Boehner Backs Bailout Bill

"I’m encouraging every member of our conference – if their conscience will allow them to — to support this bill," said House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, just now.

Freudian slip? I caught that and thought it was an odd phrase.

Looks like the Republicans have decided to play it safe. The Democrats had enough votes without the Republicans, but it would have been nice to see someone stand for the taxpayers. The economy may still fail, but the bailout will give the wealthy time to move their assets to safe havens. There are no safe havens for the poor.

HAVE YOU UPDATED YOUR “STORY” YET, JAKE?
from Ben Smith / Politico:
Bracelet coda
Obama has been criticized from the right today for mentioning a bracelet given him by a slain soldier’s mother whose ex-husband later said she didn’t want Obama talking about it.
But the mother tells the AP that she was “ecstatic” about the mention.

Independent, I think it was important for this bill to be passed a bipartisan and present a unified front to the people.
The House GOP could care less about the taxpayers as they wanted to stuff in corporate tax breaks.

Proud day for you, beating up on someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Bill Clinton praised a presidential candidate yesterday. “The American people, for good and sufficient reasons, admire him,” Clinton said on The View. “He’s given something in life the rest of us can’t match.” The problem: He was talking about John McCain.
[UPDATE, Sept. 25: Clinton can't help himself: He praised McCain again today, telling Good Morning America that he understands why McCain wants to delay Friday's debate. ""We know he didn't do it because he's afraid, because Sen. McCain wanted more debates," Clinton said. "I presume he did that in good faith since I know he wanted -- I remember he asked for more debates to go all around the country and so I don't think we ought to overly parse that."]
At the Democratic National Convention in August, Clinton promised that he and Hillary would do everything possible to get Barack Obama elected. Since then, he’s been a nonentity on the campaign trail. He just announced plans to visit swing states with Obama next week, but only “after the Jewish holidays.” (Presumably he’ll wait for Yom Kippur, which is Oct. 9, not Sukkot, which ends Oct. 22.) But his presence won’t necessarily be a boon; even when he’s praising Obama, it sounds tepid.
I LOVE YOU BILL CLINTON. YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIFT A FINGER FOR THE EMPTY SUIT. KEEP FEIGNING SUPPORT. I LOVE IT. OBAMA IS NOT FIT TO SHINE YOUR SHOES.

“Senator McCain is absolutely right that the earmarks process has been abused…”

“John mentioned the fact that business taxes on paper are high in this country, and he’s absolutely right…”
“John is right we have to make cuts…”

This whole thing is the fault of the people. Yes the Dem-wits want to blame Bush and McCain…the Repugnants want to blame Dodd, Frank, Pelosi, Reid..etc. but in reality it is our own fault. We continue to elect the same old scumbags over and over. Ted Kennedy is dying in some hospital and they will probably elect him again even after he is dead. That is how stupid some people are. So I say good luck with that and lets remember when we point fingers that we must look in the mirror and start with ourselves. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It is our own fault. You will see the same faces on Capitol Hill after the election and we will see the same messes! They pit us against one another on purpose so we are so busy fussing about Obama or McCain that we forget what is important! That is the way it works! They deserve a raise! They know how to screw us over and over again and make us enjoy it! Get used to it! Here it comes again!

WASHINGTON (CNN)— Sen. John McCain retracted Sarah Palin’s stance on Pakistan Sunday morning, after the Alaska governor appeared to back Sen. Barack Obama’s support for unilateral strikes inside Pakistan against terrorists
“If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should,” Palin said.
During Friday night’s presidential debate in Mississippi, Obama took a similar stance and condemned the Bush administration for failing to act on the possibility terrorists are in Pakistan.
“Nobody talked about attacking Pakistan,” Obama said after McCain accused the Illinois senator of wanting to announce an invasion. “If the United States has al Qaeda, bin Laden, top-level lieutenants in our sights, and Pakistan is unable or unwilling to act, then we should take them out.”
McCain emphasized Sunday, Palin “shares” his view on the matter.
Palin for Obama ? LOL
Remember she put out a press release saying she supports Barack Obama’s energy plan before McCain choose her!

My country saved me … and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God. I’m going to fight for my cause every day as your president. I’m going to fight to make sure every American has every reason to thank God, as I thank Him: that I’m an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on earth, and with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach.”

but southern new mexico is strongly republican.

so i read a horrifying sentence today in Newsweek – reminding us that Bush had wanted to privatize social security when he was elected, i.e. allow everyone to put their social security in the stock market.
are we glad that didn’t happen?
so my question – where did the candidates stand on that initiative? can we expect the same type of ‘maverick’ and ultimately self-destructive behavior from a mccain or obama presidency?

Posted by: me | September 29, 2008, 12:49 am 12:49 am

somebody on this blog suggested that the markets are being manipulated to support an immediate response to the economic crisis and whip everyone into a frenzy. i sort of agree because pelosi, reed etc were sure in a rush to get the original 3 page bailout signed. also they were sure upset when mccain the sheriff showed up.
i believe that if mccain had not showed up when he did the bailout would be signed, sealed, and voted on with none of the new provisions to protect us. reminds me of the rush to invade iraq.
the more this things drags out the more it stinks-i bet they figured that into the equation.

Id run but I have smoked pot, snorted coke, am a womanizer, cheated on my taxes and driven intoxicated, and visited an internet porn site. As an Indepedent, seeing someone attack Republicans with insults and name-calling is par for the course from the left. The only one that is “delusional” is believing that “America is ruined” and that only Republicans are to blame for the bank and finance problems on wall street.
It is the Democrats that blocked bills to stop the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac breakdown.
McCain himself co-sponsored a bill to provide oversight and reign in the corruption of FM/FM.
The Democrats on the Senate Committee Blocked it!

JohnnyB,
Horsepucky.
Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.
The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal agency called the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC has been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure the fiscal soundness of national banks. For 140 years, the OCC examined the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an important but uncontroversial function. But a few years ago, for the first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool against consumers.
In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government’s actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.
But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.
