FLASH!!! Just announced!!! Palin is going to sit down next week and get grilled — I mean seriously grilled — by . . . Sean Hannity????
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!! HOW LONG ARE YOU NEWSIES GONNA LET THE McCAIN CAMPAIGN GET AWAY WITH THIS “STEPFORD VP” B.S.?
“He’s also decried the pork spending — where’s his list”
Obama released every earmark he requested during his time in the Senate during the primary campaign.
He has worked with Sen Coburn to get an earmark transparency law passed and continue to work with COburn to expand and refine that law.
Obama is not against earmarks. He wants earmakrs to be public so that if the public outcry is that the earmark is wasteful it does not go thru. Many earmarks are important for communities and are not wasteful.
The difference with the McCain campaign is he is adamantly against ALL earmarks and has now lied about his running mate taking earmarks both as governor and mayor.
Hope that clear it up for the right wingers who can’t seem to understand why their guy should get called out on his lies while Obama who has not lied does not get called out.
Posted by: Ryan C | September 12, 2008, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm
Frply,
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Obama come out and say, “Earmarks are always bad and I hate them and I have never and will never seek them for my state.” What he has pushed for is full disclosure of all earmark requests, which he himself has done and posted on his Senate Web site. McCain, himself, does not seek earmarks…but we’re not talking about McCain.
The problem here is that McCain is saying that Palin never sought earmarks as governor, and that is a lie. In fact, in fiscal year 2008, Alaska’s was #1 in earmarks per capita, averaging a bit over $500 per resident. Illinois, by comparison, ranks #37 per capita at about $30 per resident.
There’s a reason Alaskans pay virtually no state or sales taxes and actually get a check – a nice one – every year from the state based on oil profits…the rest of the the American taxpayers are footing their bills via earmarks.
Wasilla documents clearly show the city paid for rape tests prior to Palin becoming Mayor.
The city documents show Wasilla didn’t start charging until Palin fired the police chief and brought in her own police chief.
Palin won’t be able to claim it’s a lie anymore. Wasilla city documents clearly show her administration was responsible for starting to charge women for rape tests.
Have the women of the View and Jake exposed McCain’s lies. I say yes. Jake I salute you dude!

You might consider posting Palin’s budget slashes and let the public decide if she is fighting wasteful spending or just real folks in real life situations.
You might also post how the Alaska government is swimming in money from the GIANT tax hike Palin levied against big oil.
Combine the two and you come out with a Gov. who raped her corporate base and screwed her low income citizens to fill the state bank account with piles of money.
Shameful.

Jake – You are one of the most fair and balanced out there. But not saying very much. Why don’t you spend some time asking why Biden flipped to Obama’s position on drilling. What about Biden’s lobbyist son and the connections to earmarks that Biden and Obama both sought. Why don’t you ask for Biden to release all of his tax returns and earmarks – wasn’t it Obama who demanded Hillary release all her earmarks? Double standard?
Stop belittling the points and grasp the big picture. Palin may have sought earmarks, but she cut them in half already compared to her predecessor.
How about spending some time on Obama’s record? The media is a joke. I hope you all don’t succeed in getting your favorite guy elected.
I don’t understand why he keeps lying. It would be nice if we could figure out the reason why?

THANK YOU JAKE!! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! FACTS DON’T LIE!!
FOR EXAMPLE – SHE TOOK $27 MILLION FOR WASILLA AS MAYOR, BUT THE TOWN HAD ONLY 5,000 PEOPLE AT THE TIME. (SMALLER THAN MOST AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES). AS GOVERNOR, SHE TOOK $8 MILLION FOR AN AIRPORT THAT HAS 8 FLIGHTS A DAY. SHE ALSO ASKED FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO RESEARCH CRUSTACEANS!! HUH?!
IF THIS LADY IS GOING TO ABUSE OUR TAXPAYER DOLLARS AS GOVERNOR, THEN WHAT MORE AS VP?!!!
MCCAIN WAS ON “THE VIEW” TODAY SAYING PALIN WAS GOING TO FIGHT EARMARKING, BUT THE LADIES SAID PALIN TOOK A LOT OF MONEY FOR ALASKA!! HE ALSO CRUMBLED UNDER TOUGH QUESTIONS ABOUT PALIN AS A “REFORMER”. HE COULDN’T SAY HOW SHE WOULD “REFORM” THE GOV’T.
I’M TRULY FRIGHTENED THIS WOMAN IS ONE SEAT AWAY FROM BECOMING PRESIDENT.
sgd
she did not cut them in half…ugh
a lot of the earmarks were taking heat sicne the bridge to nowhere moron…
they couldn’t under the microscope of investigation and accusations that started since the whole bridge to nowhere…
but she still had the hubris to ask for more per capita than any other governor in the country!!!

Biden’s son has resigned from his lobbyist firm. Like that is supposed to make things all right???!!! The press better look into Joe’s earmarks and legislation that conflicted with his son’s work – oh wait, they’re too busy making sure that people realize that Palin didn’t “sell” her plane on ebay!
Pork barrel spending
Alaska/Palin – $506.34 per person
Illinois/Obama – $30.67 per person
Arizona/McCain – $18.70 per person
Alaska ranks 1st in earmarks, Arizona ranks last in earmarks. McCain did not choose a maverick reformer. It’s a lie.
Vanessa,
1) Obama has requested nearly $1,000,000 a day for earmarks for each day he has been in the Senate. US Senators do not have to worry about State matching like Governors.
2) Obama is still asking for $3,000,000 for a Chicago musuem that his friend is chairman of
3) Rezko, Rezko, Rezko
4) Picked a plagerist as a running mate
5) Wants change so picked the most partisan Senator of the last 25 years
6) Does not know that Russia has a veto power on the UN security council.
7) Should I go on

McCain is running an ad, and campaigning on the lie that he is against earmarks while he and Palin have a long list. Of course Obama has some too, the DIFFERENCE is that he isnt lying about it in ads or on the campaign trail.
As for comments here about Biden’s son, Senator Joe Biden is not his son. They are two different people. His son is an adult and Senator Joe Biden is not responsible for his adult son, so ENOUGH with the attempts to smear Obama or Biden, they are candidates with absolute integrity!
“Do you think its wrong for a journalist to point out a bald faced lie told by a candidate for President of the United States?”
She cut the spending.
No Ryan, I think its wrong for Jake to flip-flop. It is a situation he put himself in by losing his objectivity earlier. He isn’t the worst by any means. CNN should have put up an Obama sign in downtown Atlanta. MSNBC should go ahead and declare itself a propaganda ministry.
But Jake, based on that earlier blog a week or so ago on reporting and the wrong direction, seems to have a conscience and it’s bothering him. So maybe it’s time for him to look in the mirror and try to understand what Benet and Irving had to say, that even if they call you Ichabod, when the jury came, they came for the great orator as well as Jabez Stone. Maybe we all should, Ryan:
“I am merely an honest American like yourself – and of the best descent – for, to tell the truth, Mr. Webster, though I don’t like to boast of it, my name is older in this country than yours.”

To Mr Jake Tapper:
Why don’t you & other members of the media call a spade a spade? McCain by now obviously knows the earmark story is bunk, yet is still repeating these untruths. From where I come from there is a word for that, it’s called “lying”.
Because unless you guys actually confront him and call him on it, he’ll keep doing it (chances are he may do it anyways, but at least now he’ll do it fully knowing the media has called him a liar)
Hey Gov. Palin! If you refused the ‘bridge to nowhere” why did you not send the money back? Oh, wait I am sorry, i forgot, it is disrespectful to ask any questions to St. Sarah.
How much did she earmark to her husband’s employer? That hospital that made a 100 million profit. And his salary jumped 300% right after. Sounds fishy. We must expose this liar.
Oh wait, that was Obama!
I am honestly and truly amazed at the stupidity of the McCain defenders here.
McCain said Palin didn’t take any earmarks while governor of Alaska. That is quite simply a lie.
It is not a defense to say “Well, Obama asked for earmarks”. That has nothing to do with it. If Obama said “I didn’t ask for earmarks” and he did, then that would be a lie.
This is not complicated.
When Palin says that she was against the “Bridge to Nowhere” when in fact she was in favor of it and campaigned in favor of it, that is a lie. It doesn’t matter if Obama voted for a version of the bill that contained funds for the Bridge to Nowhere. He is not saying that he opposed it from the beginning.
Have all you people been listening to Rush Limbaugh for so long that your brains have turned to mush, or were you just born this way?
It is quite truly horrifying to me that people can’t understand written English. I suspect that many of those very same people would be very much in favor of a law in favor of “English as the National Language”……
Thanks for the letter to the McCain “we think Americans are stoopid” campaign.

Hey, the McCain camp complained for weeks about Obama getting too much coverage. Well, with Ms. Celebrity now the veep nominee, they’ve taken over the media coverage racket. Now, some of it is negative. Hard to avoid that when you lie as much as McCain has been lying lately.
Dear Jake:
A Request for Federal Funding does not equate to a request for, or receipt of, “earmarks” or “pork barrel projects”.
An earmark is a term of art that means tacking on a funding request to an unrealted bill.
A “pork barrel project” refers to a federally funded state project that’s sole purpose is simply to spend money in the beniifted state.
None of items attached to the linked “Request for Federal Funding” either ask for “earmarks” or “pork”.
Unless you view additional EPA environmental cleanup funds as such?

How many more lies do Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin have to tell before they earn the “Pathological” label?
Posted by: dave | September 12, 2008, 4:50 pm 4:50 pm
This is the PERFECT example of how earmarks are essential to small towns and rural areas – you know, the ones that the RNC devoted themselves to. There is some of what McCain would call wasteful spending in this list, but there’s also quite a bit of basic programs that a state with a relatively small tax base like Alaska may not have been able to cover otherwise.
Lost in McCain’s blustery rhetoric is the fact that if you’re going to do away with earmarks entirely – instead of merely reforming them by requiring more openness and transparency (which is, by the way, something that could definitely be done from the Senate floor) – then a viable alternative needs to be devised, because without them there will be a lot of cities, towns and rural areas in America losing basic necessities.

Dear Jake Tapper,
This is going to continue until you and your colleagues start calling McCain and Palin liars. Tough word, I know, full of ramifications. But, in this case, objectively true.
If you don’t do this then there is a good chance the US Nuclear — sorry, nucular — codes will be in the control of Palin.
Jake,
Thank you for the facts and your letter to Senator McCain. If Governor Palin has changed her mind on earmarks she should just say so and withdraw her request for 2009. If not, she [and Mr. McCain] should simply state why the earmarks are necessary.
The difficulty is this. You can’t believe the press as stories and facts continually contradict each other. In this case, your pdf attachment speaks for itself and contradicts Governor Palin’s and Mr. McCain’s statements.
One of the above commentors also provided Mr. Obama’s earmarks for 2008 which he has admitted to. He said he would no longer submit earmarks, and to my knowledge has not submitted any for 2009.
While I have not decided who I am going to vote for, on the issue of earmarks, Governor Palin and Mr. McCain loose. Simply because they are not being truthful.
You are a good writer Jake and in a position of influence. I would like to ask you to write about telling the truth. Whether it is from your fellow media, politicians, or your followers that provide comments. I am not interested in biased and inaccurate reporting, double talk by politicians, or biased, sarcastic, or nasty comments by your readers. My decision as to who to vote for will be based on supported facts and the truth.
This election is about change, [or so both candidates say]. We can make that happen only by setting the example starting with each one of us, each reporter, and each politician. Simply state accurate and supported facts, be accountable for your actions, and tell the truth. In other words, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Nothing else matters.
Thanks Jake, you are doing a good job.

Thank you for presenting the facts. Those post-modern Republicans would distort anything with their lies.
Posted by: the truth | September 12, 2008, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm
Thank you Jake.
Just to be clear-some or even most of these projects may be perfectly good investments of public dollars. The issue is, the Republicans are running as anti-pork “reformers” and lying about their record. She hired a frickin’ DC lobbyist while mayor of Wasilla. That’s major league pork action.
Also, due to oil revenues Alaska is a quasi-socialist, mooch-hog compared to the rest of the state. They get thousands in public money each year per capita. So to talk about them being reformers is just plain bizarre.
A lot of commenters here don’t seem to know the difference between an earmark and a regular appropriation. Lots of local highway and public works projects, as well as scientific research, educational efforts, and the like are paid for by the federal government through regular channels in which different needs are weighed against each other. Earmarks result from the Congress going outside these channels to appropriate funds for their own purposes. Some may be for worthy purposes, but they ought to compete through regular channels. More to the point, no one can consistently defend both Palin’s actions in requesting and obtaining earmarks and McCain’s long campaign against them. McCain says they constitute corruption. Yet he deliberately chose someone who, by his own criteria, is corrupt. He is now part of what he claims to oppose. His lust for the presidency has rendered him morally bankrupt.

LIAR THE MAN IS A LIAR.
Not an exagerator.
Not a spin meister.
Not a gaffe.
A LIAR.
Please use proper terminology.

“Care to put one of Obamas up for comparison”
Obama has done that for you when he released every earmark he requested while in the Senate quite a few months ago.
Obama (and Sen Coburn) have also created a law to make earmarks more transparent so that the public can be aware of them.
Obama has never lied and said he doesn’t request earmarks like McCain did when discussing Palin.

Q: What do you call a Bridge to Nowhere project that wasn’t pork and wasn’t an earmark?
A: The type of government spending that fiscal conservatives apparently just can’t get enough of!
Who cares about earmarks. Look at the big picture.
Under a Democrat governor Alaska was ranked 10th in taxes per person.
Under the former GOP governor and now Palin Alaska is ranked 1st in taxes per person.
The same patter of GOP leadership is everyone. Spend more, go into debt, and they deny everything.

I don’t know why anyone is blaming “the liberal media.”
This is a simple address laying down a real fact. McCain is lying about the Earmarks. There is nothing biased about presenting a simple truth.
More importantly, why don’t people want to address this truth?
McCain needs to stop hiding behind Palin’s celebrity and face the issues.

I guess that would be a no then.
Brenda – I don’t know where you live, but it doesn’t take much to find comprehensive legislation that Obama has sponsored or authored that has helped millions. Clearly, you have not been nuked by a rogue nuke in the hands of a terrorist so you can thank the Lugar-Obama Cooperattive Threat Reduction for that. If you have any military in your family, Obama hs introduced 13 bills in congress this year to address the needs of veterans and active duty personnel. If you are a minority, he has introduced 4 bills addressing discrimination. One of several of the bills he introduced between 05-07 that became law was increased breast cancer research funding. Hopefully, you do not know anyone who has been impacted by that horrible disease. Many of Obama’s bills are with Republican co-sponsorship. I can keep going, but you probably get the point.

Obama did not hold any hearings on NATO & Afghanistan as chairman of a subcommittee. But he did attend several hearings on the issue as headed by the full committee which is chaired by Joe Biden.
McCain (who claimed victory in Afghanistan 3 years ago) missed every hearing the last two years that the Armed Service committee has held on Afghanistan and he is the ranking Republican on that committee.

“Good, so why did Barry lie about his relationship with Rezko during his debate with Hillary?”
What did Obama supposedly lie about? Obama never denied he was an associate of Rezko. Chicago’s a small Big City. If you’re a politician you deal with other politicians.
Obama’s name came up in the Rezko grand jury and it was determined he had Zero to do with any of Rezko’s illegal behavior. Zero.
The Rezko crap has been debunked over and over but the so called “Liberal Media” sure didn’t give up on it. And before you bring up the house.. Ooo Obama bought an expensive house and subdivided with someone he knew. South Kenwood has been slowly gentrifying for years. It borders the extremely Expensive Hyde Park (home of U of C). Knowing the market here, his price sounded normal for South Kenwood (Hyde Park has MANY multi-million dollar houses and Kenwood has housed that likely run less than $50,000 if they are habitable.. there’s plenty of empty lots on the periphery of Hyde park too).
so.. What EXACTLY did Obama lie about?

McCain endorses and supports the blizzard of lies coming from his camapaign and from his own mouth. The man is a pathological liar. Seriously. There is something wrong with him.
Mr. Tapper:
Would you please have Charlie Gibson, Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos et al point out at least one of McCain’s numerous lies every day, using the word “lie” to describe it? And encourage your colleagues at NBC, CBS, and CNN to do the same? Because otherwise, he’s not going to stop.
McCain won’t stop lying about Palin because he knows now that he made a bad choice. If he throws her under the bus, the GOP will lose in a landslide.

Of course, unlike Obama, if you want to judge McCain’s views on technology, you can look at his record. McCain spent seven years as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, during which he was continuously involved in debates, legislation and hearings on internet issues. In 1996, he blasted the Telecommunications Act as “nothing less than an elaborate influence-peddling scheme.” In the 2000 campaign, he touted his work on the Y2K Product Liability Reform Act and the Internet Tax Moratorium Act; he has continued to fight against taxation of internet commerce. McCain also introduced legislation dealing with internet encryption technologies. Obama may think he invented internet fundraising, but in 2000 McCain’s primary campaign raised millions of dollars over the web, a fundraising surge that was essential to keeping his campaign afloat; at the time, he was on the cutting edge of such tactics. In 2002, McCain introduced the broad-ranging “Consumer Broadband Deregulation Act of 2002″, a comprehensive bill that “would prevent localities from doing anything to interfere with the provision of any consumer broadband service by limiting local governments- rights-of-way compensation to ‘direct and actual costs reasonably allocable to the administration of access to, or use of, public rights-of-way.’” McCain has continued to press for broadband access at high-tech forums during his presidential run, and chosen as chief economic advisers a pair of high-tech executives, Meg Whitman of eBay and Carly Fiorina of Hewlett Packard.”
One could even compliment Palin on getting earmarks for her citizens. That may be her job as mayor. Criticizing Obama for getting earmarks misses the whole point.
The point is that Palin and McCain have been lying saying that Palin is against earmarks when she clearly is not.
Its the lies, stupid.
I don’t think McCain lied. He only mis-spoke. What was the outrage for lies when Obama said he never opposed the infant protection bill? he was caught lying during the debate, and could not offer a reason until now.
No matter how desperate you want to paint McCain and Palin as liars, Obama is worse. His lies is no short of any of the ones in the contest.
Dear Amy,
Interesting that your notes on McCain’s record of standing up to the man ends around 2002. As everyone knows, thats when the big flip began to flop. Over the last six years he’s embraced every policy that Bush has used to ruin the country. Welcome to the new McCain!
As for Mr. Tapper — thank you for making your own small attempt to pierce the McCain/Fox/O’Reilly/Limbaugh bubble — lets hope it works. . .
Its about the lies and fabrications. John McCain has stated again and again that Sarah Palin is against earmarks, but here hers are.
Stop Lying McCain. Stop making thing up.

Palin and earmarks:
“But when it comes to earmarks, Palin is no purist like McCain.
• While she was mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired a lobbyist to seek federal money for special projects. Wasilla obtained 14 earmarks, totaling $27 million, between 2000-2003, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog group that monitors federal spending.
• As governor, Palin has asked for 31 earmarks worth $197 million for the 2009 fiscal year. State budget documents show that the state requested 52 earmarks worth $256 million for the 2008 budget year.
Several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have used a figure of $550 million in state earmark requests for the 2008 fiscal year. That information has been based on an op-ed piece written in March in the Juneau Empire by John Katz, the director of state-federal relations and special counsel to Palin.”
Jake:
Can you explain why the entire file you put out there contains not a single mention of “Palin”? It is a list of request from Ted Stevens, the senator of Alaska, with his name all over the document.
Obama hasn’t asked for any earmarks this year. Last year, he asked for $311 million worth, about $25 for every Illinois resident. Alaska asked this year for earmarks totaling $198 million, about $295 for every Alaska citizen.
Palin has cut back on pork project requests, but under her administration, Alaska is still and by far the largest per-capita consumer of federal pet-project spending.
Who’s porky pig?
Bloggers, please go to the source for candidate information, because republicans put mistatements, and outright lies on these blogs. They have a problem with the truth. Right now McCain is trying to spin his lies, trying to make lies OK. Republicans believe they can create the truth, if they repeat a lie often enough. Do not make a decision based on ranting, rude right wing talking points. Republicans here, have all kinds of schemes to misinform the American public. If you do some research, you couldn’t possibly want 4 more years for Bush/McCain. Work hard, friends- correct the lies, and don’t give up. ( Call them out!) McCain supporters are Bushites, some just uninformed, some selfish, and some born a republican, always a republican, and worse… Go bloggers, find the truth for yourself. Go to the sources. Go to the RNC and DNC websites, compare what is there with what some of these bloggers are trying to sell you. Do not believe these republican folks. They have proven they can not be trusted to tell the truth about Obama. Their biases interfere with understanding reality. What republicans really believe is republicans first, and country second.
Republicans want to make this election about personaliities, while you watch the economy crash, and you loose your job and home, and can’t afford college, or pay your bills, or manage food costs, or gas prices, and you won’t go to the doctor when you need to because you can’t afford to pay a doctor, and your teeth are rotting your mouth, because the dentist cost too much, and if that isn’t enough they the republicans don’t support man made global warming, but a devastating storm is bearing down on Texas, and…
Crack in the Petermann Glacier
Covering some 1,295 square kilometers (500 square miles) along the northwestern coast of Greenland, Petermann Glacier’s floating ice tongue is the Northern Hemisphere’s largest, and it has occasionally calved large icebergs. Between 2000 and 2001, the glacier lost nearly 87 square kilometers (34 square miles). Between July 10 and July 24, 2008, the glacier lost another 29 square kilometers (11 square miles).
Try to ignor republicans if they just want to call you names. If you talk about issues, they have nothing to say. They go away. I’ve experienced it. Republicans appear as they really are mean , bullies, angry, and uninformed.
Focus on independents. You can provide them with the information they need to make an informed decision.
It’s really not that hard to find out most of this stuff the Republicans are saying is false. Please research what these people stand for before you vote!
For all the right-wingers who can not read: The first page of the document is from Governor Palin’s office!

That accounts for 90% of them.
Wow what angry people you all are. McCain is the only candidate that promises to rid the government of Pork spending. I for one am ready for change and McCain is the only honorable experienced American patriot that can produce change. Obama has proven to be very inexperienced and he has millions of dollars of pork spending under his belt. If community activisim and minimal participation in congress is qualification to run this country then what is all the hoopla about Governor Palins experience or inexperience ? I could go on but seriously stop screaming at each other. Just vote on Nov.4 for a man that can use a computer or a man that can fly a navy aircraft in combat to defend our country. You have the right to decide because of honorable patriots like John McCain.
“Jake:
Can you explain why the entire file you put out there contains not a single mention of “Palin”? It is a list of request from Ted Stevens, the senator of Alaska, with his name all over the document.”
Page 1, Top left of page it says: “Sarah Palin, Governor” I mean this is crystal clear, black and white; it is a request from the governor’s office, Sarah Palin’s office, for pork projects.
It is simply amazing to me that Jake Tapper is the only man who is telling the truth about Sarah Palin. It is not surprising that the Republican Party and its members are lying through their teeth to win this election. Senator John McCain is basing his whole campaign on ending pork barrel appropriations and this just proves he is lying also. I am so proud of you Jake for putting an end to this deceit that this election is becoming corrupted by the greedy ambition from the Republican Carl Rove personnel.
They are no better than Saddam Hussein, or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. John McCain’s campaign chairman are all lobbyists, come on McCain…your a lying sob.
Its sad that these people just don’t get it, Americans want truth and honesty from their leaders, not a pack of money grubbing liars.
Bush lied, Cheney lied,Rumsfeld lied, Colin Powell lied but didn’t know it, and the whole Bush administration lied, so do we want 12 years of Republicans lying to us, or do we want to break this cycle of disasterous policies.
Palin is not flying this stink bomb by us, and no one believes the Republicans anymore. I Wrack is not the issue anymore our economy is and they just don’t get it, do they. Obama will break this cycle and clean up these crooks.
I’ve been following politics since John Kennedy ran for President when I was a kid. That’s close to fifty years. With the possible exception of the Bush campaign against McCain in South Carolina in 2000, I’ve never seen a campaign as reliant on distraction, distortion, division and out-right lying.
When confronted with lies, they just keep right on lying. It’s as if they believe the American people are imbeciles who will believe whatever they tell them at the moment.
If this is how they campaign, imagine how they’ll govern.
vote for the best liar this term and we can have 4 more years of fake FEMA news conferences, sketchy intellinge reports, deleted white house emails and congressional fact finding comitees galore.

Did democrats whine about O’Reilly trying to rip Obama a new one a couple of weeks ago on his show? No they didn’t. Politics is for grown-ups. Are you going to tell Putin that VP Palin won’t deal with him unless he treats her with ‘deference’? Get real and face facts about your ‘pitbull’.

Beckie,
Once again you stand corrected. If this is becoming a mean spirited country, it is exactly because of oulets like Fox News. Along with rightwing radio personalities (and I use the term loosely)like Rush, and Billy Cunningham, and Savage, and Hannity, that spit more vile, and hatred in a broadcast, than any Democrat could muster in a year. And then there are people like you dear Beckie, who insist on refering to Barack Obama, as Barack Hussein Obama, as if the prejudice, hatred, and divisiveness behind that insistance will be lost on the rest of us. You want to be a healer? You want to bring us together? Stop the personal attacks. Quit fanning the flames of racism. Criticize his policies all you want, his so called “inexperience”, his readiness to lead. I promise I’m doing the same about McCain, and Palin. But I don’t need to call McCain a racist, doddering, warmongering old fool to get my point across. Nor do I have to refer to Palin as a child neglecting, bible thumping, religious zealot, animal killing, pork barrel spending, empty headed, beauty pageant winning (sorry, runner up) bimbo. To get my point across about her.

It’s like this- That’s the way to get state funds for roads, bridges etc., just what she said she did and that’s how the states get those funds. You know this. She didn’t take the pork to the bridge to nowhere after the citizens said they didn’t want it for that bridge. She listened to the people’s voices. She can be celebrated for listening to the people’s voices. Her and McCain want to reform the pork spending because they know it’s so much wasteful spending. She axed that deal and made reforms in her state. Now, she wants to take that same reform to Washington. God Bless her for being an outsider. No wonder, we cannot get rid of pork spending when even the citizens do not understand it or by using this as a political smear or plea to help Obama when he’s losing points (now, even in blue state Michigan).
Becky -
You must only watch Fox or you would know that for the past nineteen months, every name that you mention has been covered ad nauseum by the MSM. I thought for a while that Jeremiah Wright was running for President.
On what basis are you calling an Editor of the Harvard Law Review and a University of Chicago Constitutional Law Professor a “Chicago thug?”
MSM has really exposed itself. More and more people are viewing the press the way Rush Limbaugh does – as the drive bys. MSM has always been biased, but this election cycle it has been worse.
A rigorous, adversarial press is GOOD thing for our country and democracy. What happens when we can’t trust the press? What happens when the press appears to be a part of the Democratic nominee’s campaign?
What the MSM is doing is bad for journalism and bad for the United States. Take a deep breath and a long, long look in the mirror. If you don’t see any bias, you’re not looking. All anyone wants is fairness for both sides. We sure aren’t getting it this time.
“More and more people are viewing the press the way Rush Limbaugh does”
“A rigorous, adversarial press is GOOD thing for our country and democracy.”
Remarkable
Biden is a champion of earmarks. Check his record. Remember the funds that were sent to Louisiana for the levees. Check that and see what the elected democrats did.
Charles Gibson seems like a judge and jury. He’s asking hard questions and she’s hitting them out of the park. Obama could never answer questions this fully. I see why McCain picked her.
All Sarah Palin did was keep repeating her line about giving government back to the people. What people would those be? Karl Rove? The lobbyists that are running McCain’s campaign? She struggled for an answer to Gibson’s question about what McCain/Palin plans to change to improve the economy, spewing out soundbites from her speeches and a few old saws about “finding efficiencies”. She seems to have no knowledge of how Social Security is funded or how much money it needs to remain solvent. This pretty lightweight clearly can only parrot talking points and has no real knowledge of federal affairs, except as they apply to Alaska’s requests for earmarks. She’s very slick and can come up with some platitude for every occasion, but she’s all style and no substance. Not to mention, how can any woman be in favor of forcing rape and incest victims to give birth to the child of their tormentor? She tried to slide this by as “my personal opinion,” but she gave no indication of understanding that other women should be able to make decisions based on their beliefs, not hers. And oh yeah, does anyone really believe she’s Hillary Clinton’s No. 1 fan all of a sudden? What a first-class, A-1 phoney.

Sarah Palin is the best thing to enter politics in a LONG LONG TIME!!!
She is what American Women want. Charlie Gibson was so condescending and out of line with his attitue towards the respectable Gov. of Alaska and the REPUBLICAN VP NOMINEE that I wanted to gag.
Put his treatment of Obama side by side to his treatment of Palin… the bias is clear. He is a misogynist and a sexist who couldn’t stand the idea of a woman in charge.
Gibson, as is the rest of the media and online trolls who attack her based on her GENDER, have lost all my respect and I will never again listen to or watch them for my information. Its a sad day when you can’t even stand to watch the nightly news due to unfair and biased reporting. If Gibson wants to preach from a pedestal he should take over Wrights job… otherwise, let us, the PEOPLE, make our OWN choices!
I never vote by party… I am an Independant. If Obama had showed he had the ‘right stuff’ I would have voted for him.
But all he has shown me is that he is a liar and a fraud and a hater of women. He goes against the democratic traditions and wants to lead the country he won’t even pledge allegiance to.
McCain is a patriot and hasn’t asked me to vow my soul away to him like Obama with his ‘messianic’ message. McCain and Palin want to make America great… and I would like to live in the America that McCain and Palin are talking about.
So for this Independant, its McCain Palin 08!!

But earmark to study the mating habits of Crabsand Seals? Can someone explain the benefits of these to the People of Alaska.
My grouse with Mrs Palin is that She has been lying all over the Country.
We don’t know her. She would do herself and the Ticket she represents a favor if she starts coming out clean.
Americans are not Morons. The lies may go unnoticed for a few dates, but trust Americans, they will search for the truth and the lies will start haunting her and Mccain the way it is fast become their achelles heel.
Bunch of lies. Earmarks lies, Bridge to no where lies, Plane on e-bay lies etc.

People mention Ted Stevens and that’s supposed to automatically make anything that Palin has done ok?
Lets remind folks that Palin used to support and work on behalf of Stevens until it became convenient not to.
Palin’s dangerous.

Schmit and Rove campaign ads scare everyone because they are branding the Media as “Piranhas!”, Democrats are “Wolves” and talented Artists are just lite “Celebrities” without talent and their voice doesn’t count. Schmidt and Rove have branded Palin as their Barracuda and Pit Bull.
Now Schmit and Rove are attempting to play the victim when ever the Democrat’s response or the mainstream media starts asking the questions that are on the minds of the voters.
This will be the election that will be studied by historians. How did they do it? They took out everyone with negative ads and then created their own celebrity who is running on a open playing field now. Barracuda and Pit Bull running down field carrying the football. Can a goldfish stop them. I’m checking out a video – Trained Goldfish Performs Amazing Tricks!!. Can all talking dogs stop them? I look at the video -Talking Dogs. This election may decided by a gold fish and all talking dogs taking on Schmidt and Rove’s Barracuda and Pit Bull. I have faith in the gold fish who says “No worries Team. Everything is going to be all right!” Our Goldfish runs onto the playing field to take on Schmidt and Rove’s Barracuda. A determined mutt joins our gold fish to take on Schmidt and Rove’s Pit Bull.

Dear Senator McCain
Your campaign has been
unleashing a barrage of
half-truths, falsehoods,
distortions and outright
lies about your own voting
record and now about the
spotty record of your
running mate on an
unsuspecting public.
Sir, your unbecoming behavior
leaves us with no choice other
than to confer upon you the
titles of the “Master of Mendacity”
and the “Sultan of Shadiness”.
Have a Good Day! Sir.
Respectfully,
Obama/Hillary ’08

For some reason the “list of earmarks” doesn’t load…are the Karl Rove operatives blocking the information as well as distorting and lying their way through the mouths of McCain and Palin. If our country loves the way Cheney and Bush have governed they will really love the McCain/Palin policies. We can’t afford another term of the Bush/McCain plans. Wake up America and vote for Obama/Biden 08
Jake,
So happy you addressed!! As a registered Republican and a white woman I am so tired of John McCain’s lies. All the news media, fact check, analysts, etc. have proven and verified not true – he is lying.
John McCain himself lied – he personally stated she asked for no earmarks. This is a McCain induced question because he lied again!!
John McCain will not admit he is lying! Says he is telling truth. But everyone knows he is!! Evidence proves he lies all the time. All has been proven with documented verification.
Ear Marks statement is a lie!!
Why say “LIE”????? Guess we all need to all start saying John McCain lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies!! We all say it John McCain will/may hear!! America deserves the truth and an honest politician!! I am ashamed to say I am a registered Republican. Please go check!! Stand up for our rights for truth!!
A little trivia about what a wonderful person John McCain is:
John McCain’s first wife, Carol was a beautiful swimsuit model. She stood by John and raised his children while he was a POW. During this time, Carol was in a severe car accident and was permanently disabled. When John returned from Vietnam Carol was no longer pretty enough for him so he spent a number of years cheating on her with numerous women until he met Cindy, there was speculation that John was having an affair with Cindy while still married to Carol, oh gosh, surely not, not John, in any event he applied for a marriage license 90 days before his divorce was final with Carol, should suggest something was amiss.
Cindy is 18 years younger than John and has a very nice large “piggy bank”. I am sure John could care less if it was wearing lipstick, after all, it was what that was inside that piggy bank that interested John.
If we take into consideration John’s infidelity record, he has most likely had lipstick smeared all over him during his numerous affairs, I can think of no better example than that of “Lipstick on a Pig”!!
Dear Jake,
Pork barrel…..hummm…isn’t that when you slip a big project in under the radar? If any money sent to a state is considered pork barrel then they’re all guilty.
Obama is still a bigot against whites. He should have left his church 10 years ago!!! Maybe his wife has changed since she wrote her paper in college. Oh yea, forgot…she’s now proud to be American. Obama has voted to stop every piece of gun legislation since he’s been a politician. Now he says, well I really don’t want to take your guns….Liar!!! How can you support him now? He loves guns now! Man, that’s anti-democrat!
If any of you want to look into “falsehoods” in this campaign, you should start with Senator Obama. The media has given him a pass on so many questionable episodes that NOONE knows how much he has deceived the people of this country. Not even Obama’s staff can actually name three accomplishments that qualify him to be president. But, all of them can spin the truth and try to slander Senator McCain–a good man who has served his country with honor. Senator Obama has never stayed in one position long enough for people to realize how inept he actually is. According to his own book, he failed as a community organizer. As editor of the Harvard Law Review, he did not publish even one article of his own. And his record in voting “present” may not be broken for years to come. How many times can you vote present from the Oval Office?
Dear Jake:
You’ve prominently played the McCain’s alleged computer illiteracy heavily. How about posting something about this?
From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.
Thank you. Can you do a piece on Sarah’s trips abroad now? That one is a lie too. Why do they lie when there is no reason to lie? There seems like she believes in a lot of what other American people believe in – the war, overturning Roe vs Wade, Creationsim, no separation between church and state, the NRA, no environmental protection, that Alaskan oil will savve us all – why not just run on all that? Why this endless series of lies?
Posted by: mara | September 13, 2008, 10:54 pm 10:54 pm
kgdn: baloney. the media has covered everything from obama’s church bulletins to his smoking habits.
i’d like to hear a little about sarah’s little church. from the la times: “Less than a month ago, Palin sat in the pews at the Wasilla Bible Church, to which she and her family belong, and listened to a sermon by David Brickner, who heads Jews for Jesus, a group cited by the Anti-Defamation League for its “aggressive and deceptive” proselytizing of Jews. Brickner said that Arab terrorism against the state of Israel was an expression of God’s judgment on the Jewish people for their rejection of Christ. After Brickner concluded his remarks, a special collection was taken up to support the sect’s activities.”…”
I sure heard a lot about Obama and his church. why did Sarah Palin not stand up and repudiate the speaker? Why did she not leave – not only the sermon, but the church?? Why would she subject her children to this hatred and bigotry?
Posted by: mara | September 13, 2008, 10:58 pm 10:58 pm
I’m the Vote They All Want? Well, I guess I am too – a white, female, independent voter in a swing state – and a baptised Catholic to boot. I even carpool. And I think Sarah is a liar who is just not very bright – but has gotten away with an awful lot in her life – and doesn’t know where to draw the line.

Jake,
It used to be that if you say it enough times and the media compares your comment to some random attack by the other side you could eventually convince people that hot is cold.
I’m actually starting to think that you people know the difference between a journalist and a stenographer.
Keep it up and I might start saying good things about you instead of just thinking them.

Stevereno,
There are plenty of severely handicapped people who post on these boards and make it clear that to say you can’t type is no excuse.
Palin raised 5 kids so she never had time to read, fine. McCain can get Cindy to buy him some voice recognition software or character recognition software because I have to assume that he does at least scrawl out his legislative proposals. I think it more
likely he’d rather watch baseball than pick up a software manual on his day off.
Additionally, if sportscaster is now the new standard for the Oval Office I’ll vote for Olberman. Full disclosure is my motto.

Obama Earmarks:
1) $8.5 million to prevent Asian Carp fish from entering the Great Lakes through the Chicago waterways
2) More than $6.9 million for Chicago museums
3) $5 million for the Young Men’s Christian Association to combat chronic diseases and obesity
4) $3 million for the Adler Planetarium
5) $3 million for a new Chicago park to hhonor Jean Bapstiste Point DuSable
6) $2 million for ethanol research
7) $2 million for soybean research
8) $200,000 for the construction of a
theater company “using green construction standards”
Sen. Obama requested more than $740 million for pet projects, inclusing $1 million earmark for the hospital his wife was working at and also a $750,000 eearmark to pay for the renovation of a space center named after tojp Obama donor James S Crown’s grandfather, Henry Crown.
Obama also sought more than $3.4 million earmarks for his VP Joe Biden’s llobbyist son, Hunter.
In researching I found that Palin vetoed from proposed state budget in her first year $231 million. The following year, state legistators reinserted many of those same earmarks into the budget and asked her to okay $58 billion to pay them. She vetoed them again. Boy, the nerve of that woman! Will she not ever learn that that is not what the average taxpayer wants in an elected official. I personally want someone who will grab every penny they can and spend it however foolishly they can! And an 80% approval rating from the citizens of AL????? Well, she must be doing EVERYTHING wrong and nothing right! That must mean that the 30% approval rating for Bush says he is doing everything RIGHT and very little wrong
NewsFlash:
Already the McCain campaign are sending phony absentee ballots targeting potential Obama voters in four states including Michigan and Ohio and the return address is to the wrong city clerks office.
The Carl Rove tactics of rigging this election is already starting and foreclosure Americans cannot vote, mostly those that cannot afford the financial fiasco of the Bush McCain administration.
Is this the kind of politics that the holier than thou Sarah Palin is accepting as honest politics? Get real folks – she is just as deceitful and a liar as John McCain and George Bush.
I guess the Supreme court will be deciding this contested election also.
The earmark issue is a huge one in this election simply because McCain/Palin have raised it. McCain stated that he would “veto any bill with earmarks”, but it appears that Ms. Palin is the earmark abuse queen. Wait til this comes out in the debates….it’ll be fun. OBAMA/BIDEN 08

“McCain has similarly gone one step too far, attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100% truth test.”
– Karl Rove, on Fox News Sunday, talking about Sen. John McCain’s advertising.
Posted by: Leonard Peltier | September 15, 2008, 1:08 am 1:08 am
It is pretty apparent that Jake and most of the commenters don’t recognize the difference between funding requests (which are voted as part of funding legislation) and earmarks which are dropped into legislation, without transparency or a vote. All states submit funding requests through their elected representatives. Palin has significantly reduced those requests in her 1st 2 years in office. Those requests are debated in committee and on the House floor where Congress can allocate and prioritize with full visibility. The earmarks undergo no such scrutiny and point of fact: Governors can’t request earmarks, only senators and representatives can!
OK, so what Palin asked for shouldn’t be called “earmarks” – but they are still funding requests, and the OP’s original request was:
“Will you please stop telling the American people that she never asked for or received any pork barrel projects?”
So McCain/Palin are still misrepresenting her record, regardless of whether or not the writer here knows how best to label her requests.
Posted by: Neil B | September 15, 2008, 5:33 pm 5:33 pm
But you’re trying get around the crux of the McCain/Palin critiques on earmark and pork. The critique of earmarks is that they make an end-run around the approval process, and their advocates don’t put them up for a traditional Congressional approval; they’re merely tacked on to apprproriations bills.
The critique on pork focuses on wasteful federal spending, and particularly that which has no obvious federal benefit or tie-in. If Palin is using money for the fishing industry, or for roads and infrastructure (generally needed, but obviously there can be excessive spending even in infrastructure, e.g., Bridge to Nowhere), that’s not a problem.
AAAAAAA – men.
He’s so Mavericky he even has to Maverick the truth!
“Take that facts! You’ve been Maverickized!”
Posted by: BBpd | September 12, 2008, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm
he can’t, because he would then have to admit that he lied, and if there is nothing else he has learned from ‘W’ it is that if you tell the American people a lie long enough, a significant number of them will believe it to be truth even in the face of irrefutable fact.

Shameful.

2) Obama is still asking for $3,000,000 for a Chicago musuem that his friend is chairman of
3) Rezko, Rezko, Rezko
4) Picked a plagerist as a running mate
5) Wants change so picked the most partisan Senator of the last 25 years

In 2007 Obama requested earmarks for the 2008 fiscal year.
In 2008 Obama has not requested any earmarks for the fiscal year of 2009.
None of that changes the fact that John mcCain just told a bald faced lie on the View.

See people would understand that.Earmarks…well now we all know every state gets them and their reps spend alot of time looking after their states…own up to it , don’t lie just call it what it is a Gov trying to get the most for her state. People can understand that. See Sarah..it makes you look bad and very unbecoming. All this lieing Sarah…bad

Very truly yours,
Stephen

If you don’t do this then there is a good chance the US Nuclear — sorry, nucular — codes will be in the control of Palin.
Posted by: Anonny | September 12, 2008, 4:55 pm 4:55 pm
Jake,
Thank you for the facts and your letter to Senator McCain.

Posted by: Ruth | September 12, 2008, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm

I’ll take your lame propaganda and raise you 10 minutes of Video of McCain and Pailin saying directly contradictory things at different times.

Let’s see you have the raise amount wrong but at least you got the size of the earmark right.
Michelle Obama received a raise in 2005.
Sen Obama requested an earmark for $1M for a new pavillion for the hospital Michelle worked at in 2006.
The earmark did not go thru.
And pooof there goes another bullshit right wing lie!

Interesting that your notes on McCain’s record of standing up to the man ends around 2002. As everyone knows, thats when the big flip began to flop. Over the last six years he’s embraced every policy that Bush has used to ruin the country. Welcome to the new McCain!

Posted by: amy | September 12, 2008, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

Beckie,
Once again you stand corrected.

Posted by: Brooklyn Democrat | September 12, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

Since when is it misogynist to ask a politician questions about his/her record and positions?!?!?!?!

Jake,
So happy you addressed!!

Why this endless series of lies?

kgdn: baloney. the media has covered everything from obama’s church bulletins to his smoking habits.
i’d like to hear a little about sarah’s little church. from the la times: “Less than a month ago, Palin sat in the pews at the Wasilla Bible Church, to which she and her family belong, and listened to a sermon by David Brickner, who heads Jews for Jesus, a group cited by the Anti-Defamation League for its “aggressive and deceptive” proselytizing of Jews.

McCain has been seen using a blackberry. If he could write and use a blackberry, why couldn’t he use a computer and explore the internet or type an e-mail?

“McCain has similarly gone one step too far, attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100% truth test.”
– Karl Rove, on Fox News Sunday, talking about Sen. John McCain’s advertising.

Posted by: bigredcon | September 15, 2008, 3:17 pm 3:17 pm
