Biden Meets With Saakashvili, Pledges American Support
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: Sen. Joe Biden met with Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili Friday in Milwaukee, pledging American support for Georgia and promising not to "let the intentions of the Russian government to bring down the democratically-elected government" of Georgia.
Biden and Saakashvili met privately for about 45 minutes, but, despite an Associated Press report to the contrary, members of Biden’s traveling press pool were in fact permitted in for a five-minute portion beforehand, giving reporters a chance to hear from the two long-time friends.
"We’re old friends, we’ve known each other for some time," said Biden. "Before President Saakashvili was president, we knew one another and we had been in close contact before and during and after Russia tried to topple a democratically-elected government."
In the midst of rampant speculation that he was about to be named as Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate, Biden traveled to the war-torn region in early August.
"When the invasion was taking place, I spoke to the president and asked whether I could come to Tbilisi and I was happy to do that and thought it was important to show American solidarity and support. We will not let, we will not let the intentions of the Russian government to bring down a democratically-elected government."
Biden said that he assured Saakashvili over dinner in the Georgian capital that the United States would "make a considerable commitment in the economic well-being and stability in Georgia."
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee warned that the Russian invasion was also aimed at intimidating other former Soviet bloc countries.
"The intent was to also intimidate the entire former Soviet Union, as the Americans think of it, independent countries all along the border," he said.
A grateful Georgian leader thanked Biden for his trip at such a vital time.
"You flew all the way through a lot more than half of the world to the city that was being bombarded at that moment," said Saakashvili. "It was a very, very, very great decision of yours and in the middle of the whole presidential expectations surrounding you – vice-presidential expectations – and still basically you came straight into the middle of the conflict and did something that was very brave of you. And very few people would have done that. And I certainly will not forget that. And my people are not going to forget it. And we will never forget your solidarity and generosity."
"I think what is important is that you understand so well what is at stake for America, for freedom, for democracy, for your interests as well as for the values that America has and for which America is so respected," continued the Georgian president. "I think we have lots of generosity and solidarity from American people and worldwide, lots of sympathy, but you were the first one to come up with a very concrete program of what should have been done in that very complicated situation."
Biden emphasized that Russia must "pay a price" for their actions.
"What we’ve been talking about and what we’ll continue to talk about is our effort to see to it that they do not succeed," concluded Biden. "It’s important Russians pay a price for what they’ve done."
"I’m really proud to call you my friend and to call you a friend of my people, my region," stated Saakashvili.

WASHINGTON, Sept 25, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ — James Terry, Chief Public Advocate for the Consumers Rights League, today testified at a joint House Administration and House Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on “Federal, State and Local Efforts to Prepare for the General 2008 Election,” where he highlighted “corruption at every level of ACORN including embezzlement, cover-ups, misuse of taxpayer funds and voter fraud.” An excerpt of his testimony follows:
James Terry, Chief Public Advocate, Consumers Rights League:
“ACORN routinely says it will clean up its act. Yet, given its decade-long history of voter fraud, embezzlement, and misuses of taxpayer funds, ACORN’s pattern of fraud can no longer be dismissed as a series of ‘unfortunate events.’
“The problem of voter registration fraud raises serious questions for this committee, and the Consumers Rights League appreciates that the right questions are being asked.
“Here are the most important questions right now: We know about the thousands of potentially fraudulent voter registration cards turned in by ACORN and caught by officials. But given the size of ACORN’s efforts and the fact that the abuses appear to be systemic, we believe it is fair to question how many more fraudulent registrations have not been discovered, Furthermore, as this mega organization with a decades long history of violating the law is turned to get out the vote efforts, we believe it is fair to question how many fraudulent registrations may lead to fraudulent votes or what other activities they are willing to undertake to influence the election.
“These are serious questions, especially in light of recent election results which show that a just few votes can change the outcome of an election, the course of our country and the course of history.
“While we do not presume to tell this committee how to address this problem, we respectfully submit that our nation’s election system is facing a concerted campaign that raises serious issues that merit the committee’s oversight and attention.”

The same lies and propaganda
that got us into Vietnam and
Iraq.
The escalating tensions with
Russia stem from the eastward
expansion of NATO. At the
dissolution of the Soviet
Union, NATO had assured the
Russians that once the Soviet
troops pulled out of eastern
Europe, there would be no
expansion of NATO east of
West Germany – that NATO
would not put its military
infrastructure even in
East Germany. NATO has broken
its word. Russian responses
to NATO actions are not a
surprise to those who know
the facts.

all powers come to an end. roman power, greek power, turkish power, napoleon, azteks and incas, communist [power, tribal power, NAZI POWER, just look in history, and you see, all powers came to an end. the last collaps was 19 years ago, the communist power collapsed, only the kapitalist power remained. till now.
\that power is collapsing now.
Bail out or not, does not matter.
700 billion dollar or 7000 billion dollar , nothing on this wolrd will change this , kapitalism is collapsing anyhow.
after the goldrush? one of the two, a really big war, third world war, and too much suffering.
or a new honest system based on real love for eachother. but first the liars and cheaters have to be punished.
look to rhe bible, the last chapter.
only the people who are honest will stay alive, the rest will be schreddered till peaces.
Just wait and see.
thats is going to happen, and 100 trucks full of printed paper in the shape of dollars or euro or yens, do NOT change this.

I’ve seen information on this Russian/Georgian incident from both sides. I see the perspectives of both sides, but what it comes down to is making a choice as to whom you side with. In a George W Bush world order that is a little harder than it should be.
I know that Joe has “grown up” with many of the current leaders and officials of these countries that we deal with. It is like they all started out in the mail room together, only in different countries. They know each other’s families, and have taken each other’s measure over the years, and pretty well know what to expect of one another.
The bottom line for me is that after studying Joe’s life, and meeting he and his family, and having my own chance to take his measure, as an observer at least, I trust his judgment, which is based on so many more things than I know about these situations. He always goes to these trouble spots and asks questions of everyone and sees for himself what is going on rather than taking second-hand information.
His depth of experience and perspective is so much more than Palin’s that there is no comparison. I know there will be right-wingers who will come along and smear Joe’s judgment, but it is all just opinions. As I’ve said, you have to make your choice of who you believe and trust. I’ve made my stand.

What if Clinton, and Rick Davis, knew they could buy anybody they wanted. It Fixed McCains Record in the past. And Do not, forget how it bought, Nixons election. I am sure, that special interest groups, who have paid lobbiests, could fix any paperwork. Clinton, had bought de-regulatios, paperwork fixers, and now McCain will have to distance himself, from Rick Davis and Clinton scandels. After all, what if they try to buy Joe Biden. They made Obamas paperwork disappear before. After all, the FBI has been bought before. Those special interest groups, are still on Wall Street, and in other postistion in HIGH Government. Pure disinformation. That Biden promotes it should give unwitting Democrats on the Blue Team a clue about their role in the Grand Chessgame.
Saakashvili launched a brutal, boneheaded surprise attack on sleeping Russian troops and civilians in South Ossetia, killing almost 2,000 people. His forces, trained and equipped by the US and Israel, immediately collapsed. He almost certainly received a green light and promises of support from the US administration for this provocation, to which the Russians predictably responded.

I’ve also heard that the Russians “just happend to have” all of their best troops real close down there on the border. So who was provoking whom? Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
You have your perspective and I have mine. There is no absolute truth in the matter.

Well spoken, neo.
Another clue: Paging Dr. Brzezinski!
“It is also a fact that America is too democratic at home to be autocratic abroad. This limits the use of America’s power, especially its capacity for military intimidation. Never before has a populist democracy attained international supremacy. But the pursuit of power is not a goal that commands popular passion, except in conditions of a sudden threat or challenge to the public’s sense of domestic well-being. The economic self-denial (that is, defense spending) and the human sacrifice (casualties, even among professional soldiers) required in the effort are uncongenial to democratic instincts. Democracy is inimical to imperial mobilization.”
“Two basic steps are thus required: first, to identify the geostrategically dynamic Eurasian states that have the power to cause a potentially important shift in the international distribution of power and to decipher the central external goals of their respective political elites and the likely consequences of their seeking to attain them;… second, to formulate specific U.S. policies to offset, co-opt, and/or control the above…”
“…To put it in a terminology that harkens back to the more brutal age of ancient empires, the three grand imperatives of imperial geostrategy are to prevent collusion and maintain security dependence among the vassals, to keep tributaries pliant and protected, and to keep the barbarians from coming together.”
- Zbigniew Brzezinski

I SENT THIS LETTER TO MY REPRESENTATIVES IN CONGRESS:
We demand that Congress stops adding earmarks and pork within the contents of the “Bail Out Bill”. In addition we do not want a payout to ACORN — or any organization like ACORN.
We feel this is an egregious abuse of House and the Senate positions in Congress. Enough is enough.
We will no longer continue to vote or support any Representative or Senator who votes for bills with earmarks and pork or allots money to ACORN.
I BELIEVE THE PEOPLE WHO WALKED AWAY WITH TONS OF MONEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BAIL OUT.
If the government agrees to pay off mortgages for people who bought homes they could not afford — then the government needs to pay off ALL mortgages for ALL legal American citizens.
I don’t want my tax payments used to pay off somebody else’s home!
I PERSONALLY AM AGAINST A WALL STREET BAILOUT BUT AT LEAST FORKING OVER A THIRD OF THE MONEY — WITH THE REST CONTINGENT ON EFFECTIVENESS — MAKES SENSE.
I AM TOTALLY AGAINST GIVING 10% TO ORGANIZATIONS LIKE “ACORN”. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BUY HOMES THEY CAN’T AFFORD. DO NOT BAIL THEM OUT.

Will they ever vote their conscience?
Didn’t see it coming?

“I’ve also heard that the Russians “just happend to have” all of their best troops real close down there on the border. So who was provoking whom? Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”
What about the huge exercises that were held by the US and Georgia that just happened to precede the Georgian attack?
Fact: The Russians called for a cease fire before their troops moved in. This was blocked by the US and Britain at the UN. What does that tell you? Would the Russians have called for a cease fire if they intended the attack before the main fighting even got underway, before the Georgians abandoned fueled and fully armed tanks and thousands of M-16′s and assorted other weaponry not to mention entire cities? Why would you call for a ceasefire beforehand?
What about the operations plans discovered by the Russians detailing an attack on Abkhazia by the Georgians?
Everybody knew that tensions were high. In fact the US told Georgia not to attack, so obviously THEY KNEW.
Saakashvilli is a liar, Biden bites. Biden bites Saak’s ties! While McCain cares more about the Georgia of Stalin than the Georgia of Ray Charles.
When did this all start, I’d say Yugoslavia, or maybe it was when Gorbachev was told that NATO would not expand eastwards. Liars again.
Georgia attacks… The Russians made me do it! Give more money to the attacker. US foreign policy at it’s finest, and from the Democrats.

This Saakashvili is a loser.
There is intense pressure on
him to step down voluntarily.
All opposition parties in
Georgia want him gone. They
want to remain non-aligned.
They want closer ties with
Russia. They are rejecting a
military alliance with NATO.
They want economic integration
with EU.

historyforgotten err remembered…McCain lied during debate???? Back it up…
Henry Kissingher believes Barack Obama misstated (lied) his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized. He says “Senator McCain is RIGHT. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level. My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain. We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”

In a remarkable statement for the president of any country Medvedev has claimed Saak is a drug addict.
Make of it what you will.
Recent polls indicate that only 22% of Ukraine citizens want to join NATO. Why is the US pushing a military alliance on people who don’t want one? I wonder how many Europeans want UK and GE to be in NATO, or are they even asked?

Interesting that the posts with well crafted sentences, proper spelling, and a scarcity of references to entertainment television all seem to be skeptical if not cautionary about involving ourselves in what is patently an encroachment on Russia’s borders, flagrantly breaking Reagan’s promises to Gorbachev (as the Bush administration has shown contempt for any treaty obligation that stood in their way) and noticing that Russia’s readiness for the Georgian attack is easy to understand, given the low-level sniping of over a month previous, including shutting off the water supply!
How, Mr. McCain, how, Mr. Obama, Mr. Biden (I won’t trouble the young lady from Alaska about it) is it OK for NATO to use force to pry Kosovo away from Serbia, Kosovo the heart and soul of Slavic Orthodox tradition back to Cyril and Methodius, but Alans and Russians in Ossetia and Abkhazia have no right to independence from Georgia to whom they were given by Stalin, the Georgian?
