Biden Shrugs Off McCain’s Call to Fire SEC Chief
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffee Reports: Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden Thursday said John McCain’s call to fire SEC chairman Christopher Cox amounted to nothing more than "a change in personnel" rather than "a change in policy", citing the suggestion as evidence of a lack of Republican accountability.
"Think of this administration – has anyone at all been held responsible for anything that has happened? Nothing!" Biden said at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio. "What about the notion of honor? Somebody? Somebody? No one’s responsible for the failures of Katrina, no one was responsible about the miscalculation of the war, no one was responsible for Wall Street crashing and may bring us down with it."
"Ladies and gentlemen," Biden continued. "John now says the problem is greed on Wall Street. John called for a Republican appointee, a former congressman, the head of the SEC to step down. That’s a change in personnel, that’s not a change in policy."
"We know John was in the wrong place and we were in the right place," Biden said minutes later about the two presidential tickets’ past approaches to the economy. "But that’s not the important question. The important question is what do we do now. Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s starting by not electing another Republican administration. That’s a start!"

I think it was Bush 5 years ago that called attention to the corpse named Freddie/Fannie. Barney Frank, the leading Democrat on the issue, sat complacent.
McCain called for action in 2006, again, the Democrats were complacent.
Why should we trust Obama when he has received more money from Freddie/Fannie than anyone else but the lead of the committee?
If Freddie/Fannie were fixed, the mortgage industry wouldn’t be a mess, and subsequently, this financial crisis would have been prevented, or at least, be much less severe.

What do you want done next? BHO and Biden talk like they want to take over Wall Street. I do not want Washington directing my investements or managing my retirement accounts, like my 401K. I would rather put the money under the bed them put it their hands. Good luck on investing in the old USA with all that money taken out of wall street.

Hey matt. Careful there buddy. It looks like you are happy about the economy. We know Obama is jumping for joy and thinking this is a good thing for him. You don’t really need to point it out, though. Does Obama really care about anything other than winning? I don’t think so, and his glee about the economy is a real turn off.

LESSONS
The lesson in this one single bill is that in the housing sector, Senator Obama is seems more aware of the issues that affect home owners in this cycle of the market. He was looking to tighten the regulations, while Senator Clinton was seeking to loosen the regulations.

This is more evidence that McCain hasn’t got a clue what to do about the economy. He heard Ben Stein call for the firing of Secretary Paulson, Cox, and the creation of a trust company to separate the distressed assets from the banks. The next day, he parrots two out of three in order to give the impression that he’s one of the smartest guys in the room.
Even if a change at the SEC was ultimately deemed necessary, what did this little bit of grandstanding accomplish, other than to get him a little attention, and distract people from the reality that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
As for being happy about the meltdown in the economy, I am happy that a terminal disease which has been silently consuming the current assets and future prospects of this country has finally gotten so bad that the folks who have been exploiting it have been exposed. At least now we know what we’re up against, the first step towards fixing it.

SEC Chairman Chris Cox is a good strong, conservative Republican who has been doing more to serve this country in a time of crisis than either of the candidates. At least Obama didn’t go off on him in public to make a political point. Who is this guy, McCain? God? If he wanted to make a sincere effort, he would have called the Chairman up at an appropriate time and let him know his concerns. To dress the guy down in public like that in an attempt to score political points is INCREDIBLY, INCREDIBLY petty and, to say the least, unhelpful. Let the guy do his job!!! My goodness!

I love republicans….nobody has a knack for mindless spin like them. Why didn’t Barney Fank do anything…or Obama……how about the republican senate and congress didn’t allow any democrat to do anything that would help americans..heck no….that might cause them to lose an election because people would have seen they were a piece of crap .. oh I remember, you were too tied up in the help the rich get richer agenda. Do you honestly want me to believe that John McCain would have voted yes on a regulation bill? That would have been a departure from the 19 other times he voted for de-regulation…god forbid. We are not eating the crap sandwich this time. I am sure glad the american people stopped mcBush in his persuit of putting everyones social security in this mess. Nothing like taking the spoon out of grandma’s mouth and kicking her to the curb “cause the market tanked due to this lack on oversite neo con agenda”. she just lost her retirement funds she paid into for all those years just to make your buddies rich. Good thing repugnakins don’t have a concious…or they might even feel bad.

Obama argued a year ago for better controls on home lending, and six months ago for a rationalization of finance regs.
His arc shows promise:
Attended Harvard Law School
- Passed the bar on the first try (Hillary had to take it three times (? not sure of that)
- President of the Harvard Law Review,
spent 3 years as a community organizer (right out of school)
- Created a voter registration drive that registered 150,000 new voters
- 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor
- 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people
- Chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee
- 4 years in the United States Senate representing state of 12,831,970 people
-Sponsored 131 bills, including creating more transparency (i.e., “reform”)
-Served on the Foreign Affairs, Environment, Public Works, and Veteran’s Affairs committees.
If I can borrow a phrase, “That’s the experience we need.”
I didn’t get a Harvard education, but but I admire the fact that he did, and especially what he has done with it since.

All I know is that Republicans always favor the business community. “Let the market work it out”. Well, speculators caused our gas to go sky high. Remember when Enron caused an artificial jack in the price of electricity in California. The government dropped interest rates time and time again for the market. Bankers loaned money like it was Christmas presents. And the speculators, the CEOs, the bankers all got rich while we have suffered. And did our government have any oversight on what was going on? They gave them a blank check and said the market could govern themselves. With no one checking, they did as they pleased. And is anyone being held accountable?
The Democrats will probably give my money to the poor, but at least the poor aren’t heartless.

I admit I AM happy about the economy – or at least the timing. In 1999 McCain voted for the Gramm-Leach-Bliley act (authored by his adviser Phil Gramm) which is directly responsible for this mess. Us liberals knew in ’99 that Repubs were going to use it to rob us blind and then stick it to the middle class taxpayers exactly like this! I’m just very happy it “hit the fan” BEFORE the election.

Biden hit the nail on the head.
Changing the SEC chief, when the president continues to promote unlimited increases in the national debt to pay for his pointless war, would not change a thing. Our government debt is out of control, and the republican debtor-nation philosophy has trickled down to our corporations, brokerages, mortgage lenders, and consumers.
Now, with the country’s debt-to-equity ratio at a staggeringgly high level, and our dollar increasingly devalued as a result, our economony has no cushion. Just like a family deep in debt hit with a sudden health crisis, or a corporation deep in debt hit by a temporary slowdown in business – Our federal government is up to its neck in debt and cannot weather this storm except by borrowing another trillion dollars from China and Saudi Arabia to bail out our financial institutions – Those companies who blindly followed bush’s leadership of “borrow, borrow, borrow! And cut taxes (=borrow) to stimulate the economy!”
Biden is absolutely right. McCain’s exhortation is just the typical “firing someone to fix the blame”. What is needed is a change of policy. Obama’s policy is: A pay as you go balanced budget. The same policy that is embraced by every successful corporation in America, and by every strong government of the world.
Day by day, it becomes clearer who exhorts nonsense, the same nonsense of uncontrolled debt that got America to it’s weakest financial position in decades.
Posted by: clifton | September 18, 2008, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm
Hi Clifton,
Are you kidding me?
Obama, balance the budget? Do you know how much expansion of the federal government he plans? Even all his new taxes won’t pay for 1/3 of it.
The US has the second highest corporate tax in the WORLD. Obama wants to raise it 10% more. The immediate effect will be: all corporations will fire all nonessential personnel. All corporations will immediately raise the prices for the good and services they produce (so much for Obama’s middle class tax cut!!!) And many corporations will relocate overseas, taking formerly American jobs with them.
Small business owners will face a 5% nominal federal tax increase, a 5% increase in FUTA tax, the above named corporate tax, and capital gains tax. As a result, they are going to go ballistic slashing jobs to try to continue to afford their mortgages, slashing expenses. Can you say record unemployment? Can you say economic meltdown? These banks and airlines are BARELY scraping by right now as it is. Imagine with an extra 10% off the top to pay for Obama’s expanded entitlements.
Simple logic and common sense tell you that socialism does not mix well in our country. Barack Hussein Obama’s plan for this country is economic disaster. Obama’s top economic advisers just drove Fannie Mae into the ground while taking home huge paychecks, and Obama himself is the #2 recipient of Fannie Mae bribery cash even though he is only a freshmen (1st term) senator.
Castro brought Change to Cuba. And Obama wants to bring Change to America. But it is not reform, transparency, or bipartisanship. He just wants his way, da.mn the consequences on our great country.

HawkTheSlayer, I appreciate your question, but here’s where your’re wrong.
Sure, Dem’s want more social programs. If you add up all of thee social programs in their wildest dreams, it comes to around $300 billion.
However, Obama will not start another pointless war. The Iraq war already cost the US $1 Trillion, and the continuing costs (caring for a 270,000 Iraq vets for 60 years) is estimated to cost as much as $50 Trillion in the lifetimes of us and our children.
I don’t agree with Obama on everything, but even if he got a blank check for his social programs and middle-class tax cuts, the size of his government would be tiny compared to a republican adminstration War Government. And those social programs and tax cuts, well they might even do a little good here and there.
So when comparing size of government, we need to look at the big picture, not just isolate social programs of one candidate and ignore the war programs of the other.

“Can you say record unemployment? Can you say economic meltdown? ”
Ah, yes, Hawkslayer, me and a couple of hundred million other Americans are saying those very things right now.
Ah, but I don’t recall saying those things after 8 years of Bill Clinton.
The different is leadership:
Clinton: Balance the budget, pay as we go.
Bush: Borrow, borrow, borrow, debt is no problem, man. Borrow $1 Trillion more for the war. Borrow $300 billion more for tax cuts, they will stimulate the economy (when is that stimulus gonna kick in?). Borrow another $500 billion to bail out bad mortgages. Borrow borrow borrow, and all will be good.
Well, it isn’t good.
Obama’s philosophy – balanced pay as you go bugdet – is indisputable. Like him or not, remind everyone of his middle name if it makes you feel you score a racist point there, but none the less, Barack Hussein Obama is right.

Earlier this week, Obama made an early attempt to attack Governor Sarah Palin on the earmark issue. He claimed that Palin is responsible for taking many earmarked funds for her state as she sat in the Governor’s office in Juneau and that her attack on him for earmarks is, therefore, illegitimate.
“I know the governor of Alaska has been, you know, saying she is change and that is great. She is a skillful politician. But when you been taking all these earmarks when it is convenient and then suddenly you are the champion anti-earmark person. That is not change, come on. I mean, words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just make stuff up. We have a choice to make and the choice is clear.”
But, this return fire on Palin’s ridiculing of Obama for his many earmarks is not very effective. While Obama is pointing fingers at Palin, news came out this week that Senator Obama had unsuccessfully tried several times to get multi-million dollar earmarks for one of his biggest Chicago contributors. So, his attack on Palin seems more like smokescreen than cruise missile.
Obama twice attempted to direct more than $3 million dollars in taxpayer funds to the Adler Planetarium Museum in Chicago. It just so happens that the Adler’s chairman is one of Barack’s biggest Chicago fundraisers.
The planetarium’s chairman, then and still, is Frank Clark, chief executive of ComEd, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Energy. He has pledged to raise more than $200,000 for Mr. Obama’s run for the White House.
Even more cozy, this earmark would have benefited a Joe Biden supporter.
Moreover, the Adler Planetarium is represented by the lobbying firm National Group LLP, co-founded by William Oldaker, who helped launch Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s political action committee in 2005. Mr. Oldaker, a partner with the Delaware Democrat’s son in another Washington lobbying and law firm, is no longer involved with Mr. Biden’s PAC, Unite Our States.
On the other hand, it must be pointed out that taking earmarked funds that someone else arranged for is a little different than actually being the one creating the diversion of funds. Obama criticizes Palin for taking funds that Congress offered her, but Obama is responsible for being one doing the offering.
Palin’s record on reform is clear, of course. But, Obama’s record on over spending is also clear. His finger pointing is hollow rhetoric.

HawkTheSlayer, your list of democrats receiving Fannie Mae donations is quote impressive, but let’s see what can be found outside of the conservative blogs where your data came from.
From today’s New York Times:
“The New York investor Geoffrey T. Boisi, a member of Freddie Mac’s board, contributed more than $70,000 to Mr. McCain and Republican Party committees working for his election. Both he and Richard F. Hohlt, a Fannie Mae lobbyist, are among the McCain “bundlers” who have raised $100,000 to $250,000 from others, according to the campaign Web site.
Six members of the Republican lobbying firm Fierce Isakowitz & Blalock, all Fannie Mae lobbyists, have given Mr. McCain $13,250, records show.”
Now, as to Barack Obama:
“Mr. Obama’s contributors include the Freddie Mac senior vice president Robert Y. Tsien. He does not accept contributions from lobbyists, but Mr. Obama has been a favorite of Fannie Mae employees and their political action committee, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.”
So, there’s a little to go around here on all sides. When you post only the conservative blog data, do you expect that anyone will take you seriously?
Point is, though, that neither Obama or McCain or any of the congressmen who might have received donations caused Fannie’s or Freddie’s collapse. Fannie and Freddie simply buy loans from Banks so that banks can make more loans. The loans went bad due to systemic weakness in the economy, causing Fannie and Freddie to become insolvent. F&F didn’t make those loans in the first place – the banks did – and F&F couldn’t have done anything to stop the loans from going bad.
It’s the loss of 200,000 jobs under Bush, and the price of gas going to $4 a gallon, and the added strain of $1 Trillion in debt for a pointless war, that all added up to a credit crunch and people not being able to pay their mortgages.
Keep your eye on the ball, my friend.

Senator Obama makes this old man McCain look like the moron he is. The country deserves smart leadership and a new direction. We need President Obama to right the wrongs, and fight the corruption. We don’t need another McBush in the whitehouse. McDumb has all the Bush people working for him. That really shows that he won’t be any different. McCain would actually be much worse. With the country in crisis, we can’t afford McWrong. We need to begin right away with President Obama getting things done.

Hey matt. Careful there buddy. It looks like you are happy about the economy. We know Obama is jumping for joy and thinking this is a good thing for him. You don’t really need to point it out, though. Does Obama really care about anything other than winning? I don’t think so, and his glee about the economy is a real turn off.

You are projecting how republicans felt about the Iraq war and terrorism during the 2004 elections.

Why should we trust Obama when he has received more money from Freddie/Fannie than anyone else but the lead of the committee?
————
Because in these last 8 years, we lost our jobs, our homes, our dignity, our peace, we were attacked on this country…what else can I tell you?
As a Christian I would tell you that God has not been on our side.
With Democrats we had our homes, we had good paying jobs, no-one attacked us at home, and we had peace.
As a Christian I would tell you that God was on our side.
So all I am left to say is,
ENOUGH OF REPUBLICAN CORRUPTION AND LIES.
THIS TIME,
DEMOCRATS

Loves this country,
Sweetheart, you do not love this country.
No one who loves this country and its people can vote for CAIN.
Sorry,
but to vote for a 4 more years of Republicans, which would make it to 12 years in total, is just being antipatriotic and truly hating our country.

McCAIN CAMPAIGN ATTEMPTS TO COVER UP PALIN’S TROOPERGATE SCANDAL!!!
Didn’t Palin learn the lessons of Watergate? The break-in to Democtatic Party headquarters by the NIXON Campaign to look at a few papers was really nothing…
It was the ensuing COVER-UP that killed Nixon! Since Palin is clearly a student and understudy of Nixon, she and McCain should both know that…
Everyone in America knows a cover-up when they see one now! The only thing that is “tainted” about that bi-partisan investigation in Alaska now is PALIN!!!
Something smells fishy (or Moosey) here………..
Republicans are cheats, LIARS and crooks!! Always have been, always will be!! The last honest Republican was Abraham Lincoln…

PLALIN’S COVER-UP WILL NEVER WORK!!!
The American People will NOT BE FOOLED this time!!!
How can this even be happening? McCain brings this new inexperienced person out and announces her as his Vice Presidential candidate?
Then Right out of the gate one of the first things out of her mouth was a “PROVEN LIE!” About the bridge to nowhere and her maverick status!
What the heck is going on here? I guess I was right in what I said before, Republicans are cheats, LIARS and crooks!! Always have been, always will be!! The last honest Republican was Abraham Lincoln…

Congress was bullied and intimidated into setting up the process (Research the Community Redevelopment Act) by community organizers, activist groups and that familiar outfit called ACORN to make loans to unqualified borrowers – subprime mortgages. Barack Obama did a lot of community organizing for ACORN. The Democratic plan of wealth redistribution began as the sub-prime lending era which is now the biggest disaster in economic history of the US. It is as simple as that folks. So what do the Democratic Party and Barack Obama have in store now—another “change” we can count on.

Impeach?
Man, you guys are running out of ammunition fast!
Now here’s the complete republican arsenal:
Rezko
Ayers
Impeach
Let’s compare the arsenal we’ve got pointed your way:
4,126 Americans killed for a lie
30,233 Americans wounded for a lie
$1 Trillion spent for a lie
$1 Trillion in national debt
$4 a gallon gasoline
Bin Laden still out there
Al Queda stronger than ever
84,000 jobs lost last month
200,000 jobs lost this year
Stock market at 10-year low
Wages stagnant
America resented by our allies
The Dollar at it’s lowest level in a decade
Confidence in the US goverment 26% (gallup.com)
Trooper Gate
DUI’s
Little republican boys out there, the confederate flag ain’t flying over America any more. You’ll have to find more than Rezko and Ayers.

As a moderate republican I am really starting to belive that this selection of Palin was a huge mistake. Look, as the days go by we here more of the truth about her dealings. Every day we all hear something new and not good. She stated that “THE PALIN/MCCAIN administration…This is a huge mistake becouse she is not the one running for president and we all know that, due to McCains age and health this is a scary scary one but a reality. Even republicans are starting to look the other way. Chuck Haggle a conservative republican very experienced man on foreign policy stated that Palin just dont have the experience on foreign policy to run this nation..He stated just becouse you live near Alaska it does not make you in expert on foreign policy. I have to agree with Chuck, he is also a dear friend of McCain but with that aside he must be honest and tell it like it is. The other issues is that Palin is refusing to be part of the TROOPERGATE SCANDAL investigation..This is sad a s it looks like shes hidding something. After all the folks investigating this is made of 8 republicans and 4 democrats. We all had enogh of this secrecy with the BUSH clowns. I really think that Americans are going to reject this lady Palin becuse she is not experienced enogh and her Ideals are just to extreme nad she LIES,LIES, LIES. I fell sorry for McCain hes like a puppet they more around in a hundred diffrent directions. Hes speech is slowing down, he moves around with difficulties. When you had bouts with Cancer you have to be carefull you dont over extend yourself as it weakens your amune system and you can have a serious relapse. I as a moderate republican I will hold my nose and elect the person who I think is the one this time around. Without a dought I really belive that Obama/Biden will be a great team. I hope Americans wake up and realize that this too.

I never liked McCain,he is a trully a hot head and people are starting to see it. Palin was not so bad into we starting to hear the truth about her. She is no fiscal conseravative thats for sure.

It is very simple….The Republicans were in charge of the Presidency the last 8 years and of Congress the last 18 of 20 years. If McCain wanted to seriously change any financial institution (Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, SEC) he could have/should have. If he can’t convince a Republican majority and Republican president to take action (assuming he did push hard) then how he deal with what assuredly will be a Democratic majority in Congress? The answer is he won’t be able to and will regress into what Bush has become the last two years (i.e., a veto machine)…That is not change. That is status quo.

I am asking everyone to email a note to Senator Boxer who is the head of the Senate Ethics Committee to ask him to investigate Sen Obama breaking the Logan Act in his attempt to get Iraq to not withdrawl troops until he took office. This is a well known story with Iraqi saying he requested it. Here is the note I sent. you can put your name in place of mine at the bottom. Please make sure you include your name and state and county at the bottom. You can exclude pumapac if you desire. Please do a bcc or blind copy if you can to prowl@pumapac.org
The more people who do this the better chance we have of getting some action on this terrible act of treason and selfishness allowing people to maybe die in a war so he could be elected. Everyone is invited to come to blog.pumapac.org a place where the common person is trying to have his voice hear. A super friendly place. please pass this around to other blog sites that might attract people to join in this effort.

SUBJECT: Obama in violation of Logan Act!

Contact: Murphy@pumapac.org
Dear Member of the Senate Ethics Committee,
I am writing to request that you open an investigation into the actions of Senator Barack Obama with regard to his July visit to Iraq. News reports, as well as the statements from Senator Obama’s own campaign, confirm that Senator Obama attempted to negotiate a plan for troop withdrawals and a framework for the American presence in Iraq in such a way as to benefit him politically. This is clearly an unethical way for a member of the United States Senate to act, using his status and leverage as a Senator and prominent candidate to undermine the Administration and to benefit his own political career. It also appears to be a direct violation of the Logan Act.
From the Logan Act:
“Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”
I am a member of Puma PAC, People United Means Action (http://pumapac.org). We are the Voice of the Voters in the Democratic Party and we strongly oppose Senator Obama’s selection as our Party’s nominee. We believe he is an unethical politician, disloyal to the fundamental values of our democracy.
Thank you for your consideration and time.
Sincerely,
first initial and last name and county state
Puma PAC Democrat

Some Dems have called for similar firings of people they can’t touch. The fact is, Cox should be removed. The reason: He wiped out the uptick rule last year WITHOUT fixing naked shorting. Naked shorting is nearly the same thing as counterfeiting stock certificates. If you allow people to create stocks out of thin air and then sell them with no uptick rule to stop the skid, you are a fool who should be unemployed, especially in a time when one party spends millions trying to run down perceptions of the economy.
