Protesters: “What About The Black Community, Obama?”
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports from St. Petersburg, Florida: In the context of the presidential race dialogue this week, there was a poignant moment during Obama’s town hall in St Petersburg, Florida. Obama was challenged on his work for the African American community by a group of young African American protesters.
In the middle of unveiling his emergency economic stimulus plan, Senator Barack Obama was interrupted by three African American protestors in their early thirties.
Sitting strategically directly below the trademark "Change We Can Believe In" Obama signage, the protesters stood up and started yelling, unrolling a sign of their own: "What about the Black Community, Obama?" The website on their sign indicated the protesters were from International Peoples Democratic Uhuru Movement, which fights for the democratic rights of the African people.
Obama rarely gets interrupted by protesters -– especially from the African American community –- and the Senator looked a little lost at first how to handle it, attempting to speak thought the booming voices behind him.
Stopping his remarks, Obama then chided the protesters, saying, "Excuse me young man, this is a town hall and you can ask your question later. . . . just be courteous and you’ll have a chance to make your statement, just relax."
An Obama staffer quickly swiped the sign out of the protesters hands -– as per the regulations by the Obama campaign, "no outside signs are allowed" into the their town halls. The rest of the crowd drowned out the protesters’ voices by chanting, "yes we can." Two secret service agents moved to stand close to the protesters.
After his prepared remarks, Obama gave the second question to one of the protesters.
"In the face of the numerous attacks that are made against the African community or the black community by the same US government that you aspire to lead. . . why is it that you have not had the ability to not one time speak to the interests and even speak on the behalf of the oppressed and exploited African community or Black community in this country?" asked lead protester Diop Olugbala, citing sub prime mortgages for African Americans, the Sean Bell case, and the Jena 6.
"I think you are misinformed about when you say ‘not one time,’" Obama responded, defending his record. "I’ve been talking about predatory lending for the last two years in the United States Senate and worked to pass legislation to prevent it when I wan in the state legislature. And I have repeatedly said that many of the predatory loans that were made in the mortgage system did target African American and Latino communities. I’ve said that repeatedly. Number two, Jena Six — I was the first candidate to get out there and say this is wrong, that there’s an injustice that’s been done and we need to change it. That’s number two. When Sean Bell got shot, I put out a statement immediately saying this is a problem."
Olugbala attempted to talk back while Obama was answering his question, but the microphone had been taken from the questioner and his voice was drowned out.
Obama concluded with a simple message for the protestors, "These are issues I’ve worked on for decades. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m always going to satisfy the way you guys want these issues framed. I understand that. Which gives you the option of voting for somebody else. It gives you the option of running for office yourself."
Senator Obama continued his town hall, and was interrupted a second time by a white woman who was also part of the Uhuru group in the crowd. Obama asked the woman to not start the yelling again, and then proceeded to take a question from another woman on education.
In an interview after the town hall, Olugbala said he was not satisfied with Senator Obama’s answer and will not vote for him.
"I thought it was revealing," Olugbala told ABC News, "Because he said out of his own mouth that although he has said things about the black community he has not put forth a response that really is representing what the people ourselves are feeling."

Certain people need to do their homework before they ask questions. Obama has been fighting this for a long time. What you people are not understanding is it is not just one man, it takes several votes. If you can just get one vote for maybe 1/2 of what you want, you have to except it and start over no the rest.
One bill is not just one bill, it is 3 or 4 bunched together. Yes, you want 2 of them but the others suck.
What do you do??? Do you vote yes, or no??
Understanding politics is the first step to understanding the question “what have you done to help me”.

I’m a black resident of St Petersburg— the Uhuru’s (the protesting group) are a joke. They actually bring in more problems for the African American community. Olugbala isn’t going to vote for him? As if McCain would ever answer any of his questions head on? Idiot.

When I lived in Little Rock, in the eighties, one of my friends had a sister who came down from New York. Her intent was to stay permanently. After three months, she hightailed it back to New York. I asked my friend Ruth why her sister went back to New York? Was Little Rock a little too country for her? She laughed and said her sister liked Little Rock a lot, but that it was too hard in Arkansas to get on “public assistance.” I asked her why the hell her sister (in her twenties, white, healthy) needed to be on public assistance? Her answer stunned me. She said her sister didn’t have much of an education, and if she got a job, she’d have to settle for something menial like waiting tables or cleaning hotel rooms. It was just easier to be on “public assistance.” I was shocked! I put myself through college waiting tables in my aunt’s restaurant. My parents only had enough money to send one kid to college, and guess what? The money went to my brother. In their thinking, I was a girl and didn’t need an education the way he did. I don’t hold any grudge against them for that. They did what they thought was right. I’ve worked hard, and made my own way in life. I started out waiting tables, got a degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and now I’m an executive secretary in a major corporation. Nobody gave me anything. I earned it all on my own. By the way, I still keep in touch with Ruth in New York. Her sister’s a big Obama supporter. Somehow I’m not surprised. She fits right in with that crowd.

They failed in their attempt.

You forgot to mention you’ll make sure ot it. My question is, what’s going to happen after he loses? I think the difference will be that some will be even more bitter than others. While some will be bitter about the direction of the country with four more years of disaster, you will be even more consumed. You will complain about the country, but you will still be when you realize that didn’t make you one bit happier. You cannot escape hate. Even when you get everything you want, with hate you cannot be fully at peace. I say stop the hating and get on with progress. You’ll be amazed at how much peace you can experience.

A few more votes probably lost but Obama probably doesn’t need them either as he has the Hispanics, the “blacks” and the younger voters.
Today, Dr. Danny Jazarevic, who served as the Chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Vascular Surgery at Landstuhl, issued the following statement on Barack Obama’s canceled visit to Ramstein and Landstuhl: “Last week, Senator Obama skipped a visit with wounded U.S. troops at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany because the Pentagon would not allow campaign staff or media to accompany him into the hospital. I served as director of trauma surgery at that hospital for nearly four years and saw the effect that a visit from a celebrity like Senator Obama could have on morale. During that time, I do not recall a single member of Congress canceling a visit with the troops despite being just a few hours away, but Senator Obama seems to have been more concerned with how the visit would affect him than how it would affect the soldiers recovering from wounds received in the service of their country.” No photo shots, no visit.

It seems as though St.Pete’s resident sister has more commonsense than St Pete has education. Education is not common sense, and for a person who claims to have worked their way through college, and do not recognize the same values in Obama is a pathetic display of the folly that first elected george Bush and gave him four more years and this country a nightmare that macain is seeking perpetuate. It was the educated that got us into Iraq and it was commonsense that was crying out not to go.People ! make your choice.

I am white 21 year old student and I want to get my degree, have a job and have a family one day. I want the future for that family without having my grand-children in some war. The blood of poor children in Iraq is on our hands, because we voted for Bush who created this war. We should not be able to sleep at night and yet we want the man who is the exact copy of Bush to create our future. Obama is new, yes, but he is the future, just as the youth has always been the future of America. He is also a peace maker. Lets not be the cynical nihilists who don’t believe that there is a better future in which we don’t make our politics by killing the innocent children who are somebody’s babies. Imagine you were in Iraq now, like the soldiers who don’t know against who they are fighting. Don’t you wish for a USA which will be loved by other countries again, a USA of hope that it once was. I never knew there will be a man with the potential to give us this hope again and than came Obama. He is the sublimation of all the things that America represents. Forget the race talks. Don’t you know that the races don’t exist, it is a human creation to divide people, but we differ only because of the surroundings that we evolutionary adapted to. Some black and white people can therefore genetically be more similar than two white people. What it comes to is ideas and good intentions and humanity.
Let’s not trust these war mongers again. Please vote for Obama and let me have a happy future.

I am tired of not counting so it is time others maybe not count as much as before. I will vote for him cause he will give us power to take what is ours. Neither candidate is doing anything about the massive incarceration of poor people and Black people in particular. They do not represent the interests of anyone but the very wealthy. Breaking out of the illusion that those candidates represent us–whether Black, white, Latino, Asian, Native, religious, atheist, men, women, gay, straight–is a GOOD thing. Voting for one of those jokers isn’t your only option. Get involved in changing the world is the best choice. Read Bob Avakian. Don’t base your choices on illusions–base your actions on understanding that we live under an inherently unequal system, that the ruling class parties won’t change that, and that something far better is necessary, and possible.

Elisa, your thoughts on race are from the 1990s. Ethnic groups definitely do exist on a level beyond the mere ‘social’. Race is certainly not a social construct. Even Richard Dawkins accepts this nowadays. There are traits and diseases that are biologically more common in certain ethnic groups. Whilst environment does play a part in shaping all humans, it isn’t everything. As for wishing that this election won’t be about race, you live in the most racially conscious nation in the world. All of your races are racist. I can’t talk to an American for 5 seconds without them(regardless of race) talking about ‘racism’. You lot are obsessed with finding ‘racism’ everywhere.

McCain’s strategy is to avoid media scrutiny and turn the election into a referendum on Obama. That only works when you’re behind and climbing. It doesn’t work when you’re the frontrunner.
In the primaries, we saw neither Obama nor McCain perform their best when they were frontrunners, but we also saw both perform well when they were closing in from behind.
This might be like a NASCAR race. The place to be is just behind the lead car with a lap or two to go.

“Mack….the Obamacons are just upset today because Obammy is falling in the polls and McCain is moving ahead. I agree with Luther, when McCain gets ahead, it will be over for Obammy.”
They’re clinging to their Messiah and CNN polls, the same way that typical Americans cling to their guns and religion.

Mack – when McCain moves ahead, it will force everyone to ask who is McCain?
Right now we don’t know. We thought we did, but the only thing clear right now is the 2008 version of McCain ain’t the same as the 2000 version.
Who is John McCain?

The protester got to ask the second question, which Obama then answered, point by point? Wow! Any bets on how long it would have taken McCain’s security people to throw those people out of the hall? I put my money on 40 seconds, tops.
Obama is the man.

Paul….good analogy…..I didn’t think of it that way…thanks for your input. However, even with all of his pro-media coverage, rock stardom, and European travels, it still amazes me , just as in the primaries, that Obama can not close the deal. There’s something to this and it is, I believe, that America is not buying into Obama’s credence on the policies and as a politician, which would include his inexperience.

International Peoples Democratic Uhuru Movement. Who are these people? Where are there offices? How many people belong to this organization? Who do they claim to represent? When was this organization started? How come no one has ever heard of them before? I think these are some fairly basic questions the author of this article might have tried to pursue before publishing this article. I suspect that like myself no one has ever heard of these people prior to this event, and this of course begs the questions, Why now and how did they manage to seat themselves in such a visually opportunistic place ? This smells of another Republican manipulation and abortion of truth!

Luther – Obama has gotten a lot of media coverage, but it hasn’t been ‘pro.’ Someone released a study a couple days ago showing that something like 72 percent of the coverage was negative.
That’s reporters following leads from the McCain camp. They are trying to make this election about Obama, rather than a referendum on Republican performance, and thus far successfully pointing the media in that direction.
Case in point – your question. Why can’t Obama close the deal? Where did that line originate? From Clinton. And now McCain’s folks are using it. And the media picks it up, where you hear it. And now you’re asking it.
Consider the merits of that question. Here’s a guy who just recently clinched his party’s nomination, facing a war hero with universal name awareness who clinched that party’s nomination months ago. And that’s not even getting into any racial speculation. Maybe the question should be why can’t McCain close the deal.

The Obama supporters, especially CNN and MSNBC, were only too happy to report over and over again that 99% of African Americans were supporting Obama. Now, Jesse Jackson has come out to denounce Obama, black protesters are challenging him, and I see more and more supporters recanting thier votes for him. You would think that African Americans would be totally in support of Obama, but they aren’t. Why, listen to what the protestor asked Obama. Did Obama give a clear answer, no he didn’t. Obama has painted himself in a corner and Americans have seized the proverbial “brush” and are closing in on his flip flopping and lies. I see McCain and Obama continue to be close in the polls, but in the end, I honestly feel it will be McCain who comes away with the win!

On Social Security, I’m still out in left field on this one, because, McCain won’t give a direct answer. Actually, neither McCain or Obama will solidify their stance. As a 50 yr old, this is very important to me. Again, this is an issue that needs to be addressed by both candidates, along with a lot of other issues. But to answer, I actually don’t know McCain’s stance. I could lie and argue, but the truth is the most important thing to expose.

We have a lot more seniors these days than we did in years ago, thanks to medical miracles and such. I have inlaws that are barely making it on their social security and whatever savings they have. My wife and I have 3 kids in college and help out as much as possible, but its tough, real tough. I know I’m speaking to the choir, but both of these candidates need to address the issues at home, that we are facing each and everyday. Just my opinion.
Posted by: Luther | August 1, 2008, 2:11 pm 2:11 pm
Part of it is simple demographics, too. We have a lot of baby boomers (like you) approaching retirement, and I think the first of them is already there.
Obama is clear on preserving Social Security. He hasn’t specified how and has signaled a willingness to talk about all options.
This isn’t rocket science. It will either be through reduced benefits, delayed benefits, increased revenue, or outside funding. I think Obama is open to any combination that can achieve consensus, except the outside funding (which couldn’t achieve consensus anyway).
With McCain, I don’t know where he is. He suggested he was willing to increase revenue to fund the program, and that after calling the entire funding system for the program a disgrace – the aspect that its paid for by younger workers.
Why would he want to raise taxes to preserve a disgraceful program? Maybe when he’s the frontrunner, the media will get around to asking him that.

Becky, I feel your pain. I wish, like you, we had something in print, from both candidates on the issues that we are facing daily….we all know what they are. If the candidates stances were in print, then we could hold them to them. Right now, both McCain and Obama have flip-flopped, and we, are suffering daily. This is ridiculous. ——————–
And Hilliary Clinton used, you know, and as you know, as we all know, you know before and after just about every sentence. And McCain? Says something HE thinks is clever, pauses, smirks, and waits for applause which rarely comes. Furthermore, McCain cannot remember what he said yesterday for the day before, sometimes he doen’t remember what he said 10 minutes ago. Also remember one of his handlers flatly stating that “McCAIN DOES NOT SPEAK FOR OUR CAMPAIGN”. Just who is actually speaking?? It looks like McCain is GIVEN a certain script to follow, a script his campaign has created and written, and because McCain does NOT follow the campaign’s script, he does NOT speak for the campaign!!! So the truth comes out…..EVERYTHING McCain is uttering/saying IS WHAT THE CAMPAIGN WANTS HIM TO SAY AND NOT WHAT MCCAIN BELIEVES ABOUT OUR ECONOMY, OILDRILLING, ETC., EVERYTHING IS THE CAMPAIGN’S IDEA AND NOT McCAINS. whew, talk about a FRAUD!! McCain IS a FRAUD, parroting his campaign heads’ ideas, but ideas which he himself does not believe and when he tries to insert HIS own ideas, the campaign states McCain is NOT SPEAKING FOR THE CAMPAIGN. Like I states, the TRUTH comes out in the open, thanks to McCain’s own campaign leaders. They are NOT “ALLOWING” the confused and inempt McCain to VOICE HIS OWN beliefs and solutions because HE WOULD make an even bigger fool of himself BECAUSE HE HAS NO IDEAS AND NO SOLUTIONS. What he is saying is merely parroting the campaign leaders!! Should he win the election, looks like Mr. Libberman will HAVE to sit right beside McCain to whisper the correct thing to do at any given time!!

But we also have to consider that 1) we haven’t proven we can live within our public means yet, 2) we’ve got a huge and growing debt as a result, 3) the tab on all this is coming, and 4) its reached the point where we most likely can’t balance the budget just by cutting discretionary spending.
So taxes are going to go up in the coming decades – probably to European levels – or else we’ll devalue the dollar to where we’re forced to scrap the currency and start over, like Germany once did, and we’ll pay off our debt with the worthless old dollars.
McCain’s claim to balance the budget in four years struck me as particulary silly. Either he doesn’t know better, at which point we have to ask why not, or he does know better and he’s just lying to us.

Let’s face it, IF Obama was 100% WHITE, instead of 50% WHITE and 50% BLACK, we would not be having all the bigotry and racism which has crawled out of the woodwork and the swamps. What these people hold AGAINST Senator Obama is his Kenyan (black) heritage. I do not say the color of his SKIN because Senator Obama’s skin is NOT black but rather that “honey-hued” color that SO MANY WHITES spend thousands upon thousands of dollars lying in tanning beds, tanning lotions, spas, and the beach resorts, to attain!! Isn’t this ironic? Look around an take note of those beautifully tanned people, they are WHITE with similar skin color to Obama’s skin color. The only difference is that Senator Obama does not have to spend thousands on his “honey-hued natural tan”. :)

NinaK – I have to disagree. This is all about power, and little else. Two groups want the office, and only one will get it.
In that quest for power, they’ll use pretty much anything they can to sway the few percentage points of truly independent voters who are actually up for grabs.
Its not a black/white thing. Its whatever can be done to get the win for our side. I’d guess if the Republicans were running an African-American and the Democrats were running an old white guy, we’d see the same posts on these blogs – just from different people.
That said, McCain has said some truly whacky things this time. I’m looking forward to when the media gets around to asking him about some of that.

Nina – good point, regarding how its not Obama supporters calling him messianic.
We know he’s a politician. We just like him better than the other ones this time around.
But consider what that attack is really saying. It sounds to me like its borne out of frustration to find something else to attack. So Obama’s supporters attack their own inability to find anything of consequence wrong… “if we can’t find something else, he must be too perfect for his own good.” Thus the Messiah stuff.
Its the same thing, I believe, behind the over-confident attack. “Obama didn’t seem overwhelmed on the foreign stage, so if he wasn’t overwhelmed he must be over-confident.”

Luther, I can see you are PRO McCain and that is okay, just as it A-OK for Obama supporters to be for Senator Obama. Please do not call Senator Obama a flip-flopper especially when McCain has already gone on record tht he is the most flipflopping candidate. He is also the one candidate that has missed more votes during the campaigning season—61%—-to Obama’s 48% and Hilliary’s 42%. Looks like McCain has had very little time to return to Washington and vote on important issues. This in itself is very telling about McCain and how serious he takes his elected office of responsiblity by his state folks. He boasts he has taken NO earmarks for the State of Arizona…guess he has done nothing to improve the infrastructure and bettermen of that state. McCain equals “me, myself, and I” and NOONE else matters. Google John McCain and the Black Mesa. This will give you a good insight of just how much McCain cares about himself and how little he thinks of humanity!

First of all, the polls are bs for the most part. The reason why they keep the polls so close is to keep the whole excitement and race going. (how do you actually poll people who have never voted before?)
Drama=Ratings=Advertising
As for the idiots who protested at the town hall, if anything they helped Obama to show that he isnt going to be a “BLACK” activist (i.e. Al Sharpton – Jessie Jackson). This actually will make some more of undecided WHITE voters who were unsure of his stance more comfortable.
Obama is not the best speaker in the world and his studdering is annoying as f#@$, but he seems to have the potential to bring people together even overseas. How in the hell do you get 200,000 people to come see you. Plus, McCain has to many health issues so his VP will most likely take over.

No one is talking about the big issue and proposal of his speech today – an economic stimulus package of $1,000 per adult.
Please, put aside your personal feelings about Obama and consider this proposal from a nameless, faceless person. It could be McCain, your neighbor, even Bush (he was behind the first stimulus check), and say what you think about the concept.
Do you think it would help stimulate the economy? On a personal level, what would you do if you received a $1,000 check in the mail? How would you spend it?

I recently moved to St. Pete from Miami, and I noticed right away that racial tensions in this city are so thick you can cut them with a knife. Particularly because you have groups like the Uhurus who perpetuate racial stereotypes with their Africancentric militant behavior, and a large number of white supremacist that use this area as their breeding ground.
However, I have noticed that each Obama event that my children and I attend, in Tampa Bay everyone is pleasant, and courteous and there is always a sense of comeraderie. The event today was no exception. If you pay attention to the video, the crowd began to chant “Yes we can” in unison to drown Olugbala out. Basically because St. Pete, in my opinion, is a microcosm of what is going on around the country. People are in need of a real change, and are tired of these entities that attempt to use race to keep us divided and from the real issues at hand; like a failing economy, the fading middleclass, and a perpetual war. All of which effect everyone, not just African Americans.
Besides as someone else has commented, Obama is running for President of the United States, not the NAACP. Therefore, I suggest that Olugbala vote for McCain if he doesn’t like Obama’s response! Let’s see how far that will get him. McCain doesn’t care about black people! He voted against making MLK’s birthday a holiday! So how many black issues does Olugbala think McCain will address in his administration? Olugbala’s protest is a joke and holds no merrit! He only wanted his 15 minuites He saw an opportunity to get on TV, and he got what he wanted.

Obama received a strong dose of reality from the Black Community today in St. Pete.
They know he only cares about becoming President and could care less about them.
When he was in the Middle East he didn’t have time to shake hands with our Troops or visit the wounded.
President?? Commander-In-Chief??
Not this time around Senator. You and Hilary can share a crying towel.

Simply put, neither of these guys should really be voted into the office of President. Why? Because they’re both politicians. As such, their ONLY true concern is to get elected.
Don’t believe me? Then why are BOTH candidates running such negative adds? All they’re doing now is pointing fingers, saying “He started it.”
What this country really needs is a Constitutionalist. Just follow the Constitution. Nothing more, nothing less.
BTW, for those that didn’t know, the President has only 2 REAL jobs:
1. He is the Commander-in-Chief (i.e., he’s the head of all the military)
2. He is the head of the Executive branch, meaning he is to ENFORCE the current laws.
We Americans have completely forgotten what our Federal government was meant to do: REPRESENT THE PEOPLE! Instead of voting in people willing to speak plainly and do what they say, we simply throw our hands up in the hair and complain “This candidate represents ‘Big Oil’” or “That candidate is too pro-Union”.
Realistically, we need to get rid of lobbyists and the ONLY way to do so is for the average man to run locally, institute term limits, and then run nationally and do the same. Oh, and passing laws to ELIMINATE lobbyists would help too.
Ahhh…but how to do so without trampling on the rights of our fellow Man? Simple: ENFORCE THE LAWS THAT ARE IN THE U.S. CONSTITUTION!
In conclusion, what we need to do is actually read AND understand the Constitution BEFORE we ever vote for any candidate. Then we need to demand that anyone that is asking to represent us in government adhere to those same Constitutional laws, or else they get bounced out on their arse.
BTW, got news for everyone: Neither Obama NOR McCain are Constitutionalists.

Obama has told Jews what he is going ot do for them.
He has told Illegal Immigrants he is going to give them amnesty and free health care.
Why shouldnt he tell blacks what he is going to do for them. He wants their votes, right?

Blacks dont have to vote for Obama if he doesn’t speak to their issues.
Cynthia McKinney is the alternative. Everyone knows that Obama doesnt have to speak to blacks since he knows that blacks are going to vote for him anyway.

I hope the Duhuru movement got enough money for their antics. You can easily tell when something is staged. They don’t even believe the garbage that they spouted. Swift boating is alive and well. However, the senator handled it without mooning them and tell them what to kiss. I love America. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, all i have to say is, do these same people go and ask McCain the same questions? do they really think McCain gives a damn about the black community. im a black woman and i understand that Barack Obama isn’t running for president ONLY TO HELP BLACK PEOPLE, yes he will once he gets there, but we need to see that he’s trying to help AMERICA AS A WHOLE!!! I am sorry, but Mr. Obama does not inspire confidence in me. I am not a cynic, I am just as idealistic as (I believe) the majority of Americans, but I do not think Mr. Obama has been around long enough to have a demonstrated track record. And, when his cronies shout down (or otherwise discourage) a rare opportunity for him to address an un-scripted question from “the town”…he’s dropped the ball. But, I am sure that in three or four days, he will issue a statement that is 180 degrees opposite what came out of his mouth reflexively, as if that should appease the african students. Frankly, I think the only thing his style should cause us to do is ask ourselves if we really want to drink the koolaid and vote for a nationwide and worldwide Jonestown.

you know what in the world is going on here. It seems like people want him to be more black or more white. Hes mixed. Just because hes educated, mannerable, respectful, well dressed, rich, and is a stand up dad is he then not black enough. He’s an example of what people of color can do. We in this generation were not slaves and or parents arent either. People really get on my nerves, okay lets go there with the jena 6, they jumped a white boy, six of them. sure they were treated unfairly but even if they did the same thing to a black boy why were they jumping him. for the record im black so lets not have anyone thinking im a racist. as well where were the parents at while the jumping was going on. now we can be there for trial but we wont tell them to get to the house before the street lights come on and limit what they do with their free time. two hurrican katrina obama was not the president of the us, and i dont we as black people sending these questions to mccain as if its not relevant for him to answer because hes white. and three i wish protesters would shut the hell up,if black people or anyone is on welfare its is because they want to be, this is not jim crow or slavery you have opportunities like everyone else. what you do with that opportunity is not a product of your enviornment its about your mind state and what you choose to do in life. now if you choose to drop out of school have children and go on welfare thats your business but is obama supposed to be responsible because hes a candidate of color and our eople are waisting there opportunties. that ridiculous. now before anyone says thats easy for you to do . check my record 5 kids, college educated, 7 years at the same job, income over 40000, AND NOT ON WELFARE. Its about your mentality. Get your self together dont be mad at obama because he worked for his, wanna talk about someone else look at this wife, well educated and a strong woman of color and shes not mixed.

It’s amazing how people are overlooking the fact that all the young man said was of no importance. None of his complains were based on anything factual. Obama handled the hecklers extremely well.
As an African American who has followed this race closely from day one, I see through this poorly executed low budget theatrical production designed to stir up doubts in African Americans minds about an Obama presidency as well as the intention of the hecklers to stir up non-African American’s suspicions and fear of a non-white president looking out for their needs.
People you are all being manipulated to engage in ugly discussions. It’s race baiting! Stop taking the worm off of the hook.
This young man was a plant along with his friends. Enough said.

My issue is not with obama it is with these idiots who are so pro black that they can’t see that a person of color like themselves is runing for the highest office in the land and can not address just the people of color alone he is taken on the responsibility of everyone of ever race and religion in this free country. Brothers like them Jesse,Al,and Rev Wright do not speak for me or the majority of african american in this country. What they need to do with all of that energy is to get there own back yard clean before they come outside. Obama ignore there asses. Put them kind of people in your review mirror and keep driving ahead to the white house so that you can get this country back to where it needs to be. On top…Peace
p.s I AM A BROTHA TOO!

This issue is simply idiotic. So there were some insignificant people trying to heckle Obama in Florida. What is the big deal about that?! People get real!! I’m sure there is other important things going on to talk about!
Just like Obama told those guys “you have choices”, so do we all. You can vote for Obama or McCain!!!

Obama is so assured of the Presidency and thinks the election is a wasteful exercise. They’ll practically just “stamp pad” the ballot. No wonder he has his transition team ready, the presidential seal, the state visit to Europe, meeting with head of States, vetting his Cabinet, and drawing up his grandiose plans. All these while American families are suffering economically. He wants McCain to discuss the issues, i.e his promises against McCain’s record.

I am a black woman, 43 years old, why don’t black men stop complaining and contribute to their own community, instead of shouting at other people to do something, why don’t black folks get together is solve their own issues.

@ Phelpsie: A portion of your quote, “And, when his cronies shout down (or otherwise discourage) a rare opportunity for him to address an un-scripted question from “the town”…he’s dropped the ball. But, I am sure that in three or four days, he will issue a statement that is 180 degrees opposite what came out of his mouth reflexively, as if that should appease the african students.” demonstrates your inability to COMPREHEND your OWN comment! Hunh??
Did you NOT see the entire clip above?? Presidential candidate, Senator Obama, wouldn’t permit the hecklers to further derail his Town Hall speech but did allow the Uhuru representative the opportunity to air concerns afterward during the question/answer portion. Senator Obama chose not to have the 3 men removed & decided earlier that he would address their question/s.
Posted by: APR | August 3, 2008, 5:47 pm 5:47 pm
… cont. @ Phelpsie: The Senator responded to a series of UNRELATED (other than a Black racial connection) questions that were thrown at him by what I regard as a political “plant”. The questions were non-sensical & had the Uhuru group/organization exercised the option of research, they would have had their answers. The key is they were not seeking answers but rather the publicity from successfully smuggling in a banner displaying their image as well as unsettling a usually very settled & smooth Senator Obama.
Pointless. In stark contrast, Senator Obama appeared [and is] the highly educated, worldly & much qualified visionary to the office of the president of the United States.
What their efforts produced was little sympathy for their cause (whatever it really is) & the need for more education of Black &/or African men in this country. Even 8 & 9 year olds know how to GOOGLE for basic & even pretty explicit information!

It is alot of people on here who do not want Obama to win!!!! LOL!!!! Don’t loose any sleep at night when he does SO GET OVER IT!!!! Just like the black men who stood up only a person with very low intelligence will vote for John McCain looking at the current status our country is in. He will not get my vote even if Obama was not running. And it wouldn’t have been Hillary Clinton because she lies thru her damn teeth. For all who are against Obama how do you think John McCain would have handled it or better yet how would you have handled it? John McCain has a temper and he would have gotten pissed. People want to discredit Obama any way they can to take attention off the real issue at hand that they are racist and don’t want to have a black “Commander In Chief”. So go ahead and vote for Jerk McCain and repeat the mess we have had for the last couple of years. You all amuse me you want to complain about Obama but have anyone of you stepped up to the plate to be head of a country who is in disaray and evey other country hates. I didn’t thin so. While Obama was trying to address these hoodlums in a way a true leader does, John McCain was trying to compare his mass followers status to celebrities. Which one is what a leader portrays, being startled and trying to answer a question of a citizen or taking the dummies money who supported McCain to put a negative video together about nothing. We as Americans are so ignorant on so many things and Obama shows that he will try to bring us together as “One nation under God”. John McCain and his party will continue to send our loves ones across seas to fight a senseless war, pay other countries money he doesn’t even invest in his owns country economy. You people need to wake up and get your heads out of the Republicans asses and John McCain’s ass. To the Hillary Clinton voters-GET OVER IT SHE LOST MONTHS AGO!!!! You want someone with more experience, your first time on your first job did you have any experience? No, dummies you get that by doing the duties of that position!!!! Hell, Obama will make a perfect president!!!! George Bush had the experience and had his father to fall back on for feedback and what did he do? doodly squat!!!! GO OBAMA!!!!!!!

The hot issues for EVERYONE right now are (not in any particular order)
1- the economy, jobs, the mortgage crisis
2- the cost of gas
3- peace in the Middle East, the war in Iraq and potentially Iran and others; terrorism at home and abroad
4- the environment
5- health care
6- food prices
7- education
8- immigration
… “and liberty and justice for all”, etc…
The common element which can be used to address all these concerns is the same color – green – and that is $$$ MONEY $$$.
Enough of the personal attacks – attacks on the candidates, attacks on each other here in this forum just for voicing one’s opinion. That’s the problem with Americans – this lack of regard for others. That’s why we’re in the mess we’re in now. We’re not better than anyone else. We’re not smarter than anyone else. We’re not stronger than anyone else. We’re not invincible nor are we above reproach.
Quite honestly, it’s not really about the candidates themselves. It’s about who they run with, who is backing them; ultimately the decisions will be made by the ones who back the candidate.
We’ve already seen what the Bush administration has done in these areas and I’m sure many honest folks will agree that they’re not really digging where we are right about now, not individually and definitely not collectively as a nation, let alone on the world stage.
Attack the issues and not the candidate.
McCain lies to the People constantly about the current state of affairs, insulting our intelligence, as if we can’t see how much lighter our pockets are, how much more unsafe we feel, how hosed up everything is. We’re not OK! The current administration has made many poor choices. What we need – We need to move on. We need to turn the page. We need to handle our business as a people, as a civilized society, in a more responsible manner, using with the best information available from experts in those areas, people on the ground who get their hands dirty. We don’t need distortions or lies.
Stop obscuring the issues. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and “get ‘er done”.

First off let me say that I am an Obama supporter, yes I am female and I am a black woman. I am getting so sick and tired of both blacks and whites turning this election into a race issue. It’s not about race, it’s about which senator represents your belief and who you feel will run this country effectively. I could care less if they were black or white, male or female..it’s not a race or gender issue people!!! I am so sick of black people feeling like this man owes them something. If anything we owe him(a thank you), he has shown us that we have no limitations in this world. This black man running for president is part of what people both black and white fought for in the Civil Right Era..meaning equal opportunity…which means allowing a person to have a chance at ALL opportunities, yes even allowing a black person to run for president. If this man wins the election for me, it’s not about catering to one race needs. I see it as a positive influence on the youth of today. At least the youth have someone other than a rapper or ball player to look up to.He has also given hope to mothers who are raising children alone that their children does have a chance at a better life. I think having a black man run for president sends a message to all youth that anything is possible. I hear my grandparents’ say that they never thought they would live to see a black man run for president. This notion implies that a change is in progress. Obama running in this election lift some many limitations that otherwise may not have been present, at least not this year. People no matter who you are voting for let’s be respectful of each other decision. If you don’t like him, don’t vote for him, there is no need to talk about this man in a negative way. I am not a McCain supporter but I have never spoken harsh about the man. He has his views and I have mine, all I can do is respect it. Regardless of what anyone may say, this election is turning out record numbers in the polls, which leaves me with the hope that people will continue to follow politics and exercise their right to vote and hopefully one day a person who stands for everything they believe in will run for office. Obama may not win the election but he has been a powerful force in advocating for a better and positive change, something that is much needed in this country.

If it is up to those making comments here, everyone would be forced into submission to the ‘news’ media. But, the ‘news’ media is biased about any conservative threat to hold its people accountable, so the ‘news’ media just does not report anything out of line with its ulterior motives.
That fact is found in a letter sent to family and friends by a soldier assigned to protect sen. Obama, on his recent visit to Iraq. Here is that soldier’s story, and a factual parallel I make that is taken from current and past political history.
McCain can and will rant politically about Obama, but his remarks cause very little damage to Obama’s Image, compared to the massive damage Obama’s own irrational, erratic actions and words are causing his fiction-based political image.
This is so clear to those who care to examine his character with objective, simple values of integrity. On his trip to Iraq’s embattled troops, one soldier assigned to secure his safety sent a letter that entailed Obama’s open separation from and disdain for enlisted troops, walking right past every one wanting to shake his hand, even though there was plenty of time, an it is a tradition for all visiting Celebes to do. Instead, Obama ignored every outstretched hand, and briskly walked into the VIP recreation center, where he had comfort, high-level attention, and reporters with ‘news’ cameras. No ‘news’ camera showed him ignoring the common soldiers.
Personally, after watching politics since President Eisenhower’s election campaign, I am appalled at the way America votes today! With computers that enable quick and graphic analysis of actions in every part of our land, it is clear that the majority of Democratic Party voters vote in the High-crime centers of the USA. Geographically speaking, it is roughly 8% of the Geophysical area of our Nation that Obama has his support from. Is this fair representation? Not even close!
That same geographical section of America also has the lowest representation in our Peace-keeping Armed Forces, as Liberals actively seek to abandon our national safety, preferring a life of government handouts to living self-sufficient. War against any enemy is anathema for that minority, who raise loud, raucous protests against those who would rather die protecting America, than allow Murderous Religious Pagans to rape, pillage, and shred their loved ones, homes, and community.
It is not coincidental that the High-crime, High Democratic Population centers also favor altered morals, morals that demand annihilation of the ancient, sustainable mother-father family base, where father is the primary home and community husband, protector, and financial foundation.
High-crime has only one moral focus, and it is Not for others’ best interests, a characteristic trait of every individual Democrat I have met in my 60+ years. This mindset is precisely what Obama displayed during his visit to his freedom protectors, on duty in Iraq. What would he care about their safety, if he were President?
Far worse, what does he care about anyone he would rule over here at home?

first of all Obama is a way better candidate then McCain will ever be. McCain clearly gets caught up in all his speeches with matters that he has no knowledge of and then tries to flip his speech to downgrade Mr.Obama further more this Uhuru group is a joke why did they have their phone number on the flyer what was that for free publicity…give me a break. When their are two white candidates do we not vote because we say they will not represent the black community very well so then why because Obama is biracial do we give him such a hard time as a candidate, why is race always a factor in this country when we are all human wanting the same things in life for our families….

As a Canadian watching the blacks from Jesse Jackson to that bum Bob Johnson to the fools @ Uhuru Movement who were interupting Obama, I have to say
YOU ARE TEARING the black community apart with your stupid rhetoric & fraudalant self interest actions
Obama has to deal with all the women & Red necks in the south who will never vote for a black man & now he’s continually dealing with INFIGHTING in his own community & party, you idiot’s have to realize to win the election & try to get your poor ass country out of the mess it’s in he has to appeal to ALL RACES not just blacks which he’s trying to do, but the selfserving foools like BOB Johnson, Jeremiah Wright & Jesse Jackson who can’t letgo of there EGO & 15 mins of fame make me sick, as a previous poster stated (HP Boston “Let’s see how much progress the AA community makes under a McCain administration.
Have you not learned from Katrina?)
You so called Black leaders should be rallying behind Obama rather than tearing him down, put your country & your race above the all mighty dollar…& to you fools who were backing H.Clinton & now say I’m voting for MCcain, You don’t know how foolish you look… your voting with your heart not your head you basically don’t give a rats ass about your country b/c OBAMA & CLINTON BASICALLY HAVE THE SAME PLATFORM with very minor differences compared to MCCAIN who wants to keeps your asses in IRAQ & continue the Republican agenda of taxing all middle class to death..so go & vote for MCCAIN, but when your houses continue to be Repossesed & your dollar is worth nothing & the poor r getting poorer & oh ya the Chinease & Arabs own all your assets in your country then go to ur leaders who are brainwashing you & cry that it’s the white man fault.
Pathetic
I wish we had a leader like OBAMA in Canada

What I think that many African Americans fail to realize is that Obama is actually trying to win and trying to represent “us” well. With that being said, America IS a majority white country. Obama can not have speeches that are solely focused on African Americans and our problems ALL THE TIME because then the majority will not have his vote. He has to be well rounded– speaking on issues that effect all races and backgrounds. No white person is going to vote for a Black Militant. Let Obama win his way and who knows, later once he already has the title, he may be more aggressive and outwardly expressive of black issues. I think he is a wonderful person and he knows exactly what he’s doing. He is trying to avoid all of the controversy, he’s not trying to seem like a black militant because his competition and other white spectators will be quick to jump the gun and accuse him of using this so called “race card.” Let him do it his way. GO OBAMA!

I don’t understand all these repub. on here trash talking Obama…We all love this country, right? and he wants to make things better here. Don’t you agree the country is in a bad state and has been for the past 8 Bush years?
Obama loves this country and wants to do what’s right and put the country back on track. Why hate on him so much. At least be respectful and say you don’t agree with his views.

No matter what one does, there will always be those that you cannot satisfy. This guy made a scene because Obama didn’t respond to the issues the way he wanted him to. That is insane.
Let us not forget that the game being played is politics. There are certain ways a candidate is suppose to handle a situation. Now if Obama handled the issues in an Al Sharpton manner he wouldn’t stand a chance in the general election.
People do not want to give Obama the credit he is due. And face it, all you Republicans don’t stand a chance of your candidate getting elected. To be honest the only reason he is even running is because the Republican party is trying to save face. Bush messed up the Republican party for years to come.
So in response to all of you who has said Obama is toxic, evil, etc., all I have to say is “YES WE CAN!!!!!”

You can’t please all the people all the time. We have leaders in the community that can take care of these issues. He is running for The Presidency! We want him to stand up there and say he is black and he is proud. Which he has, but as far as making sure he fights ALL of our battles is a bit much to ask of a man. Obama was letting him know that he can choose another candidate that suits his liking if he chooses. That is the beauty of America. He has fought for us as African Americans, he is fighting for us as African Americans just by running for President.

I agree with the first blogger. Obama addressed these issue upon them taking place, why didn’t they ask Bush what he planned to do? Bush is president “now”. there are so many people that take the fact that an African American is running for President,it’s an honor but people want to limit him to being a nominee just for blacks. He came out in the beginning speaking on behalf of Americans overall. He won’t be able to satisfy everyone you can best believe that, but if you want things to remain the same then vote for McCain and you’ll be protesting fulltime for the next 4 years. Obama is not a “god”. He’s a man with an agenda that’s not personal or limited to blacks or that excludes them. People grow up and stop mouthing off for 15 min. of fame.

I would not vote for Mccain no matter what! He is a sad excuse for a President. A vote for Mccain is the continuation of the same Bush policies. We vote McCain in coz we hate Obama and then when times are going to be hard, we will whine, whine and complain while we are the ones who put McCain in power. Obama offers different and a bright future and I’m on his bandwagon. What has McCain done in politics other that flip flopping and when time comes for him to run, he yells out at other people for the mistakes he made for the 26 years he made in Washington. We vote for Mccain, we deserve what we get and let us not even open our mouths to whine and complain.
As for the black man complaining, if he was educated and had something to do, he would have seen things differently. He is looking for someone to blame for his choices that failed him. Obama has nothing to do with them. He should get a life!

As a young black person, i am really appalled by this whole thing. People are always asking what about the black community? Well what is the black community going to do about the black community? Why does it have to be someone elses issue instead of OUR own. I really don’t think that it should be left up to a president or a presidential candidate to fix issues within the black commuity. The black community needs to stand up and and make changes for advancement of the black community.
Why didn’t the protesters do the same thing to McCain or Bush for that matter? So either they will vote for Obama, vote for McCain, or not vote at all. If they don’t vote at all they are helping the ISSUE. So go ahead and show the rest of our young black adults it dosen’t matter it you vote.
That’s helping the balck community.
Obama’s got my vote.

“Is black America Ready to Embrace Obama?”
The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, no balls, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.
He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Arab, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Arabic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya . Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he pretends he is exclusively.
What he isn’t, not a genetic drop of, is ‘African-American,’ the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn’t a single ancestor who was a slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.
Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners. Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.
It’s something Hillary doesn’t understand – how some complete neophyte came out of the blue and stole the Dem nomination from her. Obamamania is beyond politics and reason. It is a true religious cult, whose adherents reject Christianity yet still believe in Original Sin, transferring it from the evil of being human to the evil of being white.
Thus Obama has become the white liberals’ Christ, offering absolution from the Sin of Being White. There is no reason or logic behind it, no faults or flaws of his can diminish it, no arguments Hillary could make of any kind can be effective against it. The absurdity of Hypocrisy Clothed In Human Flesh being their Savior is all the more cause for liberals to worship him: Credo quia absurdum, I believe it because it is absurd.
Thank heavens that the voting majority of Americans remain Christian and are in no desperate need of a phony savior.
His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any straight thinking American.
Pass this on to every straight thinking American you know!

Some say the Republican ticket is scary? I guess Rev. Wright is normal. What about Bill Ayers? Obama scars me because of his associations and policies. I guess it’s o.k. to kill living children if they were meant to be aborted (See Obama’s Freedom of Choice Act). Why don’t you do some research on Obama?
WE HAVE NO ONE TO VOTE FOR!!! McLame can barely be called the lesser of two evils. Hillary would have destroyed McLame. Now I have to vote 3rd party because I refuse to vote for the war hawk or the crazy terrorist loving, baby killing Obama.
By the way, I am from a mixed family and my brother is black. Those of you who think I am racist because I won’t vote for Obama should ask themselves why 98% of blacks will vote for Obama. MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE HE’S BLACK!
WAKE UP AMERICA, WE NEED A THIRD PARTY. DO SOME RESEARCH AND DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING THE MEDIA TELLS YOU!!!!!

Two points: 1. At least Obama will listen to and answer a hostile question from someone who is not a supporter. McCain and Palin only give general answers to pre-scripted questions from loyal followers. Who has the courage to confront and lead?
2. To RepublicanAndProudofIt. Good for you. I, too, (a hard working mom with small kids) put myself through school and am working in a good job. But have you figured out yet that McCain’s tax plan calls for taxing your medical benefits at your job like income? That’s right. Look at the article (not blog) by Robert Berg in the NY Times. McCain will treat benefits like income and TAX them. That will completely swallow up the 3% cut he proposes for the middle class. Obama cuts taxes by 5% on the middle class and doesn’t touch benefits. So, you’re for giving the super-rich (many like Paris Hilton who didn’t earn their fortune) big tax breaks and then let the government tax your health benefits away. Will your employer really increase your salary so you can pay for it yourself or will he just offer you the choice – pay the taxes, give up the insurance or give up the job? LOL

Mike: This doesn’t sound like any Republican connection to me. It sounds much more like Obama’s playground.
InPDUM is a grassroots organization, led by the black working-class community. It was founded in 1991 in Chicago by the African People’s Socialist Party. InPDUM membership is open to anyone united with democracy for the African community and that self-determination is the highest expression of democracy.
InPDUM is known and respected around the world for demanding reparations to African people for slavery and colonialism, demanding an end to the police containment of our communities, pushing for real economic development instead of more police, protecting the dignity of our children as intelligent, capable and talented human beings, and taking the right stand on many other issues that face the African community, even when it is unpopular to do so.
