Texas GOP Hits Obama for Ignoring Impoverished Half-Brother

In a web video, the Republican Party of Texas hits back Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., on the "housing" issue in a web video that attacks the Democrat because his half-brother George lives in a shack outside Nairobi, Kenya.

"Barack Obama has viciously attacked John McCain and his family for being successful and living the American dream," says the ad’s narrator.

"This even after McCain has given so much for his country…" (images of McCain as a prisoner of war)

"…Obama claims he’s looking after our families in an economic downturn…" (images of Obama in Hawaii body surfing, playing golf)

"…but ask yourself this: If Obama cares so much about your family why doesn’t he doesn’t take care of his own family first. Barack Obama lives in this house…" (image of Obama’s house)

"…wants to live in this one…" (image of White House)

"…while his own brother lives in this one." (image of Obama’s half brother George.)

I believe Obama has met his half-brother — one of eight half-siblings Obama has scattered throughout the globe — once.

Isn’t this kind of a weird attack for the Texas GOP to launch given the recent revelation of Cindy McCain’s "angry" and estranged half-sister?

I don’t know if this ad is fair, but I have looked hard into Obama’s adult life to see if Obama ever seriously attempted to make the lives of his constituents better as a result of his employement or his public office. Helping others does not appear to be a driver for Barack Obama – just self advancement. I know he was a community organizer, but the impact of that work seems so insiginifcant. He certainly did not pursue it as a career. A detachment from his brothers life doesn’t surprise me.

Blah Blah bLAH … Cindy is NOT running to be the President of the United States.
And Cindy’s half sister is not living in ABSOULTE poverty in a hut in Africa.

Ouch this one is gonna hurt. If Cindy’s half sister isnt living in an impoverished country in shack it doesn’t matter. Its kind of low but the truth if Obama knows this is his brother why doesnt he help him unless he has been.

Is Obama responsible for half-siblings he doesn’t even know?
The only sibling that Obama really knows his his half-sister in which he was raised with.

I am sorry to learn that Mark Halperin has apparently spent several weeks in a hyperbaric chamber. He suggested on “This Week” that Obama has “opened the door” to attacks by playing up McCain’s failure to know how many houses he has, that the attacks “started with the Obama campaign.” I’m sorry that he missed the repeated attacks on Obama’s patriotism, the absurd linking to Britney Spears (who said we should just trust the president in everything) and Paris Hilton (whose parents contributed $4700 to McCain), and the suggestion that Obama would lose the war to win the election. Mr. Halperin should already know that public opinion favors change and Obama’s positions on the economy and the wars, so the only way McCain can win is by tearing down Obama. He and his party started long ago and they won’t stop until the election is over, regardless of whether Obama exploits McCain’s mistakes.
By the way, at least Obama is attacking something real rather than imagined associations with notorious party girls and the absurd notion–from McCain’s own mouth–that a senator from Illinois could somehow be responsible for “losing” Iraq.

Obama is only about ONE THING … OBAMA!!!
PERSONAL SELFISH AMBITION … SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT WITHOUT HAVING DONE ANY GROUND WORK TO PREPARE TO BE THE PRESIDENT …
Obama is not wanting change for America or you and me ..
Obama’s message of change is a JOKE … Obama will say ANYTHING to get elected.
Everything he says is TUNED to make you FEEL good …
And now his VP is someone who has been in Washington for over 30 years …
SO MUCH for his talk about change…
So much for those who think Experience does not matter and voted Obama as their nominee ..
Now your political fraud nominee is telling you that EXPERIENCE DOES MATTER.
And Obama is an EMPTY HEAD filled only with the food that the anti-America, Anti-White Rev. WRIGHT has fed him for the past 20 years …
WAKE UP AMERICA AND PUT ON YOUR THINKING HAT …
I would sooner have President BIDEN than Obama ..
SAVE AMERICA – VOTE MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

The distinction that could be made is “living in poverty” vs. “not living in poverty”.
Alternatively … state GOP branches do weird stuff. Earlier in the campaign, McCain actively tried to rein them in over a few ads.
Now, he’s not so eager to.
***
McCain doesn’t have to make those sorts of attacks himself — he just has to stop actively trying to prevent them.

Let’s get to work, Hillarys 28% supporters …
Let us all vote MCCAIN .. you have to vote for MCCAIN. If you dont vote for MCCAIN, you end up voting OBAMA whether you actually cast the vote or not.
Let us put COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY …
NO OBAMA is IMPORTANT TO AMERICA.

Speaking of the Texas GOP, I can’t wait to hear Ron Paul address the republican convention. Since they now want to show how much they care about Clinton, maybe they’ll show him in a prime time spot to show how party reconciliation is done. Oh, thats right, the Democratic Party has both Clinton and her spouse in prime time. Maybe they’ll put Paul on the ticket as their VP. Yeah, that’ll do it.

if attacking mccain for leaving his first wife is fair game, so is obamas half flesh and blood brother’s destitute status and obamas negligence to lift a finger to help him. if the excuse is he didn’t know, well he knows now, so do something to help your brother obama.
so cindy has a bitter, angry, half sister, so do i, so do many of us.

I gather the slick ad was paid significantly by Big Oil in Texas, which would fare a lot better with McCain as president. I seriously doubt the McCain camp would want any tit for tat with family values. They may be perpetuating some major self-injury with all the attacks. Not that the Democrats will respond with an equal reaction, but that the targeted audience, instead of being passive recipients, will question the ethics of those behind the attacks. Maybe the McCain surrogates ultimate folly will be in underestimating the intelligence of the American voter.

Posted by: kat | August 25, 2008, 12:45 am 12:45 am

Jake this is absolutey a fair target as it reflects a lot about Barack Obama.
Yes, he isn’t close to his half brother, but put yourself in that position. If you found a half brother living in poverty, and you knew that giving him $5/month would greatly improve his life, would you do it?? Of course you would. That’s just one latte/month.
And, more telling, is that Cindy McCain has done more for the impoverished and disadvantaged around the world than both the Obamas put together.

Fascinating that the texas GOP hits Obama for his brother. The Texas GOP thinks they are playing to their base, but many of us aren’t voting the party line this year and Texas may be in for a bit of a surprise.

Why not simply address the accusation at hand rather than personal attacks.
Barack Obama has a half brother who lives in poverty.
Barack Obama does not know him well or hardly at all, but he is FAMILY.
Giving his brother just $5/month would greatly improve his life.
Where is the compassion? Where is the supposed “candidate for the poor”? Sure, he’s willing to give OTHER people’s money to the poor but not his own – even if it’s family.
Sorry, but this ad is very effective and will undermine the Obama message of being for the poor.

I would say that Obama has some explaining to do, its easy to say he doesnt know his brother well, but that’s just an easy explanation, but no helping his brother along with only giving 1% of income to charity goes to show that his willingness to help out people only goes so far.

According to the Telegraph, Barack Obama only met George twice:—He has only met his famous older brother twice – once when he was just five and the last time in 2006 when Senator Obama was on a tour of East Africa and visited Nairobi.
The Illinois senator mentions his brother in his autobiography, describing him in just one passing paragraph as a “beautiful boy with a rounded head”.
Of their second meeting, George Obama said: “It was very brief, we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger.”—

JA- Cindy McCain has a half sister living in Phoenix, not thousands of miles away on a different continent, and she has steadfastly maintained that she’s an only child. This sister is apparently struggling some and was effectively cut off from the Hensley fortune when their father died in 2000. Yes, his brother should be getting some assistance, but this may very well reflect his distance and obscurity as 1 of 8 half-siblings than the assumption of Obama not wanting to help. The GOP is intent on rattling any skeletons they possible can, as if none exist for their candidate and exposure of the opponent is more important than defining the McCain platforms.

Kat,
Is Cindy McCain running for president? I wasn’t aware she was. But while you’re on the subject of her, obviously the family had a falling out but she is NOT LIVING IN POVERTY AS OBAMA’S BROTHER IS. Plus, Cindy McCain has done more for the poor of the world than both the Obamas put together.
Time to pull your head out of the sand and see things for what they are.

If you think it is about the regime in China, then I can understand why you think Mccain is well versed in foreign policy. The problem is we hardly travel out so in the midst of blind men, a one-eyed person will definitely be the king. The Chinese are even far better than they were before. China has always be a Communist State with a lot hate for Americans but they have never dared deporting Americans like this but we have cheapened ourselves owing them billions of dollars that we can no longer have any say on any matter with them.

Obama dropped the ball here. Honestly, how could he sleep at night knowing the conditions his half brother lives in??? I have more empathy for his brother than he does.

We have had the same policies for the past eight years, it is not working and there is no way it is going to work. Infact Mccain with all his lobbyist and his tempers, his vocabulary will only be three words. Mcpain, Mchunger and Mcsurge.

Eyes like Summer Sun,
I love people like you. You read a few articles, perhaps scholarly, about China and think now you’re a professional historian or political scientist.
The Chinese government is nothing short of opportunistically fascist – i.e., fasicst when they see it serves a purpose, “better” when they don’t see the purpose. And suckers like you think because they give a concession here or there they are improving.

Posted by: JA | August 25, 2008, 1:26 am 1:26 am

JA- Of course, Cindy McCain isn’t running for president. And neither is Obama’s half-brother. I may have my head in the sand on some matters, but not when it comes to seeing the McCain camp is creating distractions with attacks rather than explaining their candidate’s positions.

Posted by: kat | August 25, 2008, 1:34 am 1:34 am

JA, you dont have to talk and act stupid. just hit google and hit China and read about them. Do you know how the world views Americans? No one dared deport any American without any tangible reason but for China that was a third-world country as far back as 4-6 years ago to start deporting Americans, its a total SHAME.

In the last few weeks, people from Texas with too much money and time have paid off lovers and hidden Democratic candidates babies; they have bundled loads of money to pour into the Republican coffers and now this. May-be, Obama’s brother likes his village. It is not our place to judge a situation both from a country or an individual who is not part of this process.

Posted by: Quit it Texas | August 25, 2008, 1:37 am 1:37 am

the key element here is not just that Obama hasn’thelpedwith his brother, but WHY. Obama is a Faustian political opportunist, who will sacrifice anything and anyone to get what he wants. Look at how many people he has thrown under the bus. Obama’s brother is an impediment: obama does not want people to know his close association with Africa. So, what does he do, he sacrifices family. It’s deplorable.
Will Obama sacrifice you? He doesn’t even know you, why do you think he would care about you, if you stand in the way of what he wants?
Americans will learn the truth.

Posted by: decentAmerican | August 25, 2008, 1:41 am 1:41 am

Eyes like the Summer Sun, I certainly hope your savings for the next four years can be put to a different use than emergency funds. The worst case scenario is McCain as president in a democratically controlled senate and house, which would create a balance of sorts. I guess it’s a matter of being prepared for the worst but hoping for the best.

according to an npr interview with cindy’s sister her and her husband are not destitute, husband firefighter, and she is/was a first responder. they live in central phx which is a rather exclusive area. reading the interview i did not detect any anger or hostility just upset that cindy claims to be an only child. of coarse the sister felt entitled to the fathers estate. but none of this had much to do with cindy. so as much as some of you were salivating for some dirt on cindy it does not seem this story will give you the benefit of trashing her.

I’m no Obama supporter FOR SURE, but I don’t know what obligation he has to 8 half siblings in kenya from his dad’s 3 other wives. His dad was only around for 2 years, so these siblilngs are distant for sure….but it highlights his non traditional parents. Mom was three months pregnant with Nobama when she married his father. Interesting he only allows his half sister (from mom and Indonesian hubby #2) to talk to the cameras.
I do feel for BO’s screwed up family and childhood…but why haven’t we heard from granny? McCain’s mom is 96 and rocks….sharp as a tac and beautiful too. Let granny explain so much that we still don’t know.

There are millions of young people like me all around the U.S. and we are tired of stupid attacks like these.
Not once have I heard McCain talk about what he’s going to do; it’s all about Obama and what he’s doing. Who his brother is. Who his preacher is.
My whole family is diehard Republican and we are voting for Obama. He is the only one talking about making things different. John McCain is talking about stuff that doesn’t matter like Obama’s half brother when Obama didn’t even know his own father.
Judging from the attitudes of my Texan Republican friends, Obama is going to win and he’s going to win big.

Let’s start a movement to get Obama’s brother here and a Dr Phil meeting for Cindy and her half sister.
Or let’s pretend that it is none of our business.
Then let’s pretend we don;t have any skeltons in our closet.
Some of these people have ay to much time on their hands.
Here’s a thought all the big buck pent on both of these conventions is appalling. Imagine what that money could do to help the poor, the vets, the sick and the children who need to be adopted.
But no we need hoopla, while the economy goes down the tubes we have glitz and glamour….is that Nero I channeled just now….no it was a trillion zeroes.

This is just another example of why Saddleback was such a disaster for Senator Obama. He puts down America and Americans, citing Matthew’s edict to give to the least among you, implying that we don’t give enough, regardless of the fact that we charitably give twice as much as the British, seven times as much as Germans, and 16 times as much as Italians. And, all the while he doesn’t give a thing to his own brother who is living on one dollar a month. Also, the Obama’s income tax returns reveal that Obama could stand to listen a bit to his own lecture, as they are incredibly meagre charitable givers themselves.

My mom and dad adopted my brother when I was six and yes, he is my brother. Several years ago it was revealed that my dad had another son that none of us knew about. I’ve met him, and he even lives in a city next to us, but it was only once and it was brief. In short, this biological ‘brother’ is no brother at all and I have no responsibility towards him. My real brother, however, the adopted one, I would help in a heartbeat. These GOP ads are ridiculous and the people who go ‘ohhhh’ this is bad are disconnected from reality and are merely projecting their own wishes in drumming up its significance.
I also have friends and know the anyone who sucks up with ‘my friends’ all the time is trying to use me. McCain is not the peoples friend. His friends are all multimillionaires and the lobbyists who work for them. Chances are if you’re reading this that you are not one of them, and not McCain’s friend.
Oh, and I’m certainly not a Georgian, no matter what the old man says, and nor are you. If it’s not okay for Obama to say that he is a citizen of the world it’s not okay for McCain to say that we all are.
As to McClaims attempt to join Obama with Ayers, Rezko,or event the impending Wright ads; a person is not guilty by association alone. I, for example, befriended a guy – a fellow American – while living in Korea. Because I later found out that he was a pedophile doesn’t mean that I am. And Wright? I’ve had lots of teachers that I respected, learned a lot from, but ultimately disagreed with.
In the end, it appears that McCain suffers from a serious disconnect between fact and fantasy. My step-brother too suffers cognitive disconnects following a car accident, and while I love him, he is not allowed to vote because of it, and neither should the people who buy into McCain’s nonsense.

you’re right that Obama has no obligation to his half brother. But one would think that someone who portrays himself as so concerned for the plight of the poor would send his brother a couple bucks a month.
This is hypocrisy at its worst.

Heck, even I feel bad for his brother.
Did you read the article about where Obama’s half brother was saying how much he supports him for president, despite the fact that he hardly knows him. Now THAT’S what family does.
Meanwhile, Obama just turned his back on him.
Does anyone know where I can send Obama’s half brother some money? I am absoutely serious. $50 is nothing to me, to this poor guy it’s 4 years of income.

Obama could double his brother’s income by sending him $1 a month.
He isn’t willing to do that.
But he wants you and me to send billions to nations like Africa – in fact, a full 7% of our GDP – via the Global Poverty Act.
Obama is mighty free-wheelin’ with our money. With his own? Not so much.

Posted by: marylou | August 25, 2008, 4:56 am 4:56 am

it is time we progressives stop stewing about the nomination. i wanted edwards, but look what happened (well now i’m kinda glad because would have lost for sure). anyways we should not let ourselves buy into and become pawns of right wing bloggers who are trying their best to stoke a fire with the only goal of keeping a republican in office. if we dont get that point we need to get it!!

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 4:58 am 4:58 am

toddo…McCain has the greatest record of working across the isle….and no one disputes that. His own party was angry with him that he was too liberal and he clashed with Bush several times.

Posted by: Debra | August 25, 2008, 4:58 am 4:58 am

toddo, a cold day in hell indeed when i vote for mc can’t. so what the hell…i am not hiding behind my gender as you earlier spoke. i am here speaking for the poor, the uninsured, the poverished, the underpaid, the person ready to lose their home, the family who has no food on the table, the person whose car is repossed, the women who are so frickin underpaid for the same work they do as a man you frickin idiot!!!! don’t you slam my heritage or my party again…..i am the dem of dems you moron..

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 4:59 am 4:59 am

i dont believe you! a true dem knows what is at stake with this election. a true dem knows that issues of women, the poor, the jobless, the middle clase wont see the light of day in a republican administration or has the last 8 yrs not taught you that.

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:04 am 5:04 am

i repeat:
yes you did when you type crap like “osama hussein bin laden biden” that is straight out of the karl rove playbook and you know it!!. if you are concerned about womens issues and policy, what makes you thing mccain will have people who speaks for them at his table. they are not big oil they are not former bush cabinet members. what do you think he would envite hillary to the table to champion progressive causes. it would be a cold day in hell and if you think otherwise you better wake up!!

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:05 am 5:05 am

toddo, i am a clinton girl…the last 8 years has shown me debt, cowardess, poor, no insurance, dont’ you dare say i am not a dem…where do you wanna meet if you think that….go hillary, go dems, go war vets, go poor, go homeless, go middle class

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:06 am 5:06 am

and again tuddo, i never voted for bush. so there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:08 am 5:08 am

debra what you said would be true 5 yrs ago when people like me adored mccain, but he has changed. he now proudly states he has supported bush 95% of the time. i dont want another president bush even at 95%. so if mccain was the way he was around 2000, he would have had my vote, but he is not. he has changed and so has my vote!

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:09 am 5:09 am

tuddo, you better do some research. biden supported bush more than mc cain did. so here we go with old politics.
what state do you live in BTW

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:11 am 5:11 am

so if you are a true dem you would not dare attach bidens and obama’s name to osama bin laden. that speaks volumes more than what you are now saying!!

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:11 am 5:11 am

so biden has supported bush 95.1% where some other percentage. where are you getting your facts. my came from the straight talk express himself!! i want change and someone who will fight for progressive causes. you wont get that with mccain. the conservatives wouldnt let him

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:15 am 5:15 am

toddo – McCain is still the Maverick, but has to appeal to the base….when he gets in office he’ll still be the straight talk express…if BO gets in it will only be talk…ug, um, ah, ugh….VOTE McCAIN.

Posted by: Debra | August 25, 2008, 5:18 am 5:18 am

and if hillary comes out fighting at the convention but for obama, what has she lost her way. NO, Hillary like all other true Democrats know what is at stake. Hillary is a tuff strong dynamic wonderful person, but she lost the nomination. was she made, yes. was she pissed, yes. is she still, likely. but Hillary knows this election is not about her or obama its about changing the course of our country and preventing mccain from continuing 95% of bush policy. hillary knows this and so do we.

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:22 am 5:22 am

either or you girls know about the law suit involving Obama’s birth certificate or dual citizenship? alot of talk/blogs/website devoted to this suit by a Dem congressman from Penn.

Posted by: Debra | August 25, 2008, 5:22 am 5:22 am

Thats a very low attack. SO much for McCain leading a high minded debate on the issues. If he had any conscience, if he had any sense of honesty he should publicly stand up and tell anyone campaigning for him to stop the personal attacks.

Posted by: markymark | August 25, 2008, 5:22 am 5:22 am

debra a true maverick would not change a damn thing to win approval. a true maverick would make others see his way. mccain has not done that since 2000 when he started changing.
so yes mccain was maverick but no more.

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:24 am 5:24 am

ok tuddo, i love hillary and i do know and respect the fact that she lost in the primes. but i just can’t bring myself to vote for oblama and biden the bulldog, take that to chavez, because i think hillary has so much more class and experience.

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:25 am 5:25 am

toddo…John does not want to raise your taxes in a soft economy and Obama will…Dems always raise taxes and you and I can’t afford that. I love Hillary and voted for her as she was best for the job, even knowing my taxes would be raised and uni health care is never going to happen…but on so many other issues Hill had it right.
Now I’m for McCain out of protest over the sock puppet.

Posted by: Debra | August 25, 2008, 5:25 am 5:25 am

debra, i hear what you are saying….oblama will raise taxes….that is the way it will be. what irks me is the way he got the nom…..hillary was screwed by the dnc and that idiot howard the tiraid dean. i can’t stand it. just wait until denver. i was there in may….and all they could talk about was hillary.

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:29 am 5:29 am

and you crap heads spewing out crazy stuff on mccain, go away!! we dont need tabloit fodder to win an election. leave that type of crap for the republicans to spew out. thats what their best at because they know they will lose on the issues.

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:34 am 5:34 am

tuddo, i think now you are making sense. i love hill, and wish she would have won. as i have said earlier, i am a true dem, the voice of the middle class, trying to keep a roof over my head, work in a factory, have a 04 car, eat a lot of sandwiches for dinner, sometimes walk to work, love animals, give to charity more than others, will take all the overtime that is offered to me because i need it….support unions, look out for the homeless, and most of all….if i won the powerball, i would build an animal shelter here where i live to keep the homeless animals warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, with plenty of food, warmth and love.

Posted by: carlasue | August 25, 2008, 5:36 am 5:36 am

debra even though i dont like your politics, i’ve got your back on this one. anyone who puts down mccain’s service should be ashamed. i wont vote for him, but he is a true hero and admiriable american. i just cant support his policies.

“McCain is respected for his service”??? He aided and abetted the enemy while he was captured. A couple of his buddies paid a high price for his information. Yet he doesn’t have the guts to admit it.

Posted by: McTratior | August 25, 2008, 5:53 am 5:53 am

God bless you carlasue. my frustration stems from the fact that we progressives must not lose focus on whats really important this time. the stakes are too high to allow infighting keep us from winning this election. as much as some dems are angry with obama, there is no way from a progressive’s perspective to think that mccain will be an advocate for our causes. you know he will have cheney and rove at that white house all the time making the same decisions. we dont need that!

Posted by: toddo | August 25, 2008, 5:56 am 5:56 am

exactly toddo!!!! i agree with you. now on this note, i must go to sleep. it is 5 am here and i have to work 12 hour days all this week. good thing we agree to disagree, but agree in the end, as we are the backbone of what all shall be….democrats for life!!!! till later all my blog friends, goodnite to you and god bless you tooo!!!!!

Is this like Cindy McCain saying she is the only child, and has two step sisters, and one of them is protesting the fact that she is not being acknowledged? this story was on Huffington post recently!!!!

Posted by: merle7 | August 25, 2008, 6:05 am 6:05 am

Do you know why Obama didn’t send money to his half-brother? It’s because Barack and Michelle are elitists and wouldn’t even consider helping others that can’t help advance them in someway.

Posted by: LauraR | August 25, 2008, 6:23 am 6:23 am

Apparently whomever said this:
Isn’t this kind of a weird attack for the Texas GOP to launch given the recent revelation of Cindy McCain’s “angry” and estranged half-sister?
Can’t figure out that Cindy isn’t running for president or going around telling all of us to do more for our fellow citizens.

Posted by: Peach | August 25, 2008, 6:23 am 6:23 am

Cindy McCain have 2 half sister’s she does not acknowledge; always stating she is an only child. Now, it’s been corrected to say she was “raised” as an only child.

Posted by: MyAudacity | August 25, 2008, 6:29 am 6:29 am

McAudacity — Don’t you know that according to Brother Obama, one is not to attack the wives of the candidates?
Except, oops, then Obama turned right around and did that. tsk tsk
Obama sure is good at telling the rest of us how to live while he does whatever he pleases.

From McCain’s book on torture:
Eventually, I gave them my ship’s name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant. Pressed for more useful information, I gave the names of the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line, and said they were members of my squadron. When asked to identify future targets, I simply recited the names of a number of North Vietnamese cities that had already been bombed. [Page 194*]

Posted by: angie | August 25, 2008, 7:13 am 7:13 am

McCain should only be President because he knows how to and will make the Govt work toward the betterment all the people of this country, not because we feel sorry for him for getting shot down in Vietnam.

According to people posting here, it is OK for Obama to let his half brother live in a shack in Kenia, because…Cindy McCain has a stranged sister.
So we check first on McCain to see if Obama is justified in doing something wrong.

Posted by: rodney | August 25, 2008, 8:03 am 8:03 am

This is pathetic. Has the GOP done much to help anyone living in poverty? Why is Obama responsible for a relative he doesn’t even know and has only met? The Texas GOP (and the GOP in general) would rather try to create silly distractions like this than discuss their policies for the last 8 years and where it has left us.

Posted by: mary | August 25, 2008, 8:03 am 8:03 am

“Isn’t this kind of a weird attack for the Texas GOP to launch given the recent revelation of Cindy McCain’s “angry” and estranged half-sister?”
That is the reason for this ad.
Where is there an example of Obama doing anything for his brothers, sisters, grandparents, parents…or doing anything for anyone that was not politically motivated?

Posted by: rodney | August 25, 2008, 8:07 am 8:07 am

@ rodney regarding money to charities:
In 2007, the Arizona senator reported $405,409 in total income and contributed $105,467, or 26 percent of his total income, to charity.
In 2006, Mr. McCain said he had $358,414 in total income and donated $64,695, or 18 percent of his total income, to charity.
Last year Obama made over $2,000,000 in salary and book profits. His percent of charity money is not much.
Before he ran for President he gave very, very little and most of it to Rev. Wright’s church.

Why are you Obama supporters so jealous of Cindy’s money. Her father earned it the hard way after he came out of the military! At least John and Cindy take care of family. His boys from the 1st marr. work for Cindy’s co. What has Obama done for his family!! His father was a plagimist and a drunk! Read what Cindy has down for charity and read what Michelle has done for charity!! really tips the scales!! Maybe when John is president he will send Obama’s bro some money and maybe the “Kennedy’s” will bring the bro to the US like Obama lied and said the Kennedy’s brought his father to the US. I was for Clinton and now for McCain! Vote Country first and Party Second!!

Sally J I did not read all the comments to see if someone pointed this out to you BUT…. It is easy to give $105,000 away when you want for NOTHING when your wife pays every bill for everything buys a Jet so you can fly everywhere and it doesn’t get but in as a campaign funds. Hell he could give it all away and not miss it I mean they have 100 million and 13 mil. in prop. that makes Obamas 2 million look like horse crap and to talk about his brother and grandmother living, like they do do you really want to bring up things like his ex and her sister and how heleft his ex for well you know the story and if you don’t I am sure you soon will!!!

The Repubs just don’t get it do they. Cindy has a half sister she has written off also, I saw the interview. I also saw the interview with Obamas half brother. They met, they never clicked and he is good with it. People need to get a grip. It is not about color, half brothers or sisters it is about the issues. We do not do this right this time we will not have a healthy america in 4 years we will be in deep trouble.

Obama is the most corrupt candidate that I have seen in years and he has Only been in politics for a short while. Corruption has gotten him where he is today. If elected we can have a new slogan for the USA.
CORRUPTION, THE AMERICAN DREAM!

Posted by: Alex | August 25, 2008, 9:18 am 9:18 am

If you watch the interview, Barack’s half brother seems very at ease and at peace in his life. He doesn’t want to leave Kenya. Watching it, the first thought I had was some Repub was going to use it against Barack. What has John McCain done to help the poor? He ate birthday cake while people were dying in New Orleans during Katrina. His only concern in life is war and ‘winning’. He is still fighting the Vietnam War today. That is reasonable giving what he went through but it offers us, I think, a mentally unstable candidate. Too dangerous for America: John McCain.

Posted by: linda | August 25, 2008, 9:21 am 9:21 am

check out the story on npr’s site regarding cindy mccain’s half-sister’s. if this family does not care about their own family, do you think they care about the average american in these desparate times.

Posted by: pearl roussea | August 25, 2008, 9:24 am 9:24 am

PEACH: You can quote his book all day long, but McCain’s recollection changes according to his audience. When he was in Pittsburgh, PA campaigning during the primaries, his story was that he recited the names of the Steelers – NOT the Packers – lineup! Intentional or just another senior moment? Of course he was also AGAINST the GI bill until it became a law and now he’s all FOR it. Then he was AGAINST off-shore drilling until the oil lobby paid big bucks to his campaign and now suddenly it’s the solution to end the energy crisis. And I agree with quite a few others on this post – just how is Obama’s half brother situation any different than Mrs Mc’s half sister? AT least Obama doesn’t go around saying he’s an only child.

Posted by: CC and R | August 25, 2008, 9:33 am 9:33 am

Why is it that all we haer about McCain is “he’s a war hero.” Is that going to be the Republican answer for everything? There are lots of war heros. We are looking for a President and he will have to deal with issues in the real world that can not be answered with “he’s a war hearo.”

Mccain left his wife after returning from being pow because she was in a disfiguring car crash…. what does that say about his character?
I mean, how can you criticize obama for not taking care of his half brother that lives in another world? lol
why doesnt cindy mccain send aid to obamas brother, shes has enough money

Let’s stop getting in the gutter and stay FOCUSED.

Can someone explain to me? How does getting shot down by enemy forces make someone an untouchable war hero? Do republican have no shame at all? John Kerry risked his life to save the troop mate. Still the republicans managed to swift boat him into being almost unelectable in 2004. Now they want to make a sacrosanct war hero out of a guy who got captured???

It amazes me how stupid some people are. Hint: not everyone living in other parts of the globe wrap their lives around obtaining material goods. How bout that? Obama’s half-brother, that he’s met all of once in his life, is content and not looking for anything from Obama. He wishes him well. Not the same can be said for the second Mrs. McCain’s half-sister. Oh no, there is clear animosity there. Its as if the GOP is in some sort of parallel universe where they think these little snide ads dont actually apply to their own candidate. Could it be they realize the people that would buy it are so stupid they can pass it off? That must be it.

Wow desperate acts by desperate people/ party!!! Get real…when foreigners come over here and send money back home they get slammed now they want Barack to take care of someone he barely knows. The man just paid off his student loan a couple years ago. Didn’t have any money until his books were re-released. Which still boggles my mind how this man got stuck with the elitist title. Grew up basically just a step above poort. AMERICA!!and the GOP!! I don’t know about you but I am tired of being manipulated by them and their bullying tactics.

Jim Hensley did not earn his money honestly. He was a convicted felon who set up front companies, and laundered money for gangsters, thus was his first liquor, and gambling businesses. He is as dirty as a white horse in the mud. He is not what you want your children to be, unless you revere criminals.

This ad seems more focused on imagery than making a point about Obama “taking care of his own family”. I think this ad is a lame excuse to show a picture of a Barack look-alike impoverished black man to scare voters. I know for a fact that the Texas GOP does not care about Obama’s brother. They’re just trying to scare people.

Cindy McCain has two half sisters — one from her Dad’s first marriage and another from a non marital relationship. A good deal of the McCain charitable contribution goes to their own foundation.

Posted by: Dan | August 25, 2008, 11:24 am 11:24 am

Mary Ok: First, I’m sure the impact of Obama’s work wasn’t insignificant to the people who he helped. I don’t like to address others’ comments – but this one is particularly offensive to people (like myself) who have worked hard and struggled (financially) to get a good education, could work in corporate America and make stacks of money – but instead choose to use our education to work to make this world better for those who are less fortunate. Obama was a community organizer when he could have had any job he wanted…he CHOSE to help others…You need to at least Respect that, if you don’t want to vote for him for some other LEGITIMATE reason, fine.
Second, and in response to this ridiculous ad – we don’t know what kind of a relationship Obama has with his brother (for all we know this isn’t his brother…the RNC isn’t exactly a bastian of truth)– but I’m certain that if this man and his family lived in a nicer home and had received money from Obama – the RNC would be running ads pointing out that Obama had given money to an East African Muslim Group (gasp).
It makes me sad and frustrated that the polls are even CLOSE here…I can not believe that there are so many gullible people left in the American electorate that after EIGHT YEARS of Bush/McCain Policies – people would support more of the same policies that got us into this mess… (and if you think McCain is a Maverick – go to the Senate website and look at his record – he voted w/ BUSH 95% of the time)

Posted by: Mel | August 25, 2008, 11:29 am 11:29 am

Here’s a thought – Maybe George Obama would find it offensive to be offered charity from a virtual stranger – blood relation or not. Some cultures, often even ours, look down on accepting hand outs.
The Texas GOP don’t know or care whether Barack ever offered or if doing so would be a social disgrace to his barely known half brother.
For all the folks howling about the Obama family’s charitable giving-how about the McCain’s making the bulk of their donations to private schools while attended by their kids? Doubt that money helped any poor folks.

Obama loves to spend other people’s money–our money.
But when it comes to giving, Obama and Biden do not like to part with their own money.
Obama gave 4-6% of his income in 2005-06
and Biden gave 1/3 of one per cent of his income.
Oh and how much did McCain give to charity in 2007?
Twenty-seven percent of his income.

Cindy in NC,
The McCains can afford to give a higher percentage of their income to charity than the Obamas or the Bidens because they are filthy rich. The McCains are the ones with 7-11 houses (depending on how you count them). Obama and Biden only have one house each.

Posted by: John Miami | August 25, 2008, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

Cindy in NC quotes the extremely misleading statistic that McCain gave 27% of his income to charity in 2007, comparing that to what is supposed to look like a paltry 6% from Obama. But consider that McCain reported his $405K income separately from that of his multi-millionaire wife. 27% of $405K is a little over $109K…a pittance compared to the McCains’ net worth of somewhere between $40 and $100 million. McCain could donate 100% of his income and it still wouldn’t amount to much more than a rounding error compared to his total wealth. So keep quoting that statistic if you want to illustrate what a cheapskate he is.
And BTW, about Obama wanting to spend “our money”–unless you make over $200K per year, your taxes would either stay the same or decrease under Obama’s economic plan.

McCain opened the door when he said..”uhhh…I’ll have to ask my staff”. His words, not Obama’s.
Obama just repeated what he said!
Obama never attacked McCain’s family. Cindy McCain kept saying she was an only child. Her nephew called the press and said…Hey my mother is her half sister! He was tired of the McCain saying pretty much his mother didn’t exist. And now there are Two sisters!!!
Cindy and John McCain put on their website that their daughter Bridgett was brought here b/c mother theresa begged cindy to bring her back to the US for medical care. Not true….none of it. She never spoke to mother theresa on that trip! The PRESS investigated that story. They have since taken it off the McCain official website! And Obama not his campaign has ever commented on it!!
So, Obama has a brother, he never knew, that was raised in a different country.

The Republican ad on George Obama, Sen Obama’s half-brother is nothing more than Imperialist trash. George Obama lives in a 3rd world country where he has a home, not a “shack”. To refer to his home in Kenya as a “shack” is the the high-handed eyes of an arrogant American. George Obama & Sen Obama have other brothers and sisters, a sister that lives in Europe, a brother that is a PH.D.–why didn’t the Republicans look them up and feature them?

A load of interesting stuff about John McCain from brother Joe.
1. It shows John’s Oedipus Complex with Cindy mirroring the role his mother had when he was a boy.
2. Shows his family was Navy royalty with both father and grandfather being admirals.
3. Shows how out of touch the McCains are with average people — Mom was managing the oil leases [my mom did that too LOL!] and John knows how Americans are because he serves on a committee.
4. Finally, brains don’t flow on the male side as dad and grandpa finished near the bottom of their classes along with John.
“The person who took care of all the business was my mother,” he said. “My father had no idea about the family business, what oil leases he owned in Oklahoma.”
Joe McCain, who makes his home in Washington’s Northern Virginia suburbs, chuckled when recalling that “one time, [John McCain's mother] bought a house to remodel” in Southeast Washington while “[dad] was at sea.”
John McCain’s years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee also help him “emphasize with the American people” on pocketbook issues, Joe McCain said.
John McCain was a less-than-stellar student who graduated fifth from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy.
“By the way, that’s a McCain tradition,” he said. “My father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, and they graduated in the bottom fourth of their class, too.”

Debra, we already know how Republicans handle charity, but I’m glad you brought it up
For Repubs, charity money is tax deductable. Charity money is funneled into their own Charity Funds, and then that money is used to lavish their own family or friends with contracts.
Two quick examples: Barbara Bush’s Katrina donations ended up in her son’s Neil Bush cashbooks.
Cindy McCain’s ‘Charity Fund’ donated money to her son’s Private School.

If an ad is coming from the mccain camp and his supporters, you can pretty much count on it being hooey. That’s all they have left. They can’t run on the issues, so like jr. high students they make things up. Too bad those 28%ers are still gullible enough to fall for it.

MrCoffee Finishing in the bottom forth of a class would mean you would finish 75-100 out of 100. In John McCains case to finish in the bottom tenth of his class means you would finish 90-100 out of 100. 15 points difference, can make a big difference.

And for the record Obama’s father may be black but Obama will never be black or white because he is Mulatto the offspring of a black father and white mother. Jessie Jackson would have been the first black president if elected. Obama will not. This name is also in the dictionary and on the internet and I knew that since I was young. The media don’t want to call him that or the black people resent that name but that’s what he is and it stands that way. I would not hesitate to tell him that myself if I had the chance.

But that does not mean that we do not have differences of opinion regarding who we would vote for. I thought that Obama would choose Hillary as his VP and since that didn’t happen I am forced to write her name in or vote McCain. I am a democrat but have voted republican before if I don’t like the choices that the democrats make. Obama is well aware of the fact that Nancy Pelosi demanded the superdelegates vote immediately and vote for Obama so Hillary could not become president. Everyone knows that she is more experienced in politics and foreign policy but got cheated on the MI and FL delegates. Now they want them to be seated because Obama is the nominee. I am hoping the republicans take over the house so we can rid ourselves of Nancy Pelosi.

There is suppose to be many woman superdelegates and they can do it for her. Years ago there was a backlash at he democratic convention where the nominee lost after the votes were in. Republicans are shameless. How can they justify Cindy McCain selfishness? Her sisters are real, and live in America. She denies them, and takes all his father’s fortune for herself alone, while they are almost starving. And that wasn’t enough for her, she denies their own existence: “I am the unique child”.
Obama might not have known he’s got that brother, since he was himself abandoned by that same father.
If Republicans had a little scruple, they should omit that story. At least they are so sure of the stupidity of the American people, I don’t see how they try so hard to manipulate us this way.

This is a little late, but I didn’t even know about these ads (I live in San Francisco, McCain didn’t campaign here). The thing is that I doubt George would accept any help from Barry. He seems to dislike Barack, and even if he didn’t I doubt he’d want to depend on his half-brothers charity. Barack Obama had another half-brother in Kenya and they seem to have a pretty good relationship; they were best man at each other’s weddings.
