Republicans Protest Congressional Vacation as Gas Prices Soar

Who said congress went on vacation? They all went to get a piece of pie from zero-bama, and an electric plug-in hybrid, which will solve the energy need for the future of this country.
Who needs drilling, nuclear energy.

Sad that Pelosi would label a serious effort by certain members of Congress to actually face this problem, rather than just hope it goes away, as a “hoax.” In fact, her gestapo tactics and decision to just shut Congress down for a month, all while the nation continues to endure record-high prices on everything from food to oil, are the only thing “unworthy of serious debate.” That’s because there is no debate to be made: House democrats are spineless America-hating opportunists with no serious answers to any of the major challenges facing our nation. Like their presumptive Presidential nominee, they are all show and no substance.

Where is that electricity going to come from? Catch lightning bolts? Wind turbines can generate 1.5mW each; at that rate you need about 900 to equal a good size nuclear power plant or oil/coal burner. Get real people.
Safe and efficient. And not as ugly.

Why can’t we simply move past all of the partisan politics? I read an article earlier that in a nutshell stated that this is just part of Nancy’s master plan and that they (the Democrat party) doesn’t need to deal with any of this until after the November elections.

“Guerrilla oratory?” Is that mainstream press code for “paying attention to the 75%+ of Americans who want drilling here and now?” Would a Democrat gesture to alleviate energy costs (nonexistent, BTW) ever be characterized in such a way in an alleged ‘objective’ news outlet like ABC News?
So where’s Nancy? The people want to drill, and she’s nowhere to be found. Didn’t she promise lower gas prices during her tenure, which were supposed to go into effect over a year ago? What of that, Nancy? Democrats? All talk and no walk, just as with everything else they promised in 2006?
Enjoy those 8% approval ratings, Nancy. The GOP in its worst hours could never get the meter to register that low. You and your fellow clowns in Congress You’re making Bush look popular.

Electric plug in? Remember as soon as that became possible the Dems started talking about Hybrids instead…. as soon as those get more common it will be something else. Remember when Smog and Acid rain were wiped out by scrubbers that only left water vapor and carbon dioxide as US emissions? As soon as that happened they said carbon dioxide was the big problem… I guess water vapor is next. It’s always something else.
Pelosi doesn’t want to solve the problem, she just wants to be able to keep using it. Same with Social Security. Same reason they said how bad Iraq was to run on it then did nothing, and now that the Surge worked they still poo poo it but do nothing about it. Just criticise everything scream about no one fixing it, get elected…. then go on vacation and try to shut up anyone else who is trying to fix things.

I cancelled my vacation this year because of gas prices. First time in seven years I haven’t sat on the beach at Tahoe this week. Congress sucks.

Why should the democratic controlled congress risk actually being “wrong” about energy by allowing for an aggressive domestic drill program? The subsequent rebound in oil futures due to lower volatility would make them look bad.
As it stands, they are convinced that in November not only will they gain more seats, but that with Obama as the POTUS there will be nothing to stop them come January.
Arrogant, presumptive, but true. These people fail to recognize that their job description is REPRESENTATIVE in nature. If 75% of the American people are supporting increased domestic oil production it is not their job to stonewall the process and tell us why we’re wrong.
We need to pursue every viable form of domestic energy, and since oil is proven and available, that is a necessary part of the solution. We aren’t going to replace a quarter of a BILLION gasoline burning vehicles on our US roads any time soon.

Bravo Republicans! You Dems have to admit the Republicans are right. Why are they on vacation while middle America is getting killed at the pumps? I thought you were for the people? I guess not. In addition, High Gas prices are killing consumer spending and hurting the economy. I guess you think that that is just dandy huh?

Just imagine if the USA drilled for new oil, our autos beceme more efficent and we developed nuclear power plants. Our country would become the envy of the world.

On January 2nd, 2007, two days before Pelosi and Reid took control of Congress, Sweet Crude Oil was selling for $52.00 a barell and corn was selling for $ 2.00 a bushel. Oil got as high as $147.00 per barrel and corn went as high as $8.00 per bushel. This is the Democrats idea of a Energy Policy.

I’ve snailmailed, emailed and faxed all the House Republican members that have stayed in Washington, DC, commending them on their actions.
I’ve written and faxed our President asking him to force the H of R and the Senate to return to DC to resume work on an energy policy.
I’ve written and faxed all representatives (notice that’s not capitalized) who left on vacation and left issues unresolved.
Have they forgotten that we, the people, pay their salaries?
My boss wouldn’t allow me to vacation if there was unfinished business; why should OUR employees?
As for Pelosi………..she’s a disgrace. She’s not done one thing she promised to do when the Dems won control of the House. Turning out the lights, mikes, C-Span is the straw that….well, you know!

Speakers have been demoted for way less in the past. Why is this socialist still in power? We can make our opinion known by voting for conservatives in our local elections.

You would think Nancy would want to drill to reduce the cost of flying her private jet using thousands of gallons of jet fuel to fly home every weekend. But then she is one of the entitled ones that doesn’t care what it costs.

I do hope that people here know that Oil companies have leased land still that hasn’t been drilled on. I also hope that they know that there will not be any oil produced from this in at least 7 years. I do also hope they know that the one group that this benefits is the oil companies and not the consumer. I do also hope they know that according to Nascar, Schwarznegger, Joe Lieberman, Charlie Crist and the Bush govt, that keeping your tires inflated at the proper level will save more oil than this drilling would do. Obama’s idea of releasing some light crude from the Strategic Reserve might actually lower prices like they have in the past. Check out his plan announced yesterday. That is an energy plan not more drilling and my favorite, vague, “all of the above” approach by Mccain.
I wonder why Mccain was against drilling for more oil this entire time. He said that the situation now has made it necessary but all of Congress has had regular reports on Peak oil supplies for years, all of Congress is aware that our oil addiction has forced bad policy in relation to the middle east and venezuela because we need them, so clearly, if they were aware that this was going to happen, the time for acting on this ” more oil drilling” would have been seven years ago (which would have been possible cause bush-o and the repubs had control of congress at the time). If it were done then, we MIGHT have been able to see some of that oil now.
Is anyone going to seriously suggest that this drilling for more oil is not a gimmick for people who don’t understand what an energy crisis or energy policy is? (other than people who clearly don’t get what an energy crisis and energy policy is) Does anyone find it strange that the the day before Mccain’s oil drilling flip flop, the Hess family had a major fundraiser for him? Does anyone find it strange that Mccain got so much money from Oil men after he did the flip flop?

All those like Nancy, The One, and Algore who oppose drilling should not be sold petroleum based fuel for their airplanes and SUVs or fossil fuel or natural gas derived electricity for their homes. Let them see how far Algore’s G5 gets on wind or solar alternatives. SEND NANCY A DRILL BIT!

I have a very doubtful picture in my mind of the outcome of the November elections.
November is a long time away, and most Americans are to the point that they have very short lived attention spans.
There seem to be enough nuts in SF to keep Nancy at the taxpayer’s teat.
It seems that most in the Senate are either too scared of her, or agree with her to remove her from the Speaker’s seat.
Unless either side has enough of a majority in the House or Senate, everything will just end up in a stalemate and only worthless, non-important legislation will be passed.
I have seen too many stupid things happen with politicians to hold out hope that anything will change.
I also don’t care if Nancy thinks I am wrong about drilling. When so much of the public actually agrees on something without using the +- 3% for speculation, then our elected officials need to just do what we tell them.

I have a friend who cannot visit his own daughter for a weekend custody visit because he can’t afford the price of gas. He has to choose between food and visiting with his daughter. His business is failing and he cannot even visit the only one left in his life he cares about.

According to you if American Oil companies drill and produce more oil, they will just sell it to China anyway and make even more money…
Firstly, wouldn’t you rather have AMERICAN companies with AMERICAN employees make money rather than companies that are nationalized in countries that want to destroy America?
It’s a global oil industry so demand cannot be localized to America. If America can add enough oil to the world market, it will lower the price of oil worldwide and weaken organizations such as OPEC and anti-American governments around the world.
Unless you are anti-American yourself, you should want American companies to flourish!!!

Can you impeach a Speaker of the House? I never met her, but she seems awfully un-American.

I think we all need to take a step back from our immediate emotions on this issue, and examine exactly what’s happening here. Major issues, like the current fuel prices – forcing Americans into a difficult pinch – will always be on deck in Congress, whether they’re on vacation or not. Please be careful when placing blame; remember that the article estimated “24 of the 199 House Republicans” participated in the talk-in, leading me to believe that Republicans are not blame-free. Only when all Republicans come back to the House in protest, can they fully blame Democrats and not label this as a hoax/showboating/gimmick. These “guerrilla” Republicans (bad word choice Mr. Norland) should use better time management in order to develop bulletproof arguments for discussion when the House is in session again, instead of preaching to the choir in the dark. And please don’t take credit for the “recent drop in the price of oil”. Win the war, Republicans, not just the battle.

You must be a real genius. See, actions in the marketplace effect the equilibrium cost. Meaning, the reason you are seeing a decrease in gas prices is simply because of the Republicans refusing to back down on domestic drilling. Not because the Democrats have done absolutely nothing. I’m sitting at the office because I can’t afford to use my vehicle as advertisment for my small pest control company. This, and high fuel prices have cut my new business by 40%.
High fuel costs are going to result in lower tax revenues from small businesses: IF they don’t put us OUT of business.

Domestic drilling would lower gas prices slightly almost immediately. It would lower them drastically in about 5 to 7 years. Now, that is a ‘long term solution’ because it brings ‘long term’ effects. Just because we will have cheaper gas prices does not mean we cannot invest in other fuel resources, I don’t have to pay $4 at the pump to invest in the environment.

It wont decrease the prices drastically because the world supply is diminishing and at that point, China and India will be consuming even more of the world’s oil. The only thing that will diminish it drastically is to not need it at all. The demand goes way down and these Mid East countries can sell it next to water. The price 7 years from now (and some people are saying we wont see that oil until 2030) will be way higher than it is right now.

In NEARLY EVERY OTHER INDUSTRY, this percentage would cause businesses to go bankrupt. THE ONLY reason why oil companies have not, is the sheer volume of oil/fuels sold. PERIOD. That’s it. As a Republican I wish more than 24 of the 199 House Republicans would had returned to congress (hope they still do). The US managed to build the atomic bomb, INCLUDING figuring out how to enrich both uranium and plutonium, in around five years. Drilling for oil is, to put it mildly, a heck of a lot easier.
If the government expedited the process – ie, get the EPA and the other bark-humpers out of the way – there’s no reason we couldn’t have oil in a few years or less.

All of the Republicans need to be back. Keep it going. We need to drill so people can have some affordable resources while other alternatives are developed.

The GOP is being Obstructionist for a reason. It’s a concerted effort to play the blame game. Even though the separate bills involving speculation and the release of SPR oil would likely have an immediate effect on oil prices and possibly burst the bubble, they see a political opportunity, paint the Democrats as the do nothing congress.

The question the 24 Republicans should be asking is where are the other 175 members of their party. Along with the questions maybe the Republican’s should explain to the American people why, when they had total control of both Houses of Congress and the Whitehouse the only energy Bill they managed to pass is one that helped lead to the situation that we’re in now, that along with the uncontrolled spending during their time in charge that led to that drastic devaluation of the dollar which is a big reason for the increased Oil Prices, or by their failure to regulate Investment and Hedge markets. They could also explain why an issue, Offshore Drilling, that won’t have any effect at all on either the price or the supply of Oil for 5 to 10 years, calls for Emergency Legislation and why Congress can’t take the time to work on a Bill that will benefit someone besides Big Oil, and why the Republicans oppose enforcing the Use It or Lose it Laws to force Big Oil to develop the millions of acres they have that have been leased for decades.

You all speak of facts well here they are. World annual demand for oil for 04,05,06 and 07 was 82.33, 83.65, 84.62 and 85.37 million barrels per day respectively. World supply for same said oil was 83.12, 84.63, 84.60 and 84.52 million barrels per day respectively. Supply has fallen behind production for the last couple of years. There is a simple solution to this a) increase the supply or b)decrease the demand.
Much like a family who is having a cash flow issue, they have two choices, increase their income or reduce their expenses. The fastest and most effective solution for that family would be to do both, therefore helping them to achieve financial success that much quicker. The same is true for our energy dependence issue.
Much is made of our strategic oil reserve which consists of approximately 700 million barrels of crude oil. Do the math and you will see that the entire reserve is only 10 days of global consumption. Why is that important? Because oil is a global commodity whose price is determined on a global supply/demand scale. Even if we were to dump the entire reserve it would have no effect on oil prices. The reserve is meant to protect the country from production interruptions such as Katrina and unfriendly regimes.
Since supply is so close to demand there is little to no wiggle room for the industry. The slightest interruption or even rumor of interruption sends the futures market soaring. Most of the oil we and other western democracies recieve is produced in countries with unstable, unfriendly non-democratic goverments that have little to no regard for enviromental concerns and have no one to answer to for failing to observe sensible enviromantal protections. Conversely, production within our own borders ensures the proper enviromental controls and accountability will be met.
A common sense look at the problem dictates that we need to remove our “addiction to oil”. The same common sense look dictates that we can not do that immediately. Common sense also dictates the correct solution is to do all of the above; increase supply to help diminish current costs while investing heavily in solutions that will decrease our demand. All these facts are available through DOE and other nonbiased sources.

Short term solution- Releasing some oil from the strategic petroleum reserve has decreased prices in the past but I like what Obama is proposing in relation to that, not just to relase it but replacing it with the thicker crude which takes longer to refine (if it’s in our reserve it wont matter so much and the time to refine it will take care of matters).
I think offering tax incentives to purchaase more fuel efficient/ hybrid cars (I believe Obama’s plan is a 7000 credit from what i read yesterday) and increasing fuel efficiency standards in general which is amazing to me that this has been voted down.
Obviously, also a better foreign policy. Part of the oil problem is the volatility of the market and how speculators have been taking advantage. The war in iraq definitely had an impact on that and every time iran is in the news, the market shifts.

You libs keep talking about big oil. Exxon on the world market is less than 10% of the world oil. The US is but a small cog in the big picture. So big oil does not have the power to set oil prices, they can only follow along.

Peter, I believe that spill happened when a transport vehicle that collided with a barge. It’s still an oil spill, it’s still an environmental disaster but it wasn’t because of drilling technology. The SPR has historically been used to help control oil prices. Bush 1 did it
in 91 to relieve pressure from the Gulf war, Clinton did it to lower heating oil costs. Regulation to control speculation on natural gas cut the price in half when it spiraled out of control. Both these measures were offered and had bi-partisan support but the GOP machine has chosen to obstruct and hold them hostage calling for OCS drilling. Robert Long CEO of Transocean the worlds largest builder of offshore drilling ships has stated there is a global shortage that will last past 2012.
Opening the OCS is a sham, it’s a political ploy. They don’t have enough rigs to drill in the currently leased offshore acreage, let alone additional OCS acreage.
GOPers are betting the farm they can pull this off and improve their November election chances which up to now look pretty grim, more losses on the way, possibly a filibuster proof Senate.
Wake up folks, it’s smoke and mirrors, political theater. We are paying for the ticket each time we buy a gallon of gas.

Don’t you people realize corporations DON’T pay taxes? Every single cost of a corp is passed onto the customer. Tax big oil all you want and they will just continue to increase the prices at the pump. That’s right, they can actually be sued by a stockholder if they do not consider stockholder’s best interests in making their decisions. How is a corp’s success measured you ask? Quite simply (pay attention Peter – class is in session) via their profit margin. Historically big oil earns about 10 cents on the dollar for every gallon of gas sold, or a 10% profit margin (lower than many industries) for all you government educated types. Get it Peter? Big oil will pass ALL taxes onto us until their profit margin is at the level that their stockholder’s demand and deserve. PERIOD.

Democrats under the leadership of Barack Obama want to treat the American people just like the Iraqi government treats its people. Iraq has been reported to be sitting on 50 to 80 billion in oil revenues. The money is just sitting in their banks. Iraq is pumping 2.5 million barrels a day. A 120 dollars a barrel that is $300 million dollars a day. The total population of Iraq is 20 million. If the government funneled that $300 million dollars a day in oil revenue directly to the Iraqi people then every person in Iraq would get a daily $15 check and a family of four could receive $60 a day without walking out the door. If each Iraqi family received that kind of money the war and insurgency would be over tomorrow. Al Queda and other foreign extremists in the country could not receive the checks because they would not be able to document that they are native Iraqi citizens.
Similarly, Democrats and Barack Obama want to treat American citizens the same way the Iraqi government is treating its people. There is 2.7 billion acres of offshore land that is currently unavailable for drilling due to the leadership of Democrats and Barack Obama. If this acreage were divided up, each adult American citizen would be entitled to twelve acres.
Under this proposal, every adult in the US would be entitled to 12.8 acres of mineral rights to offshore production. A lottery could be set up to randomly assign 12.8 acres to every American. You may end up with mineral rights to acreage south of Canada’s Hibernia offshore project 300 miles south of Newfoundland that is producing 50,000 barrels a day from only one well. The resulting lottery would create ten of thousands of instant American millionaires whose acreage abuts known contiguous offshore oil fields. A market to buy and sell acreage rights could be created which would put money into the pockets of those who acreage contains unknown oil potential. Turning over the acreage to ordinary Americans to collect leasing revenues and royalty rights will empower Americans and stimulate the economy. We do not need the Minerals Management Service of the Department of Interior and Nancy Pelosi to argue over the next four years which tracts of land should be leased and have that money end up going into the General Treasury. Its your money and you can get it now when you sell the rights to drill for oil and collect your royalties for the next twenty years.
Give the land to every American and they can expeditiously see to the leasing of the land. Mercedes Benz limousine liberals and wacko environmentalists can finally keep their mouths shut and instead use their own fat checkbooks to buy up acreage and prevent development if they choose with the acreage they buy from ordinary Americans. Let Barack Obama and the Democrats tell the American people that they are better trustees of the offshore land with limited or no development and that each American is not entitled and should not profit from their 12.8 acres of offshore land.
Leasing and royalty payments are not insignifcant even for small acreage. An example is east of Fort Worth Texas where natural gas drilling companies are paying 25 percent royalties and $3000 leasing payments to owners of quarter acre homes for natural gas drilling rights under their homes

Shadegg claimed that “gas prices have gone down” because of the “pressure” coming from pro-drilling conservatives:
“Gas prices have gone down, and they’ve gone down in part because the market is realizing that this kind of pressure from the Congress may actually cause a change in American policy,” said Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.), one of the ringleaders of the protest demanding that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) bring Congress back to vote on oil exploration measures.
But actual experts don’t believe the political stunts have anything to do with the drop in prices. In fact, oil and gas prices are down because of simple economics as the high energy prices and the weak economy are “curbing consumer demand” for gas:
Oil prices kept falling Tuesday, sinking as low as $118 a barrel on growing concerns that a U.S. economic slowdown and high energy costs are curbing consumer demand for gasoline and other petroleum products
One analyst told the Los Angeles Times that demand has “finally hit a wall” while another put it more bluntly to the AP: “$4-a-gallon gasoline has clearly killed demand.” As evidence of this decreased demand, the Transportation Department recently reported that Americans drove nearly 10 billion fewer miles in May 2008 than May 2007.
Conservatives have previously tried to give credit for lower prices to President Bush’s call for offshore drilling, but even the White House rejected that logic. Though they’re crediting their theatrics for the drop in prices, The Hill reports that the conservatives refused to “answer questions about whether they would take the blame if gas prices go up again.”

On the other hand. If the prices will be high in 10 years with our drilling on the OCS ….how high will they be if we do not??? The dollar is collapsing as traders use oil as a currency hedge. ( they used to use gold )….. This drilling WILL occur. It is only a matter of pain threshold now. Will it be 4, 5 or 6 dollars per gallon. In 5-10 years new domestic drilling would affect prices, optimistically, by about 1%; adding about 200,000 barrels per day to our production. Today, right now, we could cut domestic consumption by 5% or more simply by driving a tad slower and keeping our cars tuned and well inflated. If you mock it, you mock common sense.
Listen to the old GOP’er T. Boone Pickens, the oil man, who as flatly said what is well known: we can’t drill our way out of this mess. Republican drilling moves are about politics, not about actually helping Americans.

I’m not sure where you live, but here in SC, public transportation is almost non existant. I live 30 miles from my job with a small company. Some questions:
how come the price per barrel started declining the moment Bush announced he was lifting the ban?
How come “if we can’t drill our way out of this problem” that releasing supply from our reserves is an answer?
Are there any alternative sources we can use NOW? or are they 10 yrs into the future ? If they are, what are we to do in the meantime?
It seems to me, while we search for a good alternative to oil, we need to drill for it where we already know it is to bridge the gap.
Yes we have leases…but if the land is unexplored as yet it will take longer than drilling offshore where we already know oil is and we can get to it faster. Estimates are about 3 yrs.
Opening up new fields will stop upward speculation in the commodities market. The more oil there will be in the future the lower the price. And we will be less subject to price fluctuations if something flares up in the mid east or a hurricane hits somewhere.
The solution to this crisis has to be multifaceted and it has to include oil. Come on people, this is not a democratic issue or a republican issue…it’s just common sense.

With the crisis we are in, Congress should be in session. It is negligent and offensive that they adjourned for five weeks with gas and food prices so high. Actually, what I mean to say is, it creates a bad image for the Democratic leadership, which it cannot afford to do right now.
I am just wondering, since prices have been high for so long, why Democrats adjourning now impacts the current attempt to lower costs; I mean, it seems that before they adjourned, the prices have been steadily building, and there has been no change. Do these rogue Republicans really think that holding session during the pre-set Congressional vacation will solve what couldn’t be solved with an entire Congress in session?
It also seems that many people are forgetting that the Republican administration of Bush/Cheney got us into the war that has inflated the oil prices as well as the food prices.
Hmmm, I think the Dems could prove better face by playing the game and sending a few Dems to match the number of Reps holding this guerilla session. Then, the Reps would have no ammo to do what they always do, spin the story so it appears they are doing all they can, while the “spineless” Democrats do nothing. It’s just not true. It takes no spine to orate to a bunch of tourists, does it? Seems more like a hoot, and less about work.
Certain things might have been unspoken, certain ideas, when the full Congress was in session. Otherwise, despite the fact that it looks bad for the Democrats, there is nothing immediate that can be done about gas prices and food prices, and that’s just being pragmatic. If there was some change that was going to happen, I imagine it would have at least started when the entire Congress was in session. Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like a classic excuse, because what are they going to do, tell the American public, if the Democrats were here, we would lower gas and food prices, just like that…
I doubt it. I doubt it because they can’t do that, it’s not the way it works, and if it did, they could have done it any of the previous times they discussed these issues prior to the vacation. They could have lowered gas prices and food prices last week and everyone could have gone on vacation.
I’m no specialist, but I’ve seen the blame game played out hundreds of times…that’s all it is, a game and nothing more. The fact of the matter is, it’s not the Dems who have caused high gas prices, high food prices, and weakened economy, etc. It was the Bush/Cheney administration…we can’t take our eyes off of that because that is where there is blame, and we all know it. It’s not the vacationing congresses fault that all of the things are happening. I believe that if they could really change the course with these prices by staying in session, they would. MS- along around October people will be trying to figure out how they will pay for oil this winter. Then in November they will vote and it will not be for the Democrats who have stalled any increase in domestic production. I predict a November surprise.

How is it when we import 70% OF OUR OIL that congress does not understand that this is a security issue?

Oil is a commodity traded on the Global Market the price is determined by Global factors NOT THE US CONGRESS! Take a look at how well China, India, and many other developing have been doing and then see if they have anything to do with high gas prices in the rest of the world. GOP mouth pieces are touting their knowledge of Supply and Demand economics saying that if we increase the Supply the price will go down. Well that would be all well and good if the world population wasn’t growing, but even if we drill on every avaiable acer of wild life we still won;t be able to catch up to the ever growing demand of an expanding population. But if we have a new source of energy then we might lower the DEMAND for oil which would increase the SUPLLY and lower the price.
Also no matter how much you fight this point OIl will run out, sure not this year or even in this decade but it will run out. Then what, were are the ideas from the GOP about what to do when this non-renewable resource runs out. it will and all we are doing by denying this is ensuring our grandchildren’s demise.
Liberals conservatives Dems and Repubs need to accept that there is nothing the US government can do about gas prices, because the US government does not control the Majority of the worlds Oil. Now if we became the leaders in alternative energy then maybe we would be exporting new energy technology, like the middle east exports oil.
And really what good is 24 republicans yelling in a dark room going to do, sure I agree that none of them have the right to go on vacation, but if you have all of this energy to get something done, go out and do it. Do we really need to raise awareness of the energy crisis, I think the country is all to painfully aware of what is going on. Some of you, mostly Democrats, continue to DEMONIZE “Big Oil.” because of your MAJOR lack of knowledge regarding economics. Who do you think owns big oil? Where do you think those “HUGE,” “EXCESSIVE” profits go? Do you really think 7-8% is an excessive return on investment? Do you really think all of those oil leases the “Big OIL” has is certified “Drill here for all the oil you could ever need.”?
Lesson 1: An oil lease enables a company to SEARCH for oil on a specific property. The lease does not provide that there is any certainty that there is oil there. This often entails a major expenditure of money for seismographic testing and/or drilling test holes. The result is often what is known as a “dry hole” (no oil) or a strike that hits oil that is too expensive to recover.
Lesson 2: There are levels of permitting for any mineral or oil extraction. Some of these permits require extensive, expensive, review by various governing bodies. ASSUMING the permitting process runs along without a hitch, there are often legal suits filed by Eco-Nuts claiming the mass extinction of the Greater SoCal Turd Eating Wacko (or some such) is an inevitable result of any further activity on the lease. Some judges, with an amazing lack of good sense, allow that crap to drag on for a while. Of course, this causes a great expenditure for lawyers and clogs he courts for a while. After this nonsense, things might proceed to a successful conclusion and a new source of oil is available.
Lesson 3: Once oil is available, it must be transported to a refinery. Oops! There seems to be more oil about than a capacity to refine it. This was a result of more government intervention, spurred on by the Eco-Nuts. As a result, it’s often necessary to sell the oil to someone with a refinery and use that money to buy already refined oil products from someone else. Each step of this process eats away at the profitability of the venture.
Lesson 4: Once the product is finally ready to use it must be stored before it can be distributed. Aha! Another chance for more government intervention, spurred on by the Eco-Nuts. Eventually, it is distributed. Each step in the distribution process adds a little bit to the price of the product.
Lesson 5: The oil product, whether it is motor oil, kerosene, gasoline, lubricants, beauty products, medicines, fertilizers, plastics or polyester cloth, are advertised to attract buyers. Sometimes the advertising is for a specific brand. Sometimes the advertising is for a generic product. The advertising adds a little to the price of a product.
I’m going to have to skip over a few lessons before this turns into a major economic treatise. So….Let’s just end with….
Lesson 9: The quantity of oil available to any market is, at present, controlled by nations other than the U.S.A. We, because of government intervention, spurred on by the Eco-Nuts, produce little. Remember OPEC? OPEC, in essence, controls the price by raising or lowering their production in response to demand. OPEC can and does restrict output with increased demand in order to get the price bid up so they make more money. OPEC can and does lower the price for their “friends.” Quite a few of the OPEC countries are dictatorships and/or are not that friendly to the U.S.A. If they were of a mind to, they could totally shut us out of the bidding for any of their oil. You think gas prices are high now? If we sold our oil on the world market, we would have to charge the same prices or all of our oil would go somewhere else.
Lesson 10 (A real biggie): No matter what the world price of oil is, we are paying a lot more than we should for gas at the pump. At EACH step in the production and distribution of oil products, there is a little bit added to the price by local, and/or state and/or Federal government taxation. There is also some added by the profit required by all that handle it along the way, including point of sale. The BIGGEST (un-earned) chunk of the pie is that extracted, at the pump, by the Federal Government.
Lesson 11 (Another biggie): Remember the question “Who owns big oil?”? Well, I’ve the answer! It’s the people! Big oil companies are owned by people like you and me. We bought a share or shares in the companies. Of course, some of the shares were bought by those “evil” investors. Some of those “evil” investors are teacher’s pension plans, union pension plans, city and state employees pension plans, 401(K)s, IRAs and other retirement plans. We’ve appointed professional managers to run the companies for us and we pay them well if they do well at their job. They own a piece of the companies too, so if the company loses, they do too. At the end of this money trail those “excessive” profits return to the shareholders. Even then, the Federal government steals another hefty hunk by way of the IRS.
Lessons over! If you hear ANYONE ranting about “excessive profits” or “nationalization” or taxing “Windfall Profits” beware. There is a liar and control freak or total moron who wants to be a thief.

I know better, I worked for a polymer company so I know what else crude oil is used for, and I also know renewable energy can be used for many other things, but my car can’t get around with a turbin stuck to the top or even those solar panels.
I still have to have gasoline. I have family living in Californa real close to those turbines, and that’s fine with them and me, but until I can get a hybrid car that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg I have to stick with what I have. Social Security isn’t all that extravagant that I could aford a new car just now. My medical bills are not going down either.

Boy I a can hardly wait until the middle of November when temperatures fall below freezing at night. I can hardly wait to see what the Congress is going to do or say when Americans start freezing to death at night because they can’t get fuel oil to heat their homes. I can hardly wait until Richmond, Va, Washington D.C., Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, New York City, NY, Providence R.I., Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, and many other cities turn into war zones over the steeling of fuel to heat homes with. Now I will tell you while you all live in your own little world. This is going to cost billions upon billions to subsidize because what you have not done to avoid this. You all sit up in your little palaces. You are all out of touch. You don’t care, until if effects you, and that day is less then 100 days away, rather you win the election or not. Now I was a service tech for Sears not so many years ago, and I will tell you that you have a lot bigger problem then you can imagine. Maybe you all need to have been a service tech for a company like Sears so you could see the real world and how many fuel oil furnaces that exist, and how many people can afford to replace them. Well I just want to see what happens when it cost up to 1600 dollars a month to heat a home and the fuel oil companies cut off credit accounts to those because they cannot afford to pay or will not pay for it. I hope you all get a good nights sleep when you all see what you have caused and done. Of course you will continue not to care. I hope what I wrote makes you feel good. It sure bothered me to write it.

I think it is time for us to admit that the U.S. oil companies have passed the test. With the profits they are posting they have shown us that they know how to get oil out of the ground and bring it to the market for us to buy. We know that the OPEC countries are the ones that hold oil off the market in order to raise the price. So I think we should get out of the way a let them, the oil companies, do what they can do best and let them get oil wherever it is. Why should we allow fools in Congress who have never drilled or run a oil company dictated where and when to drill. In fact, I would bet that if left to themselves that the oil companies would not drill as much as they should in order to keep prices up. We should be demanding that they drill everywhere and use the royalties from the leases to invest in an alternative fuel to power our cars. Once we have a new fuel source for transportation to compete against oil we will break the monopoly and we can break the back of OPEC. If we do not come up with another fuel source for transportation we will be a slave to OPEC and will keep transferring $1 trillion to countries that are trying to defeat us. Why should we leave our oil asset in the ground while we develop a new fuel source. Why keep transferring our wealth out of this country. Wind and solar will not power our cars for years to come, and once we develop plug in electric cars it will take 10-15 years to change our fleet over. Let’s quit having people in Washington who do not know how to run business, make business decisions. Let the market work knowing that the key to the problem is some new fuel source in the market to compete with the oil monopoly

As has been stated allready, just the suggestion that the US will drill for oil will have an impact on the markets. Show a plan to develop 500 nuke plants and watch the price fall. Add Oil Shale recovery to the mix and we might offset anything the Iranians have to say about shutting down supply lines in the SoH.
The world wants energy and we can provide it,in the US, cleaner and safer than anyone else. The world and the markets will notice if we show we are serious about energy self reliance.
If Iran gets a nuclear weapon in 5 years we just might wish we had started down the path of energy self reliance one heck of alot earlier. Its not just about drilling but its a good first step to start getting over the notion that we cant save the planet. We need to save this country first. We should get around to saving the rest of the world once we have our own house in order.

It is a well known fact amongst economists that starting the process of drilling NOW will affect the price immediately, even though not one drop will be ready for a few years. Investing is all about future payoff, so when the market anticipates a future supply boost the price goes down! Amazing! Capitalism in action! Maybe that’s why Pelosi and Obama are afraid to have a vote- they don’t want capitalism to succeed.

As for everyone’s thoughts on alternative energy, and reliance on oil…hey, guess what…we rely on oil, and fossil fuels at the moment. Until we get the new technology prepared for us to wean our country off of these fuels we need oil. Also, we need to actually get these new technologies going, without the EPA, and the government pushing against them. (Sorry, but there have been too many Nuclear power plants in the United States shut down due to “environmental concerns. Some of these plants have had holes drilled into the reactors, making them completely useless in the future.)
Now then, my last point.
All of you on here calling for the immediate, and complete removal of the oil economy we currently have, I have a question.
WHY ARE YOU ON THE INTERNET?
If you are truly against big oil, and fossil fuels, why are you using the electricity to power your computer, the phone/cable line to connect to the internet (The line itself has a slight electrical current running through it. Also, your ISP(Cable/DSL/Modem) and/or phone company(DSL/Modem) both use more energy than any single house which the republicans calling for drilling could possibly use.)
If you’re truly against oil being such a strong and major factor within our economy, please, by all means…have the power shut down from your house, cease using cable/phone (don’t forget their work trucks using gas), sell your car (a scrap yard might just crush it for you, so no one can drive it), and anything else that you may do which could possibly consume oil. That, I’m sure would be much more beneficial for the price of gas at the pump, the environment, and the future of alternative energy (If you’re not using oil, they’ll find some other way of getting your money right?).
But yeah, feel free…also, side note, stay away from plastics since they’re made from oil as well…which would be another reason to get rid of your computer, tv, etc (all the plastic in modern electronics.)

Rick_VT – The President is never really on vacation. Today – with video conferencing and other electronic means of communication, the President doesn’t NEED to be in Washington to be working. So what, if he goes to the ranch for a change of scenery -he’s still working and has the means to be in constant and immediate communication with whomever he needs to.

If we open all offshore drilling today, ten years from now we will look back and see that very little drilling had been done, and that the oil that was drilled was sold to China and the Asian market. And prices at the pump will still be high if not higher than today.
