Who’s in the Good Seats Around the Stage?
Sitting here, stage right, third row, I see Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama; Sen. Joe and Jill Biden; Senate Majority Leader Harry and Landra Reid; House Speaker Nancy and Paul Pelosi; Craig Robinson (Michelle’s brother) and wife. There are other family members here, too.
But most of the folks down here are not of the well-connected. They’re grass roots volunteers, first-time delegates, and the disabled.

“The federal government pays salaries of teachers”
The federal government doles out block grants to states that are then distributed to various local school boards.
These funds help provide among other things teacher pay.

Obama, all talk and no cattle.
The Dems have really blown 2008 by foolishly and undemocratically nominating Barack Obama who is unqualified and unelectable.
Hillary Clinton should be the nominee. Hillary could win this election in a walk.
Damn the Dems. Hold them accountable for this 2008 undemocratic campaign debacle.
Vote McCain 08 and Hillary 2012.

Awesome speech.
“It’s not because John McCain doesn’t care. It’s because John McCain
doesn’t get it.”
“For over two decades, he’s subscribed to that old, discredited Republican philosophy – give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else. In Washington, they call this the Ownership Society, but what it really means is – you’re on your own. Out of work? Tough luck. No health care? The market will fix it. Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps – even if you don’t have boots. You’re on your own.”
“Well it’s time for them to own their failure. It’s time for us to change America.”

The abilitiy to stand all alone on a movie set that was tailored especially for you, and badmouth John McCain from a teleprompter, does not mean you will be able to pull it off when you’re standing on a stage one on one with the man with no prepared words in front of you.

As a democrat who will vote for McCain, largely because I believe the Presidency is for people who have been public servants over the long haul, here are some observations:
1. The set and fireworks were not needed, but only a little overblown.
2. How come Michelle Obama got stuck having to tell all the lies of this conventions?
a. she and her husband could have had high powered jobs in law firms – well who wants to work 80 hour weeks for a law firm when you can make $300,000 working for a hosptial and on the board of a company that is a wal moart supplier, after a job with the City of Chicago, that you accepted only after your husband talked to the hiring manager, and he can write an autobiography that makes millions instead?
b. She said tonite in the film that she and her husband never talked about him running for various high offices – only serving the American People. Well it is a matter of public record that he entered the USSenate with a 2008- 2012 – 2016 plan for the offices he would run for – with the Presidency at 2016 at the latest. I am sorry Barack did not share this with Michelle, but his campaign shared his plan with the Chicago papers.
c. Barack told us about all of the things his parents and grandparents did for him, but still can not fill out exactly what he did in the US Senate where he really did not show up. AS an earlier poster said, I am from Chicago, and I am well aware of what he did instead of contributing as an elected official. Today, his campaign sent an email out to his supporters asking them to call and email a very prominent Chicago radio station, demanding that they not allow someone doing research on Barack Obama and Bill Ayer and the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. In this case, Barack Obama is not for transparency and freedom of the press. The station is saying the pushback is unprecedented.
d. Yes, John McCain has not always taken positions that are popular with republicans. Barack Obama has taken positions that are party line democratic positions virtually 100% of the time – especially in the Illinois state Senate.
e. Yes John McCain has been in the Senate for 26 years and Joe Biden has been thee 35 years – and this is largely Joe’s only job. John McCain alone among the candidates so far announced, is the only one that understands all the risks of war.
f. Two of things that Barack mentioned in his speech – immigration policy breaking up families and gun control legislation that at least includes a ban against assault rifles – John McCain agrees with.
g. Now, exactly why did the campaign say Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen appearing and charged significant $$$ for seats, yet they did not appear? Maybe most people were there for the historic nature of the occasion, but a few were excited also about the entertainement.
h. As a non practicing Cahtolic, I was pretty dumbfounded by Nancy Pelosi’s Meet the Press interview about the Catholic Church’s position on the beginning of life. Pretty hard to believe that they want Catholic votes with when one of their most prominent Catholic leaders doesn’t properly represent the Chrurch’s teachings.
Other than that, a great speech – people will have to decide if a void of public service can be replaced by this speech. You should go to WGN radio(the home of the Chicago Cubs), Extension 720 from last nite and hear the full two hour interview on Barack Obama’s work on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge and the efforts of the Obama campaign to hide his work from 1995 to 2000 and beyond.

I know a lot of people with money, and they will use every loop hole they can to get a better deal. They get better deals that poor people because they know the ropes and they know the right people. This doesn’t make them horrible people. It makes them cheap and looking to pay less. Big businesses and corporations do it every day. They wheel and deal. It isn’t fair but it is what it is, and it will never stop.

How can anyone include affirmative action in their accomplishments when affirmative action is done with in the system without the recipient even knowing. Women benifit from affirmative action also not just blacks. There are so many positions women are in and doing a great job because of affirmative action. When she gets the promotion or the job, she isn’t told that it’s only because of affirmative action.

He is a fraud, fake, flake and a liar. Nothing has changed about the corrupt candidate.
Change also includes 9/11 and Katrina. Obama as president well be that sort of change. Do yoU want that?????.

He’s not trying to stop it on that level because it’s impossible. My dad plays golf and on the golf course all kinds of deals go down to help each other out. That kind of wheeling and dealing like getting a good deal on land or a house is small.

Jack,
All I’m saying is the more people you have packed into one place at any given time, the more diversity there is going to be among them.
As far as I know, the Republicans aren’t planning on any mega-productions in any venues like a pro football stadium for any of their convention events, so the likelihood of having as much diversity at their events would not be as high.

It’s not taking the land away from anyone else. It’s just a piece of property that’s expensive but if you know this person who can give you a deal you wouldn’t jump on it?

I was thinking the exact same thing (that his VP pick Biden had been there 30+ years) when Obama made that remark about how long John McCain has been in the Senate.
You’d think he’d be a little more reluctant to point out the disparity in experience between himself and his opponent, rather than drawing such attention to it………….

No one, not a woman or any minority who has accomplished anything in life did not work hard to accomplished that achievment, even if affirmative action was the stepping stone for them to get their foot in the door. They still had to work and sometime work just that much harder to prove that they are worthy of the position. They don’t have to shout to the top of the mountains that they are a product of affirmative action. What ever they accomplished speaks for them.

A great scholastic mind, brought on by his mother waking him up at 4:00 in the morning to read a book, afforded Obama a scholarship to college. And although Affirmative Action really benefits white women mostly, thank goodness it was in place. Otherwise, you would have people like Governor George Wallace of Alabama who stood in the door to block the admission of two black youngsters to the University of Alabama; who, in his 1970 campaign ran ads saying, “Unless whites vote on June 2, blacks will control the state”.
But even George Wallace redeemed himself in his last days.

“Biden has been there longer”
Biden has a long list on his Senate-record that is stellar, and only two that are horrible: voting for the war, and voting for the credit card industry.
McCain has made a few decisions in the past that are stellar or at least okay. But since his embrace of the rightwing fringe, his record is truely horrible.
Posted by: Willem van Oranje | August 29, 2008, 1:00 am 1:00 am
Talking about Pelosi occupying a prime seat, one would have seen how much displeasure was written all over her face, and how disappointed she was, when President Clinton was getting the extended standing ovation yesterday and made his incredible speech. And when Sen Obama came to join Joe Biden on stage, she was the first to rush to the edge of the box and tug Sen Obama in adoration for an unbelievably long period of time, as if her own son has become the nominee. The bias was clearly visible. It also points to the allegations how she was one of the architects, along with the likes of Dona Brazile, to influence the Rules and Bylaws committee, to reward Sen Obama with the votes from Michigan and Florida. She should be the one who should be shown the door when she faces the next election.

I took note of Senator Biden’s mom who is 90 or so on stage yesterday at his acceptance speech.

I don’t believe Obama’s granny is that sick….she was given a gag order long ago, or maybe she’s not really speaking with her grandson, like mom, Ann. Two years BO and mom weren’t talking before she died of ovarian cancer, alone in a hospital.
Thank God, McCain’s 96 year old mother is sharp, healthy and beautiful….and able to tell us about the character of her son.
Isn’t it wierd BO has no one but his wife and Michelle to speak on his behalf….friends? colleagues?
Joe, Hill and Bill have known him for 2 minutes….where are the long term associations? Oh, that’s right….Ayers, Wright and Rezko are not good character witnesses!

I think McCain should start off his convention with just getting out among the people, no prompters, no stiff speeches and say he’s going to take it down a bit and get serious…this isn’t show biz.

I just listened to Senator Obama’s speech the second time (rerun on TV) and I certainly came away angry from some of his lies, distortions and bogus promises. He is not a new politician with fresh ideas but the same old political rhetric and pandering. It sounded just like a speech a true socialist would make when trying to hide his agenda. And no, I will never vote for a man that thinks government should be a DO ALL for its citizens. The price is too high and too extreme. This whole thing was a spectacular event for his benefit–to make himself a super star, rock star but a perfect fool. He offers nothing for me, my family, friends, neighbors that I believe he will and can deliver.

Conventions NEVER determine the outcome of an election, or a speech. IT WILL BE THE MEASLEY 3 DEBATES OBAMA AGREED TO (since he’s afraid of McCain and town halls/debates). That will determine our 44th president.

Obama offered a laundry list of government spending. McCain group can just go one by one to dispel them, and then ask a question, Can Obama deliver? look at his affordable housing policies in Chicago. The results: 39 defunct housing projects, 11 in his own district.
McCain can run this in a new ad — what has Obama accomplished? his housing policy, his education reform (40million spending with no impacts), his urban garden project (10 million spending with not a single garden built). There are too many holes in Obama’s record, one good speech will not fill them.

As long as McCain can help people see the difference between a “SPEECH” and real “ACTION”, then Obama’s lofty words mean nothing, and the feel-good moment will fade soon.

Exactly, Amy. McCain got alot of material to counter attack from that speech tonight. My first one would be, “This is the second time Sen. Obama you have said you’d debate me anytime, anywhere, and I said let’s do 10 town halls at the beginning of summer. You backed off then, but let’s set a date for next week…name the place”.
Plenty of other points McCain can jump on too.
Posted by: Debra | August 29, 2008, 3:04 am 3:04 am
I agree Amy.
McCain just needs to show he is a man of action for the middle class.
Just one problem.
He’s spent decades in Congress and hasn’t done squat for the middle class.
Maybe he can explain why Obama’s tax plan gives the middle class more money than his.
That would be fun.
Posted by: Ryan C | August 29, 2008, 3:06 am 3:06 am
If only democrats can think logically. Obama people can not define McCain as Bush. It is a rare opportunity to nullify the entire Democratic line of attack and McCain should seize on it
“The truth is, of course, that McCain is the most unlike Bush of any of the Republican senators. (When Obama’s people claim that Bush and McCain voted the same 94 percent of the time, they forget that most of the votes in the Senate are unanimous.) The fact that McCain backs commending a basketball team on its victory doesn’t mean that he is in lockstep ideologically with the president.
The issues on which McCain and Bush differ are legion:
• McCain fought for campaign finance reform — McCain-Feingold — that Bush fought and ultimately signed because he had no choice.
• McCain led the battle to restrict interrogation techniques of terror suspects and to ban torture.
• McCain went with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) on a tough measure to curb climate change, something Bush denies is going on.
• McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts when they passed.
• McCain urged the Iraq surge, a posture Bush rejected for years before conceding its wisdom.
• McCain favors FDA regulation of tobacco and sponsored legislation to that effect, a position all but a handful of Republican Senators oppose.
• McCain’s energy bill, also with Lieberman, is a virtual blueprint for energy independence and development of alternate sources.
• After the Enron scandal, McCain introduced sweeping reforms in corporate governance and legislation to guarantee pensions and prohibit golden parachutes for executives. Bush opposed McCain’s changes and the watered-down Sarbanes-Oxley bill eventuated.
• McCain has been harshly critical of congressional overspending, particularly of budgetary earmarks, a position Bush only lately adopted (after the Democrats took over Congress).
Posted by: amy | August 29, 2008, 3:10 am 3:10 am
“I voted with Bush 90% of the time” – John McCain.
John McCain voted with the Republican party 88% of the time this Congress.
McCain’s problem is that political parties rarely nominate mavericks, and McCain has decided the only way he’ll ever be president is as the Republican nominee. So today he cares very much about what hurts him or helps him in his own party.
The most flagrant sign of this was his February vote to continue Bush’s dividend and capital gains tax cuts, which he once eloquently opposed. “It’s a big flip-flop,” one-time McCain foe Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, told The Washington Times’ Donald Lambro, “but I’m happy that he’s flopped.”
Posted by: Ryan C | August 29, 2008, 3:14 am 3:14 am
So Amy you offer that McCain fought against the Bush tax cuts as an example of his being anti-Bush(at the time he called them irresponsible) when MCain is campaigning on making those tax cuts permanent.

Compared with Obama’s flip-flops, McCain’s is minial. Anyway, can you offer some real meat showing that Obama can stand against his own party? He has said so much about his willingness to cross lines. I hope it is not the ethic reform, I have heard so much about it.

“Ryan, Biden has spent more time in Congress than McCain and your guy is thinking HE’S change you can believe in?”

“It’s called cynicism…”
Which Willem is a philosophy that questions the presentation, or is an “unpleasant way of telling the truth”. Classically it is “advocating the pursuit of virtue in a simple and unmaterialistic lifestyle” and criticised greed.
The Haight-Ashbury district of the 1960s was full of Cynics. You probably called them “hippies”. Now it’s full of investors in upscale real estate development that helps finance the candidacies of men who take favors from crooks and use pork barrel legislation to filter money to the employer of their wife and then into their own pockets. In the 1960s, before the era of greed, these same investors were called “hippies”.
Call that… Cynical.
