How about doing it all and all?

Rock on Senator Obama!
Aside from ABC (thank you Jake Tapper) proving the tire inflation tip to be factual, but I was stoked to see Obama DROP THE GLOVES – finally – today!
The McLame commercial that made a weak attempt to try and separate himself from Bush was by far my favorite for today.
Senator Obama swiftly came out with a commercial that slammed McLame’s comments into the dirt.
Obama’s campaign needs to learn a lesson from what they’ve seen in the past three days. McLame’s negative ads worked, but when Obama fights back with all of the ammunition that he’s armed with (and he has a LOT) it is EFFECTIVE!
Keep it up! And keep those McLame/Bush comparisons coming in!
McLame “I voted with president Bush more than 90% of the time”
LOL – that video needs to roll DAILY, on the hour!

When we get Steam powered trucks I will know we are serious about alternative energy. Stanley steamer cars could go 150 MPH. They required some tinkering, but nowadays with current electronics, no problem. You can make water boil with many items found in garbage dumps. Yes, some of them would pollute. Some would not.

Travis, have you been in a coma the past month?
If you’re a mcsame supporter, you should know that your man has slammed drilling for 26.5 years.
He only changed his mind when he was lured in by the millions he was given to endorse the plan, and by the meeting he had with mister bush a week prior to flipping on drilling. Two weeks ago.
Twenty six years of a documented ANTI-DRILLING voting record.
The balding one thought he found a real winner when he flip-flopped, but he has 26 years of a hardcord anti-drilling stance.

Posted by: Jim | August 6, 2008, 12:53 am 12:53 am

The talk about drilling ignores the fact that we LEASE the land to drillers. We dont have to do that.
We can drill on it ourselves. WE OWN THE LAND.
WE DONT HAVE TO LEASE IT TO THE OIL COMPANIES AND WE DONT HAVE TO BID FOR THE OIL WE PROCESS FROM OUR OWN WELLS, AGAINST THE WORLD ON THE OPEN COMMODITIES MARKET.
WE OWN THE OIL, NOW. ITS OURS, ALREADY.
The fiction that it is not good business for the USA to own its own oil is a lie made up by people who bribe our elected officials. They call the bribes by other names. They are bribes. Think before you sling some NAME at me. WE own the oil. We dont have to let oil companies jack us around. Generalities are unsubstantiated lies.
The truth is what we make of life.

so, how many of you all are actually going to go out and check your tires and drive slower? because typically most people only do that once or twice and stop driving slower after about a week. the truth is it wont end up saving much money at all both side need to stop trying to spend money on oil period and find a new way to power vehicles
like the hydrogen cell cars that only emit water.

Oil companines already have 70 million acres of land to drill on. Appeasing them with a few million more isn’t going to do anything. Oil companines have to be willing to drill which they are not because they refuse to drill for millions of barrels of oil on land they already have.
This is why windfall profits are important it taxes money from oil companines and uses it to invest in energy production instead of CEO pay, stock buy backs and speculation.
This is also why anti-speculation measures are important becaues the Oil companies waste 55% of their profits on speculation when that money could be usded.
The Bush Mccain oil lobby Offshore drilling plan is a farce. It won’t lead to any improvement or relieve ever.

What a bunch of dummies the public can be. Everyone has known for years to properly inflate your tires. My Grandfather taught me that in the 1970′s oil crisis.
This is as big a news flash that cigarretes are bad for you.
Obama is a fool, but he is lucky that he has 100 million other fools to follow him.
SUre, everyone that doesn’t inflate your tires properly- go do that. Then lets drill for oil here in the USA, and seek out alternative energies- including a better car battery to store them.
Note- Obama is coming around after weeks of floundering to the same conclusion McCain has had.

And IF this power was in us all along, WHY do we STILL rely on foreign oil, and our economy is going down the tubes due to gas prices? The nuclear plant McCain visited today has had three significant problems in the past.
Nuclear is fraught with real dangers.
The nuclear site near Paducah KY was abandoned by Union Carbide, the former owner, which was divested by its parent company in an accounting trick, to leave the state of Kentucky with no one to sue, and the cost of the damage to the environment is beyond calculation. The cost in hundreds of millions of dollars to clean it up must be borne by you taxpayers and it has not happened for a decade.
Ask McCain’s wife to pay for the Paducah KY nuclear cleanup.
It would take her entire fortune.

Travis: You want to include some facts with diatribe? Like how lng nw offshore fields are going to last us, where they are, what their reservoir capacity is (forget California – no one is going to risk drilling off the most expensive real estate in the world). And I’d like to see some economic numbers too. The problem isn’t supply – the problem is that for better or worse it’s a free market economy and the petroleum companies are going to charge what they want.
And while we’re talking about inane political suggestions – what kind of a man, let alone a presidential candidate, would suggest that his wife engage in a topless beauty pageant in South Dakota – like John McCain did today? If last week wasn’t creepy enough (even the Hiltons were offended), this one makes me feel like taking a good long shower. What a couple of sleezebags.

People should stand outside their houses and prevent them from getting into their cars. Airlines should not give these people tickets to fly on aircrafts as aircrafts use petroleum products. That will teach them a lesson. All those who oppose drilling for oil in US should start using bicyles. THese guys want to send money to middle east and drain the US treasury.

I don’t know where people get their information from. I pride “Political Punch” Commenters as few of the high information voters in the Country.
But it appears that some commenters I come across in some of the other News blogs are fast infilterating Political Punch.
Someone said Prices of Oil may come down if Saudi Arabia pumps more Crude.
Saudi Arabia is ready to pump but you need to ask, do they have demands backed up by the ability to pay? It is called effective demand in micro economics.
Asking an Oil producer to pump without having a Customer to buy is fool hardy because it is like a Merchandizer over-stocking perishable goods not on actual demand but on anticipated demand.
These are my thoughts and I will try to keep it simple and elementary.
The reasons for the high price of Crude are:
1. American ailing Economy which have had the value of the Dollar nose-diving against other Currencies of world. What this means is that the real value of the Dollar is not what it used to be a year ago.
As an example, In my native Country, Nigeria, a Dollar was exchanging for as high as 135 Naira as at January 2007. Do you know how much a Dollar exchanges for currently in Nigeria? It is 116.50 Naira.
Dollar is weak and it is weakening.
2. America, because of War Spending, is heavily indebted to China and other business partner Countries.
The Balance of Payment of the US is in RED. It is adverse.
3. With Balance of payment Deficit, the external reserve is fast depreciating.
4. The US sits atop just 3% of the World’s Oil Deposit (Off-Shore Drilling on not) but it accounts for 25% of Global demand for Oil.
Do you in fairness think that we can turn our back on foreign Oil with our 3% Oil reserve?
The Politicians did not tell you the Cost of refining American Crude, which more than double the cost of refinning Crude from South America and African’s Brent and Bonny Light.
Drilling Off-shore bring about a momentary decrease in price, but it will have no effect in the long run.
Then we talk of Alternative fuel. What is the Oppotunity Cost of converting our grains to Oil. Has anybody bothered to think about the gbobal food crises this would cause?
Has anyone bothered to compare the flash points, Viscosity and gallon/mile usage of these biofuel/diesel?
Lets not guile ourselves, American can not be independent from Foreign Oil. Not now, not ever.
What can bring about a crash in global Oil prices are:
1. End all hostilities and aggression in the Middle East.
2. Reduce spendings on War and divert such monies to revamp the economy.
3. Vote for a reasonable Leader that will work the talk and not talk of War.
4. Let compromise be the watch word in the Iran Nuclear Stand-off. An attack on Iran will push the price of Oil Further and supplies of Crude to the US will be impeded.
I know my post is disjointed. It just a string of my thoughts.
A caveat: I don’t claim to be an expert, but I can use my common-sense. I don’t need a Politician to teach me nonsense. Mccain and Obama are human like you and I.
They share the same eccentricities like all of us.
Their abilities to make a difference in the live of America and average Americans is for them to sorround themselves with good and proven Advisors and for them to have listening Ears and the spirit of a doer.

I think this is fascinating. The GOP have managed to convince everyone that offshore drilling is the only way to solve the energy crisis, and so any othewr ideas are just laughed off. Just shows how much power over the GOP it appears that the oil companies have. Do we really want 4 more years of oil companies with such influence over our lives?
I think Obama is correct in that a more comprehensive energy policy is needed that moves us away from oil consumption. I don’t think thats easy, but just think of what a boost US industry could have if it was the one making moves away from oil based solutions. Imagine the boost of GM were the first to develop a fully non oil based car, or if the US insisted all new build housing included solar panels for instance.

McCain said immediately that yes, we should all do our part to conserve oil by keeping our tires properly inflated but that doing so was just part of an overall energy plan of “Conserve More, Produce More, Invent More”. Just because Obama has been able to get a source to back up his claim that inflating tires would replace ALL of the oil gained by domestic drilling, doesn’t mean it’s true.

McCain has had a “comprehensive” energy policy that was written by Phil Gramm, Randy Scheunemann and Mr. Black…
all past lobbyists for oil and energy…
and three of the main heads of McCain’s attempt at the white house.
that’s why he had an “energy policy” fro the start…and one that includes very little from the old “green” John McCain.
His 2 big attempts at dealing with the gas prices come from the oil industries platform…gas tax holiday and off shore drilling.
So stop trying to spin… it is not the Obama supporters who are lying… it is the Mccain campaign that is either lying…misinformed…or just plain consistently ignorant as they were when they voted for George Bush.

What even funnier that Obama played the RACE CARD on Bill Clinton DEMOCRAT.
Even funnier is Obama ditched REAL AMERICAN wounded SOLIDERS in Germany over roaring crowds of Germans for a PHOTO OP

Posted by: funny. | August 6, 2008, 8:50 am 8:50 am

Obama NEVER said that inflating one’s tires would “end out dependance on foreigh oil”. Anyone stating that he did immediately renders their comments inaccurate and irrelevant. He said simply that properly inflating tires could amount to the same savings as the NEW proposed offshore drilling. He never said it could replace existing offshore drilling. THAT is the key.
People who cannot acknowledge this simple truth show themselves to be what they are…”IGNORANT”.

“Even funnier is Obama ditched REAL AMERICAN wounded SOLIDERS in Germany over roaring crowds of Germans for a PHOTO OP”
Even funnier is that — like the claim that Obama said tire inflation would end our dependence on foreign oil — is an outright lie.
Even the McCain campaign’s own blog has admitted that was a lie.

Did Bill Clinton DEMOCRAT say Obama played the RACE CARD on him a lie

Posted by: Jake. | August 6, 2008, 8:54 am 8:54 am

You know one of the joys of getting older is that you have seen the same efforts before. American’s have a LOVE AFFAIR with their cars. In California in the 60′s the push was to get the drivers out of their cars, take the bus, catch a ride with a friend—none of this moved the general public—and they spent a lot of money and effort to accomplish it. Obama is taking the same approach again already tried, sad but true. And, Jake although you say that tune-ups and inflated tires will save more energy than off-shore drilling, that is just plain (no comment appropriate). If we are indeed in hard times and people do not have the extra monies to fill up their gas tanks (and such a bad crisis that Obama wants to take the oil reserves) then of course, people will not have monies for a tune-up for their cars and will spend this money on food or energy costs. Obama’s plan (read from his website) indicates that he will reduce our oil dependency by 35% by the year 2030. That is 22 years from now and we still will be dependent on the Middle East—that is just crazy talk too. Start drilling now, which should have been done years ago and get our best technology experts moving into areas to change our dependency on oil, now. We cannot afford to wait to 2030 to see if we have reduced our oil dependency.

It may be true but it sounds Nanny statish and patronizing.

Posted by: bct424 | August 6, 2008, 8:56 am 8:56 am

This concerns me because for some time the McCain campaign has in so many ways said that “we are not in ‘big oil’s pocket”, but for them to not to consider the tire-inflation (let alone do research on it) and keep pushing the off-shore drilling as the best current solution makes me question not only where they get their information from but in whose interests are they doing making their energy policies.

Posted by: bspia2 | August 6, 2008, 8:58 am 8:58 am

your facts are wrong. Obama is reiterating his energy plan put forth early in the primary. McCains energy plan is based on all recent flip flops against his long voting record. Do a little research before believing the hype.

JOhn McCain sold his soul to be President.
His top advisors are ex lobbyists for oil, energy and banking industry.
Some of the biggest and baddest people who dealt us the hand we have.
That is the truth
Gramm… Enron loophole and banking deregulation
Scheunneman..President of “The Committee for Liberation of Iraq” made up of lobbyist and pols they gave money to
Black
the biggest lobbyist around… google Black and Guinea to see soem of his handiwork for oil rich nation.
That is where this energy policy and Mccain gas tax holiday and lifting the entire federal ban against off shore drilling comes from.
(the oil companies want access to state officials with their lobbyists and moolah)…
don’t be fooled again
the oil companies know this may be the last chance for them to get to unfettered access to the shores…
and McCain sold his soul to be President.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) says that for every pound of pressure your tires are under-inflated, you lose 2% of mileage on your car….And the United States Department of Transportation states that approximately 25% of all commuters are driving a few pounds short of full pressure. Do the math.
Anyone arguing against these facts IS truly “ignorant”. No wonder this country’s economy is in the condition it’s in. People can’t even see the truth when it’s staring them in their ignorant faces.

If McCain had suggested it first the Obama camp and the media would have done the same thing–probably more criticism.
It is Obama’s all knowing attitude and mocking manner that turns me off. I thought most Americans already knew that taking care of their cars helped gas. But to hear this sarcastic jerk tell us what to do–a complete turn off.
And then to have Obama flip and support drilling–and to dangle a $1000 carrot that will hurt us later.
Obama has no integrity.

Come on this is a long list of Obama dirty deeds. Along with his stealing speeches that would of ended anybodies elses campaign like a train hitting a wall. We all know why Obama got away with that. It was at the height of his playing the RACE Card On the Clintons.

Obama supporters don’t understand that some of us have been following this campaign since last year. We know that Obama is a parrot and a follower. When the polls show 70% of Americans want to expand domestic drilling and he’s tanking in the polls, well, okay then he’s for it. That ain’t a leader, folks. A leader stands up and tells you why he’s so opposed to it and is able to bring you onboard with his viewpoint and plans. But Obama’s viewpoint is all over the place and his only plan is to say whatever it takes to win an election. Once he’s safely ensconced in the Oval Office, we’ll finally see the real Obama, whoever that is.

riley: “It is Obama’s all knowing attitude and mocking manner that turns me off. I thought most Americans already knew that taking care of their cars helped gas. But to hear this sarcastic jerk tell us what to do–a complete turn off.”
I think that statement is very narrow-pointed. Did you see the town-hall meeting where Obama suggested tire-inflation to an individual who asked what they could do individually to help? He didn’t sound sarcastic. What you call sarcasm many would call sincerely answering a person’s question based on research someone may have done. If you knew that taking care of your car helps conserve gas, good. But don’t assume all your fellow Americans did. And you speak of him mocking (‘shoe on the other foot’) but McCain for the past few days have mocked Obama claiming that tire-inflation was Obama’s only strategy for the oil situation, which isn’t true. So don’t make this one-sided because they both had a part in whatever mockery or sarcasm is being thrown around.

Despite the Department of Energy stating that offshore drilling would not have much impact on oil production for over 20 years, John McCain continued to make the argument tonight that the U.S. could see an impact on gas prices in a matter of months once domestic oil drilling begins.
McCain first made that assertion last week at an oil field in Bakersfield, California, but neither he nor his campaign has been able to point to any literature or any oil executive that says domestic drilling would have any immediate impact

Unfortunately, the comment you’re thanking me for has been deleted.
Why? It was a link to NASCAR’s statement that tire inflation will improve fuel economy. How does that violate site rules?

Posted by: TR | August 6, 2008, 9:38 am 9:38 am

Doesn’t matter, tr. ABC may not want people leaving their site. Still doesn’t change the fact that NASCAR (not a “liberal” organization, by any measure) fully endorses properly inflating tires as a means to save gas.
It’s common sense. This whole question about it is ridiculous!

Posted by: Do your homework | August 6, 2008, 9:44 am 9:44 am

So inflating our tires is going to yield 80Billion barrels of oil, which is located off shore?
Please you can not estimate this because how do they how many people have under inflated tires?
Tuneups, i do not know about you but my car has only recommended tuneups every 25,000 miles. most modern cars do not get tuned up the same way.
Hey maybe the Messiah can fill our tire with his hot air that he speaks!!

Posted by: spock | August 6, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

According to Reuters, even JOHN MCCAIN has now admitted that Obama was right.
“The surprise came during a telephone town hall meeting McCain held on Tuesday with voters in Pennsylvania.
“Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it,” McCain said.”

Posted by: TR | August 6, 2008, 9:51 am 9:51 am

“So inflating our tires is going to yield 80Billion barrels of oil, which is located off shore?”
You might want to direct that question to the Bush Administration’s Department of Energy. They’re the ones who say tire inflation will save a lot now, and they’re the ones who say we wouldn’t see any relief at the gas pumps from offshore drilling until 2030.
That’s not a liberal talking. That’s not a journalist fact-checking. That is the Department of Energy of the George W. Bush Administration.
Are they part of the conspiracy, too?

Some of us have actually gone and seen Obama (7 times) and McCain (5 times)
Let me tell you …they may both “parrot” as you say the will of the American people…
but trust me McCain is parroting (not the American people but his lobbyist advisors … ALL of whom are some of the biggest lobbyists in the biz…and at the center of responsibility for where we are…and John’s Platform)
I can tell you McCain is the parrot…you can tell when they are asked “follow-ups”
John gets very different when he actually has to answer the complexities of his statements…
because …he doesn’t get them.
As someone who actually use to support McCain and Biden and Clinton…
You may have been following this for a year…but you watch through a perspective that is not looking at facts.
John McCain sold what was left of his soul to run for President…
do a little background research on Rick Davis, Randy Scheunemann, Charlie Black, Phil Gramm, and even this new dude who is getting press…Harry Sargent.
very bad relationships and history with lobbyists and …Iraq…oil…banking…defense contractors…the Coomitteee for lIberation of Iraq…Enron…
and the list goes on
these are the people that John McCain is parroting …because these are the people who wrote his platform for him.
These are his top circle in his campaign…and will be the top circle in the white house.

“Despite the Department of Energy stating that offshore drilling would not have much impact on oil production for over 20 years, John McCain continued to make the argument tonight that the U.S. could see an impact on gas prices in a matter of months once domestic oil drilling begins.”
Because they are talking about production (and it won’t take twenty years) and McCain is talking about prices. Note the fall in prices since the Bush Administration removed the executive ban on drilling and Obama belatedly admitted it was a good idea.
The current prices are a result of speculation in the oil commodities market. It is possible to bring prices down with pro-active steps such as offshore drilling. Obama’s and Pelosi’s refusal to take pro-active steps are keeping the prices artificially high. It is a cynical move that punishes Americans for the sake of their campaign.
Keeping tires inflated is common sense. That is why McCain made fun of it. Obama presented it like it was innovation. That is silliness on his part.

Obama takes pride in being stupid and ignorant. Getting a tune up and inflating tires will not offset gas usage compared to amount gained by drilling off shore. It might save 1% to 2% only if every car on road needed a tune up and drove on very unflated tires.
I beleive all energy energy sources should be developed. (a mechanic)

Seriously, who did the research on this? How many tires nationwide are underinflated? What percentage of underinflation changes fuel efficiency by what percentage. Are all vehicles affected equally? If you can swallow this and call conservatives names at the same time you have serious gullibilty issues.

Posted by: Chris | August 6, 2008, 12:34 pm 12:34 pm

Yes, it looks to be “true”-as in, “in the realm of possibility,” which is a far cry from something that could actually be a viable response to a need for more oil.

Posted by: Wade | August 6, 2008, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

This from Powerline:
“Two points: First, even if Obama’s “3 to 4 percent” claim about tire inflation were true, it would not validate his original assertion that proper inflation would equal “all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling.” That assertion was, and remains, false.
Second, Obama’s claim that “every expert” says that tire inflation would “reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent” is ridiculous. No expert says any such thing. What experts do say is that properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by approximately 3 percent compared to grossly under inflated tires. But since most people know this and inflate their tires, the actual potential savings is some much smaller amount. Moreover, the U.S. consumes around 20.7 million barrels of petroleum per day. Only about 9.3 million barrels per day are used in motor vehicles. So a 3 percent improvement in automobile mileage would correspond, at best, to a 1.3 percent reduction in total oil consumption.
Barack Obama’s ignorance on the subject of energy is remarkable.”
We can not inflate our way out of this.

There will be no America left when McCain gets finished becasue thanks to Bush we are owned by China and they will claim their debt and take this land. Furthermore you must spend no time in the lower income communities or work with the homeless, the uneducated, etc. You probably don’t even know what it means to suffer so until you go down and spend some time in a community that you will never grace with your presents you should keep your ignorance to yourself okay! But the St. Petersburg Times’ Politifact site is being totally disingenuous. They actually reframed what Obama said.
Obama said: “We could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling…”.
“All the oil” refers to new domestic drilling off shore AND ON LAND.
Yet the St. Petersburg Times conveniently only factored off-shore drilling in its math. The St. Petersburg Times also doesn’t account for the fact that its math assumes EVERY driver is driving with under-inflated tires. Never mind tha tauto oil consumption is only a minority subset of total naitonal oil consumption.
“Politifact” my @ss. Come on Jake, why don’t YOU address these issues???

Almost everything the Republicans do has a deeply sexual subtext, usually compensating for inadequacies of one kind or another. ‘Drilling’ in all the forbidden sites couldn’t be clearer. In fact, how much or little it produces is not the point; it’s the defiance and willfulness that counts with them.
It’s like torture. For the the active combat military, current and historical, torture is a loser . . . no credible information and the likelihood that one’s own men will be treated the same way. But for those who need to demonstrate strength they don’t have (keyboard kommandos, think tank drivers, cowardly bullies, etc) torturing or supporting it covers deepest doubts. The violation is the end itself, not information. And it is satisfying for them. They project (!) in the only way they can.

Posted by: p0s3r | August 6, 2008, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm

Inflating your tires is not Obama’s energy policy! He was just stating that if everyone were to do this simple tiny thing, the country would save more oil than any offshore drilling would provide. It’s a criticism of how superficial and ineffective McCain’s policy of drilling for offshore oil is. It sounds good, but looking at the details you see there is too little oil offshore and it will take too long to extract.

Posted by: Jack | August 7, 2008, 3:26 am 3:26 am

I think Obamas going to kill many people with the advice that people should increase air pressure to increase mileage. Does he have any children.
Over inflated tires will increase mileage and will also increase fatal accidents.
Tire that are inflated properly or slightly under inflated have greater surface area touching the road which leads to shorter breaking distances and better handling during wet or icy conditions….. Why don’t you save some kids life. Pressure down.

Posted by: carlleigh | August 7, 2008, 3:58 am 3:58 am

DOE says we could save 1.2 billion gallons of gas a year by properly inflating our tires. We used 142 billion gallons of gas last year. You do the math. Also most cars do not need a regular tune up since we started using on board computers many years ago. I guess Obama’s driver didn’t explain this to him.

Posted by: DAN | August 7, 2008, 1:45 pm 1:45 pm

I don’t get it. Your headline says that you found Obama’s tire preassure claims to be true. Then your second paragraph states the opposite ” our experts disagreed with Obama’s claim that this conservation method would save more energy than new off shore drilling would yield.”
which is it? Obama’s claim is rediculous. he claimed that “every expert agreed” I doubt he could find one.
Your reprint of the Bush admin’s claims that tire inflation would save 7 million gallons a day must be taking into the context of US consumption of about 400 million gallons per day. Do the math. Obama is ignorant of the facts.
