Bush Invites Obama to DC to Work on Bailout Bill; Obama Accepts
ABC News has learned that President Bush called Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., this evening and invited him to participate in a meeting about the Wall Street bailout bill tomorrow afternoon in Washington, D.C., with other congressional leaders, including Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Obama accepted the president’s invitation, a source tells ABC News.
The invitation comes at an interesting time. The president has not been in the middle of negotiations with Congress, leaving that task to his Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
McCain earlier today announced he was suspending his campaign — and his participation in the first presidential debate Friday night — in order to return to the Capitol to work on the flailing bill. McCain’s move has been denounced by Democrats and political observers as a political gimmick, though the McCain campaign insists the senator is trying to put politics aside to solve the stalled legislation.
Bush’s move could be seen as an attempt to aid McCain’s gambit by creating a presidential-level meeting where the Arizona Republican is present.
Obama still intends to attend the debate Friday evening.

I think its fine for the candidates, the President & cabinet and Congressional leadership to participate in this important meeting.
That’s what they should do.
But the two candidates should debate on Fri.
Elections and debates do not and should not halt because of outside events.

Ok, like Obama said, planes fly pretty fast. It is possible to be in DC right up to Friday afternoon, fly to the debate, spend a few hours there, and fly back to DC. Why have modern technology like airplanes, if we aren’t going to use them?
Posted by: S.Rice | September 24, 2008, 8:22 pm 8:22 pm
As president I’m sure that either of these candidates (like presidents before them) have been called to deal with multiple conflicting crisis . . .
Therefore, it is not UNREASONABLE to expect that they can attend a meeting in Washington D.C. — take a few hours out of their day to get to a DEBATE. And if needed fly BACK to resume whatever work is needed . . . I doubt you need to fly around to do really work on the bailout crisis — we do have phones, conference calls, e-mail and other equipment (but either case) . . .
YOU CAN DO BOTH GENTLEMEN.
America want the debates. It’s your duty to us.

Do not trust anything Bush says. Do not trust anything Paulson says. They helped put us in this spot. If we do a bail out whos next? Auto makers. They will be standing in line for their bail out. This is nothing short than nationalization. Go to GOP.Com and one of the things they say they stand for is no bail outs and no nationalization. They are trying to bail out the rich and wealthy once again and sticking it to us regular Joes.
This McCain thing is just a political move and he says if we they do not make a decision he will not debate. So the GOP wants to force a rushed bail out when we are talking a trillion dollors and protection for all these crooks including Bush. McCain, Bush, Rove, Paulson and the rest of them should be banned from being in any power to make any decisions.

They’ve been away from their jobs for 18 months and now suddenly they are desperately needed in DC. Whatever.
So, now they talk about the Great Depression – well, if you don’t want one then stop panicking. This bailout has no guarantee that it would work and, if it doesn’t, could actually cause the depression they are hoping to avoid. So what about a recession, we’ve had them before (and we’re living through on in Michigan now for some time).
Let the corrupt and greedy financials fail, and then help the good ones pick up the pieces when it’s all over.

First clear act of leadership we’ve seen from President Bush in a long while!
And, there is plenty of time to get back down south and have the debate as scheduled. If our leaders can’t multi-task, we don’t need them!

I think they should all be meeting and getting this crisis settled. As for the debate, I don’t care if they debate Friday or next Friday. What the heck? I want this financial crisis taken care of and I want Obama and McCain to be on the record. Get real, it doesn’t matter if the debates are postponed for a few days! Look at your 401K …. it has lost lots of money this past week. Money that won’t be made up easily. God, can’t we forget politics for a minute and think of the regular citizen who works and contributes to a retirement plan???????

One candidate is willing to walk away from the campaign for a few days to serve his country.
One candidate has apparently decided to cancel campaign ads thru the weekend.
The other candidate can’t seem to let go of the campaign that defines him, and states that he won’t go to Washington to pitch in unless somebody calls him and tells him he’s needed.
I know which candidate has my vote.

I just heard the news. I am speechless. MCCAIN DROPS 10 points behind on tuesday and suspends his campaign over a bunch of thieves in NY and DC on Wednesday late. Get real. He never surrendered in prison camp, why fold the tent over one issue. As President he would have tons of problems to deal with. Isn’t he up to it? The congress will hammer out the bail out. We need a new president. Answer the questions of the people. Don’t hide. Next we will hear that he is recalling all the voting machines because someone figured out the codes to rig the results…oops sorry Mr. Gore.

“If we don’t find solutions to our economic crisis”
The economic crisis is that people are losing their homes. The Bush Bailout does not touch that crisis, it just transfers billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money to failing companies so that Bush’s CEO friends can keep their jobs.
Left alone, the firms on Wall Street will consolidate and carry on without this “bailout”.
Remember WMD? Don’t be fooled again.

McCain knows that a leader leads by example, that is something you just can’t phone in.Warren Buffett discribed it as a financial Pearl Harbor, yet Obama says”I’ll leave it in Reid and Pelosi’s hands”, is that who the Obama supporters want running the country. All those people Paulson, Dodd, Schumer, Benanke and on and on ,that Obama is trusting to fix things–are the same people who are responsible for creating the crisis. It’s like putting the wolf in charge of the sheep. He reminds me of Bush when he sat in that classroom for 7 minutes not knowing what to do after the 9-11 attacks—we don’t need that type of guy again.Obama wouldn’t debate all summer even though he had said he would debate John McCain anytime, anywhere, now during this crisis–the debate is all important.Obama won’t go back to Washington because ,there the debates aren’t scripted ,and he doesn’t get 3 days to practice. He would have to use his own words, his own wit and his own wisdom–3 things he lacks

Who, in their right mind that isn’t an IDIOT, would see this as anything more than a desperate attempt to help McCain?
This is nothing but a joke and will do nothing but inject presidential politics into this issue. To paraphrase what Hillary said, The sea isn’t going to part and choirs of angels aren’t going to sing because McCain and Obama are in Washington trying to work out this deal that is already being reviewed by 100 other senators and all of congress. These guys have one vote each, that’s all.
McCain will do anything to distract voters from the real issue and that he has been knee deep in deregulation for years. The only people who would construe this as a selfless act are those partisans who already are in McCain’s pocket.

There’s no need to delay the debates. If these guys can campaign 5 different states in 1 week, why couldn’t they do their jobs as Senators and then on Friday, for a few hours, let the country know what each of them is made of. I smell some political gimmick from the Republicans. Bush and McCain are trying to delay the debates to buy some time, they are just thinking about staying in power, they don’t care about the crisis. Bush has been dealing with this almost the same way he dealt with Katrina.

How pathetic that Obama has to be summoned by President Bush to go back to Washington to do his job as a United States Senator. I think Senator Harry Reid was correct when he said that Obama was not needed there. Obama has never been one to reach across the aisle and make compromises on controversial issues. He just votes the way the Democratic establishment tells him to vote.

I can’t beleive how weak Obama is- no leadership qualities whatsoever!! The economy is one hundred times more impportant than a debate. There are over 4 weeks still, plenty of time for 3 debates and even Town Hall meetings if Obama was brave enough to so attend.

Absolutely NO NEED to postpone the debate on Friday. Sure, it would be uselful for both candidates to attend a meeting at the WH. However, the people who would have to hammer out the bailout plan are already in place and really do not require either candidate to be present. They can provide input through the heads of their respective committess and then do their business as usual. So for McSame to cancel all other events in order to be there is a farce! Debates should go on so that we can get a better idea of each candidate’s stance direct from their mouths.

MCCAIN HAS BEEN M.I.A. IN WASHINGTON SINCE APRIL!
We are now 10 days into this economic crisis…why show up on Washington now, McCain?
TO ALL OBAMA HATERS, HERE’RE THE ANSWERS:
PREFACE: I am a deregulator. “I don’t know much about the economy.”
1. The fundamentals of our economy are strong (repeated 16 times)
2. Untimely release of article “written” by McCain to open up health care to the free market just like the banking system
3. Word spreads that McCain wants to privitize social security
4. Fire Chris Cox
5. No AIG bail-out
6. Bail out AIG
7. Role out an economic fix derived in 24 hours without knowing all the facts that virtually EVERYONE ignored
8. No commitment to meet with a NATO ally (spells trouble for the foreign policy debate)
9. Polls are not looking to good now that most have concluded that Palin is a political ploy
It did not take a Presidential Summons for Obama to go to Washington. He simply said he was going to attend the debate. He never stated he wasn’t going to Washington. You guys are just mad that McCain made yet another mockery of himself. And at the end of the day, McCain still has to show up for the debate that he’s clearly trying to avoid.
“Country First” is a political slogan. Being in a prison camp, hanging around Washington for nearly three decades as a deregulator and graduating at the bottom of your class is not a qualifier for the presidency!
Let’s see if McCain can keep up with 21st Century multi-tasking.

Perhaps I will vote for Nader!

McCain doesn’t need to go to Washington because he has nothing to add. If he thinks the economy is “fundamentally strong” then what could he possibly add? Stop playing politics with the American Taxpayer, McPander.

Presidents need to be able to handle multiple things on the same day. The debate is only a few hours anyway, and as others have stated, there are airplanes. Since McCain has stated he doesn’t know much about the economy, it’s obvious he can’t be a lot of help so they wouldn’t miss him if he took a couple of hours away and participated in the debate.
I have to say that his trying to get out of the debate makes him look bad, much like keeping Palin away from the press. It only makes us wonder more about them. Are they really sooo incompetent that they can’t even handle a debate or the press?

“President Bush Invites Obama to DC to Work on Bailout Bill” ABC news web page headline
What a sad, misleading headline on ABC’s web page. The President invited both McCain and Obama to the White House. Why did ABC try to mislead the public by trying to portray Bush as inviting only Obama, as if Obama was being summoned to save the day? Anyone from ABC have an answer to this question? When conservatives talk about malicious, biased reporting, this is what they are talking about.

THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO SUSPEND NOVEMBER 4 ELECTIONS ON THE EXCUSE THAT THERE WAS NO TIME FOR DEBATES WITH THEIR INDEFINITE SUSPENSION OBAMA, NOT RELYING ON PUBLIC FINANCING, WILL RUN OUT OF FUNDS IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT A JULY ELECTION!Good reasons McCain wants to suspend campaigning: He is down in the polls; this economic mess looks like its the Republicans fault this will put him in his mind in a disadvantage if any debates were held before this bailout matter is resolve (this of course could take several months..for McCain to be able to get in a more favorable position with the situation looking less ugly; He needs time for troopergate to be resolved and swept under the carpet, with personnel board investigating and the legislature expect the personnel board Republicans are having to investigate to be dragged out and prolonged; the ultimate goal is to get Obama to suspend his campaign, loose his momentum, loose money and be flat broke not depending on public financing as McCain. This is so cute it stinks. Moreover, it is unconstitutional to delay the elections and this would be a first in history on a lame excuse. Bailout can be resolved without McCain physical presence at the Senate – we do have telecommunications, cells, videos, emails, and his representatives to convey his position on any and all issues without him being present. This is straight out of Karl Rove’s book. America should insist the elections, the debates go on as scheduled.

Hey, I like the ones about “why does Obama have to be ‘summoned’” to Washington to work on the crisis! This about a President who hasn’t taken center stage yet on this crisis (No “mission accomplished” today, folks) and about a Republican candidate whose original take was, “The economy’s in good shape.”
And no worry that Obama will have trouble making it back for the debate. Bush can’t go more than 5 minutes without cue cards on any subject anyway. It will be a short meeting.

Bush only invited McCain to be polite. Bush knows that McCain is a dunce when it comes to the economy. Why? Because McCain already told America, for the past 26 years, that we need to Deregulate. Let the Wall Street geniuses take over our Social Security? Thank God the democrats stopped that from happening.

Let’s get real! The Bush administration is clueless on how to fix the MESS we’re in. Paulson can’t fix it because he as well as McCain, McCain’s son, Bush & Cheney are THE problem. Irresponsible and they DO NOT care about the American people. There would have been oversight to prevent the greed when it came to Enron, but they pocketed the money too. It would have stopped Giant Golden Parachutes, but they’re getting one too! It should have stopped with AIG, Bear Stearn, etc but you can’t manage money well when THIEVES HOLD MANAGE the BANK! Get rid of the crooks in Washington and we’ll all have to help clean up the mess in Washington and Main and Wall Street!

I think Obama should really lose out after only worrying about the debate and not the country’s welfare. Obama’s unwillingness to help or put off the debate for the country’s sake is only showing that he is a power hungry and naive and does not care for the people of this country. And he’s trying to put McCain down? HA! He is only thinking of himself, and this refusal to help with this American crisis is proof. I don’t think anyone should vote for him. When there is a crisis in this country, you are supposed to stop what you are doing and do your job, even just as a senator(which Obama is getting paid for;he is not getting paid for debating). I am shocked that he has no more caring for the welfare of this country than that!
No one should even think about a debate until this crisis is settled.

Ok.. the presidential debate and the bail out bill are totally separate issues. Both of the candidates are sitting senetors in congress. Why does one senator take it upon himself to say “hey, I’ve still got a job to do while running for president” and the other senator says “he needs to be invited to washington”, then the boss calls & he so graciously accepts for umm you think doing what he was voted in to do. Debate, no debate..to me that’s a different issue. Not doing what you were elected to do…sorry I have a problem the that.

Will we see photos of him just sitting around twiddling his thumbs? Congress has been negotiating all week….why now is McCain JUST saying he needs to be there. Obama has been in talks with all the big wigs expressing what he needs to see in order for him to support the bail-out. EVERYDAY he has been in touch. Senator Dodd just said he has not heard ONE word from McCain all week? WTF. Now he wants to postpone the debates until Thursday, which just happens to be the VP debate. And reschedule the VP debate indefinitely? Are we being punked? What? Really, this is a joke right? Where is Ashton?

Obama made a stunning gaffe in his press conference this afternoon, responding to McCain suspending his campaign and the economic crisis. Obama said, “If they [Congress] need me, call me.” Wow! There could be no further contrast in leadership between these two men. McCain rolls up his sleeves and says “let’s get something done.” And Obama says “call me if you need me.”
When given an opportunity to serve his nation in a time of severe crisis, Barrack Obama decided that his own personal gain was more important.
Stunning!

i can’t figure out why the debate can’t happen in d.c…anyone?
and no, neither mccain nor obama is needed for the negotiations over this bill. neither of them is president, nor are either of them members of banking or finance committees. they should be well informed about the issues, they should absolutely be present to vote when the bill finally comes to a vote, but are they needed for this? nope.
even if they are, how does that interfere with their ability to participate in a debate that is essentially an interview for the job they are pursuing. if they really need lots of time to prepare for them, it kind of leads me to believe that maybe they aren’t going to be as honest as we might like.

Buried in that 8,000-word NYT magazine article about Obama’s economic plan is this bit flagged by Geraghty at Campaign Spot:
“If you talk to Warren [Buffet], he’ll tell you his preference is not to meddle in the economy at all — let the market work, however way it’s going to work, and then just TAX THE HECK OUT OF PEOPLE AT THE END AND JUST REDESTRIBUTE IT,” Obama said. “That way you’re not impeding efficiency, and you’re achieving equity on the back end.” He continued by saying that he thought there was some merit in Buffett’s argument.

I like how people criticize George Bush for inviting Obama to this. So you’d rather not have your hero show up?
McCain & Obama hold a ton of sway in this bill. They’re are practically the party leaders now, they can make or break this. It’s important that they show up.
I don’t know if the congressional meetings overlap with the debates. I’m fine with waiting another day or so, as long as we get the deal hammered out. You say that they can debate on friday anyway, but they really cant. It isn’t a matter of taking out a few hours. It takes a long time to set up a debate, and a long time to attend it. They would be gone for at least 4.5 hours, if they really decked it. It also takes a lot of time to finalize and unite congress to vote on anything. It isn’t a matter of multitasking, it’s a matter of time. If they could debate and make a bill at the same time, they would, but they cant.
It would be interesting if Obama showed up for the debate and McCain was in congress working on the bill. It would be an extremely risky move, but interesting.

Although I am not a Bush supporter, I do give him a lot of credit for CALLING Senator Obama to be present at the financial bail out meeting because IT IS THE PRESIDENT’S CALL to do, and NOT MCCAIN’s responsibility because he is NOT the president! PERIOD!
There is such a thing as protocol, and due to McCain’s undercut way of handling his approach to Sen. Obama by calling him, thus, agreeing with Sen. Obama to join together in a JOINT STATEMENT, but instead McCain is on the television set at a press conference MOMENTS from hanging up the phone from Obama only to RENEG on what they BOTH agreed upon TELLS THE WORLD that he (McCain) was using this crisis as a political ploy to make himself look good!
As far as I am concerned, McCain has proven himself to be LOW IN CHARACTER, and once again, President Bush has undermined McCain, in his own way, by covertly showing the world that it is Senator Barack Obama who has the decency, common sense, integrity, character, poise, and good judgement in every aspect to become the next President of the United States of America.
Despite what you may believe regardless of which party you like, or represent, it has been clearly shown that Senator Obama did the right thing by wanting to continue the debates on upcoming Friday, and to ACCEPT the President of the United States invitation to be present at the bail out meeting because to go out to Washington, D.C. ASSUMING that the people who are already present hashing out the details in Congress cannot do it without him is insulting to the members in Congress, and THAT is what McCain insinuated by PRETENDING that he gives a damn about this mess that he helped create in many ways along with his wealthy cronies!
It’s too bad that McCain could not wait for that same telephone call from the President of the United States of America – sticking to protocol of respect.
Now, since these men and women are to hash it out, tomorrow (Sept. 25th), in hopes of coming to a complete agreement on this bail out with concise and clear provisions, the presidential debates can go on as scheduled this Friday in Mississippi.

When I hold a job I show up for work. Obama never has. He has to be invited to do the job he already holds. McCain is doing his job without being told. McCain shows by doing, Obama shows by speaches. Obama will never get my vote. I have to work for my pay. He needs a special invitation. Not. Anyone who has to go to work should never vote for Obama. McCain has a better work ethic. Obama is too young, and inexperienced to even go to work when scheduled.

Julie,Obama called McCain at 8:30 am this morning. Mac did not return call until 2:30 pm he was busy meeting with Ms Moneybags DeRothschild. At 2:45pm he rushes to the press saying he has contacted Sen Obama and now wants to suspend campaigning. How deceitful!
I am a life long Republican Mom of 3. One of these candidates has shown calm, poise under these circumstances. I plan to vote for him and encourage my very republican family to do as well after I which I will switch my party affliation.
BTW watch the Palin interview on CBS so will additional reasons why not to vote for McPalin.

Here is the deal, McCain and Obama are NOT needed in Washington to deal with the ecomonic crisis right now. And do you know why? Neither one has been on Capital Hill in such a long time, that they are not on the committees in which they could possibly have any input into what happens with the 700Billion. Please, Use your time to understand the facts before you begin to spew seeds of discord.
And as far as the Bush invitation to the White House, can anyone really know what Bush’s motive is? Has anyone been able to understand and read his actions in the last eight years? If you can, why haven’t you enlightened the rest of the country?

This is a scheme by the Republicans to deflate Obama and the Democrats. Another chapter from the Karl Rove Playbook. Neither McCain nor Obama have been involved directly in these negotiations. There are plenty of well respected people sorting and working this out. They don’t need either Presidential Candidates there. Are they also going to get Palin in there too? After all, she has “executive experience” and can tell the ton of experts there how to do this. She can always point out to her bridge to nowhere and her road to nowhere. Just a little lipstick should do it. What a sham this election is looking like. Another attempt to trick America.

A plan for a bailout should have came long before now. Why do Obama and McCain need to suspend their campaign events and the first debate the nation has long awaited? They were not there from the beginning, why all of a sudden it’s imperative to be there on Friday. I believe that McCain is trying to buy time, he is not ready to face this Presidential debate, and can’t get to Obama notes to prepare for this debate. What a silly move, McCain releasing to the media that he is suspending all campaign advertisement until a bailout plan has been agreed upon. A great deal of funds has been greatly contributed into the preparation of this event and it should continue as planned…. Oomph! Perhaps McCain is trying to tell us indirectly that he has decided to withdraw from this race… It’s time for a change….
A GREAT CHANGE IS ABOUT TO COME, THE OBAMA CHANGE-2008! Everyone, please I urge you to go out and vote, your vote is extremely important and it does count. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!

I can’t believe that anyone would buy the idea that McCain is putting the country first by suspending his campaign. 1. McCain knows that he is expected to do very well in this first debate, since it is about foreign policy. 2. McCain also knows that it is likely that Congress will approve some bailout plan this weekend. So, if he and Obama debate on Friday night and McCain does as well as expected, then the press will announce late Friday night that he won the debate and did a magnificent job on it. 24 hours later, the headlines will be “Congress approves a bailout plan”, and suddenly McCain’s winning debate is long forgotten, and the focus returns to the economy which is Obama’s strength. So, this had nothing to do with putting country first, it was an excuse by McCain to reschedule a debate that he will likely win to a time when it won’t be overshadowed by the economic crisis, and so he’ll be able to get the most bang for the buck on a great debate. I also found it interesting to hear Bush announce that he invited McCain and Obama to meet tomorrow afternoon with congressional leaders in DC – not in the morning but in the afternoon. Gee, could it be that he is trying to help McBush, oh I mean McCain get the debate delayed?

The American people are entitled to timely Presidential debates so that the candidates can be properly vetted. This is part of an ELECTORAL PROCESS that John McCain, and the Republican party in general, has no respect for. And now he involves BUSH in this scheme?
The economy is not in a ‘crisis’. The economy is suffering from two decades of Wall Street’s CRIMINAL behavior, facilitated by the deregulation that the Republican sought for their cronies. McCain is a using a sham to deflect attention from a debate he will most certainly lose Friday night. The debate will happen despite the interference the Republicans are desperately trying to run.

First The Savings and Loan and Now
Wall Street !!!!!!!
From the Wikipedia. Unlike McCain’s Lies, This is The Truth. Same McCain, Different Failure. Our Country cannot afford McCain/Palin.
McCain and Keating had become personal friends following their initial contacts in 1981,[10] and McCain was the closest socially to Keating of the five senators.[21] Like DeConcini, McCain considered Keating a constituent as he lived in Arizona.[18] Between 1982 and 1987, McCain had received $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.[22] In addition, McCain’s wife Cindy McCain and her father Jim Hensley had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators. McCain, his family, and their baby-sitter had made nine trips at Keating’s expense, sometimes aboard Keating’s jet. Three of the trips were made during vacations to Keating’s opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay. McCain did not pay Keating (in the amount of $13,433) for some of the trips until years after they were taken, when he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln.[6][23]
Just as the Savings and Loan Failed, so now does Wall Street and the Mortgage and Banking Institutions. McCain can’t try and blame Obama for the 1989 problem. He has been responsible for so much failure in this economy. Treating Wall Street Like they did the Savings and Loan.

This is the guy who was against the AIG bailout on Monday, for it on Tuesday and wasn’t sure on Wednesday. This is the man who said as recently as last month that he was a deregulator, not a regulator. This is the man who in a magazine article this month said that the health care system should follow the model of Wall Street and let the market decide the price. All of these “wise” observations in just the last few weeks.

Much of the power of the McCain in the Bush party, starring Sarah Palin lies in the perverse truth it tells about the warped well-being it creates and look at its latest creation.
Sen. McCain the 21st century Davy Crockett. Remember the Alamo!

Hey Chattyway, you’re the one that looks like a dummy. The Frank Raines connection is no connection at all much less “personal economic advisor.”
How bout this one. Proven fact. It’s all over the news,(or do you not even read the real news?) McCain’s campaign manager, Rick Davis was on the Fannie and Freddie payroll as a lobbyist until last month! He or McCain can’t run away from that! The evil Freddie and Fannie was paying your boy’s campaign manager even while he was running McCain’s campaign!

I am not a politically smart person but I know one thing for sure…..it is ridiculous for people that work for $7.oo per hour to be paying 4 plus dollar a gallon for gas, nearly 5 dollars for a gallon of milk, over 5 dollars for a box of cereal and then the big shots that are suppose to look out for our best intrest are worried more about helping companies that has brought this entire situation about themselves when they should have the US citizens as their priorty. I realize that this can filter down to all of us BUT if they would have been concerned about us real people who bust there butts everyday to try to be able to come somewhere close to making the payments we have committed to possible this entire mess would not have came about. People first??? It would be so nice for someone to actually say it and mean it. The people in DC have no clue what it would be like to live on a paycheck of $300 a week, or less. I do not think that they care either. If they did maybe the next president and/ or all elected officals would forfiet even half their salary. They still cost us with their expense accounts I am sure. I do not know who I will vote for this year as neither has convienced me that they are sincere and further more they neither have elaborated as to just what their “plan ” is for anything. They say I have a plan……IF they do then lets hear it…..I do not think they do they have and idea of what they may would like to do but a plan…..No and if they do let the people hear and make a decision from what they hear out of their mouths. Too bad we can not start this campaign over and see if we could better our choices……

Obama went to Florida to prepare – at the luxury Belleview Biltmore golf and spa resort in Clearwater. he didn’t want to have to go back to washington to do some real work. but looks like bush is having the meeting that mccain called for and poor obama will have to stop cramming for the debate at the resort and go do some real work, the work he was elected to do.
Senior advisers David Axelrod, Anita Dunn and Robert Gibbs are among the staff helping, with Washington lawyer Greg Craig playing the role of McCain.
as someone else commented “I wouldn’t want to give up the luxury Belleview Biltmore Golf Club for 3 days either. No wonder he balked.”
but all you who have contributed lots of your hard earned $$ for his campaign, send him some more so he can reschedule his biltmore spa stay! he needs more more more.

Obama should bring Freddie Mac’s CEO Raines, his personal economic advisor. I’m sure he could shed some light on the bailout, to the tune of 90 million.
For the Obama followers, 90 million is a 90 with six zeroes.

Look it up folks! McCain has missed 412 votes this year! Obama has missed just over 300. McCain has been off the job more than Obama! lol
C’mon repub diehards! You’re losing your touch! You’re starting to sound shrill and whiny! You’re getting desperate just like your candidate. What is going to be your next little trick to try and muddy the water and get America’s attention off the real issues of this campaign. When Bush was running, you sounded confident, self-assured. You have McCain running this time and you’re sounding panicked!
What will be McCain’s next move? Buy a pony and say he’s going to make him secretary of state if he’s elected?

Let’s face it the people we send to Washington are for the most part self serving bums. Who after one short term recieve a pension for life and you expect these bums to care about us?
McCain did the right thing and of course the bums from the democratic side shock that anyone would put their country first said he is doing for any number of reasons which were all bad.
All Obama can do is talk about what others do for he has never done anything and the media is giving him a free pass on THAT FACT.
Some day our government will be run by people who actually crae about Americans – but McCain can’t do it alone but he can make us all think.

When the government owns your mortgage after this bailout, you can bet the shaft will be placed deep and brutally. I’m kind of impressed that Bush included both candidates. It also makes McCain’s “suspending” his campaign kind of pointless. This is being made into such a big deal by McCain. The crisis is a huge deal, but McCain has been away for so long ( and Obama too) that to barrel in like a super hero just isn’t realistic. He didn’t need to try and cancel the debate, he didn’t even need to suspend his campaign…unless he is running low on money. Drama, Drama, Drama. Go to Washington state your opinion be on call, vote, and then head off to Mississippi.

Mccain and Bush are using the Iraqi withdrawal timetable to influence the election. What kind of ploy were they using to bait the Georgian/Russia conflict to influence the election? Why are they hiding Palin? What’s behind Mccain’s backout of the debate? What’s behind Bush’s invite to a special meeting? Mccain claims he doesn’t know anything about the economy, so what would be his input? Bush/Mccain, voters are skeptical of your underhanded tricks. We’re watching you. Yes, John McCain is an honorable man, if honorable means someone who helped create this financial mess, if honorable means someone supported going to war with Iraq to destroy their country to try to take their oil with the lives of US young people and many thousand more innocent bystanders. Yes, my friend, John McCain and Sarah Palin are both honorable politicians distorting the facts, lying when it is convenient, and hiding out when the race gets too hot to handle because they indeed helped start the FIRE. McCain, come out from behind this financial mess you helped create and face the nation – if you really are an honorable man. Of course your definition of honorable man has taken on new shades of yellow.

I hope Bush explained to Obama, “present” is not an acceptable vote in congress. If Obama needs help, he can confer with Senator Hillary Clinton or Senator John McCain.
Posted by: Julie 1969 | September 24, 2008, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm
John McCain’s connections to the two mortgage companies are more numerous. His campaign manager, Rick Davis, headed the Homeownership Alliance, an advocacy group for the two lenders. His close adviser, Charlie Black, is a long-time lobbyist whose firm represented Freddie Mac.
Two of McCain’s bundlers, supporters who help raise large amounts of money for the campaign, have ties to Fannie Mae. Robert H. Holt is a lobbyist for the firm, and Wayne Berman is managing director of Ogilvy Government Relations, which also represents the company.
A third McCain bundler, Geffrey T. Boisi, is a director of Freddie Mac.
Both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have spent millions on lobbying; they each number among Washington’s top 20 lobbying spenders.
Not to mention most importantly for those of you who think he puts country first…he is the most absent senator in congress. Obama and Clinton had a loooong drag out race, and Obama still showed up more than McCain. I hate to burst your bubble, but get real.

If he had done this last week when the news broke out about a bail-out then it would have been a great thing to do. But right now I think its too little, too late. Last week the fundamentals of the economy was strong for McCain. Now I guess he seems to realize that we are in an economic crisis.

anyone who is aware of Obama’s anti-American, racist and communist connections could ever think of voting for him. The mainstream media has so far been able to cover up many of Obama’s communist and anti-American connections, but more and more are coming to light. Investors Business Daily has an excellent review of all of Obama’s communist and anti-American connections. Instead of covering Palin’s tanning beds and the number of cars McCain has, the media needs to start telling the American public the truth about Obama.

Obama is the most undeserving, sleaze candidate to run for President in my lifetime. His associations with Davis, Wright, Ayers and Rezko should be enough to cause every American to utterly reject his candidacy. Instead, a majority of Democrats nominated Obama for the office of President. This is very troubling.
How can a man who openly associates with Marxists, racists, terrorists and criminals be considered by many to be an agent of hope and change? Change into what? Zimbabwe?
In my thinking, too many American voters think the USA is indestructible. That we can take a wild Friday evening drunken stroll next to the abyss without fear. We could never stumble and fall. If Obama is elected President, I believe this country will have taken a fork in the road from which it may never find it’s way back.

I understand your point, because I was a Clinton supporter, and I wondered some of these things myself. Then I also wonder why I saw no Black people at the RNC. I wonder why McCain and fellow Repubs cancelled speaking engagements with minorites. I wonder why McCain didn’t support MLK being honored with a holiday. You see…race is a difficult hurdle in politics. For whites, for blacks for everyone. If McCain is perfect then vote for him, but we all know he isn’t. Just as the great depression of the 30′s this was caused by nothing but greed. From the CEO making tens of millions while his company goes in the red all the way down to people buying houses they can’t afford.
Everyone wants something better than they have but they aren’t willing to earn it. Everyone wants to blame the President and to a lesser extent the Congress. Both are to blame but so are the rest of us.
Idiots buy houses they can’t afford, greedy salesmen sell them. Stupid bankers loan money on variable rate mortgages they know can’t be paid back. Builders build upscale houses they are now stuck with instead of affordable homes that people can buy and pay for.
Then there are the imports while we export next to nothing. Illegal aliens taking low skill jobs away from Americans and sending the money to Mexico instead of spending it here.
Let’s not forget paying for a war and all the social projects, Hillary’s Woodstock museum and the Democratic health care bill that would have given medical aid to illegal aliens making up to $60k per year.
No one thing caused this mess except the root cause, greed.

My friends dont be fooled. Sen McCain just doesnt want to go down without a fight. The story of country first does not stand ground. Sen McCain owns 13 cars several of the are foreign made. That’s not country first when you undermining american workers. Sen McCain chose Gov Palin as his running mate to help him win. Todd Palin is a member of Alaska independence party. That’s not country first.
Sen McCain just does not respect Sen Obama. He thinks he’s entitle to the presidency. He negotiated change in debate format to protect Gov Palin. Now he’s trying to find an excuse not to report to the American people in the first debate even if he’s spent two months away from the media and not answering any question. What an arrogant politician. He thinks he calls the shot and therefore he cant fall behind in the poll, now he wants to postpone the whole election and when it is convenient, when he’s likely to win, he will come back. He’s running out of time. We can understand. Looking at a mirror he doesnt see with what face he can come back in 2012 to ask for votes. Too sad sen McCain, we cant work back time.
Bad highschool student looking for all kind of excuses to skip an exam: not this time, not this year. If you’re intellectually challenged, we are sorry for you Sir. Obama, freshman senator, attended congress 53 times in 3 years. He has a history of hard drugs, weed and alcohol. His political career was initially started/funded by Resko and Auchi, convicted criminals. Attended a racist anti-american church for 20 years… Who in their “wright” mind would consider voting for this change artist?
Jerome in GA – apparently more than half of Americans who seriously wants a true leader not like “master of political gimmick McSame” and it’s ignorant people like yourself why i’m so proud to be a FORMER republican now fully supporting Obama.

Jerome, every time I see comments like that it reminds me of the suitability of one George W. Bush. The resumes are about the same.
Every time I hear Rush rave about McCain I remember all the snide comments he’s made about McCain from 200-2007 and especially the temper thing. He, Rove + a lot of the other useful idiots now know they will have to swallow hard and vote for the guy with the R next to his name. In Rush’s case he can always spit it out later.

Crazy. I’m voting for Obama, but he is just a nominee. Bush needs to take care of his own business and not try to get someone to take responsibility for it.
If you’re smart, Obama, you will stay far away from Bush.

Henry, McCain has had his own minister issues. He certainly hasn’t reached out to any minorities, so he’s not in the position to talk about “racism” nor is the Republican party. As far as scandals go, how about the Keating five?

The American people expect the debate to take place and have been looking forward to this event. No excuse for this debate to be cancelled.
Posted by: soccermom | September 24, 2008, 11:52 pm 11:52 pm
McCain was dealt with today by Obama. McCain attempted to “set the agenda” for both of them. Obama assumed leadership and said “Thanks but no thanks” which was smart as they are not needed in Washington. The dem’s were already settled.
McCain was then stuck so his pal Bush used his authority as Pres to schedule a meeting and get Obama to play along. Obama had already stated he would go to Washington if called in his speech earlier. Further, you do not tell the Pres no to a meeting as a matter of respect for the USA.
Bush/McCain are just trying to politicize this economic travesty. Just another example of McCain’s close friendship to Bush who he publicly disowns…
Survey USA shows that only 10% of the public want the debate to be rescheduled. The public does not want the candidates in Washington. Obama once again knew what the public wanted….McCain simply bailed out on us!
Posted by: natnicnic | September 24, 2008, 11:53 pm 11:53 pm
Obama‘s economic plan is all based on a house of cards.Once the top 5% wise up and refuse to pay the higher taxes Obama is proposing there will be zero dollars to pay for all of Obama’s government giveaway programs. Raising the taxes of the top 5%, which in main are the American business base ,will just force businesses to raise their costs, lay off people, go to greener pastures, or just plain go out of business, Obama’s other idea of handing the money over to the middle class so they can go out and buy “toasters” made in China, will just send all the good American jobs over to China. But maybe, that is what Obama is aiming for, the destruction of American business and the rise of China. After all it was Obama who said “You can’t drive your SUVs, eat all the food you want and keep your thermostat at 72 degrees all the time. I won’t allow it”

Bush invited both McCain and Obama – not just Obama. Why then did ABC highlighted Obama invitation alone? The fact is that McCain suggested meeting with Obama, President Bush and Congressional leaders of both parties in DC tomorrow. Obama rejected the suggestion, and also got Pelosi and Reid to ridicule McCain for making the suggestion. President Bush invited the same people McCain wanted the President to invite tomorrow. When he did, Obama accepted the invitation. It’s Obama who flipflopped and played politics here. Why is he being glorified?

The debates will go ahead as planned. McCain is not running away from this one and if he does, the whole nation will finally know the man is not even close to what a president should be. This is a stall tactic by Bush to help out McCain, nothing more. They saw the polls, Obama being 10 points ahead and they panicked. Now they are desperate and are trying everything in the book because Obama will make McCain look like chop suey in a debate.McCain has nothing to offer on this economic crisis and that will be the focus of this debate. All you republicans can start whinning and crying because this is over if John McCain fails to show his face at those debates. You can run but you can’t hide John Boy. You need to face the music both you and Palin. You cannot hide her no longer. America wants answers. America is not going to be denied from having these debates. Every politician who has ever ran for president of the United States of America have debated their views and plans to the people, and i’ve been around for over 50 years.America has just called your name out Mr McCain. It’s funny that just last week McCain said the economy is fundamentally sound. Now he is suspending his campaign to fix the economy? Doesn’t add up to me.
Obama has been the only candidate that genuinely cares for Americans. His plan is comprehensive and is our only hope to save us from a near depression.

This campaign “time out” is such a political ploy.
According to the Senators directly involved in the bailout proposals, the plan is 98% complete and agreed upon by the White House (per CNN).
The remaining 2% has to do with legal interventions with foreclosures.
Why is it imperative now that McCain not only cancel the first Presidential debate, but the VP debate as well?
Let me guess, the foreign policy post-debate bump will not last long when the news is all about the economy. Also, why postpone the VP debate?

Looks like some of you has forgotten this is not the first time Senator McCain has put our country first. Didn’t he suspend the opening night of GOP convention because we as a country or at least the gulf states were facing a Natural disaster called Hurricane Gustav. The last time I checked Sen.McCain and Sen.Obama are both still on the clock as Senators and getting paid for their service as senators not politicians. So should not they both be expected to put our country first our best interest. Or is Sen. Obama excused for this? Sen. McCain quotes “he had rather lose an election than a war”.This is what I call someone putting us Americans first than unlike the other side putting his politics first. Need I remind you there is only man that has ever fought for us and for our freedom that in this presidential race is SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN!!!!!!!! What has Sen. Obama done for our country and freedom?

talking about nonsense things while the

Please correct me, but did we bail
out a system with $billions that is a
glorified gambling machine? AIG bets
your money that you or your company
don’t get hurt. It invest (gambles) your
money which ever way it wants to make
more money for it’s investors. They
became greedy in putting too much of
your money in the housing market. When
the bubble burst, It ran to Uncle Sam and
asked for a loan. Since there was too much
at stake, Uncle Sam loaned them $85 Billion.
My question is, did we get a collateral like all
of the CEO, CFO, Treasurer, etc assets(mansions,
antique cars,royalties,severance packages,
retirement funds,vacation homes, yachts, etc…)?
Am I mean, heck no! If they went to a regular bank,
that’s exactly what they would want for collateral)

2. their is no need for john mccain in the congress, because he is not an economy expert. remember that he said himself that he doesn’t know as much about the economy as he should.

Greed is the cause of this. The rich and powerful proved that old adage of Lord Acton, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, in 1887. “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Political gimmick!!! Why does McCain feel the need to suspend his campaign and cancel the debate??? Especially at this time, doesn’t the American people need to know how these two candidates stand on this issue? One thing he needs to realize that if he wants to be president, there is a word called ‘multitasking’ meaning he will have to do more than one things at a time, but i guess with his age that may be a bit of a problem. And what about Palin? Why can she continue the campaign since it’s so dire that McCain reaches in Washington to say “yes’ or “no” (that’s an all dayer you know). And isn’t it the job of a VP to take over the president’s role if there is an emergency? Oh yeah, it’s Palin, i forgot.

However, past that I hope all posters do realize that the extreme opinions that are constantly posted here on top of the constant mudslinging are really are not productive ways to help all Americans make the best decision in the end. I am not saying that I am righteous or anything along those lines, I just feel it would be refreshing to hear some facts from both sides supported by reasoning that is not inflammatory. I think that would serve us much better in making our decision.
Discussion rather than bickering would be very welcome.

As they sit in one of McCain’s 9 houses and discuss how great deregulation is. The same two who co-sponsored, and got passed through the biggest deregulation bill in history. John McCain is desperate to be a President his campaign the most sleazy and shamefully ever!
I don’t have any problem in characterizing McCain .He is a Republican!
According to his own campaign, Republicans are corrupt and incompetent.
Obviously he has inside information
Senator McCain you are missing the point .What make a President is the right Judgment. Be cool like cucumber in time of crisis
First he said the fundamentals of the economy are strong (probably thinking about his wife business the 7 houses and the 13 cars!)
Then he said let change the government too many regulations. Then he said the president doesn’t do his job not enough oversight from the government. And then when he starts trailing on the pols he suspends the campaign .Or he is losing his mind or he trying to play a political poker game!
If he was so serious about the economy and he was a farsighted leader then why he pick Sarah Plain?
It is really sad once analyze why McCain select Plain for running mate. Just women’s votes!
The only criterion was how he could win this election despite the best interest of the country and the American** Remember Governor Romney spent the last year campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination and talking to the American people about the importance of strengthening our economy!**

Ohplease, If you look at the fine print of Obama’s support of businesses keeping jobs here you will see there are many strings attached. Obama believes in running every ones lives by government fiat.
Businesses will automatically stay in the US and not ship jobs oversees if it economically makes sense for them to do so. Just lower the capital gains tax and loosen up all the government regulations and businesses will be more than happy to keep the jobs in the USA.
The problem with Obama and the Democrats are that they only believe in loosening up government regulations when it helps their Rezco type buddies or their buddies in Fannie and Freddie.Obama received more campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie than any other Senator other than Dodds. McCain tried to enact more government regulations that would have prevented Fannie and Freddie from underwriting all the bad loans and, you guessed it, the Democrats were against it.
Government has already been proven to be incompetent and corrupt as evidenced by the current financial crisis the US is in. The Democrat policies of requiring banks to loan money to people who could not afford to pay for the mortgages has caused the current crisis we are in and Obama and his campaign advisers,Johnson and Raines (two former heads of Fannie and Freddie) are up to their eyeballs in the mess.

This $700 billion dollar bailout is ridiculous and I sincerely hope Congress votes no on this measure. We obviously have a market failure and our lack of oversight over the past decade has led us to this dire mess. However, everyone is acting out of panic and not thinking about the long term consequences. This bailout only benefits the institutions that got us here in the first place.
I suggest we let capitalism survive and play itself out. Institutions that engaged in poor or unethical business practices should be left to die. And those who continue to be strong will rise to the top even stronger.
Regardless of whatever happens every American will face a tough time. But I don’t think that printing extra money to cover this bailout, thus increasing inflation is the right idea. Plus our kids and grandchildren will be forced to pay for this. This disastrous measure will only hurt the everyday American, many of whom are just trying to go about their daily lives.
In addition this bailout sends the wrong message to those who flat out don’t deserve to be bailed out. And what is next? The airline, auto, homebuilders, hotel/travel, and restaurant industries. Each could claim they deserve the same due to the slow-down in the economy. When will this stop? This bailout only sets up a slippery-slope for disaster.
If Congress is so hell-bent on spending this amount of money, we have other major issues such as Social Security and Healthcare which would greatly benefit from $700 billion.
Let true capitalism thrive. Email or telephone every congressman you can to tell to vote No on this bill.

It is the greed, incompetency of the Democrats that are the cause of the current financial breakdown. Obama received more campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie than any other Senator other than Dodds. Obama’s key advisers are Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson. Both of them are up to their eyeballs in the mortgage debacle. Both Raines and Johnson have served as CEO of Fannie Mae, with Raines taking over from Johnson Raines and Johnson are the people who are responsible for what may well be the single largest government bailout in history, and both of them made millions off the collapse that are lining Obama’s campaign coffers. Not only that, Obama has had an intimate and long-term association with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (Acorn), the largest radical group in America. ACORN, pressed for the grant of mortgages to unqualified buyers, leading to the subprime mortgage mess and Fannie Mae collapse.

In response to the earlier comment on taxing the rich an additional 5%, and that causing a supposed collapse of everything we hold dear.. If you’ve ever done any traveling to countries with wide differentials between the Rich and Poor with no middle class you can understand the completely missing economies those places have. As the gap widens between America’s have nots and haves, the social issues will become greater, and the country less stable. Take a look at Venezula for instance. One day capitialist, the next a state doomed for socialist failure. What should be monitored is that differential gap. When gated communities start popping up, that should be a sign that things are not going so well in America; The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer. If you’ve been to Guatemala, they guard gas stations with shotguns because if a poor person robs a register full of cash (~$1200) that’s a years wages. Meanwhile, the costs for security become so high, the economy can never recover. If you don’t think this bailout is important to the stability of our financial markets, and you can’t look at the big picture, that’s really a shame. It directly relates to the comments I just made. Once people don’t want to loan you money (Insert Middle Class and Lower Class here) because it can’t be backed, sold or insured, your kids are not going to college, and your kids will rent forever. The rich will get even richer, and the poor even poorer. Take a look at Turkey. No one in the middleclass can afford to own property; no one will give loans except to the uber rich, because they do not have a system to back the lenders. Think long and hard about quick knee jerk reactions to “those greedy bankers, etc.” and think more about the guy next door with the big wheel in the drive that got into that house on an ARM and can no longer make the payments. That’s the guy that caused this; they (the greedy bankers) only failed to stop him from getting a loan. Good luck as a senator or congress person telling the american public that they support being more strict on lending requirements for home ownership; they’ll be booted by the voters. Sometimes voting for the right person requires some thought other than, gee she’s pretty, or gee he’s black, or don’t vote for blah because of some B.S. Religious garbage. In the end your religious views mean nothing when you’re deficating in a ditch and washing your clothes on a stone in a river, hoping some day that your kids wont have to do the same.

Ohplease!, In 2005 McCain co sponsered a bill that would have put the breaks on risky loans that were bankrolled by Fannie and Freddie. The Democrats blocked it. Obama received more campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie than any other Senator other than Dodds. You can spin all you want, but facts are facts. McCain was behind regulatory legislation that would have put the brakes on Freddie and Fannie risky loans. The Democrats blocked the legislation. Obama is on the take for Fannie and Freddie money and did nothing while in the Senate to introduce or support any regulatory legislation that would have helped prevent this crisis.

Dan, The Democrats did not block it. Before the elections the act was proposed. After the elections Congress reconvened and the Act fell by the waste side. McCain did not push it because he wanted to run again for office. Period.

Oh and according to most of you here who are against Obama because of who he once associated with. In that case when I post this….John McCain’s connections to the two mortgage companies are more numerous.
…It must mean that McCain supported the deregulation of Wall Street as well.

McCain/Pailn ’08
Heres some interesting reading for you:
We have an opportunity in the next decade to increase minority homeownership and significantly reduce the minority homeownership gap…The future of the housing market rests heavily on the economic success of minorities. Homeownership is likely to grow faster among minority Americans in the next decade if all the stakeholders in the housing industry work together to make it happen. The Homeownership Alliance is working toward this goal.

Subprime mortgages were initially aimed at lower-income consumers with spotty credit. But the data contradict the conventional wisdom that subprime borrowers are overwhelmingly low-income residents of inner cities. Although the concentration of high-rate loans is higher in poorer communities, the numbers show that high-rate lending also rose sharply in middle-class and wealthier communities.

EricMN, The problem with increasing the taxes of the rich is that when the rich say enough and stop paying the taxes there will be zero dollars to pay for Obama’s TRILLION dollar government giveaway programs. Than what? Tax the next lower rung and when they say enough, tax the next lower rung of the economic ladder and than when they say enough? Well I guess we will all become slaves to some elitist government bureaucrat who will be telling us how to live our lives while we stand in the bread line waiting for a hand out.

You know what is important to every one? His Home: The place where he lives and raise his family .Then is his community where the people he greet every day lives and faces the same problems and challenges .If you organize and protect your community you protect your home, and then you sleep every night more secure What makes a President is the right Judgment. Be cool like coo camber in time of crisis. Not have 7 houses or family business hundred million dollars worth. Do not have the temper to pick a fight but the temper to fight every day make the life of the community around you better.

It’s interesting people are focusing on wasting time in legislating away things like $5M bonuses, when theres a $700B gorrila in the room. When you go into the doctor and he says “Oh, I see here you’ve got terminal cancer; that makes you eligible for the free manicure kit in the gift shop downstairs” Are you seriously going to remember that on your way to elevator? This talk about bankers, greed, evil CEOs and the alike is just a “Hey look at the shiney thing in my hand over here” trick to keep you from thinking about important things. Reject the manicure and keep focused. Remember, the city just got nuked; does it matter that the catbox is dirty?

Joe Biden was chosen for VP, for his honesty free spirit and his experience!
He’s supposed to make a point when is needed. Sarah Plain was chosen for the position after only one meeting .The decisive factor was only the women’s vote and the prerequisite to be the John McCain cheerleader. She makes only scripted interviews and has very thin Resume. Sarah Plain VP? Thanks but not thanks

Nowhere near to help the American people with a real economic change
Nowhere near to bring troops home safely.
Nowhere near to build America’s independence from oil.
Nowhere near to help the 95% of the American families.
Nowhere near to help the entrepreneurs and working families to keep jobs in America.
Nowhere near to provide the medical care reform for the American people and the Veterans who they are not fought for the red and blue states of the electoral map

foreclosure,
I fall into that bracket which would incur “additional taxes”. I fortunately live well within my means, and can actually live in a Middleclass neighborhood. I own an airplane, I go on frequent vacations, etc. We live in a world economy; there are few places worth re-locating to that have more attractive tax rates than America even with a 5% hit to the top bracket. We have #1 A good reliable legal system, #2 a good education system (by world standards), #3 relative safety (See remarks earlier about disparity of wealth). Sure, you could find a nice evolving market like Croatia, or other eastern bloc countries to move to. Keep in mind, you’re not going to want to re-learn a language, and your boat and house will get broken into on a weekly basis because those places still have large disparities in wealth. Do a quick check where a CEO would suddenly pack it in and re-locate… UK, no good. Germany? Not on the east side…. Russia? Good luck with that.. China? Get your bribes ready.. Sweden? You think +5% more is high… Canada? Guess what you cant depreciate that $2M home loan. Mexico? Nope. Too unsafe… Tell me where these alternatives are that would allow a business owner to pack it up and re-locate themselfs, their families and their business… Look, we have 300M people here in this country and if we didn’t import another set of plastic dice, or counterfiet pills, there still is a market. If I leave, someone else will take my spot and make a go of it. If America were a 1M person market, with an unstable government then raising the tax 5% would cause a mass exodus of wealth. Otherwise,… please.

Linda,
I agree people should be held accountable. Unfortunately these investigations take years to complete and are very technical in nature. We’re talking about a derailment of a train filled with toxic chemicals here. Do we want to sit and discuss the possibility of the train engineer texting, or maybe get some crews on that spill and start moving people to other hospitals. My point is, that the media and press are focused on the shiny bits, and not on the thing that matters here. How about doing a story on what a post meltdown financial system world would look like for 5 different families of different backgrounds, ABCNEWS?

Ohplease! | Not so fast.
Ohplease! Not so fast.
1)It is on the record that Obama did nothing to introduce or support any legislation that would have regulated Fannie or Freddie in any way which is what is at issue. It is also on the record that Obama received more campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie than any other Senator other than Dodds.
2) It is also on the record that John McCain forcefully supported regulating Fannie and FreddieL In 2006 John McCain released the following memo in support “of the bill.Sen. John McCain [R-AZ]: Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.
The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
Quick Info
S. 190 [109th]: Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005
Last Action: Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably.
Status: Dead
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.”
3) Dodds was the ranking Democrat on the Committee that killed the bill and was the primary Senator behind blocking the bill.
Gotcha. I win.
P.S. Stop trying to divert attention from the crux of the issue. McCain was solidly behind Fannie and Freddie regulation. Obama was no where to be found except for the fact he was on the take for a lot of Fannie and Freddie money. And your behind this guy? Unbelievable.

Obama’s economic plan is based on the assumption American business will just keep humming along and turning over all their hard earned dollars to Obama and his corrupt Rezco type buddies. McCain sound like some really bad bosses I have had in the past. They don’t have a clue as to what is really going on in the company, but then they try to step in at the last moment and act like they are in charge.
At best he would be considered a micro-manager that has no hope of doing more than one thing at a time with the whole country waiting on him to solve one problem before we can move on to the next. At worst, he is a micro-manager who knows nothing about what he is managing and his decisions are always knee-jerk reactions.
Think about the worst bosses you have ever had. You think to yourself, “Why does this man have this job? Who put him here? Who really thinks he is doing this company any good.” Then imagine that really bad boss running the country. This is John McCain.

Now Obama, the one who would not tell anyone where he stood on the bailouts, since he sees where this is heading, says that Bush and the congress is “coming around” to what Obama originally said about the bailouts. Just like I predicted, he was waiting to see where it was heading, and then say “I told you so.” He is trying to take credit for being the one with the foresight on this issue, when in fact, it was McCain in 2005 who foresaw a need for the regulations. And it is downright dishonest and indicative of that typical politican, Chicago thug style of opportunism for Obama to pretend like he was perspicacious on this. Folks, Obama is a downright deceiver.
On that note, I got a flyer in the mail from the Obama campaign in my mailbox today, and it was filled with lies about how that Obama is a “Washington outsider,” how that he is free from lobbyist money, while McCain is supposedly completely beholden to oil, etc. Typical garbagge crap.

At best Obama would be considered a absent without leave manager that has no aptitude for making any real decisions and would never get his hands dirty trying to solve a problem. Obama does not make any decisions, heck, Obama votes present most of the time and without a teleprompter at his constant side it is all hmmm haa hmm hmm. I thought the US had “57 States” or “my muslim religion” One gaffe after the next.

From the LA Times today.
What the pessimists ignore is that the fundamentals of the U.S. economy remain strong. Indeed, the World Economic Forum has ranked the United States as the world’s most competitive economy for the last two years. (The new survey comes out next month.) Its statistics show that per-capita gross domestic product in the U.S. consistently has grown faster than in other developed economies since 1980.
Looking deeper at the causes of American competitiveness shows that we score especially strongly not only in domestic market size (No. 1 in the world) but also in such areas as time required to start a business (No. 3), venture capital availability (No. 1), the cost of firing an employee (No. 1), ownership of personal computers (No. 2), university/industry research collaboration (No. 1) and quality of scientific research institutions (No. 2). The availability of venture capital might be affected temporarily by the market turmoil, and we should worry if Democrats gain control of both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue in November because they might exacerbate what the survey found to be the two most “problematic” issues for doing business in the U.S. — high tax rates and cumbersome tax regulations.
But whatever happens in the next few months, most of the other advantages that have been powering the U.S. economy forward for decades will remain unchanged.
America’s competitors display other weaknesses that become apparent in times of crisis. As Harvard economic historian Niall Ferguson noted over the weekend in the Washington Post, while the U.S. stock market has declined roughly 18% this year, China has seen a fall of 48% and Russia of 55%. “These figures are not very good advertisements for the more regulated, state-led economic models favored in Beijing and Moscow,” he wrote.

Senator Obama was actually the one to call Senator McCain to suggest that they work together on a bipartisan agreement to solve the economic crisis. Senator McCain called him back a few hours later, and they agreed that they would work on and announce bipartisan efforts. Minutes later, Senator McCain went on TV announcing that HE was interested in bipartisan efforts to solve the crisis, but failing to mention that Senator Obama had come to him with the idea. I know that both sides act in ways that are not so honest from time to time. They are still politicians after all, but it still shocks me when it happens. Senator McCain seems to have been on a roll with the shady moves lately…

This almost seems like a conspiracy. The Republicans here cry socialism but all that’s really happening is bad debts that companies don’t want is getting dumped on the government to dispose and not for free, apparently to the tune of 1 trillion dollars when all is said and done. It’s got nothing to do with running a company or running health care or running a railroad, socialism is not the arguement. It’s taking over loads of crap at a cost for disposal at our expense. And this seems oh so convienient, to lock up all the funds of the government now, on the eve of an election. The wealthy involved will get to save their arses, pretty up their balance sheet, and get away with murder, meanwhile the next administration will have thier hands completly tied. They wont be able to impement any new programs, they wont be able to implement new energy solutions, they wont be able to implement health care reform or immigration reform, they wont be able to do anything. Status quo for four more years. Who benefits the most from this bailout and this keeping the status quo? Wealthy wall street stock brokers, speculative finance corporations, insurance companies, and especially oil companies. I’m not normally a conspiracy theorist, but this sure looks like the perfect way out for the above said entities to make out like bandits and avoid change at the expense of all us little people, at the expense of YOU!

Bush and congress already worked out a plan to help struggling homeowners, it was set to go into effect in Oct. I believe so anyone struggling to pay their mortgage could go and refinance with the FHA. All the crap that congress wants to put in here now is just for political showboating. They had a clean bill, one that wasn’t full of pork and regulations that they don’t even know what the effect will be but congress has to pretend that they are working for us. What a joke. Kind of like Pelosi’s bait and switch drill bill. Drilling is ok as long as you don’t drill where there is oil.

Scotti,
I completely agree with you. However, if I get relieved of my wallet, I know I can just work another day to re-fill it. What’s on the horizon isn’t my wallet getting stolen, but my eyes gouged out, and my hands cut off. It’s unsavory thought to fork over $700 to save my limbs, but the alternative is pretty darned grim. You can bet that eventually people will get their just rewards for skirting the rules that caused all this; it’ll just take time… There was an interesting suggestion in the F.Times today from a guy in singapore. He suggested the government just use the normal markets to buy up shares in these iffy companies and that would screw all the people who shorted the stock in the process.
Along with the buyout should be legislation allowing the government to charge at least the interbank rate on those home loans, and force people to pay for their mortgages. Home owners get rate they can afford, government puts most of the cost of bailout on the people who caused it. Once people stop getting forclosed on they’ll spend more money at Walmart and make China Happy… After all, they’re saving to send a man to the moon…. Pony up for another chinese plastic laundry basket or two!
Problem solved.

McCain asked Obama to come to Washington with him to work on this economic crisis.
Obama refused, saying it wouldn’t seem presidential because a President should be able to handle more than one thing at a time.
(Multi-tasking?)
Some think Obama is afraid of making a wrong decision in the Senate bcause it might ruin his political chances.
In fact, it had once been suggested that he cared more about winning the election than he did about losing the war.
I think that synopsis might have been spot-on!

Why Obama keeps insisting on holding the Presidential debate on Friday? Is getting the debate going more important than the bailout plan? Afterall, postponing it several days till next week won’t change the election result.

Hey you know what instead of taking this 700 trillion dollars and giving to the greedy bankers so they can line there pockets with why dont we pay every ones mortgage and help the poor. I mean think about it that way people would have money to buy cars and other things that will help the economy instead of giving it to bush’s friends so they can continue driving expensive cars and live in big houses and eat at expensive restaurants. Even better why dont we take a bunch of the senators and congressmans perks as far as limos and plaines and other stuff that we as tax payers have payed for.

Obama: unfit to lead, Biden was right about Obama.

The Republican Party in the need of urgent reform because is out of touch with the everyday life of the American people.
Americans want answers to they problems they want better healthcare they want better pay they don’t want just change because that sounds good on election time, they want change from the Bush policies. This election is not only about some bridge in Alaska it is about all the bridges and roads in all of United States because they are all crying out for repairs and maintenance. This is because for the last 8 years the Bush and the Republicans have spent enormous amounts to build up Iraq and they have forgotten about the needs of their own country.

That’s what happens when the dems get control of congress. The dems screw up the banking system and then refuse to go to work. Obama and the democrats must hate to eat crow. Obama and Dodd, true friends of Fannie and Freddie.
This situation proves McCain is a true leader!

The buyout assets still exist; it’s just that people kicked to the office curb when their investment company went belly up have no interest in researching what the properties are actually worth. The paper still exists, the loans are still due. Look down the block…… That house that’s in pre-forclosure will still be there, but just on a government lien. It’s not $700B tossed in the dumpster, it’s more like $90B. Would you rather have a japanese market speculator profit on a slice of your neighbors house? If those securities stay on the market at such a low price for so long, eventually people will snap them up, but they may not be americans; they don’t care how many sit empty and in ruins. They’ll doze them over and sit on the land that they bought for cents on the dollar. I don’t know about you, but a neighborhood full of empty plots while people are forced to rent because they can’t get home loans isn’t very appealing.. You do remember 80s and 13% loans, right?

The banks qualified the home owners then stuck them with the ARM; just as they stick everyone with high interest rates on credit cards! Thank God for online banking – they can’t say you are late anymore and jack the interest! You can’t go in a store without being offered a credit card and 10% off! The CEO’s make millions and I’ll be damned if they need to look to the taxpayers to keep their jobs. If they would DO their jobs this crap wouldn’t happen. I think there are laws againt fraud and they should all be investigated for openers. Then we should remember the BUSH saving’s and loan bailout in the 80′s – it was called a “scandal” but clearly fraud! My 401K really took a bath on Oct/1987 when the market fell 22% – how in the heck are we supposed to get ahead or retire when Wall Street keeps screwing us out of our 401K’s? Your money makes no interest at the bank and because of inflation you have to buy now or pay more later – note, our salary is the same. This is always “wired” for the middle class to pay everything!!!
Taxes, inflation, bailouts, fraud, wars, you name it – we get the bill!
This “trickle down ecomomics” is BS! Is it too damn much to ask that people do thier jobs with some sense of decency and morality. I hope they all go to jail, they can learn to take it up the backside too!

What caused people to not have money in the first place, the high cost of oil and the high cost of food. The high cost of food because the govt. is pushing ethanol and the high cost of oil because the govt. is preventing the US oil market from expanding.

Obama is out driving the bus over his friends againa and pretending he doesn’t know his co-crooks.
“…But then the Washington Post would have to be wrong. You can’t bash McCain for basing the ad on the info in the Post and specifically identifying the Post as the source.
Here’s what the Post has today:
The McCain campaign cited a July Washington Post profile of Raines as the source for his connection to Obama. In that profile, it was reported that he had “taken calls from Barack Obama’s presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters.” In a statement issued by the Obama campaign late Thursday, Raines strongly denied having provided counsel to Obama, saying: “I am not an advisor to Barack Obama, nor have I provided his campaign with advice on housing or economic matters.”
That’s all, which I take to mean the WaPo stands behind its original reporting. If the original reporting is true, then Raines is an Obama advisor and a liar.”

What caused this problem was greed; and not greed by the rich man, greed by the commoner. There aren’t enough super-rich people in the world to cause 700B worth of damage, with a net trickledown effect of over $2T. It’s each of us, your neighbor, your sister, your uncle, someone you know. Everyone wants more. A nicer car, a faster boat, a larger house, central air. If your housing expenses exceed 30% of your intake, you’re wrong and living a lie…. Period.
I can guarantee that a CEO taking in $20M a year is not spending anything close to 30% a year on his house… Why do you think they get richer? You guessed it. They’re not serving DEBT. Guess what? If this bailout doesn’t happen, guess who’s going to form private banks and offer you a loan at 13% interest? The same guy who lives within his means and has excess capital to allow them to take financial risks…. See where this is going?

We have no choice but to infuse money to keep the economy going—-but we taxpayers are going to get screwed….Banks like Citi are already lined up with loans to the “poor” bad debt to sell to Freddie/Fannie as soon as they get the cash. The banks get rid of the people that don’t pay, and we get stuck with Freddie and Fannie owning the worse credit risks in America. Tell Washington NO, on allowing them use the bail out money to buy more “poor” loans which is code for people who don’t pay back their mortgages……………….so tax payers will never see their cash. Tell Washington NO NO NO NO on buying mortgages of people who should have never been given mortgages because of their bad credit scores and history of not paying back. Dont fall for the Poor nonsense…….

Oh, maybe he can give advice on how to respond to a hurricane in a major American city. And I am sure he can offer tons of advice on how to catch bin Laden or invade a country.
I am so glad our next President is getting advice from an expert.

An invite by Bush to Obama is ….bad, a benefit to …McCain??? I think it was wise that both attend the meeting, one of them will be President and I would think both need to be there for a first hand look at what exactly is going on.
You really have to “stretch” to see this as a benefit for anyone.

Bush should do the decent thing and resign. McCain should suspend his campaign and let Obama take charge. That is the best way to get this mess cleaned up. Bush/McCain can do a lot of damage in the next four months.

“Let me see if I understand this. Mr. Bush is offering advice on the economy to Mr. Obama. Need I even comment?”
Uh, no. Bush wisely stepped up and saw the potential for the candidates to get bogged down in their own one upmanship that nothing would have been accomplished, so invited them to test their ability to work across party lines and get a feel for what decisions one of them will have to make in the future. I see it as a way of passing the torch. Good idea, President Bush.

McCain called Bush Wednesday to suggest such a meeting that would include key players plus he and Obama. Bush called such a meeting within hours. I don’t know why it took the President to get Obama back to Washington to do the job he’s being paid to do, but I’m sure his backers here can spin it somehow.
Posted by: marylou | September 25, 2008, 8:34 am 8:34 am
McCain has a campaign plane too. Can’t he show up for the debate and then he and Obama can fly to DC, no?
Why did his aides suggest they move the debate to the day of the VP debate? Seems fishy.
If he had said it a week earlier when the stocks began diving, saying that he may consider postponing the debate to concentrate on Wall Street, then that’s one thing. But he suddenly comes and say this the day before the debate- it comes across as a political stunt, nothing more. Plus, they’ve already hammered out the basics of the bail-out plan, there’s nothing much he can contribute here.
And let’s remember, sure, Bush left the kindergarten school immediately when he heard about 9/11, but he was the PRESIDENT then, and thus fulfilling his obligations as POTUS. Now, McCain is a candidate. What are his obligations? People want to see what he has to say. As said, the debate will only take a few hours.
He has a plane, go figure.

marylou,
Obama didn’t want to inject presidential politics in it and end up stalling the bail-out plan, as Chris Dodd said McCain’s presence could.
Now, if McCain was so concerned about the economy, why is it the committee says has not heard from him at all, but has heard from Obama?
Posted by: Grey Matter | September 25, 2008, 8:41 am 8:41 am

Obama says he sees no reason why he can’t attend the debate and fly to DC.
Now, the first debate is on foreign policy. Who does this affect? The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator McCain, you know, there are people right now wearing the uniform the United States ducking enemy fire. Do THEY get a time out?
Shouldn’t people deserve to hear your take on foreign policy? That’s your OBLIGATION as a candidate. You are NOT the President right now. If you were the incumbent, that’s one thing. But you’re not. You’re not even on the Senate Banking Committee, and you said the economy wasn’t your strong suit.
How much can you help?
Posted by: Grey Matter | September 25, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am
KROFT: Why you? I mean, why do you think you would be a good president?
OBAMA: Well, I was going to get to that.
KROFT: Go ahead.
OBAMA: You know, I’m a, I’m a practical person. One of the things I’m good at is getting people in a room with a bunch of different ideas who sometimes violently disagree with each other and finding common ground and a sense of common direction. And that’s the kind of approach that I think prevents you from making some of the enormous mistakes that we’ve seen over the last eight years.
Isn’t this exactly what John McCain is doing ?
So it now takes an invitation from the President to get Obama to join in the discussions .. LOL

Neo,
McCain is not even on the Senate Banking Committee. He won’t even be allowed in the meeting until this finish everything.
At worst, he’d just complicate things. What people should be doing now is to hear his take on foreign policy. He can fly to DC easily, he’s got a campaign plane, I believe.

Granted, without the war our nation would be better prepared to dealing with this mess, however its not the war that caused the slumping housing market, bank failures, and market instability. That was caused by greed, corruption, deregulation, by all parties involved, CEO’s, Republicans, Democrats, Mortgage companies, and banks. Don’t turn this into an anti-war discussion.

The republican mantra of ”All is well” blew up in McCain’s face recently. You would think that everybody would call him on that, there isn’t really much left there to pretend that his policies will be anything than a continuance of Bush’s, and Sarah Palin (who is quite likely to become president if McCain wins) seems to be the stuff nightmares or bad jokes are made of. But I guess that some people are just too blindsided by the Bush era, or maybe God or whatever irrelevant BS that keeps their minds blank and shiny, while they are being screwed from all directions by those in power. “I guess it’s hard for people that have taken authority as truth, rather than truth as authority.”

We seem to be feeling very impotent while the red and blue puppets of our own military industrial complex, bankers take over what was not so very long ago a government “of the people for the people, and by the people”.
Now is the time for WE THE PEOPLE to take to the streets of our great cities and Washington, D.C. to take back our country. They did it in Poland, Chechoslovakia, Romania; and almost did it in Tianament Square, China.
Never before in United States history has it been so very obvious that both the red puppet and the blue puppet are dancing on the hands of the same puppet master.
Either WE THE PEOPLE throw off the oppressive yoke of those super felons; or we may as well ask our master’s what they want us to do next, how high they want us to jump, and whether they think we should have food on our tables or not.

War is peace – America (and other countries) must go to war to protect the peace
Freedom is slavery – “Freedom” is enjoyed within the system by those who obey it. Otherwise get out of the system and live in the Third World or war zones
Ignorance is strength – The people must be lied to, information must be kept secret and critics quite, in order to protect and strengthen the war effort
Not exactly the Orwellian interpretation but close enough.
