Biden Again Mistakes Brigades for Battalions
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., likes to joke that Republicans don’t attack him on foreign policy issues because he’s "this big expert," but Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., presidential campaign believes they have found a chink in the Biden armor.
For the third time in a week, Biden, speaking Wednesday at Harborside Event Center in Ft. Myers, Fla., mixed up battalions and brigades.
"Over a year ago," Biden said of his running mate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., "He said we need two more combat battalions in Afghanistan."
In fact, Obama called for two more brigades.
Moments before mixing up battalions and brigades, Biden, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, had said that when it comes to national security and foreign policy, "I do think I know as much as anyone in government about those things."
The six-term senator also made the same mistake while addressing his party last Wednesday at their convention in Denver, and then again in a speech Saturday in Dublin, Ohio. And Republicans, of course, have noticed.
"Joe Biden, whose celebrated foreign policy expertise sealed his selection as Barack Obama’s mentor and running mate, once again confused the difference between battalions and brigades when discussing Barack Obama’s plans for Afghanistan," said McCain spokesman Ben Porritt. "While Americans are already apprehensive about the lack of experience of Barack Obama, the misunderstanding of basic military terms by Joe Biden presents added uncertainty to a ticket that clearly lacks judgment."
The Biden campaign, however, let it be known that it would not back down from a foreign policy fight.
"Does the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld Republican Party really want to debate who is better versed in foreign policy and national security?" said Biden spokesman David Wade. "Did we really get this lucky? If we wanted to stoop to the level of the McCain campaign, we’d point out that John McCain can’t get straight the difference between Sunni and Shia, and seems to think Czechoslovakia is still a country. But this is much bigger than words. It’s about judgment. On every big foreign policy question from Iraq to Iran and Afghanistan, John McCain has been dead wrong, and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are right. Let’s have that debate."

Laura McGann brought word from Alaska yesterday that Palin had, in her own words, pooh-poohed her own executive experience, mocking it as “not rocket science.” Strangely, for all the “not rocket science” nature of the work, Palin was unique among Wasilla mayors in that she still needed help. As ProgressiveAlaska notes: “…when Palin was first elected mayor…in 1996, she had to hire a city manager. When her predecessors had occupied the office, they did that job themselves. There went $60,000 per year.” (Much more on that via Andrew Sullivan.)
The whole attempt at contrasting Palin as someone who stands up to “oil producers” is similarly baffling, considering that McCain’s been broadly signaling that his presidency will be a drill-crazy bonanza for the oil industry.

Republicans have touting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s service as “commander in chief” of the state’s National Guard as proof of her foreign policy chops. Democrats and other observers countered that while a governor can command the Guard in local emergencies, he or she has no say at all when it comes to foreign deployments.
As it turns out — according to both conservatives and liberals — U.S. governors were stripped of crucial discretion over their National Guard units at home for a good part of Palin’s first term.
A clause from National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 amended the Insurrection Act, handing President George W. Bush expanded power to declare martial law and take over Guard troops without a governor’s assent. Passed by the Congress and signed by the president more than a month before Palin took office in December 2006, critics on both sides of the aisle deemed it a federal power grab.
“Governors’ control of the National Guard can be trumped with a simple presidential declaration,” the American Conservative wrote.

It was the McCain campaign that announced Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy. That alone might be understandable since it appears a supermarket tabloid was about to print the story. But it was the McCain campaign, entirely on its own, that dished up unsubstantiated claims about maternity tests and all sorts of other lurid nonsense that had never been seen in print anywhere. And now the McCain campaign has staged a ceremonial laying-on-of-hands on the tarmac in St. Paul in which Sen. McCain has given his official blessing to the young couple and embrace of Bristol’s boyfriend Levi.

Meg Whitman, McCain’s national campaign co-chair and former CEO of e-Bay, veered off message today in an interview with Fox News, describing the media vetting of Palin as “completely fair” and saying that there hasn’t really been any sexism to speak of in the coverage.

Gaffe’s who cares…I am much more concerned about this, which is important and still not getting reported..and you call the media bias towards Obama!
Three months before she was thrust into the national political spotlight, Gov. Sarah Palin was asked to handle a much smaller task: addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God.
Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain’s running mate.
Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.
OR THIS!!!!
The founder of the Alaska Independence Party — a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years — once professed his “hatred for the American government” and cursed the American flag as a “damn flag.”
The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991.

oh nooooo!!!! say it isn’t so. Now read through and compare kaine to Palin. Rove is eating baked crow tonight at the convention.
————–
Rove singled out Virginia governor Tim Kaine, also a Face The Nation guest, as an example of such a pick.
“With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished,” Rove said. “I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America.”
Rove continued: “So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I’m really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States.”
Yes, the real problem with Tim Kaine is that he’s only been governor of a large state for three years, and before that, he was only the mayor of a mid-size city. This, of course, made him “undistinguished,” unprepared for national office, and the very idea of putting him on a national ticket was practically ridiculous.
Thanks, Karl.

It’s amazing how the right is getting so ‘touchy” about Sarah Palin, who, as of 5 days ago couldn’t pick her out of a lineup. McCain use to be smart, he used the press to his advantage understanding the value they have for you when you are honest and respectful to them. Then along comes Steve Schmidt to manage his campaign; yes, that Steve Schmidt, the one from “W’s” campaign. And McCains base, as her refered to the press, are gone. When you spend 48 hours jerking the press around sending them on wild goose chases waisting their time and resources just to “spring” a suprise on the nation to temper your opponents success of the previous 4 days, the press might get a bit irrated. And maybe, just maybe, they might INVESTIGATE a totally inept choice for VP of the United States that no one outside of one of the least populated states in the country know. And did he really think, know one would want to know her history, we would just take the “Republicans” word for it?
This wasn’t a maverick choice; Leiberman was the maverick choice. But the evangelical right wing would have NOTHING to do with a pro-choice candidate on the ticket. So, ole Mav, gave in to party politics. That’s the change he’s bring to Washington? Where have I heard this story before…..George???

Why has not one person mentioned that Joe Biden, the vice-presidential nominee selected by Senator Obama, is the very one who said that infamous line:

At least Biden doesnt think Iraq and Afghanistan share a border like mccain thinks they do
Posted by: angie | September 3, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm
Perhaps Biden was attempting to clarify what Obama meant to say. After all, there is a huge difference between two battalions and two brigades. With two battalions, you get anywhere from 600 – 2000 soldiers. With two brigades, the number ranges from 6,000 to 10,000. Unless Obama specified how many more troops we should send to Afghanistan, there’s no way of knowing whether Biden made a mistake or Obama did.
Joe Biden has a LOT more experience in foreign policy than most people in government. I’d like to know if MAtthew Jaffe would like to debate Senator Biden on either foreign policy OR national security.
By the way, Mr. Jaffe, if this is the worst ‘gaffe’ you could find by Biden, you have nothing! Now, how about finding something of SUBSTANCE to report on.

“Brigade” and “battalion” are ambiguous terms. Neither equates to a number of troops. A brigade is made up of 2 or more batalions and a brigade is made up of three or more sub-units, depending on what type or forces.
Saying 2 battalions or saying 2 brigades has not said how many troops. Neither statement is meaningful other than more.

The Republicans are grasping for straws to take the focus off their inability to use sound judgment on Palin. They haven’t even had to defend her lawsuit against the US Government for protecting the polar bears. She of course, is using to fight this argument, data provided her by none other than….can you guess…..OIL COMPANIES! She believes they are not endangered, even though the state of Alaska and the federal governments independent findings conclude they are. It gets in the way of her “standing up to big oil”….laughable. Did I mention her speech at her church yet to those young graduates? Of how about the radio show she appeared on where she is heard laughing when a state representitive who is a recovering cancer patient but a woman who opposes Ms Palin, is called a “cancer and a bitch”. Not once does she laugh, but twice. And then a third time when a deragatory remark is made about the womans weight. Never once, trying to push herself away from this juvenile behaivor. I am sure this will go over well with the Hillary voters she thinks she’s going to pull over. Women that I know just love the term “bitch”. Sarah, the only thing those 18 million voters liked about Hillary Clinton was her reproductive organs?
Yea, if this was my VP choice, I’d be picking on Biden for his haircut soon!

Radical…. such a tired GOP word.
He’s what’s radical … picking a vp who…
is Not ready for president on day one
son off to iraq
daughter pregnant
son with special needs
under investigation
making bush-esque statements about God calling us to war
and before you start you lame comparisons to obama
remember
18 million voters chose obama
1 senile geezer chose palin

Who cares. We are giving Georgia 1 billion dollars in foreign aid. Ron Paul save us.

GreggW; You really should do a little research before making such statements. While the terms battalion and brigade do not refer to specific numbers, they do refer to different organizational levels of Army units. A brigade is typically a much larger force than a battalion.
BTW, bushels and pecks are units of volume of dry goods. There are four pecks to a bushel. There is nothing ambiguous about them :-).

Well said Omentum!
I love how all the Republican talking points include “Governor Palin has more executive experience than Obama”, but they forget to mention 18 million people believe he is capable of running our country not one “maverick”. It is such an insult to say to the 500 plus members of Congress that EVERY governor has more executive experience than them, no matter how inexperienced they are!
When you are introducing your VP running mate to the country and you need to list in her qualifications…..PTA…..she might be underqualified!

A VP was picked without being Vetted. Picked without a complete background check. Picked only to cover up a glaring weakness, to shore up the base, and totally inexperienced.
Palin?
No, Hairplug Joe.
Warm up HITLERY, Joe is about to get Vince Fostered.

Biden’s great, and looking more wonderful ever since Palin arrived on the scene. It was nice of the Repubs to pick someone who made our VP’s credentials stand out. Count on them to try to keep the election on this “non-issue” stuff, because that’s their only chance. Sad.

–dl–Alaska’s being the largest state in the union in itself make it harder to govern.
I lived there for 25 years and worked with political and business leaders. 95% of south 48 people are ignorant about Alaska, its people and problems.
Palin finally got the gas line from Prudhoe ok’ed to be built. This was prohibited 25 to 30 years by the Democrats.

I was in the Army, and the way they change unit strengths based on the needs of particular missions, confusing the two is easy to do. A brigade is going to be composed of battalions, and maybe various support companies thrown in as needed.
I wouldn’t get on the guy about that. He’s not a staff officer or commander who knows the intricacies of the units under his command.

Sarah has EXECTUTIVE experience *running a government* (something NONE of the other candidates can actually boast, even John McCain as Governor of Alaska and got there by defeating the *incumbent* Republican Governor, who was definitely part of the “old school” and who WAS very much in the pocket of the big oil companies. We in Alaska wanted change – and we got it in the person of Sarah Palin!
Sarah Palin is everything she looks to be and more. Her approval rating as Governor of Alaska has been as high as 95% and is currently leveled out consistently in the upper 80 percentile throughout the state (and in both parties) – the HIGHEST approval rating of ANY sitting Governor.

I tried to explain it, but obama supporters are too drunk on kool-aid to understand. Rove got inside little obama’s head. Kaine would of made a better choice. Instead, Mr. chicken paniced and picked a 36-year Senator a stale arrogant loser who could not get votes in his own state.

This is a presidential election, not a pro wrestling match. This isn’t commentary, it’s hate mongering and name calling. Hiding behind your anonymity, you immediately abandon any trace of civility and humanity and jump at the opportunity to heap the worse sort of disgusting venom upon each other. You leave this kind of childish and irresponsible crap all over the Internet and it’s appalling. All of you should be

The name is McCain!
Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden also

Removing Russia from the G-8 is good
judgement! Not punishing the Russians
invading Georgia is bad judgement!
Talking to Iran when they continue to

bad judgement as they will use the

Talk without progress is useless!
