When Candidates Attack: Obama Plays the Reed Card; McCain Responds with Ayers
As part of the Obama campaign’s swing-state-targeted negative TV ad campaign, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, will launch an add in Georgia tomorrow attempting to tie Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to controversial conservative figure Ralph Reed.
The ad can be viewed HERE.
The scrip for the ad, called "Never," says: ”It was one of Washington’s biggest scandals. And the Republican power broker Ralph Reed was in the middle of it. In deep with convicted felon and lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
“But when the Senate investigated, the senator in charge never even called Reed to testify….And that senator? John McCain. And who’s now raising money for McCain’s campaign? Ralph Reed. For 26 years in Washington, John McCain’s played the same old games. We just can’t afford more of the same.”
As chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, McCain chaired the hearings that uncovered how Abramoff and an unsavory pack of GOP cronies had bilked various Native American tribes out of millions. Reed, formerly a leader of the Christian Coalition, at one point had been hired to gin up conservative activists’ opposition to casinos to be run by a tribe considered a competitor by Abramoff’s client tribes. Reed’s role in the sleaze-a-thon helped fell his run for lieutenant governor in 2006.
Reed urged friends and supporters to attend a McCain fundraiser in Georgia this week, though he himself never showed up at the event.
“Barack Obama’s ad is ridiculous," responded McCain spox Brian Rogers. "Because of John McCain, corruption was exposed and people like Jack Abramoff went to jail.
“However, if Barack Obama wants to have a discussion about truly questionable associations, let’s start with his relationship with the unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, at whose home Obama’s political career was reportedly launched. Mr. Ayers was a leader of the Weather Underground, a terrorist group responsible for countless bombings against targets including the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon and numerous police stations, courthouses and banks. In recent years, Mr. Ayers has stated, ‘I don’t regret setting bombs … I feel we didn’t do enough.’"
Rogers the raised the fact that, as the Chicago Tribune reports here, the University of Illinois this week refused to release records related to Obama’s work with Ayers on the education project the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, at the request of an unnamed donor of the materials.
“The question now is, will Barack Obama immediately call on the University of Illinois to release all of the records they are currently withholding to shed further light on Senator Obama’s relationship with this unrepentant terrorist?" Rogers asked.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Oh, for Pete’s sake. Ayers is a professor at the University of Chicago and has been for many years. Obama was one of many people in Chicago who’ve worked on boards with Ayers, who is prominent in the education community in Chicago. What do McCain’s people really think are in these elusive “files” of an education board? Plans to blow up school buildings with the “unrepentant terrorist”?

Ayers is an unrepentant terrorist. Nothing will change that, since those are his beliefs up till this very day. He did say he wished he would have done more damage when he had the opportunity.

John McCain has always associated himself with sleazy, corrupt types. Remember Charles Keating from the Savings and Loan scandals? McCain’s own wife would be a convicted drug felon if she weren’t from a wealthy family and married to a Senator. The McCain campaign is really stupid.

No, Lisa the files will likely show that Obama is friends with and politically associated with the unrepentant bomb-planter. It’s certainly worth knowing and fair game.

Posted by: samhiguchi | August 20, 2008, 6:29 pm 6:29 pm
Paula,
Let’s try to keep the discussion honest here:
1. McCain was cleared of all wrongdoing with respect to the Keating scandal. If you want to provide evidence that he was incorrectly cleared, by all means do so.
2. Cindy McCain became addicted to pain killers, a very common side effect.
3. On the topic of drug addiction, Barack Obama used cocaine and smoked pot without medical reason, or as a side effect of medical treatment. If anyone should be a convicted felon, it’s Obama, according to your logic.

Wow, Sammy. So Obama was “associated” with Ayers. So was the entire Chicago political establishment (didn’t the Mayor appoint him to do some education work?), everyone who ever served with Ayers on an education or charity board, as well as the entire faculty of the University (those who hired him, gave him tenure and worked alongside him). Oh, and all the students who decided to take his classes…
That’s gonna be one might big witch-hunt.

Depends on the degree of association. If Ayers helped launch Obama’s political career (as has been reported) it certainly seem relevant to me. But why not release the archives and settle the matter? What is being covered up or hidden in the archives. Let the information out and let the voters decide if it’s important information or not. Or, are they (the voters) not to be trusted with that information?

Lisa, you don’t seem to get it! The problem is more than William Ayers’ Weather Underground bombings from 40 years ago. William Ayers spouts the same radical anti-America, anti-capitalism dogma from his position as a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. And Chicago Mayor Daley employed him as a teacher trainer for the public schools in Chicago. He indoctrinates the teachers who are in turn expected to influence their students with Ayer’s radical views. These are some of the same views held by many of Sen. Obama’s mentors over the years. The old cliche comes to mind…birds of a feather flock together. Birds like: Frank Marshall Davis; Saul Alinsky; the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.; Father Michael Pfleger; and William Ayers.

Perhaps if he actually had a record to run on he would have done that instead.
But when your campaign of change and a “new kind of politics” is all you have going for you, it’s fair target to hold you up to the standards you set for yourself.
If Obama is running a typical political playbook, why choose him over Hillary Clinton? You guys blew it. You had the election locked up, and now you have a weak candidate who is actually losing to a battle scarred Republican Party.

JA…you might want to check your facts. Cindy McCain was caught stealing drugs from her own charity (and it was not just one time). The people who worked for her turned her in. She got off because she came from a wealthy family and was married to a senator. She cried in public and went to rehab. And what I wrote about McCain was that he associated with sleazy people like Charles Keating who in fact did spend time in jail for fraud. The McCains took many family vacations with the Keatings, had regular dealings with them and considered them close friends. So maybe you should do some better research on your candidate because you obviously don’t know who he really is.

Hey, facts are ugly things -
William Ayers was a founding member of the Weather Underground – The group was a violent anti war organization who’s charter was the overthrow of the United States government. They bombed the Pentagon, the US Capitol and a number of NY City police stations.
William Ayers own girlfriend and 2 other members of the group were killed by a bomb they were building to use against military recruiters at Fort Dix. The group also killed 2 police officers and a security guard during a botched bank robbery-the purpose of which was to gain funds to further their terrorist activities.
William Ayers has never renounced his actions and to this day defends them and laments that the group had not done more. Look it up. It’s disgusting that this man has any sort of position of import in our society – but I guess having a father who is CEO of Commonwealth Edison – Illinois largest utility helps a lot in Chicago.
Obama knew exactly who this man was and yet chose to nurture a personal and professional relationship with him. I’m sorry, but someone aspiring to the Presidency of the US does not do that.

I would really recommend that the Obama campaign supporters reconsider questions of assocation. It will be your downfall.
McCain has questionable ties, like all pols. But the event that stands out is the Keating 5 scandal. He was cleared, but the scar to his reputation remained. Only thing is this was 20 yrs ago.
Obama’s list of questionable ties were RECENT on the other hand, and radical: Rezko’s illegal activity and his land purchase deal involving Obama, Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan, Fleger, and the list goes on.
Does it not strike you as shocking to think that, at times like these, the President of the US would have his political career kicked off by an unrepentant terrorist???

Let’s brush up on McCain and Charlie Keating:
In 1982, during McCain’s first run for the House, Keating held a fund-raiser for him, collecting more than $11,000 from 40 employees of American Continental Corp. McCain would spend more than $550,000 to win the primary and the general election.
In 1983, as McCain contemplated his House re-election, Keating hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner for him, even though McCain had no serious competition. When McCain pushed for the Senate in 1986, Keating was there with more than $50,000.
By 1987, McCain had received about $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.
McCain also had carried a little water for Keating in Washington. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to delay new regulations designed to curb risky investments by thrifts such as Lincoln.

What was Obama when Ayers was involved with his group–7? His association with Ayers has been on a charitable board in Chicago for disadvantaged children. Ayers is an education professor at the University of Chicago. Reed, Abramoff, and the four other members of the Keating Five (McCain being the fifth), on the other hand, were involved in their fine works quite recently. If you want to play the guilt by association game, I’m sure Senator McCain comes out the worse. His campaign is run by lobbyists who show no discrimination for who they will work for, including the most disgusting dictators and governments.

The Keating Five became synonymous for the kind of political influence that money can buy. As the S&L failure deepened, the sheer magnitude of the losses hit the press. Billions of dollars had been squandered. The five senators were linked as the gang who shilled for an S&L bandit.
S&L “trading cards” came out. The Keating Five card showed Charles Keating holding up his hand, with a senator’s head adorning each finger. McCain was on Keating’s pinkie.

Ayers does not teach at the University of Chicago. He teaches at UIC.
But let’s assume both McCain and Obama are guilty. Let me ask you which is worse:
1. Electing someone who was backed by lobbyists
2. Electing someone who was backed by terrorist.
Chew on that. LOL

Meaningless crap and you know it. One poll ending 8/16 has McCain up by 5, another ending 8/17 has Obama up by 5 and the the rest have Obama up by 1 to 3.
At this stage of the game people are so fickle, one can’t gauge what the hell is going on.
I repeat both are below 50% and that is not good for either.

I suspect this is a result of McCain’s great Saddleback showing, and Obama’s mediocre one.

My comments have nothing to do with the Clintons. The simple fact is BO is unworthy of the office to which he aspires – and after being a good Democrat for over 25 yrs I’m ashamed my party has chosen style over substance.
Things like his relationship with William Ayers may mean nothing to you and other true believers but for me and millions of others his choices of friends and associates speaks volumes about the man – How he gained his seat to the Illinois Senate was dishonorable – look it up.
He sat in that church for 20 years and said nothing until he threw his mentor away like a piece of garbage when it was expedient to do so.
What a disgrace Kelly – We Dems deserved better.

Obama’s only hope for this election was a gentlemanly, respectful campaign season where McCain’s person honor would cause McCain to rein in those who would truly highlight Obama’s terrible associations (Wright, Ayers, etc), poor decisions (Surge, taxes, drilling, lack of real policy (energy policy: fill your tires), extremely weak foreign policy (passive placation policy), etc.
PS Lisa, in addition to serving on the 9-member Woods foundation board together, Obama’s first fundraiser was hosted in Ayers house. Obama and Ayers have presented together at several academic events organized by Michelle Obama. When Obama made his first run for political office, articles in both the Chicago Defender and the Hyde Park Herald featured among his qualifications his position as chairman of the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a foundation where Ayers was a founder and guiding force. Obama assumed the Annenberg board chairmanship only months before his first run for office, and almost certainly received the job at the behest of Bill Ayers. During Obama’s time as Annenberg board chairman, Ayers’s own education projects received substantial funding. Obama said Ayers is just “some guy in my neighborhood” which is clearly a lie and a coverup. The university of Chicago complicity in coverup of these documents is reprehensible. SHAME ON THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO.

Taking the high road is the principled thing to do. Obama can defend himslef without climbing into the gutter. All of you haters just wait. Never mind the poll numbers..they only reflect a flawed system of collecting opinions. Those results do not reflect the roughly 15-20 million that do not have land lines and are never polled. That group will have a significant impact on the election. Add to that, another 10 million newly registered first time voters. Just wait until the general election. I predict that Obama will win by at least a 15 point margin.

Are you seriously asking what favors he gets from the company? Ummm, private jet, luxurious lifestyle, all the benefits that come when you are married to the daughter of the owener.
And what does he do for them? There was a report earlier this year about how he used his Senate influence to get land cleared for a building permit for the company. And that’s only the beginning! Take a real look at your candidate, he may not be as honest and “mavericky” as you think he is.

the Ayers years should be released to get it off the agenda…if not…one more question for the public to wonder about.
Obama has to show the nation who he is…warts and all.
McCain for better or worse is known to the American public.
When vying for public support after his association for not one, not two, but 20 years ya better meet the issues straight on and not have these relationships exposed in Mid October.
This is going to be one of the most vicious elections in some time.
Who cares about Cindy Mc Cain’s sister or Obama’s half brother…remember this is not pertinent to the Presidency.
Besides remember you can pick your friends but not your relatives. So let’s hear and examine all the friends these two men have had over the years.

I disagree with your statement: “America knows John McCain.”
Most people DON’T know about the Keaton scandal. Most people don’t know about his questionable ties to lobbyists (throughout his career).
Then there are his stances on the issues. Most people don’t know his stance on abortion AND stem cells (knowing only one or the other). Most Christians don’t know that he called evangelical ministers “evil” during the 2000 campaign.
Right now all that people really know is that he is not Obama. In a way that is all people really care about, because they are scared to vote for Obama. Hopefully, America will open her eyes before she misses a great opportunity to move forward!

The civil forum was supposed to be a conversation not a debate. In case you don’t know the difference. McCain, like his usual ploy, used the event to make stump speeches. McCain is a war hawk and disguises his motives by trying to make jokes about everything. But the joke is on all of his followers that support this two-faced guy. All of you disregard his double life and his past. Bill Clinton was a church choir boy compared to Mc Cain. You may not want to admit it, but this guy is worse than Bush, just pull back the false face.

If you want to talk stumpling, you need look no further than that stump speech that geezer gave at that disgusting Sturgis Biker convention. He was trying to ask the crowd if they were tired of paying high gas prices and stammered all the way throught it. And then he suggested his steppford wife enter their beauty pagent. By the way, does Cindy get to speak or is she not allowed?

It all comes down to whether or not you think we should continue the bush policies. If you think the war should continue indefinitely, while we spend $10,000,000,000 a month, and you think that bush has done well with the economy then mc-more-war is your man. If you think that it’s time we start to get out of iraq and do some positive things for the average American instead of just the top 1% then vote for Obama.

LeeLee07 I understand you are unhappy about Obama but wouldn’t it be better to have a democrat in the white house no matter what. There are so many things that the republicans have done to hurt the american people. We need to get them out of office. the democrat in the race (white or black) will ALWAYS get the black vote. its just that simple. for some reason, black voters have always voted democrats into office. not really sure why seeing that the democrats keep them down in numerous ways, but that will be the case again here for sure. obama will definately get more than the average on that too, for obvious reasons. but yes, bush did trail kerry right up until the GE. history has always shown that voters usually come to their senses and vote more conservative when it becomes crunch time, and this recent turn in the polls (which isnt really a huge issue yet) proves that yet again. listen, im not a very big mccain fan, but i believe thats exactly whats happening again here. and i believe its going to be even more obvious to voters since the democrats offer such an idealistic, unexperienced canidate.

Obama is dropping in the polls not so much that he is weak on national defense, foreign affairs and economy – which he is, but that his plan for increasing the domestic oil supply is practically non existent. Over 70 percent of the American people are demanding an increase in the domestic supply via drilling and opening of more refineries. Windmills, alternative fuels, etc are great for future, BUT WHAT ABOUT NOW??? MISTRUST OF BIG OIL WILL NOT GAIN US A DROP OF NEW OIL. NEITHER WILL KEEPING OUR TIRES FULL (WHICH ALMOST ALL OF US DO ANTWAY). We are going to need at least thirty more years of oil no matter what we can come up with in the way of alternatives. Voters are beginning to recognize that McCain understands this. Obama either does not understand, or he cannot be in favor of increasing the domestic oil supply in fear of offending his base.

Every senator has a story about mccain’s temper tantrums, it’s only a matter of time before he blows a fuse in public. Here are some quotes from his own party:
Former New Hampshire Republican Senator Robert Smith publicly voiced his concerns, once saying McCain’s temper ‘ … would place this country at risk in international affairs, and the world perhaps in danger’.
That sentiment was echoed by Mississippi Republican Senator Thad Cochran, who told a Boston newspaper: ‘The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.’
This country can’t afford another bush term. 01-20-09 “The End of an ERROR”

Obama, like most young adults, did drugs but he freely admitted it.

Obama on the other hand voted against a bill in the Illinois senate that would have protected babies who survive botched abortions. He sat in a room with a nurse and listened while she explained to him that these babies were left to die on a tray.

McCain said he agreed with the woman that they are returning to the “sorry state of affairs”.

3rd comment:
I really thought this would be one of the best elections ever. I have hated politics because of all the smears. I really liked McCain as he said that he would run a civil campaign based on issues. He has not. He lied. He flipflopped. Call it what you will. He says Obama would rather lose the war than an election.(and he says that is not a smear on Obama’s Patriotism?) But he would rather lose his soul than the election. He is not the same candidate that he was during the primaries. When he talks all I hear hims say is Surge, Drill, and negative attacks on Obama. If you elect McCain be prepared for the Draft to be reinstated as we will have 3 fronts to fight on. Can we all say “World War 3″?!!!

Sleazy ad by Obama. If Obama wants to take McCain down he should use humor not personal negative attacks.
Mock McCain on his many flip-flops and how the conservatives view them as “evolutions” rather then what they really are; flip-flops.
Mock him on Iraq. His ever so changing policies on whether or not we’ve won the war or on the verge of winning.
Mock him on drilling, abortion, taxes…
humor humor humor

Obama is such a hypocrite…he talks about the old Washington politics, but look who is coming out with the same old types of ads. Has anyone taken the time to read how he got his start in Chicago? Yep, old Chicago style politics, kept the opposition off of the ballot by challenging petition signatures so he didn’t have to run against anyone…..The final card for me was the Saddleback forum, he did a horrible job answering questions. He just hmmm hawed around as he always does. Why anyone thinks he can negotiate with terrorist governments when he can’t even give a straight answer to a minister and his audience is beyond me. At least with McCain we know what to expect, I really see more and more of Jimmy Carter in Obama every day.

I love Obama. I was at the used car lot last week, looking at this old, beat up car, rusted from the inside out , thinking that if Obama was there as a used car salesman, he would have sold me that car, rotting from the bottom up. Obama is one heck of a showman.
I wouldn’t want him to be President though. That’s the job best fit and handled by McCain or Hillary.

Read it and weep
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama’s solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

Not that it matters to the Obama clan, but the president can’t order a draft anyway, congress has to do it.

point 4
The Saturday forum. If you look at the forum replays Warren tells Obama not stump speechs. I really don’t know what some people were watching. I thought Obama did great considering. he took every question and had a thoughtfull answer. When McCain got on he had a stump answer for every question. And once he even answered the Question before Warren was done asking. (how did he know the whole question?) Anyway, The question about evil. Obama said to confront it. Which is all we can do because we are never going to completely defeat evil in this world. McCain Defeat (love the one word lines) And I will chase what’s his Name (sorry I can’t spell that) to the gates of hell (stump speech again). The Other thing that McCain has said is he knows how to get him(Bin Laden) If he knows, why doesn’t he tell Bush so we can get him now and get it over with. McCain is all talk and saber rattling. The only problem is he will use our young men and women to be the sabers.
Posted by: Iam4thisCountry | August 20, 2008, 10:50 pm 10:50 pm
McCain cheated his way at the forum on Saturday. He was late and was not in a secluded room as Pastor Warren has stated. Obama should have not gone on stage – I would have said – if I don’t see McCain here – I will not go out there. I bet you he will be on time for the debates but he played a game on Saturday night. I know McCain staff quizzed him by preparing him. All McCain talk about was not National Security – he did not talk about faith. My brother said, he knew something was funny- no way a 71 year old man could be up to the task.

Rick. “Name one McCain supporter who is a minority and not an Uncle Tom.” What silliness. This presuposes any minority who believes in the American Dream, who believes he who earneth keepeth, who believes in personal responsibility, who believes in “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” is a traiter to his race. The democrats and most leading minority leaders (hispanic, black) are out there screaming for more hand outs. Why do you not see any asian groups doing the same? Funny isn’t it. No, being black does not mean you must support Barak Obama (even though you might be proud a black man has gotten that far.) Being black should mean you look at the candidate and see what his positions are and what he stands for. There are many blacks and other minorities who look at the picture and shudder.

Manitu: that’s exactly the problem with McCain, he always tells his audience what they want to hear.
A woman at a townhall today asked
QUESTIONER: If we don’t reenact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.

Draft:
How many times has McCain changed his mind since he won the Primary? Don’t feel let down if he is elected president and pushes for the Draft. he will need more troops than what we have to continue the war in Iraq, to go to Afghanistan and to confront Russia. Again. Can we all say “World War 3″!!

Neither of the candidates wants the draft, and as someone else pointed out, congress has to enact the draft, not the president.

This is not the only time McCain has consired a draft.
Last September, McCain said, “I might consider it if you could design a draft where everybody equally could serve.”
With McCain’s penchant to wage war all over the world (Russia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan), a draft would definitely be in order.

Obama’s numbers were plummeting even before his extremely embarrassing appearance at the Saddleback forum. Unless he quickly renounces his past involvement with domestic terrorism his numbers will take an even deeper plunge. The sooner he comes clean on this and stops stonewalling on the requested info, the easier things will be on him. His mistake in holding on to the anti-America Jeremiah Wright for too long should have taught him that lesson.

Point 5:
McCain says that we have the highest corporate taxes in the world. Maybe. But, we have the lowest federal income tax in the Modern world. England, Germany, Japan, Canada; all have higher income taxes than us. What they have is health care for all. They pay for it with their income taxes. Obama is for the Middle class. McCain has never been middle class. The government has paid for all his medical needs since he was born. He has 9 or 10 homes. They have their own Jet and his shoes cost over $500 a pair!!! I can see how in touch with the middle class he is.

Polls mean nothing. They can’t poll people who do not have phones. Most people, like me, only have a cell phone. don’t need a land line. And if you look at the past presidential elections. The candidates were not that far apart in the polls. infact, I forget who, but one won and was -.5% in the polls. Some were only a few points apart. I don’t think I would trust polls. Maybe they worked in past elections but we did not have all the technology that we do now and we did not have 24/7 news. Obama will win, because if he does not, we will be following Bin Laden to the gates of Hell.

– I don’t think McCain will be very happy with his supporters claiming all sorts of ridiculous documents. –
What documents are you speaking of, Willie? I take it you are refereing to those that detail his involvement with domestic terrorists in the Chicago (Ayers & Co.)area?
If you had read the article here instead of just a comment or two, you would see even ABC News admits this is a real problem issue for Obama:
“Rogers the raised the fact that, as the Chicago Tribune reports here, the University of Illinois this week refused to release records related to Obama’s work with Ayers”
If Obama has nothing to fear he should have no problem with being upfront and forthcoming on this. This is not new, the Clinton campaign noted a while back these extremist links of Obama would prove to be of concern to Americans, to say the least. Obama’s downward spiral in the polls show this to be the case.

The only reason people perceive him as not doing well is because he doesn’t give short 5 second talking points that can be replayed endlessly on news channels.

Ayers is a professor of Education. He teaches the people who hope to teach our children. This is a guy whose mantras included catchphrases such as “kill your parents.”
Obama lied during a debate with Clinton when he said that Ayers taught English. Of course Clinton isn’t going to call Obama out on that because Clinton’s got a radical streak herself; both she and Obama studied agitation techniques under Saul Alinsky. Obama is simply more shameless about “rubbing the sores of discontent” as recommended by Alinsky.
Several months ago I had an interesting conversation with an acquaintance of retirement age who was trying to convince me that voting for Obama was in my “own best interest.” When I mentioned Ayers and his unrepentant stance, she exclaimed that she agreed with Ayers and that he and his cronies should have blown up more stuff back in the day.

Oh, Manitu,
You must have been just about the only one impressed with that outrageous line of Obama’s during the Saddleback forum.
There was an absolutely wonderful article in the Boston Herald today that took Obama to task for his answer to the fetus question. The article went on to say that the last thing America needs in the White House is someone sitting beside the red button who feels that the decision whether to push it or not is “above their pay grade.”

“1) Obama has never seen an abortion he didn’t approve of.”
That is a lie and a smear. What do you know, more lying from the McCain supporters. WHODATHUNKIT?
“2)He wants to bankrupt our country through the folly of socialized medicine. Look at Mexico, the only decent hospitals there are private ones.”
Yes, let us look to Mexico for what works and what doesn’t. Maybe we should take up their military directives and arbitrarily have our personnel invade countries with no reason. Oh wait…
“3) He doesn’t want to drill, not even in places we have proven reserves.”
Clearly the solution to replacing a commodity with a finite supply is to make the supply last 3 months longer. That’s long term thinking from the republican party!
“4)His good friends are Ayers and Wright. A terrorist and a racist zenophobe.”
Regrettable associations, but the Ayers association is purely harmless. Show some evidence that they are ‘good friends’ and not merely working associates. And don’t use a rumored and unsubstantiated rumor of a party as evidence).

As a Christian, it is not up to Obama to decide when life begins. McCain’s response showed no thought, and only pandered to low-information voters. It is sad that the evangelicals will end up voting for McCain (who no doubt is not actually a practicing Christian) rather than one of their own.

Guilt by association again. I don’t care. There are much bigger issues.
McCain would be a dangerous President who would try to spread democracy through the use force and reenact the draft so your sons and daughters can’t say no.
And in the Independent today, we hear of McCain’s secret plan to kill the U.N.: “Charles Krauthammer, the conservative journalist who invented the plan, says: “What I like about it is, it’s got a hidden agenda. It looks as if it’s about listening and joining with allies… except the idea here, which McCain can’t say but I can, is to essentially kill the UN. Nobody’s going to walk out of the UN. There’s a lot of emotional attachment to it in the US. How do you kill it? You create a parallel institution.” Gradually – over decades – McCain hopes it would make the UN wither away.”

Right!
That’s why Hillary had such a heck of a time keeping a straight face while patiently waiting for Obama’s words to trickle from his brain to his tongue so that they could literally come tripping off his tongue.

Obama is in a box. Every time he questions anything about McCain, all McCain’s camp has to do is pick up one of the Obama books on the bestseller’s list, and throw one of his many, many, many past indiscretions, associations and mistakes back at him. The only problem is picking what piece of dirt to throw.
Obama is toast! Bye. Bye.

anon,
Obama’s response only showed more of his indecisiveness when faced with a difficult question.
His position on abortion is well-known, as he has never failed to spout off about his views on the subject in the past, and I’m sure he has unhesitatingly provided his own answer to that same question when speaking to a more liberal audience.
So please don’t put him on a pedestal because he back-pedaled out of an uncomfortable question with one of his typical, slick, indecisive answers.
He knows exactly where he stands on conception, and when he believes a human life begins (or I would sincerely hope that he knows what his beliefs are,it’s scary to think that he would be voting the way he does on the partial birth abortion issues WITHOUT doing so based on his own beliefs), and he should just speak up and say so like McCain did.

The right wingers cant stand that McCain’s coverup of the Reed/Abramof/Riley scandal is coming out into the daylight.
The reason they cant stand it is that is shows how the right wing has played its religious allies for dupes, using them as a means of obtaining money and nothing more.
That “religious” leaders allow this thing to happen casts a terrible light on organized religion.
There are only two kinds of Republican – millionaires and suckers.

Mr. Obama’s closest friends/associates hate the United States of America. His pastor, and his terrorist buddy, and his wife. They all hate the country, and so does he. Let’s see the documentation of their working relationship. If anything, it will show much much Obama lied about their involvement.

Dear Karen, know the phrase Glass Houses and Throwing Stones??
Apparently you haven’t read the article. The article lays it out in very clear terms: Obama is not the one ‘stonewalling’ the documents; the Univerity is not ‘stonewalling’ the documents; the University is “aggressively pursuing” an agreement with the donor of the documents.
But if you think it will work for you to act like spoiled little children having temper tantrums every time they want candy. Be my guest.
This is what the article says
” The university’s Chicago campus maintains that the donor of the records that document the work of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge has not handed over ownership rights. The university says it is “aggressively pursuing” an agreement with the donor, and as soon as an agreement is reached, the collection will be made accessible to the public. The university has not identified the donor.
The Obama campaign says the senator does not have control over these records or the ability to release them, adding that it has made many documents related to Obama’s life available to the public and that “we are pleased the university is pursuing an agreement that would make these records publicly available.”

Right now we’re beginning to experience the Repub. smear blitz they always turn on the Dem nominee. They’re cranking out so called “exposes” about Obama and dragging him through the mud in every which way. They want to make this election a referendum on Obama because their policies are so bankrupt and have done so much destruction to the country. They know it’s the only way they can win. McCain has called in all of the dirtiest, slimiest GOP scum. They will stop at nothing to win. We can’t let them succeed this time — the stakes for our country are too high!!

So? Anybody got an answer why McCain never called on Ralph Reed to testify?
Posted by: Willem van Oranje | August 21, 2008, 12:48 am 12:48 am
I noticed an analogy of the puppy who piddled and was still loved–we don’t have time to house break a president. Some one suggest McCain’s quick answers show no thought, not true, it shows he does not have to go through a list of who will be offended if he states his real position.
Posted by: 1post3 | August 21, 2008, 12:48 am 12:48 am
The Reed/Abramoff association is absolutely relevant to John McCain’s candidacy: John McCain was Chairman of the Committee that was directly responsible for investigating ethics charges. McCain exercised his authority – his judgment – and decided an investigation was not necessary. We now know that there were indeed serious violations that could have been – should have been – would have been exposed earlier if John McCain had been truly independent of the K Street Republican Mob that controlled Congress (as I recall, John McCain had nothing to do with uncovering Abramoff scandal).
In sharp contrast, Bill Ayers’ anti-Vietnam War activities took place in the late 1960s, when Obama was a child. The fact that nearly 40 years later, the two men served their community by tackling Chicago’s public education crisis through their work on a highly-acclaimed, prestigious nonprofit Board is actually an association that both men should be rightfully proud of.
Deep down, I highly doubt that McCain could say the same about his associations with Abramoff & Reed.

“we are pleased the university is pursuing an agreement that would make these records publicly available.”
You are likely much too young to recall the Watergate era, Willie. It was from that we get the maxim of how it’s “the cover-up that gets you”. Who is the refered-to secret person/organization behind the refusal to make the Obama-Ayers relationship public? What excuse can be offered if it there actually were nothing to hide?
Certainly Obama has no interest in divulging the secrets, but I suspect his diverionary tactics on this will be as successful as was Nixon’s on the Watergate tapes. Had Nixon addressed that fully at the start and acknowleged “mistakes had been made” many people thought the fallout would have been lighter. It’s the same in this scandal; Obama can evade, avoid and try to hide behind shadowy anonymous figures, but it just increases the consequences in the end.
Investigative reporters are checking this out. They were originally promised full access to the Obama-Ayers-Weatherman papers, only to run up against a stonewall of misc excuses and quick backtracking by both Obama’s public and hidden protectors. You are, of course, more than welcome to think that’s a good thing. We’ll see if Americans agree with you.

Barack Obama for president!
He is the true leader and he will put the people first, not special interest groups! He is a man of character and intellect, unlike John McCain who cheated on his first wife, left her and the kids, and married a woman 20 years younger than him, he makes me sick! We need change in Washington and John McCain is more of the same!

“And what a phoney story Obama tells aboout their friendship being tied to their children going to school together”
The “he’s just some stranger from down the street” story of Obama’s surely doesn’t explain why the two were conducting their secret meetings, does it?
“That would have been rather difficult unless the Ayers children (who were about twenty years older) were seriously disfunctional.”
We are talking about people who support bombing Americans here so I don’t think you could ever truly -underestimate- their IQs. Though they can recite ‘uhhh…uhhh…Hope…uh…Change…uh…” well enough, so give them credit for that.

This ad isn’t Obama “attacking”.
An attack ad is one where your opponent say’s things like, “your wife is ugly!”, “you’re unpatriotic!”, “you’re a vapid bimbo!”, or some such nonsense.
In politics it is not an “attack” to question your opponents record or public past.
McCain has run dishonest, baseless, frivolous, and downright silly attack ads. Obama hasn’t.

UMMM lets see that was really the I’m a differant kind of politican(yes Obama) who started the whos who of nasty charectors hiding in the closet attack. Must be Obamas forgotten his long list of shady charectors,Wright,Rezko, and I’m proud I bombed Americans Ayers. This one term Senator with no experience and no concept of foriegn policy dufus is amazing. I want a clean campaign,I’ll take public financing oops geez I’m getting more money from donations I can always say I never promised.Obama promises and his campaign platforms will be as easily forgotten as those two promises were.

What contrasting bios on these two on CNN tonight. McCain’s was full of friends, service, personal failure (his divorce), successes, family…it was just so full…..AND THEN THERE WAS OBAMA’S. I actually felt sad for him with the dead beat parents he had. Both abandoned him, dad at 2 and mom when she sent him back from Indonesia to live with granny while she stayed with hubby #2 in Indonesia. I have to say, he had to do alot on his own and I commend him for that. I still would never vote for him (although I’m pro choice too) and I like that he doesn’t seem to get ruffled much….but I still could never vote for him.
McCAIN ALL THE WAY!

I think this is tricky for both camps in a way. I am more persuaded that McCain has done wrong, by not investigating Reed further (Why? Because he wanted to curry favor with right wingers in the GOP? Or at least not upset them?) But at the same time McCain’s attack could play into the narrative very well, so Obama has to be careful with the Reed card.

Why would they want to keep the records a secret?

Obama is showing just how incompetent he is by trying to paint McCain by his associations. Does he really want to open a can of worms that will come back at him as a bucket of snakes? Apparently he does. Well the gloves are off. McCain previously criticized ads that invoked Rev. Wright; now he has every right – and every obligation – to hit Obama with every past nefarious association in his portfolio.

Lisa, from Obama Chief Strategist David Axelrod: “Bill Ayers lives in his neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school … They’re certainly friendly, they know each other, as anyone whose kids go to school together.”
Oh wait; I get it! Since Axelrod said it, Obama is scot free – just like when he says he didn’t know anything about that survey in the IL State Senate that had his handwritten notations on it. Got it.
A new kind of politics where staffers do all the work so they can take all the blame. And any heavy lifting is above Obama’s paygrade.
Posted by: marylou | August 21, 2008, 7:59 am 7:59 am
It’s honestly good that McCain is bringing up Ayers this early. That way all can be aired and the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with their association can be aired. And then Obama can move on to winning the election.

I am all for all documents coming to light. Hillary’s stuff, McCain’s Military records, Bush’s Air National Guard records and Obama’s education committee records. Pleas look at the relationships of these and what they really mean. Obama was a child in the 1960s as was I. Does anyone think that Obama chose to have Ayres sit on the same committee with him? It association by living your life. Give it up or put everything on the table.

Obama and Ayers go back to Columbia U. Ayers father got Obama a summer job at a law firm, chose him as Chairman of the Board of the Annenburg Challenge (which Bill Ayers ran) whose purpose was to “revolutionize” public education, and Obama and Ayers sat on the Woods Fund together where they chose the recipients of the Funds grants. Why won’t the media look into all of this so we can decide for ourselves whether or not any of it is relevant?
Posted by: marylou | August 21, 2008, 9:48 am 9:48 am
Yes
Yes
Yes, Mary Lou!
Daley is naturally blocking access to the documents.
It would be a good idea for the public to see just intertwined Obama and Ayers are.
Posted by: drjohn | August 21, 2008, 9:52 am 9:52 am
Obama is truly getting desperate if he wants to bring up Mac’s associates.
Let’s see those ads of Wright cursing America, Ayers stomping the flag, Pfleger calling America a sin, Rezko being carted off to jail. Snippets of Obama’s book where he praises his communist mentor–Frank Davis.
Is Obama stupid and desperate enough to go there?
Posted by: riley | August 21, 2008, 9:57 am 9:57 am
Uh Uh, ee, ee, you know, but, but,
Let me be very clear.
We know John McCain and his past. He isn’t trying to hide anything.
Unlike Obama who offers lame excuses whenever he is confronted. How can you trust a candidate who calls a pro-life group liars just to hide his extremely radical abortion record.
He supported infanticide then tried to cover it up. What a thoughtful politician.

Let me get this straight Obama is attacking McCain for uncovering supposed corruption that also included Democrats like Reid and so forth. It is like attacking a Police Officer who arrests a criminal!
Obama has betrayed the people of this country by wanting to increase our Government.
I also hope the College that Obama and his main Advisor friend Ayers worked at loses Federal funding for not supplying public information!!
Obama and the other socialists have caused the death of 10s of millions of people!!

Another good ad by the obama camp.
Obama hits back with facts – mccain reacts like this is a junior high class presidential election. The electorate will soon grow tired of the mccain camp insulting their intelligence.

so lemme get this straight, McCain has a known corrupt lobbyist working for him and he wants to throw rocks about a tagential relationship to a guy who didn’t kill anybody and seerved his time for his crimes. yeah, that’s the same. He doesn’t address the charge, he just tries to hit back with a limp noodle.

By the way Obama, Who is Mike Klonsky? Oh yeah, not only a friend of Ayers and a recipient of some of the Annenberg Challenge monies; Klonsky was a hardline maoists in the SDS in the late 60’s, later forming a pro-Chinese sect called the October League that morphed into the Beijing-recognized Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist) and who is now a member of the Obama campaign. The more we find out, the uglier it gets. And Obama wants to bring up Reed??
