Today’s Campaign Contest: Count the Young White Women in McCain’s Anti-Obama Video
How many young white women professing adoration for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, can you count in this anti-Obama web video that the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, was sending out yesterday?
One…two…three…four…sure are a lot of young white women in this thing….
Why do you think they put so many young white women professing their love for Obama in what is clearly an anti-Obama video? What would possibly be negative about young white women liking Sen. Obama?
When asked, the McCain campaign says they took the video from local news packages, but of course that doesn’t explain anything.
- jpt
UPDATE: McCain campaign senior adviser Mark Salter writes to say: "All we are suggesting is ‘the kids think he’s dreamy. But should he be president?’"
UPDATE 2: Looks like the McCain campaign has taken the video off youtube.
UPDATE 3: The McCain camp has re-posted their video on youtube HERE with the explanation that they had to remove Wayne and Garth from the clip. "Video changed per Mike Myers’ ‘people,’" says McCain spox Brian Rogers. "Apparently we aren’t worthy."

Navy SEAL Commander Advised: Get the Hell Out of the Media
Maybe it explains that journalists like to interview young white women because that is where the story is. Interviewing young black women gets the same answer in 9 out of 10 cases by polling. That’s not news.
You might want to find out how many of the journalists and cameramen are young white males.

It must be a slow news day. Ben,
You guys have to admit it; the press is getting bored without Obama on the scene. I have been paying attention to the news since Obama went on Vacation and one thing I can tell you is that the news cycle is not good without him.
Most of the local news are so weak and even the national media doesn’t have anything to write about. I wasn’t surprise when the only news on the cable network is about Clinton’s memo. Again, that tells me how boring McCain is. I thought McCain is press darling, why can’t you guys cover him with ardent intensity.

There weren’t THAT many young white girls in the video – maybe 4 out of 12 (I’m not counting the fast food girl since she didn’t talk about how she felt about Obama)
Besides – the young white girls represent mindless swooning over his charisma and good looks. Older people or young guys swooning would have looked silly.

Harold Ford Jr., meet Barack Obama.
I’m not so certain the parallel is exact, but it seems to me that the McCain campaign is hoping that Obama or his surrogates cry racism, so the racial debate, which favors McCain, continues.
I don’t think Obama or his surrogates will take the bait, but that may be irrelevant, since prominent liberal commentators may inject the charge in the political debate (Bob Herbert, et al).
The ad is pretty lame anyway. I think the whole celebrity meme has run its course. Frankly, it’s making me question whether McCain is running for President of the United States or for High School Class President.
Finally, the McCain campaign is still pushing the now, demonstratively false charge that Obama will raise taxes on folks making about $42 grand. When will the campaign stop pushing what is now recognized as an outright lie? Under the Obama tax plan, anyone making more than 227K a year will see a tax increase. His tax plan is progressive and not regressive.

Talk about interviews:
Is it time for shaved ice and body surfing in Hawaii? Sometimes Mr. President “to be” vacations might be interrupted. Calling for “calm, U.N. action and “restraint” from both sides” seems totally out of context. The Russians are dropping bombs, jets are firing missiles and killing people, it seems that “restraint” Mr. Obama seems an odd and weak response. Your first 3:00am call and you FAILED.

I’m not sure what the young white women have to do with anything? Everyone sounds stupid in the ad…I like it! Obama is not experienced and I’m glad they keep showing that.

I don’t get it. Are you suggesting young white women do not support Obama, or that they shouldn’t be seen supporting Obama? I thought Obama transcended race?

Hmmmm……. I thought Obama had a woman, and and white problem? Funny then that he should be chastised because some white women like him.
McCain is absured.

Nice try Ann. Obama’s responses have been consistent with both the Bush Administration and the World Community at large.
We can dissect blame as the facts become clear, but to suggest that Obama’s response was tepid and weak belies the facts and is outright demagoguery.

Unfortunately Obama can’t call McCain on these loathesome tactics or else he’ll be accused of calling MCCAIN a “racist,” which is just what McCain wants. So just brush that dirt off your shoulders Barack and keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t fall into the trap.

Do you deny that most of the people who support Obama happen to be white?
If McCain had edited the clip to show mostly black people, you would have been complaining that McCain was being racist by showing that only blacks support Obama.

Spacecat,
I personally hope McCain continues running ads like this. It marginalizes him.
I talk to republicans everyday that think McCain has lost it, and that the ads reflect jealousy, childishness, and an unfitness for the office he’s running for.
I say to the McCain campaign, keep up the good work!
Posted by: ChrisNBama | August 12, 2008, 9:58 am 9:58 am
I think that if conservatives were as obsessed with race as liberals, we could find a reason why “young white women” appear in the ad.
Instead of looking at their race, why can’t you listen to what they are saying?
Posted by: w3bgrrl | August 12, 2008, 10:00 am 10:00 am
If you compare Obama to a black person (like Clinton did with Jesse Jackson), then you’re a racist.
If you compare Obama to a white person (like McCain did with Paris Hilton), you’re a racist.
If you show black supporters of Barack Obama, you’re playing the race card. If you show white supporters of Obama, you’re playing the race card.
If you bring up race in any sense, you’ll be branded a racist (unless you’re Barack Obama himself…then it will send a “thrill” up the leg of Chris Matthews).
If you say he’s too skinny, too elitist, to inexperienced, you are using “codewords” for racism.
So the only way to not be called a racist is to accept Obama as your personal savior and President.

I’ll play. Exactly 6 people were featured in the ad, if you count the genuflecting woman (who was not young) and the Taco Bell woman (who did not refer to Obama) and don’t count Garth and Wayne.
Exactly 3 were white women.
So, to paraphrase the best movie of all time… “where all the white women at?”

Lame amateur video, even lamer to try to make this a race or gender thing. The video highlighted men just as much as women and not all the women were young. Must be a slow day.

All campaigns manage the image they project when a candidate gives an address. It’s called stagecraft and Reagan and Bush are masters of it.
McCain learned this lesson the hard way. When he finally secured the nomination and gave his speech, his back drop was a bunch of droopy eyed, fossilized republicans in the background.
Someone in Camp McCain quickly recognized the error, and the next campaign event showed McCain with lots of young, fresh faces in the back drop.
It’s not that McCain has a lock on this demographic, Obama owns it, but that he wants to project youthfulness and vitality.

Ad starts with a black woman, then has about 6 or 7 white women, and what appears to be one or two latino men. Considering blacks make up about 15% of the population, the ad would seem to meet the official politically correct racial diversity targets.
If you look at a typical local news cast, they typically have young white women. Also, the whole premise of the ad is people joining a fan club–fan clubs are usually populated by young women.

Obama’s the one who only puts white people in his own background! He forced Muslim women out of the background in Michigan. Next time you see an Obama rally, count the black women behind him, there aren’t any! (because Obama and his handlers don’t want them there!!)

Jake, in order to shore up his desperately weak bona fides for the rabid left, would have had the McCain campaign artificially assume that there is only two of every race – one male and one female – so that his ad would have had two Hispanics, two whites, two blacks, two Asians, two “natives”.
This way it would have been just like a Pepsi commercial (except that in the Pepsi commercials all the “black” people are half white, because they’re the only ones the modeling agencies like right now).
Gosh, it’s so hard to be a liberal!

Is it a bad thing for Obama to control the images he projects? Because if it is, then you are indicting McCain too, who does the same thing.
McCain purposely places young people in places of prominence at his events, so it doesn’t look like only the aged are his constituency.
Although, I don’t think he does a particularly good job at it, but then he has to work with the cards dealt to him. His events are peopled by the overwhelmingly white and old. Not a very good thing when you are running for President of a very diverse nation.

Hello Smith,
I don’t criticize the republican’s for doing it at all. I rather commend them for controlling the message.
The posts I was responding to were posts where conservatives were lambasting Obama for selecting the back drops for his events.
I will say that I think his campaign went too far with the women with headscarves, but when you have viral emails tarring the candidate as a Manchurian Muslim candidate, then you can’t be too careful.

John McCain’s advertisments are just plain weird and desperate. McCain is trying to distract people from the fact that he supports an unpopular war in Iraq. We should recall that this war has killed over 4,100 American Soldiers. That’s a lot of Americans. Also, McCain will do anything to make people forget that he’s best-friends with Bush. So overall, McCain is trying to distract voters from the fact he’s a warmonger and a fear-monger, just like George W. Bush.

Ann,
It appears that you dont have good knowledge of what is happening in Georgia and South Ossetia.
Georgia attacked South Ossetia, a province with a population of a little over 70,000 and killed almost 2000 Civilians and 14 Russian Peace Keepers on the day the Olmpics games commenced. A day in which the World was supposed to be celebrating peace and friendship.
So if Mexico had attacked a State like Arizona, what do you think the US Government would have done?
I am sure you are old enopugh in 1991 to know what caused the first Gulf War.
Iraq attacked Kuwait and the US attacked Iraq to dislodge the Iraqi Armies from Kuwait.
What is the difference in the case we have now and the case we had then?
Of cause, Americans prefer a President who can talk tough. It gives Americans a sense of Security for their president to bully other Countries. That is why it is so easy for them to work on your emotions, tell you lies which in most cases, are swallowed hook, line and sinker.
Georgia was the aggressor. They attacked first and killed innocent Civilians. If what the US did in Kuwait was justified, Russia’s action in Georgia is also justified.
Mccain’s statements were therefore, mere rhetorics, empty boasts that are just for the consumption of People like you.

Now why in the world would they feel the need to do that? An assumption that white people need to see the white half of Barry with more white people?
And John McCain is a racist? What is the definition of the word “racist” anyway?

“I was making a historical reference, so my syntax was incorrect. Thanks for pointing it out.”
It’s one of the funnier bits in an otherwise tapped out topic. Apologies. I’m just messin’ with ya.
“So you don’t disagree then with my fundamental point I take it.”
If your point is they are deliberately stoking the Mandingo Syndrome, I don’t think so. I think they are outing the silliness of the Barack As Rock Star syndrome. If as Belle says, these people all have groupies, then the voter is being asked to decide how much the numbers based on groupies should influence a choice for President.
The point is clear: Obama is a market product, not a leader. There is a Robert Redford movie “The Candidate” that explores that topic. They are destroying his ‘inevitability’ shield and doing a good job of it. They have to get this done before the convention to turn Obama’s convention spectacle tactics against him. The post convention ads will be more interesting because then they have to show what makes McCain different.

He also plans to levy Surtax on Oil Companies excess Profit to enable the government give a rebate of $1,000.00 to low Income Americans.

Many older white voters grew up during segregation when interracial relationships of any kind were dangerous and in some cases dangerous and illegal.
It appears the McCain campaign is “dog whistling” to these voters who may still be very uncomfortable with the thought of white women feeling any kind of attraction toward a black man.
If McCain is running a campaign this low, what kind of President would he be?

Thanks Len for your response. I think buttons are being pushed with this ad. It’s deliberately provocative to elicit charges of racism from anyone associated with Obama, which the McCain camp will swat down and return fire that Obama is playing the “race card”. This works to McCain’s favor on many levels, and to deny this strategy, I think, is disingenuous. For the record, I don’t think McCain or his campaign is inherently racist, just cynical and toying with racial politics.

I absolutely agree with you that this is McCain’s strategy. I think he’s overreached though. He’s insulting voters in the process. The “so-called” groupies. Obama leaning independents, and even McCain leaning independents, will be turned off by such tactics.
The additional problem with this strategy is that, I don’t think, the American people are buying the argument that Obama lacks substance. Experience, absolutely, but not substance. This issue had salience in the democratic primary until Hillary attacked Obama on this fact, and Obama countered with more substantive responses.
Finally, I don’t think this sort of strategy is going to work in a change election, which this is. I think the American people are willing to allow a fresh face to take the reins of power.

@chris: “I think buttons are being pushed with this ad.”
Ads push buttons by their nature as ads. I can go over the Obama tactics in that direction but it wastes space.
As to who feels insulted, who feels fear, who is hopeful and so on, you should watch Redford’s film. All these tactics can and are used to put candidates into office but once there, they have to govern and that is a very different problem.
This is going to be a close election and it will, IMHO, come down to emotional confidence in the choice as it always does. What the primaries revealed is Obama is weaker than his supporters pretend. He won in the caucuses, not in the vote so claims made about the voter this or that are hard to substantiate. I don’t think as many voters have made up their mind as is claimed. The race is decided in the last two weeks and there is plenty of water to cross between now and then. The Democratic boats are leaking badly. How much will that affect Obama? I don’t know.

If the only way the Obama campaign has to get people against McCain is to claim everything he does is racist, I find that to be completely pathetic. Honestly now, give up the age old cop out of racism and show why you are qualified to be president! No one thinks you are UNQUALIFIED because you are black, its because of your lack of experience. Stop using the color of your skin to go against the white candidate already. It’s the white people who keep crying racism, we don’t look at skin color anymore, it’s the african americans who keep bringing it up trying to use it to their advantage. and that is ridiculous.

Actually, McCain is not advancing in the polls at all, but I realize that is the current “story.” Obama remains 2-5 points ahead of McCain nationally, with leads in most of the swing states. That is not likely to change very much until people start paying attention again.

I can’t help but think McCain has been jaded and transformed into a typical politician after his 2000 campaign. I’m no longer sure what, if anything he stands for, aside from doing whatever it takes to undermine his opponent. All of his “positive campaign” talk went out the window. Notice that his ads only talk about his ideas and policies as a footnote after using the first 3/4 of each commercial to bash his opponent. I don’t see much Bush in McCain, but his public persona certainly reminds me of a pre-impeachment Nixon…

How was the McCain camp supposed to find video of kids who are not young white women? It’s impossible. Doesn’t exist.
No racist insinuation in this ad. Move along, folks.

What a great ad from the McCain camp. Light hearted and witty, it hits home on the inexperience of Senator Obama and the somewhat thoughtless adulation he recieves. You almost need to be a racist yourself to see any race issue here. I like the humor that McCain is using; it is in stark contrast to the self important overly serious nature coming from Senator Obama.

Some of us Americans are totally naive or as the song says “Still crazy after all these years”. I give the McCain campaign credit they have figured out that a high per-centage of the population is in denial as it relates to “Racism”,or simply “Racist” themselves. Since I am a 65 year old southern “White” male, I know “Rascism” when I see it and the Ads are disgusting and plays to our fears as it relate to a “Black” man. From reading the blog the Ad works. SO Mission Accomplished team McCain.

Towards the end of the Ad, Two white men were seen to be paying obeisance. Obeisance as in when one is in servitude.
Those that say the Ad is not racist, can you please give me the proper interpretation of this?
Mccain was also calling on Europe to intervene in the Russian/Georgian conflict and he accused Obama of being popular in Europe, who will the European Government pay heed to, A President that is well loved by their Citizens or a Government that is only being tolerated. I hope you know that American Government undr Bush is only being tolerated world over.
Those outside the US keep wondering how Americans with all their sophistication and education could fall for the antics that have been played on the in these past seven years. It beats my imagination too!

Desperation tactics plain and simple. At one point I thought McCain was above this type of politics of innuendo especially since he was a victim of it himself in 2000. Guess he sold himself out in order to even have a chance at winning.

If you are implying some unspoken racist message, like “Obama will steal our white women”, I say nonsense.
It is Team Obama that has made sure that the cheering faces behind the candidate at televised events are predominately white, and lately, white and female (presumably to court the Hillary vote).
Have you forgotten the “more white people” story or the two Muslim women in headscarves who were told they could not sit behind the Chicago Senator at a televised event?
Posted by: Stephen Gianelli | August 12, 2008, 11:27 am 11:27 am
This is where Obama should be hammered. People are voting for him because he’s a rock star.
Obama hasn’t accomplished anything or been a leader of anything. Not in politics, business or the military.
As a lawyer there isn’t a single piece of scholarship Obama has authored. Which as an editor of the Harvard Law review don’t you think that’s kind of odd?
Even Obama’s stint as a community organizer in Chicago hasn’t been successful enough to garner any mention on his website.
That’s why Obama has to stay on frilly word speeches on what he is going to do and instead of what he’s done…which for a candidate for POTUS is alarmingly little.
Keep up the attack McCain.

I’m not concerned about the adoring white women but by the statement that amounts to a lie, the bit about tax increases for anyone who makes over 42K. Like Clinton, his economic policies favor the middle class, unlike McCain who wants to further reduce taxes by 10% for the most wealthy. There have been enough lies and distortions from the last eight years.

Gosh, another negative ad from the McCain campaign. Always on the attack and that’s exactly what the majority of the voters in the United States are opposed to. That’s all the Republicans want to do is attack. They wanted to attack Iraq and they did, McCain would have attacked Russia this week had he been the President. He’s like a pitbull, always on the attack. He is too dangerous to lead our country. Not to mention possibly the most negative candidate that has ever ran for the office of Commander In Chief.

When McCain could claim he was actually running his campaign last summer, he went broke. Then he brought in Washington insiders and lobbyists to run it and they got rid of his previous staff. Now, his handlers have realized that they cannot win this campaign by talking about issues that face the American people so they have decided to get in the gutter. Is this what we want in a president?

Lisa,
1st McCain does talk about what he’s going to do to lead this country. Obama and even the White House are following McCain’s lead on the current Georgia/Russia conflict.
But McCain has been getting the best news coverage of late because he’s actually driving a very important question to the American public. Is Obama ready to lead or do you like him just because he’s a celebrity and his followers think he’s a rock star.
That’s an extremely important question and you don’t do that with ads that dryly state your policy positions.
This POTUS race is about whether or not Obama is ready to be a leader. And from his own history, I’d say no way.
The DNC has made a huge error thinking they could elect a man that is really only ready to POTUS in a Hollywood movie, not in real life.

There are only two categories of liberals: The Power Hungry and the Dupes. The Power Hungry understand perfectly well what they are doing, undermining and dividing America, and they do it for their narrow goal of short term gains of power. Almost all liberal leaders, whether elected officials, union leaders, civil rights gurus, professional feminist, some political columnist or college professors etc., are in this category. The Dupes are a little different. They are the true believers, who believe in the face of all evidence to the contrary, that liberalism improves peoples lives. They can be divided into two sub-categories, the Ignorant and the Whackos (radicals).-liya Somin

This is the exact same thing the Tennessee republican party did to Harold Ford Jr. (an African American) in a TV spot in that state’s senatorial race. They had a pretty white girl look into the camera and say “Harold call me!” in a very flirty manner. And of course the Republican won in that state because it is the south and white people don’t want to even think about black men and white women together. Trust me I know… I am from Memphis. This is racism pure and simple.

This is the typical Republican campaign, well it’s time to move past that as we all saw where that gets our country. The economy sucks big time. We’ve spent billions of dollars rebuilding a country that we went in and damaged for no good reason at all, having the Republican oilmen in the oval office has driven gas prices sky-high, many are struggling just to feed their families because of this corrupt Republican administration. Enough is Enough. If a Republican is running for office in your area just vote them out of office. They’ve destroyed a wonderful country that Bill Clinton left when his Presidency ended. Remember Katrina?????? Republican President/Republican Congress. Remember Iraq???? Republican President/Republican Congress when we attacked that country. Remember the Attorney General Gonzales? Remember Tom Delay??? Remember Larry Craig? Remember all of the other liars and crooks that have had to leave office during the current Republican Administration???? It’s been a mess and now it’s time to try something different because the current plans sure didn’t workout very well for our country and it’s citizens.

In the 2006 election Bob Corker ran an ad against Harold Ford featuring a white woman mouthing “call me Harold” into the camera. The ad was widely believed to have been targeting racial sensitivities, and the Ford campaign responded angrily. Ford’s response, however, seemed to backfire as he dipped in the final days of the election.
John McCain hired Terry Nelson, the strategist behind the “call me” ad, in the hopes of trapping Obama with the same bait they used on Ford. It is the responsibility of the media to report on the fact that McCain is using this strategy very intentionally, beginning with the choice of Britney and Paris (not Bono, Clooney, or some other politically active celebrity?). Obama didn’t take the bait, so they’re upping the ante with this “dreamy” ad.
Posted by: Jeremy | August 12, 2008, 12:01 pm 12:01 pm
Its an issue and the media is right to point it out. The GOP strategists used a similar tactic in the TN senatorial race. The strategist acknowledged that the intent to was cast a fear that black men are going after white women.
growing up in the South, the effect was well known, spoken out loud in family circles and whispered in public like church.
The GOP is using this fear to entice fear into older white Americans who remember and resisted segregation. The GOP is up to the same old bag of tricks that appeal to my parents and people of their age.

“The reason Obama is so universally liked and admired is because the people of the US are so desperate for real leadership.”
Not quite, Mike. One he isn’t universally liked and admired. 18 million democrats disagreed with that. But two, and most important, the American people have been led. They were led into a war they didn’t really want but seems to be turning in our direction. They were led into disastrous economic policies but they drove their SUVs everyday anyway.
No, what is driving the Americans to Obama is simply they want to feel good about themselves. They know they made huge mistakes just as they knew that during the Carter years; yet when Reagan told them about their greatness, their deserving to live large, their destiny, they felt good again and they voted for him twice.
Reagan was a disaster. G.W. is a disaster but they voted for both twice because both appealed to their need to feel superior.
And that is what Obama is about. Is that leadership? I suspect you won’t find out until next year if he wins, but that is how he will win unless McCain can pull away from the attack and go on the offensive with a campaign where he gives them more confidence in themselves by dint of who they believe they are than Obama is able to shame them into.

Sheryl: You are probably one of those Repubs who believes the economy is healthy and all the pilots who flew into the world trade center were Iraqis..You probably believe that if McCain wins then our economy will bounce back..The man said that he does not know much about the economy..the man is war is war oriented. Aren’t tired of wars? I am! Don’t you want to see our country’s economy return to a modicum of good health..where people can afford to buy homes and find good paying jobs..and can afford to educate their children? I do! Don’t you think that there is a connect between the war being fought in Iraq and the billions of dollars spent each month to keep the troops there and the failing economy? Lets change course! The inexperienced Obama wants to change course from wars to economy, economy, economy..Domestic policy. The experienced McCain wants to perpetuate war..his skin is itching him to attack Iran, North Korea or Russia…If you think that we can handle Russia..you got to be drinking some spiked koolaid..we have problems getting rid of a few untrained Alqueda men and lost 4000 of our well trained troops..whats gonna happen in a war with Iran,China or Russia.. Don’t you think its always better to seek peace? Lets get McCain in there and get some wars going..what say ye!

Looking at McCain talking to an audience of any kind puts me to sleep. Mostly he speaks before Vets, who don’t seem that interested. Then, when he speaks in front of an audience of his supporters, a mixed group of young, old, male, female, not one of them seems the least bit interested either. His monotone delivery of even a speech with words that mean anything or had any truth in it, is so boring, it couldn’t generate enough energy in his most ardent supporters. That guy needs a LOT of help with his speechmaking. And his ads thus far are so juvenile and ridiculous. His campaign is wasting his money. Hope they go broke – just like Hillary’s did.

Keep up the poor work John McCain……
Your own ads may very well help you lose in November………
Posted by: shalom | August 12, 2008, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm
So, now hot (white) chicks dig Obama?
There’s a history here:
-Romney compares Obama to an “internet date”
-Republicans accuse Obama of having a “love affair” with Europe.
-McCain compares him to Paris Hilton (read: sex video).
-Karl Rove paints Obama as country-clubbing Lothario
-Johnmccain headline: “The media is in LOVE with Barack.”
By couching attacks on Obama in such (dare I say “racy”?) terms, the Republicans are clearly stoking old fears about race and sex.
The only question is whether GOPers just can’t help thinking in these terms, or whether this is a concerted effort.

Nothing wrong with that ad.
Posted by: undecidedfor2008 | August 12, 2008, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm
Sure, all the McCain camp is doing by injecting white women into their campaign spots is suggesting that kids find Obama dreamy, in precisely the same way that all Mark Penn’s memoes were suggesting was that Obama’s American roots weren’t deep enough. It has absolutely nothing to do with race, who could ever believe such a thing?
Posted by: Billy Bob Tweed | August 12, 2008, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm
Jeremy, your comment, hilariously, indicates that you and your friends are totally humorless. That is the stock Obama supporter answer I was expecting.
If you think what we are going through now is the worst its ever been, you must not have ever, ever cracked open a history book.
Also, you make a weird allegation that “McCain is turning our elections and our democracy into a joke.” What does that even mean? Your answer should contain something about “oil buddies” and “imperialism,” if I am right. See? I can read your mind!
Look Obama deserves respect, but all candidates deserve mockery, too, including McCain. Mock away, just don’t get too uptight when the truth hurts after a joke is made on your man Obama.

Did you watch any of the Obama youth rallies? The Obama partisans will do anything to play the race card. As someone pointed out, I guess the only way to avoid claims of racism from certain quarters is to make sure that Barry is only shown in the vicinity of black women. You know, as long as he is shown with his own kind. But what can we expect from the group that pushes racial classification of people (for affirmative action purposes) and who still want to jail the Duke lacrosse players?
Posted by: Willis | August 12, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm
Len, that has nothing to do with McCain putting this section into his ad. You know what he’s doing, I know what he’s doing, most Americans with a brain know what he’s doing. It’s Harold Ford all over again. It’s repulsive. And it’s the only way McCain might be able to win. Some people just can’t admit it.
Posted by: CA Voter | August 12, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm
Question:
Were there only white girls in the ad or were the a proportionate number of other races? Seems that if it’s just white women then McCain is living in a white world.
Posted by: muffler | August 12, 2008, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm
Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign does the exact same thing – white folks in ads that run in white states, and black folks in ads that run in predominately black advertising markets. So, Mr. Tapper, its only bad when Sen. John McCain does it? This is the exact same type of pro-Obama “white guilt” news reporting that helped get the obviously unqualified Barack the Democratic nomination over the obviously qualified Sen. Hillary Clinton. For that reason, this lifelong Democrat is voting Republican this year.

People of all colors adore Obama. Had McCain used an inordinate number of blacks or *gasp* Muslims, that would have created a broohaha. I’m sick of this whole color thing! The only color that concerns me with Obama is the color green (as in not ready for primetime); black, white, brown, red, has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Posted by: marylou | August 12, 2008, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm
I don’t get this argument at all. There are as many guys as women in the ad. Not all the women are young or attractive, although females can tend towards being effusive, which is what they were looking for – adoring fans. They don’t have a guy on camera saying Obama has soft eyes, but so what? I think you have to have pretty serious hang ups yourself to conclude this ad is meant to have an underlying racial message. Give it up.
Posted by: JETrout | August 12, 2008, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm
Hey Jake Tapper, How about asking a tough question? Like “How can black people continue to complain about racism (when no other races seem to have problems) and do something as racist as choosing based on skin color? Why is there a steady stream of black people on tv yet indians, native americans, koreans, latino, chinese and japanese people are all but non-existent?

John so-called War Hero McCain is barely sane at this point. He is a critical failure! His ads are the most juvenile form of political discourse yet seen in this time. He despises women. His treatment of his wife Cindy is despicable. I do not think this ad is racist but terribly sexist. Portraying young women as stupid. say no to John so-called War Hero McCain!
Hillary Clinton would be decimating him with her campaign. Were she not stolen of the chance to do so.

The vast majority of the Dupes are ignorant (Hereafter, we’ll just call them Liberals). That does not mean that they are stupid, it just means that they have invested little or no time trying to figure out the objective reality of actions and consequences. We are all inevitably ignorant about a vast range of matters, because they don’t interest us much, and because we have little or no incentive to learn about them. For most people, politics falls into that category. The same goes for many other bodies of knowledge, such as theoretical physics or economics. Because an individual vote has almost no chance of determining the outcome of an election, a person whose only reason to acquire political information is to make sure that the “best” candidate wins is quite rational to invest very little time in learning such things. Unfortunately, political ignorance is a classic example of a situation where rational and intelligent behavior by individuals leads to poor collective outcomes. Iiya Somin

cincyr, its worse than that.
The effective corporate tax rate on over two-thirds of US corporations is ZERO.
Two-thirds of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes between 1998 and 2005, according to a new report from the GAO.
In addition, 68% of foreign companies doing business in the US paid no income taxes either.

don brown – if you’re trying to imply that McCain will do a better job of keeping our country safe – I have to disagree. McCain is nothing more than a continuation of Bush. Age means experience but experience does not always equate to sound judgment. Good judgment is not spouting off with war cries at the instant a conflict is started in another part of the world by tossing out a kneejerk response memo. Good judgment means a solid review of the issues surrounding the conflict BEFORE responding with an understanding of America’s ability or unfortunately due to our current engagements, inability to back up what it says. Bush (who McCain now follows blindly) started a war that was wrong to start, spread our armed forces thin throughout two wars and has literally done nothing to secure our OWN boarders. Bush has created the highest deficit in the history of the United States and given us a recession to show for it. NOT SECURITY!

Think of it in the same terms as Paris reclined in a bathing suit claiming to be ready to pick her Vice-President. It exposes silliness.
Yes, Reagan was a disaster. We’re still paying the bills for voodoo economics. What country am I from? One that doesn’t appreciate being tricked or trickled on.

Yes, Reagan was a disaster. During his 8 years in office, there was unprecedented deficit spending. He supported both sides during the war between Iran and Iraq. the fact of the matter is that many obama lemmings are infatuated with this pseudo-cult leader (whose ads just encourage others to “join us”)….he’s a charmer who makes grandiose speeches and eloquent criticism of dubya and those who disagree with him and borrows heavily his policies and plans from Senator Clinton’s policies and plans and hides his hypocrisy by way of political spin and the shield of “a new kind of politics”……he joined and eventually abandoned a church of god for political purposes, he exaggerated the nature and behavior of his schoolmates in his book to make himself look more progressive and tolerant, he has consistently aligned with questionable characters (which could be explained away if such an alliance occurred only once or twice, but the more it happens, and the more he futilely tries to lie his way out of such an association, the more questionable his judgment becomes)….

I think the targeting approach behind the ad is directed towards the undecided, which would include a sizable number of former Clinton supporters. The false claim of Obama increasing the taxes on incomes above 42K is aimed at a large segment of the working and middle class. In addition to exploiting Clinton demographics, there is the exaggeration of the media hype surrounding Obama, something which a number of former Clinton supporters were cynical about.

When clinton left office there was a so called surplus of 133B. President Bush returned 33B to the tax payers, and applied the rest to the public debt, which was NEVER paid down during the clinton years. How can you delare a surplus when it’s owed out?
Another point – during the clinton years oil sold for 18.00 a barrel. How could he miss? No mistery, no surplus.

If I remember correctly, at least one of those wars was necessary. McCain’s hypocrisy continues to amaze me! He says he wants a respectful campaign; then he proceeds to do something totally different–and the media is lapping it up without continously challenging his tactics. He says he is not a racist; but he applies racists tactics blatantly and by code. Are there not non-White admirers of Sen. Obama? McCain knows exactly the effect he wants to create, especially within the working class people and rural Americans who may resent the spectacle of white women showing admiration for Obama. This man is determined to win at all cost–using the same tactics and people that Bush used against him when he ran in 2000. The big difference is that wheras Bush took him on, Obama has continued to show respect to McCain–respect he doesn’t deserve. Afterall, this man is bereft of an ethics and morality, though he shouts it in our ears. Afterall, it is the same man who abandoned his wife, was involved in corruption scandals when he first came to Washington, and was rejected by Republicans who chose Bush instead. Now, McCain wants us to believe that without him, America cannot be saved from its enemies.

Um, does it matter? If they were black women, would that be more racist? Less Racist? Should they be older, men, hispanic… which would blunt the criticism here?
Is there a way to have anyone of any gender and any color say anything bad about Obama without it immediately being a race-focused attack?
Of course not, what was I thinking. Either you love Obama in all his glory and splendor; or you’re a dirty racist focused solely on his race and nothing else… because Obama has no flaws, and claiming otherwise is racist.
Good to see that this candidate “transcends race” and by “transcends” I mean “using it as his sole shield against any criticism from any person at any time”. Thought I should clarify that, as it isn’t anywhere near the usual definition of “transcend”.

ZZ: Your information is incorrect. When President Clinton was elected, he inherited a massive debt from 8 consecutive years of Reagan. Clinton was able to gradually reduce the annual deficit until his last year in office, there was actually a budget surplus of 28 billion. Since Bush was elected, all we have seen is record deficits.

john….a little perspective includes realizing the power of the office of the Presidency and recognizing facts in the context of history….”gutting” the military is your own self-serving description of the downsizing of our armed services in the aftermath of the COLD WAR!…continuing the massive, and possibly irresponsible military buildup for that long period of time itself would have been irresponsible and incompetent…..in fact, Clinton increased pay and benefits for military personnel as Commander-in-Chief….as for the economy, ever hear of a little thing like “consumer confidence”? there’s not much now, but there sure was then, and the economy is strongly supported by the ability and willingness of the public to spend…speculation and perceptions drive the stock market, and actual business pushes the price of shares, which also strongly affects the market….everything feeds or starves itself as everything from home buying to grocery shopping is interrelated on the grand scale when taken collectively…..so yeah, republicans had control of congress for a bit during that time, but they also spent millions for impeachment which only drove down their job approval numbers and drove up the same numbers for Clinton, and Clinton pushed through Head Start, Clinton earned international respect and cooperation as our nation’s representative and Clinton had a great impact on our nation’s economy…..don’t complain about the lack of perspective with an argument lacking perspective….it just destroys your own credibility…

If Obama is guilty of “playing the race card” because he said that he doesn’t look like the other Presidents on U.S. currency, is McCain guilty of “playing the age card” when he pretends to fall asleep on late night tv shows and refers to himself as “old as the hills”?
Racism, sexism, ageism…none of them are attractive or particularly relevant.

Dr.Sam: Lets be honest here, both campaigns have used similar strategies. It was the Obama campaign which early on described McCain as confused which is a codeword for elderly and confused.I have rarely seen a candidate show as much disrespect for older Americans as Obama. Examining Obama’s reaction and comments to the Russian incursion and comparing them to Macain’s comments and actions, it is clearly obvious that Senator Obama is totally unprepared for serious and dangerous world events like the situation in Georgia. And on national TV just this morning, when confronted with Obama’s totally inadequate response, one of Obama’s main supporters chided the commentator and stated that foreign policy should not be used as a political point. What exactly has Mr Obama been doing all this time regarding Iraq and Afghanistan if not using foreign policy as a political point? Obama simply can’t have it both ways. Obama is simply un prepared to lead the free world in foreign policy. Obama is inexperiencd, clear and simple! Obama has clearly demonstrated that he is totally unprepared for the complex world of foreign policy! Russia’s Putin to Obama – “NO YOU CAN’T!”
Visit this website and take a careful look and see more clear proof, in Obama’s own words, that Obama is not ready for Prime Time dangerous Foreign Policy. The world is simply too dangerous to vote according to what’s chic at the momemet. It may be considered to be “In Vogue” and “Fashionable” to be an Obama supporter, but unfortunately the dangerous people in this world aren’t swayed by fashion statements.

i have seen way too many examples of obama spinning his own words, examples of his questionable judgment and many examples of sexist and racist behavior by his supporters, which directly contradicts the values and principles he supposedly champions in his epic speeches…..his own past behavior is wrought with contradictions and loopholes which allows him to be technically truthful, even though semantics allows him to violate the spirit of his promises
“i don’t take money from drug companies”…he just takes it from their ceo’s….”i don’t take money from lobbyists”…..he just takes it from their spouses and has them on his staff…..
he has been the #1 donor to superdelegates the last 3 years, he has developed friendships with questionable characters in order to further his political career, he has allowed his minions to do his dirty work for him, he has falsely and maliciously used race against his opponents…
he is a hypocrite, and when change is your central asset, the reason why so many are supporting him, such hypocrisy will prevent him from getting things done, or worse, such a refrain from accepting responsibility, as he has consistently shown, will prevent him from accepting blame when nothing gets done…..i just hope parents and families and Americans in general don’t allow him to continue to pull the wool over their eyes…

Chris,
You are completely incorrect. The president does not micro-manage the economy and does not have the power over it that you suggest. I stand behind my post as reasons why Clinton was able to have a budget surplus. I didn’t claim that the downsizing of the military was inappropriate following the Cold War, just that it played a major role in being able to balance the budget. As for consumer confidence, the media has a done a great job of making people think that things are worse than they are and making false claims of a recession when one doesn’t exist, all for the purpose of bashing Bush and helping Obama get elected. During Clinton’s administration, it was “irrational exuberance” which drove consumer confidence.
And before I forget, a budget surplus is NOT the opposite of debt; it is the opposite of DEFICIT. The national debt was $6 trillion when Clinton left office.

You are 100% correct in pointing out that it was the Dixiecrats (Democrats) who initially opposed the enactment of civil rights laws. However, once the national Democratic Party began taking the lead for civil rights (beginning with President Johnson), the Southern Democrats abandoned the party and became Republicans. John McCain opposed the initiative for a Martin Luther King Holiday. So, yes, the Democrats were late in adopting fair policies towards African Americans, but there is not a doubt today on which party is indifferent to the plight of black Americans.

john…you are correct regarding debt/deficit….however, i never said the President micro-manages the economy, but he does have an effect…you didn’t say Clinton “downsized” the military, you said he “GUTTED IT”….as for recession, as i said, everything is interrelated: oil prices, bad home loans, etc. and they affect everything else, and when many breadwinners (national guard, reserves, etc.) are sent for long periods of time into a conflict wrongly entered into (iraq), it will have an impact on those families, and taken collectively, will have some amount of effect on the economy as a whole, not to mention the price of such conflicts…furthermore, dubya doesn’t need anyone’s help to look bad, he’s done a great job of that himself….his incompetence, ignorance, and much worse, his unwillingness to learn from his mistakes, are what makes him the worst president in modern history (which i only say because i am not too familiar with the actions/inactions of many presidents prior to the last century in the context of their time period)…finally, my argument regarding Clinton’s budget surplus was in response to a post regarding the debt or deficits of the previous 3 or 4 presidents, implying that Clinton was as irresponsible as his predecessors regarding our national debt when in fact he paid down the debt a little with the surplus…..

If you look at the 59-year record of debt since the end of WWII, starting with Truman’s term, the difference between the two parties’ contributions to our national debt level change considerably. Since 1946, Democratic presidents increased the national debt an average of only 3.2% per year. The Republican presidents stay at an average increase of 9.7% per year. Republican Presidents out borrowed and spent Democratic presidents by a three to one ratio. Putting that in very real terms; for every dollar a Democratic president has raised the national debt in the past 59 years Republican presidents have raised the debt by $2.99

I’m convinced that McCain would use blatant racism in ads if it worked. McCain has shown himself to be the political equivalent of a crackhead… he would do anything to win.
I cannot understand why he would ridicule voters for being enthusiastic about a good candidate. Even if McCain thinks he’s better, he should still respect our opinions and accept that we have our own reasons for picking our candidates. He should try to convince us to vote for him instead of belittling us for not.

Plain and simple. It’s to play into the fears of some whites that black men are going to their “their women” away from them.

Since interracial marriages are apart of the American fabric, the McCain aged fears are not as prevalent with the young— but they are in the mindset of the old. Therefore Mac’s attack strategy is targeting the fear quotient in older white Americans.

Call me naive, but I remember which president ended discrimination in the armed forces. I’m old enough to remember the struggle to pass cicil rights laws during the 60s, and I remember which party was at the forefront of that battle. i’m old enough to remember why Strom Thurmond left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party. I’m old enough to remember the race-baiting campaign of Jesse Helms, and I’m old enough to remember when the then Republican Majority Leader said that we should have elected Strom Thurmond in 1948. And I remember those ads that were run in the last senatorial race in Tennessee. And I remember the Willie Horton ads too. And who hasn’t received one of those offensive emails from a friend or relative touting that “Obama is a Muslim”? To his credit, McCain did address the NAACP this year, but I can’t remember the last time that Bush came to talk with them. Have the Democrats done everything possible to promote equality? No. But John McCain needs to review the recent history of his party and ask himself if the ads that his campaign is purchasing dovetails with that history or if it attempts to establish a new message.

The sad thing is that these ads are a testament to the ignorance, laziness, and sheep-like mentality of the typical American voter. Since the inception of these negative ads which started with the “celebrity” one, McCain has actually closed the gap between him and Obama. They are very low brow cheap shots because he knows he can’t win on the issues and by continuously churning these ads out he as shown his beleif that the average American voter is a nitwit. Reacting emotionally to things (while important for instances in which one’s life is in danger or harm’s way) is a lower more primitive form of response than reacting intellectually to a situation. These ads provoke a more emotionally based response to Obama not an intellectual one.

Charles Gibson: Senator Obama, you plan to raise the capital gains tax. Senator Obama: yes. Would you raise the capital gains tax even if it resulted in a net loss of revenue for the goernment. Senator Obama: yes. Charles Gibson: If you raised the capital gainx tax to a level where it actually lowered tax revenues, that would stifle economic growth and hurt the economy. Would you still raise the capital gains tax rate if it would stifle economic growth and hurt the economy? Senator Obama — yes, because the capital gains tax rate should be fair. I don’t care how much taxes that people in developing countries pay, I don’t care how much taxes that people in socialist countries pay, and I don’t care how much taxes people in communist countries pay. I care about the USA and its citizens. I care about our economy. I care about our energy crisis. I care about our healthcare system. I care about our safety. A candidate who makes America his or her top priority will get my vote.

Obama’s salary was last year? Please do so before making churlish comments about only Republicans being rich in this damn election. All of you that complain about Republicans being rich are simply jealous. Oh, I forgot, if you won the lottery, you would donate it ALL to charity. You don’t want any part of money.

Under the Obama plan, if you sell your home you will pay more in capital gains taxes. Under the Obama plan, if you have stocks in your IRA or 401k you will pay higher capital gains taxes–and you will get less in dividends because the corporation will also have paid higher capital gains taxes. (Remember, corporate earnings are taxed twice — once at the organizational level and then again when paid to the stockholders). That means those who will be hit the hardest by the Obama tax plan are those who are desperately trying to sell their homes to avoid foreclosure and retirees who depend on dividend income to supplement their social security and small businesses who must chose between paying their taxes and making capital expenditures. Talk about fairness.

Mack – can we say “Keating Five”?
Posted by: dan | August 12, 2008, 2:57 pm 2:57 pm
Dave said, “Only in America could a rich couple paint a black man as elitist.”
Not elitist (see also “John McCain”): joining the military; giving five years of your life in enemy captivity; enduring brutal torture but refusing release before fellow soldiers who have been there longer; only believing you’re fit for the Presidency after decades of service to the country
Elitist (see also “Barack Obama”): attending affluent private schools growing up; attending the most expensive colleges and living in luxury in the most expensive places in the country; never get your hands dirty doing an honest day’s work; believe you can be President after putting in 143 days in the U.S. Senate
Elitism isn’t just about money. It’s about having everything handed to you so far, and expecting even more be handed to you.

ynot4tony2 has a strange way of defining “having everything handed to you”. Barack Obama grew up dirt poor and earned everything he has achieved. He never even mentioned he was black on his application to Harvard. John McCain was born rich and admitted to Annapolis only because of the legacy of his father and grandfather, both Admirals.

kissyface,
I know more Republicans voting for Obama than I know who are voting for McCain. That’s amazing to me, especially the two, my cousin and a friend, who are 100% opposed to abortion rights, and would like Roe v. Wade overturned. They are deeply concerned about the direction we have taken.

FALSE! He lived with his wealthy grandmothers (vice president of Hawaii’s biggest bank) and attended expensive private schools.
“and earned everything he has achieved.”
FALSE! He didn’t even earn his Senate seat. He’s a carpetbagger who was assisted by the Chicago liberal newspapers who illegally destroyed the chances of Obama’s primary opponent, and his general election opponent.
“He never even mentioned he was black on his application to Harvard.”
SO! I suppose he put on white face for his interview, genius.

Obama is arrogant and blows a lot of hot air. I think putting him in the ultimate position of authority in this country could cause a lot of heartache nationally and internationally. His race has nothing to do with it. Sorry.
Also, we act like racism is a one sided issue in this country. Can someone prove to me that African Americans have no racism towards caucasians in this country? If so, let me know!!

Obama is a flash-in-the-pan phenomenon. Once American voters scrutinize his actual accomplishments (half a term as US Senator, six years as a “community activist”), and his empty campaign rhetoric about “change”, they won’t be voting for him. I am a lifelong Democrat — I’ll be voting for McCain instead of a handsome charismatic man who has done almost nothing in his 47 years on the planet.

with Obama, everything is and will always be about racism to his minions. If elected, get ready for (hopefully no more than) 4 years where every comment, criticism and opinion that is even slightly unfavorable to Obama will be defined as racist. That will come in very handy for Obama….he can never be criticized. The liberal press will jump on every such racist charge “en masse” and self-flagelate on behalf of all of us. My prediction….race relations will get worse rather than better over the next 4 years due to the heavy-handed use of the race “trump card”.

Thanks for being vigilant. When the NYT slammed McCain for using the tactics of the Tennessee GOP in the Celeb Ad, I thought they went overboard. Having seen this video, I thought that maybe after all they had a point.
When you listen to McCain talking about the Georgia-Russia conflict, you see that his rhetoric is frozen in the time of the Cold War. The same logic seem to apply to his campaign managers who think that they can still exploit this stereotype that only Bad white girls fall in love with Black guys.

Obama is too much of an arrogant novice to know what he doesn’t know.
November 21, 2007:
OBAMA: “You know, probably the strongest experience that I have in foreign relations is the fact that I spent four years living overseas when I was a child in Asia, in southeast Asia.”
SEN. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D-NY), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: “With all due respect, I don’t think living in a foreign country between the ages of 6 and 10 is foreign policy experience.”
To call Obama a mindless buffoon is even too much praise.

I assumed there were a lot of young white women in the ad because McCain is targeting the group he appeals to…older voters.
Showing older voters that Obama has the youngsters swooning implies that Obama is just another vacuous idol of the airheads. It’s the same general message as the ad that included Paris Hilton.
It’s a subtle message and subtlety is often lost on the media so their interpretation has to be on something that’s already on their minds…racism, apparently.

It sounds as if McCain is employing the same tactics that were so effective for Bush’s father in 1988 when they ran the Willie Horton ads. If, in fact, the ad has been removed, I’m glad that the McCain campaign got the message. Based upon his dismal voting record on civil rights (he was 1 of 18 Republicans and 4 Democrats who opposed the MLK holiday in 1983, and he voted against 4 civil rights bills in 1990, and his home state rescinded the King holiday in 1987 with then Governor Meacham referring to blacks as “pickaninnies”).
So, yes, Senator Mccain, we got the message in your ad, and we didn’t like it!

That’s a part of the Obama game plan, and the MSM is helping him do it. They’re trying to guilt trip people into voting for him. I listen to C-SPAN and NPR alot and for every twenty times the MSM touches on the issue, they may touch on it once. I don’t know if I totally agree with your point that anyone that is blk that votes for Obama because he’s blk is automatticaly a racist. You kinda have to put it context….its so very rare that black people have anyone in high places that they can genuinanely look up to and trully feel good about and who is a beacon so to speak, and here you have a guy who is not just some CEO of a company but who is a pres. nominee and who is actually getting national exposure, so it doesn’t surprise me that blks have an affinity for and are drawn to Barack. Additionally, the past 8 years have left an enormous impression among many blacks that Republicans just don’t care about them so I think they’d support the democratic nominee in much higher numbers even if that nominee were white.

There will be all kinds of sidebars to this election, but I find it somewhat ironic that Senator McCain’s campaign staff is fixated on Obama’s youth, appeal to the masses (for which they liken to “Rock Star”). Something akin to wishful thinking or the glow off the rose. In McCain’s younger (very widely reported and even in his memoirs) are his escapes in the Nacy with the latin lovelies in Rio and heaven knows his attraction to his first wife (model) who was supplanted by a rodeo queen. Ironic that a young fellow from Chicago whose wife unquestionably loves him and says “I’m Michele Obama. I’m from Chicago and I’m married to a guy named Barak” has caused such a rukus. Could it be that “Memories, all alone in …” from “Cats” will be the Republican Convention opening number?

The Little Bush would probably never have been elected as governor of Texas, and we would not have experienced the awful tragedy of the last 8 years. Maybe we would have had a president who listened to the intelligence that was being generated regarding the intentions of thee terrorists. Perhaps we would not be bogged down in a needless war that has already taken the lives of 4000 of our best and over 100,000 Iraquis. When one of the reporters asked him if he planned on ever taking another question from reporters, he responded, “That depends on how well-behaved you are.” I don’t know – I just don’t think a tendency to sulk when things don’t go your way is a very good quality in a presidential candidate.

LOL I find it so humorous how the McCain supporters are so desperate to try to disparage OBAMA. Clearly we all know McCain will LOSE the election, furthermore, he is currently a loser already.
All you McCain lovers, please take a moment to extol the virtues of the previous leader you voted in office, based on the past 8 years, do you think your judgment is sound?

..seems that on this blog, McCain can do no wrong and everything the Republicans have done with the majority in congress has worked out since ‘W’ came into office…every decision has been the correct one…
whatever has gone wrong can be attributed to the Dems from ’07 on… well, that’s normal for the Republicans to say that.. if Obama is so bereft of talent and ability, it should be easy for the Republicans to shred everything he says with substantial and creditable rebuttals, but, most of the ads I see on TV don’t deal with policy issues at all…….
I don’t think McCain is the ‘riding on the white horse’ savior that he is made out to be, and equally I don’t believe Obama is any kind of savior. I do think that Republican policy has hurt this country over the 8 years and another Republican is not the answer.

Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted “present” nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

If you like the way things have been the last 8 years with Republicans doing everything from impeaching democrats to running up 2 1/2 trillion more in national debt, not to mention breking the constitution’s laws and international laws, vote for McCain. Go on…do it, I really don’t care to convince people anymore. Bush’s record speaks for itself and it’s obvious that McCain has the same twisted selfish idea about what America wants and he’ll do anything to convince you of it…ANYTHING. I only know I want a real change in direction and scope, and McCain and his propaganda machine is not convincing me he is anything but a Bush/Rove mini-me especially with these propagandist attack ads. If you want more of the same then go ahead and vote for more of the same.

one might wonder if that’s all there was to it, a ‘signal from Bush’, why it took him so long to give the signal…. after all, he is the president… and one might also wonder why with all the federal leases that have already been handed out for oil drilling, there is not more….. oil drilling

Instead of posting a partisan ramble with no relation whatsoever to the topic of the article, like the bulk of the posters so far, let me proffer the following:
No ad is innocent. Every word is measured, every image is calculated. The fact that they are all young white women was measured and calculated as to the response expected and tested to see that it was successful in that regard. If you think differently, you are naive, and probably a member of the republican base.
In general, Obama’s campaign message has been one of change, and that Bush’s policies have screwed up pretty much everything, and McCain’s policies are the same on all substantive issues. All ads are by definition one-sided and attempt to influence, but his ads to this point have been factual.
McCain’s campain has been about scaring Americans out of voting for Obama. They HAVE used racists appeals. They HAVE lied directly through their own teeth. This is easy to verify, if you have enough intellect to tear yourself away from right-wing talking point outlets, like fox news.
Obama is counting on Americans being fed up with Bush’s wholesale failures and McCain’s complete adoption of those same policies that failed so completely. This depends on Americans being able to ascertain the truth from simpleton lies and innuendo.
MCCain is hoping that Americans are too stupid and/or lazy to fact-check the lies he is putting forth. this depends on Americans behaving pretty much the same way they did in 2000 and 2004.
Sadly, its possible that McCain’s strategy is the more likely winning one.

Nobody ever talks about the effect that Obama’s windfall profit tax has had on oil futures.
But if I were trading oil futures, and I knew that selling oil was going to become less profitable… I would sell my futures. This would drive down the value for speculators.
And the price of oil would go down.
But Republicans wouldn’t talk about that… because it doesn’t help them politically. And that’s all this is. Politcs.
And their donors want to make as much money as humanly possible selling oil.

“Nobody ever talks about the effect that Obama’s windfall profit tax has had on oil futures.”
Oh sure, they do. A windfall profit tax will do exactly what it did last time: reduce consumption slightly but raise the price of gas significantly for Americans. The rest of the world won’t see that increase. They will continue to consume at the same or increased rates as the costs to Americans reduces competitiveness and they get a competitive advantage.
In a pure commodities market (consumable non-renewables) tax incentives work. Tax disincentives don’t. They are punitive and passed on to the customer.
Remember: these are international companies, not American companies. If we make it harder to sell in America, they sell elsewhere. It is a very different world than the one Carter faced and it didn’t work for Carter all that well.
Speculators will react to the spectres of increased supply and reduced demand. You don’t have to put the whip to the backs of the Americans to achieve that effect.
I predict you will see Detroit turn the hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles out faster than anyone believes. The problem is shelf marketing. They have to get them to market en masse while reducing other inventories and they have to account for the infrastructure. But even with a temporary fall in gas prices, they will go back up and the die is cast for alternatives.
Frankly, this will be fun. America is at her best with her back to the wall. We’ll be fine. We’re smart. We’re industrious. We’re motivated. We’re winners. Go Team!

The ad makes a valid point in showing the mindless emotion that marks so many Obama supporters. The only reason why McCain runs these ads, he knows it brings out the base of the republican party. If you notice some of McCain’s supporters comments, they are quick to call a statement racist or someone a racist. Yet, I wonder many racist experiences they had in their lives. They goal is a simply one is to keep everyone’s mind on race, and that way they chase away Obama’s supporter.

I’m starting to think that if I do not support Obama, that I may indeed be a racist.
Even if I do not agree with his political stances, I am obviously a racist.
Every day, more and more claims of racism. And it just seems to me to be small petty things. Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.
If Obama wins, will every instance of legitimate criticism be met with this racial mud-slinging for the next 4-8 years?
If so… then I’m no longer to be counted among the undecided. I will vote and that vote will be cast for the other guy.

McCain is a disgrace, playing to the deep seated fears of ‘white voters’ in particular white men. MSNBC carried an article today entitled…’Can white voters be trusted to vote for a black candidate?”. Nothing else matters in this election. What will you do? I don’t imagine too many ‘white Americans know of the O’Jays but the produced a popular song in the 70′s with this poetically verse…”they smile in your face while all the time trying to take your place, the backstabbers.”

Nobody is suggesting that not supporting Obama is racist. If you don’t agree with the things that Obama wants to do, then don’t support him. But don’t spread lies about Obama’s religion, birth, ancestry, or personal and expect people not to think that you’re racist

If McCain is falsely portraying Obama as a self-absorbed rock star, Obama probably has every right to portray McCain as a grumpy old man – but how many ads from Obama’s campaign have you seen that try to shape the voters’ image of McCain. Answer: none. Obama is concerned with the issues that he will face as our next President not at painting a false image on his opponent!

“Nobody sees racism, but that is no sign that there is no racism. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? McCain is the biggest flip flopper in the history of politics. On issue after issue, he’s flipped whenever it suits him politically: McCain-Feingold, Offshore Drilling, Immagration, Abortion, Torture, Tax Cuts for the wealthy, Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance,” Bob Jones University, etc. etc. you name it, he’s played whatever side he thinks will work for him. Talk about an empty suit.
Additionally, he cheated on his first wife, divorced her after she waited for him to return from Vietnam (because she had been in an accident and was no longer pretty).

The problem with Obama is that everyone who knows nothing about Chicago politics has no idea what they are voting for. The Chicago Democratic Machine and the state Dem. party have ruined Illinois who now has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country at 7.2%, the highest sales and income taxes in the country and absolutely nothing to show for it. The roads and infrastructure are decaying so badly its disgusting, so much so I moved out of my home state to get away from the sadness.
So go ahead and vote him and the Chicago Cronies in. I dare you all to ruin this country. You have no idea the hell you are about to unleash on this country. You think Bush is a bad apple you don’t know Obama.
Also, What the hell ius with ABC and their political coverage? Of the top5 stories on their page, all are about Obama? My good people, the fix is in, and if you don’t know what they say in Chicago, let me spell it out for you…

I still wish someone would investigate the reason the Chicago Tribune went after the divorce proceedings that got Ryan out of the senate race, and allowed Obama to win a state senate seat that had been controlled by suburban republicans for more than 50 years. It reeks of Chicago Dirty Dem. politics. Yet the story is covered up so good, it looks like Roswell.
